I usual enjoy a nice view of the city and the rising sun but this morning saw the Pentagon presented in front of me with a massive, 100 foot gash taken right out of the side closest to me. Black smoke still billows out of the impact area as well as from several points on the roof. Three fire truck towers can be seen above the roofline still pouring water onto rubble. The smoke travelled across the freeway and smells sharply of a burning toaster or electrical fire. Much of the Arlington area is covered in a dull haze. Saw an F-18 fly over the house this morning as I was getting the paper -- it was almost low enough for me to read the markings. The usual morning rumble of aircraft taking off from Reagan National airport about 4 miles east of our house has been replaced by the steady, dull roar of fighter aircraft in the distance as they fly orbits around the Capital region. Had a police car last night guarding the fire station down the street. Despite all of this, despite what happened in NYC, the buses and cars are still clogging the region's transit system, the metro is still running, and people were rolling into work. By 8:30 a.m. this morning, despite a wide security perimeter around the Hill, my office was as crowded as it always is by 8:30 a.m. I am pleased, and proud, to report that both the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives will convene this morning in their respective chambers at 10:00 a.m. for yet another session of the people's business. Its been hard to get through, the phones are useless. My eyes have seen the most unspeakable horrors today. My ears have heard the screams. My life has been gratefully spared. Words cannot even express.. anything. First and foremost.. the massive loss of life.. is overwhelming. I have several former co-workers at the WTC that are still unaccounted for. I cannot get home, and I feel selfish for wanting to get home so bad when there are so many who will never return home again. All I want to do right now is be with Dave and never ever let him go. My beautiful Towers.. gone. I watched them go up, I watched them come down. They took a piece of my heart and soul with them. So many days when I worked at WTC I would lay on those benches beneath those commanding towers and stare up into the sky and marvel at the height and majesty of those buildings. I will treasure those moments now. As I sit in the office that I cannot leave.. I still see the smoke where the towers once stood.. and I cannot get home to my loved ones. I am lucky. I want to add that I do not condone violence of ANY KIND. I do not condone rascism of ANY SORT. I am so saddened by these events but refuse to 'take it out' on ANYONE. ESPECIALLY people in our own community who are of middle eastern descent. It is not my place to pass judgement on ANYONE nor is it yours. An explosive new book published in France alleges that the United States was in negotiations to do a deal with the Taliban for an oil pipeline in Afghanistan. Joining us right now is Richard Butler to shed some light on this new book. He is the former chief U.N. weapons inspector. He is now on the Council on Foreign Relations and our own ambassador-in-residence -- good morning. RICHARD BUTLER, FMR. U.N. WEAPONS INSPECTOR: Good morning, Paula. ZAHN: Boy, if any of these charges are true... BUTLER: If... ZAHN: ... this... BUTLER: Yes. ZAHN: ... is really big news. BUTLER: I agree. ZAHN: Start off with what your understanding is of what is in this book -- the most explosive charge. BUTLER: The most explosive charge, Paula, is that the Bush administration -- the present one -- just shortly after assuming office, slowed down FBI investigations of al Qaeda and terrorism in Afghanistan in order to do a deal with the Taliban on oil -- an oil pipeline across Afghanistan. ZAHN: And this book points out that the FBI's deputy director, John O'Neill, actually resigned because he felt the U.S. administration was obstructing... BUTLER: A proper... ZAHN: ... the prosecution of terrorism. BUTLER: Yes, yes, a proper intelligence investigation of terrorism. Now, you said if, and I affirmed that in responding to you. We have to be careful here. These are allegations. They're worth airing and talking about, because of their gravity. We don't know if they are correct. But I believe they should be investigated, because Central Asian oil, as we were discussing yesterday, is potentially so important. And all prior attempts to have a pipeline had to be done through Russia. It had to be negotiated with Russia. Now, if there is to be a pipeline through Afghanistan, obviating the need to deal with Russia, it would also cost less than half of what a pipeline through Russia would cost. So financially and politically, there's a big prize to be had. A pipeline through Afghanistan down to the Pakistan coast would bring out that Central Asian oil easier and more cheaply. ZAHN: (UNINTELLIGIBLE) as you spoke about this yesterday, we almost immediately got a call from "The New York Times." BUTLER: Right. ZAHN: They want you to write an op-ed piece on this over the weekend. BUTLER: Right, and which I will do. ZAHN: But let's come back to this whole issue of what John O'Neill, this FBI agent... BUTLER: Right. ZAHN: ... apparently told the authors of this book. He is alleging that -- what -- the U.S. government was trying to protect U.S. oil interests? And at the same time, shut off the investigation of terrorism to allow for that to happen? BUTLER: That's the allegation, that instead of prosecuting properly an investigation of terrorism, which has its home in Afghanistan as we now know, or one of its main homes, that was shut down or slowed down in order to pursue oil interests with the Taliban. The people who we have now bombed out of existence, and this not many months ago. The book says that the negotiators said to the Taliban, you have a choice. You have a carpet of gold, meaning an oil deal, or a carpet of bombs. That's what the book alleges. ZAHN: Well, I know you're going to be doing your own independent homework on this... BUTLER: Yes. ZAHN: ... to see if you can confirm any of this. Let's move on to the whole issue of Iraq. The deputy defense secretary, Paul Wolfowitz, at one time was considered one of those voices within the administration... BUTLER: Yes. ZAHN: ... that was pushing for moving beyond Afghanistan. He seemed to back off a little from that yesterday. BUTLER: Yes. ZAHN: What do you read through the tea leaves here? BUTLER: A very interesting report that the administration will focus on the Philippines, Yemen, Somalia as places where there are al Qaeda cells. But the word Iraq wasn't used by the man who was the chief hawk -- used as a, you know, as a future target. So what I interpret from that is this: That very likely our allies have been saying to us, this is too hard. This is really serious. Be careful. Saddam is essentially contained at the moment. Don't start, you know, a bigger problem either in the Arab world or in the coalition by going after him. And Wolfowitz, it seems, has probably accepted that. ZAHN: A quick thought on the Israelis intercepting this latest armed shipment? What that means? You've got to do it in about 15 seconds. BUTLER: It's extraordinarily serious, because it seems to have been tied to Yasser Arafat himself. It needs to be further investigated, but you know, Paula, the potentiality that this could once again prove an impediment to resume peace negotiations is really quite serious. I had a Dr's appointment w/Max & heard about it on tv when we first walked in (8:45 am) then soon heard about the 2nd crash into the 2nd tower. Max's sitter met us at the Dr - at about 9:30 am. I phoned Christian from her cell phone & he was fine. He convinced me not to go into work. (Not that I could have - I soon found out the subways were all shut down & the school closed as of 10:00 am. He turned on the radio - then my mom got through to him on the cell - screaming & crying she told him to come home. He's at home with my mom. Christian is still at work - but he's out in the boonies of Long Island - so we are not too concerned. It may be difficult for him to get home, though. I guess he could stay at my parents' house. There are constant sounds of sirens & people are just glued to their tvs & radios. We are all kind of dazed, teary, spacey... It's surreal. We were supposed to have a primary election today - but it's been postponed. I 've never been to the top of those towers - always figured I'd have a chance.... First, to let those of you with whom I haven't yet communicated know that Paula and I, and my family in NYC, are all ok after yesterday's disaster. We are all still anxiously awaiting news of a dear friend (Greg Rodriguez) who worked in the WTC South Tower; he hasn't yet been located. We are fearful, yet holding out hope as survivors are rescued through the day. Those of you who know the Rodriguez's, please keep them in your thoughts over the next couple of days. Second, I am writing because I don't know what else to do. I am at home, school is closed (and it would be skipped if it wasn't), the news is on in the background, and I don't want to read or watch a movie that I have. Some of you, when we spoke last night and I was exhausted, I promised details of my day from yesterday; here goes. Forgive me if this seems a little selfish; it may be that it's a therapeutic act to write. I can assure you that, from what I saw, there are hundreds of thousands of people whose days were much worse than mine. I should have known it was going to be a different kind of day when, on my way to the train, a Marine recruiter came up to me on the street and said: "So, you ready to be a Marine yet?" I looked at him as he looked at my shaggy hair and ample mid-section and said, "uh... no." I take a commuter train into Hoboken every morning, and then connect to the PATH subway to Manhattan. The Hoboken terminal is on the Hudson River, right across from the World Trade Center. I arrived at the terminal at 8:50 am, minutes after the first plane crashed into the North Tower. People gathered on the pier from which the Hoboken ferry leaves, and were aghast at the sight, which was unlike anything I've seen before. Smoke and flames were billowing from gaping holes on two sides of the tower. Someone said that a plane or a missle had hit the tower; others verified that it was a plane, that it looked like an accident. I phoned Paula, who stayed home from work sick, and told her to turn on the news. I then stood in gasping silence and took in the sight for a couple of minutes, sure I would never see anything like it again in my life. I then got on the train to head for the city. The PATH lets me off at 33rd St., near my office at the corner of 34th St. and 5th Avenue, kitty corner to the Empire State Building. When I got out of the subway and looked down Fifth Ave. to where the Towers were in view, it was clear that things had gotten considerably worse. Paula phoned me to say that minutes after I got off the phone with her a second plane had hit the South Tower. The southern horizon of the city was filled with a cloud of smoke. People were being evacuated (running) from the Empire St. Building, everybody was lining the streets and looking south towards the towers; people were fairly certain at this point that it was a terrorist attack. I called mom and dad and left a message saying I was ok, and then went to my office. Of course, nobody was at the office at 9:15. I called my brother to make sure he was ok, then went to other parts of the building to look for tv or radio reports, eventually finding a weak feed of CBS (non-cable reception was affected by damage to antennas on top of the WTC), which I watched with secretaries, my boss, and professors. People were freaking out, leaving to get their kids out of school, calling loved ones-- the phones were jammed pack, circuits busy. Once the South Tower collapsed and news of the other hijackings trickled in, the level of concern deepened. We could hear sirens and people shouting on the street below. As the North Tower collapsed and there was news of unaccounted for planes, I decided I needed to get as far away from the Empire State Building as possible. I frantically went back to my office and called my Aunt Janie, changed into my gym shoes, knowing that I was going to have to foot it downtown to her apartment on 1st St. The scene on Fifth Avenue as I walked downtown was near chaos. People were gathering around cars, listening to radios-- I kept thinking "Pearl Harbor" and of Bobby Thompson's homerun to beat the Dodgers for the pennant in 1951, other times in NYC history when people gathered around radios like this. Misinformation abounded; someone told me they hit the White House and the Sears Tower. The cloud of smoke to the south was now considerably larger, winds blowing it to the west. Fifth Ave was closed to vehicles except for emergency vehicles. As I got further downtown, the crowd got more dense; everybody was out, talking in cell phones, trying to located loved ones... except for one guy. He was at a table set up at Union Square and, seemingly unphased, trying to get people to sign up for new MasterCards. I hope he wasn't working on commission. It was a surreal site, walking towards this cloud of dust. People were filming and taking pictures. As I got below Sixth St., I started to see large groups of people walking in waves north from the WTC area; they were covered in soot, with masks over their faces, dazed. Some were bandaged, some a little bloody. I started to breath in some dust that had spread from the blast; I can't imagine what things were like another mile south. I got to Janie's, hugged her and Cousin Layla (who just wanted "the fire to stop... oh my gosh, this is bad..."), and spent the next couple of hours watching the news and on the phone, accounting for friends (it was at this point that I found out Greg Rodriguez was unaccounted for). At about 2:30, they said that ferries were running to NJ, and that there was limited train service... I set out for home, wanting to be with my wife, wanting to get out of the city for fear that things might get worse. I had to walk again, from 1st and Avenue A to 23rd St and the West Side Highway. There were less people out, but the same cloud to the south... I walked past St. Vincent's hospital, the one in the city furthest downtown... it was a mad house, supplies and ambulances were coming in, hundreds of folks were lined up to give blood. Once I reached the West Side Highway, the view of the disaster area was completely clear; emergency vehicles were racing downtown; a fighter jet was circling overhead. Police vehicles completely covered in dust and debris roared by. Looking north and ignoring the chaos, it was an incredibly beautiful day; calm, blue skies, plentiful sun. Looking south was a different story. I finally got to Chelsea Piers, from which boats were travelling to Weehauken, NJ. I waited in line for a couple hours-- it was like being herded in some sensationalistic movie like "Red Dawn," although the herders were much more friendly. I was speaking with folks, phoning Paula for updates, worrying. People were incredibly nice and incredibly sensitive and thoughtful; water was being distributed, no one was complaining, everyone was sharing their stories. One woman standing near me worked four blocks from the WTC, and saw one of the planes fly by her window. The boat that pulled into to take us brought into the city hundreds of medical personnel, nurses and doctors in scrubs, ready for the worst. We got on the boat-- which held 600 at a time-- and pulled away from the pier. As we did, the entire southern tip of Manhattan came into view... the most unbelievable sight of the day. People were talkative until this point; and then a silence fell over the crowd, and everyone looked in horror at what used to be there. People were alternately shocked and pissed and ready for war. We moved slowly across the Hudson and pulled into Weehauken. After getting off the boat, we were told that there were buses to take us to the Hoboken terminal... but the lines were incredibly long. I decided to walk the three miles or so rather than standing in place for a couple of hours. The view was still there. As I walked through Hoboken I saw things that I never thought I would see in my life; two women got off a phone and found out that a loved one was unaccounted for, and crumpled on the street balling. A woman embraced her husband, crying "I thought you didn't make it out." Complete strangers looked at each other and shook their heads. I got to the Hoboken terminal, returning to the vantage point I had in the morning. Smoke was still there, the World Trade Center was not. As the skies darkened and the view receded behind me-- although the cloud was still clearly visible at dusk from Newark-- a lot was running through my head: going atop the WTC with my grandfather in the early 1980s, traveling through the WTC to visit Paula when I still lived in Brooklyn and she was in NJ, what the future would hold and how our country and lives would be changed as a result of this, whether our friend had made it out or not. It took me another hour and a half but I eventually got home at around 8 pm, and spent the evening on the phone, watching the news, being with my wife, and being thankful for my life. Subject:        Ground zero   Date:        15 or 16 September 2001   From:   To: I went to Ground Zero today.  Actually, we went everywhere.  I was on a van donated by the Coach Lines which have tour buses and we were with an actual red tour bus and both the van and the tour bus were loaded with food, drinks and some medical supplies.  First we went to the police station near Cabrini Hospital downtown where many of the police are stationed.  They had a lot of perishable food and junk food, they wanted healthy non-perishable food (granola bars, etc) but they also wanted insoles.  All the police wanted insoles, wherever we went.  We didn't need a van of food, we needed a van of insoles.  The station was where we went to pick up a police escort.  Then we went to the armory where are the families go to look for missing persons.  The armory on 14th Street takes up a block and the entire block was pasted with pictures of missing persons:  their height, their weight, the rings on their fingers.  There were tents of food and first aid.  We then went to the West Side Highway which is a huge parking lot for police trucks and ambulances and police are lines up at every corner.  Nobody needed water.  Everyone needed insoles and gatorade.  A couple needed toothbrushes and toothpaste we had brought.  We went to Chelsea Piers, now a morgue and gave out food there.  It was an eerie feeling, to see the symbol of fun and games, so silent and sad.  In the middle of it, we saw a woman on a bench in a bathing suit, sunbathing!  Ah New York! Our officer told us that workers down at Ground Zero were being bussed in from 14th Street but had to walk back to 14th Street when their shifts ended (12-17 hours later).  When he saw this (around Houston), he stopped cabs which took the works to 14th St for free.  Cabs to volunteer places are free.  So are public phones. We started to go down Broadway. We went to Union Square where a homespun memorial had grown to the whole square, a memorial of pictures and rememberances and poems and flowers and signs and ribbons. Then through the East Village which looked as if nothing had happened.  People were eating in cafes and walking around the streets.  That was true past Houston too.  Soho was soho, although quieter.  Past Canal, however, it was unrecognizable.  Police and national guard and army were everywhere.  There were constant checkpoints.  But around Worth, (where the driver's license dept is, and the court buildings) it was still okay, and people had gotten in to gawk, although they were screened by police.  At this point, I lost my bearings.  To many trucks and army and police officers so that I had no idea where I was.  I saw no markers, no J&R.  I remember seeing the mayor's office but everything was overrun by this business.  We kept feeding people on the way down.  I don't know how we did it, tour bus and all, but we went all the way down, right where you see the pictures of the World Trade Center.  There was dust everywhere and we were given gas masks.  At the other stops, people had come to our van and our bus.  Here, we took the boxes out to the workers, one here, two there, as we walked down the street, trying not to stray to far from the safety of our cars, trying not to gawk like spectators.  This is where I found it most useful to give out small bottles of aspirin and tylenol, listerine, eye drops.  Nobody wanted food.  Nobody wanted water.  Nobody even wanted baby wipes which I thought was strange, but after awhile you realize that there is so much dust, baby wipes wouldn't help at all.  There was no sun down there, and the dust was phenomenal.  I guess, if you asked me what I took away from my experience, the most alarming was the dust.  It covered everything for blocks.  You could see how this tornado of building remnants had covered everything.  Tall buildings blocks away were covered, head to toe with dust.  Sometimes you couldn't even see where the windows were, there was so much.  The rain the other day did nothing to dampen this. In my little time there I can't get it out of my nose, my hands, my chest. And the smoke that I was talking about in the other letters?  Well it was smoke from smoldering cable work, etc.  But it was also dust.  I had never thought about that. I realized that much of our supplies are not getting to the workers in these places.  It's getting to the command posts and the red cross.  But these men and women are blocks away from these posts.  They have water -- they all have water.  But someone needs to bring bags of tiny vials of visine right to them so they can put it in their back pocket.  They can't use huge containers of it, and they don't have the strength or the time to walk blocks (through blockades and broken buildings) to the command posts to get what they need that second.  One person asked me for dental floss.  Who would have thought of that?  I ran out of visine too quickly.  I ran out of aspirin second.  Few needed bandaids.  None needed antibiotic ointment.  Many wanted gatorade (something other than water).  Many wanted something hot.  Food was not big there.  Who could eat in all that dust?  It was a hot day, but they were all wearing jackets. Helmets.  Gas masks.  Boots.  Were they wearing our clean socks which we so lovingly packaged and sent to the Red Cross?  Who knows.  I should have brought those too. Once we were in Ground Zero, we were in.  We went everywhere.  S----, A----, we went right to where the subway station lets you out at the World Trade -- where we went when we came back from Cirque to Soleil. That's where the main command post is.  Where all the heroic fire fighters are, and the people who are sifting through the steel and rubble for people.  They are covered with mud and dust and something white.  There is a mountain of smashed cars in one area, including a fire truck.  All those cars in parking lots, lost.  The command station also has beds for the weary. And the buildings?  There is rubble two or three stories high with those posts that you see in the news, standing, on their own, and you can see the number '1' on one of them.  But I had no idea where I was at this time.  Everything was unrecognizable.  And these people down there are working so hard, and so bravely. Then there are the asbestos guys.  These are the ones in white suits with masks and hoods.  It seems that the World Trade Center has 20 floors with asbestos after which the laws changed and you weren't allowed to build with asbestos anymore. We saw the people who were allowed in to get their stuff from their apartments in Battery Park.  They were lined up in long, overcrowded areas with signs stating where they lived.  National Guard were taking them.  They must have been there for hours. Finally, we had nothing left but water, which they didn't need.  And we went home. My whole body aches from lifting and carrying and jumping on and off that van. I would like to go back tomorrow.  Or late in the evening.  Mostly, I want to get the Red Cross and Javits Center to open the medical supplies and sort the visine and the insoles and the aspirin so we can bring those down to the workers, walking through those dusty streets, trying to give some comfort to a group that is not only weary, but profoundly saddened that this clearly has become clean up and no longer a rescue effort. I don't know if everyone has heard yet (how could you not), but there was a major terrorist attack on NYC. Two planes crashed into the twin towers. We can see it from our building and BOTH towers have now collapsed. I have been going out on the fire escape and it is the worst thing I have ever seen in my entire life. There is smoke pouring out of the buildings and masses of people are walking up the street. It is like the whole city is in mourning. Everyone is crying and trying to call anyone they can. We only have one phone line right now for calls in and out. There are fires all over the city down there. Both buildings have now collapsed. I honestly feel like I am goin to throw up right now. This is horrible. I just want you to know that I am ok. The city is on lock down, so I don't know if I will be getting home tonight, my guess is not. I hope any of you in the city are ok. Hundreds of people are just on the streets. I'm thinking about donating blood and getting some provisions - water, food, batteries. We've been told to leave but we're just frozen, sitting here wandering what the hell to do next. At least the computers and phones lines are still up, but not in our homes. Hi Tina, Phones are sporadic, seems we can phone each other here in the city but have trouble calling out, and no one can call in. So internet is the way to go. I am just logging on. Lisa was here much of the afternoon and had her lap top hooked up. She was still trying to locate all her team from KPMG. She was there right after the planes hit, and saw the towers on fire up close. People coming out of the towers told her that they were told they might collapse, so Lisa started walking uptown then. She had left messages for me, but I had gone into the office. She ended up at Met Life building at 23rd since she consults for them. No cell phones worked, so I was leaving messages on her KPMG line, and she on my audix until we finally talked in the afternoon. We both tried giving blood, but they can't take it fast enough, so will go back tomorrow. Anyway, I am pasting what I just wrote my brother and parents: I just can't get over looking south and not seeing the twin towers anymore -- very unsettling. I was getting ready to leave for work this morning, when around 8:45 the television switched to a picture of the world trade center with a gaping hole in the side on fire and speaking to eyewitnesses saying a plane flew into the side of the tower. It was eerie to say the least. I called into the office to tell them what was happening, when I saw the other plane hit the other tower and explode -- at first I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It was macabre watching on television, and I decided to go to work. I could see the towers on fire in the distance when I went to the subway, and emergency vehicles were everywhere -- police, fire, red cross, etc. The subways were still running except for the 1 and 9. It wasn't until I was walking to the subway that I was overcome with the thought that they may bomb them next. When I got to work, they were all listening to radios, and we heard the pentagon was hit as well. I had to get a hold of the model and photographer to cancel a photoshoot planned today, and get delivery info off to Canada for catalogs. I had friends coming in from Indiana (Mike and his wife Kimberly) and couldn't get a hold of them. Once I finally talked to them, I told them to find a nice spot in Pennsylvania and hang out. There is no way they will get into the city today. Tomorrow they'll have to decide what we are going to do but I can't imagine trying to show them around the city any time soon. By mid morning, they were sending us home from work, but all bridges and tunnels and subways were closed, so I was waiting to see if anyone needed to stay at my place. Our CEO got hotel rooms for everyone from NJ, and so I left for home. By this time all subways were cut off, so I walked home. I was going to give blood and walked down 7th Avenue from work towards St. Vincents. I had not seen the towers collapse on tv, but others in the office had told me they did. When I walked downtown I was amazed that I couldn't see anything remaining of the the towers -- I had assumed they had toppled from the point of impact and that the stubs would still be visible. It wasn't until I got home and saw news coverage that I understood why I couldn't see them at all. When I got to St Vincents, most of the streets were closed off awaiting incoming wounded -- but I didn't see anyone coming in. There were people walking up from lower Manhattan -- many disheveled and everyone was in a state of dismay. The lines for blood donors were amazingly long. One guy said it was over 6 hours wait so I decided to wait and possibly give blood the next day -- I thought there would be an ongoing need. Later I tried to give blood with Lisa at Met Life, but they were backed up too. Before I had left my office, I had talked to my friend Pat who works at Gouveners Hospital on the lower East Side. She saw both planes hit the buildings from her office and was quite shaken up. We were cut off abruptly. I called back and someone told me she was whisked off to trauma. We haven't hooked up since, but she left me a message saying they set up a trauma unit in her hospital (which is more of a clinic than an ambulatory care unit), and her day was grueling. Hope she is okay. She said she had seen a small green plane hit the second tower, which is what I thought I had seen as well. Looking at the newscast over and over this afternoon, I think from the angle I first witnessed, there was a small green plane flying close to the tower, and the jet came from behind the tower and went through to the front and exploded, thus it looked like it was the small plane in front that had crashed on the corner -- thus my confusion. (the more I look at the footage, it may have just been the way the light was hitting the jetliner (in the shadow of smoke from the first tower on fire it looked green, and it looked small?????) It is unreal. Lisa and I went back to Met Life because they gave her a number for she and I to give blood. We had 312, and they were only up to 115. National Guard soldiers with guns were patrolling streets by this time, as well as police, etc. They closed off most streets, 2nd Avenue is only emergency vehicles. Gramercy Park was open -- I have always wanted to see inside the park and now I have! I guess they opened the gates to make it easier for all the people walking north. Later in the day, on television officials called for all surrounding communities to send fire departments and ambulances, there was a whole line of emergency vehicles from NJ, Long Island, Upstate, and Connecticut coming down 2nd Avenue in a long procession soon after we heard this announcement on tv. Right now the city is like a war zone. You can walk around and feel safe, but everything is shut down and emergency workers are everywhere. Streets are blocked and manned with National Guard soldiers and police. Anyway, I hope that airlines get back on schedule in time for me to visit :-) I am scheduled to be off work, because of Mike and Kimberly visiting, so will be home tomorrow and will be checking email. I'm fine and Ricky's fine. The smoke is all going into Brooklyn, so there is no smoke here -- I know when I left to work I thought to close all the windows thinking there would be smoke.
