Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had taken a group of people on a cruise to Nassau. I got off the ship to go see the remains of the Straw Market which had burned to the ground the week before we arrived. I stopped in a shop where the clerks were all standing around listening to the radio. One of them said, "You should listen to this; it's your country they're talking about. As I listened with more and more horror, people kept coming in and listening. I left the shop and went into another where the same situation was being played out. I went on to the hole which had been the straw market, took a quick look and then headed back to the ship. I was stopped more than once by Bahamians who expressed sympathy and support. I returned to the ship, and stayed glued to the TV for the remainder of the cruise. We were not sure we'd be able to return home as all ports of entry to the US were closed. The cruise line (Carnival) made efforts to get everyone home as quickly as possible, and dropped all long distance and internet charges for the day, so that we could get in touch with friends and family to advise them we were OK. As I watched the events on TV, I couldn't help but compare the hole in downtown Nassau to the HOLE in NYC. It's a situation I would prefer never to be in again. I only wanted to be home with my family, to hold and love them. I AM PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN, AND I THANK GOD EVERY DAY FOR ALLOWING ME TO LIVE IN THIS COUNTRY WHERE I AM FREE. The words of the Oath of Allegiance still so fresh in my mind and edged in my heart for ever there to stay. I am going to treasure these words of honor and pledge to the Nation, I Love so much and will admire as long as I shall live. I was born in a country, enslaved by the enemy at that time, and never will forget the picture my father secretly showed me when I was just a child. It was a beautiful statue with a torch, held so high that it brought light and hope for all of us in the darkest of times. That is still the light, so bright that brings together all Nations yearning for peace, and gives us mankind`s most valued asset - the Freedom to share. When so horrible a tragedy struck my so beloved new home, the United States, I took out the flag to fly it again in the sky on the wings of gentle winds, just as proudly as I did last year. The torch, now in every American`s heart has became a guide to overcome evil and horror, and gives us the light to carry on and fight the fears, that were planted so crudely into our peaceful days. The American people are so strong, like never before, and with tolerance in their hearts they are calling out for justice in our troubled world. On a sunny so beautiful September morning sudden suffering crashed down on a great Nation. In the black cloud of vaporized concrete and death Heros in line of their duty gave their own precious life to save innocent human beings. This is the spirit of the country I name so proudly my own. We, the people with many different heritages and faith, we stand all United in our deepest sorrow but we stand United in our wish too, to rise above this unimaginable tragedy with the glory of our History and the Flag, Red, White and Blue. I never knew what it meant to have something so big and so eventful that it could make my whole life completely different. The morning of September 11th knew what those people meant. Fear. Pain. Shattered memories. Loss September 11th was just another day. I woke up at about 7:30 and went to class like usual. When class was over around 11:30 my professor seemed uneasy. Before we all left she spoke with an uncertain tone, ? Our country is under attack.? Foreign words to me. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. This is America, how could we be under attack? Is it even possible? The Twin Towers had fallen? I left class and frantically called mom... ?Is Mr. Corea safe?? He is a long time family friend who works in New York and commutes from my hometown in New Jersey. ?He is fine,? she said, ?He is stuck in the City thought and wont be able to get out for a while.? I hung up the phone and started to cry. i felt as though someone had stolen a part of my childhood. It was almost a tradition , my dad would take my brother and me on the short train ride into the City to visit all the different cites. This happened almost every year right after Christmas. We would reach lower Manhattan and visit this man-made marvel. It was amazing, two towers soaring into the sky. I was always intrigued by the long elevator ride. When you reach the top and take those first few steps out onto the observation deck the view is awesome. In the crisp, winter atmosphere you could see forever. All of this beauty and wonder was destroyed in one short day. I couldn't stop thinking about how i would never feel the awesome power of these sights again. Only in my memories. Later that terrible day i called my parents to make sure that everything was ok at home and to see if Mr. Corea was safe at home. My mom said that he was fine but...(in that instant thousands of things raced through my mind). But what? ?Molly, this afternoon Dad called and asked if Mr. Swenson had taken that job at the Twin Towers in April?? They weren't sure. After calling Mrs. Swenson my mom fount out that he was on the 102th floor with Cantor Fitzgerald when the plane hit. As soon as she said this my heart fell through the floor, through the basement and into the depths of the earth. This couldn't be true. Mr. Swenson can?t be gone. I had grown up camping with this man. He was our neighbor, our friend, he couldnt be gone. He took me sleding in the winter and to the pool in the summer with his children. He was an EMT, on of the kindest people anyone could eve meet. It wasn?t possible for him to be gone. I kept saying to my mom, ?People in thowe floors got out, maybe he did.? And all she could reply back to me was, ? Molly, you know Mr. Swenson, he would help other people before he even thought about himself.? An answer that I knew in my heart but couldnt accept. I never cried so much in my life. For months I tried to be normal, but I couldnt seem to. It is hard when you dont even want to be you anymore because the hurt is to much. You try to find a reason in it all of it. Why? Why would anyone kill thousands of innocent people and destroy so many lives and memories. What keeps you going is knowing that you have an angel watching over you and all of the lives thathe touched. Life continues, but you always have your memories. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: When I first heard of the attacks on the World Trade Center, I was in my fourth period class, Human Geography. At first I thought that the pilot of the plane had lost control while flying to his destination. But then I soon realized the reality of it all. I could not believe it. Those things only happened in the movies, it wasn??t supposed to be true. Everyone in the class was in a state of shock and wonder. We then heard about the attack on the Pentagon and the second plane hitting the WTC. Our school principal came on the PA and accounted this news to us. His voice sounded very distressed and concerned. As the day went along, everyone was talking about the incident. Finally it was time to go home. The first thing I did was turn on the television. That??s when it really truly hit me. All the devastation and confusion shown on TV was just so overwhelming and unreal. When I heard of all those people who died in the planes, I felt so sad for those families. During that tough period, I began to think back on my life and family. I realized how lucky I was and how family is so important to oneself. I was glued to the television for about a week. The media did an excellent job in covering all the details of the incident. Each time I turned on the TV I gained new knowledge and could see with my own eyes the destruction of the towers and bravery of all the firemen. It was so touching and sad at the same time. Although the attack left a great unforgetable hole in my of our lives, it still had some positive outcome. Everyone really bonded as an American, even other countries participated with our struggle by providing us with support. Also our patriotism rocketed sky high and the outpour of American flags was magnificant. One thing that did dissapoint me was that some people acted out their angry and fear out on the people of the Muslim/Iraq ethinicity. Those people, just like the people on the planes are innocent. However, some of our Americans didn??t think that and lashed out on them by harassing them. This did dissapoint because I thought that we were mature enough to realize reality from fear. Now a year later after that tragic attack on our nation, people are going about their same old ways. It just shows that even though a tragedy happened people do move on. Moving on is the only way to let the past go and prove to those terrorists that they will not win and that we will never fall down. I will always remember September 11, 2000 as a day of sadness but more of an unification of our whole nation. It will be imbended in my mind for many years and I will tell my children and grandchildren of the bravery and patriotism I witnessed with my own eyes. I was coming from school and my grandfather was watching the news and I saw a plane crash trough a building. I didn't really cared what happened then because I didn't know about it. Another reason why I didn't care why is because I was too busy doing other things than watching the news. The news was really boring so I really didn't really care about things like this. I saw a little bit about the three planes crashed through the building. They said there were a lot of people who died. I saw a people talking about the people who died. Everyone I saw was crying. I was sitting in my 2nd hour class at school, AP Government, and we were discussing democracy and what it meant to us. This ended up being strangly ironic. All of a sudden, other teacher from the hall knocked on our door and told us to turn on the news in our room, and that America was under attack. Our eyes widened as our teacher switched on the TV. We didn't know what to expect. Nothing like this had every happened to us in our lifetime. By the time we had turned it on, the first tower had already been hit. No one knew what it meant. I could just hear whispers of "Oh my God" fading in and out across the room. At first a few students suggested that it was just an accident or a hijacker whose initial intentions weren't this extreme. However, after the second plane hit, we knew it was no accident. A few minutes later, the same teacher came back to our room and told us to change the channel because the pentagon had just been hit in addition to the towers. We couldn't believe our ears. America was under attack. My first thoughts were that this couldn't be happening, and then, that the USA was going to probably declare war. We watched the news the rest of the hour because there was now way we were going to be able to concentrate on anything else. By the time we got to our 3rd hour class, just about every TV in the school was turnedon to the news. It was all the kids talked about in the hall. Everyone making their own theorys about it. In 3rd hour, our principal made an announcment that due to the events that day, we were allowed to leave the news on all day, or we could try to have a normal day of classes. Of course we all wanted to leave the news on. We watched in horror as the towers crashed to the ground. We watched people jumping to their deaths. I began to cry thinking about what that must have been like for them. We continued watching wanting to know why this happened and what was going to happen. There was talk of anthrax and terrorists and nuclear war. Every channel said something else. Slowly they began to piece together who caused this terrible act. Unfortunately, I had to take a math test that day, and our teacher refused to postpone it. I don't think I did very well on that test, for as you can imagine, integers and fractions were the last thing on my mind. I had to console a friend the next hour whose dad was in New York on a business trip. I just told him that I was sure he was fine and that he wasn't anywheres near the twin towers. When I got home that day, my mom was frantic. My sister goes to college on the east coast and is only a few minutes away from New York. My mom has the tendancy to picture the worst scenario possible. We finally got a hold of her and she was fine. She told us how crazy everyone at Brown ( her university) was going. People were already starting to organize groups and rallies. People there are extremely well educated there, so they knew exactly what had been going on in the middle east and the problems that occur there everyday. We continued to watch the news that day, calling all of our loved ones to make sure they had heard and to see how they were handling the situation. We watched the president address the nation to try to give us information and hope and what the future was probably going to look like. Now here I am, one year later, in school, writing this essay in class. I am surrounded by students dressed in red, white and blue. We are going to have a moment of silence next hour also. All of a sudden she came running inside, she was 12 at the time, yelling for me to turn on the TV. Every channel was covering it, an airplane had hit one of the Twin Towers. I sat on the couch, stunned. My God, how could an accident like that have happened.. those poor people. And then the other plane hit! We sat there for over an hour, trying to get a handle on what had happened. I tried to calm down my oldest, as I held my younger two in my arms. Then trying to keep everything as normal as possible I drove my daughter to school, and on the way, we heard about the Pentagon. After dropping my daughter off, I went to work and found the office in an uproar. Everyone was trying to get through to family members, and co-workers that worked in the Towers. The phone lines were down and cells weren't working...everyone was devastated. After a couple of hours they closed the office and allowed us to go home. I went to my house picked up my kids and headed for my in-laws. We were still waiting to hear from two of my brother-in-laws. One of them called and said that he was fine and would be home as soon as he could be, they had walked over the Brooklyn Bridge in order to get home. Then we heard that the other was on his way home also..and we all sighed in relief. We were all accounted for. My family was safe! The next day I found out that one of the girls I work with lost her brother, and his wife was 7 months pregnant. Someone else lost their dad. We started making collections of the things that they needed at Ground Zero, everyone helped...even the children! It was amazing, watching everyone pull together, this had only made all of us stronger. We would make it, and we would be all that much stronger for it! God bless all of those that lost someone, and for those that gave their lives up for me and mine... I can never pay you back and I will never forget you. I am an Aircraft Fueler and on that day I was fueling only Midwest Express flights. It was early in the morning I was just finishing up on a DC-9-10 when I noticed that the rampers were walking away from my flight that left in less than an hour. Once I was done with my flight, I went into the Midwest Operations room to see if they had any more fuel loads up. As I waited for my fuel loads I saw about 6 rampers sitting real close to the tv watching cnn. I could not see what they were watching, so I left the building and started my next flight. While fueling the MD-80 I called my co-worker (Jeff) on the radio and said Jeff if you have time go inside the Operations room and see what is going on in there. Jeff said ok and on he went, and he was only in there for about 5 min when he yelled on the radio to me (Mike) hurry come here to see this on cnn tv. We both could not believe what we were hearing from the people near the twin towers on tv. That same morning we had diversions from all over, planes like 727's,757's,DC-9's,MD-80's, and Airbus 320's it was a just a crazy day. Former President of the United States George Bush Sr even landed at Mitchell International due to the FAA restrictions to all flights in the USA. The only flights we had going out on the field were the 128th Air Refueling Wing which is the Military and flies KC-135R tankers. I will never forget what I saw, heard, or did that sad day. My heart and prayers go out to all the Aviation families who lost their loved ones on those doomed flights. Those pilots we lost will always be loved and remembered by all of us in the Aviation business. Now they are flying for the most important man to all, the LORD. Tell us your story: I was in an engineering test lab in Dearborn, Michigan, testing vehicle strategy software for Ford Motor Company, when I received a text message on my Company pager. At first I thought it was a prank, but all of us in the group received the same message at the same time: a commercial airliner had plunged into the World Trade Center in New York City. For a while, we continued testing software, not really sure if we should, or could, believe what we were being told. By the time the news of the second strike reached us, we started wandering out of the lab in search of confirmation, and as the reality struck home, we went off in search of our families. I, in particular, was worried about my brother-in-law Glen, who is a Day Trader in New York. At first we couldn't reach him, but he finally reported in, and said that on his way into the city that morning, he had a strange feeling and turned around, deciding to trade from home. For the last several years, I have been on a committee at Ford Motor Company that produces entertainment videos for Company holiday parties. I was so moved by the experiences of 9/11 that I decided a video tribute was in order. I approached the committee with the proposal, and was given unanimous approval to produce something to be shown in addition to the normal entertainment video which we produced for last December's holiday season. At first I was drawing a blank on what to produce, but then I noticed a recurring theme across the U.S.; cheerleading squads and other entertainment troupes were spontaneously, without warning, breaking into routines revolving around the Tom Petty song "I Won't Back Down". For some reason, this had a tremendous effect on me, somehow perfectly encapsulating the patriotic feelings that were sweeping the nation at the time. So that's what I did; I created a montage of 9/11 photos synchronized to Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down", and produced a Windows AVI file, which was subsequently incorporated into our Ford Motor Company entertainment video for last December's holiday season as a leader to the video. The video was very well received, and we sold several copies of the video (entitled "Car Wars"), donating all the proceeds to Operation Good Cheer, a charity in Michigan that buys holiday gifts for orphaned children. After all, several children were orphaned on that terrible day. Some managers in Ford Motor Company donated as much as $100 each for a copy of the video! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Well, September 11th 2001. I was in Lubbock, TX, attending Texas Tech University. It was the first semester of my senior year, and like the rest of the world my mind was occupied with a million other concerns that now all seem trivial compared to what happened that day. I had gone to bed the night before thinking about my senior seminar paper for my BA in history, what I wanted to do with my life, and about a girl I was in love with. I woke up the next morning went downstairs to get a cup of coffee and visit Cathy at the front desk (I lived and worked in a dorm), as I usually would. The person with the shift before Cathy was at the desk at the time. He told me what had happened, and at first I followed my learned inclination to disregard any information from that desk as unreliable gossip. But news like that! Oh my god! Why would anyone fabricate something like that? I got my coffee and immedately went upstairs to turn on the news. On the television, I saw the burning world trade center and the partially-obliterated Pentagon. The sight of such longstanding symbols of American pride and ingenuity sent a myriad of thoughts running through my mind. What was happening? Why? Was it safe to step out the front door to go to class that morning? Where was my family? Did they know what happened? Were they safe? What about my friends? How were they? After gathering myself together, I decided the best thing o do was to continue my day and watch as much of the news as possible. By doing that I could at least be near other people adn talk with them about what was going on and see how they were responding. I arrived in Dr. Mosher's New Nations in Latin America to find similar worries and response voiced by my classmates, and Dr. Mosher decided to cancel class after we convinced him that the best place to be was in front of the television watching the news. The rest of the day, I saw faces all over campus in shock, mouths wide open, eyes glued to any and every television available. I remeber hearing that gas prices were shooting up and seeing the lines at the gas stations. I remember a police officer getting out of his car to come in tell me I could not sit where I was sitting in the street due to the rush at the gas stations. He tried to display authoritarian anger towrds me as I spoke, but I saw the fear and worry in his face that was common to the rest of us. That day was a horrible day, and the fear of it still resonates in my mind at times. I know it will for many others too. It's a day I'll never forget, and one that will promt thought for me about many issues. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I got to work at about 7:15 am CDT that day. A co-worker of mine came in about 7:45 and told me that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. By that time, the only news website that was not overloaded was BBC News, and they had a crystal-clear picture of one of the towers with a plane-shaped hole in it. We even cracked dark jokes about "how bad can that pilot be?". When we got word not long after that of a second plane hitting the other building, the mood changed from concern to quiet terror, especially when we heard about the Pentagon. One of our co-workers in our area had a small boom box in her car that she brought in so we could listen to the radio. Our phones were ringing constantly, friends and relatives calling to see if we'd heard what had happened. And showing my ignorance of how the World Trade Center was set up, I had thought it was just the two tall buildings; I didn't know there were five other, smaller buildings in the complex. So when they first said that one of the towers had collapsed, I initially thought they meant the radio tower on top of one of the buildings, no big deal, right? I eventually figured out that they had meant the buildings. Some people left at noon, not being able to handle it. Others went to the local Best Buy over lunch so they could see what was happening, and came back to us with reports. I didn't fully realize the gravity of the situation until someone at work said her husband had heard that as many as 20,000 people could be dead in NYC alone. That's when I asked for a hug, from the man who had initally told me about the first plane. Once I got home shortly after 4 pm, I was able to turn on the news, just in time to see World Trade building #7 collapse. And of course, images of the planes, the collapses, the news that the plane that had crashed in a field in Pennsylvania was linked to this, too. I was shocked, angry, saddened...although I didn't know anyone personally who died or was injured, friends of mine had friends, family, and co-workers who perished. I cried every day for at least a week after 9/11. I kept telling myself I would be fine, and then I'd turn on the news and see the people searching for their loved ones, flyers made on their home computers telling where their loved one worked, what they were last wearing, and a picture, each person begging that if anyone had seen them in a hospital, to call. I knew all those people were dead, and I think by the second or third day, most of those people knew it, too, but didn't want to admit it. I still get that empty feeling inside when I think about what happened. I watch the documentaries on 9/11, hoping that one of them will say, "Nope, it didn't really happen, it was a bad dream." Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I went to work late on Tuesday September 11, 2001 because I stopped to vote in the Primary and go to the bank. I remember standing on the steps of the bank in Bayside, thinking what a gorgeous day it was, and being surprised to see smoke rising from the Twin Towers. I didn?t know what was going on, but I knew I?d better get to NYU Downtown Hospital ? the old Beekman ? since they would be in the center of things. I?d been their Director of HR from 1993-2000 (and still worked for the same health system) and knew I could help if they called a disaster. I took the next LIRR and, like everyone else, started calling around on my cell to find out what was going on, let my boss (uptown on the Mount Sinai campus) know where I?d be, and let someone at NYUDH know I was on my way. I stared out the window as we moved closer to the city and suddenly saw something streak from the second Tower (I didn?t know what happened until almost midnight that night). I realize now that I arrived downtown shortly before the WTC collapse itself and got stuck in the subway tunnel between Chamber & Cortland/WTC. The subway cars slowly filled with smoke, people started getting sick; I figured there must be a fire and didn?t think too much of it. We stayed where we were for a bit, then they backed us into the Fulton Street. MTA workers led us out single file with flashlights through a single set of subway doors and up to the corner of William and Fulton. When we got up to the street, all you could see was a sea of people running and yelling through smoke, but you couldn?t make out what was going on. It almost looked like a movie set. I couldn?t even tell where we were and I?d been on that corner, in that subway station, twice a day, for eight years! The police handed me a surgical mask and told me to run with the others. I showed them my hospital ID and they said there was no hospital that way (on William Street? Where would it go?) and sent me toward the Seaport. As soon as I realized where I was, I ran to the Gold Street/ER entrance to NYUDH. The scenes you saw on TV couldn?t begin to describe what it was like. I don?t know whom I saw first, but I remember getting a hug from someone, being cleaned off (I didn?t know I was dirty) and put to work. Over the course of the day/week, I saw lots of old employees who showed up, like me, to help out at ?the little hospital that could?. We did wherever was necessary, wherever it was needed, as hundreds of injured (and people too afraid to go anywhere else) ran inside the Hospital. At first that meant helping with triage -- calming patients and visitors; handing out hundreds of surgical masks and bottles of water; cleaning peoples faces and eyes; giving scrubs, socks and t-shirts to survivors; reuniting family members. Later it meant escorting police detectives as they interviewed witnesses; running errands for the control center; assisting security; dealing with the press; keeping track of admissions and discharges; helping people find ways to get home, etc. Ash and soot coated the entire inside of the Hospital and needed to be continuously cleaned. You could be standing next to a person and not know who it is, or even be able to identify their color! There was no air conditioning and we drank massive amounts of water to help with dehydration, breathing and the heat. Communication with the outside world was almost nil once the phones, cell phones too, went out ? no way to call families, get supplies, or even know what was happening outside our front door. No electricity and only minor generator power. The cafeteria, which normally served breakfast and lunch to the staff, was suddenly providing meals all day long, for staff, visitors, rescuers, anyone who needed a warm meal and someplace to rest. And there were dozens of doctors and nurses, some from a nearby convention, waiting for patients who never came. It wasn?t until the end of the second day that we realized there were no more survivors, but we kept waiting. That first night (9/11) a group of us left the Hospital together, not sure of what we would face. It was like walking into an apocolapse. We were the only ones moving along the street until we got to Chinatown, where small groups of people had gathered and were staring up at the sky silently. We honestly couldn?t figure out why, since you couldn?t even see the skyline through the smoke -- we still didn?t know what had actually happened. It took us another hour to find a subway that was running and get up to midtown where the streets were totally deserted ? no people, no cars, no nothing. I had never seen anything so surreal. A friend and I decided to take first train that came, which turned out to be mine. When we got to my house, her husband met us and told us that the WTC had collapsed, the Pentagon had been hit, and a plane crashed in PA. How was that even possible? I was right there ? literally in the shadow of the WTC ? wouldn?t I have known? I walked into my apartment like a zombie on automatic pilot, tore off my clothes and dropped them down the garbage shoot. Then I took a shower and must have washed my hair and body 8 or 9 times. For a while I just sat in that shower and cried. I was so tired and numb and couldn?t even think. I still hadn?t seen the TV or heard the radio reports, or processed where I?d been, what I?d heard and what I?d seen (that would take another few days or weeks or months). I was terrified to go to sleep, afraid of what my mind would see and think about. That first day set the pattern for the rest of the week. We took turns serving meals so that we could relieve the exhausted kitchen staff. We brought food to the senior citizen complex across from the Hospital and checked on the residents when the Red Cross couldn?t get through. We set up supply runs and staff runs. Whatever was needed, whatever we could do to keep our hands busy and our minds blank, we did. The commute was nothing like it had been in the past. We tried to travel in small groups, and always brought a change of clothes, water and a mask, because we didn?t know what awaited us. We had to find a new route every day as the city opened and closed subway stations; walking block after block toward ?Ground Zero? as the air got darker and more rank; going through police and military checkpoints; trying to hitch rides with police and emergency crews to get into or out of ?the zone?; seeing troops of National Guard walking where Wall Street ?suits? should be; walking on usually bustling streets and seeing everything closed and silent. You could communicate with coworkers, volunteers and rescuers without saying a word, but were greeted with cheers and hugs (and water) from the strangers who lined the outside perimeter of the zone. Emerging midtown after work several hours later, the sounds and sights of were jarring after being downtown all day. The sunlight/moonlight and clear skies seemed disrespectful, but the thunderstorms that came a few days later just added insult to injury. Like most people, certain images will be forever seared into my memory, some horrific, some heroic. I saw things at NYUDH that I wouldn?t have expected to see in a war zone. I also felt a solidarity with my coworkers and a pride in NYUDH that is unbelievable (and unfortunately unrecognized by the Mayor and the press). I can?t seem to shower enough or wash my hair enough to get the smell and feel of that blast off of my skin. Sometimes the thought of the ashes of cremated people on me makes my skin crawl. I?m exhausted, but afraid to close my eyes; I?m profoundly sad, but I?m also relieved that my little corner of the world remained intact. I?m torn between being filled with faith and having none; for the first time I dread the coming High Holy Days. I?m relieved that I missed most the coverage, but I?ve taped some of it and saved the newspapers. I know I should call some friends to see how they are, but I?m terrified to find out. I didn't realize how much of my own comfort level lie in ritual. When I go to see my parents in East Quogue on the weekends I have a habit of "checking to make sure that the bay is still there" by driving down to the corner each and every time I go to or from the house. I never realized that I did the same thing at home in Bayside -- I checked the WTC every day from both the LIRR platform and when I get in and out of the subway ? until I couldn?t do it anymore. One morning after the disaster, a bunch of us were trying to find our way to the Hospital from one of the subway stations. We looked up to find South on our compass ? the WTC ? but there was nothing in the skyline. I used to complain about how much I?d hated working on the 101st Floor of 2WTC during my days on Wall Street -- now I only remember how much I loved the view, the shopping, the concerts and events on the plaza? and I think ?there but for the grace of god go I??. I still love this city, maybe even more than I did before. I have no sense of personal vulnerability (I?m not afraid to go into the city, use the subways, walk in public buildings), but I feel as if the core of my world has been shaken. Tomorrow I?m off to see my parents. I?ve been grown up and on my own forever, and suddenly I need a hug from Mom and Dad. And, I want to check to make sure the bay is still there? Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My son Logan was diagnosed with a brain tumor in October of 1997. He was 18 months old. An operation was done to remove part of the tumor (part of it was inoperable) and a shunt was placed in his head. We went home full of hope, and prayed for the best. In March of 1999 Logan was having many problems with his shunt. There was infection after infection, and we were admitted into the hospital in May of 1999. It was then we had found out the tumor had grown back larger than it's original size, and had spread thoughout his brain and spinal cord. We spent four months straight in the hospital, surviving yet another brain tumor resection and countless infections. We went home (finally) in September of 1999 and our family, myself, my husband, my oldest son Duncan and Logan actually got to sleep in the same house for the first time in months. In October Logan embarked on his journey of chemotherapy and did remarkably well. Fourteen months later we were finished with our chemotherapy regimen, again hoping and praying for the best. In the meanwhile, we had decided to have another baby. Our son Tynan was born September 11, 2000 and he was a reason to celebrate! We had a great year - a new baby brother, no chemotherapy, no hospital stays! It was an incredible year for us. Logan was due for an MRI to check on his tumor growth. If the scan showed any growth - Logan was to go back on chemotherapy. My husband made the appointment for September 11, 2001. After telling me the date, I reminded him it was his son's birthday, and if we got bad news it would ruin the day. My husband, Robert Hillery of FDNY company E216:L108, assured me it would be good luck. "Tynan will bring us luck" he assured me and refused to change the date. Robert was supposed to work the night of September 10th and since the shift doesn't end till 9AM, had to get off work to be there for the MRI. He was supposed to be in his fireshouse on the morning of Septmeber 11, 2001. As our son was wheeled into the MRI room, my husband and I went to the waiting room and watched with horror as everything unfolded. When the first tower came down, he looked at me and said "I just lost alot of friends". I looked at him and said "Your son Logan saved your life today. If we weren't here today, you would have been at the Trade Towers this morning". My son Logan is my hero, not only for enduring over 20 surgeries, 24 months of chemotherapy and countless nights in the hospital, but for saving his Dad's life. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On 9/11, i was in school in about the third hour when one of my teachers came in. He always watch the news in the mourning. When he came in he said while watghing the news he heard that a plane had hit om of the twin towers. At first i thought it was just an accident so i didnt pay it any mind.....until my teacher came back in and said that a second plane had hit the SECOND tower. By then i knew that something was wrong. Two accidents happening at the same time at the same place? Couldnt be. After hearing that terrible news, i stayed calmed. Not soon after the news, my teacher came back about twenty minutes later NOW saying that a third plane had hit the Pintagon in Washington D.C. By that time, names were being called to leave school. I mean the name calling were going like crazy. I then asked my teacher could i go to the bathroom (really wanting to know what was going on.) My teacher unaware that it was a terrorist attack told me to go on. so me instead of going to the bathroom, i went to the guidence office. Near the front enterence of my school is a big glass window. When passing the window, i seen parents running up to the building in panic. When i went in the office, i asked my guidence secretary what was going on. She told me that America was under an attack. Now i was starting to get a little scared because this was really my first time to get to feel what war was like. Soon after talking to jer, i thanked her and went back to class. Finally (when about half of the school was gone), they let us out of school. Now my house was a walking ditance from the school. I was thinking these people are crazy letting us walk while this is going on!! To my surprise, when i left the building, my neigbor was sitting in her car waiting for me. By then iwas happy. When i got to my neigbor,s house, the news was on talking about the incident. I later on found out about the fourth plane that crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. Now no one never thoght about the two bildings coming down. When those buildings came down, riht then and there i knew that America was changed forever....... Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at home watching t.v. like millions of others when I saw planes crashing into the world trade center buildings. I realized we were going to war and started to cry because my nephew Joshua had just finished boot camp for the Air Force and my son and other nephew just became of age to be drafted if it came to that. Then I realized the devistation and lose of life taking place live on t.v. I began to pray for god's forgiveness of all mankind and for peace to the families personally affected by the lose of loved ones. Then there were all of the tributes, lines of blood donors, rows of pictures of missing loved ones. It was one of the sadest days of my life. I have never felt so helpless and I felt an emptiness even though I did not personally know any of the victims. It was and still is the children affected by 911 that affect me the most. I thank God for every day that I have with my children. I am thankful that the numbness has worn off. I sometimes feel our children have no future. How many more attacks, how many more wars? Why is there so much hostility between nations? We all have plenty of space. Our country is the only open armed country I know of. We allow everyone from every nation to come to our country and they hate us. I will never understand. Nothing will ever change what happened on 9/11/2001, but we as people can say enough is enough and try to love each other and get along. We all need each other!! I AM SO PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!! The guy in the next cube from me got a phone call from his mother at home, and told him that the first plane had hit.. we had internet access so we immediately went to news websites and I called my husband, who was at home from work, sick with a cold. While I was talking to him, he told me the second plane had hit.. we were all in shock and in disbelief.. the girl who shared a cube with me, said, "Osama"..... We heard there was a television on the 3rd floor, so we all went up there to watch live coverage and some started crying and most stood there in shock. Since we were at the front gate of a military base and close to DC and a Nuclear Power Plant (Calvert Cliffs), we were afraid we might be a target, so our boss told us we could take liberal leave if we wanted..I am a smoker and just needed to be home, in my own living room, with my husband and watch TV and chain smoke..so I left. The drive to work was backed up for miles the following day, due to extra security precations taken to get on base. I will never forget it as long as I live. Like a lot of folks, Sept. 11 started out like any other day for me. I don't work on Tuesdays, so after seeing my kids off to school and my husband off to his job, I settled down in front of my computer to surf and chat in peace. I hadn't bothered to turn on the TV or radio, so I had no idea that anything spectacular had happened. I remember that I was playing games at Pogo.com, when someone in the room mentioned a plane had crashed into the WTC. My first thought was that it was a freak accident, then one of the other gamers who happened to be watching the news reported that a second plane was heading straight towards the other tower. Then someone else stated that they thought they saw people jumping from windows. I left the room then went to every online news site I could think of to see what exactly had taken place. My sister called me to ask if I'd heard about what happened and I finally turned on the TV. I couldn't believe what I saw and heard. I sat there in shock until I saw the first tower collapse. I remember tears running down my face and not bothering to do anything about it. When my kids came home from school, I told them what had happened. I reassured them that they were safe because the only planes that were being allowed to fly for the time being would be those belonging to the military or planes taking help to the victims, and living near a military base meant the only planes flying near us would be military. My daughter heard about the rescue personnel who lost their lives when the towers fell. She had told me she wanted to be an EMT when she grew up. After hearing what had happened, she told me she STILL wants to be an EMT or a doctor, so she can help people who are hurting (she was 6 when this happened). My son's school held a moment of silence around the flag pole each morning as the flag was raised. He made sure that I got him to school on time so he could participate. I've visited the web tribute sites. I've seen the pictures, read the comments left by other visitors and even left comments of my own. The terrorists succeeded for only a moment, then the American people did what we've done throughout history. We opened our hearts and extended our hands to our fellow Americans. Yes, this brought out the ugly side of a few people, but there was so much more GOOD done as a nation. We were shown that we're not safe, but we also showed that the flame of the American spirit may waver but it will NOT be extinguished. I was at my desk when I heard one of my co-workers say that a plane had run into one of the World Trade Center buildings. That was at about 8:50 A.M. The news spread like wildfire throughout our office. Our Human Resource department turned on the large TV in the lunchroom. Most of us went into the lunchroom to witness the horror of both buildings in fire. The feeling of dread and unbelief was obvious on each person's face. At that point in time, we knew that it could not have been an accident, but if it was, what went wrong? Was the Air Traffic Tower giving our pilots wrong instructions? It was hard to believe that anyone would intentionally do such a heinous act. We tried to work, but our heart and minds were not on work. When we received calls from our customers, we talked about the incident. We felt close to this because we had an office in New York on Chambers St and we had just moved from that one to another building only a few days before. Also, we were trying to find some of our New York personnel, and had a hard time finding a couple. One man had walked from near Ground Zero back over the Brooklyn Bridge. Needless to say we were all suffering with the hurt and pain, and yes, fright. And some of us cried. Some of us prayed silently. All day long we had the TV on in the lunchroom, and were being constantly updated on the latest findings. We were again shocked and appalled when the other two crashes occurred. The one in Shanksville, PA and the other at the Pentagon. Finally, when it was time to leave to go home, we looked upward into the sky - not a plane to be found. Since this town of Runnemede is not far from the Philadelphia International Airport, there is always at least one plane in the sky. Nothing. The trip home was somber, with the smell of smoke in the air. The wind had blown the smoke all the way down here to South Jersey. For the next few days, I felt this overwhelming feeling of dread. No planes at night - just deathly silence. The healing process is still going on, but I don't think any of us who are old enough to really understand what happened will ever forget it. I believe this incident has made people more aware of what the really important things in life are. I think more of us "smug "Americans will not be so trusting as we have in the past. I don't think a day has gone by (in my life, anyway) since last September 11, that I haven't thought about what happened that day. I have saved some issues of Time Magazine to give to my little 3 year old grand-daughter so she can get an idea of how that day has affected this country. ....and God has been good to us. JUST THINK OF ALL THOSE THAT LOST THEIR LIVES LIVES, FIRE FIGHTER POLICE OFFICERS AND MOST OF ALL THE PEOPLE THAT WORKED IN THOSE BUILDING, THINKING OF HOW MANY PEOPLE THAT LOST THEIR LOVED ONES, NEVER TO SEE THEM AGAIN YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT IN THIS MEAN A CRUEL WORLD BUT IT LETS ME KNOW THAT WE NEED TO STAND TOGETHER UNDER ONE NATION UNDER GOD and pray for one another, never take prayer away from anything we procede in life. God does make the difference. so my heart still goes out to those who suffered the losses that can never be replaced. my prayers are still with them. and mayGOD CONTINUE TO BLESS THIS COUNTRY.
