I tookd my son to school and returned home,shortly after we arrived back to the house my husband called and told me to turn on the television. I knew that something was wrong by the sound of his voice. When I looked up at the TV and heard what they were saying I was numb. I stayed glued to the news unable to move. A few day's prior to the attack we had gathered for a family reunion, members had come from all over the country. I called my mom to see if any one was scheduled to leave out of the area Air Ports. For us we didn't have any one heading out that day. All I could think of was that I needed to have my family together. I called the school that my son attends to say that I would be coming to get him and was told that a number of people had the same idea. While on the phone with the school I was told about one of the teachers who's husband works in the towers could not be reached. When I arrived at the school I tried to help in any way I could find out about her husband. But the phones into the area were out. All means of communication as we've come to rely on were useless. I kept in contact with the school to check on the teacher and was releived to find out that her husband was in one of the towers when they came down, but was able to get out with a few scrapes. I recently took a trip around Manhattan on the Cirle Line, when we reached the tip of the island i cried. The view that we took for granted was not the same and never will be. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Words can not express the dismay I felt while driving to work on 9/11/01 when I heard the radio reports. At frist I thought that it was a hoax, a horrible attempt at bad humor. Upon arrival at work, being the only one in the office that AM I turned on the radio again and heard the reports coming in from all over. My husband and I had just made our first trip to NYC in April of 2001. We had taken pictures from atop the WTC and in the windows of the upper floor. I could not fathom such a building being hit with an aircraft and the damage, the people that it was affecting. Stunned I remembered my husband had taken the BART system early this AM to San Francisco to meet with an attorney with a partner to discuss and sign new papers for their new business venture. They were to meet right next to the Bank of America building. My heart sank as I realized if San Francisco were hit, he could be in danger. We however were fortunate. Fear and tears for the people who were trapped were constant that day. I will never forget the anguish and loss I felt for so many who risked their lives to help others. I will never forget the scene which unfolded through pictures as the days ensued. I will never again take for granted the freedom I hold dear to live my life as I choose. I know that I will never feel the loss of the thousands who never saw their loved ones again, but as a nation I know that we all pulled together and held our heads high, and we will over come. Tell us your story: I never would have imagined such an incredible, terrible, hateful event would take place just weeks into the start of my college career. At the time, things on my mind included grades, getting along with my four roomates, visiting my girlfriend at her school, and homework. On that particular morning, I was sitting in my astronomy lab at GMU. My lab partner, whose name I forget, whose face I will probably never recall, was late to class. Holding his cell phone in his hand, he told someone told him a plane flew into the World Trade Center. I thought, and asked him, if it was an accident? He didn't know. Now, usually, I would take advantage of the lab and do a tiny bit of web surfing. I don't recall now if I hit any news sites during that class on that day, but I do remember this. I left the class after my assignment was completed. Walking back to my dorm in Presidents' Park (the freshmen living area), I noticed an abnormal amount of people on their cell phones. Being in the center of northern Virginia at a school diverse and populated as Mason, cell phones are not uncommon, but everyone, and I mean EVERYONE was on theirs, in the parking lot, on the walkways, and everywhere in between. I climbed three flights of stairs to my room, and opened the door. I don't remember if the TV was already on (I think it was), or if I turned it on, but from that moment on I joined the rest of the world in watched those fateful events unfold. It wasn't on TV, but on my web browser's main page that I first heard about the collapse, then later the Pentagon. I remember trying to call my family, but to no avail...with a campus of thousands, my measly call would not get through. I did manage to reach my girlfriend though, and I remember telling her we would be ok. Soon, parents began to arrive to some of their children, some calls did make it through, and the rest of that day, as they say, is history. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was driving to work with a group at a hospital near the coast of Lake Michigan. I was driving through some beautiful woods, flipping through radio stations looking for a song when I stumbled on a simulcast from CBS but I thought they were talking about a fire in a local tower. When I heard it was the World Trade Center I picked up my cell phone and flipped through my planner looking for my cousin's phone number because he doesn't work very far from the Trade Center. I wanted to be sure he was okay. For some crazy reason my call got through to his answering machine at work so I left a message. My daughter called me on the phone and was crying and wanted to know about my family members in New York. I told her to call one of the cousins I knew would be home. My cousin called me back and said he was getting out of there fast. I didn't hear from him again for 6 and half hours. He left his building about the time the first tower collapsed. I started to cry because I have another cousin who works for Con Ed and I knew that because of his job he would be at the Towers assessing damage. I thought he was dead. I am originally from the New York area and my father was a New York city cop. I felt as though my hometown was being destroyed. I got home as fast as I could to check on the rest of my family-the Firefighter cousin, the policeman cousin, the teacher cousin. I found out everyone was okay by communicating online with a relative. The only one we couldn't find was the Con Ed cousin. My other cousin had to walk uptown and across the 59th Street bridge to get transportation home. We eventually found the Con-Ed cousin alive but he had a close call. All of my family lived, but I still cried for the others who simply went to work and died.When I visited the site in April it was mostly cleaned up but I remembered other happier times spent in the area, but I still cry for those who lost someone cause it could have been me too. She was nearly hysterical and I couldn't really understand what she was saying. I just knew whatever it was, it was very, very bad. I can remember feeling so frightened and shaking so badly I could hardly turn the TV on. What I saw is beyond my ability to describe. The total disbelief, the inability to comprehend how this could be happening in our country, the soul felt compassion for the innocent victims and their families....the horror of the barbarian attack and yes, the fear that that was only the begining of a nation wide attack and the selfish wondering when they would reach us. I felt numb and can remember all of us just sort of wandering around saying "oh God, oh God." There were no other words. I lived in NYC for 5 years and went up the WTC many times, I took all my out of town visitors up to the Windows on the World resturant. I've closed my eyes and tried to imagine the last image so many people had of a huge airliner coming straight at them and it is such a horrific picture I can't bear it. What happened on Sept.11th was pure evil. It must be eradicated from the face of this earth if any of us the world over are to ever feel safe again. One of the military men killed at the Pentagon graduated from my high school 2 years ahead of me. I did not know him, but I believe that everyone in this country was touched personally by some loss, no matter how far removed. My heart breaks for the families of the victims and the grief that today must be flooding back 100 fold, but to them I say "be proud." You're loved one died in a war for this country and we will all be forever grateful. And we will NEVER forget their sacrifice. Tell us your story: i was on my way to second block, and had heard speculations that there was some big attack, but i mean its high school, you dont know whats true and whats not. And right before the bell rang someone came over the announcements and said that something had happened, i was still half asleep. the only part of the announcmet i had heard was something about the twin towers, which i barely even knew where they were, and they said that there was an explosion there or something bad ahd happened. they said dont panic and i didnt because i didnt feel i needed to, but as i started walking towards my next class, i started thinking about how big and important they were, and my stomach started to slowly turn. as soon as i reached class a t.v was on and no one was talking. i just set my stuff down and started watching. i was in disarray. i could not believe what my eyes were seeing. but then my teacher turned the t.v off and made us start class. it was hard to concentrate on work when u knew what was happening. as the day went on, u were just praying that everyone would b safe. as soon as i got home my mom was watching the stuff on t.v and i joined her. i couldnt move after that. i couldnt think about anything else. it was like u couldnt take ur eyes off the t.v screen because u were in such fear. i dont think i have ever prayed as much as i did that day. i prayed that my family would be safe and that everyone else i knew would b safe. At one stop we picked up a boy Named Paublo and he told us that a plane had hit the World Trade Towers. In my mind I pistured a small personal aircraft hitting a small building. My mom dropped us off and we got on the scoohl bus. On the radio we heard about the collision, but it wasn't in great detail, so I still had the same picture in my head, but now I was a little nervous. When I got to my school I went straight to my class instead of seeing my friends, and my teacher had the t.v. on. I watched as five minutes after I got there the second plane hit. It was devistating. I had no idea of the enormous scale of the building or the crash. There were close ups of people leaping from the flames, but only falling to the ground. I was thinking why would they be jumping, unless they were afraid of being burnt to death. Class activities were canceled as we watched in horror. I remember people crying and people being angry. My teacher was in a state of shock, but he tried to comfort us as well. I remember one kid called his parents on a cell phone, and they came and got him in fear of more attacks. This only caused more panic in the kids. Then an anouncment was mad by our clearly shakin principal, he said to remain calm,and please take the matter seriously as some kids thought it was a joke. We then turned our attention to the t.v. where the reporters were in tears, and so were the people around them. Then came the moment when the first tower fell, that is when we all started to cry. People on the t.v. were running in horror and disbelief. Then the bell rang and we had to go to our next class. There we continued to watch as the next tower came falling with the wieght of thousands of people still on it's back. No one had tearless eyes. We knew all kinds of people were in there, but there was nothing we could do. My girfriends mother was on the phone informing her that we were being attacked. She quickly passed that on to me as she turned on the television. By this point all of the planes had crashed. We were in utter amazement that this was happening. Soon after My girlfriend had to go to work so I went home. I had the day of but we had a departmental meeting, needless to say it was canceled. There was nothing I could do to get away from the T.V. I watched it for ten hours that day. While I watched updates and new camera footage I felt a whole range of emotions. These emotions ranged from empathy for the famlies who had lost loved ones to complete anger that anyone could do such a thing to innocent people. I also felt very vunerable, I as many other Americans could not believe that this could happen on our own soil. My mother always talked about remembering where she was when J.F.K. was shot and when we landed on the moon. I will always remember were I was on September 11 2001. I am sure we all will. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11,was the first day of my sophomore year of college at Furman University. I had a 9,10 and 11 o'clock class. I left for my 9 at about 8:45, and went to class. Class ran as schuduled, no one had heard anything so everything was normal. I couldn't even fathom how radically my world view would be changed in just a short hour. I went to my 10 o'clock class, the class sits down at attention and waits for the professor. The professor was late, something that professors are never supposed to do the first day. Immediatly it was evident that he was upset and had been crying, this was an upper level psych class, so we all begin to theorize about what had caused his distress. The professor began to speak, his voice broke, and he started to cry. He told us that New York had been attacked. He didn't know anything more than that, but he told us to go home and call our families, and to watch television. Most of us at this point in time thought this was great, we just got out of class in under 10 minutes. No one had any idea what we were going to be faced with as soon as we turned on the television. Instead of heading back to the dorms, I went to the bookstore to pick up an aditional book. When I walked into the bookstore, I was confronted with the first image of the attack on New York. I had never realized that there were televisions in the bookstore, but now they were the main focus. When I saw the television footage of the plane hitting the World Trade Center, chills ran up and down my back. Some of the students were crying, some were dumbfounded and for the first time in my life I was scared to be an Amercian. The cafeateria was a buzz with information, mostly false but still passed on excitily from friend to friend. "The National Mall is on fire!", "They hit Regan Naional". No one knew anything, the cafeteria workers were huddled around a small television that had been rolled in, and that area had been turned into a congragation place for people seeking solice. It was amzing to watch a college campus, that is refered to in jest as "the Bubble", to be so profoundly affected by events that were so far away. From that day on the world that I live in and the school that I attend have never been the same. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 10th I flew from National Airport in the D.C. area to Oceanside California. It was an early morning flight, and I remember driving past the Pentagon and taking a good look at it. I'd never really paid attention to it before, it was just a building that was always there, but for some reason I took a long look at it that morning. Thinking back to that feels a little weird. My fiance was in the Marine Corps, and was to return from a 6 month deployment to the middle east on Sept. 15th. The biggest worry on my mind was finding my way from the airport in San Diego to the car rental place, and from there to Oceanside, which is near Camp Pendleton where he was stationed. I didn't know that those worries would seem like the smallest most miniscule problems the following day. That night I checked into my hotel room, drove around the area a little, and fell asleep early. Around 630am California time I woke up and was about to get in the shower when my cell phone rang. I answered it, and it was my dad. I could tell something was wrong, but when he told me that planes had hit the World Trade Center and the Pentagon I thought he was kidding, I was in shock. Then what he said hit me, and I turned the news on. Seeing the footage of the planes hitting both towers, and seeing the smoke coming from the Pentagon obviously made me extremely upset. Both of my parents work within a mile from the Pentagon, and I was worried that more planes would be heading that direction. Then I started worrying that the west coast would be next, and was afraid because I was there by myself. After getting off of the phone with my dad I tried to get through to my mom for over an hour. The phones were tied up, I couldn't get through to anyone back home in the DC area. My dad had been standing outside of where he works when the plane flew overhead going towards the Pentagon, and he had called my mom (she works in Crystal City) to tell her to leave. So she had gotten a head start on leaving the city, and was lucky in that manner. People were literally walking away from the city, because traffic was so tied up you couldn't drive anywhere. Back in California, I ended up in the lobby of the hotel trying to find the closest place that I could get on the internet. Seeing the news footage on the tv in the lounge started me crying all over again, and the girl who worked at the front desk was nice enough to give me a hug and try to comfort me. It's something I will never forget, having someone I didn't even know comforting me. I found my way to a public computer station so I could email my fiance and ask him to call me that night, and went back to the hotel. I finally got through to my mom. We did a lot of crying over the phone together, trying to understand why people could hate us so much to do that. I also eventually got through to my best friend back home, and tried numerous times to get through to the Red Cross to find a place to donate blood. Later that day I couldn't take sitting in my room alone watching the news footage, so I left to find something to do. The mall was closed, in fact anyplace that a lot of people would normally gather at was closed. I ended up at a Target store walking around, just to be around people and try to take what had happened off of my mind for awhile. The worst part was knowing this had happened in my hometown, where I grew up, and that I couldn't do anything to help. I was worried about the President's safety, but knew that our country was in good hands with President Bush as our leader and took comfort in that. The next 2 weeks were very hard. My fiance returned from his deployment. Something that I had looked forward to for so long and that should have been joyous and exciting instead felt numb. Most of that first week is still a blur for me. I just remember being glued to the tv a lot, and trying to find out if the people I knew that worked at the Pentagon and the WTC were ok. The second week I spent trying to figure out how I was going to get home. I've never been a fan of flying, and after this I was pretty much terrified. I considered staying in CA, and also considered taking a train home (3 days!), but in the end I flew home. I wasn't about to let THEM win, and I knew if I didn't get the courage to fly then, I probably never would again. Tell us your story: I was at work and happen to be at the back of them store in Mcdonalds where i work as an Swing Manager and was watching the t.v. and saw the first plane go in to the first tower. We got on the bus and the radio was on and it was talking about the Twin Towers and planes. I drove to school and sat in my car waiting for the bell to ring for first period. I was listening to the radio and heard some commotion about something happening in New York but i changed the station to listen to music instead. When i finally walked into my first period, the televison was on and my teacher was watching. Everyone was kind of confused as to what was going on but it all came together quickly when we saw the replay of the towers falling. I was in shock as my teacher talked to us about how important this was and how this was going to be something we'd remember forever. None of us really understood the impact of what was going on. When i walked out of first period and walked to my second i thought of what this meant. I have family living in New York and people i knew that worked there. I all the sudden became frantic and ran to my car to call my mom. By then i was uncontrollably crying and the thought that i might have lost someone i loved in such a horrific accurance made me crazy. My mom hadn't been able to get a hold of anyone back east so we were all frantic with worry. I could hardly bare sitting in every class holding back tears that often times just came out. When i came home i ran and hugged my parents and just sat there and cried with my mom. We all watched t.v. with amazment that this could really happen. We finally got a hold of family members back east and found out that thankfully everyone was ok. We did know someone that was in the towers but she did make it out ok. It was hard for my family and me to overcome the shock of it all, and to tell you the truth i don't think we ever fully will. Tell us your story: I was home on the morning of September 11,2001 reading the morning paper and watching TV when I saw what had happened on TV on NBC I was really upset at what had happened to our Country. I have a Daughter that was a Flight Attendant for Continental Air Lines, stationed in New Jersey and I knew she was on duty that morning. I was very worried for all of America. I began to pray for all of the families that were effected by this attack and I prayed for my daughter to call and let me know she was ok and she finally did call and let me know that she was ok and not to worry. I watched tv all day long I just could not remove myself from the tv. I am very proud of America and all of the people that help in this time of need. My daughter did fly that day and for several month's after the attack she said she was not afraid to fly and some flight attendants were afraid to fly again and they did not fly after that day. She is no longer a flight attendant as she was laid off her job because of this attack on America but she enjoyed flying as this was her dream every since she was a teenager and she was living her dream. She has not been called back to work for Continental Air Lines. I am glad that I live in America and I am very proud of the way our President George W. Bush has handled things and still is handling America. He will go down in history as being one of the Greatest Presidents. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It looked like it was going to be a beautiful day. I was on maternity leave, in my home getting my son ready for the morning. He was barely four weeks old. The phone rang, it was my husband. He was a little out of breath and sounded strange. He told me there was an explosion at the World Trade Center and that there was also one in Washington, DC. I thought he was joking with me - I said yeah, right. He said really, turn on the TV. So I turned on the TV and almost fell to the floor. I could not believe what I was seeing - it was like watching a disaster movie, but the reality of the situation hit home and my head was spinning. I could not think of any of the things I needed to do that day, although there were a few. All I could do was watch the TV, switching back and forth from one channel to another to see if there was any difference in the coverage. Each channel was showing the same tragedy with little difference in the coverage. When the World Trade Centers collapsed the thought of all the people trying to get out and the people trying to help them get out brought me to tears. No escape, little hope for survivors - I could only imagine how the families of these people were feeling as they too watched the same coverage. My heart goes out to all of them. I was finally able to pull myself together and get my son ready to go out and go to the food store. I needed to see for myself what was going on. I drove to our local hospital - 10 minutes away - as you can see the New York skyline from the parking garage. All of the streets were blocked off into the hospital - I don't know why, maybe security, later I found out that some of the victims were being transferred to this hospital - but I found my way in. I drove up to the top of the parking tier with dread hoping that it wouldn't be real - I found many other people had the same idea. The side of the parking garage that faces the City was flooded with people who were, in my mind, also trying to face the reality of the situation. With a heavy heart I got back in my car and drove on to my destination, the food store. Once inside the store, I was shocked to see how busy it was. Walking up and down the aisles I noticed people with their carts full of things like bottled water, canned goods, toilet paper, etc. I decided to forget my regular shopping list and do the same - bottled water (almost none), canned goods, etc. Standing in line to pay for my purchases there was total silence, no usual chatter amongst the customers and check-out clerks, no children begging for candy or any of the usual bantering at the checkout. There was one elderly lady standing behind me in line, she must have seen the look on my face as I looked into the other faces looking for some sign of hope. She started a conversation with me about my beautiful son - how old was he, what was his name, what a beautiful baby, etc. A look of sadness came over her as she commented on what a shame the baby had to live in such a chaotic and scary world. That was the end of our conversation as we checked out and went our different ways. I went home and immediately turned on the TV to see continuing coverage. My husband came home shortly after that, we held each other very tightly and we watched the devastation together with our infant son sleeping peacefully in the next room, oblivious to the evil and drastic changes that would take place in our country. Over the next several days, and following weeks, my beautiful baby boy woke up early in the morning, as most babies do. I would take him out of our bedroom and into the living room so I would not wake my husband who had to go to work in a couple of hours, I would turn on the TV to watch the continuing coverage, and as the days and weeks went on, the personal stories of sadness, tragedy and fear unfolded on the news. As my son fell back to sleep, satiated from his bottle, I looked at pure innocence and held him very closely, and I cried. It is now one year later, my son is thirteen months old. He is the light of my life and a pure joy. My husband and I want the world for him and we will try to instill good values and patriotism into him every chance we get. Every day I drop my son off at the babysitter with my heart in my throat and a tear in my eye - will there be another 9/11 tragedy? will today be the day? will I be able to get to my son fast enough if I need to? will my husband be able to get to us if he needs to? Has my life changed because of this tragedy? YES. I fear for my family, my extended family, my friends and for mankind in general. I go about my daily routine - go to work, do things with my family, take care of my son and husband, but these questions are always in the back of my mind. I cannot even imagine the thoughts that go through the minds of the families and friends of the victims and the survivors. My prayers go out to all of them and for my son and husband and family and friends. We were second because the art class is next to the Tech. Ed. room and they ALWAYS have the news on in Tech. Ed.. I remember Mrs. Richmond (my art teacher) moving our class to the Tecch. Being afraid that you'll never see your loved-ones again. It's so agonizing. It's been a year and it still hurts to talk about. Today, my english teacher made us write about it. She asked if anyone would like to share thiers. As teared as I was, I volunteered and read aloud. The more I read, the more I wanted to cry. My voice got very cracked and tears strolled down my face. I dared not to look up because I knew everyone was stareing. Eventhough a bigger picture has been drawn, the little things still bother me.
