Why wouldn't we be considered for the fund since all charities like the New York State World Trade Center Relief Fund is honoring and respecting fiancées and domestic partners? These are the people that lost financial support as well as their lifetime partners. My domestic partner and I have been with each other for 15 years. We lived together for the past 9 years. We were committed to each other as husband and wife. And had a more committed relationship than most married couples. We were together every day, ate, slept and went to work together. He was my lifetime partner and we had planned to grow old together. We believed that a piece of paper didn't mean anything. Why wouldn't you follow the guidelines of international human rights organization, such as Amnesty International? Why are we being punished for living the life we chose? DC Dear Mr. Zwick: I want to express my opposition to any effort by the federal government to provide 9-11 victim compensation funds to "domestic partners" of unmarried survivors of the terrorist attack upon our nation. Funds disbursed through the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund of 2001 should only go to the surviving family members of those who died on 9-11. Funds must go to the widows, widowers, orphans, and other blood-related or adopted members of the family--not to unmarried sexual partners of those who died. To provide funds to "domestic partners" is to undermine the traditional definition of marriage and family to include any number of sexual liaisons between same-sex or opposite-sex unmarried couples. Many homosexuals and swinging heterosexuals, for example, engage in sex with multiple partners. Do we provide funds to each of the sexual partners? Where do we draw the line on how many "domestic partners" a person may have? Homosexual activists are exploiting the 9-11 tragedy by asking the federal government to redefine what constitutes a legitimate "family" under the law. In fact, homosexual activist , writing in Out magazine has openly called for the subversion of the concept of marriage between a man and a woman. He has urged homosexuals to fight for the legalization of homosexual marriages and once legalized to "redefine the institution of marriage completely . . . . to debunk a myth and radically alter an archaic institution. . . . The most subversive action lesbians and gays can under take--and one that would perhaps benefit all of society--is to transform the notion of 'family' entirely." If the DOJ provides funds to "domestic partners," it will be helping accomplish his goal: That of redefining marriage and altering what he calls an "archaic institution." We also oppose September 11th Funds going to the estates of the deceased instead of to their surviving family members. No one can know for certain where these funds will end up if they are deposited in the estate of a person who has died. The person may have willed his estate to a terrorist, racial hate group, or even to an organization like the North American Man-Boy Love Association. No one will know unless each person's will is examined by a DOJ lawyer. The money should go to the surviving family members of the deceased, not to the estate or to the surviving "domestic partner." Saturday, February 02, 2002 8:34 AM Sept 11 fund distribution I've been quite shocked as to how much money has been allocated to the Sept 11th victims. I personally feel that the average of $1.6 M is way out of line and that taxpayers dollars shouldn't be used for this purpose. I don't see how you can pay the Sept 11th people a sum of money like this and then only pay US servicemen who have been killed the $250,000 value of their SGLI. Also, considering that some of the victims of Sept 11th were military families, how can you justify paying them $1.6M and then pay other servicemen killed in Afghanistan OR other wars only the value of their SGLI? To sum things up, I think the level of compensation bothers the average American who is struggling to save enough money to retire someday. Its even more bothersome knowing that the taxpayers are footing this bill and making the Sept 11th families wealthy. In conclusion, I'm not sure that the taxpayers owe the Sept 11th victims any compensation since past victims of accidents, etc... haven't been compensated. Tuesday, December 04, 2001 5:25 PM Help for "ALL" victims of September 11 Dear Mr. Zwick: I am writing in response to the Department's request for public comments regarding the forthcoming regulations for implementing and administering the "September 11 Victim Compensation Fund." I strongly urge the Department to draft regulations that ensure compensation is available to all victims of the attack, including the committed partners and the non-biological children of gay and lesbian victims. It is unquestionable that the devastating grief and economic losses suffered by the families of gay and lesbian victims are no less than that of other families. Just as the terrorists drew no lines in choosing their victims, our country must draw no lines in compensating those who suffered the most personal of losses from these horrific attacks. Many Americans lost their lives on September 11, each of whom left behind loved ones. I urge the Department to honor these bonds by treating the families of gay and lesbian victims as you would any other. To exclude survivors of heroes who were gay or lesbian in unconscionable. This importantly should include the partners and children of same sex unions. They suffer just as grievously for their deceased loved ones as do other survivors, and their need for assistance is just as great. Please do not give in to the importuning of callous homophobic groups and individuals who would have the Department of Justice limit compensation to survivors of heterosexual unions. We were told that September 11 was the day that "hyphenated-Americans" were no more, and rather than being Italian-Americans, African-Americans or gay-Americans, we were now simply Americans, all of us together as one American family. Apparently, that family just got a divorce. The hyphens seem not to matter when our government wants to use our heroism to inspire others, but when it comes time to actually aid the families of those heroes, the hyphens come back with a vengeance, and it seems that some American heroes are now more equal than others. EVEN FETUSES AND ILLEGAL ALIENS ARE COVERED!!! Even fetuses and illegal aliens will be receiving benefits under this problem - heck, you've even promised to overlook federal law and NOT arrest and kick out the families of illegal aliens, nor will they punish American companies that hired illegals in violation of federal labor laws. But when it comes to gay and lesbian heroes of the day - &nbsp who helped bring down the flight in Pennsylvania, NY Fire &nbsp who died in the line of duty when the first tower fell, and &nbsp who was &nbsp of the plane that crashed into the &nbsp (there are many more) - we are told the law is the law and no exceptions can be made. You should be ashamed. These brave "hyphenated-Americans" played a large part in the Sept. 11 tragedy and I'm sure there were many more among the 3,000 victims. When are you going to realize Gays and Lesbians make up an important part of all segments of American life,...Military, Executive, Medical and so on and so on. They deserve the same treatment as any other segment of American Society. I am deep saddened by this news and as a Gay Republican I am ashamed of "my country's" leadership. Thursday, December 20, 2001 12:19 PM Equal Access to Benefits December 20, 2001 Dear Mr. Kenneth Zwick, I write as a member of Amnesty International, a worldwide human rights movement committed to ensuring respect for the basic human rights of people without discrimination, in support of equal access to benefits under the September 11 Victims Relief Fund for all victims, regardless of sexual orientation or marital status. As you know, the United States has committed to uphold international human rights standards, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which prohibit arbitrary discrimination. As you consider rules for administering the relief fund, I ask that you apply basic international human rights standards, and the general principle of equality, by including among relatives eligible for compensation those who lost their life partners, as well as de facto parents or children, without regard to sexual orientation or marital status. The State of New York has already adopted such a policy, granting compensation benefits "on a showing of mutual interdependence with the victim, in recognition that anyone who shared with the victim living expenses, day to day activities and the emotional bonds of family deserves help in this time of need." Many lesbian and gay people were killed in the September 11th attacks. Since then, lesbian and gay surviving partners of those killed have had mixed results in obtaining equal treatment at the local level in the distribution of relief funds by private and state agencies. An inclusive policy on the part of the federal government would help establish an important principle for other such funds. In compensating victims, real justice will be served only when all families - and all types of families - impacted by the human rights tragedy of September 11 are treated with dignity and equality.
