I am totally outraged at the information I've just heard that gay and lesbian Americans will be discriminated against in the administration  of the 9/11 Fund!  I saw Mr. Feinberg's comments regarding the matter on the Meet the Press show March 10.  The excuse he offered that the various states don't recognize the relationships between gays and their partners is simply camoflauge for the real issue.  In his previous breath, he said that the Attorney General had really stepped up in the interest of compassion and fairness to supercede the laws which would bar illegal aliens from participating in the program.  Why on earth would you ignore the laws barring illegals from obtaining benefits, while denying benefits to your own citizens and use the law as an excuse for doing so?! The hypocrisy of this administration on this issue is shameful!  In fact, this nation's hypocrisy regarding civil rights issues is one of the reasons we find so many people around the world who don't like us.  Doesn't the Declaration of Independence say that ALL men are created equal?  Or, does it say that some are more equal than others? Under traditional rules based on lost wages, the survivors of a bond trader earning millions of dollars per year might receive thousands of times as much compensation as the survivors of a dishwasher in one of the restaurants destroyed. Justice requires looking far beyond the last paycheck to the inherent worth of all those killed, so that a high minimum compensation level is set to lessen the disparities. It would be a double blow to the survivors to first lose their loved one and then watch as most of the taxpayer money went to those who were already well off in the first place. The second major issue has to do with recognizing the legitimacy of gay and lesbian relationships and families. Gay and lesbian families are especially vulnerable when one partner is killed. Because the option of marriage is unavailable, these families may find themselves in the traumatic predicament of having to prove that their union is legitimate. Fortunately, both the Red Cross and the State of New York have already announced that they will not discriminate against gay and lesbian families. The Department of Justice should do the same. However reduntant and obviously clear it is to me and the other families involved it is still being misreported and misrepresented. It is perhaps true that you are only a pawn in the larger shceme of things, that your hands are tied by the federal gov't offices including the president's, budget and finance, and the atty general. who should we really be writting to or calling? Here it goes, once again I will state what I know to be as the facts. 1. My husband was murdered! 2. Numerous reports and articles have been put out (but no one in the general public seems to be reading this) stating that the gov't ignored and ignored and ignored warning after warning regarding the threat of terrorist attacks in our country. Ignored the information we had about Al Queda and the Taliban, certainly never shared vital information with the American public. Clinton was too busy with his sexual exploits, impeachment, and keeping the economy going as it was for his approval rating. The incoming Pres. Bush did not seem to prioritize this issue either but he was to my understanding working on some of the issues. It was just too little too late - but mostly because of what was not done during eight years of the Clinton administration. -since the '93 bombing, holes that were supposed to have been closed up in the immigration system never were. -Airline security was suppposed to have been improved according to a proposal by VP Gore but the changes were never put into effect (gee what a surprise especially given that they still cannnot manage proper security even now after Sept.11) -Two of the terrorist were on a known terrorist list yet they came in through INS (how?) and if the information had been properly shared with the airlines at least these men would have been stopped - the whole plan may have been stopped. -Visas had expired on 3 of the terrorists but of course the INS never checks that. -Was it two or three hijackers who came in on student visas and never attended any education institution, but again of course why would the INS be respnsible for checking that? -Moussoui the 20th hijacker was caught befor 9/11 and even with the reason there was to further investigate him it was not done (an issue of political profiling feared? Too much beauracracy to get through? total incompetnece? - Even the man who ran the fight school alerted the FBI that a plane loaded with fuel could be used as a bomb!). -The US had warnings in the spring about a terrorist attack being planned. Was there anything done about that? I don't think so. - My understanding is that NORAD was alerted to hijacked planes initially at 8:10AM, and then again at 8:40 before the first plane hit the WTC but the F15 bomber did not take off until after the first building was hit. -Other screw ups include the miscommunication at the site itself. My husband was in building 2. It should have been evacuated. a man I know told me that as he ran to the towers to find his wife, he was told be a NYPD officer on the street to get away from the area, "go up Braodway, and get out of here as fast as you can, another plane is on the way" he was told. This while my husband and countless others were told the building was secure and to stay put, or for some, to go back up to their offices after making it down. ARE YOU SICK YET? I know I am! AS THE SURVIVORS OF MURDERED INNOCENT VICTIMS WHOM THE GOVERNMENT FAILED TO PROTECT! Maybe you need more. Maybe you need to be reminded that the victims families of Lockerbie received a minimum of $2 million. oh yes, they were able to sue because the gov't did not screw them by so severely restricting the families ability to sue the airlines. You know that is what you did to us. You know the compensation fund was approved as the alternative, that when approved there was upwards of 6,000 victims families factored into the plan and there were enough billions to cover all those victims of which we now know is half that amount. 3. My husband was 35 years old, had a job as a currency trader that paid $60,000 per year. I worked part time. We were a happy family. we loved caring for our twin boys 2 years old, and decided to have a third. This baby is expected in March '02. My husband cared for our family responsibly and took out life insurance. Because of his years of work, he paid into the social security system that now pays my children "survivors benefits" - who the hell do you think wants to be a recepient of that. My husband also put the maximum amount into his 401k so we could have a good retirement package and enjoy ourselves in the years to come. So all of that is to be deducted from the initial figure of around $1.4 - 1.5 million. Shall I mention the other deductions from workman's Compensation. Just between life insurance and the years my children are entitled to the "survivors benefits" that we paid into wipes out more than half of that so called "award". BLOOD MONEY is what I prefer to call it. 4. My life has been ruined. My babies are all going to grow up without their father. MY life who I shared with my best friend, companion, my husband, has been ripped from me. This is what I live with the rest of my life, and the knowledge that this could have been avoided, that my husband and countless others didn't have to die. should I go back to work now. Would my salary of $28,000 pay the mortgage, bills, the live in that I will now have to get with or without going back to work. Should I simply or magicallly find myself a new job that pays what our combined salaries were? Oh wait though, my cost of living has gone up. I suppose I should find a job that pays even more then what we were taking in. See now, I need to have work done in the basement so the live in will have a place to live, then of course I have to pay a live in, I also have to pay for all the services my husband performed - the lawn, house repairs, etc. Maybe I shouldn't get a live in you say. Well then you come to my house at night when &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp gets sick in my bed and as I am taking care of him, &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp falls in the hallway. So there I am with two - 2 year olds crying, one getting sick and crying, I need to wash him down, change the sheets, hold &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp - now add an infant into the picture and you assess whether you can handle that on your own. Should I also mention that my non magical job did not give me health insurance for part time employment. Cobra payments will cost me near $900 per month. Of course many of the families are hoping for some health coverage to come through for us but these are the figures many are now looking at. Even if I went back to work full time approx. $250 per pay check would be taken out for the cost of familly health insurance. A paycheck that still would not be enough to pay for all the existing bill and all the extras I now need to cover! Maybe I should just live off my life insurance until it's all gone. Oh but that's not really a good plan when you have the responsibility of children or retirement in 25 years and there is no longer contributions to a 401k. Oh yes I can speak of retirement because one day when my children are older I will I am sure go back to work. But I still don't think there is a magical job out there for me do you? maybe I should just bite the bullet suffer work a few jobs, leave my kids often. It's what I would have to do if &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp died of a heart attack isn't it? Oh but wait - &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp didn't have to die if everyone out there had done their jobs. Even if half the people had done their jobs! Did I make myself heard to anyone out there? If you are the wrong person to make these points to please foward this onto the the proper contacts. My children are currently receiving my husbands social security death benefits, is that deductd from the fund, if so how since its a monthly amount? Also we receive a monthly check from workers comp, is that also deducted, again how since i get that for the rest of my life? Partners are being denied compensation because they are not married, however, they are denied legal recognition of their union by our government. This is only one more example of the consistent governmental persecution of LGBT citizens in this country which advocates equality and unity. In this particular case, individuals have lost life long committed partners. Thursday, December 13, 2001 9:36 PM September 11th Compensation for Homosexuals To Whom It May Concern; I recently receive the following information in an email from a friend of mine: It has come to my attention that in the next several weeks, the department of justice will be deciding whether or not to include affected gay and lesbian families in the distribution of money from the September 11th terrorist attack. There are numerous gay and lesbian families who have lost loved ones, but because there relationships were not officially acknowledged, they are disqualified for any compensation that heterosexual families are slated to receive. Further, because of this disqualification, several of these families are going to become homeless following the loss of their loved ones. This is a travesty; in this world, where we see and feel the prevalence of hate every day, now more than ever is not the time to discriminate or dispense petty moral judgements. What can you do? Tell the U.S. Dept. of Justice that you want ALL families included in the survivor fund, including gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgenders. the DOJ is soliciting input RIGHT now as to what the protected categories should be - they make their decision in a matter of days, so please write - it will only take two minutes of your time, and it could mean the entire world to a gay or lesbian family struggling with the loss of a loved one in this tragedy. I don't know much about this issue; I just finished up my final exams (I am a sophomore at Washington University in St. Louis) and I haven't had much time to keep up on current events, but to discriminate against homosexuals (or any other group, for that matter) at a time like this is a crime. Everyone has suffered greatly as a result of this tragedy, and everyone should be supported in every way possible. Now is not the time to alienate people because they are different. Feinberg September 11th Victim Compensation Fund U.S. Department of Justice 950 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20530 To Mr. Feinberg: I am writing to urge you to ensure fair treatment for all surviving families of the tragedy on September 11th, including the children and families of low-wage workers and gay and lesbian families. Under traditional rules based on lost wages, the survivors of a bond trader earning millions of dollars per year might receive thousands of times as much compensation as the survivors of a dishwasher in one of the restaurants destroyed. Justice requires looking far beyond the last paycheck to the inherent worth of all those killed, so that a high minimum compensation level is set to lessen the disparities. It would be a double blow to the survivors to first lose their loved one and then watch as most of the taxpayer money went to those who were already well off in the first place. The second major issue has to do with recognizing the legitimacy of gay and lesbian relationships and families. Gay and lesbian families are especially vulnerable when one partner is killed. Because the option of marriage is unavailable, these families may find themselves in the traumatic predicament of having to prove that their union is legitimate. Fortunately, both the Red Cross and the State of New York have already announced that they will not discriminate against gay and lesbian families. The Department of Justice should do the same.
