Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was in school in my 3rd class of the day; science. We were coloring earthquake maps and needless to say, we were havin fun. (Even though we were 12 and 13 years old) It was a nice day out side warm and the kind of day you cant wait to get home skip homework and play basketball outside after school. But in the middle of my class i heard the voice of mt proncipal on the P.A system, wich we never do cuz shes always too busy (wich isnt her fault) and has one of the secratarys do it. So the class quieted down right away. She said, ?ladies and gentlemen, the country has just experienced a terrible tragedy.? She stopped to let it sink in. I kind of zoned out after I heard that so I think she said something like, ?4 planes have been hijacked and flown into some of our country?s landmarks, DO NOT and I repeat, DO NOT go outside or watch T.V?. I freaked out. I asked my teacher what was going on, she told me she couldnt tell me beacuse she didnt know. In my 6th class one of my friends Kyle stood on his chair and asked us if we wanted to know what happened. We yelled "hell yeah!" I was scared, I needed to know. "was it in Rhode island? is my family all right? was it in New York? My whole family is there! what the hell!" Kyle told us that the World Trade center was hit and collapsed and the pentagon was hit but it didnt collapse. I knew that my uncle worked close to the twin towers. I disnt know how close so I cried. I almost passed out I was so scared. I went to the nurse told her I didnt feel good and I needed to call my mom. She called for me. Iwas liek is Uncle Douglas and Uncle Keith all right??? She told me that all my uncle saw was the second tower to collapse , collapse and all that was hurt was his mind....(hes scared for life u know)....My Aunt coulndt get a hold of her dad tho( we found him the next day).....My uncle keith was okay because he was taking my new-born cousin home the hospital that day. When I went home I begged my mom to take me to New York so I could volunteer to clean up the site. She told me I was too young. Tell us your story: September 8th 2001- Since my friend Stephanie's birthday was September 10th, we headed out to a local bar to catch a band and have some fun. We had a blast, Steph even got on stage to sing with The Interns! Sunday was my errand day, and my husband and I went out to buy Steph's birthday present. Monday dawned normal as any other day and I went off to work and then Steph and I went to Outback for our normal b-day celebration of Margaritas and Coconut shrimp. We talked about the guys who tried to pick us up on Saturday night, we complained about work, we even discussed the upcoming Sixers season - everything was normal. On September 11th I woke up at 6 a.m. and quietly cursed my husband for his ability to sleep in (his happy hour had run late into the night and he had no pressing issues on this beautiful September day). I headed off to work, did my morning reports and decided to pop into a meeting my boss was having at one of the stores. I was driving the back roads into the city, smoking my cigarette and listening to Howard Stern talk about Pamela Anderson, when they took a phone call from a Stern Show regular who said a plane hit the WTC. I remember thinking "those god damn terrorist are hell bent on destroying those buildings". I flipped to the local a.m. station and listened as the second plane hit. I felt sick. I phoned home and asked my husband for details. He gave me what little he could. I walked into the store and turned on the radio in the back office. I interrupted my boss and told him what happened. He broke the news to the attendees. I remember thinking "this is surreal, everything was normal an hour ago"! When I heard the news about the pentagon, I became visibly shaken, 2 of my brothers work for the government. One works on Pennsylvania Ave and the other across the road from the pentagon. I called home. My dad told me my one brother was fine, he stayed home, but no one had heard from my other brother. I called Steph at her store and she sounded so sad, which I am sure is how I sounded. She told me that they had the T.V. on in the break room and she just couldn't watch anymore. The rest of the afternoon was kind of a blur, I remember eating pizza and watching the news in the break room of that store, but I don't know what we talked about. My mom finally called to tell me that everyone in my family was safe. My boss decided we should call it an early day and we headed out. My husband, Matt, had tried to go to work, but decided to bag it since he was so hung over. I found him in bed, watching the news. I climbed in next to him and thought how sad this all was. We watched the news continuously for the next 4 days. I live by the Willow Grove Air Station and the sound of the planes taking off and landing, a sound I am normally used to, would jar me out of a sound sleep. Matt's cousin got married on September 14th. Matt was the best man. I went to the wedding and came home early, unable to be happy at such a sad time. Steph and I decided that since the president said for everyone to get back to normal, we would indeed go out dancing on Saturday night. We headed out and I thought to myself how much had changed in such a short time - how different I felt. How sad and angry I was! Along with the regular songs this band covered, the popped in a couple of patriotic songs like "God Bless America" and "God bless the USA". As Steph and I stood there singing with our arms slung around one another's shoulders, I thought "everything will be okay.... America will be okay". Almost a year later, I am still not okay. I don't think about September 11th every day. I can sleep through the night and the sounds of the air base are once again background noise. In every conversation I have had this year it seems that September 11th has come up - with my nieces and nephews, my cousins or even a business colleague. As we near the anniversary and I see that terrible footage being played again and again - I think the same thing every time "Oh my god" and tears well up in my eyes. I watched a CNN special the other night on the attacks and cried through the whole thing. Even reading the other entries here has made me cry. So maybe we won't be okay, at least not yet, but we're surviving - and that's a lot! I worked at a small cafe' and it was before opening that day, my boss and I were the only ones in the building. We were listening to Howard Stern as we prepared the kitchen for the days customers and it seemed like another average day until Howard Stern started to report that a plane had flown into one of the buildings of the World Trade Center. Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that someone would DELIBERATELY fly a plane into a building. I even said to my manager "What kind of a moron flys a plane into a building?" At that point I thought that it had been an accident, like what happened in the 1940's when a plane flew into the side of the Empire State Building. But it turned out this was no accident. After hearing more and more reports coming in over the radio, in a span of a few minutes,my manager when into the dining area and turned on the t.v. in there for the customer's use. What we saw when we turned on the t.v. is something I will never forget. The events of Sept. 11 unfolded right before our eyes that day and from that moment on I couldn't turn away. That day at work, not one person came in. We watched t.v. all day long and I continued to do so when I got home that evening. I didn't stop watching until the news channels stopped reporting on it. I don't know if it became an obsession, but I couldn't turn the t.v. off. It became so that I felt that because I hadn't lost a friend or loved one in the tragedy, that I had to atone for it; that by watching t.v. I was in a way there in N.Y.C. and I could share the burden of mourning for those lost. For the months after 9/11 all I did was watch t.v. It's been 2 1/2 years since 9/11 and I've turned off the t.v.. I know that what happened to me during 9/11 wasn't healthy; mentally, but that's inconsequential, because nothing can compare to what was indured by those that DID lose loved ones and friends on Sept. 11, 2001. My boyfiend and I were arriving in St. Louis on the 10th to spend a couple of vacation days there and then on to K.C. to visit his sister. I remember waking up and turning on the T.V. to see what the weather was going to be like, and in my astonishment saw the first plane hitting the tower. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. At first I wondered if this was some kind of weird movie. And then came the reporters saying this had just happened. I was just mortified. I woke up my boyfriend and was telling him what had happened and we both saw the second plane hit the next tower. We were glued to the T.V. until we had to check out if the motel. I remember we both felt so lost. We wern't sure what to do. And then we found out all the government buildings were being closed. We didn't know what to think or what to do! We decided to head for his sister's house so we could be close to family. When we got there everyone was making a mad dash to get gas, it was so crazy! When we saw his sister we were all just in a daze. We couldn't believe what was happening! We all stayed glued to the T.V. for that whole day. In the process we were phoning all of our family everywhere to see how they were. A couple of days later we came home to still be overwhelmed with what had happened. And then all the stories from the people involved started to reach us-- it was so horrible! I think the country was in total astonishment! For many months we followed all the progress that the city was going through. And for the whole year we never went through one day without thinking about what happened to so many people and the lives that were changed forever! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The day starting out to be like any other, I was sitting in my 2nd period World Cultures class. We were given a test that day, and we started to work on it. Soon, a teacher came running into my class, and whispered to my teacher to turn on the TV. As soon as she turned it on, the first thing I saw was one of the towers engulfed with flames and smoke. I didn't really know what to think. As we watched in silence, not really knowing what to do or say, my teacher had tears streaming down her face. I read all the captions desperately trying to figure out what was going on. Soon after the TV was turned on, we watched in amazement as the second plane hit into the other tower. I was stunned, I had never seen something like that take place live. We spent the rest of our class talking about what was happening, but for the most part we sat in silence as we watched all this madness take place. Throughout the day, the teachers kept the TVs on so we could see what was happening, but still went on with the regular lesson plan. I couldn't really concentrate on Trigonometry when the financial capital of the world was falling apart. I got a call later on in the day around 1:00 saying that I needed to go pick up my brother from school, and come home. As soon as I got out to my car, I called my mom, not really knowing what to think. As the phone rang, I kept thinking about what had happened that I needed to go home. When she answered she said, "We can't find Uncle Lewis and Big Lou, you need to come home, in case we need to go to New Jersey." I was shocked, I had totally forgot that my uncle and his father had worked at the World Trade Center. I was at a loss of words and I just told my mom that I'd be home as soon as possible. When I got home my mom was on the phone with my aunt. I soon found out that my uncle's father was running late to work and was just gotten off the subway when the first plane hit. As for my uncle, he was working in his other office across town, so thankfully he was safe. I didn't find out all the details about my uncle's father except that he was in the hospital but in critical condition. When I found out about this tragedy I didn't know how to feel. But when I realized that my family could've been victims in this, in hit pretty close to home. My first emotion was, worry. Next came, anger. How could something like this happen in this day and age? I'm upset about how any human being could have the courage to try and destroy a nation. Us as a nation seemed to fall apart, but we realized that we need to keep our heads up and fight for freedom and justice. I'm saddened at the fact that thousands of people lost their lives, many innocent people doing their job, whether it is a fireman or policemen, or those people at the office for the day. I can't help but feel anger towards everyone in Afghanistan but then when I realized that they were fighting just to stay alive, I knew it wasn't their fault. I'm proud of our country in fighting for freedom, and keeping our heads up. I know that we can get through this terrible time and fight for what's right. I lived in a quintessential mid-town west Manhattan walk-up studio apartment for almost ten years and celebrated a lifestyle similar to the one portrayed through the character Carrie in the early episodes of HBO's "Sex In The City". My company relocated me to San Francisco in May, 2001. I still harbored the acclaimed New York City sassy-girl attitude five months later. On September 11, 2001 I woke up to the radio alarm clock and trudged into the shower (5:40am PT); as usual. I had just gotten out of the shower and left water marked foot prints across the wood floors of the bedroom when I heard KFOG, the local San Franisco radio station, announce that an airplane had crashed into the World Trade Center (about 5:50am). I thought "oh, some rich jerk crashed his private plane into the tower," and continued to towel dry my hair while remembering a story from the prior week about some guy parachuting and getting caught on Lady Liberty's torch. Then the words, "American Airlines flight..." hit my ears like a Yankee fastball. I grabbed the edge of the bureau and stared at the radio alarm clock. The DJ continued, "...commercial airline jet...", "holy shit," I exclaimed and a wave of nausea overwhelmed me. I tried to call my Mother in Yonkers but the phone lines were busy. I tried to call my friends in Queens, but the phone lines were busy. I tried to call my NYPD friend who worked in the Bronx, but, the phone lines were busy. I tried to call more friends in Manhattan, but, the phone lines were busy. I sat half dressed by the phone on the cold wood floor of my converted Victorian apartment; hugged my knees to my chest and cried. I stopped hearing the words on the radio; didn't think to turn on the television. I was naked and defenseless. I couldn't stop the pit of my gut from being ripped out. I automatically picked up the phone and tried to call my Mother again; the phone lines were busy... I didn't need news stories to tell me what I was instinctually feeling. My city had been attacked. My city had been betrayed. I felt isolated and very scared. I felt as if I had abondoned my city; the city that had always stood tall and been a secure haven for me - a single city gal. I became an numb soul thrown into a pit of irrational horror. Nightmares started within a few weeks. I haven't visited home (home to me is still New York City) since moving out here to San Francisco almost a year and half ago. But, I am going in October (2002). I'm hoping New York City isn't going to hold it against me that I had moved shortly before its twins died. Or, perhaps, maybe my relocation happened because New York City wanted to protect my heart; like it always has. Our nation was under attack.To watch the desperation of people jumping from the towers broke my heart. All the people here at work were in tears. As we stood in the bank kitchen we watched in horor as the towers fell to the ground. All the lived lost. All the fathers, mothers chrildren, friends and famliy members. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I woke up early in the morning to go to my 9 a.m. Communications class at George Mason University. I wasn't feeling very well. I felt nausea, for what reason, I did not know. I thought about missing class, but I had a long day ahead of me on Tuesdays. And since school had just started, I didn't want to start of by missing participation points. So, I dragged myself to school. I felt horrible during class. I had a headache and I felt like throwing up. I tried to shake it off, and I still participated in the group activity at hand. We were dismissed from that class at around 10:00 a.m. I stayed behind with the teacher to ask her a question regarding my topic on our first speech. As I was leaving, one of the students from my class came and told my teacher that an airplane had hit one of the World Trade Center buildings. I thought to myself, "Gee, that sucks". Then, I left the room and proceeded to the Johnson Center, where I would wait until my next class, which did not start until 12:00 p.m. As I was walking to the JC, I received a voicemail message on my cell phone. It was from my mom. She had left a message telling me to call her. Her voice sounded worried. I tried and tried to call her in the office, but the line was busy. I got to the JC and I sat with one of my friends. Everyone was in a frenzy! There were monitors in the JC and people were watching the news. Everyone was trying to call their parents. People who had relatives in New York and people whose parents worked at the Pentagon. None of the cell phones would connect. I thought to myself, "What's the date today?". And I realized that it was 9/11. While all of this was going on, I still felt ill, and I couldn't get in touch with my mom, who worked at the World Bank. I did not want to attend my Theatre 210 class at 12 p.m. any longer. But, I also did not want to just miss it. So, I decided to just drop the class. It was a 2 hour and 45 minute class every Tuesday, that I got lazy to go to. Especially with everything going on around me, I really did not want to attend. Since I dropped that class, I went home. I still had a 4:30 p.m. IT 103 class that afternoon, so I still had to go back. As I was walking to the parking lot, my mom calls my cell phone from our house. She got off early from work, since they sent her home. My mom told me that she was calling me because I had gotten test results back from my appointment at the doctor's the week before. I had a mild liver infection. That was why I was feeling sick. So I get home and relatives had called asking if we were alright. My boyfriend who lives in Toronto, Canada had also called me. He got out of school early too. As we were watching TV, the channels kept playing and replaying the image of the planes hitting the Twin Towers. I called the George Mason University Information line and asked if classes had been cancelled for the afternoon. And they were! So, I no longer had to return to school for my 4:30 p.m. class. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Hardin-Simmons University was about to begin the Inaguration of out new college president. A friend of mine stayed the night with me, and we stayed up real late so we did not attend the Inaguration. We were laying in bed just laughing and talking about all differnet kinds of things when my phone rang. You see I was raised in a military family and understand a little differently than most American's about what truly goes on. Both my parents were in before I was born. Mom got an honorable discharge when she had my older brother. We lived in several places, California, Illinois, Oklahoma, Texas and England. So anything militarially I get a little different picture. My older brother in now serving in the Air Force, the same branch my father retired from. Mom called to ask if I had heard the news, we had no idea what was going on. So I turned on the television. She had already talked to Ray, my brother who is stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi. He was base lock down. He could not leave the base untilthey knew what was to go on. The is the same thing that happened when my father ws in the Air Force during the Gulf War. Mom sadi that they told Ray that he needed to be prepared to leave at any time. No one was allowed to take leave or leave the area. My dad said that if he was calleed he would go. My father loves his country and what he did for the Air Force. Even though he has four kids he still would go so that he could serve. I was terrified that day. Not knowing what was going on or what would happen. We stayed in very close contact with Ray to keep up with any news of him being deployed. Dad was never called back to active duty, though he specialities might be needed soon. Ray was deployed on March 2, 2002. We were not told anything but that he was going. Mom recieved an e-mail from him yesterday saying that he arrived and that he was fine. I am kind of scared for him, being over there, but I know that he knows he is fighting for a great cause. Not many people understand what it is like to have someone you care deeply about fighting the war. We as military people get use to having people close to us leaving with barely any notice and not knowing for sure when they will return. Just because we know that it is there job and duty it is still hard. No matter what the circumstance we try our best to keep moving on, keep our head up, and keep living. Tell us your story: I was at work and I remember the receptionist calling on the phone to tell everyone that a plane has just flew into the World Trade Tower. A few minutes later the second plane flew into the other building. I remember how we all stood there wondering what was going on. Then it hit how everyone thought we were under attach. All I could think about was was daughter, who was at school and my husband was away in Maine on a hunting trip. I just wanted to be surronded by my family but I couldn't get in touch with my husband anyhow, but I was able to get to my daughter. That evening all I did was cry and hold my daughter for dear life. How empty I felt that nothing could be done for all those people. I never did get a hold of my husband until a couple days later and I think he was still in shock by the whole incident. Coming home from his trip in Maine he drove through New York and still couldn't believe what he saw. I have lost my sister a year prior who was also very young and I thought I would see life in a different way, but when I saw what happen on Sept. 11, 2001 I will never take life for granted. Life can come and Life can go. Appreciate what you have and hold on till there is no tomorrow. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was getting ready to watch my favorite soap, "Days of our lives." On the channel it airs was all this news commotion. I was confused as to what it was about. When I heard that the towers had been attacked, I was in disbelief. I was dazed by it. Then I listened to the news some more. I began to feel shock and started to weep. I kept thinking, "no, this is not happening. It is not, this is a nightmare and I am going to wake up." I remember calling my husband at work and asking if he knew. He said yes. I kept saying to him, "oh my God. This is really going on out there." I told him I loved him. I told him I was greatful that we were here, safe. I got off the phone and hugged my son. I was glued to the television, in hopes that someone on there would assure me I was not seeing or hearing what I was. The images still stick in my mind. All the pictures. I was not there, but looking at those images, I may as well have been there. So many people lost. People that I never knew, but were my brothers and sisters anyway according to God. People I will never have the pleasure of meeting. People with families left alone. If I have learned anything from this, it is that the American people are strong and brave and it makes me proud of what I am. I will never know what is was like to be there, to see the pain and damage, but I was there in heart and prayer. I will never forget and I may not know the names of all of our heros. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was a senior in high school. It was also the first day of Istep testing for all of the sophomores at our school. I remember walking into my homeroom that morning with the tv on and I watched in horror as the second airplane was about to hit. At first I was very naive and just prayed that they were accidents but the reality was to strong to continue to think that. At that moment the seniors were called into a senior meeting and the rest of the school into their testing rooms or classrooms. At the close of the senior meeting we returned to our regular schedule and at the exact moment that I walked into my classroom the first tower began to fall. See I was also several months pregnant and all I could think about was the fact that my child is going to be entering a world that can be beautiful, but at the same time very cruel and inhumane. My thoughts turned to my unborn daughter and I just prayed that God would bring peace throughout the world because I didn't want my child to ever have to witness such a cruel act ever in her lifetime. I wish I could've done more than pray and give donations, and even though I was in Indiana the impact of the attacks were very strong. And all were broadcasting the horrible news. My cousin Joyce called my Dad and told him to turn on the news. It seems so unreal, it was like this is not happening? how could this happen? and why did it happen? I was listening to one story on the radio where this woman said that her husband was in the building and she did'nt know his fate. I felt her pain, right when she was being interviewed, low and behold her husband appeared. Oh how she sobbed,I could'nt even begin to image how this woman must have felt. But I could feel her pain and agony through the radio. You know it's truly sad that it takes something so devasting to bring people,famlies, friends, and neighbors together. AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL We take so many things for granted here. I mean I know GOD did not! put us, his children here on earth to HATE one another. It's a reason why he put us all here together. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was walking onto the Boston College Bus in front of Huntington Market listening to Imus in the Morning. Imus said that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. First of all, why Imus, I dont like Imus. I thought, What idiot flew his Cessna into a skyscraper? I also thought, Well it isnt the first time some idiot did this, just like the Empire States Building in 1945. I immediately thought it must be foggy in New York, just like it was in 1945. I got off the bus and made my usual walk to the parking garage elevator. Just as I was about to step in the elevator I heard that another plane had hit the other tower. The elevator doors closed and my radio went dead. I looked at an African American student in a yellow jacket with green trim. His hair was about an inch long, curly, and he looked a little like Marcus from work. I remember him being rather handsome. I looked at the radio in his ear and asked, Did you hear that? He look at me with frightened acknowledgement and nodded. I then said something to the effect of, Two planes have hit both World Trade Center Towers. I then remember thinking that wasnt technically correct. One plane hit each World Trade Center Tower, but my mind was competing with the terrorism train of thought that was racing to the surface. Everyone else looked confused, except that man in the yellow jacket who looked at me with the look of knowledgeable agreement. I then walked into the library, put my stuff down, and waited for the call from my mom. Its one of those moments when you know your mom will call; like when a plane engine falls into a Chevron Station Parking lot, or a weapons cache is found in some Chechnyian rebel encampment with batteries bearing the Texaco star. (Both of those are true BTW) My phone rang, we spoke, and I walked down the hall to watch the TV. I didnt work. I just sat in the little old school desks that looked like Mrs. Debbie Sheas classroom with everyone else and watched in silence. I remember this supposedly worldly educated woman who was arguing that this wasnt an act of terrorism. I remember saying something snide like, call a spade, a spade. I took place in a prayer vigil and went home. I sat with Tiziana, my Italian roommate, who lit a candle for each of us and put it in the window. She put an American Flag on the door even though she isnt an American. I thought it was sweet. At some point, Arancha tells me about Basque terrorists. I then spoke with Roger. We talked about Flight 11. How many times he took that flight on a Tuesday morning, because it was cheaper and we were struggling college students. We spoke about how he was going to come out that weekend and would have taken that flight. However, true to form for both of us, we got in some big fight about something that no longer matters. I told him not to come, not that he would have come after the fight we had anyway. I am still thankful that we are hard headed opinionated people; its what makes me love him and what kept him alive. …..then comes a couple of days later…. Im on the phone with my Mom again who says that my appartment is on TV and am I going home. I say yes and I'll call her later. Then my Aunt Vickey calls, so I know I'm looking at a one to two hour conversation. Im walking to my apartment and the way is all cordoned off by this apartment complex. I think it is called the Park Street something or other at the time, but that place had changed names maybe four times in two years. I sit there and wait and talk. I watch the TV cameras. I see a policeman or two, but its obvious that most of these guys are FBI. Then someone tells me that Mohammad Atta lived there. I tell my Aunt. We talk about the strange coincidences of my life. Later that night, I talk with Tizi about that time we were in the Huntington Market (which is/was in a Hassidic Jewish neighborhood) and commented that only in America would you find a Russian owned market with a group of Hassidic Jews, a Roman Catholic, an Evangelical Christian, and two Arab men. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11 I was standing in downtown Berlin in Germany. I was on a global field trip for the University of Cincinnati to study the culture or Berlin. It was my first trip to Europe, my first trip overseas period. We had just gotten done with our tour for the day, it was actually the only short day we had on the trip so we could go off on our own and explore. My husband and I along with two friends had our city map out trying to locate the nearest U-Bahn/S-Bahn (their rail system) and a middle-aged gentleman approached us and asked if we needed any help. We told him happily no and thanked him for asking then he paused since we had replied in German but two of us were speaking English to each other. He asked if we were Americans. We smiled and nodded. His face completely changed and became saddened and sympathetic. I'll never forget his face. He asked if we'd heard. We stared blankly at him. Our hostel didn't have a TV for us to watch and we were up and out on the streets with our lessons from sun up until well after dark. We hadn't heard anything because we hadn't been around anything that would have told us, not even a radio. It was late afternoon there, getting close to dinnertime. We were going to hit one more place we wanted to see and then head back for dinner. Here in the US the attack had just happened and the first news was just being broken to Europe. He told us in German that a New York subway had been bombed or something, there were many people dead, and it was terrorists. He told us there wasn't much news yet, but we should find a TV or radio, it was all over the airways. All of us were completely dumbstruck; we just stared at him like we didn't understand what we had just heard. He even started to try and tell us in English. We startled and nodded telling him we understood, but couldn't believe it. He apologized and wished us well and we stumbled away. Finding the train that took us back to the hostel we found many of our group stumbling in. At first we couldn't believe that someone bombed the subway again. It wasn't until we got back to the hostel that we finally learned what had really happened...and what was still happening. It was mind boggling to sit there watching the sun set as the day here was just beginning, and two hijacked planes were still missing. The hostel had put up a TV on the counter for us to watch, knowing we were there. We all crowded around it with our two professors and guide, who is originally from America as well. Just as we arrived they were just getting footage of the Pentagon. For the rest of the night we were glued to the screen, watching the first images come half way across the world. We even went to do our laundry down the street and it had a small cafe attached to it. We sat in there and just stared mindlessly at the screen. Another couple in there looked over at us and heard us talking in English, again we were asked if we were American. They shook their heads sadly and apologized, saying how sorry they were this happened here and how sad it was. A girl in our group had a brother that worked under the WTC, we found out later that he had been late to work and had survived, but it really brought it home to our group. The most amazing thing was the days that followed though. The outcry and outpouring of love and support brought tears to my eyes...still does just thinking about it. That very night the American embassy was sealed off with a block periphery all the way around, armed guards and everything. Our professor didn't want us going to the vigil that night because he still was a bit worried about the responses. Some of us went anyway. Millions of flowers lined the block all the way around and the piles grew by the hour. Signs were already being posted. By the end of the week an additional corner street had to be blocked off to compensate for the flowers and people that constantly surrounded it in prayer and grief. People lined the streets for miles with American flags waving them in the air and singing our national anthem. People cried and sang together for us. They held a demonstration a two days later. Over 200,000 people marched the streets in support of the US. From what we were told the Berliners love to demonstrate, and this was a large demonstration, even for them. It had only been organized that morning. That is how fast word spread. I couldn't help but snap picture after picture of the signs and flowers. One large poster really struck my heart, it was posted by a group of friends and they had drawn the US and then Germany. They connected Berlin and New York with a large bridge that crossed the ocean and it read Condolences across it. The slogan became "Our deepest sympathy". The Berliners expressed over and over again their anger at his attack and their sympathy for us, saying over and over again that we were our sister country. The night after the attack they put up a condolence book for all the Berliners who wanted to send their sympathy and thoughts. They were supposed to send it here when it was done. People lined up for miles, wrapping the streets. They waited hours upon hours to sign that book. The city finally extended the hours you could come and sign the book and then had to put out several books because they were filling up so fast. My husband and I went and signed the book as well. The group as a whole was interviewed by the newspapers and on several news programs. I collected many of the magazines they published as the days went on. My husband and I and our two friends also eventually went on to explore more of Europe traveling to the south. We visited M?nchen and F?ssen Germany, Venice and Verona Italy. Austria, France, and Switzerland. M?nchen had held their own demonstrations and had a giant cross made out of red roses and white daisies surrounded by more flowers brought by the people as a memorial in their famous square, and that was just one of the memorials there. The Berliners brought me to my knees in humbleness with their love and support. The first images of the world's reactions, which were broadcast much more extensively in Europe than here from what I'm told, were astonishing. The people that poured into the streets in cities all over Europe in outcry and to show their support for the US brought us all to tears over and over again. The day of the attack...I had never felt so alone. I felt angry because I didn't think they could possibly understand. Within hours I couldn't believe how understanding they were, how open their hearts were to us...for us. It was the first time that I not only felt so proud to be an American...but it was the first time I felt I was part of something so much larger than that. I was part of a loving and united human race. It was the first time that I truly believed that maybe one day we really all could be part of one greater good. It breaks my heart to remember and think about the pain that was caused that day, but it continues to amaze me how much good can come out of people when the need arises. It changed my life, it changed my view and respect of life, it changed how I treated people and how I reacted to situations. I'm thankful for what it has taught me and it gives me strength to know that those who died didn't die in vain. They gave not only to their country...they gave something far greater to the world. Totally oblivious to what was happening, I hopped in the truck to go home, expecting to hear the local talk show host who is normally on at that time in the morning. The news of the first plane was just breaking over the air. First reports were coming through that it was apparently a small plane (like a Cessna) and it appeared to be a bad accident. Believe it or not, the station went back to regular programming and said they would keep us posted. I thought nothing of it and put in a CD, listening to music the rest of the 15 minute drive home. When I got there, I flipped on the tv to catch the last hour of the Today Show. Like everybody else in America, I was shocked by what was going on. I called my mom, and best friend who live in a much smaller town then I do. They were both at work and I had no idea what was going on. I let them know that everything in Atlanta was normal, but I would let them know the second that anything changed. At this point, nobody knew if more attacks on large cities were coming, but (looking back) I did something really stupid and went to downtown Atlanta to try and find my boyfriend. I finally found him on the Georgia Tech campus and let him know what was going on. We spent the afternoon glued to CNN, watching in shock as the events unfolded. We went with his roomie to eat at Ruby Tuesday for dinner, but the mood was pretty rotten, and we watched the tv at the bar, as our lives were changed forever by this senseless tradgedy. The thing that sticks in my head the most that day, was the message on the traffic signs in Atlanta. Usually they give travel times and warnings about wrecks, but today, of course was different. They simply said "National Emergency--ATL Airports Closed." I don't know why I was so moved by these signs, but they brought tears to my eyes to see those words, National Emergency. My heart goes out to everyone that was affected that day; whether it be those who were lost, those who lost a loved one, or just those like me watching from a distance. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My roommate knocked on my door waking me up. I sorta stumbled over and talked to him. He said all this "shit" was going down. So I turned on my tv and we both just stood there in our underwear and watched. It didn't really register with me at first. I thought it was some sort of special effect for a tv show or movie. One tower was on fire. The announcer said something about a plane hitting it...it seemed to me like it wasnt that big a deal. I mean planes crash all the time. Then a second plane hit the other tower. My roommate freaked. My frist thought was "dang...I hope this doesnt mess up my plane tickets" (I was heading outta the country to visit my girlfriend a week later). I know that sounds caddy to think that but I'm just being honest. People always say they get this moment of horror or clarity or some profound concept hits them or some crap....but for me it just sorta gradually sunk in through the rest of the day. I went to my classes that day, I remember the campus was empty, I mean like absolutely no one was there, like I was the sole survivor in a holocaust of fear. My first class was religion. Coincidentally the class was mostly a split between jewish kids and arabic kids (Im niether). The conversations got pretty heated, everyone started pointing the finger. Our Prof. sorta just sat back and watched, I think he saw a microcosm in the class of what was happening outside. Everyone angry, everyone scared, everyone hurt. I don't remember being really scared. I live on the west coast and it seemed then (and now) that nothing major has ever happened on this side of the states (knock on wood). But living in south central L.A. you get used to hearing a lot of racket from neighbors, cars, and all the ghetto birds (planes) flying out of LAX. When I got back to my apt I noticed that too. It was eerily quiet. Not one solitary plane was in the sky. I dont really even remembers birds chirping. It was like all of LA was holding its breathe...just waiting like the rest of the country. I remember doing the regular deal everyone else probably did...calling their family just to make sure no one died from shock or whatever. We all went over it to each other, trying to make some kind of sense out of it. Osama Bin Laden's name started coming up on the news and for the first time I felt like a real emotion. They showed his picture and I was truly enraged. I wanted to shove my baseball bat through my tv, when his face was on it. I think if he had been in that room, I wouldve really honestly tried to kill him. I started just harboring this hate you know? Every time the Taliban were shown on tv over the next few days...I wanted to kill them. Arabic people on tv or the streets around my house, it didnt matter to me, I wanted them all dead. Rage doesn't usually discern... But I also felt conflicted. Because, you see, my girlfriend at the time was arabic too. When I went to see her a week later, it was great. She was worried something might happen to me on the flight and totally happy I was with her. When I got to her home, her family was all there, all glued to the tube, like deer caught in someones headlights. They were relieved to see me. Which sorta caught me off guard...cause they're arabic too. Her Dad said he had cried when the towers collapsed. Her mother had prayed for all the orphans and widows. And now they were terrified for their family back home in the middle east. (I doubt any of them were Taliban). They were scared to really go out, and when we all heard about the bus load of muslim kids that got stoned...well I sorta understood their fear. Now I look back on all of that over a year later and I still want some justice for what happened to all those people in New York. But more than that I want people to just take a breather before acting rash. Evil begets evil and shit happens to everybody. I think the question is, how will you respond to it? Ben Laden's plan will only have truly worked if we spread his message of terror. If we act violently, begrudginly, accusingly to others we will only validfy his lies. It sounds cliche...but what if America acted in love? Tell us your story: In 2001 I was a graduate student and teaching assistant at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, I was off on September 11th and had a dentist's appointment at 11:30am that day. I had slept in until I woke on my own around 9:30am. My radio in my room was set to 106.7 WJFK out of Fairfax, VA and Howard Stern was on. Nothing interesting was happening, and not being a fan of Stern's show I turned it off and went back to sleep for a bit. About 9:45am the phone rang, it was my mom who was working at the Damascus, MD Community Library. She had said a plane had hit the World Trade Center and wanted me to turn on the TV to see what was going on. I turned on the Today show and saw one of the towers smoking heavily. The newsreader said it had been a small plane that had hit the tower and I related it to my mom, along with the comment that a plane had hit the Empire State Building and my thoughts that this was just an unfortunate accident. After I hung up the phone, I went back to the living room and watched the Today Show. It was then that I saw the second plane hit. I was shocked. I'm not sure if I said or thought "Oh S---", but it was there. Immediately I called the History Department at UMBC, they had a TV on and Carla the secretary told me she had seen it too. She asked if I was ok and I said I was. We talked a bit more and then I called my mom again. She had just heard the news as well. I was upset almost crying but not quite. I kept watching and then turned to CNN, at about 10 the news broke of the plane hitting the Pentagon. It was almost like being punched, I called Mom and Carla again, Mom didn't know about the Pentagon and neither did Carla. After talking for a bit, I hung up the phone. About the same time I saw the first tower collapse. I was enraged. I was thinking about the people in the building and the rescuers who came to save them and I began screaming at the TV about how whoever had done this didn't give the victims a chance to survive. Sobbing, I went outside to our flagpole in the front yard and lowered our American flag to 1/2 mast and wept. I went back inside and sat down and cried again. I was completely emotionally drained. By the time my dentist appointment came around I knew I was going to be late. I decided to go anyway. Almost out of defiance in order to show that I could live my own life. I got to the dentist and sat down. Everyone looked shell-shocked. After a wait I sat down in the chair and just listened to the radio. The office was going to have to close early since the schools in Montgomery County were closing and folks had to get their kids. After a brief cleaning I heard lots of helicopters and the roar of jets. I had to excuse myself and go outside and look. Ther flying over the town were 3 UH-1 Huey's a blackhawk and an MH-53. I didn't see the jets, but I certainly heard them. They were all heading northwest, towards NW Frederick County and I supose the Raven Rock Bunker complex. Indeed later on it turned out that was exactly where they were going and the passengers in the helicopters were members of the Congressional Leadership. After leaving the dentist's office, I went back home. About 1/2way home I pulled off the road and saw the 3 hueys heading back towards DC. Back at home at around 1pm my dad, who came home after Montgomery County's offices were closed, and I saw the two jets and the remaining helicopters bringing the congressional leaders back to DC. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was preparing for a class that I and two co-workers were going to give that day. My dad called me, "turn on the television", he aid. "Dad", I told him,"remember I'm at work and I don't have a television." He was out of breath and talking quickly, "terrorists have crashed planes into the World Trade Center in New York City. Get out of your building, get out of there." A co-worker was in my office and I quickly told her and another co-worker outside my office heard us and mmediately turned on the radio and attempted to get news through the Internet. Soon, nearly all the 60+ employees on our floor had heard the news as we shared it over cubicles and out of office doors. My dad continued to be anxious for my welfare, since I work in a high-rise building, though only about one-third the height of the WTC towers. I asked him, "Dad, maybe two planes just crashed in mid-air over the buildings." I just couldn't believe that someone had purposefully done such a thing. But as I heard the news from my co-workers and I turned on my own radio, I learned that he was right. I assured him that I would be alright and told him that I loved him before we hung up. Later my brother called me saying the same thing, "Sis, get out of that building, get away from there." I assured him that I was okay and probably going to be okay. It was still incredulous to me that people would do such a horrible thing. Within a few minutes of this, my daughter called me from Ashtabula, Ohio in tears. She had turned on the television to see the second place hit the South Tower. Later, I was so thankful because when I looked at the flight path of United Flight 93, I realized that its flight had been changed from Cleveland, Ohio and probably flew over my daughter's home on its way to its terrible end in Pennsylvania. Today, I realize that people do such things. It is a fact that makes me more uneasy in my work place and, actually, in other familiar places as well. Now I carry my cell phone with me everywhere. I always tell my husband where I am going and when I expect to return. I am more watchful of the people around me and my surroundings, while at the same time, I try to let those close to me, including my co-workers, know that I appreciate them. A few days after the attacks a co-worker came to my office and gave me one of the lovely pewter hearts which her husband had given her. She said she wanted me to know that she values our friendship. I told her that I would carry it with me always as a remembrance of the care we should give one another. Now I know more of the story of why my parents were so worried that day. My dad and brother were talking together that morning and my mother was listening to a local radio station when she heard that a plane had crashed into the 'tower'. She immediately called for my dad and brother to be quiet because since it was a local station, she thought it was my work place. When they learned it was the WTC in New York City, though they were not as worried as before, they immediately recognized that this could happen anywhere. It bothers me that they suffered even one moment of worry and concern for my welfare. My dad passed away in April of 2002. In fact, on September 11, 2001, he was awaiting surgery that would, we hoped, give him more time to live. The surgery was postponed until November 30 and we had over four more months to have him with us. Whenever I think of 9-11-2001, it is difficult to separate my sorrow for our nation and the people who suffered such horrible losses and my own grief at losing my dad, my best friend. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I think how I felt on September 11th was very sad. There were very many innocent lives taken that day. I feel sad about that fact fact that lives were taken & that the terroists feel that they had to do this. I have really had so much more of an apprecation for America & the flag means so much more. The fact that many people turned to God in prayer after this incident is even much more promising. I know many had family members die. In time with prayng to god time will heal & you will see that family member again. I very sad that this happens but i think it also makes realize how important America is.
