Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The Fire by Randy Sullivan I awoke early on this beautiful Sunday morning following the attack by terrorists in New York City. My first thoughts again turned to the senseless carnage of the previous Tuesday. As I lay there I could hear my son restlessly moving around in his bed. He hasn?t slept well since the great evil of the day that turned our world around and I was hoping that he would begin to settle into his normal routine. But I could tell from the sounds that he was still having trouble. And again I found myself angry that the faceless cowards had brought pain to my son. As I lay there I decided that we should do an activity together that would bring back some normalcy to his life. I would need my chainsaw later in the day and that meant I would have to go up to our land to get it from the shed. I thought perhaps I could take him with me. We could stop at the store and get a little something to eat along the way. The radio in my old truck was turned to a country station as we made the 12-mile journey to the land. Wyatt eating his doughnut and I was sipping my coffee as we went on our way. Then my son said, dad, is that the woman with the cell phone? I wasn?t really paying attention but then heard a woman?s voice on the radio. What cell phone I asked? You know, the woman in the building talking to the fireman. It was then that I remembered the news report about the trapped woman who had called 911 from beneath the rubble. No Wyatt, she?s at home now. I didn?t tell him her home was with the Lord, as the chance of survivors has grown slim. And I knew that the pictures in his mind wouldn?t go away. At least for today. For him, for me or for my countrymen. And I wondered how other parents were dealing with this. The morning was beautiful with the eastern sun still low in the sky shinning through the trees. There was no wind and it was particularly still in the woods. The silence was wonderfully therapeutic and I could tell that Wyatt was enjoying this early morning adventure with his dad. Since we had a couple hours before church I asked him if he'd like me to make a fire in the pit. He was excited about that idea so I did. The wood was a little damp so the fire put out a lot of smoke. As the smoke wafted through the tree's it gave off sort of a misty look. And the sun?s rays were clearly seen coming through the mask of smoke. Wyatt was quite taken with the beauty of it and said, Dad, from now on when planes crash into buildings we will do this. Not quite onto his train of thought I said, do what Wyatt? He said come to the land and have a fire. I asked him why that would be helpful and he said because it's so beautiful that it makes me forget the burning buildings. For the umpteenth time since Tuesday, I held him close to my chest so that he couldn't see the tears rolling down my cheeks and told him that yes, we will do this everytime the planes hit the buildings. We all thought she was playing.Why because i never thought about it why any one would want to hit the world trade center. My teacher turned on the T.V so we can all see and hear what is going on. After new seconds later we saw the pentagon hit. That was when I started to cry. why because one of my friends dad works at the pentagon. I did not know what part of the building his office was on but i just knew that some was not right. After i left school and went home. i called her house to see if her mother was home, but she was not. Two days later we founded out that her father was dead. Died in the plane crash. It soon became apparent that this was becoming a big issue, so I woke up my wife and we watched the news. By this time there had been 3 crashes, flight 93 was in the air, and the two towers were up. This was at midnight our time, and later on 12 September I had to run a major Shell/Rotary/CPA/Government workshop for young entrepreneurs. This was a big affair, with the best accountants and tax experts we could arrange. We had large two large screen projectors for presentation support, and for the 30 minutes "arrival and settling" time, these were showing the news. Time after time the second 767 flew into the WTC. At 6pm I turned that off, and didn't quite know how to start. In retrospect, I belive I was traumatised to an extent, and still wonder, as I board my Monday morning B767, how it was for those people. This was especially so yesterday (11 Sep 2006) ... the only B767 flight from Australia's second largest city to the Nation's capital, on the 5th anniversary of 911, and in the air at the same time. Nevertheless, I'm very disappointed with what America did in the Middle East ... and I say this as an American citizen. I was not convinced about the WMD, and I could not see the justification for attacking Iraq. When I get a chance I watch the Jim Lehrer show which honours the 20 or so people killed in Iraq each day, and I wonder what this is all for. The main thing that disappoints me, and I said this in a letter I sent to the NY Times before the invasion (no ... not published), is the precedents that are being created in the last 50 or so years. My father was at Pearl Harbour, and flew in B24s in the 5thAAF in the Pacific War. Defending the country was the right thing to do. Korea and Vietnam were less convincing arguments. But now we are at the point where we invade a country ... for what reason? Just because we can? As an American child living in New Guinea after the war my vision of my country was that portrayed Norman Rockwell in the Saturday Evening Post. Can America be like that again? No we can't go backwards ... but moving forwards I'd like to see America adopt some old principles of aspiring to be a fairer country internally and externally. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Introduction to the Peace Project book entitled "The Road to Peace, the Road Less Taken." The peace project became a part of my syllabus for the Fundamentals of Design class after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. This visual book is a project exploring peace and peacemakers. I introduced the project by asking my students to define a peacemaker. The class determined that a peacemaker is an active maker of peace in a conflict situation, not simply a peaceful person. A peacemaker uses and promotes non-violent means in the struggle to resolve conflict or fight oppression. Peacemakers are not always political figures. Artists may be peacemakers through the production of visual art, writing, music or performance that promotes peace or exposes oppression. With this definition, we constructed a list of possible peacemakers and each student researched two candidates. The class members practiced working collaboratively and making decisions by consensus throughout this project. During a ?teach-in,? students reported on their candidates and the group approved those that fit our definition of a peacemaker. Students then gathered photographic portraits, biographical information, quotes, and landscape photographs for each peacemaker. The visual book began as a watercolor mural keeping in mind that it would be folded into a Japanese Fold-Out book later. The peacemakers are ordered by geography, allowing for huge leaps between countries and continents, and linked by ?the road to peace? that runs through each landscape. The background paintings represent the site of the peacemakers? work. Students found it especially challenging to blend one landscape into another and coordinate their plans with the students on either side. The motto for this project quickly became ?we can not achieve peace without learning to work together.? Each student was responsible for two peacemakers, but students also worked on each other?s backgrounds when needed. Biographies for each peacemaker aim to provide some background information on the conflict they addressed and the non-violent means they used. Many of our peacemakers received the Nobel Peace Prize. Too many of them were assassinated for their views. Through this project I hope the class members, and the viewers of this book, learned about collaboration, non-violent conflict resolution, contemporary peacemakers and the positive use of propaganda. I was sitting at my breakfast table, hurrying down my meal, because it was time for me to go to work. I heard it on the radio and I immediately turned on the television. I first thought that it was a scene from a movie. As I watch the news coverage, reality set in. I was heart broken and concern. I thought about all the lives that were in that building and the families they represented. How devastating it would be to be in that situation. I knew several people would be injured because the workday was just beginning. Just at that moment the other plane hit the second tower. I was floored. I knew at that point that this was not a stunt or accident, but we were under attack by someone, but whom?. I was fearful for the people in the towers. I could just realize how frighten they were and how many were injured. I continued to prepare myself for work. It was very difficult to move from the television. I prayed for those involved in the incident. As time went on and the news came about the Pentagon and the plane crash in Pennsylvania, I began to wonder what was next. Are there any attacks planned for my city? I then left my home for work. Praying that my city was ok...I phoned my husband to touch bases with him. He was ok. I was thankful. I checked on my children schools. They were ok too?. We I arrived to work, everyone was in amazement as they watched the news broadcast. We could hardly believe what was going on. All sort of debates were going on throughout the office. We could barely get any work done. Everyone was so concerned about our country. I can truly say, ?September 11, 2001 is a day a will always remember and honor the people who lost their lives.?. I was listening to the radio and I heard the news story that a plane flew into the World Trade Center but no other information was available at that time. A few minutes later my husband called me to find out if I heard about the incident yet. By that time I was walking to class. Neither of us knew any details but we both assumed it was a small plane that flew off course. Never in our wildest dreams could we have imagined what would unfold that day. We talked to each other again after class, which was an hour and a half later. By that time he had more information and the other students were starting to find out as well. Classes were being canceled and the halls became complete confusion with people trying to get home to check on their family members. People were warned to stay off of their cell phones so that the lines would be open for emergency personnel access. The drive home seemed like it was taking forever. Like me, the people in the cars around me were listening to the news while they drove home. I looked into the cars around me while waiting at a light and was able to see the anguish in the faces of others. This was a time that none of us would ever forget as we despirately tried to get home, safely. The main thing that I thought about during that ride was all of the children who lost their parent(s) that day and I still think about it today. It will always bring tears to my eyes. Tell us your story: First of all, I'd like to give my condolences to all of those people who lost loved ones and may God have all of the victims in peace. For all of those who helped and volunteered in the aftermath, may God bless you all. You are all true heroes. I remember so vividly where I was and how I felt on that terrible day. I think everybody has such a clear image of that day that it goes beyond saying, it will take a lifetime to forget. I was still in bed when I got a call from my boyfriend whom at the time lived in Chicago. He asked me to turn on the television and take a look at what was happening. When I turned on the television set, and in every single channel there it was! A plane had just crashed into one of the towers. They said it was an accident, then they moved to show the Pentagon. It can't be an accident. A few minutes later comes the second plane. I was so in disbelieve. I started crying, I couldn't believe what was going on. I had chills all through my body. I called my boss and told him that I'd be taking the day off. The second plane crashing into the tower was the worst for me. Seeing how people out of desperation and anguish jumped out of the windows who knows how high up was just terrifying. I had never felt so hopeless as I felt that day. Nothing will ever be the same. That day my whole family stayed home. We didn't do anything other than watch the news. Watch over, and over and over, the planes crashing into the towers. I remember back and although it was exactly one year ago, I can remember very clearly everything about that day. I have a friend who works at the Los Angeles Airport with United Airlines and the first thing I did after I realized that that was one of the affected airlines was call her. Claudia was okay. She wasn't working that day. I thank God for that and pray for those who were there and for those passengers who died on that day. Now, a year later we are still affected by that day. I still get those chills all over my body when I talk about that day. I still think about all of those people who died and those whose lives were affected. I pray for those who left this world as well as for those who stayed and have not recouperated from there loss. May God Bless everyone, living and dead. God Bless America!! Tell us your story: I will never be able to forget the horror I saw when I rounded the corner of Metropolitan Ave. People were staring across the river and my mouth dropped as I saw the towers burning. My hands flew to my face and I called on God. I remember saying to no one in particular "this day will live in infamy like Pearl Harbor" I watched for awhile; people told me it was a terrorist attack. I then went home and put the TV on, only Ch. 2 was broadcasting. I realized that I had to take photographs of this horrendous sight. I took various pictures at different stages crying all the time. After fielding phone calls about my brother who works near the WTC, but was not at work that day, I remembered a third cousin works in the WTC. This cousin was there in 1993 when the terrorists bombed the WTC and he was carried out because he is a parapledgic. To make a long story short, he was carried out, in a special chair he got after 1993 by 9 co-workers who would not leave him there. This was written up in the NJ Star Ledger Oct. 16, 2001. A picture of him being carried is also on photographer Bill Biggerts web site of pictures he took as the towers were coming down. He was killed but pictures were able to be printed from one of his digital cameras. To this day I cannot pass Metropolitan Ave. without looking towards the city and wishing I could wake up from the nightmare. I try to picture the WTC still there. The 3000 souls and those beautiful buildings are lost but never will be forgotten. They live in our hearts and minds forever. Tell us your story: Well I was in the 70th floor of tower one and I heard this loud crash and the tower trembled, so I looked out the window and I saw that there was a humongus fire above so I started to go down the stairs. I was very scared because iI could imagine the people above the level of fire. About 15 minutes later I'm out side because Iused the elevator a one point. So then I went to this guy and he told me that a plane crashed into the tower. And while he was talking, we heard a motor and then I screamed "look" everybody was screaming. So I got inside my car and started to drive off. When Iwas reaching the bridge, I saw the south tower collapse and I just kept on driving,but with trembling hands. When I got into the toll of the bridge, the north tower collapsed. When I got home I watched the news to get more information on what happened and I could not believe what I and other people passed through. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was my second visit to New York City, and my first visit alone. I was there for a NAMIC conference. My flight was supposed to leave Pittsburgh Airport around noon on Monday, September 10, 2001. However, my flight was delayed due to the weather conditions in New York. There was a storm that day. My husband, Kirk, had waited with me; but two hours later, my flight was still not ready to leave. I told him to go home. He wanted me to go home with him. My company was paying for the trip, I can't just not go. Two more hours later, there is a talk of the flight been cancelled. I called Kirk to let him know. He said that he had a bad feeling and that I shouldn't go that day. Maybe I should wait until the next day and take an early flight. However, there is an early event, that I would like to attend, plus, I was worried that if I didn't check into the hotel, I would loose my reservation. Finally, at around 6PM, on September 10, 2001. I finally got on an American Airline flight and left for New York JFK Airport. Upon arriving at the JFK, I had to take a bus to Port Authority Station and from there take a taxi to the Millennium Hotel Broadway. It was 10:30 PM when I got into my hotel room on the 33rd floor. Kirk was relief to hear from me and to know that I had made it. From my hotel room, I can see the big monitor at Time Square. It's been so long since I've been to a big city. It was truly an experience. After a good night sleep, I woke up and got ready for the Breakfast. I met my co-worker and the President of our Chapter at the Breakfast. After breakfast, we gather at the conference hall for the first speaker. I don't even remember the name of the speaker, just remember the topic was something about "connectivity" and how it will change the way we live. Half way through the speech, my co-worker came to me and whispered that a plane had just hit the World Trade Center. The first thing that came to my mind was an "accident". After the speaker finished his presentation, which was around 9 or 9:30 AM. The President of NAMIC came on stage and announced that a second plane had hit the second tower. "Terrorist Attack", that's all I remembered from that point on. We were allowed to leave and call our family to let them know that we were O.K. and that we were suppose to gather back at the hall in 30 minutes to discuss our next step. I turned on my cell phone and saw that I had messages. I knew my husband had tried to call. So, I tried to call him back immediately, but there was no signal. I walked outside, thinking I can get a better signal, all I saw was people standing out on the side walk, everyone with a cell phone, desperately trying to reach love ones. I went inside and got on the elevator to try the phone in my room. In the elevator, two ladies told me that they made an announcement on the news that the Millennium Hotel was hit. I realized that there were two Millennium Hotels, one near the World Trade Center and one near Broadway, which is where I was. I started to panic, because I knew Kirk was. After couple tries, I got through from my room. I could hear the sheer panic in his voice. He wanted me to leave, but I couldn't with everything shut down. He even wanted to come and get me, but there was no way he could get into NY City. I finally calmed him down and told him that we had to meet back at the Conference Hall and I would keep him updated every 1-2 hours. The final decision was to cancel the conference. I was the lucky one that I had hotel reservation, so I had a place to stay. There were some people who came in just for the day, who didn't have a place to stay for the night, and couldn't go home. I offered this couple to share my room, they accepted, but I never heard from them again. I believe they got on a ferry and went back to New Jersey that night. I hope they made it home alright. That night, New York City was the quietest place on earth. There were no cars, no bus, no street vendors, only few people walking around, like my co-worker and myself, who were trying to find a place to eat. (Imagine not able to find a place to eat at NY City!) While walking in the City, I looked to my right, between two tall buildings, there it was, the smoke from the World Trade Center. This was my first, only, and closest encounter to the tragic event. That night, in my hotel room, I looked down the same busy street from the night before. Only to find a deserted island, surrounded by silence and the light from the police patrol. What a difference one day made! The next day, after many tries, I was able to get a train ticket and leave New York. My husband waited for me at the train station with tears of joy and relief in his eyes. One week later, we found out that I was six weeks pregnant with our first child, who is now 5 months old. We are truly blessed! It was during homeroom period when one of my friends that was late to class came in and turned the TV on. I really wasn't sure at that time what she was doing, and then i heard a voice say "a second plane just hit the other world trate center". I was very sad and afraid. My aunt works 2 blocks away from the the twin towers and she called to tell us what had happened. I remember seeing the look on my dad's face when my aunt was telling him my mom was crying, and I was just puzzled. I wondered how could someone do that? What if the people in the twin towers were my family or my friends, what if it were me? My freind Kevin had told us that some planes had hit the world trade center buildings. I thought he was just joking at first, but he kept insisting that he was telling the truth. We only watched the new in world history, because 9/11 will be huge part of history. I remember watching the news every day for the next week, and only seeing the replays of the towers getting hit and collapsing. I even watched in horror as people jumped from the upper floors. Out of this whole insident, fire fighters and policemen have been honored as heros. This event has even inspired me to help those less fortunate who have lost alot more than i have. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I will never forget 9/11/01 I had just had surgery about 3 weeks earlier on my knee. I was returning to the childrens hospital of philadelphia to get my cast and stitches removed and fitted for a brace. I was sitting in on a table while my Dr was removing my cast when his assistant came in and told us to turn on the radio. My Dr. stopped and went over and turned it on. We litened to them as they said that one of the towers had just been hit by a plane. I began thinking oh my goodness! But how? How could the pilot not see the towers? (like it was an accident) ...little did I or any of us know it was not. We then went into another romm to remove my stitches this room had a TV so we put it on and watched it just as the 2 nd plane crashed into the 2nd tower. I began to crry like a baby. I have many relatives in NYC and I freaked out. I later found out over the days that followed that I knew one person that died. The pilot of the plane that hit the north tower use to be a neighbor of mine and moved a few yrs ago to a different neighborhood about 5 min away. TO michael Horrocks We miss you and love you! I had started work at 5:00 am Pacific Time. I was working on the NBC game show Weakest Link. The mean Brittish host Anne Robinson was supposed to be interviewed by I think it was the Today show live via sattelite. Needless to say, all of the TV's on stage were tuned to NBC. At about 5:45 am, the first pictures were shown of the first plane burning inside the tower. All eyes were fixated. No one wanted to look, but no one could turn away. No one could believe what we were witnessing. Obviously our interview was not going to happen that day. But something much more substantial was. Just when we thought we had seen it all, the second plane hit the second tower. I seriously thought I was going to be sick to my stomach. I could only immagine the number of lives that were changed by these events. I called my folk who were deep in sleep in a suburb of the San Fernando Valley. I was yelling "Wake up! Turn on the TV, were under attack!!!" My fater thought it was a joke! He laughed it off and hung up the phone. Only to have my cel. phone ring back a minute later with him in histericks. As rumors started flying as they so often do around Hollywood. There was talk that a plane from Las Vegas was hijacked and headed to Los Angeles. All sorts of crazy stories. Even while all of this was going on, the immages were still on TV, and everyone was watching intently. Then it happened. The towers fell. I had that "sick" feeling in my stomach again. I was surrounded by co-workers, but I felt so scared, afraid, and alone. It was REALLY weird. I know I didn't mention Flight 93, or the plane that hit the Pentagon, but those events did significantly add to the horror and sadness that I felt on September 11, 2001. Early that AM, before I turned on the TV, my husband and I were trying to find a counselor for her at GT. At 9AM (CST), my husband left for work at the Coastal Systems Station. I turned on the computer, and saw that a second plane had hit the Trade Towers. Thinking that this was the second plane, after one from several years ago that, had, in reality hit the Empire State Building, I just dismissed this news item. Then I went to my e-mail, and a prayer request had come in to pray for those at the Trade Center. I immediately turned on my TV to see the first tower fall. I knew immediately that it was Bin Laden, as I am a devout student of history. From then it was to the phone to check on folks that were to fly from Boston that day, my best friend's husband who had been at the Pentagon (as this attack was shown on TV), my daughter in distress in Atlanta, and my husband who had left for work. At least my son was safe at his high school. I reached all of these people and more, who were all safe and sound. Then I felt the terror and fear that most of us felt. What was going to happen next? My husband was sent home, as the Navy Base was closed for civilians. My daughter was isolated on campus, as all had closed. She could not fly home and as a Freshman, had no car. I felt helpless, but watched TV all day. On a happy note, our daughter came home October 4 (the anniversary of Hurricane Opal that devasted our home) to pursue a math teaching career at the University of West Florida! What a joy and much praise to the Lord that we, my husband, my son, my daughter, and myself were together as a family.
