I don't know who or with what in mind the matrices were created, but it seems rather obvious that the location of the disaster did not even come into their mind when calculating potential economic loss. The WTC hosted the people with the highest potential for increased income. Starting salaries including bonuses are higher than the median income for the entire country and yet unfortunately the numbers shown seem to treat those that had to graduate from Ivy League colleges such as Columbia with degrees in such fields such as economics or other sciences, recruited by such companies as Cantor Fitzgerald as though they had they had the earning potential of a stock person in a local Kmart. Young single people just starting out in life are penalized to such a degree that to a cynical person it would seem that the Special Master found a way to guarantee that we would have to hire lawyers to sue all the parties to the disaster. A 25 year old that at a company such as Cantor starting out with $45K per year is assumed that he would only have accumulated only 600K over the next 38+ years. The $600K is computed based on the published number of $846484 less the $250,000 for none economic loss. These numbers are an insult to ones intelligence and to the people who perished at those sites and will guarantee that very few will avail themselves of this route. At the very least the numbers published are 1/3 what those in the financial industry would have guessed at the low range of economic loss. Wednesday, March 20, 2002 9:18 PM Compensation to the loved one of Gay Victims As a Lesbian who has been in a committed, monogamous relationship for ten years I am outraged that the partners of the gay victims of the 9/11 tragedy will not be offered the same compensation as the families of heterosexual victims. Kenneth Feinberg's reasoning is ludicrous. If gays and lesbians are left out of his program to the extent that their own states don't include them, how does he justify offering benefits to illegal aliens who are being coaxed into coming forward to make claims by an assurance from the Attorney General of the US that they will not be penalized and neither will their employers. Am I missing something or is Feinberg being selective about the laws that will be ignored and those that will be enforced? Personally I have no problem with illegal aliens being compensated. They, like all others including gay and lesbians, who have had to deal with the gut wrenching agony of losing their loved ones, deserve it. My problem is with the homophobia and hypocrisy of our government officials. Under traditional rules based on lost wages, the survivors of a bond trader earning millions of dollars per year might receive thousands of times as much compensation as the survivors of a diswasher in one of the restaraunts destroyed. Justice requires looking far beyond the last paycheck to the inherent worth of all those killed, so that a high minimum compensation level is set to lessen the disparities. It would be a double blow to the survivors to first lose their loved one and then watch as most of the taxpayers money went to those who were already well off in the first place. The second major issue has to do with recognizing the legitimacy of gay and lesbian relationships and families. Gay and lesbian famillies are especially vulerable when one partner is killed. Because the option of marriage is unavailable, these families may find themselves in a traumatic predicament of having to prove that their union is legitimate. Fortunaely, both the Red Cross and the State of New York have already announced that they will not discriminate against gay and lesbian families. The Department of Justice should do the same. I have just learned that the September 11 Victims Fund will "not necessarily" provide benefits to the survivors of gay victims as it will the heterosexual victims.
