Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My story is not unusual. I was driving southbound on I-95 on my way to a job interview in Sanford, Maine. I hardly ever turn my car radio on, but that morning something compelled me to. I turned on the radio just after the first plane hit. At that point they weren't sure if it was an accident or not. When the second plane hit, a chill ran up my spine. I instantly knew that we were victims of terrorism. I could not help becoming emotional and shedding tears on my way to the interview thinking about the innocent people in the planes and the towers. I am not a religious person, but that night I actually got on my knees in my apartment and prayed for the victims and their families, and all of America. I ended up getting the job I was interviewing for that day, but I just did not feel like celebrating. I could not bring myself to. The thing that amazes me the most is that I will never forget exactly where I was the moment I heard the news. I will never, ever forget what happened that day and I will remember the victims of 9-11 for the rest of my life. Tell us your story: I had dropped my kids off at child day care center at Fort Hamilton and decided to drive fearing that I would be late for work. Everything was going as usual (traffic by the toll before entering the tunnel in Brooklyn). I had gone through the tunnel and was stopped at the light before the bridge that connected the finanial center when I heard an explosion and something hit the top of the car. I looked up and saw a smoke cloud on top of the first tower. In a panic, everyone waiting on that light tried to go reverse into the side street. I had made it to a street right behind the towers where I was trying to use my cell phone to call my boss. My phone didn't work so I had to get out of my vehicle to use a public phone. I had informed my boss that there was an explosion at the top of one of the World Trade center towers. I thought that it was a terrorist act because of the bomb explosion a few years back. When I got back in the car, the news broadcaster informed that it was a small plane so I just assumed that it was really an accident because prior to that week there were accidents involving small planes. I was waiting on the light right behind the second tower when the second plane hit and I saw the building light up right in front of me from bottom to the top and I paniced and tried to make an immediate right. I panicked because i didn't want to hit any of the pedestrians running away from the explosion. I made it as far as the south street seaport when I saw people running towards me and I heard noises like shots being fired and at this time I knew that it was a terrorist act because I had heard on the radio what was going on with the hijacking of the planes and about the plane diving into the pentagon. I started to scream out "Oh my God! they are coming after us to kill us with guns" and at that point I started to cry because the sounds from the building crumbling sounded like gun shots. Then the police came and ordered everyone out of their vehicles and directed us to go towards the waters. That's when the towers started to collapse and I saw people coming out the debris it was like a dream because all you saw was smoke from the debris and people coming out of nowhere. Some people were bloody and full of soot but they were walking as fast as they could. I saw three young ladies that attended either a high school or Middle school across the street from the towers and they looked really desperate. One was having problems with her asthma so I picked them up and I drove until we could get to the upperside of manhattan. I tell you that day I will never forget how one couldn't breathe because the debris made the air so thick. I was lucky to have been in my vehicle and if it wasn't for God I would have been one of the victims. It was only God that I didn't hit anyone in the street trying to get away from the explosion. I just felt so helpless that day like now when I think about it, I wish that I had taken some people in the car with me but in a panic I wasn't thinking about anything but getting out of there. This is the end of an era of American security, of unconditional American freedom. Images and sounds bombard us and there is no escape. We close our eyes, and still we see the towers flaming, smoking, falling. We cover our ears, and still we hear the sounds of people screaming, of gargantuan monoliths dissolving before us. We stand as a nation, silent, and still. Some of us are weeping, and some of us are stoic. All of us feel the same basic emotions. We are scared, we are angry, we are sad. We stand as a nation, resilient and strong. These attacks have been meant to break our spirit, to drop us to our knees. They didn?t. We cried, we mourned, we acted. Acts of war have been brought against our people and our nation. None of us have ever seen such destruction, such pain, such chaos before. Most of the world has joined us in our mourning and our pain. A few rejoice, and we see them do so on TV. We make note. We know we will be vindicated. And then.... We continue with our day. Classes are cancelled and stores are closed, so we spend the day with loved ones, trying to cope with such pain and fear. We tell the story over and over again, as if constant reiteration of it will prevent any more attacks. We stand as a nation, resilient and strong, and at the same time anxious and worried. We never asked for this war, but it has been brought to us, here and now. We stand as a nation, certain of our victory, but wary of the cost. We don?t want to see people die, we don?t want to lose our sons and daughters, our brothers and sisters, our mothers and fathers, but we will. That is almost certain. We stand as a nation, tense and ready, preparing for war. These savage and brutal attacks did not break our spirit. They did not stem our pride, nor did they weaken our nation. To the contrary, these attacks reinforced our spirit, they strengthened our pride, and they brought our nation together. And with that, we stand as a nation, resilient and strong, and we wait. We will bide our time, gather ourselves, and we set out to bring whoever perpetrated these attacks to justice. And then... I disconnect from the billion node interconnected patriotic matrix that America has become. I look around me. I see thousands of American flags that weren't there two days ago. I see gas guzzling SUVs running on Middle Eastern oil sporting American flags. And I reflect on what could make a people hate us so much. Some will say they're jealous, some will say they're religious fanatics. No one wants to admit that it's our lifestyles. No one wants to think about how we, one country amongst 180 others, use over half the world's oil, and produce half the world's waste. That oil fuels our lifestyles, powers our SUVs and B-2 Bombers. We then use those B-2 Bombers to protect the intrests of our SUVs. And I come to understand that that is one of the reasons a people could hate us so much. As I realize this, I still burn with anger and rage over what they have enacted upon us. I know that they'll pay in kind, and I'm left with an old adage that my father use to tell me constantly as I battled through school. "Two wrongs don't make a right" he'd always say. I'm left to stand here, pondering the tides of change that could potentially sweep this country, mourning the people lost, and trying to understand the world. I remember waking up like normal and going downstairs to eat breakfast when the phone rang. No one calls at seven in the morning. I answered and I remember my aunt telling me to have my parents turn on the news. Of course I wanted to see what was going on. I saw what was on and I thought that it was a movie, so I turned the channel and saw it again. I asked my parents what was going on and they told me. I was late to school that day. Tell us your story: I was in my 8am government class in high school when my guidance counsellor, Ms. Burke, came into the classroom and announced that "a plane flew into the World Trade Center". None of us were really sure what to think of it, and since that was all the information we were given, we had no idea about the severity of the attack. Just a few days earlier, someone had flown a very small plane into a building (not as a terrorist thing or to cause harm to others) and my classmates and I began to assume this was something of that nature. Class continued, and throughout the day more and more people became worried. We were not allowed to listen to radios, watch TV, or leave school. By the time lunch was over and I headed to my chorus class, some people were in tears for fear that their loved ones attending NYU or visiting the city were hurt. I didn't really understand why they were so upset. I didn't understand the situation at all. We weren't told that more than one plane was involved, we weren't told that the towers had fallen, we weren't told about the incidents in PA or DC, and we weren't told that it was a deliberate act of terrorism. I arrived home around 3pm and turned on the news. I was absolutely shocked. All of the stations were replaying clips of the second plane hitting (the clip of the first plane hadn't been released yet), both towers falling, and the destruction at the Pentagon. Over and over I watched people jumping from a hundred stories off the ground, and grown men and women weeping on the streets feeling helpless and lost. Suddenly and with pangs of guilt I realized why so many people had been upset at my school. They knew. They knew everything and I knew nothing. So instead of receiving reports throughout the day at planes crashed and towers fell, it came to me all at once through pictures and visibly upset newscasters trying to keep up their stoic facades while reporting the deaths of thousands of husbands, wives, parents, children, siblings, and friends. I didn't know anyone in NYC or DC, and even though the planes came out of our nearest airport, Logan, I didn't know anyone travelling at the time. I didn't have one person to focus on. They were all strangers to me. But that didn't make it any easier. As I watched the news through the evening, I began to imagine what it must have been like for the people in the second tower who did not have time or did not think to evacuate. I imagined what it must have been like to see a plane headed straight for the building you were working in. Or to be on the top floor, unable to get out and knowing that you were going to die. I couldn't handle those thoughts, but I kept watching the news and all that footage, even though I spent much of the night crying too hard to be able to see. The next day at school we talked exclusively about the attacks of the previous morning, and it was cathartic to see my classmates just as upset and angry as I was. Our teachers described these events as "definitive moments in history". "Your children," they said, "will ask you where you were when it happened, and will have no knowledge of a pre-9/11 world." With in seconds my roommate?s radio alarm turned on to the reports of an airplane crashing into the World Trade Center. In a half a sleep haze my roommate and I passed the news off as a morning prank by the 98.9 morning show. As the report went on I quietly asked my roommate, "Ed, are you listening to this?" He responded, "Yeah, I think this is for real!" Without cable I ran down the hall half-dressed for class and still somewhat asleep. At the moment that I walked into my friends room a second plane hit the other World Trade Center tower. From that moment we knew it wasn't an accident. I finished getting ready for class that morning listening to the radio the entire time. Just as I was leaving for my first class I heard about the plane hitting the Pentagon. On my way to class there was this sickening sound of silent cries. People were talking about the events of the morning, about their family at the different crash sites, their friends that worked in the World Trade Center; yet, under all the discussion there was silence. On my walk up the Benedictine Hill I realized that there was no I way I could sit through my Mass Communications class. With permission I left the classroom and returned to my dorm. Phone calls started to come in, my distant Uncle who worked in the Pentagon was "on special assignment" and we wouldn't find out if he survived the attacks for some time. My father was evacuated out of his offices at the Oil Trade Facility in Houston, TX. Every where I went that day I ran into friends who weren't so lucky. That evening I raised an American Flag in the window of our newly renovated dorm room. The Flag would remain in the window for the remainder of the year; it served as a constant reminder of the freedom that we enjoy and that so many have died for. Tell us your story: i was in the process of getting my children ready and off to school. i saw what was happening on good morning America and my heart sank with such grief that i felt sick. i prayed for the families for what they were going through and what they were to face in the days and months, even tears to come. i knew what i was feling yet i also knew i couln never fully know the pain and suffering that the victims families and friends were dealing with. i soon found myself praying for strangers, praying that their loved ones would be found. i had forgotten and neglected to love my neighbors and treat others as i would want others to treat me. i found my rainbow after this storm and i have been renewed with a sense of love for all and a compassion for people more than i thought possible. i also held on more tightly than ever to my family because i now know and truly realize how preciouse and little our toime together really is. i will never forget the pain and the suffering and i will hold dear in my heart heroism and courage of that dreadfull day. i will not forget all who were lost. though it is impoosible to know all the detail, faces names ect, but all i have to do is look at my family to know. they were all someones mother, son , daughter, father, husband, wife, friend ect. they all had dreams, hopes,love. some may have been artistic, funny, serious, intelligent, quiet, loud ,outgoing, shy and everytyhing inbetween and more. Tell us your story: September 9, 2001 I flew home from San Diego California with my new Marine Fiance who had just graduated from Marine Corps boot camp. What a joyful time, with a new Marine on my arm and a beautiful ring on my finger, I went back to college for the week to show off. Tuesday morning,September 11, I went to my Geology lab at 8:00 in the morning which, strangely enough, let out early that day. As I walked down the hallway of my dormitory, I noted that everyone had their doors open and it sounded like news being reported from every room. I walked into my room, picked up the phone and called my fiance, to see if he had left to come visit me yet. This is the moment I will never forget...his mother answered the phone, obvously upset, and I asked her what was wrong. "Stacey," she said, "you need to turn on your TV, something has happened..." I quickly turned on my TV and fell to the floor as I watched the second plane hit the World Trade Center in front of my eyes. "Where is he?" I asked her immediately concerned about the saftey of my Military Man. She told me he was safe, and that he already talked to his command to find out what he should do. I was still scared to death. He did end up coming to my school that day, and I will never forget running down the hallway to meet him, and hugging him so tight with that fear of not knowing what was going to happen him. For many Americans the world had stoped turning this day, or this is how I remembered it. It was a normal morning as I began to get ready. I was to play in the Hardin-Simmons University Concert Band for our presidential inauguration. As I was heading out the dormitory to arrive early for a practice I found it strange that there were a swarm of girls in our lobby watching the news. Everything was dead silent. As I stopped to watch I remember seeing one building engulfed with flames. Hearing that a plane had crashed into it I thought it at first to be an accident. As soon as the thought registered into my mine a second plane hit the second tower. I managed to stay to see one of the towers collapse. This is when I realized that this was definitely not an accident. I arrived at the University Chapel to hear lots of people talking about what was going on and what the plane crashes meant. As the first speaker came to present a speech it was explained that something dreadful had happened. We had all taken a moment of silence and then we were lead in prayer for the tragedies that had occurred. No one was really sure that day of what was going on. Tell us your story: Even though it has been eight months and some-odd days since September 11th when the World Trade Centers, the Pentagon, and Flight 93 got more than their share of 15 minutes of fame, the minutest details of that fateful day still remain vivid in my memory. A teacher running into the classroom like a scene from a movie abruptly interrupted Global Studies. His face was ashen and all that he could manage to utter was a command to turn on the TV. He spoke these words with a tone of fear that was clearly perceptible by the eccentric contortions of his pallid face and representing that of an apparition. Mrs. Capen, my Global Studies teacher, immediately grabbed the remote control and turned on the television like well-learned reflex. Usually patient and placid, Mrs. Capen could not stay calm and she looked as upset and as confused as I felt. What I saw was horrific. So many people distraught, troubled, and baffled as to what they were supposed to do next, where to go, what was going on. My eyes were astonished as to what they saw unfolding and numerous uncontrollable emotions were welling up inside of me. My emotions were like a bag of M&M's, I ate through them very quickly and every time I reached into my bag of emotions, I pulled a different color for each of my emotions. I felt sadness (blue), anger (red), bewilderment (purple), flabbergasted (yellow), and hatred (orange). The only emotion that I didn't feel was envy because I was certainly not envious of people who could commit such a destructive act of terror, so when I'd had enough M&M's, all that I had left was a few green M&M's at the bottom of the bag. How could this happen? Why did we let this happen? Who could do this? Questions that couldn't be answered ran through my mind the rest of that grim and excruciatingly painful day. The rest of that day was like bad dream to me. It was like I was in the ocean and every time I got close to the shore and close to a partial understanding of what had happened, an enormous wave pushed me back and I was just as puzzled as I had been when Mrs. Capen turned on the TV in second period. As the day progressed I found it increasingly hard to reach the end of the school day so that I could go home and be with my family. As you might expect we didn't have a normal day at school. Thanks to the high-quality technology at my school, there is a television in every classroom. Instead of doing work, we watched the news in every single class, which was fine with me because I am the type of kid who could watch the news all day, everyday. As the news coverage continued, the news became increasingly worse and increasingly disheartening. By the end of the day (it finally came), the World Trade Centers were nothing more than heaps of rubble, the Pentagon had been transformed into part building and part wreckage, and an airplane with a number of 93 was now nothing more than a heap of debris lying on the ground in Pennsylvania, and all of these ruins were reminders of the terrible terrorist attacks that had made history earlier that day. The photographs and live shots of these troubling scenes will forever hold a place in my mind. The most heartbreaking portion of that whole gloomy and dismal day was the count of those who had lost their lives on that tragic day. At the end of the day the total count of the deceased was nowhere near being reached but its numbers were already climbing well into the thousands and was not ceasing to grow. Every single person that I passed in school had their heads hung down in despair and everyone that I passed in the quiet, desolate hallways was grief-stricken and inconsolable. September 11th was undoubtedly one of the most tragic and depressing days of my life. When I got home no one else was at home except for my dog, Doc, who was comfort enough for me at that moment. Despite the fact that I was home alone, it was nice to know that I had a house to be alone in. That night I didn't even get to see my parents because my mom had to work and my dad had to school (he goes to NCCC), so I had to baby-sit my brother and sister. I didn't really know how to deal with my siblings about the horrendous events of the day, so I asked them if they knew what had occurred that day. My brother said, "Yeah, I know what happened. A bunch a dumb people made a lot of kids lose their moms and dads. I'm glad that they didn't come here." Hearing that from my eight-year-old brother made me realize how lucky I am to be blessed with all of the things I have and how much I take them for granted. I have a magnificent family who until September eleventh I don't think I ever truly appreciated, a roof over my head, clothes on my back, food to eat, a superb education, and the list of things I should be grateful for is endless. That night when my mom got home from work, there was an awkward silence and my mom just held out her arms and I gave her a hug and cried on her shoulder. My mom and I don't have a great relationship with one another but that moment brought us closer than ever. I looked up at my mom and she was in tears as well. She told me that I would never know how much she loved me and that she thanked God for me every day. I told her that even though she didn't know it, I loved her more than words could ever express. I gave her a kiss goodnight and went to bed. At the moment I thanked God that I was alive and that I was surrounded by the people who, even though I didn't always show it, I loved more than life itself. It is inevitable that September 11th touched many people's lives and left a considerable impact on all of those touched that was unforgettable. Perhaps I wasn't in Manhattan; Washington, D.C.; or in Pennsylvania on that catastrophic day but I know that along with everyone else in the country, I was certainly feeling the negative effects of the dreadful calamity. I felt as if I had been transported back to my youth because I felt extremely vulnerable and baffled, as I had often experienced in my adolescence. You may be questioning the fact that I am only 14 but I feel that this unbearable incident in our history has required many teenagers to feel as if their age has quickly matured many years. It is my observance that this terrible occurrence has caused many young people to feel more adult and often times they are obligated to act older than they really are. This day, which has forever left its mark on history and on me and can never be washed away. This day can never be forgotten in my mind and someday I will have to retell this painful day to my grandchildren and although this day has done more harm than good, it has everlastingly left me grateful for those things that I am able to call my own. I set her plate down and turned the t.v. on channel 11 (Fox News) when I saw the picture of the burning Trade Center. When I realized what had happened, I couldn't believe it. I immediately called my mother and father and told them to turn on the t.v. because "these fools had driven a plane into the World Trade Center in New York". I'll never forget that they thought I had lost my mind. They couldn't even grasp what I was telling them. I felt so completely sad. My daughter was being her usual happy 3 year old self, but I cried and tried to make things as normal for her as possible. I felt that this monstrous evil had made itself known in the world and no one would ever have a feeling of being totally safe again. I felt that they were all monsters. As the story unfolded and the Twin Towers collapsed, I felt sadness for the people who died and their families. Even living in L.A., the sadness was overwhelming. I felt like I was there. The country, not just N.Y. and Washington was in shock and mourning. I called in and told my job I wouldn't be in and then I drove myself and my daughter over to my parents' house. I felt strength and comfort in being there and sharing this with them. I realized this morning (9/11/02) that this will be one of those days in my life that I will never forget. I will always remember where I was and what I was doing. It's weird because I thought my generation (I'm 33) wouldn't ever have one of those days. Ever. I heard on our local news radio station, WGN, that the first plane had hit, but really didn't think too much of it because I figured it was an accident. I was talking to a fellow co-worker when another co-worker came up to us and said that another plane had hit the other tower. At that point we went into the lunch room to watch the TV. We and several other workers must have watched all the events unfold for another 2 hours. We all sat there in silance. I wanted to cry, but you know, you're at work. The company I worked for is a medical distribution company, so pretty soon all our hospital customers, especially in Chicago, started calling for extra supplies because no one knew what was going to be happening. I couldn't wait to get home that day. And once I did, I proceeded to spend the next 4 days glued to the TV. I'd fall into bed exhausted every night, I didn't want to stop watching in case something else happened. I just couldn't believe this was happening to us!!!! We're the U.S. Stuff like that doesn't happen here. Finally on Saturday I had to quit watching for a while. Luckily TV Land was having a Brady Bunch marathon that weekend. Nothing bad ever happens to the Brady's, so I got to take my mind off of it for a little while. After September 11th, some friends of my cousin decided to make Angels for the families of the victims. Several schools and volunteers in the area eventually ended up making close to 15000 of these Angels. Though they were intended to go to the families, they ended up on a tree at Ground Zero. Mayor Guliani then invited these ladies out to view the tree. I got to go along and was allowed to see Ground Zero up close. It was a very emotional day! Firemen, Port Authority Officers, and workers from all over the site came to the tree to meet us. I can't even describe the feeling of the place. We met such wonderful people and they were so thankful for these little angels and there were hugs all around when we left, but it was hard to believe you were standing at this spot you saw on TV for months, this place where such evil happened! It's something I know I'll never forget. And though it's hard to say you're GLAD you were there, I was happy I had the priviledge of going and paying my respects, in a way...I'd like to go back someday. Maybe when they've built what they're going to build on the site I'll go back. I was going into work early because I had to interview someone at 9:00 am and I wanted to review their resume prior to the interview. I had the radio on and my sun roof open. I remember looking through the sun roof at the blue sky and thinking what a beautiful day... My morning was like any other. Filled with emails and early morning calls, coffee and wishful thoughts of a vacation... At about 8:45, I recieved a call from Annette in our HR wanting to talk to me about an issue that I cannot recall now. Five minutes into the call, I received a call on my cell phone. As usual, it was my mother. I remember thinking what does she want now? After my usual greeting, she told me that a plane had hit the WTC. I smirked and said "What is a plane doing flying over Manhattan?" I immediately thought that it was some type of commuter plane that had accidently flown into the building. Nothing serious. I asked if she was okay and then told her that I would call her back later. I resumed my conversation with Annette, telling her what my mother had told me. She replied in the same way I did. "What is a plane doing flying over Manhattan?" I could tell that she either thought I was making it up or that my mother was mistaken. We concluded our conversation and I began making my way to our lobby in oder to begin my interview. As I passed our Area President's office, I noticed that they were turning on his Television system. It occurred to me that they had also heard of the plane hitting the WTC. I continued on without thought. After greeting and inviting in the interviewee, I began telling him about the "accident". Again as we passed the President's office, I looked in to see if I could catch a glimpse of what was going on. At that point they were showing the WTC and you could see smoke coming from the building. I thought 'Wow! That's a lot of smoke!' I motion to the employee to wait, that I wanted to watch some of this. At this point people are steadily coming into the President's conference room to watch themselves. No one in the room had any idea of what was really happening. WE witnessed the second plane hitting the second building. We thought it was a replay of the first hit. Someone remarked how they had actually been able to capture it on film. But we could all see the "live" in the top left corner of the TV Screen and we all began to realize that this was a second plane. I thought we were under attack. It was like every thing began to happen at once. People began rushing from the room, looking for phones to call loved ones. People began to panic, people began to cry. I reached for my own phone to call my mother, my sister, my son's school. At the same time I was trying to remember who worked in the city, at the WTC. Was there someone that I need to get to? I was rooted to the floor I couldn't move. I was staring at the TV, thinking 'This is not happening. This is a bad movie plot'. I couldn't get a call out. Every line was busy. Too many trying to make calls. Moments later, the news began communicating about the Pentatgon and the flight in Pennsylvania. Everyone was terrified. Title A name given to the resource September 11 Digital Archive Stories Description An account of the resource This collection is the bulk of the archive, representing the reactions and experiences of thousands of individuals beginning in 2002. 911DA Story 911DA Story: Story Tell us about what you did, saw, or heard on September 11th. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11 was a day that went by in slow motion. It seemed that it would never end. And then on Sept. 12, it was like reliving it all. I was a high school freshman thinking that my worst fear was Algebra I honors, but I am scared to say that I was wrong. I was in Algebra I when the bell rang and I walked into the hall. Unlike every other day in high school history the halls were almost silent. Everyone was walking slow and as quietly as possible and almost silently whispering to there neighbor all the information they knew. When my principal came over the intercom to inform us of the events I was shocked. I immediatly asked to go to the restroom. If cell phones really cause brain tumors I should have about 8 of them. The bathroom should have had its own tower. Everyone was calling and checking on there family. Not having a family and living my best friends, I called them. They are in college and most of the were at work. I called my best friend who told me that his older brother worked in the second tower. By this time it was almost 10:30 central time. The events had been played on teevision many times. I was begining to get a clear picture. My school went into lockdown. I live in the same city as Barksdale Air Force Base. The place President Bush went to to make his speech. I saw Air Force One and I cried for the man who it was up to save our country. I watch TV all day. I woke up to my best friend Steven getting in bed with me and telling me that his brother Seth had been killed. For many people they could not believe that the towers were gone. I couldn't and still can't believe that I live in Louisiana and was so affected by those events. The nation was really hurt, and so was I.
