I arrived at my office at 8:30 and hopped onto cnn.com to check the news and scores from the day before. When we first heard about the crash on the North Tower, we couldn't log back on to cnn.com to see whta happened. We kept assuming it was a small engine plane, and it was an accident. Then my co-worker received emails from her husband in NYC, stating it was an airliner, and that the tower was burning. Ofcourse minutes after that, we heard the South Tower was hit. Next, was the pentagon. Were were in total shock. I felt like the world was going to end. I remember having this sickening feeling in the pit of my stomach. I remember my co-worker who was still talking to her husband through e-mail, telling us how people were just jumping out of the building, deciding their own fate. I went downstairs with some friends to have 3 or four cigarettes to calm my nerves. Everytime I heard a plane, I looked up, wanting to run. To make a longer story shorter, I left my office after the towers fell. I cried all the way home in my car, asking why? I watched the news from 10:45 that morning to 8:00 that night. And cried all night long, trying to block the horific images in my mind. I live about 30 minuted from NYC, and remember hearing the fighter jets in the distance. When I was in my car I couldn't understand why there was news on the local sparts talk station. As I learned what was going on my eyes misted with anger at what bastards would do this. I went home and watched the news until I had to go to soccer practice at the college I coached at. I had to drive past lambert International Airport and it was strange that day and the next few seeing all the planes parked. Practice was subdued that day and the next day at the end of practice I remarked that we were so used to practicing in the flight paths that it was so obviously quiet even with the usual voices of a team practicing. When I heard about the plane outside of Pittsburgh (nobody was giving specifics as to where)all I could think about was if my old college roommate was ok. One of our soccer players is an amazing artist and she drew an amazing picture of the burning towers with a potrait of President Bush and a fireman with his face in his hands and a candle...WOW! I then heard the song "Overcome" by the band "Live" Now it is almost a year later and I am still moved to tears. I have not become more of a patriot because, until I gave it to a foriegn student about to leave the country, I always had an American flag on my wall. I was always the guy telling people to take their hats off during the national anthem and be respectfull. I was proud of the first time I was able to vote. Nothing more or less unusual than any other day of my life. But, by the end of the day it was all like a dream, more like a nightmare. Never in all my life had I, and the rest of the U.S., ever imagined something like this could happen. I guess maybe, that's why we were such an easy target. We as a nation have been full of ourselves since we won our independence over 200 years ago. We all thought we were the invincible nation, which has a big force field around it. All this was running through my head all that day, and it still crosses my mind every now and then. For several days after 9-11 all I wanted to do was kill Bin Laden. But then I came to my senses and realized more killing was not the answer. How about this, we stop all trade of any kind to Afganastan, no oil, nothing. Now that would stop him for a long time. Afganastan would slowly destroy themselves with there own terrorism. Lastly, I thought a lot about the plane that went down in Pennsylvania. I thought about how I was proud to be American, because of those courageous Americans who took down the plane. They sacrificed themselves to save one of our biggest national symbols, the White House. 9-11-2001 has brought the people closer together not farther apart. One of the woman who was due to work for 9:00 in the morrning came running in to tell us that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Centers. We were all in shock we ran upstairs to the break room to see the coverage. Not able to stay away too long from the Deli we decided to put a TV on top of the deli and keep the coverage showing. We watched in shock all day long. Business died that day we had very few customers that day and we were normally a very busy store. The one thing i remember so clearly was the look of total disbelief on the faces of all who stopped to look at the coverage. One year later i look back to how niave i was before that fateful day. I would look at the news reports about aall the terrorist attacks over seas and think it could nevr happen her,,,now i know i was wrong. My class started at 11 am, and my stepmom had waken me up before everyone else left to go to school and work, so I was alone in the house, save the two dogs. I needed a break from the monotony of numbers and equasions (math is not exactly my cup of tea, if you know what I mean), and I had gone outside to get the newspaper to read for a little bit before completing my homework. As I was getting the paper, my next door neighbor opened the door to her house and asked me if I had been watching the news. I said no, I was doing my homework, and had come outside to get the paper. She said that a plane had crashed into one of the World Trade Center towers, and as the news cameras were filming the incinerating building, a second plane hit the other building. I remember she said, "It's like something out of a movie." I didn't really believe what she was saying until I went back inside and turned on the television and turned the channel to a news station. I didn't really believe what I was seeing. The Twin Towers were a smoking inferno, and all I could do was sit there and stare. My homework was the last thing on my mind now. When it hit home, I started to cry hysterically. The news about the Pentagon and the Philadelphia plane crash did not help, and I started to really think that the world was coming to an end and Jesus was coming back. I was praying and asking God to forgive me and please me enter the gates of Heaven. My boyfriend came to my mind, and I needed to talk to him and tell him that I love him. I called his house and woke him up (he worked late the night before, and was sleeping late) and told him through tears what had happened. He was sleepy, and didn't really comprehend what I was saying. He did tell me to calm down and try to soothe me, but imagine a sleepy guy not really understanding what is going on trying to calm down his hysterically passionate girlfriend. I drove to school and numbly went through my classes, and right after school I went to my boyfriend's work place and talked to him. I was afraid that my father might be called into the Navy, I was afraid that my boyfriend would be drafted, and I was afraid that this area might be hit. (I live in Hampton, Virginia, and we have several bases in the area: Langley AFB, Fort Eustis, Fort Monroe, Oceana NAS, Norfolk Naval Station, and the Newport News Shipyard, which is the largest shipyard in the United States.) I was on the phone with a friend of mind and he kept telling me that something huge was happening in that area! He's a delivery guy for a Gourment store in Manhattan so he was at that location at the time. All he said he saw was fire trucks. I told him when I got home I would check CNN to find out what was goin on. As soon as I turned on my television I saw something that seemed to be like a movie! There was a huge whole in one of the buildings with fire and smoke emerging from it! This I couldn't believe. I passed the message to my friend whom I was still on the phone with. He said that he knew it had to be something big because he saw a blue fire truck! Seeing a blue fire is crazy living in the area that we live in! I told him if he could to get away from that area before the traffic gets really bad and he wouldn't be able to get back to his store! As I telling him this, another plane was approaching the other building! I'm looking at the television in complete shock as this unfolds! I have a pretty good view of the World Trade Center from the roof of the building where I was living at the time so I grabbed my camcorder and headed for the roof. What I saw was a lot of smoke and that's really about it! As I'm taping, I realized something that never crossed my mind before. My brother worked at the World Financial Center across the street from the World Trade! I couldn't believe that I didn't think of this before everything else! I tried calling him but I received no answer. I guess there was a lot of people trying to use the phone at that time. Things got a little tense for me for a while till like around 11 a.m. when I finally heard from him. I'm thankful that my brother made it home safe and I feel for those who lost someone special! I seen the secretary in tears and my boss transfixed to the t.v. When I realized this was terrorism, my first thoughts were of the safety of my children since they were at school. And seeing the mass destruction of those huge buildings I just felt totally numb because I knew there was going to be a great loss of life involved in such destruction. When they told of a third plane coming through Pennsylvania, I got even more worried about my kids, what if they turned to Ohio? I didn't want to panic, so I just went in to get information as often as possible, and the secretary kept us informed also. With Wright Patterson being near it brought a lot of other fears about missiles and the fact that such a major base may also be targeted for a terrorist attack. My husband sometimes works on the base and I called to see where he was, but he was not there that day thank goodness. I couldn't wait to leave work that day and get my kids and get home to my husband, we spent the evening in shock over the total disregard for human life these terrorists had. Our hearts still ache for this loss of life, we are proud of the people who sacrificed to save others, and pray such a catastrophic event never happens again. Tell us your story: On the morning of September 11,2001, I was dropping my kids off at school when the school secretary told everyone in the office that a plane hit the twin towers. I thought surely it was a horrible accident. I was saddened for a few minutes thinking to myself that several people must be hurt...or possibly dead. I got in my car and went back home. My raidio was not on , so I heard nothing else about it until a friend of mine called and said "are you watching this?". I didn't know what he meant. He told me the channel to turn to (which at the time was just about any one on the air)and he began to tell me the story when the second plane hit. I said "WOW, what movie is this? What great special effects!!!" He yelled at me "This is real!!!" I could not believe what I was seeing. Then the report of the Pentagon being hit came over the news.I didn't know how to feel. I felt so guilty over the next few days because I just wasn't as emotional about it as the rest of the country seemed to be. Living in Houston and watching this happen in New York on television really made it seem like another country or like it just wasn't real. A few weeks later I started seeing people on T.V. talking about people they lost, showing pictures of firefighters, husbands and wives, police officers and so many other innocent people that lost their lives. The feeling of unity among people I had never met before but walked past every day ,was overwhelming. I have always believed that everything happens for a reason, no matter how terrible they seem at the time, we have to look for the greater message. This country showed the whole world what it takes to exist in a country full of diversity. We rush around living our lives everyday without looking up to see what is right in front of us...WoW!!What a wake up call!! Look at all the good people around us!!!We have learned a huge lesson!! So, I was home on that most horrific of all days. My fianc?, who works evenings, was downstairs watching the Today Show. Suddenly, I was interrupted from my chores by his screaming that a plane had just crashed into one of the World Trade Center towers. I ran downstairs and the two of us were standing about a foot from the television. We witnessed, live on television, the second plane hitting the other tower. Mark, a Marine Corps veteran, looked at me and said, "we've just been attacked". We sat there, watching the coverage and all I could say was, "what about all those people?" I could not imagine such horror and that was before the attack on the Pentagon, before flight 93 was heroically brought down in Shanksville, PA., and before the Twin Towers collapsed. I knew then that our world was forever changed. After watching the TV coverage (and crying) for awhile, I called my mother. I then learned that one of my brothers flew out of Boston around 8:00 A.M. that morning. It would be a few agonizing hours before we knew he was alright. Greg's flight was forced to land in Peoria, IL. Returning to Ohio proved to be quite a task for him. He told me that he says a prayer before each flight but that on 9/11, his prayer was, for reasons unknown to him at the time, a psalm. He also said he didn't think he ever knew that psalm by heart. Later, my family would worry some more. My brother, Chris, is a captain in the U.S. Navy and could have been at the Pentagon that day as he is currently working in Washington D.C. I feel truly blessed that both my brothers are alive and well! My heart still aches for all those people who lost loved ones on that awful day. September 11 is Mark's birthday. He and his twin brother, Mike, also a Marine Corps veteran, will never again celebrate their birthdays in the ways they have in years past. Mark had waited until the last minute to re-new his driver's license. While we were at the license bureau, I went outside to call my mom again to see if she had heard anything about my brothers. I kept seeing planes above and only later realized that it was because nationwide, pilots in the sky were ordered to land at the nearest, available airport and we are very close to the Akron/Canton Airport. I learned later that it was only about five planes which were forced to land at Akron/Canton Airport, but at the time, it seemed like a lot more. I cannot imagine what it must be like for those in New York, Washington, Pennsylvania and for the loved ones of all those aboard the fated flights, to hear the roar of an airplane overhead. An airplane flying in a clear blue sky will forever bring on the same flood of emotions, for the skies here that day were just as blue. Even a clear blue sky, in and of itself, now takes on new meaning for me. For days after the attack, I felt incredible grief, anger and even guilt. I questioned God even as I prayed for the souls lost, prayed that survivors be found, and prayed for an end to hatred and evil, especially of this magnitude. I have a brilliant sixteen-year old daughter and I wish she did not have to live in a world where such evil is possible. In the days following our worst moments, for the most part, we saw the very best of humanity, the very best of America. We also saw that some people will try to profit from even the most evil of deeds. Right here, in N. Canton, OH., a man lied, saying he lost a loved one in NYC. He was caught and hopefully, the countless donations he received from generous co-workers were re-paid. We are still the greatest nation in the world. So, I was home on that most horrific of all days. My fiance, who works evenings was downstairs watching the Today Show. We know of world tragedies, as we have lost family in the Holacaust during WW11. We observe a Holacaust Rememberance Day each year on our calandar. To hear the news about the Twin Towers' explosions felt like another overwhelming major disaster of our lifetime, that also struck us so very deeply. Living in Florida, we do not know too many people, except for family in the New York area. Fortunately,we did not really know anyone that worked in the Towers, but did hear stories from friends and neighbors that did have family or friends that perished there! I was very touched by the presentation on the Today Show this morning that commemerated the series of events that led to the deaths of almost three thousand people! Oprah also shared accounts of many families today and how they were coping with life, one year later. It was assuring to hear about the appropriations that will be given to the surviving families in the near future. These monentary compensations will be a small token of consellation for those who have suffered horrendous loses. My friend Katie and I had just got out of gym and were trying to hurry up and get dressed for our 4'th hr. We were late as usual and trying to hurry to class. We went by the locker room office and saw on the TV that some planes had hit the Twin Towers. I just figured it was something that had already happened and that it was just a documentary not knowing that it was happening right now. I asked one of the girls in the room what they were watching and they told me that someone had hijacked two planes and crashed them into the twin towers. They told me that they were American planes. My first thought was "Oh my god Angie." See my cousin Angie is a sturdiest for Spirit Airlines and I was so scared that she had been on one of the planes. As we left all throughout the commons the TVs were turned onto the news. In every classroom we did nothing but listen to the news. My life had been so sheltered living in a town so small. Important things in history had happened before but nothing had ever affected me like what had happened on that cool day in September. I woke up just like any other day and I got ready for work. My mom needed the car so she dropped me off. As I did every morning I was hearing the radio, not expecting to hear anything different today. When I got off the car everything was normal, but that changed when I walked in the office. I was the first one there, so I did what I usually did. I turned on the lights, checked the fax, you know normal office things. I sat down at my desk and turned on my radio. And that's when I heard the words that would change my life forever. "A plane has crashed into the World Trade Center." "Yeah right", were the only words I could say. How could the radio people joke about something like that? But they sounded so serious and scared, terrified even. But how could that be true? How could a plane crash into the WTC? So I went and turned on the tv, and then I saw it with my own two eyes, as the second plane hit the second tower. And as I sat alone and watched that I cried. I cried for the people on the planes. I cried for the people in the buildings. And later when the towers collapsed I cried for the people who died and I cried for the people who had lost somebody. I cried for my unborn son and I cried for me. I cried for New York City and the U.S.A. But most of all I cried because the little happy world that I thought existed came tumbling down. My world, the place where there was a place for everybody was destroyed on that fateful day. I couldn't understand how someone can have so much hate and anger at something and hurt all these innocent people. But I understand now, because the hate and anger that those people felt toward us is the same way I feel towards them now. But I know that hate is not the answer, being united is. But it saddens me to know that something like this had to happen to make us put aside our petty differences and unite as a nation. We should have been united from the start. But regardless now we are united and together we shall overcome this tragedy and once again be triumphant. Tell us your story: When i first heard about what happened it was the end of my drill team's morning rehersal, about 9:30 in the morning at circle (a tradition we do every day after practice where we make announcements and give each other compliments) our director, mrs loomis told us she had very important news. she told us that a plane had crashed in to one of the towers of the world trade center. at first we were all really surprised and at first and none of us really knew what to say, then as we were getting dressed for school in the locker room we had the radio on listening to the news and the updates, all day we kept hearing more reports about what happened and we were really worried about whether there was goign to be any more attacks, since we live in the capital of texas some people were afraid they'd try to blow up the capital down town. all in all it was a very surprising day, and not in a good way. I was getting my hair cut in an apartment when the second one hit. I didn't see it either. The woman cutting my hair got a phone call about 10 minutes after 9am. She kept saying, "You're kidding. No f***ing way." She turned on the television and we watched for the first time the footage of what was happening a little to the west and a little to the south of where we were. We watched the towers fall. We watched the Pentagon footage. We heard about the crash in Pennsylvania. I couldn't think or feel. I was shell shocked. We went to the roof of her building and watched the smoke slowly start to envelop the city. She took pictures of it to document history. I kept turning and staring at the Empire State building wondering if it was next, or what would be. We had heard there were four more planes still in the sky. I walked home to my apartment which is four blocks from the Empire State building, seven blocks from Grand Central Station, about eight blocks from the UN, and on top of the Queens Midtown Tunnel and I was afraid. People walked by me who were covered in World Trade Center debris and I wanted to reach out and touch them, just to see if this was all really happening. I tried to call anyone I could think of who might possibly be near what was now Ground Zero. I tried to call my family to let them know I was okay, physically. I had one of the only working cell phones and I could still only make one call out of one hundred dialed. Friends were emailing and calling from across the country, they were afraid. I spent two hours sitting by myself watching the coverage on television just crying. I sat outside my building smoking stale cigarettes, talking to neighbors. We still thought there were four planes in the sky. I couldn't even think about it. I was resigned that I might be involved in the scariest thing I could ever imagine. No, I couldn't imagine it. It is unfathomable to me that a victory can be achieved by a staggering civilian death toll. Then nothing else happened. We had to close our windows because the smoke was starting to blow uptown. The next day, 9/12, the streets in Manhattan were deserted. I walked in the middle of Avenues because it was a novelty but it only made me sadder. That night there was a bomb scare in the Empire State Building. They started to evacuate my neighborhood, but they never got to my building. I didn't wait. I packed an overnight bag and walked fifty blocks uptown to my friends apartment which was not near any terrorists targets that I could identify. Her parents came and got us and took us to New Jersey. It felt so removed. It was so nice. But I still felt like someone had jumbled up my insides and didn't put everything back where it belonged. I felt off, not myself, not like anything I had ever felt before. On 9/12 I had to go back to work. I ran an educational center for children and I had to go and be strong for them. It wasn't easy. It's still not. Yesterday was the one year anniversary. I went to a morning prayer/moment of silence in Washington Square Park. I posted a message on the Union Square Town Hall board they had. I never cried, but it was so sad. And I was fortunate to have not known anyone who was killed.
