I believe the excess funds, after being fairly distributed to the victims, should be set aside into a separate account and distributed in an equitable and fair manner either to costs involved in the administration of required vaccinations to American citizens as pertains to anthrax, smallpox or any other contagious disease suspected to being dispersed amongst our population by terrorists. As I understand it, the costs of any necessary vaccinations is going to run well into the millions, and instead of the taxpayer footing the total bill, the total costs of said protection against these deadly diseases could be absorbed somewhat by any excess funds accumulated from the contributions through the various agencies involved. Monday, January 28, 2002 11:29 AM I am deeply saddened and disturbed by the backlash of comments about victims compensation. It seems as though we are giving the terrorists yet another victory with all this bickering back and forth. While it is true that all of us at one time or another have experienced loss of loved ones, I for one, would not want to walk in the shoes of any of those who lost loved ones or had family members injured in the attacks. The grief and anger would be more than I could bear. No price is high enough to replace the lives of those lost, or mend the shattered lives of those injured. However, the opportunity afforded by this site as a forum for free speech serves as a reminder for me, that our way of life and basic freedoms are something the terrorists can never take from us. We donated as much as we could to help the victims. I am not surprised to hear that millions of dollars had been raised for the victims. I was surprised to learn the government planned on a victim's compensation fund. I do not understand why this is necessary when so much money has been raised through the private sector. I do believe we as good citizens should help the people who need it especially the families who lost their primary provider but I do not believe it is the job of the taxpayer to support those who lost a loved one indefinitely. There are many situations where a loved one is lost due to accident or sudden illness and those affected have to get on with their lives as a matter of survival and there isn't anyone giving them a big payday. I think the government was too quick to come up with this idea without investigating all possible solutions. The thing that bothers me the most is the greed is starting to show. I saw a guest on the O'Reilly factor last night (Wed) and he said that he had lost his brother and his parents had lost their son. They would receive approximately $250,000 as his heirs. I do understand they lost someone that no amount of money could replace but I do not understand parents profitting from the loss of their child. The guest said he wanted his parents to agree to take the money because his father has a heart condition and if the airlines were sued it could take a long time to settle. How can family members that were not being supported by the victim be entitled to a monetary award? Nothing was said during the program to the effect that he supported the family in any way ,so what is happening here? While we have heard many wonderful stories about the victims there are many stories we have not heard. How many families are going to come forward to get a monetary award even if they were estranged from the victim? Has anyone even thought of that? The second example I saw just today in Time magazine. a widow was quoted as saying,"This is sick joke. I'm ready to throw up." The caption said Widow of a September 11 victim unhappy with her proposed compensation of nearly $1.5 million. I was stunned. The American taxpayer is not responsible for what happened but we are going to be paying for it regardless. If compensation is being given to victims of terror lets start with the victims of the Beirut barracks bombing. Then lets move on to Oklahoma City, the USS Cole and the embassy bombings in Africa. Those were all terrorist attacks but there was no outcry for compensation for those victims. What about the young Marine corporal who lost his foot stepping on a land mine in Afghanistan ,is he going to get any compensation? He was in Afghanistan fighting terrorism as a direct result of September 11th. No, he will get some pats on the back, maybe a purple heart and be shown the door. If one United States citizen deserves compensation because of an act of terrorism than all United States citizens who are victims of terrorism deserve it. The victims families involved in the September 11th tragedy should get every dime of the money that was raised for them and that should be enough. If they choose to sue the airlines then so be it. If there isn't any money there they are not going to get any and the airlines seem on the verge of bankruptcy. The victims families should have our compassion, our empathy and our sympathy, but the loss of a loved one does not mean a lifetime of financial security at the expense of others. So if you're putting a dollar amount on one's husband, father, son, daughter, mother, wife, etc. how can one person's love one's life be worth more or less than another. How can someone be penalized for having a pension (which they had to pay for) or life insurance (which they had to pay for). Will the payments they made to their pension and/or life insurance premiums be deducted from this award. Charaties are on a needs basis, this fund should not be on a needs basis, it should be equal for all. The best way to distribute these monies is on a lost wages formula. That's how it would be determined if one was to sue. However, I fail to see why the U.S. government feels an overwhelming obligation to compensate these families to maintain the lifestyle they would continue to have if their family members had not been killed. I know very well that I am not alone in how I feel with regards to the financial compensation the victims from New York are receiving. For one thing everything is about New York. What about the families that died in Pennsylvania? I realize the numbers were greater in New York but the loss of a life is the loss of a life. Even more than that... what precedence are you setting? What makes the loss they suffered any less than that of the Oklahoma city bombing, Pearl Harbor, Bombing of TWA, or any other tragedy where loved ones were lost? I am deeply sorry for their loss. I am one of the many that donated my hard earned dollar to help the cause. But, I do not believe that they have the right to any government funds!! The majority of these families had life insurance and many companies were offering further compensation including health benefits for many years to come. This alone is already more than many other Americans who have lost loved ones have seen. Many lives are tragically lost across the United States every day. Does their life have less meaning just because they were not in New York on that day? What about the homeless, the elderly and the working poor. These people struggle every day of their lives to earn an honest living. Many do not have health insurance. If the government is determined to spend my tax dollars I feel that I should have some say in how it is spent, especially if it is the magnitude that is involved here. If you do not want to help the homeless, elderly or poor and insist on spending more money on New York, would you kindly return it because I could sure use some of it back. Fortunately, both the Red Cross and the State of New York have already announced that they will not discriminate against gay and lesbian families. The Department of Justice should do the same.
