Who did it? Foreign Report presents an alternative
view

Israels military intelligence service, Aman, suspects
that Iraq is the state that sponsored the suicide
attacks on the New York Trade Center and the Pentagon
in Washington. Directing the mission, Aman officers
believe, were two of the worlds foremost terrorist
masterminds: the Lebanese Imad Mughniyeh, head of the
special overseas operations for Hizbullah, and the
Egyptian Dr Ayman Al Zawahiri, senior member of
Al-Qaeda and possible successor of the ailing Osama
Bin Laden.

The two men have not been seen for some time.
Mughniyeh is probably the worlds most wanted outlaw.
Unconfirmed reports in Beirut say he has undergone
plastic surgery and is unrecognisable. Zawahiri is
thought to be based in Egypt. He could be Bin Ladens
chief representative outside Afghanistan.

The Iraqis, who for several years paid smaller groups
to do their dirty work, were quick to discover the
advantages of Al-Qaeda. The Israeli sources claim that
for the past two years Iraqi intelligence officers
were shuttling between Baghdad and Afghanistan,
meeting with Ayman Al Zawahiri. According to the
sources, one of the Iraqi intelligence officers, Salah
Suleiman, was captured last October by the Pakistanis
near the border with Afghanistan. The Iraqis are also
reported to have established strong ties with Imad
Mughniyeh.

"Weve only got scraps of information, not the full
picture," admits one intelligence source, "but it was
good enough for us to send a warning six weeks ago to
our allies that an unprecedented massive terror attack
was expected. One of our indications suggested that
Imad Mughniyeh met with some of his dormant agents on
secret trips to Germany. We believe that the
operational brains behind the New-York attack were
Mughniyeh and Zawahiri, who were probably financed and
got some logistical support from the Iraqi
Intelligence Service (SSO)."

Mughniyeh was the only one believed to have tried it
before. On April 12th 1997, he was reported to be only
two hours away from achieving the highest goal of any
terrorist organisation (until last week): blowing up
an Israeli El-Al airliner above Tel Aviv. A man
carrying a forged British passport with the name
Andrew Jonathan Neumann was in a Jerusalem hotel
preparing a bomb he was supposed to take on board an
El-Al flight leaving Israel, when it accidentally went
off. Andrew Jonathan Neumann was very badly injured
but strong enough to reveal later to the Israelis that
he was not British but Lebanese, and that his
operation was supposed to be a special "gift" to
Israel from Imad Mughniyeh.

A psychopath

"Bin Laden is a schoolboy in comparison with
Mughniyeh," says an Israeli who knows Mughniyeh . "The
guy is a genius, someone who refined the art of
terrorism to its utmost level. We studied him and
reached the conclusion that he is a clinical
psychopath motivated by uncontrollable psychological
reasons, which we have given up trying to understand.
The killing of his two brothers by the Americans only
inflamed his strong motivation."

Experts on Iraq and Saddam Hussein also believe that
Iraq was the state behind the two terror masterminds.
"In recent months, there was a change, and Iraq
decided to get into the terror business. On July 7th,
they tried for the first time to send a suicide
bomber, trained in Baghdad, to blow up Tel Aviv
airport (Foreign Report No. 2651)."

Our sources believe that it will be very difficult to
get to the bottom of this unprecedented terror
operation. However, they believe the chief of the
Iraqi SSO is Qusai Hussein, the dictators son, and
his organisation is the most likely to have been
involved.

Mughniyeh, 48, is a "sick man", says an intelligence
officer who was in charge of his file. He is
considered by Western intelligence agencies as the
most dangerous active terrorist today. He is wanted by
several governments and the Americans have put a $2m
reward on his head.

[Detailed list of Mughniyeh operations removed for
Non-Subscriber Extract]

It was the assassination of one man in March 1984 that
is said to have made Mughniyeh the CIAs most wanted
terrorist. Mughniyeh allegedly kidnapped the head of
the CIA station in Beirut, William Buckley. The
kidnapping triggered what later became known as
Irangate, when the Americans tried to exchange
Buckley (and others) with arms for Iran. However, the
attempt ended in a fiasco. By one unconfirmed account,
Mughniyeh tortured and killed Buckley with his own
hands.

A year later, in a combined CIA/Mossad operation, a
powerful car bomb went off at the entrance to the
house of Hizbullahs spiritual leader, Sheikh Muhammad
Hussein Fadlallah. Seventy-five people were killed.
One of them was his brother. Hunted by the CIA and the
Mossad, Mughniyeh hid in Iran.

In February 1992, Israeli helicopter gunships attacked
the convoy of the then head of Hizbullah, Sheikh Abas
Musawi, in South Lebanon. Musawi, his wife and
children were killed and the revenge attack followed a
month later. According to press reports, Mughniyeh was
called back into action and, in a well-planned and
devastating attack, his people blew up the Israeli
embassy in Argentina. The building was demolished and
92 were killed. Only last year, after a long
investigation, did Argentina issue a warrant for
Mughniyehs arrest.

The reprisal for the attack in Argentina came in
December 1994, when a car bomb went off in a southern
Shiite suburb of Beirut. Four people were killed. One
of them was called Mughniyeh, but to the deep
disappointment of those Israelis who planted the bomb
it was the wrong one. Mughniyehs life was saved, but
his other brother Fuad was killed. Mughniyeh waited
for his opportunity for revenge.

Our Israeli sources claim to see Mughniyehs signature
on the wreckage in New York and Washington. How to
counter this kind of terrorism? "To fight these
bastards you dont need a military attack," said an
experienced Israeli commando officer. "You only need
to adopt Israels assassination policy."

Subject: What's the right punishment?

What to do about Osama bin Laden? The problem is, what do you do with him
once he's found?
Kill him -- he becomes a martyr ...
Don't kill him -- he's a hero to the extremists ...

Solution:
Capture him alive, convict him of his crimes, and sentence him to his
punishment.
What punishment, you ask?
A full blown sex change of course!
And then send him back to his home of Afghanistan to live out the rest of
his life as a woman under the Taliban government....

<text> Sorry- left out the subject header the first time I sent this.

> 9/12/01 - I wrote this during the afternoon yesterday but was not able
> to send it because the phone lines are screwed up and I can't connect to
> the internet. Sorry if the formatting is off - I'm sending this from work
> from a different email program. I made it in at 3PM today, although the
> office is pretty empty. The wind has changed, and now there is a choking
> acrid smoke all over my area downtown, as well as up here in midtown on
> the 22nd floor.
> -------------------------------------
>
> 9/11/01 - Just wanted to let everyone know we're OK after this
> incomprehensible devastation that has been wrought.
>
> As you know, we live about a mile from the World Trade Center. At 8:45
> this
> morning I was getting ready to go out, first to vote in today's mayoral
> primary election (which has now been called off) and then to work in
> midtown.
>
> I heard a plane pass over our apartment building, very low and loud -- I
> remember thinking it sounded wrong -- then 10 seconds later I heard a
> BOOM. You know the rest. I saw the second crash live on TV. From the
> tapes, you can see that both planes essentially went right *through* the
> buildings.
>
> Standing out in Washington Square Park, people were in a daze, some
> crying. You could see the flames flaring up from the WTC and the huge
> billow of smoke blowing east. It's still billowing now (6:45 PM).
>
> I went back to the park after hearing that the south tower (which was
> actually the
> second one to be hit) had actually collapsed. It was so surreal to see
> that only
> one tower was still standing. People going through unimaginable hell.
> Then we
> saw the second collapse with our own eyes -- it was unbelievable.
> There is really nothing left of the buildings at all, all the way to the
> ground. The heat
> must have buckled the buildings' steel columns, and those 40-50 story
> segments
> crushed the rest.
>
> After the first collapse but before the second, one of the local crazy
> drunk guys
> in the park was standing on a pedestal next to the fountain screaming
> "Judgment!
> Judgment!". Everyone else was yelling "Shut up!" and "Fuck you!".
>
> Needless to say, I didn't go to work. There was a zombie-like march
> of thousands of people, many covered with dust,
> headed north. Helicopters and F-14's occasionally circled above - I hear
> one now.
>
> The fire must still be going strong judging from the smoke and the sirens.
> The
> devastation is just incomprehensible, as anyone who has seen the huge size
> of the
> towers in person knows.
>
> Walking around near Houston Street around 3:00, there was an eerie silence
> (lots
> of people around but hardly any cars). I heard, of all things, a seagull
> (unusual in
> this neighborhood -- it was perched on the cross at the top of St.
> Anthony's Church.
> It must have been escaping the smoke in the harbor area.
>
> Apparently WTC building no. 7 has also collapsed (dwarfed by #1 and 2 but
> still
> 47 stories -- much bigger than the one in Oklahoma City). At least it had
> probably
> been fully evacuated.
>
> My knees started to shake when I saw that second crash which confirmed
> what
> I already expected -- it was an intentional act. Then the news about the
> Pentagon
> and the other explosions and crashes. But when first one and then the
> other twin tower
> collapsed and were totally obliterated, I just could not believe what I
> was seeing. I
> almost got physically sick. Everyone left the park after that - it was
> just too much and
> there was nothing left to see.
>
> What an outrage.
>
> Seth
>

Statement of Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta

One of the most cherished American freedoms is the freedom of movement, the
ability to move freely and safely. Today that freedom has been attacked. We
will restore that freedom throughout the national transportation system as
soon as possible. And we will restore the highest possible degree of
safety.

These terrorist acts are designed to steal the confidence of Americans. We
will restore that confidence. We have already taken some first steps. As a
precaution, I have ordered the FAA to ground all commercial air traffic
until at least tomorrow afternoon.

After the attacks, some of our aircraft were diverted to Canada. We owe our
Canadian neighbors a debt of gratitude for helping us redirect over 120
flights and their passengers to airports in Canada.

As of 6:00 p.m., AMTRAK resumed its passenger rail service. Major railroads
have taken steps to protect their assets, as well.

The United States Coast Guard is taking all necessary actions to control
the
movement of any vessel in any navigable water in the United States. Coast
Guard helicopters have been assisting with medical and national security
tasks.

We are currently looking at a wide variety of additional security measures
to increase traveler security.

Travelers will see increased security measures at our airports, train
stations and other key sites. There will be higher levels of surveillance,
more stringent searches. Airport curbside luggage check-in will no longer
be
allowed. There will be more security officers, random identification
checks.
Travelers may experience some inconveniences. We ask for your patience. But
we must do whatever it takes, with safety as our highest priority.

The Department of Transportation is working closely with the White House
and
appropriate federal agencies to mount a coordinated, nationwide recovery
effort.

Each American must know that we will restore our national transportation
system to a safe and efficient status as quickly as possible. Our system
has
been severely burdened by the stress of these horrendous attacks, but we
will recover.

In a democracy, there is always a balance between freedom and security.
Our transportation systems, reflecting the values of our society, have
always operated in an open and accessible manner. And, they will again.

Please be assured that we are activating all of our resources on an
emergency basis, and services will be restored as soon as possible.</text>

              <text>Today we are all Americans

Dear Klaus and Kerstin:
Thank you so much for your very caring and inspiring message. We feel the
same
way that you do. Bruce and I returned yesterday from Europe and there were
many
different emotions upon arriving in the United States and New York. On our
approach to JFK airport, we circled out quite far over the water and then
banked
over the East River side of Manhattan on our way in. The sky still holds a
haze
and we could see the Statue of Liberty and then the tip of Manhattan, where
the
remains of the World Trade Center buildings were visible, marked by a rising
plume of smoke. It was very sad and eery to see the altered skyline. The
Empire
State Building has resumed its former position of ascendency, but an
anchoring
point was clearly missing. Most of the people on our flight were Americans
who
had been stranded in Europe and were just trying to get home by going
through
New York---they broke into applause when we landed on American soil. JFK
Airport
was practically deserted (compared to the usual situation) and we had to
have
our passports ready before we were even able to get off the plane. People at
U.S. Customs were very welcoming to us and none of the passengers seemed to
mind
the enhanced security. On the way to Manhattan where my apartment is, the
traffic was really reduced and alot of cars (particularly taxis) had
American
flags flying. Passing by apartments and shops on the way home, there were
American flags of all sizes being displayed from windows and flags at
half-mast
everywhere. On the streets, people have posted photographs and notices about
loved ones who are missing, in case anyone has any information. There are
flowers and little memorials outside of various fire stations and people are
being very generous, donating whatever they can to various funds for
remaining
family members and helping wherever possible. Mayor Rudy Guiliani has been
tireless and inspirational and is not ready to give up hope that some of the
trapped people could still be alive---neither are we. In general, people are
being very thoughtful to each other and you just have a sense of camaraderie
with passer-bys as you walk down the street. Security is definitely being
heightened and, for example, our office building in mid-town Manhattan
(which
was quite lax) is requiring everyone to show their work identification card
on
entering or re-entering the building and we can't receive any packages in
the
offices. We have to go to the lobby and open them there (we are on the 41st
floor of this 65 story building). I think there is also the sense of
"waiting
for the other shoe to drop"---so people are being extra cautious. At the
moment,
there is a sense of determination, but also of fragility and concern for
ourselves and for the whole world. For those of us lucky enough to have
children, we want to have this beautiful world be a safe place for them to
live
in and for their children and future generations, as well.
While we were in Europe--either by direct contact or by e-mail---we had so
many
communications from people who shared their sense of overwhelming disbelief
and
outrage that this could have happened and who expressed their solidarity
with
Americans in this tragic event. As you noted in your wonderful message,
people
have already come closer together. We have much hope that the world will
pull
together on this one and that we, as a world, will be able to overcome this
evil
of terrorism and its root causes.
Thanks again, Klaus, for taking the time to think about us and write to us.
Best regards,
Anita, Bruce and Craig

>
>
> I am writing this from downtown New York. In a
> perverse reversal, I have no
> way to contact anyone except through my high-speed
> wireless internet
> connection--phones are out, and electricity in the
> area is intermittent.
>
> The media will ultimately tell the story better than
> I, but I can tell you
> that there is massive loss of life. The sky is black
> with ash, the people
> have been panicking and fleeing in unadulterated
> terror. I have never seen
> anything like it. It is very difficult to breathe,
> even with your mouth
> covered--the ash blows down the streets and burns
> your eyes. It feels like
> the world has ended. When the screaming started and
> the crowds began to run
> after the second plane struck it was a horror film
> running in overdrive,
> jumping frames and cutting in and out. Time got
> lost--I don©t know how long
> this went on. I have a cut on my leg. I ended up in
> a Wendy©s where a huge
> number of us took refuge. I don©t know where the
> workers were--I helped get
> water for people.
>
> I am starting to see emergency workers, and the
> streets are clearing
> somewhat--at least the first waves of panic are
> passing. I©ve seen bodies
> draped in white sheets--it took me a time to realize
> those were bodies, not
> injured people; they must be out of room or not be
> able to get them to the
> morgues or the hospitals.
>
> I©m headed for the Brooklyn Bridge to walk out of
> the city. I©m going to
> stop at any hospital I find to give blood before
> leaving. If anyone reading
> this can, please donate blood--I heard from a medic
> that the hospitals are
> already running out.

We just heard the Pentegon has just been bombed and they are evacuating D.C. and N.Y.C.! All the news channels are blocked on the web -- at least no one here has been able to get in....

Another one from my mother sent at 14:53 GMT

One of the twin towers of the WTC has collapsed! All military bases have been closed to civilians. Airports in NY and DC have been closed. All flights in the country have cancelled.... planes in the air can continue to their destinations but cannot take off again...

Air Force One is in the air!

              <text>Hi E.,

Thanks for the update on your life. I am OK and still in Saudi Arabia. I do feel quite safe here, safer then back home. The Saudis have rather harsh punishments for crime--they cut off body parts. You will lose a hand for stealing and your head for killing. They don't mess around. It's a pretty effective deterrent.
I am enjoying my experience out here. I'll have to fill you in more later when I have more time to write. I expect to stay here atleast another 16 months. However, don't worry, if I ever feel my life is threatened, I'll be outta here. Really, I am quite safe.

I suspect that we have lost our Tom P, our class historian. Let me know as soon as you are sure and how to get in touch with his family to send along my condolences.
I am fortuntate that my family members were not harmed. My parents live 30 minutes from NYC and my Aunt, although in the city on the day of attack, was safe. My co-workers from ... who worked in the WTC have all been safely accounted for. I am close with two of them.

I am off to Germany tomorrow.
More later. Keep me posted,

R.
-------------------------------------------------------

Hi R.,

I wanted to try and reach you now that things are less frantic and make sure that you are OK. Are you still in Saudi Arabia? As much as I am sure that would have been a fascinating experience, I must admit that I hope you are
back in the states, or at least on your way back.

Everyone is fine here - except for being buzzed by F16's daily...

R., I don't know how closely you've been in contact with ... or any of the people from high school this week, but I wanted to let you know that I've heard that Tom P. from our class was on board the American airlines flight that crashed into the WTC. I woke up this morning and turned on CNN and they had his name, along with all of the other passengers, running in a ticker. It was one of the most horrible things I had ever seen - to see his name just scroll across the screen, followed by so many others. The age was correct, the flight originated in Boston and it said he was a camera man for Fox Sports. Considering how he always ran around senior year with a video recorder attached to his shoulder.... well let's say I have very few doubts as to whether or not there could be two Tom P.'s who would fit that bill. M. is trying to confirm it for me. I will let you know anything I hear from her, of course.

Please drop me a line when you have a chance and let me know what is going on. I'd really like to make sure that we still keep in touch. Take care of yourself.

A plane just crashed into the World Trade Center.
The building is on fire, I'm staring right at it.
I pray to God no one is hurt, but it appears as if the top floors are all on
fire.

And then there was a second one that hit the second tower. If that's not
terrorism, I don't know what is.

of all the recent comments here. I'm suspicious of my original equipment
r/r after several no-start episodes before and after buying a new
battery....been monitoring the output as i ride and it is intermittently low
(ranges from 13.9V to 11.9V). These start failures always occur after
riding all day Electrex unit is $146, local Honda price is $169.22.

Shoei v Arai? How can you go wrong...Buy the one that feels best on your
head.

First & foremost, I'd like to thank everyone around the world for their
prayers, concerns, etc.. I rec'd several e-mails, from concerned Listers &
would like to thank them all.

I believe that I was the first to post the list on Tuesday morning's tragic
events. Immediately after I posted, I evacuated my building, 101 Hudson
Street in Jersey City, NJ. (about 3/10 miles accross the water from the WTC)

I cannot express in words, what has transpired since I last spoke w/the
List. Nor can I express what I saw, just a few hundred yards from the WTC.
Amazingly, all of my friends who worked in the area have survived. One was
late for work, another at a golf outing...luckily the rest escaped on time.
There were some broken bones, but everyone (at least I think) that I know
has survived. The sad reality is that I have dozens of neighbors & friends
who can not say the same.

I wouldn't dare tell everyone the horror that many of my friends witnessed.
I heard stories over the past 2 days that have crippled me emotionally.
Nothing is as real as being 6 inches from someone who is telling you what
they lived.

I have also heard stories that have inspired me.

After being "stranded" in NJ until 9:30am yesterday (not really I crashed at
my uncle's house) I returned to my apartment in Staten Island w/a new
friend. Tommy is unable to get back to his home in Battery Park City (up
the block from the WTC). I recently learned, that Staten Island is now
closed off at all borders due to terrorist suspicions. Funny, seems like
I'm locked out of my house while someone else is locked in, w/his foot in a
cast.

Not as tragically, I will not be able to attend WDGAH V, as my bike is down
& I have too much to deal w/@ home & work. I am now counting down the days
until COTU III & WDGAH VI! ;)
I hope everyone has a great time in light of what has happened & look
forward to seeing everyone soon.

God Bless everyone who is affected by this tragedy & may he have mercy on
the souls of those responsible.

Lou
NYC

> I am talking about information that may be VITAL
> to the US for security
> reasons. It's simply about keeping your mouth shut
> and using your brains
> before you speak. Why do you think that is?
> Because the LESS the perpetrators know about what
> investigators (and military assassins - go SEALs,
HOOYA!!), the greater the chances af
> apprehending them. The 1st amendment gives you the
> right to say a great
> many things; your grey matter SHOULD give you the
> sense and intelligence and
> reason to NOT say it.

YOu know this is the one that bothers me. IT DIDN'T TAKE BIG MONEY. Not in
the grand scheme of things. If it took MAYBE 100k I'd be surprised. Their
greatest expense was training one or two pilots who then had to teach one or
two others the relatively simple task of steering the plane and pointing it
at a 700ft wide target. They didn't need to take off or land they just
needed to know where the transponder switch was and which way to point it.
Hell even the bombs where free :-(

kev

It takes _big_ money to pull off
> what was just done;
> it
> would be harder if the terrorists didnt have two nickels to rub
> together. Eliminate
> their
> money sources.

I spoke to Bill this morning, and he's OK. He now lives with his true love
in Chinatown, about 10 blocks from theWTC, and he saw most of what happened
first hand - including the collapse of both towers. What he describes is
beyond belief!

He got to his office this morning with great difficulty, and is now waiting
to learn if he has to work tomorrow, which apparently depends on whether the
stock market is open or not. If he's not working, he and Chris Pitts are
planning on meeting me and my buddy Richard at my place in Connecticut at
around 10:00 a.m., and we'll head for West Lebanon (although if its raining
and looks like its about to stop, we may delay the departure for a little
while).

Although we didn't discuss this, knowing Bill, if he has to work, he'll
leave
NYC after work and be in NH late Friday night . . . (didn't he do something
like that two years ago at Lake George?)

So . . . ride safe, and we'll see you guys tomorrow.

Boy, I sure do hope you and your ilk put a stop to this damned freedom we
Americans have had for the last 225 years or so. Perhaps you would like to
take away our guns with our freedom of speech? How about declaring martial
law and eliminating the needs for those pesky "search warrants" that have
plagued LEOs for so long? I was just thinking today that my encryption keys
should be given to the FBI in order to make sure I don't say anything wrong.

Nice to see my homeland has upheld its freedom.

I quote John Perry Barlow, EFF (eff.org):
As most of you know, I believe that the United States has gradually, subtly,
invisibly to most of us, become a police state over the last 30 years.
--snip--
Within a few hours, we will see beginning the most vigorous efforts to end
what remains of freedom in America. Those of who are willing to sacrifice a
little - largely illusory - safety in order to maintain our faith in the
original ideals of America will have to fight for those ideals just as
vigorously.

I beg you to begin NOW to do whatever you can - whether writing your public
officials, joining the ACLU or EFF, taking to the streets, or living visibly
free and fearless lives - to prevent the spasm of control mania from
destroying the dreams that far more have died for over the last two hundred
twenty five years than died this morning.

For those who don't know, John Perry Barlow is a songwriter, cattle rancher,
and co-founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). Despite how you
may feel about him personally, he fights for the rights of all Americans.

As long as your penchant for "rights" is appropriately balanced with a clear
understanding of the "responsibilities" that attend each of those rights, I
can live with this kind of diatribe. The ACLU, and their ilk, however, seem
to constantly yammer on and on about the rights that define freedom in
America...... That's simply unadulterated BULL****. It's really the
execution of our personal responsibilities that guard our freedom and
subsequently guarantee our rights.

Mmm, sarcasm. Isn't that nice.

Freedom of speech is great and I really can't stand it when people try
to squash it. However, IT DOES NOT EXTEND TO THE LEAKING OF CLASSIFIED
TROOP AND EQUIPMENT MOVEMENTS!! There are many things that the enemy
doesn't need to know.

Thank you all for your concerns, I am fine. I am sorry I was unable to
contact anyone before now, but the situation around here is ... I can't find
a word.

I had a coworker email us Tuesday morning because they stopped his train
and said that there was a fire at the WTC which didn't alarm anyone. 5
seconds later a member of the Unix team here came over and said that Ray (my
boss' boss) just came out of the WTC and a plane had hit it. We threw on
the radio at my desk, which indeed confirmed that a large plane had struck
the north tower, and we all ran outside to watch.

We got out there in plenty of time to watch as the second plane smashed
into the south tower, I was on a payphone talking to my girlfriend at the
time and our line was cut off the instant the second plane hit. I was 8
blocks away and a minimum of 600 feet below the blast and I could still feel
the heat.

Paper fell from both towers for what seemed like forever, some of it
burning, most of it just glittering in the sun. Then the people started to
jump .... I watched some of them .... it was like being on the set of a
movie, one with no special effects ... I don't know any other way to
describe it.

We stood there, a co-worker and I, and just watched, stunned, frozen,
confused, frightened ... you name the negative emotion, we all felt it. By
this time they had evacuated our building too, and as my whole company
watched ... the south tower crumbled in a diplay of sight and sound that I
can't remotely begin to describe. 5 seconds later I turned around and
walked back to the apartment in China Town that I'm currently living in. I
got there just in time to turn on the news and watch the second tower
crumble.

My girlfriend and I stayed glued to the news Tuesday night, finally
deciding around 6PM that we'd go get my car from the parking garage, get my
cell phone and personal items from the office (I'd left them all upstairs
not realizing what was about to happen), and we'd go give blood. We got to
the office, and it wasn't just our office anymore, the front atrium was a
triage center. We couldn't get in the building at all, so we tried
volunteering.

NYC ... an amazing place. By this time they had had more volunteers than
they needed at the triage center. We walked up 3 blocks where they were
taking voluteers for Ground 0 cleanup ... but since neither of us were iron
or construction workers, we were turned away. We went to the Red Cross a
few more blocks away, but they were full as well.

We went and got my car out of the parking garage, bastards charged me the
surcharge for leaving the vehicle past 7PM ... and headed for uptown where
we would try to give blood. Asked a cop near the Holland Tunnel if he knew
where the nearest blood center was, and he asked us if we could give a
fireman a ride up to 66th Street.

His name was Mitch, nice guy, apologized for putting his helmet on my
dashboard because he didn't mean to dirty my car ... he explained to us that
they needed people to drive the ladder truck out of this fire station
because the entire company had been lost when the first tower collapsed ...
the entire company.

We tried to give blood, but they were turning people away and asking us to
come back tomorrow, we went home and called it a night. The next day was
just as eery, if not worse. No vehicles ... none at all except emergency
and construction vehicles, allowed to move below 14th Street. I had my car,
but I couldn't move it. At Houston St., a barracade set up that stretched
from from the east edge of the island to the west, no one in or out unless
you had ID showing that you lived there. I went to walk my girlfriend to
work on 33rd St, but I had to turn around before the barracade otherwise I
wouldn't have been let back in.

I went back home (China Town), grabbed my camera and 8 rolls of film, and
went for a walk. I can't describe what it's like, walking along Canal St,
with not a vehicle in sight other than the occasional dump truck or police
car. Canal St is bumper to bumper every day of the year, every hour of the
day ... and it was just empty, as was every other street for as far as I
could see. I tried getting south of Canal so I could get to my office and
retrieve my cell phone which is where I have all my friends and family's
phone numbers stored, but no one, not even residents, are allowed down
there. I watched for a few minutes as one couple pleaded with officers to
let them by, their dog hadn't eaten in 24 hours and would starve to death
soon, but the police had their orders and no one was let past.

Got a call from my bosses last night, asking me if there was any way that
I could get to the office tomorrow. Woke up early, went over to Canal, and
tried asking nicely, but there was no way. Ended up waiting by a small side
street where they had only posted two cops to watch, one went for coffee,
and while the other turned to yell out a change to his order, I had to slip
under the rope and hide behind a dumpster for a minute before silently
moving away and slipping over to my office ... I feel like secret agent man.

Well, I'm back at the office now, finally have access to email, and
finally have my cell phone back. I'm one of the ones fortunate enough to
not have known (at least I don't think so at this point) anyone involved in
this horror, but my heart goes out to everyone touched by this gutless act.

Someone was very stupid Tuesday .... they have once again brought up on
it's feet, a sleeping giant. May the cowardly souls who committed this
crime be subjected to horrors and pains they never thought were possible.
God have no mercy on their souls.

Bill

This isn't about America -VS- them, it's about conquering/controlling
the dark side of our human nature. Yes, we must do whatever it takes
to prevent recurrence, but we have to weigh the costs of "eye for an
eye" actions.
God bless America....and the rest of us too!

Folks,

I'd promised myself not to SPAM this list anymore, but things change. I'll
be brief; we're putting together a donation to benefit a fund set up for the
families of the firefighters & police personnel lost in New York this past
week, and are donating ALL PROFITS ($75 per unit) from our direct Fastbag
sales to that fund. Details at our website, www.usfastbag.com

Offer available in areas not serviced by dealers (i.e., about 46 of the 50
states), valid through 9/25. Feel free to pass this info along to other moto
lists which you think might have interested members. Thanks & God bless.

to deal with this and future predicatments.

little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
- Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania,
1759.

FYI I'm not a big "flag waver" but I like this.

> Hi guys,
> I appreciate the wallpaper. So, to try to return the
> favor, I send this along for your reflection.
> Bruce
>
>
> I AM THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
>
> I am the flag of the United States of America. My name
> is Old Glory. I fly
> atop the world's tallest buildings. I stand watch in
> America's halls of
> justice. I fly majestically over institutions of
> learning. I stand guard
> with power in the world. Look up and see me.
>
> I stand for peace, honor, truth and justice. I stand for
> freedom. I am
> confident. I am arrogant. I am proud.
>
> When I am flown with my fellow banners, my head is a
> little higher, my
> colors a little truer.
>
> I bow to no one! I am recognized all over the world. I
> am worshipped - I am
> saluted. I am loved - I am revered. I am respected --
> and I am feared.
>
> I have fought in every battle of every war for more then
> 200 years. I was
> flown at Valley Forge, Gettysburg, Shiloh and
> Appomattox. I was there at San
> Juan Hill, the trenches of France, in the Argonne
> Forest, Anzio, Rome and
> the beaches of Normandy, Guam. Okinawa, Korea and
> KheSan, Saigon, Vietnam
> know me, I was there. I led my troops, I was dirty,
> battleworn and tired,
> but my soldiers cheered me And I was proud. I have been
> burned, torn and
> trampled on the streets of countries I have helped set
> free. It does not
> hurt, for I am invincible.
>
> I have been soiled upon, burned, torn and trampled on
> the streets of my
> country. And when it's by those whom I've served in
> battle -- it hurts. But
> I shall overcome -- for I am strong.
>
> I have slipped the bonds of Earth and stood watch over
> the uncharted
> frontiers of space from my vantage point on the moon. I
> have borne silent
> witness to all of America's finest hours. But my finest
> hours are yet to
> come.
>
> When I am torn into strips and used as bandages for my
> wounded comrades on
> the battlefield, When I am flown at half-mast to honor
> my soldier, Or when I
> lie in the trembling arms of a grieving parent at the
> grave of their fallen
> son or daughter, I am proud.
>
> MY NAME IS OLD GLORY LONG MAY I WAVE. DEAR GOD IN HEAVEN
> LONG MAY I WAVE
>

              <text>Dear friends,

Thank you for your e-mails expressing your concerns over the events fo the
last few days... it has been, as you can imagine, an unbelievable, almost
surreal set of events. All hospitals in the entire metropolitan area have
been placed on highest alert, esential personnel are being required to stay
in house at all times... I myself have only just returned from long evening
of anticipation and seemingly eternal stress. The stream of casualties has
been slow... a mixed blessing, in that it has been manageable, while on the
other hand, the slower the pace, the poorer prognosis.

The city is literally under "martial law"... all bridges and tunnels have
been closed, mass transit is at a standstill, and businesses are largely
shut down... driving into the city today (as medical personnel) traffic
congested streets were vacant... there is a palpable sense of foreboding,
and deep concern. The extent of the trauma is not yet realized... an
estimated 10,000 people were in the WTC buildings at the start of the
business day. I returned home this evening to see a gathering of 8 children
under the care of a resident in my building... each of whom who's parents
have not "returned from work" in the financial district...

There is a overhanging, nauseating smell of burning rubber that lingers over
the city, and perhaps most physically evident, a gaping hole where the twin
towers used to mark the NYC skyline.

It may seem cliché now to speak of the "spirit of New Yorkers", but I can
tell you, there is a remarkable outpouring of volunteerism, hlines in blood
donation lines, hundreds deep, and people opening their doors to firemen,
and police to take a nap or take a shower. It is incredible. ON the
medical personnel front, this disaster is larger than any of us could have
imagined... and the medical students and residents that make up the backbone
of the health care network in NYC have been truly heroic in their efforts.

As the events unfold in upcoming days, we can only hope for the best...</text>

My Home Town
Friday, September 14, 2001

It was a spontaneous outpouring of sorrow and solidarity. Our Brooklyn neighborhood gathered at a local elementary school just as darkness was falling. The rain clouds had lifted by then, and in the fading warm light of the western sky we could still see a trail of smoke and dust rising from ground zero.

There was no organization to speak of, no speeches, just a few cop cars and fire trucks blocking traffic, clearing the main street of Park Slope. Shoulder to shoulder a cross-section of our community -- young and old, children in tow, Black, White, Asian, Latino, and Muslim stood in solemn silence with candles held aloft.

And then we began to march. And the pockets of song began: Amazing Grace, We Shall Overcome, America the Beautiful, This Land is Your Land, Give Peace a Chance. Not always in pitch, but heartfelt, tears flowing. Thousands of individual flickering flames burning a point of hope in a very dark week.

And then we arrived at our local fire station. Fire Squad # 1 is an elite unit and was one of the first at the inferno. Twelve of their fire fighters are missing and presumed dead. Men who went into a burning building to save lives. Men whos own lives will never again lighten the eyes of wives, children, parents, and friends. This is the same fire station where my daughter, Lucia Kai, often went to sit in the drivers seat of the hook and ladder truck, a heavy firemans helmet sagging over her eyes.

I spent the past week in a shocked, listless trance, spending hours in front of the television, following a story that makes no sense. Trying to find some community of understanding that will allow me to process the swirling, confused emotions that have descended on this city, indeed, on all of America.

What kind of religion or political cause can justify the brutal destruction of 5,000 innocent lives. What kind of hatred does it take? How can this evil arise in a civilized world?

And I fear for the future. Even while we mourn the loss of life, I have enormous apprehension about how the Bush administration will respond. I think the brutality of this terrorist strike will make many people, liberals and conservative alike, cheer a retaliation against the perpetrators, if they can be found. This can be argued. But it is not what I fear most.

Already the conservative forces in this country, with Bush as their champion, are turning this event into a clarion call for their own "religious war." We are rapidly descending into a second Cold War. We will live by fear, fighting enemies real and imagined. Shadows of suspects around the globe will be created by our political ideology.

And if history repeats itself, as it always does, this new Cold War will justify an enormous abuse of power. We will once again divide the world between them and us. Once again, every global and domestic decision will be seen through the prism of this new ideology. On our side will be only those countries and individuals who support our interests. Everyone else will be an enemy.

It will likely spawn an evil, not as blunt as this recent terrorist strike, but a slow, creeping evil that will erode our soul as a country. During the last Cold War, we justified overturning democracies, supporting dictators and right-wing hit squads, and the loss of countless innocent lives. There is no reason to believe this new Cold War, fueled by a similar ideological view of the world, will be any different.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the world had begun to seem wonderfully Technicolor. Now, I fear it is quickly reverting back to black and white.

Today, the New York Times quoted an old saying from the 1960s: "We dont know what [weapons] World War III will be fought with, but World War IV will be fought with rocks."

Perhaps, a glimmer of hope lies in the spirit of a different America. An American, not of political slogans, but a country that simply stands, truly stands, for its ideals. A number of times in the past week my 4.5-year-old daughter has taken her building blocks and rebuilt the twin towers, so that she can "save all those who became dead." This time she says, she will build the towers out of bricks so they cant burn down. I like to think that each of those indestructible bricks is a voice against the hatred that occurred on September 11th, and the hatred that is now building in this country.

hitting home. Now the stories have a more human element with pictures of the victims and recordings of their last words on answer phones.

I hope that you and your loved ones and friends are all ok and are safe. We in the UK are all subdued and very upset by all of this and all our flags here are at half mast. We played the US National Anthem at the Changing of the Guard this morning and tomorrow there will be a Europe-wide day of
mourning for all those who died and a 3 minute silence at 11am.

Know you probably don't feel much like writing back but just wanted you to know that my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Much love.</text>

My Dear Friends,

I sit hear stunned and appalled at the atrocities being committed against America and its people. Since I dont know where you all are and the attacks appear to be
continuing I pray that you have escaped injury and remain safe.

My thoughts are with you, your families, and all your fellow citizens as you come to terms with the impact of todays events.

If there is ANYTHING I can do please be sure to ask and if it is within my power to help I will.

Regards,

Peter</text>

Subject: Re: Petition for Peaceful U.S. Response

I don't pretend to know jack about U.S. Foreign policy or Global Politics and
the rise of totalitarian regimes. Even though I've alwasy been fascinated
with the Totalitarian characters that spice up the world we live in. The
fact is though, that we created Bin Laden and others like him in the past,
and probably will create others in the future, fighting the dirty wars that
Americans don't want to get involved in. And then we abandon them and their countries and in ten years or so they turn against us. It happens over and over.

So...what do we do? We are between the proverbial rock now. The
Frankenstein Monsters we have helped to create must be killed before more
damage is done. And in the future, we need to avoid getting into these
quagmires by improving economic, cultural and political ties towards this
part of the world or the Arab world in general than we ever have before.

I could be full of it. Who knows? The gulf between US and THEM is far too
great I fear. THEY hate our way of life as it stands alone, without all the
baggage of the past. Plus, RELIGION is involved. And that mixes with
politcs, etc. like Ike and Tina Turner.

Hey...how about those Mets?

In a message dated 9/22/01 6:17:34 PM, xxx writes:

UNFORTUNATELY, YOUR FALLACIOUS ASSUMPTION IS THAT IF WE DO INDEED REFRAIN FROM RETALIATING THAT THE SUB-HUMANS THAT DID THIS WILL STOP ATTACKING US. IT'S A NICE THOUGHT. IT'S FAR FROM REALISTIC. YOUR MISTAKE IS ASSUMING THAT THEY OPERATE WITHIN THE SAME LOGICAL BOUNDARIES AS DO WE. IT'S A NICE THOUGHT. IT IS COMPLETELY ERRONEOUS. THE LOWER LIFE FORMS THAT ATTACKED US
HAVE SAID IN DOCUMENTED INTERVIEWS THAT THEIR GOAL IS TO BRING ABOUT THE DEMISE OF THE UNITED STATES AS WE KNOW IT. YOU NICE PEOPLE THAT SEND THESE WELL MEANING ALBEIT NAIVE E-MAILS AROUND FORGET THAT WHEN THEY DO SUCCEED IN DESTROYING OUR WAY OF LIVING, (WHICH THEY WILL ATTEMPT TO DO UNTIL THEY ARE
EITHER KILLED BY US OR KILL THEMSELVES IN SOME OTHER DEVASTATING MANNER ON OUR SOIL) THAT THEY WILL COME IN AND THROW YOU A BIG ROLLER SKATING PARTY AND SHOWER YOU WITH ADULATION IN RETURN FOR YOUR SUPPORT. RIGHT. THEY WILL KILL THE MEN AND THEY WILL STONE THE WOMEN UNTIL THEY BOW DOWN TO WHATEVER THEIR NEANDERTHALIC DESIRES MAY BE. (PROBABLY NOT AN ARGUMENT ABOUT WHOSE TURN IT IS TO DO THE DISHES.) I REALIZE THAT THIS COUNTRY OPERATES ON A CHECK AND BALANCE SYSTEM AND THAT YOU PEOPLE HAVE TAKEN UPON YOURSELVES TO DO THE CHECKING. THIS IS NOT THE TIME, HOWEVER, FOR IN-FIGHTING (WHICH IS ONE OF THE REASONS THIS HAPPENED) AS OUR COUNTRY NEEDS TO PULL TOGETHER PLEASE KNOW THE IMPLICATIONS OF YOUR REQUESTS FOR "PEACE" BEFORE YOU START
YOUR PARADE AND IN THE MEANTIME, ENJOY THE FREEDOM THAT YOU ARE FIGHTING SO HARD TO GIVE UP. I WONDER IF OSAMA WILL LET YOU HAVE A PARADE WHEN HE OWNS THE WORLD? HMMM...

The freedoms of which you speak have already been systematically eroding
through a jaded world view known as Neo-Liberalism -- a term known by most
Europeans, but few Americans. What Neo Liberalism amounts to capitalism
with its gloves off. Take a read sometime in something other than the going
mainstream news rags. It is not naive to point to the drastic polarization
of wealth occurring both in this country and world wide. Nor is it naive
to point to the norm in U.S. foreign policy as that which supports military
despots in exchange for cheap crude oil and other unrefined products at the
expense of human rights and any kind of quality of life for the majority
populations of these countries. Nor is it naive to point to the "terrorist"
tactics of the U.S. military in targeting the sophisticated water system in
Iraq -- a maneuver entirely against its civilian population, and our
continued bombing of that country resulting in 500,000 mostly civilian
casualties -- to name just one example of what has constituted U.S. foreign
policy. If the disenfranchised of this world view start taking up arms and
terrorist tactics, I suggest we start looking into the deeper causes of this
occurrance, which I have here tried to exemplify. A change in U.S. foreign
policy would be far more powerful than a protracted war in which many
innocents will perish. Taking on an enemy such as bin Laden starts with
understanding what made him. And that is what has given him his power,
since that has always been his tactic with us.
