Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My day on September 11 September 11, 2002 was just like any other day; I woke up for school around 6:30 am. I got up and got dressed, finished getting ready and then my sister was in the car waiting for me. We left for school at around 7:30am and stopped at the store first to get our usual breakfast sandwiches. When I got to school it was like any other day I talked in the hall with all my friends about the latest gossip. Then when the warning bell rang Jill, Kristen and I walked my friend Jessica to her class like we do every morning. After that Kristen and I went to our first period class, which is gym so were allowed to be a little late. We hung out in the hall for a couple more minutes. Gym class is pretty cool for us because our teacher lets us do pretty much whatever we want to do. That day we played volleyball, which is cool because Kristen and I are really good at it. Also, in our class we have a lot of people play and its really fun. After gym, I went to my second period class, which is Global. In my 9th grade Global class, we had just started learning about the Taliban and life in Afghanistan. All of a sudden Mr. Upton another global teacher came running in our classroom and was telling us to hurry up and turn on the television. So my teacher Mrs. Capen turned on the television and we all saw the twin towers. One of them was on fire and people everywhere were yelling and running around panic stricken. As we were all watching, all of a sudden, another plane came flying around and crashed right into the other tower. We all sat there staring at the television in amazement and shock not knowing what was happening. At first I thought that our teacher Mrs. Capen was playing a big trick on us because we had just started learning about the Taliban, terrorism and Osama Bin Laden. I realized after a minute when everyone was freaking out that it was not a joke and that it was for real. I was in complete shock and did not know what to think. We saw people everywhere running around screaming. Little fires and explosions were happening everywhere. Everyone was running and ducking from all the things flying in the air even the reporters were ducking behind cars. The rest of the day was very hectic; televisions were on in every classroom. Walking down the halls all you could hear were the televisions on the news and people talking about the Twin Towers and the crash. Everyone was in complete shock. In every class we would just watch the news. No one was teaching a normal class. There were rumors going around that we were going to be sent home because we have a power plant right next to us that power generates a lot for New York City, we were worried that they might try to blow the power plant up. The principle kept us in school, everyone even the teachers had to leave right at 2:18 though. Everything was canceled sports, clubs, and any meetings that day. All the talk in lunch was about what was happening. Even the televisions in the lunchroom were all on. Everyone in lunch was worried about many different things. My one friend Jade was worried because her dad works in the power plant and it was in threat of getting bombed or hit so everyone was freaking out and very worried. All of us play sports and all of our games were canceled. We had a big volley ball game that day and my friends had a big field hockey game and they all had to be rescheduled for a new day because we all had to go home. When I got home all the televisions in the house were on the new and that is all we watched all night. This experience for me was strange; I mean you always hear about this stuff happening in other countries I never thought something like this would happen here. I also never thought it would happen during my lifetime, but I knew it could and it did. While I was waiting on them I layed on my couch with the television on and fell asleep. I was having an odd dream that I was on a talk show like Jerry Springer with one of my old bosses. I remeber I wasn't paying much attention to the host of the show and was playing with the shoe strings on my shoe. The host of the show was saying "Why would anyone want to attack the World Trade Center" I heard my dog bark at the door so I woke up to let them in. As I was walking to the door I was remembering my dream and thinking how strange it was. I let the dogs in, turned around to walk back to the couch and heard the reporter on t.v. say "It's been confirmed that it was a plane that hit the WTC" I sat down and started watching. To my horror, within seconds of focusing on the television the second plane hit while I was watching live! I immediately called my husband at work but he was not there. I told his employees to turn on a radio or t.v. to know what was going on. I then called my Mom in Louisiana to see if she was seeing the same thing I was. Of course she was and the whole reality of the situation hit me and I became sick to my stomach. I spent the entire day in front of the television with my dogs next to me on the couch, calling friends and loved ones. When my husband finally got home I hugged him and we both cried. That was a day I will never forget and no American should. We should all live life like there's no tomorrow and cherish every day we have together. God Bless America!!!!! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am a 5th grade elementary school teacher in the nearby city of Grand Praire, TX. I live on the other side of the dividing road that is Arlington, TX. On the morning of September 11th I arrived at school at about 7:00 a.m. I don't watch televison or listen to radio once I get to school, so I would not have any idea of the events that were about to unfold as they happened. When the bell rang at 8:30 a.m. one of my students told me that they had heard on the radio on their way to school that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. I look at the child and said "sure it did, now go sit down". I simply did not believe it! A little while later my husband called my classroom and told that two planes had hit the World Trade center and that the Pentagon had now also been hit. I was in disbelief. We were under attack! I remained calm and said nothing to the children. I did not know how I would explain this to them. They viewed their world, the U.S. as safe. When the children went to their Gym class I turned on the T.V. and saw the horror of the World trade center. I actually saw footage of people leaping out of the buildings! It was horrific. Soon, parents started to arrive to pick up their kids. The school board decided not to cancel classes, but parents could go and get their children. This posed a problem, as I had not wanted to explain this to my class. I felt that it was best to let their parents try to explain such a difficult catastrophe. However, as the parents of some of the children arrived, this upset those who were left behind so much that we spent the rest of the day discussing what was going on. I assured them that they were safe,and one boy said "I am sure that all of those people who just went to work today or got the planes thought that they were safe too." He was so right. This event redefines our images of safety. America was under attack from a cowardly enemy. The next day (September 12, 2001) I gave each child a piece of paper and an envelope and had them write about who they were on this day and time and about their feelings of the previous days events. Once they were finished they each sealed their letter in the envelope and wrote on the outside of it to open it in twenty years. It will be a valuable look at this event throught eyes of a child. We will no longer ever be that innocent again. God bless America and those who have given their lives so that our great Nation may live! Tell us your story: We had just gotten done with Primetime (the first twenty minutes of the day) when I got to my homeroom, a kid named Alex told me that there were planes flying into the buildings! And everybody was freaked out. As soon as the teacher, Mrs. Lee turned on the t.v. everybody watched in horror as the first plane struck the first tower. Later I had learned that my friend had said that that day couldn't get any worse. All we had for homework for the rest of the week was to watch the news. That day, we all watched the news in every class that we went to, even gym. It was a very sad day and I really do feel bad for the people that lost some loved ones that day, or the people that lost loved ones during the war. He came back in and told us about the plane hitting the WTC. We thought it was an acident then we turned on the TV and watched as the 2nd plane hit. Tell us your story: Although I was "safe" in my home on that deeply sorrowful day, I was still affected on not a physical level but a emotional and spiritual level...disbelief then shock then a mixture of fear, helplessness, compassion, confusion, and hopelessness flooded my being. What was next? And on this anniversary, some of the same feelings have resurfaced as though a year has not gone by; confusion being the greatest. How can we as human beings not recognize our connectedness on a daily, hourly, etc. basis...without a tragedy to thrust us into this recognition? How long will we go on without compassion for each other whether we are burning in buildings or parentless or hungry? When will we band together on a regular basis to give, to care for, and to love one another regardless of race, creed, or financial status? When will there be true equality, peace, and harmony amongst us? We are ONE people in a myriad of shapes and colors. We are ONE family, all children of God, brothers and sisters under ONE love. My heart aches to see the world going in the direction in which it is going. Retaliation, selfishness, intolerance, and thus self-destruction. Around the world, we die every day. Everytime some is murdered or starves to death, though that whole individuals dies..rings of death expand touching each one of us like a pebble dropped in a pond. I prefer the feed from his New York station over his local affiliate. As I was driving south through Windsor, CT I heard Imus say something about a plane hitting the World Trade Towers. Having vacationed in New York and having visited the WTC with my husband and two children just the month before, my blood immediately ran cold with the "what if" scenario that ran through my mind. Mr. Imus introduced regular contibutor Warner Wolf to offer comments on what he had seen and heard. At that point, I thought it was just one of his "bits", this could not really be true - then, quickly, I realized it was real. Still, it had to be an accident. At that point I had arrived at the Federal Court House building in Hartford to go into my meeting. I said good morning to the Federal Marshals and told them the news that I had just heard. This was the first that they had heard of it. Still, I dismissed it as an accident. Since most people were already at the meeting location, I shared the news I had heard, no one yet knew the gravity of the situation. After my meeting was concluded, I called my mother's travel agency from a hallway pay phone to find out if she had heard the news, approximately 1 hour had passed. As I spoke with one of her agents, Barbara Mango, Barbara was extremely aggitated about what was still not known to be an attack. Barbara narrated the news report she was watching, as I spoke with Barb, the second plane hit the second tower, the reaction that Barb had was, and still is, indescribable. It was clear now that our country was under some sort of attack. I got sick to my stomach, hung up the phone and went to my car, pausing only moments to have a parting conversation with the Marshals about the event apparently unfolding that day. The drive home seemed to take an eternity. My son was in school and my daughter was with her nanny playing with some friends. When I got home I called our nanny to tell her I would pick up my daughter early, but first, I wanted to watch the news to get updated before the kids came home, those were images I could not bear to have them watch. It was at that time that the first tower fell. My first thought was about my high school friend Christopher Blackwell. I knew, just knew without any confirmation at that very moment that Chris was not only there, but was in the Tower when it fell. Chris was already decorated for his valor by the New York City Fire Department. Even if it was not his shift, nothing would have kept him from being one of the first ones in to rescue the innocense. How right I was. Chris was a member of heroic Rescue 3. I could not watch any more. I left the house, picked up my daughter, then my son at school. It was difficult not turning on the television to watch the updates as they came in, but those were images I did no want my children to see, not just yet. I sat down with paper and crayons and told my children the news of the towers falling. We got out our vacation photos and turned to the pages with us at the top of the Twin Towers. I told them that they are not there anymore, that someone had knocked them down. Then I let them watch one sequency of news footage and turned off the TV. The children spent the rest of the day drawing pictures, some quite profound. I will save those pictures always. My boyfriend's roomate already had the television on. I was horrified at the sight that was in front of me. All I had inside me was a sinking feeling that made me shiver all over. The news just kept re-playing the airplanes crashing into the towers, sights of people running for their lives. Then it was like one big ball dropped in my stomache. The first tower collapsed. I burst into tears and couldn't help but think about all the people still inside the tower, on the stairs, in the elevator shaft, trying desperatly to get themselves, their friends, their loved ones, out of that building. I couldn't imagine being their for that sight, or being in tower #2 and watching tower #1 fall. I was disgusted, I watched the news all day, hoping and waiting to see the miracle of survivors in the rubble, by this time it was already discovered that the heroic passengers on the PA flight all perished and the flight that went into the Pentagon didn't cause as much damage or death as the terrorists intended. I can still see the smoking towers, the sight as the plane hit tower #2, the crumbling of two great architectural marvals...I will always carry this with me, it will always bring tears to my eyes, I will never forget those we have lost, those that have lost, those that survived, those that risked their lives to save another. Tell us your story: September 11th 2001 began as a average day in school at Northwestern Lehigh HS, students talking, teachers yelling for them to get to class, students rushing around trying to see as many people as possible before class begins, but soon my life will drastically change for the worse. I was sitting in history class listening to the teacher lecture the lesson to the class when all of the sudden the t.v. was turned on at the bottom of the screen I appeared..."Breaking news, the Twin Towers have been hit!" In my mind I couldn't believe that this could be true. I watched in horror as I saw a large plane slam into the north tower around 8:45 a.m. I was in disbelief of what was happening, how could anyone ever do such a horrible, life-altering thing? My class and I were in awe as we watched the second plane barrel into the south tower. As we watched in anger, and disbelief, we saw people waving shirts and cloths out windows trying to call for help, people jumping out of windows, and people running franticly down the street. Then the most heart-stopping thing happened, the south tower clasped right in front of our eyes, and then later the north. It was the most horrific sight I have ever seen in my life. Later on the news, it was announced that a plane had hit the Pentagon and one had crashed, after it had been retaken control by brave Americans, in the small town of Shanksville, Pennsylvania. It is now September 11th, 2002, a year after this tragedy happened. I am still shocked and somewhat confused about how anyone can cause such pain when i see photographs or tapes of Twin Towers and to think that they I will never again see or visit this wonderful landmark. Many memorial ceremonies have been held in remembrance of the over 3000 lives lost. We held a service outside our school to pay tribute to the brave soles that died for there county. To me, they will be in my heart forever. I pray for the families that have lost love ones, and hope that they can get though this horrible event. I believe that our country is strong and determined and will get through this as one united nation. "God Bless America!" On August 17th I delivered my first child, a boy, by emergency C-section. He had been in the NICU ever since and I spent every day, all day at the hospital waiting for him to come home. I was watching the Today show when they started getting reports that there was some sort of explosion at the World Trade Center, they began interviewing a woman who was on the streets and was witnessing the fireball when all of the sudden the 2nd tower was hit. I remember standing there in disbelief with my husband. We watched, captivated and unable to move for the next few munutes and then I realized that I had to get to the hospital. I needed to see and hold my baby. The hospital is very close to Bush Intercontinental Airport and on the way there we heard on the radio that all planes were to land immediately. It was surreal how all of the sudden the sky was filled with airplanes and then it was just quiet. We were sitting at a red light and I looked over at the car next to us and there was a woman and she mouthed the words..."can you believe this??" We both just looked at each other and cried, I don't know who she was but I felt such a connection to her at that moment, she was feeling as hopeless and helpless as I was. This past year has been such a blessing for my family. We have a beautiful healthy 1 year old son and I thank God each day, at the same time though my heart aches for all of the mothers who had small children or were pregnant when they lost their husbands. I am a much calmer person now than I ever was I don't "sweat the small stuff" as the saying goes. I wake up each day with gratitude to live my life the way it is. I don't really want for anything anymore, I have everything that is important to me and I will continue to hold onto them and never take their love for granted. In my time in New York, I became a New Yorker. On Sept. 11, 2001 I was already at work when my husband called me and said that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I responded with, I am not surprised and hung up. At that time I did not realize that what he was talking about was a commercial jet liner. My apartment had faced that Twin Towers and for years I watched small planes and helicopters fly very close. I had assumed it was one of them. After I left the nursing facility where I was at to head the my next facility, I got in my truck and turned on the radio. I was in total shock at what I heard. Another plane hit the second Tower. Oh my God. Then the tears began to flow. The fear of my friends fates was overwhelming. I called my husband and begged him to call my best friend in New York to see if she and her family were okay after repeated attempts on my cell phone were unsuccessful. I only worked 2 more hours after that. I went home and like the rest of America I was glued to my t.v.. I watched the scenes unfold with total disbelief. At first I had fear and tears, then became angry. I finally heard from my best friend 2 days later. All circuits had been busy. Everyone was okay. Her husband who is in the NYPD, had the day off that day. His district was near the Towers. It was not his time. One year later, it seems harder to deal with. Maybe it was the added time to reflect. Maybe it was knowing more of the details. The death totals, the heros, seeing the faces of ones that were lost, knowing that some friends of mine were saved by being late or sick that day, or maybe it was the sad truth that 2 of my friends did die that day. Tell us your story: As time goes by and memories fade as they seem to do, a lot of people may not understand how it could effect us way out here in California. I only have extended family that lives in New York, but if any of them had been involved it would effect the people I love out here. And of course I have many friends and co-workers with family and loved ones that were too close to let you feel relaxed. But the one that had the biggest impact on me was the sister of a teacher. He was my daughters high school biology teacher, Mr. Joe Stasen. Days went by and he still hadn't heard from her. Being so far away made it even harder on him. He agonized over not being there to help, and not hearing from her. All the kids in all of his classes were effected by this caring, loving young mans need to know his sister was alright. On the fourth day the news we were all waiting for finally came. She was alive. I write this not to minimize all the tragic stories you will hear, but to tell a story of how we all were effected in some way. Be it either direct or indirect. This morning I started watching the coverage at 5 am pacific standard time. I listened for two and a half hours to every name that was read, and looked at every picture they showed. It took me much longer to get ready for work because the flow of tears made putting on make-up impossible. I saw all the babies born after the 9-11 attack. Crying and smiling, crawling and sleeping, as they tried to take a group shot. I listened to two teenage girls read what they had written for their fathers memorials. "I wish that I had told him that I loved him that morning". "I miss him so much, I never told him that he was the best parent any kid could ask for, even if he was my stepdad". Regret for life. If we learn nothing else from so much tragedy, we must learn not to think that there is always going to be a tomorrow. We will always hope for that, but don't put off saying the "I love you's" and the "You are so important to me's". There might not be another time to say them. I told him that I wasn't, and I could tell by the tone of his voice that something was seriously wrong. He said that "we were under attack" and that someone had driven a plane through the World Trade center, and and that another plane had hit the other tower just after. He said that he had heard that the Pentagon was also hit, and that "they" didn't know if there were more planes out there ready to hit other buildings. My initial reaction was shock and fear. Then I turned on the television, and watched in horror as people leaped to their deaths from the burning towers. Beining a very nossey child, I was listening to the libarian talk to another teach about the news. So I listened to the news to see what they were talking about. The news reporter was talking about the tragity that had happened in New York. I grew very worried because my great uncle work in the twin towers and my grangmother lived out there. I stoped paying attention to my lesson and had eyes and ears on the television. That afternoon when I got home from school I saw my mama trying to hold in her tears. I asked her why she crying, but she turned away in disappointment. My sister had told me that our uncle and grandmother had just died in the twin towers. I felt bad because not just love ones of other people had died, but the ones I loved most had passed away also. I will continue life remembering the my love ones and so will others. I was settling into my office when our executive secretary was practically running down the hall informing us that one of the planes had hit one of the Twin Tower. At first, I thought it was some mistake for I thought how could that be possible. I remember we quickly ran to find a radio and got on the internet. It was horrifying to hear as the events unfold before our eyes. We felt hopeless like a sitting target not knowing if we were going to be next. At about 11:00a.m. I went downstairs to the lobby of the building...people were everywhere, some running, some walking quickly, trying to get out of the building and out of the parking garage as fast as they can. I walked over to the glass window facing Smith Street...cars were lined bumpers to bumpers but nobody was going anywhere. People were honking their horns, fire trucks were trying to make their way through by sounding off their horns but people stuck at a stand still. Tell us your story: Throughout the years of sitting in History classes learning about America?s past conflicts and wars, I never would have thought I would live through one myself. As a whole, most Americans feel as if America is a strong, superior country compared to others. As we found on September 11, 2001, although superior, we can not defend against all. Before this tragic day, there were absolutely no worries, except for coming unprepared to class with an upcoming test for which I did not study. In history class I never recall learning about terrorism or the Muslim religion. Only two weeks into the school year terrorists attack our country. I was sitting in Mr. Cronin?s psychology class. We were experimenting with a lab that seemed too difficult to understand. He got the message from another teacher to turn on the television. There, we saw an image of the World Trade Center; a plane had struck it. Not thinking it was anything to worry about, Mr. Cronin turned off the TV. We got back to the unending lesson. Nobody thought anything of the news. In between classes, people were talking nonstop about the disaster. Everyone was terrified and frantic. When I reached my fifth period class, our teacher agreed to let us watch the TV. He insisted that it was necessary to watch and pay close attention to the horrific news about our country. By the end of the day I was exhausted. My brain was drained from feeling such heartache. I arrived home and accompanied my mother watching the television- No surprise. We talked about the issue some, then proceeded with our daily schedule. I could not concentrate on doing my homework. For once, it just was not important. I made time to reflect back on what had happened. I had never felt so angry towards another country until now- until they questioned our strength and took advantage of us. I felt sad for the families who dealt with their loved ones who died. I could easily put myself in their shoes. Knowing what it is like to lose a loved one, makes it so much harder to see or hear about others going through the same discomfort. I wanted revenge. All I could have asked for was to at least bomb their country; we needed to prove to them that we were capable of defeating them in whatever they were trying to prove-we are much stronger. The solid image of the people of Iraq dancing in the street still remains in my mind. To see people so joyous by others? pain makes me wonder how happy they are with their own lives. Since September 11th, I have been able to let go of feeling so angry. I have forgiven the people who have done us wrong. The only way to live my own life with happiness is to not have such hateful, angry feelings towards others. We must learn to move forward. Americans are patriotic and are willing to die for their country. We are united more than ever, and will stay so by the remembrance of September 11th.
