Tell us your story: I was sitting in my Biology class of 15 people, when my Chemistry teacher came in and said that he had just heard some scary news in the school office. He told us that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center and that it could have been an accident. Our Bio teacher decided that she would tune in the radio, so we could hear what was going on. She tuned in, and then all of a sudden we heard that another plane had just crashed into the other tower. All of our mouths dropped. I didnt know what to think considering my uncle and cousin worked in the towers. I was to scared to cry, so I just sat there in amazement. Our class was the first class in the whole school to find out since our Chem teacher came to tell us. It was time to switch classes, so I headed on to my next class. I saw my best friend as soon as I walked in the room, and then that was it. I just started crying. My best friend Megan was hugging me, and everyone was asking her what was wrong. Megan told everyone that my uncle and cousin worked in the building. To make a long story short, my uncle and cousin got out. They began to run and my cousin broke down. He stopped and wanted to go back in but my uncle grabbed him and told him that they had to leave. One of my other cousins was standing on the corner waiting for the bank to open, and he saw the first and second planes hit. He happens to be a nurse, so he called his supervisor and asked what he should do. The supervisor told him to get to the nearest hospital, and to show them his nursing card and to help out. My cousin helped save lives, and I am very proud of everyone else who helped to save lives. I knew that I couldnt do anything to help, so I decided that I would go and donate blood 3 days after. After we donated at the Veteran's hospital, a vetran said "Congratulations young lady, you have just saved 3 people and your blood is heading straight to New York at 4p". A lot of people my age have never valued freedom because we have always had it. I listen to my grandparents talk to me about what happened in Pearl Harbor never imagining anything like this could happen in my lifetime. I have 2 little girls age 11 and 2 who mean the very essence of life to me. After Septemeber 11th many songs were created and remixed with news footage, and memorials for the victims and this country. I took those songs, the speeches President Bush made, and a special religious tribute and made a CD for my children. So that they may know in their future the value of freedom, what it means to all of us, and the war we fought to keep it. I know my girls will listen to this one day and understand the pain this country endured that fateful day in our history. More lives were lost that day in this country than any war we have ever endured in this country. I woke up and saw the towers on fire - but I thought it was a movie. I proceeded into the shower and then I realized that my TV was on NBC - so that could not be a movie. I instantly jumped out of the shower thinking of my brother and a few friends that work in the WTC. I tried unsuccessfully to call back east - all of the lines were tied up. I figured it would be best to get ready for work and try to contact loved ones from there. On the way to work I heard about the collapse of the towers, the crash at the Pentagon and the crash in PA. I started to sob uncontrolably - partly for fear partly for anger. What the hell was going on?! I finally was able to get in touch with my loved ones within an hour of being at work. My building in downtown L.A. was then evacuated and we were all sent home. I can only imagine what those people who lost loved ones were going through watching the continous coverage of 9/11 on television. My thoughts are prayers are still with each and every person who lost a loved one on that horrible day. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had just sent the kids off to school and turned on the t.v. when I saw the North Tower on fire. I thought I was watching something from another time and then realized it said Live in the upper screen. I watched in disbelive and as I watched it just got worse. I called my husband (who is a mason and out on job sites with no t.v. of radio) on his cell phone and he kind of brushed it off. He did not realize the seriousness of what I was saying to him until he came home for lunch. Then I called my mother. It took 1.5 hours to get through to her in Greenbelt. We watched in horor as the South Tower feel to the ground and cried together in complete shock praying for all of those who were inside. As we discussed, Oh my God, what if the North Tower falls, the unthinkable happened again. I have never seen such an erie site in all my life. We later learned that my brother was just blocks from the Pentagon when it was struck. They were told to immediately leave the job site they were on and to get as far away as possible. They left equipment and all behind. I pray for all of those who lost someone on that day and feel ashamed to feel so thankful that my brother was spared when so many were not. We were told to pick up our children from school and after I picked them up I headed straight to the Blood Bank in Easton, MD where I waited for nine hours to give blood. The atmosphere was one I had never experienced before and don't wish to ever again. It was somber, yet there was one part of it I hope remains...the unity that filled the room and parking lot. I watched for days after the recovery started as jets and planes flew over our house. The planes which carried the bodies and remains of the victims to Dover Airport and I waved my flag proudly as they went over. I just kept thinking, if they were to look down and just catch a glimpse of me standing there waving the flag at them then they would know we were there with them and it was my way of saying, "Thank You." September 11 is a day that no one will ever forget and it is up to us to make sure of that. As we say in our songs, so it shall be...We are and will stay, The Land of The Free. God Bless America! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It is 1986 and I have just joined the volunteer fire dept. in my town. My husband and I have finally done something together. I get pregnant with my son and had to quit. Two years later I had a daughter. Not being able to leave my children alone when called, I decided to wait on re-joining. I did in March 2001. Sept. 11, 2001 I am a teacher assistant in a school for exceptional children. We heard the news and tried to watch the happenings. All day long I wondered what I could have done. Sometimes all we can do is exactly what we are doing...when we are doing it. It was my time to teach the children.......not be saving lives. My heart wrenched each time I saw a new picture of the people evolving from the gray smoke and falling ashes. The only thing I could recognize about each person was their color. GRAY...Dirty...scared....dazed...astonished and completely devistated by the tragedies that had just occurred. Being a volunteer firefighter, I thought of my fellow firefighters families. "I hope their families know", I thought. "What would I do if it were me?" They made the ultimate sacrifice. They actually laid down their lives for those whome they did not know, not because someone made them, but because they wanted to. It was what they HAD to do. I am certain they would not have done anything different. In the fire department only 18 months now, I still can't help but think what kind of devistation all the families are still dealing with. Being a Christian, I hope they all knew Jesus as their Savior and heard Him calling to them in the darkness and ashes of a life passed. I hope they felt the comfort of His loving arms embrasing them as they breathed their last breath. I hope they heard His soft whisper "come home....your work is done". To each family member of each person who lost their life on that dreadful day, I pray a prayer of peace and comfort and strength for a new day. It is hard not to have been touched in some way by this horrific event. On the bright side, the world was changed. The brightest ray of hope was colored red, white and blue. "Old Glory" was displayed many ways....none disrespectful....on that day and more days. My respect for emergency personnel has grown and my love for the job has exceeded all I could ever imagine. I will always tell my family - before each trip out my door - whether to work or on a call - that I love them. For I may never know the fate that is held for me as I take the necessary steps to do what I have practiced over and over again. Only God knows our future. I will always remember! I will always hope! In December 2000, we drove up to New York mainly for my 3 year old grandson to see the Christimas Tree. (He always referred to the city as "Ms. New York" when he'd see a shot of it on the morning news show--I guess he associated the city and the Statue of Liberty as one in the same). We arrived later than anticipated, so we didn't get to go down to see the World Trade Center. I said, "that's ok, it'll be here next December for us to see." How wrong I was! I had went to visit the Computer Assistive Technology Program (CAP) office at the Pentagon in June 2001 (my first time ever inside of the building). The people there were so nice, and I was so relieved when I received an e-mail from that office on 9/12 letting us know the staff was unharmed. The WTC's been hit by 2 planes!" She flicked on the TV. We saw the first tower already aflame, then the ghastly, unimaginable, sight of the 2nd plane ploughing through the other tower. My first thought was, "Dear God, what's gone wrong with the traffic control system!", but Deb immediately said, "Well if this ain't some goddamned terrorist shit, I don't know what is." I was stunned again. I then realized that both my mom and sister were in the city that day (My whole family lives in the NY metropolitan area), and I didn't know if my brother was there too. I dialed and dialed. Finally, I reached my dad in NJ. "Just spoke to your mother and she's fine. She's heading uptown to meet up with your sister at a friend's house." Then my sister got through to me. "Jen, NY is shut down. I can't get out, and I know that Denis (her husband) is stuck somewhere on the road in CT. Here are the numbers of all our neighbors. Please call until you find someone to pick up the kids from school." I dialed for 3 hours and finally got through to a fella who'd gotten the last PATH train out of the city. When I said I was Cindy's sister he almost lost it. "My God, is she okay?" I said, "She's fine, but could you get the kids from school?" He was glad to, but then told me how he worked down the block from WTC. "When the 1st plane hit, my boss told everyone to stay calm and go back to work, but when that 2nd plane hit, he yelled, "Everybody! Get the F**K OUTTA HERE! So I ran. I saw people jumping to get away from the building. I can't believe what I've just seen!" I felt very lucky as my husband, my daughter and I had just flown out of Newark to come back to Chicago 36 hours before the attacks. I was pointing out the towers to Lily, my 2 1/2 year old, and telling her how, "That's how you can tell it's NY. There's the Empire State Bldg midtown, and the Twin Towers all the way down to the right." Then I realized that my cousin, Patriece, and her 2 girls were due to come back around today. I called her. "We're home and fine, but we don't know about David Jefferds." David was our cousin who we'd just seen 3 days before at my parents' 50th wedding anniversary, and I hadn't even thought about him. He worked in Tower One!!! Several hours later, David emailed another cousin to let us all know that he got out safe. I felt so helpless. I felt so guilty for not being there, with my family. It took days to track down all our friends. All in all, from my home county in New Jersey, we lost 150 souls that day. Everything had changed. It's up to us all, as to how we handle that change, and I fervently pray that it's a change to more tolerance, more communication, and not a change towards isolationism. I'm not sure if I want it to. Every time I remember this tragic event I get angry all over again. They have taken away from my child the security of this country. He will never know freedom and confidence I knew. I was in school on this day. I work at an elementary school and I was told of the tragedy as it was taking place and all I wanted to do was hold my son and apologize, apologize for the bad people alive who has made him confused about where we live and the beliefs we have. How do I explain to a 4 year old why Mommy is crying while watching TV? Why Mommy is crying when I hold him and pray for his security and why Mommy is crying when I tuck him into bed? I watched on TV on night how we have to listen to the young people of today because they are going to be the ones fighting our battles tomorrow. Tell us your story: My two year old twin daughters and I were laughing and singing along to their favorite Blue's clues tape, when I heard a frantic pounding on our door. My mother-in-law had come from next door to tell me that a plane had just hit the world trade center. I turned on the t.v. just moments before the second tower was hit. My heart broke as I realized along with the rest of America that this was a terroist attack. My thoughts immediately went to my husband who was doing construction at Fort Riley, about an hour's drive from here. I called and he said that he would be home as soon as they could, becuase they were locking down the base. I held my children close and prayed for everyone in New York, and then Washington, and finally Penn. We might be far away from the action itself, but when those towers fell, we heard and felt it here in Kansas. As my children grow, I can teach them about the brave men and women who gave their lives so that others might live. I can show them what the real consequences of hate. I can let them learn of the importance of freedom and our country by honoring the memory of those who died on September 11, 2002. Tell us your story: I really don't think it matters who you are or where you live, this incident has to have touched your life in one way or another...... One year ago today I was sitting at my desk working on my computer with the radio playing smooth jazz in the background. One of my co-workers came by my office to let me know that a plane had hit one of the World Trade Center towers. It sounded like nothing more than a freak accident, until a reporter announced that another had crashed into the second tower. Like most in this country, I was dumbfounded. Thank goodness the FAA grounded all flights. My mother was driving in route to the Orlando International Airport, so I called her on her cell phone to let her know she wouldn't be able to fly to my grandmother's home in Missouri. I was so thankful that she wasn't in the air at the time these tragedies happened. Then we heard that the Pentagon had also been damaged by a plan crash(my father had worked there several years ago....thank goodness he wasn't still there on this day), and then the crash in Pennsylvania. They were sure at this point that this was the work of terrorists. Well, my husband works on Disney World property and all I could think about was his safety. I was also supposed to take a flight to meet my mother in Missouri to visit with my grandmother on September 13. We both ended up requesting refunds from TWA, and they were granted. My mother and father ended up driving to my grandmother's a month later because there was still fear of terrorist attacks. To this day, September 11, 2002, I still have not made it to my grandmother's home and miss her terribly. I just hope that one day soon, I will be able to make that trip, before something happens to her. I also remember cleaning my home on the evening of September 13 while having the news on (there was nothing else on television that entire week), and just having to sit down in the middle of my living room floor while watching the horrifying pictures and listening to the personal stories of those who lost loved ones or who were in search of loved ones. I balled my eyes out hysterically. I still do.....anytime the date or the emergency number is mentioned.....God Bless America! Generally we work at home and keep the news on all the time and we saw the second plane crash into the tower live. Q2.Has your life changed because of September 11th, 2001? If so, tell us how. At first, I was very concerned. I thought I needed to do something to fight back. And I thought I might have to give my life in some battle or fight in order to preserve our way of life for future generations. I had never had to serve in the military and risk my life for my country, but I thought maybe my time had come, although late in life. In reality, a year later, life has not changed much at all. Q3.What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? Evil should always be fought, and your guard should never be let down. Q4.Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? No, I didn't fly a flag. Although, I was stirred to see how many did. I prefer to keep my emotions inside but I did feel extremely patriotic. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was nearing 9:00am and My Sergeant and I were getting ready to put our inmate hose cleaning crew to work.. We did not have any TV's on because the inmates are not able to watch them during the day. One of the inmates approaced our Officer Station Window and told us that an Airplane had hit the Twin Towers in New York.. They have Headset Radios. Not sure whether or not they were telling us the truth, we turned on the TV and were shocke to see the devastation that was occurring. My Sergeant, a wonderful woman, hugged me and we cried for the thousands of lives we knew that has to be lost.. We realized through our observance that this was not a accidet but a horrific act of terrorism!!!! Many of the inmates (males) wanted to get out and join the armed forces, even though they knew they couldn't being convicted felons. I have since learned that throughout most of the State most did not watch TV fo0r obvious Security reasons. I am not sure what all I can and should say. But, I will never forget the moment because I was not home with those I loved, rather in the dregs of society, a prison for violent felons. I was very angry that I was there and could not go home. I have a cousin who works on Wall Street and I was very concerned. He is fine! Thank God!!!! I cried for days for my fellow brothers and sisters in our Law Enforcement Family as well as all of the people who lost their lives, there families, for the lives that were changed forever by a horrible act of HATE!!!!!! I AM ANGRY THAT THIS COULD HAPPEN. I WILL NEVER FORGET THE SEREAL IMAGES I OBSERVED ON THE TELEVISION THAT DAY. IT WAS SO IRONIC THAT I WAS LOCKED UP BEHIND THE COLD STEEL BARS AND RAJOR WIRE FENCING OF THE PRISON WITH SO MANY WHO HAD DENOUNCED THE VERY MORAL VALUES OF OUR GREAT AND WONDERFUL COUNTRY. I couldn't wait to go home and hold close to me my family. The ones I could not embrace physically, I called and talked for hours on the phone. We were all getting changed in the girls locker room when our principal came onto the loud speaker and told us that a plane had hit one of the World Trade Center Towers. We all just kinda looked at each other like "What was going on"? We all sat in gym class absoultly silent. We didn't know what to do, and some of us even thought it was a load of bullshit. Not even the end of gym we hear that another plane had hit the other Trade Center Building. By then I was getting pretty nervous. What were they going to do next? Was this really WWW 3? We all basically wandered to our 4th period classes. I told my boyfriend Rick, that I was scared, b/c they started telling people in my city that they need to start evacuating high rise buildings, and my mom works in one. I told him after 4th period that I wanted to go home. We all watched in horror as the first tower collapsed into dust, and then finding out that less then an hour from me a plane hit in Somerset County,PA. After 4th period I went home and called my mom in tears. I told her that I wanted her to come home. She told me she would be alright and would be home later. So Rick and I sat for the rest of the day, watching almost every news channel about this tragic horrific act of hatred. It was such a sad day for America. Yet, one thing I didn't know at the time, was that I had a little innocent American baby in my stomach. She was one of the many "September 11th babies" I thank God everyday for my beautiful little Hollie... I had to wake up real early for football practice and practice from early in the morning until about 30 min. right before school started. As I walked down the halls nobody had a clue what had happened and what was still to come. As I walked into my first period class, I saw my teacher was watching CNN for some reason. I paid little attention to the TV thinking either a school getting shoot up again or an accident with a plane crashing. But, little did I know it was no way an accident. My next to periods were crazy everybody saying what they thought had happened. That same day my mom picked me up early to go to the eye doctor. Not until then did I real have just about the truth about what had happened. After I got my eyes checked I watched the 9" TV in the back of the doctors office, that was when everything came clear and when I found out the time line of the events that just occurred. After that I went to grab something to eat and strait home to watch the news and nothing else. I was amazed, shocked, sad, and very angry. I feet like just saying...NO WAY... An almost disbelieving newscaster said that the 2nd jet airplane had hit the other World Trade Center Tower. I was in shock and hoped that maybe the employees had not been in the building yet, forgetting the time zone difference. It was a complete shock to learn the loss of life in that tragedy. A woman at work, who once lived in Long Island, told me her father once worked across from the World Trade Center. She had also hoped that no one was at work on that tragic day. I remember the feelings I had as I watched the attacks unfold on the news. The anger at what was happening. The unanswered questions of why this was happening. I still feel the hurt deep down in my heart for those passengers and crewmen that died that day. Even though no one I knew died in the attacks, I as every firefighter in the U.S. lost 343 brothers. Tell us your story: My story is pretty unremarkable-I had turned on the tv to check the news before going to work to see what was the condition of Ed McAffrey-he's a Bronco receiver who had broken his leg in the Monday Night Football Game the night before. I remember glancing at the picture and thinking, "There's a movie I want to miss" just after the first plane had hit. It sank in pretty fast that this wasn't a movie trailer and I, like so many others, had that gut wrenching realization come over me that the US was being attacked by terrorists as soon as the second plane hit. I stayed and watched the news coverage until the towers came down and then went to work. Work is as the secretary for a church in Fort Collins. We have a large tv screen in the sanctuary and we could get ABC news on it and we left it on all day-interrupting it every half hour for people to express their thoughts or prayers. We had a steady stream of folks-most of whom I had never seen before-come in to our sanctuary that day. Some just sat. Some prayerd, others talked among themselves quietly, a few wept openly. I dunno if they were all Christians or what and it didn't make any difference-they would have been welcomed in our facility even in a time when nothing was happening. I do know that they needed what they perceived to be a safe haven at that time. I remember feeling as though all of these people were a part of the human fabric of life and that we were all on an equal footing-from the lady who got out of her Jaguar to the student who showed up in a beat up old Toyota. It took several days for any of us on the church staff to get it together to function somewhat normally again..think we were all pretty numb-just like everyone else.
