Following will be the form letter provided by Amnesty International. I believe that society's perversion of the sex act through television, film and other media hammers a fallacy. This fallacy is that two people of the same sex who are committed to each other and who evoke physical attributes pegged to the gender opposite them, must be gay. And furthermore, based on society's perversion of the role of sex in our lives--again because of the media, also original sin--we assume that they are sexual animals. A story I read during Ph.D. studies in _The New Yorker_ magazine opened my eyes. Two men were profiled. They had lived together for over 30 years and had experienced the same obstacles and rewards of heterosexual couples. Thank God, the article did not detail the frequency nor method of their sexual practice. On that note, though, having been married, I know that ALL couples experience waves in their sexual patterns. In other words, the media's tendency to hammer the fallacy that normal people have LOTS of GREAT sex, distorts the essence of relationships--which is friendship, forgiveness, compassion, caring. That said, I proceed to the evocative writing of Amnesty International, a worldwide human rights movement committed to ensuring respect for the basic human rights of people without discrimination, in support of equal access to benefits under the September 11 Victims Relief Fund for all victims, regardless of sexual orientation or marital status. As you know, the United States has committed to uphold international human rights standards, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which prohibit arbitrary discrimination. America has already shown generosity via charitable contributions. Why should the taxpayer to help the survivors live in luxury? Thousands of people get unfairly killed every year (drunk driving accidents, etc) - they don't get anything from the fed govt - why should these victims. As long as you choose to waste taxpayers money on these survivors - I think the amount paid should be FIXED per victim. That amount should be $500K and $0 for fireman. Why should a homemaker's life be less valued than an executive's life? Why can't the poor benefit as much as the rich. It is entirely likely that the well paid victims probably have great life insurance benefits. Fireman and police victims should get $0 - this is because the govt already pays their salary for life (taxfree) and the DOJ has also promised a contribution for them. DC Dear Mr. Zwick: I want to express my opposition to any effort by the federal government to provide 9-11 victim compensation funds to "domestic partners" of unmarried survivors of the terrorist attack upon our nation. Funds disbursed through the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund of 2001 should only go to the surviving family members of those who died on 9-11. Funds must go to the widows, widowers, orphans, and other blood-related or adopted members of the family--not to unmarried sexual partners of those who died. To provide funds to "domestic partners" is to undermine the traditional definition of marriage and family to include any number of sexual liaisons between same-sex or opposite-sex unmarried couples. Many homosexuals and swinging heterosexuals, for example, engage in sex with multiple partners. Do we provide funds to each of the sexual partners? Where do we draw the line on how many "domestic partners" a person may have?Homosexual activists are exploiting the 9-11 tragedy by asking the federal government to redefine what constitutes a legitimate "family" under the law. This law contains the "September 11th Victim Compensation Fund of 2001."
