The following essay is not meant to be the ultimate view of that horrific day. It is simply my personal thoughts. The opinions expressed are mine alone. My personal take on the tragedy that devastated virtually all of the US and most of the world. I was in a cheeful mood on my way to visit my sister in complete ignorance on what happened in NYC and Washington DC. Then I over heard at 8th and Market in downtown Phila, PA on my way to Cherry Hill, NJ, some women talking very excitedly, profoundly upset the World Trade Center was bombed, completely destroyed. They also said the Pentagon was bombed too. At first there was complete disbelief. Oh they must have heard some absurd rumors. Someone's pulling an extremely poor taste joke. Than as I heard more and more people saying pretty much the same thing came to a complete realization that it was true. As I went to the high speed line literally thousands, if not tens of thousands of travelers were there. It was wall to wall people. Normally the trains run every ten minutes during the day. Sepember 11th they were running every five minutes. Even than it was for many persons, including yours truly, standing room only. It seemed as if everybody was made a desperate mad dash to escape the "City of Brotherly Love" Mayor John Street had declared a city emergency. When I arrived at my sibling the TV was on and than I saw the devastation that was on all the news channels. I say that because my relative and I with her remote switched back and forth from the local, PBS and cable channels for as much news as possible. We soon found out, as did the rest of the world of course that four planes were hijacked and made to hit the New York high rise towers and the seat of the Defense Department of the US. Govt. Also an airplane just outside of Pittsburgh. Unfortunately I didn't hear that much detail about that incident. It seemed that the targets were the heart of the political and economic life of the great USA. The rest of this article are my thoughts, feelings. How can I begin to express myself. How can I find the words to describe my opinion on the worst act of terrorism on US soil? I feel that practically anything I write will be inadequate. For how does one explain a terrorist act in which there is as far as I know, no precedent. Well here goes. First whoever is responsible for this horrific act are mass murderers who did not give a damn about their victims. I feel deep sorrow for all the individuals murdered. I especially am feeling deepest sympathy for the airplane passengers. At least some of the workers in the World Trade Center had some chance of surviving. Those on the plane had none. Can you imagine the terror, horror they must have experienced in their last moments. The men, women, children. Oh the sheer horror of it. It's terrifically difficult to imagine the total terror that the victims felt. What really got me was how innocent they were and how much they did not deserve this. Of course no one deserved this. It was a cruel if not the cruelest thing to do to someone. As I saw the photographs of the men, women jumping from the upper floors of the Towers in New York, they reminded me of the young women who jumped to escape the flames in the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire. I felt so sorry for the people who felt they had no choice. I hope whoever is responsible for these horrible acts will get what they deserve. Also hoping that no innocent people will be punished. That Arab Americans will not be unfairly treated. One of my husband and my friends is a Palestinian arab. I know her and her family are upset too. I also fear that since the US has strong ties with Israel that anti-semites will blame the Jews for what happened. Being Jewish myself this is a real concern for me. I know there are sites that do just that. Don't want to name them because I don't want to give them any more publicity. Please trust me. I've seen them. Also being a mental health consumer, being successfully treated for a mood disorder this is a reminder that the vast majority of people with mental illness who are under the right treatment are law abiding. Also concerned that the one year commemoration of 9/11 may open up old emotional wounds. Men and women and for that matter, boys and girls prone to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder may be having an especially rough time right now. This past January, a woman friend with PTSD committed suicide over 9/11. Even now she is dearly missed. Speaking of mental health consumer/psychiatric survivor a few years ago I visited "Fountain House" clubhouse. It is basically a voc-rehab for consumers/survivors. I am member of "Welcome House" clubhouse. Please see my "Clubhouse" article. There is a connection here. Many members of Fountain House also worked in the World Trade Center. Hoping they are ok and if not I send my deepest sympathies to their significant others. I also send my deepest sympathies to all the significant others who lost their loved ones on this tragic day. One last thought, to coin a phrase inspired by Joni Mitchell "Don't they always know when they're gone, They beefed up airport security and made it much more inconvient but much safer." In other words it had to take an event like this to realize airport security had to be much improved. I hope that employees involved will be from now on well trained and fairly compensated as well. After all they have our lives in their hands. It reminds me on a grand scale about how a stop light seems to be always put up after a tragedy occurs. For once I'd wish people would have some foresight instead of always having hindsight. Lastly I hope the American people will not let the "American Patriot Act" take away our freedoms. I think it was Benjamin Franklin who said those who give up freedom for peace deserve it when they lose both." Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was watching the "Today Show" while feeding breakfast to my then 9 month old baby, Nathaniel. Katie Couric broke into the conversation to announce that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. And I thought, how sad, a pilot must have had a heart attack, or something along that line, and crashed into the building. Speculation was that it was a small, non-commercial plane. Then, while watching the fire coming out of the building, I saw the second plane hit, and immediately thought, terrorism. I called my parents and my sister, who was also on maternity leave, to tell them to turn on the television. Then, the Pentagon, and finally the crash approximately 90 miles from Homer City, in Shanksville. I used the camcorder and recorded the coverage on the television. Someday, when Nathaniel is old enough to understand, I hope this video tape will give him a personal connection to the tragedy, to help him realize the magnitude of what happened that day. Tell us your story: I remember sitting at my desk hearing one of the gentlemen I work with come out of his office stating that he heard on the radio that a plane flew into the World Trade Center. We all thought - what a horrible thing - wonder what happened to the pilot to have him run into it. What an "accident." Of course later we found out it was no accident. After that, my only thoughts were to get home to my family and kids, and to pray about the horrible thing that had happened. After I was home and safe with my family I found out about the Pentagon and the plane in Pennsylvania. A total loss of life - something we'll never completely understand. As I got home I was worried sick about my friends mom. She had left a few days earlier to attend to her job, a flight attendant. I watched the names every night praying for the best. My friends line was always busy so I decided to go to his house. To my relief his mom was home and perfectly safe. Once I was sure of her condition I was surprised how good it felt to care for others. It was a new feeling I had never experienced before. It has made me a more well rounded person. The tragic events that day have shown me that when I make a mistake it is not the end of the world. It has made me more strong as an individual. Instead of caring what others think I have learned to go my own way and be myself. The last way I think I have changed is I am not so afraid to try new things. Before I was scared of failing in a new sport or activity. But it has made me stronger than ever. I think that September 11th has done more good than harm to our nation. It has made us come together as one. We will always mourn to all the innocent victims on that day, but as a country we will stand tall and accept the challenge the terrorists have placed on us and keep our stride as the greatest nation ever! I was shocked as we were told.."The World Trade Centers have been bombed." 'Bombed? It'll be ok.' But was my teachers turned the TV on, we saw the smoke rising, then soon the collapse. Immediatly tears because to stream down my face as I didn't know what was happening. People were making fun of me, but was it so wrong to have emotion for those I didn't know? The most part that scared me was, what if it happened the day I was in there in June? But later that day my tears continued to stream, but I felt proud of America. Not knowing who'd done it at that time, I knew that whoever it was had been threatened by America, and that somehow made me feel proud that I lived in a democratic country, where I was bound by the government, telling me what I could and couldn't do. The footage of the attacks were already being shown. At first I wasn't sure just what was going on. At the bottom of the screen were the initials WTC attacked. I yelled in to ask my husband what WTC stood for and he yelled back World Trade Center. Then all of a suddon it hit me what was going on just as the plane flew into the second tower. My husband joined me in front of the tv where we spent most of Tuesday September 11, 2001 holding each other and our son. We tried to turn off the tv but were afraid that their would be more attacks on the United States. I will never forget the empty feeling that I had in the pit of my stomach on that day. I will never forget the loss of emotion that I felt on that day. I will never forget the feeling thatI had than night when I went to bed. I wondered just what was going to happen tomorrow. One year later as we are reliving that day again I can only think of the children who lost parents and who were born after the attacks - never knowing the parents who are being called heroes. I am just an ordinary housewife, I don't teach young children in a school nor am I a police officer, or a firefighter. I am not a construction worker nor did I know anyone affected in the WTC attacks. But that day changed my whole outlook on life and I will never be the same again. The doors opened at 8:00 a.m. and I wanted to be there to take advantage of the early morning sale. I finished shopping around 8:45 a.m. and got in my car to drive home. I usually have talk radio on in the morning, and the first thing I heard was a report that a plane had hit one of the World Trade Center towers. My immediate thought was that it was deliberate, but that it was some nut case with a grudge in a light plane. It was only a few minutes to my home, so I turned on the TV in the kitchen as soon as I walked in the door. There was a scene of unimaginable devastation on the screen, and I knew that it had to be something other than a small plane. I stood in the kitchen in front of my 13" TV when I had a large screen TV available only only a few feet away in the family room, but I was transfixed; unable to tear my eyes from the screen. As I stood there watching, there came the unbelievable sight of another plane crashing into the other tower, and I knew our world had changed forever. I called my son in Columbus to ask if he was watching, and we stayed on the phone together until the first tower fell. I then called my husband at his office and found that he and his staff had turned on the TV in the waiting room and were gathered around with his patients watching, and was on the phone with him when the second tower fell. No one knew why this had happened, only that it had to be deliberate. I then called my sister in Middletown, Ohio and she told me that she had just heard that these were commercial aircraft that had been hijacked, apparently for the express purpose of turning them into weapons - aircraft full of Americans being used to kill still more Americans. I was dumbfounded -who could hate us that much? And then came reports of the attack on the Pentagon, and then more reports of a plane crash in Pennsylvania, and I remember thinking - how could this happen? How could it be so easy to hijack so many planes? How many more are there in the air right now and where are they headed? I stood there in front of that little TV switching between stations, trying to understand what was happening to our country, and finally looked at a clock. Tell us your story: I am a fifth grade teacher and prepared my day on September 11 just like any other; lesson plans, paper work, etc. At 8:50, I was starting my social studies lesson when my sixth grade colleague ran into my room saying that a plane crashed into the Twin Towers. Somewhat incredulous, I had my aide take over while I learned the truth. There, before now watering eyes, I saw the smoke and flames shoot into the sky. Little did I know the day was over. Teachers were in shock and several had family that worked there. An announcement came over our intercom that all televisions must be shut off. I did not understand, but I soon realized that some of our students had parents who worked there. I explained to my class what had happened (from what I knew) and who had done this. At the conclusion of my explanation, to the exact second, the roar of a jet plane echoed throughout our school. I have never seen fear like I saw in the faces of my students and I hope I never see fear like that again. We learned later that the jet was flying in to protect New York. As teachers, we were told to "keep it together" and for the most part, God love them all, they did. However, in the halls many of us, myself included, could be seen wiping our eyes and supporting each other. It wasn't until later in the afternoon that I saw those magnificent towers falling to earth. I have changed. I am not the same as I was a year ago. I do, however, believe that I am living in the greatest country in the world with the greatest citizens in the world. God bless America and all of our heroes! The editor decided not to use it - I believe she had asked several people, and used the first one she got back. However, the story has traveled quite a bit, particularly among artists, both here and abroad. ----------------------------------------------------------- We had a studio in the World Trade Center. On the 92nd floor of Tower 1. Until yesterday. Our art/architecture collaborative Ocean Earth, had been granted this space by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council through their World Views program. It was an exhilirating place to work, to watch a thunderstorm, to look out on the waters we sought to utilize as sources of alternative energy. To replace our reliance on BIG OIL. To alter the ecological, economic, political and social consequences of our reliance on BIG OIL. I had watched the World Trade Center being built. As a young architecture student, I visited the big hole in the ground which was to become the WTC. A huge hole crisscrossed by the tubes of PATH trains They hung in the air like artifacts of a Flash Gordon movie. Later my mother worked in the building, and I'd meet her for lunch. We'd look out the windows, watching airplanes pass below us. Later it became a place of transit for me as a commuter from my home in New Jersey, the first hints of New York City I'd see from the train, the place I'd arrive, and the last place in New York on my journey home. I'd watch the changes in the mall on the ground floor, waxing nostalgic for the bank, the Japanese sushi vendor, the other transient elements of what seemed like a permanent place. Tuesday morning I left my daughter's apartment on the Lower East Side at 8 AM, whispering goodbye to her as she slept. Later she arose, and looking out her window, saw the first plane strike Tower 1. She called my wife: "Mom, a plane just hit the World Trade Center!" "Don't watch it - it's going to be horrible!" my wife replied. Our studio in the WTC required us to obtain special photo ID cards. For security. I remarked to my colleague: "This is stupid. It just feeds an atmosphere of hysteria. It makes as much sense as airport security. It won't stop anyone who is determined to plant a bomb, it actually encourages them to try." Why did the buildings collapse so rapidly? What can we learn from this? What lessons does it have for current architectural practice? Steel is very sensitive to heat. In most skyscrapers, the steel skeleton in encased in concrete, to protect it in case of fire. The World Trade Center, with its' steel structure on the outside of the building, would have been immune to fire of ordinary proportions. In the event of an inferno, however, the steel will weaken, twist, and collapse under the weight above it. This is apparently what happened. This collapse then progresses like a house of cards. It is a consequence of the arrogance of scale - as we stretch ourselves heavenward, we have created a condition in which we are literally placed on a slender support, vulnerable to small pertubations. This morning, the day after, I asked myself what I can do. Dressing, I pulled out my tee shirt with Dr. Martin Luther King's picture on it. I need to assert the spirit of Dr. King. I need to shout it to the world, to place it on my chest. I wish our President would speak of the need for reconciliation, not retribution. We don't need more innocent victims. Today, Ocean Earth, in the shows "Policy Models" at the Rockford Art Museum in Illinois and "Sea Change" in Spacex Gallery in Exeter, England offers a vision of a world not dependant on petroleum and free of the conflicts and hostilities attending our reliance upon it. Had our proposals for the Persian Gulf and other locales producing the raw materials for energy been adopted, the hostility evident in this act would have been defused, replacing the need for conflict with the need for cooperation. I think we could see a little bit of smoke, but nothing big, just some of the air was kind of grayish. Before lunchtime about half of our twenty-student class was gone, their parents had come in and brought them home. I stayed at school. We didn't really do anything that day, just watched the tv. After-care was cancled for the day, so my dad picked me up around three o'clock. By the time I got home I was sick of the news and wanted to watch my favorite show, the Simpsons. Instead the news was on. I was annoyed and sat around for awhile. My mom was on a business trip so I did my best to down my dad's cooking. About five minutes after we finished, my great aunt and uncle who lived in West Virginia called and aksed if we were alright. I said yes and put my dad on the phone. I listened for awhile I think, and then I probably watched tv some more and went up to bed. At some point my mom called, she knew we were fine, she was just checking in. That's really all I remember. I found him home and crying, his wifes sister worked in that building. I immediately drove into the city to be with him, as she was a very positive influence in my life several years ago. When I arrived in NYC, I realised I still had on my uniform from work, I am a nurse, it served me well, as I was allowed to join the many who had volunteered. I worked in a near by hospital for nearly two days straight. I was asked to go home when I fainted from lack of sleep and food. I was driven home, on the ride I slept, and dreamed all of this was just a nightmare. When I woke back home, 35 miles from the city, I remembered it was reality. I found that our hospitals were calling for volunteers. I showered, ate a sandwich and went back to help. All I could do, and still it was not enough. Several days later they found my friend. One of her legs was completely gone, the other was partically gone, she had managed to drag herself down several flights of stairs, before she bled to death. These terriorists took her legs, and ultimately her life, but not her soul or her spirit, for it lives on in many Americans. I feel it deep within me each and every day. It was my day off and I had paged a friend of mine who is a cop and waited for his responce. I never did get that call back. Little did I know the country was being atacked. I sat down to watch Martha Stewart and Guiding Light. When I turned on the tv my whole life changed. I saw the country I love being attacked. I thought that there was something wrong with my cable service and then I relized that this was real. The first thing I did was call my mother in Maine. I told her what was happening and she asked me if I was playing some kind of crule joke on here. Then we got disconected. I was so scared that something had happend to my mom that I franticly called her back. After three tries I finaly got a hold of her. We did not hang up for almost six hours because we were not shure what was happening, and we did not know if we would ever speak again. Mom is ok, I am ok. Today is September 11, 2002. One year has past. The sadness still comes sometimes, but the heartbreak will always be there. At the time, one year ago, I drove a taxi in Woburn Ma. I usualy went to Logan Airport two or three times a day, without thought. After the tragedy I always was nervous about going to the airport. I ended up leaving the job because I was scared I might pick up a terorist in my taxi. What happend to me on that day is nothing compared to the victums and their familys. I remember that other teachers came running into my class, telling my teacher to turn on the television. A female teacher explained to my teacher that the rest of the students in the school were not being told what was happening, I assume because they were deemed too young. They were, however, told that a crisis was occuring. We switched to the news to see the swath of smoke coming from the first tower. Then, in utter silence and shock, we watched the second plane careen into the other tower. Some of the kids uttered remarks of astonishment, but most of us were silent. I remember my teacher kept saying "this is terrible.... oh, this is terrible." No one could concentrate on school after that, so my teacher ignored his schedule for that day and we began to discuss the events. Every class was called down to the cafeteria, and I remember that all the others student were very confused, having no idea what was going on. My class was the only class who knew and we were instructed to keep quiet. A while later teachers walked around the room and asked every table of students if anyone's parents worked in the Pentagon. Seeing as to the previous events, it wasn't hard to guess how the Pentagon was involved. Some of the kids who had parents who worked in the Pentagon got very upset, now realizing what it meant. My father works in DC, and I was a little bit worried, but was relatively confident that his building was far enough away, assuming that the Pentagon was the only building attacked in DC. The teachers tried to get us to continue the day as normal, but the air of calm that usually surrounded their authority was broken. We were not allowed outside for recess, and all after school activities were cancelled. At the end of the day, instead of waiting in front of the school for buses as usual, students were made to stay inside until their bus came. At home, I learned that my soccer practice was canceled. The rest of the day is a blur, so many people saying so many things, so much emotion... When it first happened everyone was pretty quite about it. No one really talked about it, or tried to explain what was going on. When I got home my grandmother was crying and I could tell she had been crying all day long, she had the news on and asked me to sit with her and watch the news. As I sat there I realized how many people were killed and how many kids were left without mothers or fathers, or how many parents we left without children. Or sisters and brothers lost. And I tried to put myself in their spots, how would I be able to deal with losing someone so close? I didn?t think I could do it. When my mom came home, her and my grandmother talked and cried together. They just couldn?t believe it. How could so many people be killed and never get to say good-bye, or just think they were off to a normal work day and never be going to work again? And the people who saved the lives of the few who were still alive, or the firefighters who lost their life?s trying to save people they didn?t even know. When I grow up, I know I will look back on this day of my child hood and still have questions, of how could me and everyone else be in school at work, sleeping where ever they may have been and know we didn?t have any idea of what was going on and it took this much pain and lose of life?s to realize how much people mean and how things can happen with out knowing. I will also always remember how the next morning, every house I passed there was a flag, people had patriot shirts on, and flags on there car windows, on there books and I will never forget how after it seemed like everything was ok, everyone quite, you don?t see to many flags on the cars now, every here and there, you?ll see a flag in a yard. The main reason we went to Hawaii was for the Arizona Memorial. The day we were there, which was days before 911, my husband took a beautiful picture of the American Flag waving on top of the Arizona Memorial. We were scheduled to fly back home on Tuesday, September 11th. My husband got up first and started getting ready as I turned on the television set. What I saw was unbelieveable and I didn't quite understand what whas happening. My husband heard the words that an airplane flew into the World Trade Center and he immediately said that we were being attacked. I kept asking him why would someone would attack us. I immediately called my family and no one understood what was going on. We then heard that all flights were cancelled. We had no way of getting home. We were in Hawaii and we obviously couldn't drive back to California. We were stuck in Hawaii for another week. People said to us that we were lucky to be stuck in Hawaii of all places. We didn't feel that way at all. We were glued to the TV the entire time. We had our flag waving from the balcony of our hotel room. We were both just so sad that thousands of people had died. I couldn't sleep for nights thereafter thinking that something my happen in the middle of the night. Tell us your story: On the morning of Sept. 9, 2001, my father and I embarked on a week-long backpacking trip along the Mid State Trail in central Pennsylvania. By Tuesday morning, 9/11, we had hiked 30-some miles, our food reserves were fine, and we were planning to continue at least until Thursday afternoon. We hadn't seen another person in over two days. At around 9 am, about the time the first planes hit the World Trade Center, a bizarre omen appeared to us: a six-foot black snake appeared in the middle of our path. After a few well-tossed pebbles, the snake departed, and we continued. Still, we had absolutely no inkling that anything beyond our trail was even remotely out of the ordinary. At 2pm, after a difficult ascent and then descent of some particularly rocky pinnacles in the Rothrock State Forest, we arrived at Raymond B. Winter State Park, where we decided to stop for an hour or so to catch our breath and eat some lunch. Soon after entering the park, we encountered a road crew doing some work, and we were stopped by the project foreman. He asked us how long we had been hiking, and after we replied a few days, he said, "so I guess you haven't heard what happened. Government's been shut down." Dad, thinking it was some budget impasse or other nonsense, said, "Good, it's about time." The foreman said, "no, you don't understand. World Trade Center's been destroyed, the Pentagon's been hit, they're talking about something else out near Pittsburgh, we're under attack." As we walked away, I asked Dad, "you think he's yanking our chain? You think he tells this to all the guys who walk out of the woods looking like us?" Dad said, "I dunno, but I suspect he's probably full of shit." As we walked on, we discussed the possibility that it was real, and who was to blame. I mentioned a name I had heard, Osama-someone, but I also brought up the fact that it might be someone home-grown, an extraordinarily successful Timothy McVeigh. Dad agreed, but said that the first thing we should do is find a pay phone and call my mother, who was at home about 40 miles away. All lines to my home town in Pennsylvania were busy, but I managed to get through to my office. My office was then, and is now, in Alexandria, Virginia, about three miles from the Pentagon. My receptionist told me that, yes, this had all really happened, and that Alexandria was like a ghost town. The facts were confirmed by a park ranger who was closing up the park office, despite the fact that it was the middle of the afternoon on a Tuesday. All state offices had been closed. Still not remotely comprehending what had happened, Dad and I discussed continuing the hike, and I even took some pictures of hummingbirds buzzing around a bird feeder at the park office. But when we finally reached my mother, she said, "you aren't going anywhere. I'm coming to pick you up." I guess the enormity of it all didn't come home to me until I actually saw the images on the news that night at my mom's house. I just kept thinking, "this isn't real.
