Even fetuses and illegal aliens will be receiving benefits under this program. But when it comes to gay and lesbian heroes of the day -- &nbsp who helped bring down the flight in Pennsylvania, NY Fire Dept. &nbsp who died in the line of duty when the first tower fell, and &nbsp who was &nbsp of the plane that crashed into the Pentagon (there are many more) -- we are told the law is the law and no exceptions can be made. How can this be? If September 11 has taught us anything, it's that our patriotism and love of country transcend our differences and unite us all. We were told that September 11 was the day that "hyphenated-Americans" were no more, and rather than being Italian-Americans, African-Americans or gay-Americans, we were now simply Americans, all of us together as one American family. Apparently, that family just got a divorce. The hyphens seem not to matter when our government wants to use our heroism to inspire others, but when it comes time to actually aid the families of those heroes, the hyphens come back with a vengeance, and it seems that some American heroes are now more equal than others. Discrimination is un-American. I am outraged that gay and lesbian partners of those who died on September 11 are not automatically going to receive the same benefits as heterosexual spouses. I do have a title though I am often called "babe" or "honey" I am not sure if that counts though. I am quite sure it would count for something If I were heterosexual, but I am not so I dont know. I guess who you love is much more important to some people than that you love with all your heart. I can tell you this much. I think it is a shame that partners of Gay victims of the sept llth nightmare may not receive the same benefits as those who are straight. I am not an activist in any way, In fact this is the first letter like this that I have ever written. I just think you should know that "babe" or "honey" means just as much when you are gay as it does when you are straight, at least it does to us. It may mean even more to us, We struggle through life first trying to find someone who is like us sexually, and then have to find the person who is right for us. I think it makes our odds of success slightly lower than the average straight person, and so I believe it makes the loss of a gay partner even more crushing.. I dont think that anyone wants to be treated special for being gay, I know I dont. I just want to be treated the same as anyone else. As a retired military officer, it is my strong belief that the fund should be distributed to the injured and to the families, regardless of the composition of that unit, of those that were killed in the attacks. It is imperative that the U.S. Government treat all of the impacted families with dignity and respect and equality. The Justice Department should include among relatives eligible for compensation those who lost their life partners as well as de facto parents or children, without regard to sexual orientation or marital status. Under traditional rules based on lost wages, the survivors of a bond trader earning millions of dollars per year might receive thousands of times as much compensation as the survivors of a dishwasher in one of the restaurants destroyed. Justice requires looking far beyond the last paycheck to the inherent worth of all those killed, so that a high minimum compensation level is set to lessen the disparities. It would be a double blow to the survivors to first lose their loved one and then watch as most of the taxpayer money went to those who were already well off in the first place. The second major issue has to do with recognizing the legitimacy of gay and lesbian relationships and families. Gay and lesbian families are especially vulnerable when one partner is killed. Because the option of marriage is unavailable, these families may find themselves in the traumatic predicament of having to prove that their union is legitimate. Fortunately, both the Red Cross and the State of New York have already announced that they will not discriminate against gay and lesbian families. The Department of Justice should do the same. I am speechless. Please tell me that it's not true - will these victims and heroes not be treated the same as all the others affected by these acts of terrorism? Isn't America better than this? Isn't that what America is all about? Equality and fairness? Where is the fairness in this degradation? How can Mr. Feinberg's fund reward people and their survivors who are here illegally and yet penalize American Heroes and citizens? In an appearance on the Sunday, March 10 broadcast of NBC's "Meet the Press," Kenneth Feinberg, the head of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund (a fund created by Congress and run by the Department of Justice), said that gay partners of the heroes of September 11th will not necessarily be eligible for the same compensation as heterosexual family members who lost their loved ones. According to Feinberg, lots and lots of people will receive compensation under the plan, including children, babies, and even fetuses. And as an indication of how generous the fund will be, even illegal aliens, who aren't American citizens and who are in the US in violation of federal law, will receive benefits. Feinberg even says that the Attorney General has promised that if undocumented aliens come forward, they won't be kicked out of the country, and their employers won't be penalized. "The attorney general, in consultation with Immigration, etc., undocumented aliens who come forward, the families will not suffer any consequences. They are covered by this program. They will get a check. The employer, where we need the economic information about the undocumented alien, will not be penalized," Feinberg told "Meet the Press."" Please, Mr. President, look into this unjust exclusion and bring about a fair and just solution. Effectively letting anyone believe they "deserve" money from the government if a family member is killed. Not saying that 9/11 was not a large tragedy, but families lose loved ones everyday and this should be looked upon no differently.
