I turned in the TV and saw that hte morning news was showing a tall building ablaze. Suddenly I saw a large plane approaching and I thought it was a replay until I saw it stike the second tower. I immediately thought of all the people in these two towers who could not escape with the fires below them. I never expected that both buildings would collapse in only a few minutes. Thank God that mmany thousands were able to escape. But how heart breaking that nearly three thousand could not make it to safety. We will never forget them. Now will we ever forget those who planned and executed this terible mass murder of the innocent. We must do what is necessary to see that thisneverhappens again!! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I woke up the morning of September 11 thinking about how tired I was. My 20 month old son, Kenny, had been up a lot the night before coughing. Also, I was 5 months pregnant and was just starting to get to that "uncomfortable at night" stage. I had had my ultrasound the day before and my husband and I decided to find out what we were having since we knew this was our last pregnancy. We were overjoyed to find out that we were having a girl! I couldn't wait to share the news with my friends at work. I was staying at my parent's house, as I had been doing for the past 15 months, because my Mom was helping my husband and I out by watching Kenny for us. He had some health issues and we were trying to keep him out of day care as much as possible. Anyhow, I was in the upstairs bathroom getting ready for work when the phone rang. I knew something was wrong because no one calls that early unless there is a problem. All I could think of was that one of my brothers or sister was having trouble. It was my brother calling from Boston telling us to turn on the TV because a plane had just hit the World Trade Center. My Dad was yelling at my Mom to turn on the TV and I was telling him to be quiet so he would not wake the baby. When the TV finally came on, I could not believe the images. It was so horrible to watch and think about what those people were going through but we honestly thought it was just a horrible accident. The three of us were horrified as we watched the second plane hitting the tower. We knew then that something was terribly wrong. I began to weep and felt as if I was going to be sick. I wanted to go upstairs and hold my little boy and shelter him from all of this but I didn't want to wake him from his sleep and from his innocence. After almost an hour, I finally had to tear myself away, as I had a long commute ahead of me and knew I would be late if I didn't leave at that moment. I turned on KFWB in the car and listened the whole way in to work. My husband and I kept calling each other to give each other updates. He was watching the TV at our home when the first tower fell. He started screaming, "Oh my God - it's falling - it's falling". I said a silent prayer that my co-workers were ok. We had a small office in one of the towers (the first one hit) and I knew there was a group of people from my office in NY that day for a Distributor/VAR Meeting. I am happy to report that all of my co-workers did make it out alive, including Michael Hingson who walked down some 78 flights of stairs with his guide dog, Roselle. I heard about the second tower falling from the Radio Announcer and I just started crying. I was surprised at the level of intensity of the pain I was feeling. I looked around on the freeway to see the faces of other people who were crying or trying to hold back their tears. We were all dazed and just looking at each other. It was like we needed to have some kind of human connection. At least that is how I felt. One thing I will never forget about the commute in that day (about 75 minutes) is how eerily quiet the skies were. Normally, I see many planes overhead but that day there were none. I knew the planes had been grounded but I kept looking up to see if there were any other highjacked planes headed our way. I remember being scared to death that I was on the freeways in Los Angeles, which seemed a likely target for more terror. I couldn't wait to get off the roads so I could feel a little more safe. I spent the rest of the day wondering when the West Coast was going to be hit with this wave of terror. Thankfully, it never did. Not a lot of work was accomplished that day. Most everyone spent the day talking with co-workers or calling loved ones. We would occassionally get email updates about our co-workers that were in New York to let us know that everyone had been accounted for and was alright. I spent some time trying to track friends down that live and work in NYC. I left the office early so I could beat traffic home. All I wanted to do was see my son and give hugs and kisses to him and all my family members. Even though I was not personally affected on 9/11/01, I feel that my life has definitely changed. It was hard when my daughter Emily was born 4 months later not to think, "What kind of world have I brought you into"? I know that our innocence as a country died that day and can never be reclaimed. I hold my family a little tighter these days and say a prayer of thanksgiving every day that we had another joyous day together. It will be a sad day when my children come to ask me about the events of 9/11/01 and where I was. I hope that I can convey the horror of the events that day; the fear and chaos as the day progressed and the anxiety we, as a nation, felt in waiting and hoping to find survivors. I hope I can make them feel the strength we had as we came together and the pride we felt and still feel for our country and all of the many heroes that arose from the rubble that day. We will never forget 9/11/01 and the people who gave their lives and I feel it is important to pass this on to our future generations so that they will never forget either. In closing I would like to thank all of the many volunteers, firemen and women, policemen and women, military personnel and the many others that have been so strong this past year. You have helped us begin the healing process. I also want to say to the families of all the victims that you are in our hearts and prayers. Your loved ones will never be forgotten. My husband was getting ready to take him to work and I was watching my nephew. My brother who was outside at the time looked over at our neighbors T.V. and I heard him say "Oh my gosh!" He then turned on the T.V. in the apartment and I heard both him and my husband say "Oh my gosh!" I came out of the room and saw the second plane hit the towers. Then they showed the Pentagon and my brother said "I have to go to work now!" While they were gone I watched both the towers fall with my 2 year old nephew.I remember thinking what about all those poor people still trapped inside. Then my nephew asked me what was going on. I explained to him what happened that some people took some planes and crashed them into the two towers and the Pentagon and hurt a lot of people and some kids too. My friend called me at 9 and said the Twin Towers were falling down. Being half asleep I thought it was like the Leaning Tower of Pizza. I turned on the tv and saw a horrific site. I was in disbelief. I felt volnerable. I could not believe that something like this could happen here, in the U.S. I contacted my father who works in the city. I found out that it was his day off. All of my uncles work in the city and one works in the Twin Towers. He reasured me that they were all ok and were sent to the north side of Manhattan. My Uncle Billy ran out of his tower when the first one got hit and he was also ok. I felt reasured. I did not know what to feel after that. It did not seem real for the longest time. Being a native New Yorker, it felt like something so personal was taken away from me. Some people question "where was God?" People may think that God was not there that day. I do not question that. I saw his presence, not in the act of hatred but in the bravery and acts of kindness of the men and women of New York's bravest and finest. God was in their hearts and their acts of bravery. September 11, 2001 was exactly 11 days before my 13th birthday, and the day of my friend Kelly's birthday. I was not in a very excited mood to be heading off to my school. But in the last 10 mins of my global class the loud speaker came on. My principal at the time informed everyone in the school that two commercial airlines had hit the world trade center. I couldn't comprehend anything. It was wayy to much of a shock. As the day went by kids were being signed out and teachers were sending us down to guidance couselors. On my bus ride home I thought about what was going on and if people were ok. I didnt even bother to go to my house. I went to my neighbors and watched what had gone down all day. I was in such amazement that anything like this could be happening. I became so scared as I relalized that soo many people were down there. My father went down as a doctor to help. My mother was on call in her hospital waiting to see if they needed her to go down. My uncle a firefighter in rescue 2 was down there. I just knew he was. I was frightened that I would lose family. My father went missing for 2 days, my uncle for 10. He was found on my birthday, dead on floor 136 by the elevator. The whole idea hadn't hit me until six months after and still haunts me today. I can't imagine what people went through who workd in the world trade center, nor those who were on the planes that day. To have to call loved ones and tell them your not coming home to them. This world is ugly, but with the small help we give one another, everything can be rebuilt. One of my favorite quotes someone gave me is "What we do doesnt define who we are. What defines who we are is how well we rise after falling" Our nation did this for a short time. But we rose together and we need to continue that process everyday. Tell us your story: On the morning of September 11, I had my first two English classes of ninth grade students in the Taylor Allderdice High School library for orientation. At the end of the orientation at about 9:55, I was on my way back to my classroom to prepare for my senior classes when I heard the library aide talking to someone on the phone about a plane that had been hijacked. Nothing to get too excited about, I thought; unfortunately, plane hijackings had become fairly common events in our world. I wondered where this one had occurred, but I was not concerned enough to investigate further. I assumed I would get the details later on the news. After spending a free period in my room, I greeted the first senior student Steve Schuffert who arrived, as usual, well before the rest of the kids. Now Steve is a kidder, but when he said that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center, I knew he was serious and not making up a story just for the shock effect. I could not believe that something like this could happen, but when the students showed up for class, I knew that whatever I had planned for the day would have to be saved for another time. Most of the students had heard, and some had even seen on TV, some of the events of the morning, unlike myself. After hearing their speculation that Arab terrorists were behind it all, I did my best to counteract their dismay and anger by pointing out that we had thought the same about the Oklahoma City bombing and that even if it was Arabs who had done it, not all Muslims were extremists and wished us harm. Still, resentment was high, and many of the boys, especially, were ready to seek revenge on whoever had done this evil deed. In fact, revenge and their willingness to fight for the USA became a theme in the rest of the senior classes that I met later that afternoon, although by that time, many of the students had been picked up by their parents or had left school on their own. Allderdice High School is located in a section of Pittsburgh called Squirrel Hill which has a large Jewish population. Because of the circumstances and the uncertainty about what exactly was transpiring, many parents were alarmed that our high school could have been a target, also. We had recently experienced a multiple killing of ethnic minority members in Pittsburgh, and people were fearful, this time of something larger and much more sinister that we needed to guard against. As a result, by the end of the school day, most of the students had gone home. At lunch in the faculty room, we were in a daze and confused about how to cope with this tragedy. We heard about the son of one of the teachers who attended college in Manhattan and how he had witnessed some of the effects of the attack. He had called his mom and told her that he was going to stay with a friend to Brooklyn for a while, until he thought it was OK to return to his dorm. The events were just so staggering that it took all of our fortitude to survive until the end of the school day at 2:17 when the buses arrived to pick up the few remaining kids. When I got home, I collapsed in front of the television to view the events for the first time. How could someone hate our country so much that they would plan and execute such a plan? What kind of people were they? How could such a thing happen without our intelligence agencies knowing about it? I know that some political extremists are willing to die for a cause, and I know the mindset of certain enemies of the US; however, I felt at that time and still do, that whatever it takes to protect our people must be done, both militarily and politically. (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.) I was in the military, preparing to go to work. I remember very vividly that I had my BDU bottoms on, the brown T-shirt, and only one black sock. A fellow soldier came in from next door in my barracks room and told me, "Come in here. Now." The sense of urgency in his voice was so dire that I came into his room with one sock on to watch the impact on his television. We stayed in that room until the very last moment, until we went to work, to find a colonel at the gate waving people away, telling us all to return to our rooms and get ready, because the Pentagon had come under attack and we might be next. What is your strongest memory of that day? I worked in a facility that we were not allowed to bring radios into. But a lot of us needed to know what was happening. My strongest memory is of people walking up to the building with radios in hand, wanting to know the most up to date information, then tossing them aside as they entered the building, because they couldn't take them inside. That little pile of handheld radios was very memorable..and very sad. How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally? It's a horrible event. A horrible event that has affected everyone. We can never do anything without someone raising the spectre of September 11th. The measures that will be taken in revenge, and the Patriot Act, George W. Bush trying to use it for politics...everything. I think it also showed me how trivial are the decisions that save people's lives. Many of my friends worked in the World Trade Center, and my dad would have been taking the PATH train that went underneath it at the time of the collapse. But instead, for various reasons, they all decided not to go into work that day until later. And by that time, they were safe. Except a woman that my father danced with at a wedding, that might have been his girlfriend. I can still see them dancing, sometimes, when I close my eyes and think about it. But as I got up for class just like every day of the week, dressed, and put on my heavy book bag, I had no idea how heavy America's heart would soon be. It's hard to believe that as I trudged up Bascom Hill, staring at the statue of Lincoln that stands at the top, how a country known for it's freedom was being attacked by those whom hoped to not only bring death to citizens, but to the unity that the United States prides itself in. It's funny, I didn't turn on the news like I normally did each morning, but most likely if I did the attack would have been yet to occur. I was not until I walked into my class that I heard students discussing a plane. A plane that had crashed into one of New York's Twin Towers. None of us new what was to come, and I set the disaster aside as a mere accident, not a carefully thought out plan to bring death to thousands. I don't know how I went the whole day on campus without realizing the sheer magnitude of what was transpiring. It was not until I walked to the bookstore, that I noticed everyone quiet, everyone watching tv monitors, and it was then that I saw more than just a plane crash. I saw a terrorist attack. I rushed back to my dorm, to find my roommate in front of the tv in awe, as was I. I had lived this day knowing nothing, naively thinking that there weren't people out there that would intentionally crash a plane into a New York sky scraper. But my trust, my belief that no one could commit such an act was soon replaced by fear and anger. The images I remember most are of those downtown, holding up pictures, frantically interviewing with reporters describing their loved ones, whom later as we would find out, most were already gone. The amount of fear and grief that spread across campus was evident. I sat up in my dorm building 9 stories in the air, and thought about how I would escape if such a terror attack would invade our campus community. I was scared and this topic, 9/11 and the fear which invaded America, but only pulled us closer was discussed in classes across campus in the next week. I will never forget my Political Science class. We postponed lecture and were instructed to write. Write a letter to be opened 20 years from 9/11, by ourselves, or a loved one if the world should be such that we pass on. I remember writing that letter, and hoping I would live to have kids, live to see this country progress. Hoping that those responsible were brought to justice, and that this country would live to see the day where peace is possible. I still have that letter, and I have lived to see this country come together in a time when we needed to do so the most. God Bless America, and God bless the victims and their families. I was driving to GSA on the Guanus expressway when the second plane hit the south tower right before my eyes. At that point it didnt take a rocket scientist to realize that it was an attack on this great country. I got into the emergency lane of traffic and headed for the battery tunnel thinking maybe i could help. Behind me was Rescue # 5 from the 160 firehouse on Staten Island witch is two blocks from where i was born and raised. When i came out of the battery tunnel ,i parked my pickup truck on the corner of West street. I grabbed my camera ,which i carry with me all the time,, and started shooting pictures.. My better judgement told me not to go down to the towers. I guess i knew from past safety and fire training that jet fuel burns at 2000 degrees plus and can melt steel .. When i saw Rescue 5 make that right turn for the towers, i felt scared for them.. Im standing there in the street talking to a detective from the NYPD saying oh my god, the people are jumping, two and three at a time and there is nothing we can do about it. The flames were shooting from the towers ,they were a purplish red color like a furness. I told the detective that unless im very wrong, the towers are gonna fall. It wasnt thirty seconds later that the south tower started to fall, people just stood there in shock watching it come down. It sounded like ten pile drivers all working at the same time as each floor crashed onto the floor beneath it. As the giant cloud of hot ash was comming at us you can hear people screaming from down the street. I stood there in shock clicking my camera but never looking into the viewfinder. My pickup truck was parked in the street with the keys still in it. I thought i would make my get away in it. Thats what i thought. This guy jumps in it and takes off heading for the Staten Island ferry. Now what do i do,i run into this loading dock in one of the apartment buildings on West street, a police officer with the name tag Taylor joins me. Together we try to kick down the door on the platform of the loading dock,a third men joins in but the door wouldnt budge. Now the dust is overwelming us so we wrapped our shirts around are heads, we made our way about fifty feet down West street where we found two big glass doors that were the entrance to an apartment building. I put my boot through the glass door which was locked and started running into the lobby. We ( officer Taylor and myself) ran about twenty feet down the hallway and then stopped, like we were thinking with the same mind, we looked at each other and said, we have to go back , the people are out there. We started throwing people into the doorway. All you can hear in the street was Oh my god ,Oh my god. There was one lady sitting on the curb with a plastic bag over her head, she was ready to pass out. I took the bag off and carried her into the building. We got about 30 or so people into that building and out of harms way. About ten minutes later i said my goodbyes and headed south , maybe i would find my truck down by the ferry. I remember walking into my Study Skills class, my teacher turned on the T.V. and we all sat down and watched as plane's went flying through the "Twin Towers". I was very sad when I saw innocent people jumping from the towers. After that I saw pitures of people who died in the crashes. I also saw people running away from the buildings, and then I saw the first tower colapse. I witnessed alot of things on that day. It was very devastating to many people. My life has changed a little since Septmber 11, 2001. I am more patriotic and a lot more caring to others. I stand proud when I say the "Pledge of Allegiance". I also pray every night for my family and myself. Other people's lives have changed also. They fly american flags all day long. They wear red, white and blue for remembrance. I think September 11th should be recognized every year, also all of the people who died should be honored every year. The "Twin Towers" should be remembered because they were the tallest buildings in New York. The firemen and police officers should be remembered (they helped clean up the buildings and also saved lives.) I think we should make September 11th a holiday of rememberance. I also hope that the people who died should get there names on a plaque, also the firemen and police officers should have a special plaque. My family didn't fly a flag. I wish we would have, because everyone eles did. I have two in my bedroom above my bed, I look at them every night. They remind me of that day. My feelings have changed about the flag. I had just dropped my son off at his Brooklyn elementary school and returned home. My husband, who was supposed to already have left for a meeting in downtown Manhattan, was standing in front of the television: "something awful has happened. a plane crashed into one of the trade towers." i knew immediately it was no accident -- the day was too clear and the towers too tall for someone to accidentally fly into them. just as i was telling him this the second plane hit. i heard the explosion and felt my house shake. i thought immediately of my neighbor who worked across the street from the Towers and of my son, suddenly so far away. I walked outside to see the impossibly blue day suddenly clouded by gray, debris already starting to float across the river to my house, my neighborhood: bills of lading singed from fire; an insurance claim form; an improbable agronomy of new york state list. I rushed to pick up my son, cancelled his dental appointment -- the receptionist couldn't quite understand the urgency to cancel! -- and walked through my culturally diverse neighborhood looking into the ghostlike faces of people I would never have noticed before. I waited for word from my neighbor, who narrowly escaped a fireball at Century 21 and his wife, who witnessed it all from her office in downtown Brooklyn. Walking home a flaming briefcase landed at her feet, a burning sock landed on her companion's head. One of my friends hat told me that a plane had went into the Pentagon. I thought that she was lying until I turned on the news, and saw them replaying the planes hitting the WTC. I couldn't, and still really can't grasp the concept that some one could hate a group of people enough to take so many innocent lives. It stills seems like a movie to me, it's just to real to be real. I've always had a fear of flying, after 9-11 it only got worse. I'm worried because my brother is in the Army and he is being sent out to Bosnia. While many people lost family and friends in the incident, I lost no one. Possibly this is the reason why I've gotten over the terrible terrorist events quicker than some. When I first herd about it I was in school. They made an announcement saying that the world trade towers were hit and they collapsed. We got out of school early that day because of what had happened. When I got home the only thing that was on television was news about what had happened. Terrorists from Afghanistan high jacked four American planes. They crashed two of them into the world trade center towers. The towers caught of fire from the planes fuel. After about an hour after the towers got hit they collapsed, killing thousands of people. September 11th did not have a big affect on me or my family. It did not have a big impact on us because no one we knew died that day. But we felt sorry for the people who died or lost loved ones that day. It had an impact on my generation because this is probably the biggest tragic event that will happen in our lives. America has changed a lot since September 11th. It has made children motherless. Fatherless, and even parentless. Also people have lost there husbands, wives, friends, family members, and loved ones. Air ports have tons of security to make sure there are no weapons, bombs, or anything else that could harm someone. My life has changed a little since September 11th. I am a little scared that people will come again and kill more people. I also am kind of scared to go on an airplane. This past summer I went on a cruise and we had to fly to Florida, and I did not want to fly down to Florida but we had to. When I got on the plane I was scared, but everything turned out to be just fine! The world will always remember September 11th. We will remember what happened that day and pass on the story of what happened, to generation to generation. The United States of America will always be united. When they reported the first plane crashing, I thought there must have been an airtraffic controller problem. Being from New York, I could no imagine what we would soon learn. I called my wife and told her to turn on the T.V. I then called New York, work...everyone I knew! Then the second plane hit! I told my wife at that moment our way of life in America has just changed forever. I knew we were then under attack. I turned around and went home to hear on the radio in horror that our Pentegon was hit, and of a plane maybe crashing in PA. At that time no one was sure if that report was true. When I came into my house, I saw the 2 buildings ablaze, I could only wonder who I might know working at the Trade Center. When the buildings fell our house cried, cursed, and wanted to help. We also felt helpless watching this tragedy unfolding in our living room. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was working the night shift at a small community hospital. I was watching the news alone in the lunch room when the local new channel had urgent news in from NY of a fire at the WTC, i continued to watch and wasn't really sure what was going on, There was some talk of an attack, then the second plain hit! i ran to the front office and told everyone that was working. I guess it didn't set in to them what i was telling them, because they just looked at me half asleep. I then went back to watch the tv slowly workers walked in, soon it sank in what was going on. I just wanted to go home and call my 7yr. old son, he lives with his mom and stepdad who is in the Army at Ft. Knox, KY. I called as soon as i could get through, it was amazing of how busy the lines were, Paul(sons stepdad) answered I asked him if he was watching what wasgoing on , he informed me that he didn't know until he was woken up and put on stand-by, by the army. I was happy to hear that at a moments notice that the US armed forces was ready to defend our freedom, and protect our home land. We continued to conversate about what was going on and if he had any info. I heard my son in background asking Paul if that was "dad" on the phone paul said yes and gave my son the phone, the first words out of my sons mouth was "are you okay, pop's" here i was worried about my son who was almost 2000 miles away and to hear that i knew he was okay. i said yes and we exchanged Ilove you's, and we talked for at least an hour. It was hard i just wanted to hold and protect my son from what ever the future was holding. it was time to say our goodbye's and he told me not to worry cause Paul and his mom would take care of him and his soon to come baby sister. because in his words "we have tanks and god".
