As we watched the tv i cant even tell you how awful we felt and then when the second plane hit we started to cry. When we found out it was terrorist related we had such a tremendous amount of grief, anxiety, sadness every bad emotion all at one time. Yes, i am thousands of miles away but i am not removed from the sadness of what happened. Every day, i, among thousands of others, remember 9-11-01 and everyday i hear sad stories coming from children, parents, sibilngs, spouses and im thankful for what i have and i am glad that we hear the stories everyday to keep it fresh. I have never seen this country pull together the way it has since 9-11-01 and i think through continued support from all and a better understanding of others feelings we will emerge an even stronger country. Not only was I going to arrive late for work, but I was caught in slow traffic on Lockport Rd approaching the busiest intersection in Lockport (Transit Rd). While still 3 to 4 miles out on Lockport Rd I was observing three unusual objects in the sky, directly ahead of me. As I neared Bear Ridge Rd. I could clearly see the objects appeared to be "smoke" or aircraft trails. All three were in the shape of an upside-down horseshoe (visualize a U standing on it's feet). As I approached Transit Rd, one hung directly over the intersection. Other motorists noticed them also, including the driver who stopped dead-ahead of me. The other two were now at the two o'clock and 11 o'clock positions. I decided that this unusual event should be photographed and went directly to work to get the digital camera. When I returned to the intersection, the closest one was already gone off and the other two also had changed locations. I estimated that the nearest one to me was about 2-3 miles out, past Akron Rd and that I should get back to work. When I returned to work the radio program was interrupted to bring the first news of the WTC events. Lockport is no where near the tragic events of 09-11-01, nor are these objects in the sky related in any way to those airplanes involved. But,it was brought to my attention later that long ago there was an Irish soldier fighting the English somewhere and that he witnessed similar things in the sky during the battle. He considered it an act of faith or an omen of victory. He did win and so will we. The day that the Twin Towers were hit is was at work like any other normal day. I had just dropped my daughter off for school and took that long hour drive to work in Mankato,Minnesota. My co-workers and I were working on some inventory and then it happened. Some one announced that the towers were hit. I laughed and said you got to be kidding right. They said no do you think I am. Well the frantic panic set in. My younger brother Loren worked only 6 blocks from there. I just asked my manager I might be getting a call as he does work that close to them. The day went on and I didn't hear a word from him. I tried reaching him on his office phone but there was no answer as the phone lines were down. I keep calling and still no answer. I thought well no new is bad news. I called his home and no answer as he lived in New Jersey. Thinking that maybe someone would pick up there on that end. Still no answer. I was frantic with fear and panic and crying in my husband's arms and worrying no able to contact them. Three days went by and Loren finally contacted me and said "Sis, I am ok, and I love you." My heart just starting to pump like wild fire in a forrest fire. I cried and cried. We were chatting and he said that his crew from the volenteer fire department has been taking their turn in helpping with the clean up and also checking to see if a friend of his family was and safe from this terrible mess. After receiving the call, I turned and hugged my kids and my husband. The affect hit to close to home too. My youngest daughter(who is 12 soon truning 13 in November),was traumatized with the whole ordeal. She was as school at the time and not able to find me as I was at work and my husband on the road. She didnt want to leave the house after that. It has taken a whole year or more for her to get back to where she is today. Back to her bubbly little girl that she is. Well all realize how precious life is and how much we have taken for granted. We enjoy life to the fullest now and remembering that life is way to short. So now each morning I give my children a hug and a kiss and tell them that I love them before they are off to school or leave home. I will soon be a grandmother for the first time and hoping to give my grandson the life that he deserves too. My life is changing and enjoy life to the fullest. On September, 11, 2001, I had just driven my children to school and arrvived back at home. When I entered my house, I saw my wife sitting on the bed watching T.V. ( This was unusual) She told me what had happened, that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. I sat down and couldn't believe what I was watching. I was watching when the second plane hit, it was the most ubelievable things I could think of. My first thought after it happened was to get my children out of school. I had two immediate concerns, one is that we live very close to a number of nuclear power plants, and two that I wanted to see them and make sure that they were ok. I called the school, and was told that everything was ok. That morning I spoke with almost all of my friends and we talked about what had happened. The closest I can analogize it to was when we started the Gulf War. Later that day, I was at a community college. From the momement, I walked in there was a erie buzz about the place. It was perhaps the first time, I ever saw the whole student body serious. Everyone was talking about what had happened. I overheard 5 rumors from the walk in the building to class. What I found most troubling was that I was around many kids 18 and 19 years old. My first thought was that if this country is going to war, these boys and girls life's are forever changed by 9/11. Some of them seemed to understand that this event had the capacity to change our world. Tell us your story: My oldest son was at home from College because he was disputing the severity of punishment meted out by the State of New Hampshire for a speeding violation earlier in the Summer. I was at home from my teaching position at South Boston High School where I have been teaching Science for the previous 34 years. My son, David, and I were scheduled to be in Nashua, NH. at or about Noon. I was listening to the news when it was announced that an airplane had crashed into the World Trade Center. I was thinking about a scene from King Kong where a small plane crashed into the Empire State Building. I heard someone comment about what they were viewing in the radio studio so I figured that the coverage must be televised. I turned on the TV and was watching the screen when I noticed a black form coming in from the right hand side of the screen. My first reaction was at this most unfortunate time why would a TV helicopter be taking pictures of peoples' misfortune. "Those vultures". Then, as the "helicopter" went between the Twin Towers and disappeared, I then saw a large flame coming out of the left side of the buildings. I was stunned. Briant Gumble who was announcing what was going on was caught off guide and stated "Hej, did everyone see that? Roll back that film." The film was rolled back and we watched it again. This time it was slowed down and we were able to see that it was a plane. Now both buildings were on fire. I woke up my son and told him what happened. He was very apprehensive about what I said and he came downstairs and we watched further coverage on TV. We left the house about 11 AM and drove to Nashua, NH where we were to report. At or about Noon, after we had a preliminary conference with a State Police Officer, we were all told to report to the court room. We were informed that the Governor of NH had decided to close all state buildings immediately and we were all instructed to leave the building. We went home and watched the rest of the coverage at home. We returned the following Tuesday to report to the Nashau Courthouse. This was a day that no one will ever forget. GOD BLESS AMERICA. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My grandfather, A.C. Scott, was a WWII Vetran. He was in the US Navy stationed in Alaska on the USS Black Hawk. We were very close, both sharing a passion for history. I grew up in his house and spent pretty much the first 16 years of my life under his roof. I can only recall my grandfather crying twice; when he would watch Pearl Harbor Memorials on television and when my grandmother died in 1993. On September 11, 2001, I was a senior at Syracuse University en route to class when the first tower was struck. By the time the world realized the reality of these events, I had this nagging feeling to go to my grandfather and be with him. He was in a nursing home at the time. But I was convinced to stay put where I was as a precaution, no one could imagine the possibilities of what might happen next. As a result of what my grandfather viewed live on television that fateful Tuesday he became severely depressed. On September 23, 2001 he died of pneumonia. In my eyes my grandfather too was a casualty of 9/11. We are only beginning to comprehend individually and collectively the enormity of 9/11. Younger generations for the first time have learned that maybe there is something worthy of the ultimate sacrifice. We are all walking wounded. But when I think of older Americans from the Greatest Generation, it is hard for me to grasp what they have witnessed to throughout their lives. I am sure my grandfather relived Pearl Harbor on 9/11, in more ways than we can imagine. Witnessing first hand the two bloodiest attacks on American soil is more than one could possibly bear in a lifetime. I came in from the beach and showered and dressed for work. I was driving to my office when I heard something about an airplane crashing into a building in New York City. Tell us your story: It was my junior year and I was in my American Lit class doing what we usually do, when a student from the room next door knocked and told us to hurry up and turn on the TV and that the pentagon and one of the world trade towers was hit probably by terrorists. We all watched in disbelief at the screen as millions passed before our eyes. I remember feeling completley shocked and shooken up, it was surreal. For the rest of the day at school the TV was on as we all shared our views and feelings with each other. When I went home it was crazy to see my family all watching the same footage that they discovered earlier that day. My friends and I heard a rumor that gas prices were going to skyrocket and be over $5 a gallon. We ran to the gas station where we found many others waiting in the longest gas line i'd ever seen. Most of the gas was sold out and we traveled to other stations. Once I got my gas the station attendant handed me a special edition newspaper that already had images and coverage of the attacks. I found that to be incredible. I felt upset that the gas station would take advantage of the situation and spike the prices. It was amazing to see how many people had pride in our country and how much it brought people closer. Its really depressing to think that it had to take something devistating like this to bring our nation together. I remember seeing so many flags...everywhere. If I were smart and wanted to invest in stock, it would have been in american flag companies..flags on cars, flags on houses ..flags on shits and hats...you name it. I guess you could say it was flagnominal?? My boyfriend and I were discussing how weird it would be if an actual full-out war began and they had to use the draft. Its really sad that these attacks happened, but things like this happens all of the time over in other countries and to them, WE are the terrorists. We are no different than any other country, not that much better or powerful...we want the same thing...oil. I feel terrible for the people in NYC and their friends and families but no more so than I should feel about the millions of innocent people over seas that are killed by even my own beloved country. I will always have pride in America, but I know that we are not perfect, not even close, not even a little bit, and probably not ever. I remember seeing his face turn pale. He didnt say anything for five minutes. When he finally broke the news, my first reaction was, what is the world coming to? After hearing the reports on the radio and finding out it was a terrorist attack, I became incredibly worried. Seeing people crying, jumping out of windows,not only made me upset but i was angry. Was this person a descendant of satan? Today, almost 3 years after, I am still in awe of the entire event. We need to do whatever it takes to take these hellistic people out. I was 7 months pregnant, my husband works in Manhattan - but not in the WTC. I could not reach him, all the while watching the devastation unfold on tv. I cried so hard, I thought I'd be having my baby alone. I prayed, no, I begged God, to please send him home safe. And He did. For which I am so grateful. Five years later, I still cry at the thought of that day - everytime I see a picture of the WTC, or hear about it on TV, my eyes fill and I can't speak. All the lives lost, all the people above the fires jumping, hanging out of windows. All the people who were almost out, but the buildings collapsed before they could get out. All the rescue workers, there to save lives, and died. And my God, all the families, all the children who are missing a parent. And now, five years later, people who were there to help, are dying from lung problems. My son will be 5 soon, he was born 11/20/01, just 2 1/2 months after that fateful day. And while he will know about 9/11 from history books and movies, I am grateful that he'll never know the fear, the pain, that the rest of us suffer after witnessing this horrible event. One day, a few months ago, we were looking at a puzzle (one of those 3D type that stand up) of NYC. It was dated because it still included the WTC. My son, in all his innocence, pointed to the two tallest buildings and said "mommy, what are those?" I went to answer him and became choked up - it's still so hard to believe.... And so hard to explain! A child does not know the hatred and anger that inspired that attack. I always figured, as the years went by, it wouldn't bother me as much as it did then. How I wish that were true. Once again, I pray that my son never has to witness such an event. If only I could protect him forever.... Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was a junior in high school and that morning all of the juniors had to go to the gym to take the ASVAP test. We also had recruters from the Army, Navy and Marines there. We were in the gym for most of the morning. One of our teachers came and made the annoucement that the Towers and Pentagon was hit by to planes. Everyone got really quiet and I think that a couple of people started crying. They released us back to class and we all watched the news for the rest of the day. A couple of my teachers had family that worked at the Towers and one had a brother that worked at the Pentagon. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It started out like any other day. I woke up, had breakfast and went to school. I was feeling bad that day because I did not have my math homework. About mid way though the morning, the teachers all started to look funny. Eventually, the teachers and pricipal got all of us 6th graders together and told us that the World trade center had been hit by and airplane and that "it was and accident and everyone was fine." We all joked because we didn't think it was serious. The principal should of told us what really happened. Even though I was young then, O still should have known that my dad could of possibly dead. Alot of kids to include myself went home early that day. My mom told me that the pentagon had been hit to but that my dad had called a little but ago and was ok. It was really hard for my mom because she was watching it on tv and then went out towalk the dog. She was about a block down the street when she heard a dull boom ringing in the air. She ran home to the tv to find out the pentagon had been hit. My dad's office was right above where the plane hit. About 20 minutes after he left his office, it collapsed. He didn't exit the builing, he went with others to go look for people and help the injured and possibly dead. He called my mom from ground zero at the pentagon (the garden in the middle) and told her he was ok. He said it was hell on earth. I don't like how i wasnt told and ecspecially how i was lied to by my teachers. It was by far a dumb descision because i had the right as a HUMAN BEING to know. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Its been 1 1/2 years since september 11th and I still have not come to a realization that that all of it really happened. On september 11th I had been living with my aunt and uncle for a few years. I woke up that morning to get ready for school. As I walked past my aunts room I noticed that her t.v was on. So I went in there to turn it off. I noticed that she was awake sitting up in her bed. She told me to sit down and watch the news. She was trying to explain to me what was happening. Being in 8th grade I had NO idea what she was talking about. All I knew was that the Twin Towers were two towers that were really tall...but not much more then that. So when I saw that they were on fire all I thought was " That's a bummer." After not knowing anything that my aunt was trying to explain to me.....I went to take my morning shower. My cousin had knocked on the door and told me that the Pentagon had been hit also. Again, not knnowing much about the Pentagon. After my shower was through, I went back into my aunts room to watch the news. As I had gone into the room the towers were barely standing. Well, the towers collapsed and it still didn't hit quit yet. I went off to school and throughout the day I kept hearing people talking about the Nuclear Plant and what if it were bombed. That frightened be alittle. I recall a lot of students wanting to watch the news but our principal would not allow it to be on. So behind the schools back a few of my teachers turned it on. The next few days is when it really hit me what had happened. All I saw on the t.v was people trying to find out information on someone that was in the WTC. All I can remember doing the next week was crying. I wondered why was it them that died? Why was I lucky to not know anyone who lost their lives? Now I live with knowing how oblivious I was to everything,and how I just blew it off like it was nothing. And the sad thing is that not once do I remember calling any family memebers to tell them I loved them. If I could go back I'd change that. And till this day I think about the famalies that lost loved ones and how many of them were saved. Ni como los familiares que sufrieron las terribles pérdidas. Nunca he estado en Nueva York, aunque creo que algún día iré a visitar esta increíble ciudad. No he perdido a nadie. Tal vez lo único que haya perdido es la fe en la humanidad; o al menos la perdí ese día. El 11 de septiembre del 2001 volvía de la calle, de hacer unas compras, preparativos para un feliz acontecimiento en mi familia; cuando llegué y puse el televisor -cuando allí eran las 08:30 de la mañana aquí era la hora de comer- mi madre y yo no podíamos creer lo que veíamos; en todas las cadenas, todas al mismo tiempo, se veían las mismas imágenes. Mi único nexo de unión con las Torres Gemelas es que una de mis hermanas pudo, años antes, visitar una de las dos y subir hasta arriba, ver lo empequeñecida que quedaba la gran ciudad desde su imponente altura. I know that not being there i cant even begin to imagine the full extent of the horror but on September 11th I was affected, really affected. In Britain we keep a very close alliance with America and a lot of Briton's worked in the trade towers that day- so on 9/11 your loss was ours- we were utterly devastated. I have never been the hating type of person but i cant desbribe how much i hate the people that were behind these unforgivable acts. Life seems so unfair- all the innocent suffer and after that day i seriously doubted my faith in God. I was asking the typical questions, you know, like "Why would something like this be allowed to happen?". In my teen's i remember reading an autobiography about a young girl's survival in a concentration camp in the 2nd world war. One particular part stuck out in my mind- young childen walked past her in 'role call', crying and hugging teddies and looking at her pleadingly for help- they were being sent to the gas chambers and one officer walked right up to her, with the knowledge that she was a devout catholic and said "Where's your God now?" On September 11th and days, even weeks after i did ask where God was and have never really known the answer- It just im so angry that this ever happened. A year on and im still bitter. Osama Bin Laden and all his followers make me sick- hide in caves and get protection from others like the cowards they are- get other people to do their dirty work. I hope and pray that one day, in some way, those people will experience justice in the worst way imaginable because its no less than what they deserve. They have absolutely destroyed people's lives. Families are now incomplete. Children without parents, wife's without husbands, Father's without son's- and the list goes on. It's so frustrating knowing that evil bastards like bin laden and the taliban are still at large in the world and you are totally powerless to stop them.May God have mercy on them because we wont. I cannot put into words how deeply deeply sorry i am for the people who lost their lives that day, on the four flights, the pentagon, and the towers. I had just dropped my husband off at work and was on my way to go shopping at the mall. All of the sudden the radio announcers came on and said that an airplane had just flew into the World Trade Center. It seemed unreal. When I got to the store there was such an empty feeling and everyone was in the electronics section watching the news. We just all stood there, silently, watching. Everywhere you went it just felt so hollow. Even though it happened in the USA there was still a sense of shock everywhere. It still brings tears to my eyes seeing pictures of it. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On Septemeber 11, 2001, it was just another normal day for me. I was homeschooling my child , who at the time was 8 years old. I had gotten her started for the morning with her studies and went into by bedroom for my weekly, some times more often, phone visit with my sister. We were talking while I also had the television set turned to Channel 12 while watching Katie Couric, a favorite of mine. All of a sudden a news report came on and started showing the World Trade Center and a picture of an airplane crashing into it. IT was appx. 9am by my watch. I told my sister to turn it on Channel 12 and she said what is it. I said you are not going to believe it. We both just held the phone and cried while we saw and watched lives and our country being destroyed. To say I was in shock, does not even begin to describe it. My husband at the time was working at USAIWAYS and was stationed out of Charlotte, NC. I told my sister to let me go call him and I would call her back. I went straight to my daughter and told her what happened and said I cannot believe it and I was crying so hard. She said Mom what is wrong? She could not really grasp what had happened, so I said it is awful honey, it is awful. She went back to her studies and I proceeded to call my husband at work, who by that time, had already heard the news of course. But we were not sure then if any USAIRWAY planes were involved. OF course he was in shock also. I then hung up the phone and called my sister back. She was still just in total shock, so I think we stayed on the phone for hours just talking and looking and not believing what we were seeing. I have always been proud to be an American and that day in history made me even prouder. I mourn the loss of lives and the senseless cowardly way the terrorists took them. But, we will stand strong as always and we will not be defeated. I saw, GOD BLESS AMERICA AND GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS. BE WITH THE FAMILIES OF LOST LOVE ONES AND LET THEM KNOW WE LOVE THEM AND WE FEEL THEIR PAIN AND WE ARE ALL SO PROUD OF EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THEM. THEY ARE ALL TRUE HEROES IN MY BOOK. It was early in the day and I'm working on a Good Citizen project for my social studies class. We turn on the t.v and all of a sudden we see a plane crash right into the World Trade Centers. We were all in skock when we then hered that America was under Attack! some of us broke down in tears because some didnt know what else to do. Well we still had school so we went on with our day. My next class was drama and all the kids there cryed. Then our securaty guard came to our class to give a slip to one of the kids. Well guess wht that kid was me.It was a slip saying i was going home.My dad came to pick me and my little brothers from school because he knew what had happened. As we got home we turned on the news and both trade centers were gone. It was so horrible. I even remember what i was doing right then I was finishing my Good citizen project when i thought how can someone do that. I started to cry when the news said that another plane has crashed into the Pentagon. Then another in a field in Pennsylvania. I thought right from then this day couldnt be any worse. The rest of that day was the worse day in my life and I will always remember what happened that day. It has now been one year and i have not forgotten and it will always be a breath taking momement in my life.
