I thought my co-workers were joking. Who could imagine The United States bing under attack in this day and age?? Shortly after that I turned on the television in my office and watched as the second Tower was attacked and The Pentagon. I was in complete shock. I have no family that was directly affected, but several friends that lost family members and close friends. I felt so lost and saddened that this atrocity happened. I can only offer my moral and emotional support to all of those who lost family and/or friends. I, however, am still spiritually saddened and hurt that this attack did happen. America will recover and remember those lost with affection and awe at the heroism involved in saving as many as possible. WE WILL NEVER FORGET, AND BETTER YET BECOME A STRONGER NATION BECAUSE OF IT. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The terrorist attacks occured on a Tuesday which was one of the days of the week where I was able to sleep in. My roommates and I were all sleeping when suddenly my neighbor came running into the room saying "turn on the news, shits getting fucked up!!" I apologize about the bad language. I completely ignored him because what he said sounded so untrue and made up. My neighbor then turned on the TV. I was still half asleep, but I managed to hear something about a plane being flown into the world trade center. Once I heard that, I jumped out of my bed and began watching the news. I had no clue on what was going on. My neighbor told me that two planes were flown into each of the world trade center twin towers and another into the Pentagon. The news then explained it was a terrorist attack. I couldn't believe my ears. As we continued to watch the news with live shots of the world trade center, I watched the two towers crumble to pieces. As I watched that happen, a feeling of sadness and anger came over me. I knew there were still people in the towers as they fell and kept wondering why anyone would ever do this to us or to anyone else. Why would people do this to one another? The whole situation sickened me. However, I do know that justice will be served. It's only a matter of time before that happens. Tell us your story: i was at home listening to the radio getting ready for work, when it was interrupted with the news flash.. the first thing i thought of - was my 23 year old cousin, Matthew Carmen Sellitto who worked on the 105th floor for Cantor Fitzgerald. He has just received a promotion. He is my first cousin and my brother because i am an only child. he is my fathers godson and his brothers kid. My legs could not move fast enough to the kitchen where i could turn on the closest t.v. i then saw tower 1 on fire, i started to scream to my mother upstairs - mom, mom,,, the t.v. Matthew - i couldn't make full sentences... we watched together ..i called there to try and reach him at work... but the lines were busy. my father was at work... we called him as we did that - he was in a meeting - i sat and watched with the hopes he was in the other tower - as i thought that - the other plane slammed into tower 2. after that i felt as if my whole heart dropped out of me - i started to get enraged with anger and fear - saying where are they coming from why - those people? how??? my name is Danya Sellitto I am 26 years old and the rest of the day we spent at my uncle Matt & aunt lori's house in Harding, NJ. Where my uncle stated that at 8:57 am Matthew called home and said they were going to try and make it out, but if they couldn't he loved everyone , very much. you could hear the fear in his voice - part of his conversation was caught on the answering machine. I can not express enough to all those families - that the hurt can not be described. i miss my Matthew so much - he was the coolest, smartest and funniest young man you would love to meet. He really was handsome, our family is so tight - outsiders call the sellitto family -the brady bunch gang. Tell us your story: On the morning of September 11, 2001 I remember sitting in calculus class in the classroom C-2 when the principal, Mr. Kemeza, came on the intercom and announced that terrorists had attacked America. Throughout the rest of the day at school I remember thinking and feeling very many things. The first was great sorrow for those who had been hurt or killed in the attacks that had happened. As the day went on I heard more information and a few rumors. I began to wonder whether the terrorists were still attacking places and if Boston would be a target. I became nervous because if the terrorists picked a site in Massachusetts it probably would have been Boston where I attend school or Plymouth, where my family and a nuclear power plant reside. Not far from out school is a large gas tank which, I remember my chemistry teacher telling our class the year before, if it was struck and exploded would probably wipe out BC High. I remember feeling nervous about impeding attacks wondering where my dad was because he works in Boston and where the rest of my family was. One other feeling that I remember from that day was anger. Anger that someone would do this to America to innocent people in the world trade center, the pentagon, the people on the planes and their families. Amidst the fear and sadness I took time to think about the people who had done this and how the US should find them and punish them. I always have my radio on when all of a sudden they said a plane has just crashed into one of the world trade center buildings. i jumped up and ran to the back of the building because you can see the entire skyline of New York city. To my disbelief their was the building on fire with smoke filing up thru the air. As my co-workers looked in disbelief we saw the other plane fly right into the other tower as it exploded we screamed with horror saying "oh my god it this really happening, our mangers and dept heads were telling everyone to sit down and calm down. How can you tell someone to sit down after seeing something like that, this was not a movie we were watching, this was our country, our town being destroyed right before our eyes. As we still watched and listened to the radio for updates, we starred in horror as the 1st tower crumpled to the ground, shocked, angry, sad & horrified we just looked at each other and cryed. so many people just going about there day, some not even knowing what was happening. I'm 36 yrs old and never thought i'd see something so horrible in my lifetime, those people jumping trying to get away from the flames or people trapped above where the planes hit it's unimaginable. Tell us your story: My little sister and I were in our apartment that morning,about three months after we moved from the U.S.A, doing nothing in particular. Then my mom (who was in my grandma's apartment a few streets away) franticly called us saying something about airplane and buildings. We turned on the T.V but we didn't really understand what was happening until my mom came home, crying, shaking and eating a million bars of chocolate. I quickly called my best friend who was in Washington. It took forever to get through. She doesn't have a T.V and didn't even know what was happening before I told her. She didn't believe me. It was absolutely horrible watching the mothers, fathers, children, wives and husbands crying on live T.V for their missing loved ones. I will NEVER forget the sight of the people jumping out of the buildings. It was horrible. I had never seen something so DISGUSTING AND REPULSIVE as the Afganistans celebrating and cheering at the loss of so many Americans. The phone rang about 9 am. It was my niece, who lives nearby. She told me about the planes crashing into the World Trade Center. I couldn't believe it. I turned the television on and that is where I sat for days. I kept calling my sister and husband (whom were both at work), trying to keep them updated on the situation. All I could do was cry. I felt completely helpless and awful. They had cancelled classes that day and the next, which was a relief and I didn't have to work till the weekend. I remember sitting there thinking to myself, how awful, who did this? Why did they do this? and What does it mean? Well I came to realize it meant war. Then I suddenly became more aware that my other sister (from Texas) was in the army and I knew what it meant for her. I tried calling her most of the day but it just kept saying "All circuits are busy now, please try again later". Finally about 630 pm that night she called me, crying, as was I. She knew as well what it meant for her. She left this past March for Landstuhl Germany. She is a nurse in the army and is taking care of our wounded soldiers. Unfortunately she won't be home till March 2004. MY brithday is September 14th, needless to say that birthday in 2001 was one I will never forget. Moments that fundamentally change our society as a whole, and more significantly, each of us as individuals. Pearl Harbor. Kennedy's assasination. "One small step" on the moon. The Challenger explosion. And now, September 11th. I find it hard to recall specific memories of that day. Instead I have a collection of vivid images; a mental collage leading up to two months when, for me, the world truly stood still. ....watching live as the second plane was swallowed by the second tower in a burst of flame....the clouds of ash billowing as the towers collapsed....the gaping hole in the pentagon....the wreckage of a plane in a lonely Pennsylvania field. It all took on such a surrealistic quality - these weren't the events of real life, but of Hollywood movies. Reality simply couldn't have any bearing on what Dan Rather and the other media voices of our generation were showing us on television. After all, how does one wrap their mind around 3,000 lives being lost in one fell swoop? If we add up every person we've ever known, its probably not half of that. 3,000? How does one fathom the knowledge of that many lives extinguished in an instant: the suddenly parentless children, the husbands and wives widowed, the childless parents? How does one count the tears? Everywhere you went, any direction you looked, you found fear, uncertainty, confusion. Strangers gathered in stores, gas stations, on the street. Not only to talk, but to feel the comfort of human companionship. Phones lines were overwhelmed. We called our friends, our families. Even those nowhere near New York - simply to make sure they were safe. I watched a nation go through the grieving process that first day and night. The shock, the pain, the tears, the anger. Noone I knew died in the tragedy, or was directly affected. But like everyone else I grieved as well. That evening, like everyone else, I ran to the gas pumps. Waiting in line that stretched for blocks. I stood beside my car, my wife at my side, our children in our arms, and listened on the radio as the president addressed a nation buried in fear. Every radio in every car was turned up, and his voice seemed to pour from the heavens. For the first time in my life, the world truly stood still. An elderly couple in the car next to us held tightly to each other. Behind us, a yound black couple stood together, hand in hand. A group of teenagers, a medley of piercings and hair colors, stood silent as well. People from all walks of life, converged upon a random place, united, silently clinging to one another as the world seemingly came apart around us. Age, race, and social status had finally become obsolete, albeit briefly. In a world based on 'hustle and bustle', something had finally happened drastic enough that even the very hands of time were forced to stop and take notice. September 12th arrived, and just as it had each morning since the dawn of time, the sun came up. 'The day after' had begun. People started to realize that the world was not ending, and that life must go on. Our president, shedding his cloak of controversy, became the leader he had to be,and told us to go about our lives as usual, that life must continue. And I, like most others, listened. I went to work. Driving through a major city, I witnessed something that, for the second time in as many days, caused my world to briefly stand still. Driving through this, and average midwestern city, I saw, each time I glanced up as I passed under an overpass, American flags. Waved by children, their parents, their grandparents. Friends and strangers at the same time, as we all had become. I stuck my arm out the window, two fingers pointed toward the sky in that universal gesture of greeting, unity , and peace. I listened as a radio announcer reported that in New York, there was NO crime. No looting. I heard as people called in, simply to send messages of love, unity, and patriotism to those around them. People I passed on the street no longer tried to avoid eye contact. They said hello, as did I. I shook hands with strangers. An old woman hugged me. We, as a people, were overwhelmed not only with patriotism, but with the love and caring that only comes from shared fear and loss. Halfway through my morning, I realized this wasnt a day for work. On the way home, the reality of events finally touched home for me. A nation lost its innocence on September 11th. America as a country was no longer invincible; but vulnerable. Never had an enemy dared to cross into our sacred borders - the thought that they could was a blow to the sense of safety and well being of every one of us. No longer were wars a thing we saw on television from half a planet away. They had come into our very front yard. Exposed to the most heinous evil most of us have ever witnessed, we, a nation seemingly predicated on violence and mistrust, responded by coming together. We as a people reached out, and for once in our history, we responded. I learned several things from 9-11. I learned that a hero isn't a visible politician, athlete, or actor. A hero is someone who gives their life for strangers. I learned that while our world seems most of the time to be a cold and lonely place, it truly isn't. Our world has a heart, and it beats deeply in us all. The true tragedy is that is takes something as devastating as this to bring it out......... And when i got to my school all my friends asked me did you hear what happened, and i was no what happened. And my friends were saying that a plane hit the World Trade Center in NY. I couldnt believe it. I remember my first period teacher talking about a terrorist attack. But i still couldnt believe it or realize the full effects of what just happened. In my photo class which is 2nd period we watched it the whole period. And then i saw the 2nd plane hit. I was so shocked. I finally realized this is scary. I was at work when everything occured and we don't have a radio or television access in my office. Everyone where I work was wandering around, asking everyone else if they knew what was going on. On the way home from work, I listened to the radio, trying to see what was going on, and what had actually happened. But I really didn't get the full picture until I atually saw it on TV when I got home. I sat there, glued to the screen, with my mouth hanging open, unbelieveing. Later that day, a friend and I went to town to get some gas because we heard gas prices were going to be shooting way up. The gas stations, the stores, everything everywhere was pakced with people who were preparing for a full-on war. I remember one time in particular, standing in the Wal-Mart parking lot and gazing around at the sky. There was something different in the air that day, something that you could almost see. The sky looked blank somehow, and full of life at the same time. Was it the spirits of those who had died in the plane crashes and on the ground? Was it God watching over us, and the fact that we could really feel it that day? The sky itself was too quiet with all the flights grounded. People were riding around with "NUKE 'EM ALL" written in shoe polish on the windows of their vehicles and red, white, and blue was everywhere, in every form you could think of. Someone came up to me as I wondered the school halls before class and told me that the Whitehouse had been bombed. I thought for sure they were mistaken, and obviously they were. Still though, I hadn't heard the news. I noticed the students crowded around the TV the moment I stepped into my first period class. It was 9:00. I was in shock. I didn't really know what to feel at first, it almost didn't seem real. Needless to say we didn't get much work done in that class. However, the administration made the decision to not allow the students to watch the news for the rest of the day. Some of the more obedient teachers followed those instructions, and some of the smarter teachers ignored them. It was a very interesting day all around, one I'm sure I'll never forget. Tell us your story: I woke up on September 11th, got dressed in my athletic because our soccer team was working out in the weight room that morning at 9 a.m. It was a Tuesday so our maid was cleaning our house, and everything was quite hectic even before the terror attacks started. I came downstairs and found my mom and my maid watching the news and the burning World Trade Center, and I remember asking "Is this a big deal?" I just thought it was some bizarre freak accident and I did not think much of it. I rode to school listening to the news with my mom, and right when I was getting out of the car, a news bulletin reported that the Pentagon was on fire. I walked into the locker room to complete getting ready for our workout, and as I sat down with some of my teammates, we all shared what we knew, but it was mostly confusion and none of us really knew what was happening. While we were in the weight room, a school administrator came over the PA system and told all teachers to turn off all the TV's and the only thing they could play was the radio. I showered and went on to second period, then to World History where my teacher Mrs. Franzen updated us, and told us that both World Trade Center towers had fallen, the Pentagon was struck by a plane, and a plane had gone down outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvaniya. When she told us that all planes had been grounded over the U.S., I remembered that my Dad was in California, and was supposed to fly back on September 11th. (He ended up driving back to Texas with his boss instead of flying). In lunch and in Journalism class, our teacher let us watch TV even though she was not supposed to. Later in the day during IPC, we were in the computer lab and our teacher gave us the day off and let us look on the internet about what was going on around the country. I came home that day and all day and night watched the news, and called family to make sure everyone was o.k. My friend Ricky's cousin, who is a stockbroker in NYC had a close call, he was supposed to have a meeting in the World Trade Center but was sick, so he couldnt go. That night I remember watching the news for a long time. So that was my September 11 story, a day we will never forget. We had been taking notes off the power point. He turned off the powerpoint and turned the t.v. on to the news and we saw the second plane hit. It was horrible, next thing I know kids are being called out of class to go home and my classes are nearly empty. I called my mom and she said to stay in school that I was safer there than any other place. So I remained at school and left at the normal time. When I got home, I turned the t.v. on and watched the news all night and for many days after. I feel touched that people that had no idea what was goign on risked there lives to run into the towers and help people out. Tell us your story: On September 11th I drove to work (I was working as a counselor in a homeless shelter) in Alexandria, VA around 8:30am with a CD on in the car so I did not hear any local news. When I got to work to check email and voice mail, I became confused. My boyfriend emailed me that (Howard) Stern was talking about a plane hitting the WTC and my sister (in MI) was hysterical on my voice mail saying we were being attacked and she was watching it unfold on the TODAY Show. She is very emotional (like I) and overreacts and I had to see my clients so I figured I'd get back to it later. I am from New York though and the weirder the messages that came in on online news sites and all the more I wanted to know what was going on. I went next door to the large client TV and as I saw the WTC towers on fire it switched to the Pentagon. A client walked in and said "Oh is that what I heard" ANother client said she needed to meet with me NOW. When I asked her to wait since I wanted to find out what was going on. She said to me "But that has been on all morning and I am moving out" It was really hard for me to stay nonjudgemental in counselor fashion that day. My first client was from NY so we did do some processing of the event or what we knew so far. THe whole day was surreal. I figured that I lived closer to the Pentagon than I worked so I stayed and tried to work and in between trying watched it all unfold on TV. My family in NY finally got through to me. But it took days to locate all family and friends that lived or worked in NYC. Everyone I knew was fine, but there were many close calls. I felt blessed but hurt with the rest of the nation. I couldn't volunteer to use my counseling skills since I have not finished my counselor licensure. SHortly after though, I was offered a job with the Community Resilience Project, A FEMA funded 9-11 crisis counseling program. I am nervous about the upcoming anniversary. I still get upset, am hypervigilant, nervous when flying, and felt that sick feeling I felt on 9-11 when something triggers me such as the weather. I think it was around 9:22 am when my teacher anounced this awful tragedy. The whole school was shocked, it was unbelivable. My School's Name was Alan B. Shepard High School. I was on that time studying at the university and working on a NGO in Peru, my country. So my schedule were not very rigid. I wook up at 5.40 am on September 11th 2001, that day. I could not sleep at all so I turned the TV on. At that time, the daily news TV programms start in Peru. This day main issue was an strike of public transport service in Lima, so I decided to go to the bed again. It wasn't that important. Three hours later I turned the TV on, again, and what I saw was so shocking. It was an airplane crashing the WTC, live and direct. I can remember the words of the local reporter about it. He said that it was a world-scale tragedy. He barely talked when the second plane crashed. I was confused, I could not understand it because a couple of hours ago the most important event in daily TV programs of Lima was the strike and not terrorist attacks in NYC or DC. Ten minutes after the second attack, I left my bedroom and went to my parents'. My mother was still sleeping. I woke her up and told to watch the TV, that US was attacked. Then I took the cell phone and called my dad's bedroom at the hospital. I told him to watch the TV. He told me he was watching it since the very initial images the international TV programms were shown. "Ok -I told him-. See you later". I hung up and the silence in my department was tremendous. My mother did not say anything, just kept watching the TV, so do I. Each one in our bedrooms. The images I saw that day will never be forgotten. Neither the silence.
