From a woman working at 2 Chase Plaza: Hello everyone, I'm not sure if these attachments will work or not? If they don't, I'll resend them when I'm back in the office on Friday or Monday. These photos are of the lobby of my building the morning of the attacks. I've been to my building now a few times (even though I haven't been in for the whole day yet) and you honestly can't tell how horrible the scene was on Tuesday. Each floor was said to have up to ONE INCH of debris from the vents, and they are ALL CLEAN NOW! Sometimes you can see where the cleaning people missed a spot or corner, but they did a really FANTASTIC job. The smell isn't bad at all when I'm inside, but outside is another story. There isn't a rotting smell like the media would like for you to believe, but a dirty, concrete smell that pierces your nose. I attended a mandatory counseling session on Tuesday and it actually helped to see everyone and hear that we are doing okay (there were about 25 of us in my session, all from my floor - so I knew them pretty well). The site ("ground zero") is really awful. I don't think I can describe how sad it is to see the piles of scraps. I can't imagine looking at that pile if one of my loved ones was trapped within it. The downtown area (the blocks surrounding my building) are very quiet and somber. Everyone passes by you with a forced smile and tears in their eyes. Quite a few people are still limping - again, I can only imagine what their stories might be. Some people in my office are refusing to come back, I'm not sure where they will go or what they'll do, but I can kind of understand their concerns. My building is now the tallest building in the downtown area. We are hidden among some other buildings, but it is still a little scary to know that I am on one of the top floors. Chase is completely re-doing it's fire and safety regulations for the end of this week. They have beefed up security 200%, I now have to wear my badge EVERYWHERE and hold it up to my face when I walk by a guard. FYI - we don't have any assets that will be frozen due to Bush's plan. I wasn't sure how I was going to handle going downtown for the first time, but I think things went okay. I mean, yes, I wanted to cry for the victims and their families, but I also want to live. I don't want to live my life in fear and I don't plan to either. I was spared for a reason, and I don't intend to waste my life fearing another attack. I honestly can't thank all of you enough for all of your support these past few weeks. I felt so much love from all of you and I think that helped me want to be okay with this crazy city. I mean, I have a lot to live for and I have the most amazing people in my life to share my times with - so thanks for helping focus on that instead of feeling guilty that I was spared where others were not. I should be back in the office full time as of Friday, but I am not sure how much work we will be getting done. I am currently in another office today, and will be returning here tomorrow. My commute into the city sucks. It takes me over an hour now and costs $8/day. I think Chase is thinking about how to compensate those who's commuting costs have been changed. They are still trying to see what they can do about that. I must say that Chase has been remarkable through all of this. I am really proud of my company for taking a sincere interest in my mental health through all of this. I really mean that too. One manager was insensitive about giving his people time to deal with things and he was fired because of his actions. Chase is good about putting its money where its mouth is and it stands by its actions. Well, I am already looking forward to this weekend. There is an art and music festival in Hoboken, and I am excited to go. I've gotten together with some friends already and I don't come downtown without a buddy. Most of my team (immediate co-workers) live in Hoboken, so we commute into the city together to ensure that we are comfortable with seeing all this stuff with a friend. I can't tell you how great it was to see most of my colleagues. I guess I didn't realize how important they are to me, and it was nice to be with them again. Okay, I've rambled enough for now. The day after disaster, and I thought I'd share a little more of one New Yorker's experience. That one New Yorker happens to be me. I didn't go to work today. The courts were closed, our phones at my office are still down (again, not because of the terrorist attack), and I didn't feel like doing much of anything. Cathleen and I watched TV for a while, listening to the excited reports of the recovery of only nine survivors. Last night our friend Seth called at midnight to let us know that he was fine. We knew that he worked in a law firm downtown, and I thought that he worked in Battery Park, a safe distance from the WTC. As it turns out, Seth's office window is directly across the street from the Twin Towers. And although he wouldn't have been at his office at 9:00 am, he happened to be in DC yesterday. Meanwhile, one of the doormen in our building is still missing a cousin, the cashier at the local pharmacy knows someone who is not accounted for, etc. I thought that Cathleen and I didn't know anyone in harm's way, and then I received emails from my ultimate teammates that one of our teammates who works downtown had not emailed yesterday to say he was safe (we had all been checking on each other). Later this afternoon I learned that he was fine, but that he literally found himself running for his life yesterday. Cathleen and I found ourselves going a little stir-crazy, so we decided to go for a walk downtown to see what we could see. We walked across 34th Street, and at one point a cavalcade of emergency vehicles drove by -- each one from a different town in Westchester County. The Empire State Building was completely sealed off by police barriers and police tape, and there are police, it seems, everywhere. We turned down 9th Avenue and ran into one of Cathleen's former co-workers, Kelly Cook, at around 20th Street. Kelly was with her brother and her brother's girlfriend. The girlfriend recently moved into an apartment on Greenwhich Street, about six blocks from the WTC. She was now locked out of her apartment because the police were not allowing anyone, except rescue personnel, south of Canal Street. You could get below Houston Street if you had ID indicating that you lived below Houston, but you can't get below Canal even with ID, even if you have pets to attend to. They told us that they saw one woman who went for a run this morning, only to find out that she couldn't return to her apartment when she was done. They were told that people won't be allowed to return to that neighborhood for at least a couple of more days. At 12th Street, Cathleen and I walked further west to West Street which runs along the western side of lower Manhattan. We walked along the bike path there and joined the hundreds, if not thousands, of other onlookers. At the intersection of Christopher Street, a gauntlet of people had gathered to cheer on every rescue vehicle that drove by. People held signs that said "You are our heroes" and "God Bless America." Two guys held up flags, one an American flag, the other a vintage "Don't Tread on Me." We wound our way down to Houston Street, the farthest down we could go. The sight was still unbelievable. The lower Manhattan skyline was still engulfed in a dark cloud of smoke. The Woolworth building would eerily disappear and reappear amidst the smoke. It used to be that you couldn't be that far downtown without the Twin Towers completely dominating your view. Now, it felt like looking in the mirror and not seeing your nose for the first time. We turned back east on Houston and by the time we got to Sixth Avenue we could finally smell the smoke and dust that we had been seeing for 24 hours. It didn't smell like a fire, but closer to what you'd think a collapsed building would smell like. As we continued walking east, the smell intensified at times, and some of the police stationed in that area were wearing airmasks. We passed by trucks laden with scaffolding lining the street for four or five blocks, and dumptrucks and excavators waiting to be used. In a police van, two or three policemen slept in the back seats. A reporter on TV just said "seeing it on TV is one thing, but seeing it in person is another." I don't know. It still seems remarkably unreal. When Cathleen and I returned home, we could begin to smell the smoke in our apartment and we were forced to close our windows. Take the bill passed by the Senate two days after the attack. It would permit police to tape phones and seize Internet records without a search warrant. That would leave Americans vulnerable to even greater evils. "It is something we will all regret down the road," says Timothy Lynch, a constitutional law expert with the Cato Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank. Most threatened is the Fourth Amendment prohibition against unreasonable searches. Does that safeguard have to be scrapped to search airline passengers more thoroughly? No, it doesn't. Airports already use machines sensitive enough to detect a box cutter. Luggage and people are already searched, but these searches don't raise constitutional issues, unless a government is involved. The Constitution restricts only official actions, not private ones. Courts agree that people can't expect much privacy in airports anyhow. What about when police are involved? They usually need a search warrant before raiding a home or tapping the phone. But police seldom have trouble persuading a judge to sign one. The standards are lax, especially when a terrorist is involved. This week America Online (nyse: AOL - news - people) and EarthLink (nasdaq: ELNK - news - people) cooperated with the FBI investigation by providing information about certain subscribers, according to the Washington Post. "This is already constitutional," explains lawyer James Harper, a privacy advocate and former counsel to the House Judiciary Committee. So why waive the Fourth Amendment and allow the government to eavesdrop and seize records without a warrant? Is the Justice Department trying to exploit a crisis for illicit purposes? "Sometimes they take advantage of these tragedies," sighs Lynch, citing antiterrorist laws inspired by the bombing of the Federal building in Oklahoma City in 1996. Sacrificing rights didn't work then and it's dishonest for law enforcement to pretend that waiving civil rights now will work, either. Even if giving up some rights would help some, Americans shouldn't do it. That would be a victory for the terrorists, who sought to destroy a way of life. Even temporary measures tend to become permanent, as the British have discovered since the 1970s, when they waived some rights to thwart bombings by the Irish Republican Army. Giving up rights might even lead the U.S. into autocratic rule--which is what the terrorists want and what the Founding Fathers were trying to prevent when they wrote the Bill of Rights. America is built on a healthy distrust of government power. I didn't come into work on Tuesday, but I witnessed the entire event from my apartment on the 29th floor. I had just taken my daughter to school and while I was outside I heard the first plane coming down the island traveling very low. I went inside to my apartment to find the WTC in flames and then fall down. Even today there is a smell at ADARC from the collapse and wreckage that can't be mistaken. I SAW "TWIN" BUTTERFLIES FLYING TOGETHER TODAY The day after we lost Twin Towers in New York City, I saw "twin" butterflies, exact duplicates of each other, flying closely together, in pure, carefree testimony. Here's my account of what happened: I actually saw the first tower this morning on my way to work as I rounded the Brooklyn Queens Expressway... it was about five minutes after the first plane crashed through, and it hadn't yet even been broadcast on the radio. I saw the smoke and wondered what was going on... I saw glittering particles through the smoke (apparently glass) and the hole at first I thought was a big dark shadow. I was going to call the radio station to see if they knew anything, but in another two minutes when the song on the radio ended they announced "A nightmare is happening at the World Trade Center..." etc. At that point they didn't know it was a terrorist attack. They were speculating about a plane having crashed through and still being inside the building. I was in shock. Then, while I was listening to the radio (the Twin Towers were behind me somewhere so I couldn't see them at this point) the announcers were watching the tv news broadcast apparently and they said "OH my God, ANOTHER PLANE JUST crashed into the second tower... it looks like this is a deliberate attack!" And all of the cell lines were busy - I couldn't get through to my dad, mom, or work... when I got into work all the TVs were on (wer'e only getting channel 2 by the way - the transmission antenna for many of the stations apparently was on the top of the tower). And then when the Pentagon was attacked! And then we watched both towers collapse - live - on tv. My dad and his three coworkers are now attempting to walk east to the 59th street bridge where I can pick them up on the Queens side. My uncle had to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and is heading to my mom's house (if he's not there already) and my other uncle who works down there actually saw the tower collapse and saw people jumping or falling off from floors near the top. It's so sick and so so sad, and what's going to ache later is when all of us New Yorkers see the skyline everyday sans the Twin Towers. This is the single scariest thing I've ever lived through. Arriving late last night from London via Toronto into Newark (NJ) on a severely delayed flight and in the driving rain, I remarked to Tom who was seated in the aisle seat next to me of the two dramatic building out my window. That, I said, was the World Trade Center (WTC), the indication that we were in New York. I was late to work this morning (8:45 am) and, for the first time, I was, actually, just in time. Impact at WTC I was just around 8:45 am when I had to be on the 40th floor of that building for my first day at the new office. As I ran up the steps out the Fulton Street Subway Station I heard a loud boom, a sound like backfire. I looked toward the WTC Bldg and saw workers pouring OUT of the buliding. Looking up, as it was impossible not to see, was the smoke flowing out of floors above about the 90th floor. I work on the 40th floor. At that time, I had no idea that an airplane had created this fire and smoke and thought, "okay, I guess I wont go to work today, they should have it cleaned up by tomorrow". Instead of walking towards WTC, I turned around and walked to a friends office at Trinity and Broadway two blocks away to make a few calls to collegues and friends in other offices on Wall Street: mobile networks were engaged all morning. After finishing the first call I was looking out the window at the fire and saw a shadow at the other Tower. It was then I heard a second large BOOM. Looking up out the window, WTC building II was now on fire starting a lower floor at about floor 60. I darted for the fire stairs. Out onto Broadway debris was everywhere-like a tickertape parade, as if the Yankees won the Pennant again--there was no celebration. I bent down to pick up a few pieces of paper laying in the street: a financial report on consumer products and, ironically, a airline industry report. Walking past Wall Street station I moved my way down to Bowling Green and hopped on a 4 train on route to Grand Central. I was surprised at how empty the trains were. Meeting my friend Bengali half and comforting her at her workplace, we walked home to E72nd street as no bus, subway or taxi was now running. I can only chant prayers hoping that we, as South Asians and as Americans, as I am, are not treated as the Japanese Americans during WWII. As our leaders make world changing decisions over the next few days, I will have to assess what response Suhana and I will take. In any case I am o.k. for now. The voices licensed to follow the event seem to have joined together in a campaign to infantalize the public. Where is the acknowledgment that this was not a " cowardly" attack on "civilization" or "liberty" or "humanity" or "the free world" but an attack on the world's self-proclaimed superpower, undertaken as a consequence of specific American alliances and actions? How many citizens are aware of the ongoing American bombing of Iraq? And if the word "cowardly" is to be used, it might be more aptly applied to those who kill from beyond the range of retaliation, high in the sky, than to those willing to die themselves in order to kill others. In the matter of courage (a morally neutral virtue): whatever may be said of the perpetrators of Tuesday's slaughter, they were not cowards. Our leaders are bent on convincing us that everything is O.K. America is not afraid. Our spirit is unbroken, although this was a day that will live in infamy and America is now at war. But everything is not O.K. And this was not Pearl Harbor. We have a robotic President who assures us that America still stands tall. A wide spectrum of public figures, in and out of office, who are strongly opposed to the policies being pursued abroad by this Administration apparently feel free to say nothing more than that they stand united behind President Bush. A lot of thinking needs to be done, and perhaps is being done in Washington and elsewhere, about the ineptitude of American intelligence and counter-intelligence, about options available to American foreign policy, particularly in the Middle East, and about what constitutes a smart program of military defense. But the public is not being asked to bear much of the burden of reality. The unanimously applauded, self-congratulatory bromides of a Soviet Party Congress seemed contemptible. The unanimity of the sanctimonious, reality-concealing rhetoric spouted by American officials and media commentators in recent days seems, well, unworthy of a mature democracy. Those in public office have let us know that they consider their task to be a manipulative one: confidence-building and grief management. Politics, the politics of a democracy -- which entails disagreement, which promotes candor -- has been replaced by psychotherapy. Let's by all means grieve together. But let's not be stupid together. A few shreds of historical awareness might help us understand what has just happened, and what may continue to happen. "Our country is strong," we are told again and again. I for one don't find this entirely consoling. Who doubts that America is strong? But that's not all America has to be. As I am sure you have heard, four commercial aircraft were hijacked this morning. Two were deliberately flown into the World Trade Center, the third into the Pentagon and the fourth crashing into woodland near Pittsburgh. The first two impacts left obviously plane shaped holes at first in the towers of the World Trade Center as both aircraft were swallowed up and exploded. Both towers completely collapsed within two hours. Virtually none of the 110 storeys remain. Part of the Pentagon was on fire most of the day but is now mostly out. A third smaller World Trade Center building next to the towers has now collapsed. The World Trade Center was hit at 8:45 am and 9:03 am EDT in the morning by two of the planes. This was still early enough that not all of the people who worked in the buildings would have been there. Never-the-less 50,000 people were known to have worked in the towers. The best estimate is that around 20,000 may have been there at the time. About 4,000 are known to have evacuated. So far about 100 people have been taken to hospitals around Washington from the Pentagon. No word on fatalities yet from there. Two of the four hijacked flights were American Airlines flights and the others were United Airlines. A total of 266 passengers were on these flights with a total crew of about 40. One flight from each airline was on route from Boston to LA and was re-routed to New York. An American flight from Dulles to San Francisco was re-routed to Washington. The remaining United flight was from Newark to LA and was re-routed possibly to Camp David in western Maryland but ended up crashing south east of Pittsburgh. Cell phone calls from several passengers indicated that they knew they had been hijacked and were going down. One indicated the seat in which one of the hijackers was sitting thus we should be able to identify one name. A TWA flight taking off from JFK in New York had to avoid one of the incoming aircraft to avoid a mid-air collision. The FAA ordered all domestic flights to land at the nearest airport to clear the skies. All arriving international flights were diverted to Canada. All other domestic flights have now been accounted for. No aircraft except military flights and the President will be flying until at least noon tomorrow. All federal and state government bodies are at the highest state of alert and are involved in the rescue and/or investigation. A state of emergency has been declared in all the states immediately surrounding Washington and probably New York. All government offices and virtually all commercial businesses in and around Washington closed and everybody went home early. People were walking on foot across bridges and along roads out of Washington and New York since they had no other form of travel. All roads in to Washington were closed and made outbound only. All phone and cell phone lines were jammed for hours. The only reliable source of information was television and radio. There has been nothing on any of the television channels all day except coverage of the disasters. Channels normally dedicated to sports, home shopping, and education are now just carrying news feeds. My wife and I live less than 20 miles from Dulles and there is usually a lot of flights landing in the evening. Tonight the skies are silent. The roads are empty. I heard that flights in Canada and England were also suspended or restricted today. Timing wise, a cold front had passed over the east coast yesterday ending several days of overcast grey humid conditions. The sunset last night was a deep red. Today it was a clear blue sky up and down the east coast. Clear enough for the World Trade Center and the Pentagon to be used to send a signal. Apparently tomorrow Osama bin Laden was scheduled to be sentenced in absentia by a federal court for being involved in the World Trade Center bombing in 1993. Today was the eleventh of September - 9/11. 911 is the equivalent to [the emergency telephone number] 999 in the UK. The shock that Americans are now in has been variously compared to Challenger, Oklahoma City and Pearl Harbor. The President is about to give his third address of the day. We hear that Kabul in Afganistan has been hit with rocket attacks. The US is denying involvement in this. At least officially they still not sure who instigated the attacks here. If there was ever a time when the democratic nations of the world could pull together to work on solving the international terrorist problem, the next days and months are it. I'm at Singapore Airport and I guess I was literally taking off from Jakarta when the events in New York began. I'm flying United in 7 hours but who knows what will happen. In spite of that I had a great day in Jakarta and I'm very sad to leave Indonesia and kinda wish I was there right now instead of at the airport. Unfortunately I cannot acces the Business class lounge for United until it opens at 4:30 am. which is the time I can check in. After a lot of hassle I managed to check my two giant bags straight through to Narita from Jakarta while reducing the overweight baggage fee by hundreds of dollars. All this I managed to do in Indonesian. Maybe thats what helped? Emi asked her Mom to make something western after knowing i:ve een eating rice for two months and so chicken kiev it was. I asked her Mom what she called it and I heard a lot of japanese words and then in the middle i heard the word kiev. anyway, i got on the japan airlines flight and it wsnt even full. people whose destination was the US were not allowed on the flight so i guess most people were not just going to tokyo. there were not very many americans onboard and the seat next to me was empty. they woulndt let me convert my united business ticket to buesinsess but it was okay. it was a very quiet flight but i dont think it was because of what had happened but rather because the japanese were just naturally quiet, they didnt have faces of concern like i had so i just relaxed and it was a decent flight. it was an md11, not a 747 to my surprise for th 6 hour plus flight. Each meal got a free little bottle of wine. after i got here, just like last time three years ago, they had to go through my bags at customs. after being travelling for two days via jakarta i wasnt clean shaven. fortunately they didnt go through every thing. i checked my giant bag in for storage but since its so expensive i took my extra heavy bag to tokyo and lugged it around for a long time at shinjuku station which was overwhelming at all the people there running ast me to catch their trains. it was typical jpapanese. the only difference between the packed tokyo trians and the packed jakarta trains was that in jakarta they dont close the doors so that people can hang out andthen they also get on top of the train. anyway, i was so exhausted last nite after barely sleeping at singapore and on the plane that i just had to go to sleep before trying to email. i:m scheduled to fly home on the 24th. i:d much rather be here with people i kno w than in singapore which is so boring even though the foood is so good. but i:@d really rather be back at my little hut in bali. Right now I have all the windows closed and the air condition on with the temp. in the 60's. It's like burnt wire and paper with a little... ummm... I can't place it, but it is so disturbing. Not that it smells everyday, just when the wind is right. I actually have one of those masks. But there is so much asbestos in the air it doesn't help. I panic every night at sundown, because that's when I can see the planes. I went home (Commack) and felt like a coward letting the terrorists have their way with me. Being back I am so unsure, so frightened, my father is the only one who can talk me down from the panic that rips through me. (Right now I can hear the planes working there approach to Laguardia and the hair on the back of my neck is standing on end.) Nice way to live, huh? What you see on the news is sanitized. I am next door to the staging area at St. Vincent's hospital. I have met family of the "missing" and rescue workers. I don't want to repeat their stories. I wish they wouldn't tell me. Because it is these accounts that paralyze me in fear. When family members came up to me and gave me a flyer asking me if I had seen their brother, I didn't know what to do. I just said I would look. Sometimes I feel like I am stuck in this really intense episode of the Saturday morning cartoon, SUPER FRIENDS. Like some diabolical creature has attacked New York City and all these wounded people are walking around in Brooklyn somewhere saying, "Who am I?" "What am I?" with amnesia and the Super Friends are going to save us and round up the amnesia victims and give them back to there families. Something along the lines of, "I would've gotten away with it if it wasn't for you meddling kids." No ... wait that was SCOOBY DOO. Whatever -- you get the point.
