Today at about 12 noon, we flew over New York Harbor and alongside the East River...my first trip back to NYC since the events of September 11th. The past gazillion times I've made this flight, I was always face-to-the-window, eagerly awaiting the fabulous view of Manhattan below. But today, I was hesitant.....I thought it interesting that this time, no announcement was made by the pilot to look out the left side of the plane at the awesome sight. But I had to look....and as I did, my first thought was that the city looked no different than another large, American city...without its signature twin towers, it could have been Pittsburgh, or Cleveland. Even the skylines of Chicago and Dallas, with their own signature towers, Sears and Reunion, had a more distinct skyline than that of today's New York City. Very strange. But as we headed closer to the island and passed over its southern end, my heart sank. A gaping whole, piles of brick and stone....and yes, smoke still rising. I had managed to keep my piece of mind over the past few weeks by completely disconnecting myself from the media and any conversation dealing with the topic of the NYC disaster....but seeing it below me brought back the overwhelming feeling of despair that I experienced several weeks ago. I wiped away the tears as I stared below....and I could see others on the plane doing the same. Walking through LaGuardia snapped us all out of it, as it appeared to be the same, bustling airport of yesterday. Awaiting my cab, the sounds of horns honking and the borough of Queens buzzing around me was very comforting. Heading down the Long Island Expressway toward the city presented me with another, always-anticipated view, the "long" view of Manhattan, with downtown to the left, uptown to the right, and midtown directly in front of me. Again, the view was different. Normally, it's like a giant Alexander Calder mobile....most of the components (in this case, the skyscrapers) concentrated in the middle (midtown) and the right side (uptown)....and way, way, way over to the left, the twin World Trade Center towers serving as giant counter-balances. This time, however, something else caught my eye.....the Empire State Building. Funny how the twin towers demanded our eyes' attention all these years.....pulling our gazes away from the Empire State Building, which is DIRECLTY in front of you. And the Chrysler Building (which has always been my favorite of NYC's skyscrapers). These 2 NY divas seemed like relieved first and second runners up in some past beauty pageant, finally allowed to reclaim their former titles, usruped from them in the 1970's by the twin towers.....yet this time around, they were aged and wrinkled and worn....somehow not wearing their titles very well. But I have to admit...it WAS kind of nice to see the Empire State Building once again the tallest building in the city....standing proud and tall right in the middle of the city....with all the other buildings to her right AND her left bowing in respect. I got a big smile on my face. "You GO, girl!", I thought. As soon as we crossed under the river and surfaced in Manhattan, I asked the driver to let me out early....blocks before my intended destination. I wanted to walk through the city for the remaining 6 or 7 blocks....and I'm so glad I did. The heartbeat of the city was still there....the people were back to business as usual.....I could smell the familiar smells of food cooking on the street, the familiar sounds, the wind blowing down the corridors. The response over here is very similar to yours, including the fear. It's not only the heart of America that has been hit, the heart of democracy, the heart of the western way of life has been attacked. "They" declared war, not only to the Americans but to everyone who shares your (our) norms and values, who value democracy. That's what I sensed over here. Nevertheless the intensity of those feelings will be less than yours - because although TV brings it into one's living room; we still can feel the distance between "us" here and "you" there -- and, it happened "there". I've heard people say they feared an attack here (a plane was still missing), somewhere in Europe. I didn't. I feel a tremendous pain, I feel (still) great disbelieve, I feel powerless - and besides all these different other feelings, I feel "ought" (no way I can describe exactly what I feel except by saying ought); because America (being the most powerful democracy) is enemy NR 1. We, here in Europe, may have the same principles, America will always be the first (and most likely only one) "they" attack. I realize that I am save and that gives me this "ought" feeling; I think it is some sort of quilt for feeling save. Also over here a lot of people are worried about their loved ones - New York is after all an international city. The brother of a friend of mine lives in New York, with his wife. It was many hours later he was able to reach his family (in the Netherlands and France) to let them know they were o.k. The way these terrorists succeeded, their triumph now, makes me furious and sick. Their success will no doubt encourage other terrorists. I wonder what the impact will be, economically and politically. I wonder how America, (and how the entire western world) will respond. The words of Powell were strong and encouraging. Am staying the weekend in Palo Alto - flight to San Diego cancelled. I wasn't going to go anyway - don't feel like flying right now. I will try next Friday instead. As usual, the majority of the new things they are requiring seem to me to be a complete waste and do not add anything to the safety. Whether you check your bag at the curb or at the counter, if you don't scan it with the new international scanners it doesn't help. Multiple checks of photo id's adds nothing - do they really think that these people don't have id's. The govn't is just trying to stop people's fears - the only thing that will make it better is better and more scanning equipment, solid doors and locks on the flight cabin and a policy that the flight crew will not come out for any reason - even if passengers and crew are being killed - the flight crew won't come out and they will land at the first available airport. The rest of the stuff is just a pr effort to make the casual flyer feel safe. Sorry, I just see me wasting so much more time in the airport and for nothing that makes it safer to fly. They have even required the sport fishing fleet in San Diego only allow fishermen on board if they have a boarding pass and photo id and the crew must search each tackle box and cooler brought on board. All boats returning, are stopped at the harbor entrance at Pt. Loma and boarded and searched by the Coast Guard. I know the Naval installations and fleet need to be protected but I think that a "no enter" perimiter with armed gunboats who will sink any boat entering the area not authorized would be a better use of people's time and resources. Anyway, I just needed to get some things out before I completely exploded. Glad to know that you are all safe. Well, I'm so jacked up right now I need to do a little typing. At around 10:15 pm tonight, Cathleen and I were in our living room, watching the ongoing TV coverage when we heard what sounded like shouting coming from the streets below. I went over to our living room window, which overlooks Madison Avenue, and I saw a police car pull up into the middle of the intersection of Madison and 34th Street. Four cops jumped out of the car and started to frantically direct traffic to the east. Other cops were screaming at people to run towards the east. My heart started to pound. One block to the west is the Empire State Building, and it didn't take long for me to realize that something bad was afoot. I turned to Cathleen, who had joined me at the window, and said, "they're directing everyone away from the Empire State Building. Let's get the hell out of here." Oscar, also sensing trouble, took this opportunity to scarf a three-inch piece of camembert off of the coffee table. I grabbed the dogs' carry-bag out of our closet and grabbed my wallet. Cathleen stuffed the dogs into the bag and we left the apartment. I locked the door and we headed for the stairs. When we reached the lobby, we saw Mr. Camacho, our super, buzzing the apartments in the building. The doorman, Sham, said, "you've heard? There's a bomb threat in the Empire State Building." People were running past our doorway. We hauled ass out onto 35th Street and headed east. As we moved, Cathleen and I discussed how the Empire State Building had been sealed off for more than 24 hours and that we had seen bomb-sniffing dogs around the building earlier today. It didn't seem likely that any threat could be real. It also didn't seem likely that this rationale would keep us from moving towards First Avenue. Cathleen's only thought was that this news was bound to be broadcast nationally, and that her mother would have a heart attack. Fortunately, she had grabbed our cell phone and we were able to call and let her know that we were OK. We asked her to call my mom and we kept moving. By the time we reached Lexington Avenue, the streets were fairly thick with people making the exodus away from danger. At 35th and 2nd we encountered a horde of young women from the Stern School for Women (of Yeshiva University) -- can you imagine coming to New York for college and dealing with this? Cathleen and I decided that we might as well just get our car and drive up to my mom's house in Yorktown for the night. We made more phone calls, and Cathleen's mom told us to take her brother Sam with us. Sam is in his second year of college, and he's living at 23rd and Lexington. We made arrangements to have Sam meet us at 23rd and 2nd Avenue. On the way to our garage, we passed by the NYU Medical Center/Bellevue Hospital. It was a scene. Floodlights lit up the outside where you could see that tents and tables had been erected for triage. The garbage cans on the surrounding block were overflowing with medical gowns and the like. I had heard on the news earlier today that Bellevue had treated somewhere around 53 victims of the WTC attack. We finally got our car and headed down to 23rd and 2nd. By the time we hooked up with Sam at around 11:15, Cathleen's mom, my mom and my brother had all called to let us know that the news was reporting that the police had cleared the Empire State Building as a threat and they were allowing traffic to return to the area. We decided to stay in our home tonight, and so we drove back to our garage and parked our car. Back at our building we chatted with Mr. Camacho. He not only had to call the entire building to get people out, but he then had to go assist two elderly women in the building, one of whom insisted on finishing her business in the bathroom first, and the other who wanted to put on stockings before going out in public. Now the winds have shifted north and the smoke has permeated the entire area. It has created a minimal haze, but you can definitely smell it, and we saw many people walking around with masks or clothing covering their mouths. Cathleen and I also realize that we need to start doing bomb scare drills. Of all things, we left the computer disks with her novel on it in the apartment! Needless to say, I'm glad it was just a scare. Oddly enough, I was only scared during the moments when I was looking out at the police in the intersection, watching people running towards the east. Wow...If you had written 3 weeks earlier I could have seen you...I was actually back in Livingston and NY all summer...I needed surgery on my neck from a car accident 5 years ago...I'm better now... Hi Everyone - I've gotten so many message from people (and if I haven't called you back, I will try this weekend - it just takes so long to get home at night), but I wanted to pass along an update of what is going on up here. First of all, everyone in my office is safe. As many of you know, we are across the street from the White House - I can see it from my office. Tuesday was pretty scary. We evacuated when the White House did. I was actually on the phone with my mom when the plane hit the Pentagon. My dad yelled in the background that the plane hit, and I looked out the window and saw tons of smoke. Then people started running through the office saying the Old Executive Office Building and Mall were on fire. They weren't, but there was so much smoke, it was hard to tell. People were running from the White House, and people ran through here saying, "Get out, get out." We dropped everything and left, even leaving our cars. I stuck with two of my friends, and we found one of their dads, who works downtown. After wandering the streets with other bewildered office workers, while Secret Service agents with machine guns directed us, we finally got to the Metro and rode to Maryland to one of their houses. We stayed there until we could figure out where to go, and then took Metro and taxis home. I finally got home at about 6 pm. I could still see the Pentagon burning from my apartment window. We came back to work on Wednesday (I had to take the bus since my car was still at work). Just about everyone had someone they knew or had a connection with that was missing either in DC or NY. Many of our clients are in Manhattan. One of my friends from Theta was missing in the Pentagon, but thankfully, we heard from her yesterday. Her office was destroyed, but she had been out at a meeting. Clients started reporting in - they would update us on their offices and how many are missing. The head partner at our firm has a nephew from Cantor Fitzgerald, which is missing something like 700 employees, including his nephew. Then we found out that two of the planes may have been meant for the White House. We felt very thankful that we were safe and very sad for the people who died instead. Yesterday, there was a bomb threat at the Old and New Executive Office Buildings, the White House office buildings directly across the street. They put our building in lockdown, closed the streets, and brought in lots of police. It turned out to be nothing, but was a little scary with the helicopters and all the police. After that, they broadened the perimeter around the White House. Our office is well within the perimeter. All streets and parking garages are closed - had to take the bus again today. The Secret Service has a checkpoint 3 blocks away, and we had to show ID and business cards to get inside the perimeter. It was a little nerve-wracking going through the checkpoint and walking the rest of the way to work with hardly anyone on the streets except the police, knowing we were in the perimeter. There are places in my heart that ache so badly I wonder how I or anyone can continue to go on, or if anything means anything anymore. I want to give up. Why make movies? Why write about them? What does it matter? But at rare moments of calm and insight, as I attempt to work through these events emotionally, I realize the opposite is true. It is not a time to give up, but to get to work. We need art. We need truth-telling films. We need our artists. Desperately. More than we ever did before. If an independent filmmaker or critic can find any positive lesson in this tragedy, it is about the crucial importance of what we do, and what the best among us have been doing for decades. An event like that of Sept. 11th wakes us and all America up out of the slumber of unreality that Hollywood "entertainment" and most of the media have been wallowing in for the past thirty years. It has suddenly and painfully been brought home to us what a culture of unreality we have been living in. A culture of Rambo silliness. A culture of Titanic teenage sentimentality. A culture of Matrix video game escapism. A culture where the news media devote hour after hour of their time to documenting the sexual misbehavior of politicians, but ignore the real human news everyday. A culture where people seemed to care more about whether the stock market went up or down, than about the meaning of their lives or the lives of others in the rest of the world. To adapt a phrase by Neil Postman, Sept. 11 brings home to us, painfully and embarrassingly, how much we have been entertaining ourselves to death--and how much the unreality of the 3the movies2 and the media has contributed to the irrelevance. We suddenly see how much we have been gorging ourselves on irrelevance, immorality, sensationalism, and escapism. Now more than ever we need artists who will help us to wake up from our sleep of unreality. Who will tell us the truth about our lives, our emotions, our culture, and our world. Painful and hard truths at times; joyous and celebratory truths at others. The task of the artist of the future, like the task of the artist of the past and the artist everywhere, is not necessarily to focus on this specific event or necessarily to allude to it in any way, but to explore the tortured chambers of the human heart and mind that could cause it, as well as the capacities of our hearts and minds to reach out in unbelievable expressions of love and kindness in response to it. We need our artists to help us understand what we are and what we can be. It is time to get on with our work. It matters now more than ever.
