<text>10:59 am September 11, 2001 Washington DC near the Pentagon

Hi everyone,

Just to let you all know that I am OK. I'm in DC right now and been told this system will be shut down ASAP.. Maybe this will get out first.

I can't leave DC right now, and been told to stay where I am. Don't know when I'll head home, but could be tomorrow or maybe later even.

Anyway, I'm fine and staying put for now. Just been told to send this because it's being shut down.

Love John

8:22 pm September 11, 2002

Hi everybody,

Ok....things have finally settled down a little and we can think again. I've never seen so many guns out in the open as I did today. FBI etc. rushed into the streets and wouldn't let anyone in or out. Most roads closed in and out of DC. Lots of traffic. I've been told to stay close to a phone and put on emergency recall. I have been told that I might have to come in and work an emergency situation room (communication etc.), but I doubt I get that call tonight. I got home fairly easily, due to the fact that I stayed until after 2:00 PM and everyone else had already left.

Anyway, nothing really to report from here. I know just about what you do from the TV. I don't know yet if I'm supposed to go in tomorrow or not.
Should hear soon.

I'll call after the phones get better.

John

<text>I normally catch the 7:34AM train into Penn Station, but because of local traffic, I arrived late and had to catch the 7:50AM train instead. I was able to catch the subway down to Chambers and I walked outside to because there was a long wait for a subway into WTC. When I got outside, I saw all these people looking up @ 1 WTC, and then I looked. The huge hole, the fire. It was fuckin' nuts. I asked someone what happened and he said an airplane crashed into 1 WTC. "It must have been an accident," I thought. I figure that was about 8:50AM or so, then I saw another explosion and that was 2 WTC. The first plane, I heard, hit in the 80s floor? region and I figure the second airplane hit the 60s, where I would've been (I work on 68). I was just shaking my head.

It was so surreal. I was hanging out on West Broadway and Chambers most of the time. Someone just yelled, "Get away. They're going to collapse."
I really think that either one would collapse, but I started walking north anyway. The mobile phones weren't working...too many people bombarding the phone lines at once. Just to see the horror in their faces as all this SHIT going down was ... Then I heard people say,
"Did you see that? Oh my God! Someone just jumped." I never saw any of
it. I had my back turned all the time from the chaos. I don't remember, but I saw 2 WTC collapse on tv while I was at a bar on 14th and 3rd Ave.
I couldn't believe it. Then I just proceeded to walk north on
1st Ave. Then I made it up to my sister's place on 61st and I was there
until 9PM.

I'm still a bit shaken. Life will never be the same for anyone I know. Having grown up and lived in NY basically all my life and to not see my workplace anymore or just a couple of NYC landmarks, it's just incredible. It's surreal.

Anyways, thank you for your concern, Justine. I'm alive and so are my friends and family who work in the area.

peace,
al

Thanks for asking, Kim is ok as far as I know. Have you heard from U Tom. This is part of what a friend sent to me.

Not more than 10 blocks from me and i really dont know what to say. I am on the 9th floor staring directly at the crash. The fires are still raging, people are scattered everywhere. There really is no way to control it. Complete destruction. THis was something done only out of
sheer evil.

Scary isn't this, so many people are dead. -Kent

              <text>Dear Uncle Jim -

Thanks for writing - I am so sad about all of this and just hope and pray that we can find another way to respond to this threat. I woke up yesterday defiant and thinking why should we give up our freedoms and rights so easily? We didn't do this to ourselves and if we choose to live in repression they will have triumphed - I am not willing to do that but I have seen signs of the police state growing around me and the easy acceptance of that fate as if we were bad children needing to be punished. I was watching television on tuesday night and watched in horror as 5 beefy policemen beat the shit out of a man who was trying to get through a check point in lower Manhattan - the commentators acted as if that was entirely reasonable? Let's hope the hammer doesn't get to hot on that busy anvil.

I have had a hard time adapting to life in NYC these past 3 years - often feeling so deeply the lack of compassion that people have for the suffering humans face down on the sidewalk in front of them. No one can carry too much of another's pain here - but than again the rough love of these New Yorkers will wrap around you and bite you in the ass when the worst possible thing happens. It is hard to be living alone now but it also prompts me to go out and find someway to help - I am a student at The Swedish Institute for Massage Therapy and we will put together a team of students and supervisors to go and comfort the rescue workers.

I think of you and Jeanne often - please send my love to Adam and his family.

Love, Melanie

dear melanie..... I didn't know that you were so close to the horror. It happened in your neighborhood!? what has happened and "our"reaction to it will define the rest of our lives I quess. Kharma is a force of nature. my heart goes out to so many places......... the firemen: suddenly that term takes on a huge metaphor. I'm glad that you are safe and well, thanks for thinking of me. Its like living on top of a busy anvil. love, jim </text>

<text>Had to run to the men's room and make some little
Osamas...

So where we at... ah, yeah, ok...

I keep hearing about a "return to normal", and getting
back to or "seeking normalcy". Well, I don't know about
that. It's like Yogi might say "There ain't no normal
cause this is normal". Way I figure it is this the way
it is and the way it's gonna be from now on, might as
well get used to it.

One of the things that I told my kids was that the
attack on the WTC happened around 8:48AM and that I
wouldn't have been in the building at that time anyway.
I explained to em my - not one minute more than
necessary - philosophy, that if I had been there I
would've been standing outside having a cup-a-joe and
waiting til 9 before going up to work. That seemed to
make em feel better and now we have a deal - if I get to
work early I grab a paper and a coffee and chill til 9.
It's now part of my new routine. (Not that it would mean
any less danger, just look at that poor woman who just
died after sufferring for 41 days with 90% burns. She
was just on the street waiting for a bus when the plane
hit and drenched her with burning jet fuel). But if it
gives em some piece of mind then wtf.

Hey, did you catch my homey tellin Osama to "kiss his
royal Irish ass"? Man I was diggin that. I graduated
from H.S. with his brother John, the chief that was
killed in the attack. Always knew us Irish guys from
Rockaway had a way with the words. The attack hit pretty
hard back in the old neighborhood. I hear you can't go a
block without having at least one house missing someone.
I have the odd circumstance of having grown up in the
poor Irish neighborhood, yet in school I was in the
advanced classes with most of the kids from the next
door wealthy Jewish neighborhood. The Irish kids tend to
grow into firemen or cops (or both, switching between
the two is fairly common) the Jewish kids tending to
head into the banking and investment world (the Cantor-
Fitzgerald bond firm in particular). So it was a double
edged sword that hit Rockaway and it seems I had one
foot in each camp.

I also dug when they booed ol' Billary. Yeah buddy, go
home you carpet-baggin bee-otch.

And speaking of royal asses... didya catch when Rudy
told that little cock worm Saudi dickhead to take his 10
million and stuff it up his culo? Heh, Roo-dee Roo-dee!
In hindsight though I figure he couldv'e taken the money
and done something good and offensive with it. Some
suggest donating it to the Israeli Defense fund but I
had a better idea - blow the whole 10 mil on booze and
broads. Yup that's right, truck in a few hundred kegs,
hire a bunch of ho's and have a suck-my-militant-dick-
you-inbred-piece-of-shit party. Nothing shows
appreciation for a job well done better than buying a
guy a blow-job, dontcha think?

Some days are better than others, some days downright
suck. My brother's wife lost her aunt (a grandma with
one daughter and one granddaughter), my brother-in-law
lost one of his close friends (a 34 yr old fireman with
a wife and four daughters). Funerals, memorial services,
bagpipes, flags, moments of silence... day after day
after day. Mondays used to be the worst day of the week,
now it still sucks but the rest of the week seems to get
progressively suckier. I get some peace on the weekends
and actually like the idea of having recently moved some
60-odd miles out onto L.I., but here at work, smack in
the middle of the shit, the "bad juice" seems to build
until come Friday I've bout had it.

In trying to explain the feeling I found it compares to
the feeling you get in your stomach when you get
arrested and they throw you into the cell and ker-CHUNK
the door. It's the same hollow, pit of the stomach
sinking, whirlpool, ah fuck, type feeling. Hell, there
just ain't no gettin away from it, the news, the
newspapers, the news tickers, people talking... even the
ID card that I wear around my neck has 36 (yes, I
counted em) little pictures of the WTC in the background
logo.

Man if I could get away to an island for a few weeks
with no news it would be sweet. Just lay around and puff
up some fatty boom batty chronic blunts and wash em down
with some exotic little paper umbrella sporting
elixer... yeah that'd do it.

In the meantime, all I want to hear about now is body
counts. How many of those lice infested fuckers did we
send to hell today? That's all I wanna know. Fuck
coalitions, fuck the Pakis, fuck Saudi, fuck world
opinion, fuck the Northern Alliance, fuck the peace-niks
and fuck Richard Gere their gerbil lovin spokesperson.
And the press, a big hearty fuck you to the media. I
swear, if I see one more little robo-raghead chanting
about his ahkbar and burning flags I'm gonna take note
of the network showing it and head over there and take a
hot steamy crap right smack in the middle of their
elevator.

              <text>HI JULIE, HI PETER,
we're still under schock and devastaed watching CNN and seing those horrible pictures. It's unbelievable. I hope people in NY will have enough energy to overcome this situation. I wish we could be there and help, US is almost our second home. How sick can a human mind be to just destroy so many lives? We're happy both of you are OK, everybody in the family is also OK. Old good friends of us in Harlem have only an answering machine on, Billie & jerome Starke, 212-923-2940. it would be great if you could reach them. The pictures of south Manhattan look like Aplocalpse, like "the day after" movie. Almost like Hollywood... More than anybody could imagine, more than anybody could stand. We are with you in our thoughts and we 're mourning for the lives lost in our "second home country"

<text>I received an email recently containing a famous quote relevant to the current tragedy. It started me thinking about a few choice quotes that I've enjoyed over the years that were also relevant. While it's all too easy for us to impulsively call for action or espouse our own personal agenda, I prefer to hear what great thinkers have to say on such important subjects. With this in mind, I began jotting down these random thoughts in this email.

After my initial shock over the tragedy subsided, I searched for some mental foothold from which to start climbing my way back to reality. Like many, my first reaction was to look for blood. Since movies seem to provide the only references even close to this situation, it's not surprising that our brains conjure up movie scenes. One New Yorker who saw the planes crash into the WTC noted how realistic the movie special effects really are. How lucky we have been in this country that that is the closest that most of us have ever been to a large explosion.

This quote from Pulp Fiction seems to sum-up my initial reaction to the madness:
I don't wanna hear about no motherfuckin' "ifs." What I wanna hear from your ass is: "you ain't got no problems, Jules. I'm on the motherfucker. Go back in there, chill them niggas out and wait for the cavalry, which should be comin' di-rectly."

Even if our military might is the metaphoric cavalry, what can they really do? Who or what can they blow-up that will eliminate this kind of terrorism? It felt good to dream of lashing out and decimating what I thought was the source of this evil. As such I wanted to go along with the calls I heard to nuke Afghanistan and turn it into a parking lot.

Once my initial anger diminished however, I instead became much more interested in finding some explanation, some wisdom, some sense of what happened and what we should do.

I've kept the following two quotes over the years because I've never been able to understand religious wars, particularly in the Middle East. I still don't; but I never thought that that fighting would extend onto American soil.

"Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction."
-- Blaise Pascal

"You're basically killing each other to see who's got the better imaginary friend."
-- Yasir Arrafat (PLO leader) referring to the foolishness of religious wars.

Now that we are awash in a confusing cacophony of opinion -- some sound, some vitriolic -- words and metphors get stretched until their meaning is almost lost. Things like terrorism, courage, patriotism, humanity, justice and tragedy have a different meaning to me than they did a few weeks ago.

This Newsweek article helped me find some rational thought in all the noise.
http://www.msnbc.com/news/629514.asp?cp1=1

This patriotic quote >>below<< gave me some perspective -- I wish President Bush could have been this eloquent; although he has done a little better with practice.

>> "It is our obligation to our dead -- it is our sacred obligation to their children and to our children -- that we must never forget what we have learned. And what we have learned is this:

There is no such thing as security for any nation -- or any individual -- in a world ruled by the principles of gangsterism. There is no such thing as impregnable defense against powerful aggressors who sneak up in the dark and strike without warning.

We have learned that our ocean-girt hemisphere is not immune from severe attack -- that we cannot measure our safety in terms of miles on any map any more.

We may acknowledge that our enemies have performed a brilliant feat of deception, perfectly timed and executed with great skill. It was a thoroughly dishonorable deed, but we must face the fact that modern warfare as conducted in [this] manner is a dirty business. We don't like it -- we didn't want to get in it -- but we are in it and we're going to fight it with everything we've got."
-- Franklin D. Roosevelt DECEMBER 9, 1941 <<

Scarily, many are quick to call for sweeping legislation to restrict our freedoms or the freedoms of certain races/ethnicities in our country. I realize that some change is warranted and we'll have to adjust to a more limited idea of inalienable rights of independence but we need to control this to as little as possible - and I don't think that this can be done without a more careful deliberation. Remember what Benjamin Franklin said, "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

This next section is from a group called In Defense of Freedom which has released a good starting point for this discussion:

>> In Defense of Freedom at a Time of Crisis

1. On September 11, 2001 thousands of people lost their lives in a brutal assault on the American
people and the American form of government. We mourn the loss of these innocent lives and insist
that those who perpetrated these acts be held accountable.

2. This tragedy requires all Americans to examine carefully the steps our country may now take to
reduce the risk of future terrorist attacks.

3. We need to consider proposals calmly and deliberately with a determination not to erode the
liberties and freedoms that are at the core of the American way of life.

4. We need to ensure that actions by our government uphold the principles of a democratic society,
accountable government and international law, and that all decisions are taken in a manner
consistent with the Constitution.

5. We can, as we have in the past, in times of war and of peace, reconcile the requirements of
security with the demands of liberty.

6. We should resist the temptation to enact proposals in the mistaken belief that anything that may
be called anti-terrorist will necessarily provide greater security.

7. We should resist efforts to target people because of their race, religion, ethnic background or
appearance, including immigrants in general, Arab Americans and Muslims.

8. We affirm the right of peaceful dissent, protected by the First Amendment, now, when it is most
at risk.

9. We should applaud our political leaders in the days ahead who have the courage to say that our
freedoms should not be limited.

10. We must have faith in our democratic system and our Constitution, and in our ability to protect
at the same time both the freedom and the security of all Americans. <<

Similarly, there is an understandable desire to greatly increase the powers of the government to surveil private citizens. This loss of privacy must be tempered with reason to ensure that we get significant value out of this stripping away of our most basic civil liberties.

"A policeman's job is only easy in a police state"
-- Orson Welles

Adversity such as this cuts to the core of what we stand for as a nation and what we stand for as human beings. Here our lives and freedoms are threatened by terrorist but the solutions being proferred involve limiting our liberty and reducing the quality of our lives. Who better to turn to than the great leaders throughout history who stood tall in the face of very similar fears and catastrophes. I'd like to learn from them to see if we can glean some of their wisdom.

"The real Art of Peace is not to sacrifice a single one of your warriors to defeat an enemy. Vanquish your foes by always keeping yourself in a safe and unassailable position; then no one will suffer any losses. The Way of a Warrior, the Art of Politics, is to stop trouble before it starts. It consists in defeating your adversaries spiritually by making them realize the folly of their actions. The Way of a Warrior is to establish harmony."
-- Morihei Ueshiba, The Art of Peace

It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness
-- Chinese Proverb

"The only response to violence is compassion."
-- Ghandi

... and even though I'm not what you'd call a "God-fearing man," the best response for me is this one...

"People are often unreasonable, illogical and self-centered.
Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives.
Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies.
Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you.
Be honest and frank anyway.
What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight.
Build anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, people may be jealous.
Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow.
Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough.
Give the world the best you've got anyway.
You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God.
It was never between you and them anyway."
-- Mother Teresa

Thanks for listening. Take good care.

<text>With thanks to God, we are all doing great but in great pain over this National tragedy. Both my home and office overlook lower Manhattan and we still see the smoke from the WTC and skyline.

IDT is no longer in the Internet business, as you know. But our Telecom business is doing well, and we have survived the dot-com blowout.

I hope all is well with you and yours. Please see enclosed photo.

              <text>
I heard today on the radio Bush talking to Pataki and Guiliani, his
capacity to get out a sentence was so limited, it was scary, Pataki and
Guiliani had to bail him out and supply words for him. Then there was a
press conference where he immediately segued into a written script and
went back to it to obviously after a stuttering effort to get out an
answer.

I hope somebody, in or out of the US is prepared to bail us out with
some leadership

I'm off tomorrow,8 hours without the news on the radio. karen said she
cancelled the big birthday party for Nathan, she didn't feel right
celebrating.

I have not wanted to be alone and I have indulged that, phoning,
emailing, going to meetings, services, socializing after meetings.

I am sure you are seeing the same in your neighborhood, but here we have
a tremendous number of financial district workers because it was a quick
commute. At the synagogue last night during the misheberach, the number
of
names called out was a lot.

tonight there was a candlelight vigil on the promenade where we look out
on the Manhattan
financial district skyline. The promenade was 8 blocks long of
people with candles, flower bouquets, quiet groups talking to each
other. Kids sitting on the ground around a circle of candles. One
group was surrounding the woman who does the performance art of the
Statue of Liberty and they were singing as many patriotic songs as they
could remember.

There was an Orthodox man singing psalms Shlomo
Carlebach style and I stopped and sang, and after a while when he had
gathered enough men for a minyon he made a little speech (maybe gave a
little torah, mamush as shlomo would say )and said kaddish, The next
group was
singing "Amazing Grace"

Then as I was leaving, people were leaving the candles and bouquets in a
circle at the foot of a flagpole, and again singing patriotic songs,
the anthems, waving flags, and I broke down. When jaded
New Yorkers can't sing the anthem loud enough or wave a flag hard
enough, the world is a different place.

There are posters made at Kinko's with color photos of missing people on
our lampposts. when I came home earlier there was one, now there are
four. Our fire houses all lost people, two 8 each, one only 1, one
wiped out totally except for one guy. There are bouquets and thank you
notes outside the fire house.

Some friends of mine went down to the fire house in Red Hook which had
lost eight men to ask what they could do to help. And those firemen had
not had any visiters, and they had no food so my friends went and got a
big deli spread and cakes and came back and she said the firemen broke
down and started crying and they all cried.

In a way I am glad I am fully experiencing this.

Love,
Suzi</text>

<text>I want to go home. I want to go back to Rochester where buildings three blocks away don't get hit by terrorist planes and collapse in front of my window.

Are you okay? I heard about the plane at the Pentagon and something about fires on the National Mall.

It feels like the world is ending.

I'm very, very, very scared... Mom's probably told you this, but I know you haven't seen my school so it's hard to imagine how close I am to everything--literally, three blocks away, and right next to the hospital. Our building shook when the planes crashed and when it was burning,
you could see papers flying out. The worst part was that people were jumping from 100+ floors up. You could see them. Then the south building buckled-- it was like something out of a very very fucked up movie-- right next door.

So we were evacuated from our dorms and now we're all kept in the west wing of the second and basement floors. There's a gas leak in the east wing and even though Guliani's telling everyone to leave lower Manhattan we can't go yet because the air is so full of debris and fiber you
can't breathe. It's all settled on the ground (four inches deep, in some places)... it looks like snowfall. There's no one on the street. People came into our building covered in ash and dirt, and we're giving food and shelter to people, which makes me proud of my school. But it's very, very, weird. Everyone is shook up and frightened. It's almost five hours later and the buildings are still burning. The sky is filled with this thick, billowing smoke. When the TV
news pans out against the Manhattan skyline, it looks like all of downtown is on fire.

There are people here who had relatives, friends, and parents who worked in the towers. I can't imagine how they must feel. No one even has any idea how many might be dead.

I miss you. Please call me, if you can, sometime today. I don't know when we'll be let back in our dorms, but, yeah... I want to hear from you.</text>

<text>I don't even know where to begin. First I thought of what is truly important in life, and then of what sort of plan this all fits into. This is what I came up with:

I pray that this is what will make people stand back. I pray that we will not escalate this, and that we will have the courage not to fight back. I saw the video footage of the World Trade Center collapsing, and any anger or longing for vengeance just dropped out of my soul. I pray that the world sees that we can never kill or promote violence again. The world has seen enough killing and it sickens humanity. Like when the Romans had seen enough unfighting Christians slayed in an arena, they said "no more", when we do not retaliate, this can serve as that which ceases modern war.

This is not likely. People do not work like that, but I ask that you consider this notion. If we fight back, the lives taken today will be even more statistical beneath the violence to come.

Grant us peace, sanctity, and the wisdom to do what is right.
