I was worried about you and how things might be in Kosovo. I tried to e-mail you from school to see if you were all right, but the damn school blocked AOL and I couldn't remember your e-mail address. This whole happening is surreal. It is hard to believe that any group of people can have so much hate to do this terrible thing to so many innocent people. The only word I can think of to describe them is crazy. Unfortunately between NY and DC I am almost sure this will affect you in a very personal way. We are hearing that the death toll will be in the tens of thousands. I have no confidence in Bush's ability to deal with this situation. It's frightening to have a dim bulb in the main socket in such an emergency. I hope he has good advisors and is scared enough to listen to them instead of relying on his own IQ. I can't remember being more horrified about a news story before. I was shocked when I heard that planes had collided with the Trade Center Towers. When I heard that the planes were hijacked commercial airliners, I cried. I can't say that I've felt a great deal of anger about this whole situation though, mainly sorrow, shock, and horror. There isn't a part of me that wishes to strike out against the guilty parties for revenge. Instead, I want to see them annihilated and/or apprehended because they are a clear and present danger, and they will always be a danger if allowed to remain at large. I feel sadness about the whole situation because I know there will never be a resolution that will bring comfort. If a surgical strike annihilates (if it's him) Bin Laden and his camps, then it will feel anti-climactic, compared to the devastation that has occurred. But we'll know that they won't be responsible for any more tragedies. If we are forced to take military actions against Afghanistan, if it turns out that they are harboring the terrorists, I will surely regret the loss of life, but I would not shed a tear for the destruction of the Taliban as an organization (once again, if that's where all this leads). You can't avoid a dreadful action if doing so means that an even greater threat to human life and safety remains. (Perhaps we should have negotiated with Hitler...) I don't think that there is going to be much international rebuke for the action that America decides to take. None of the other Middle Eastern nations care for the Taliban (even Iran hates them), and none supported Tuesday's attacks. Most of the world's nations were thrown into high alert fearing that something was going to happen on their soil, even Russia. And this has majorly screwed with the global economy in a way that we can't even begin to see yet, what with domestic markets still closed and aircraft grounded. Who is going to criticize the US for going after those responsible for their own nation's market plunging? I think that the US is going to have a fairly free hand in this. Capture, dead or alive. That's what terrorists deserve. If alive, then trial. I don't favor the death penalty; once someone who has committed a terrible crime has been subdued, they are no longer a threat (as long as they aren't given free reign to manipulate events from the inside). As should be done with Milosevic, and what should have been done with Timothy McVeigh, throw them into a deep dark hole and leave them there, kept alive, but removed from any sort of presence, any sort of active life, any sort of public statements or preaching. No martyrs. Just rotting away, humbled, and forgotten. But if they happen to get killed in the course of apprehension, so be it. They all seem more than willing to die for their cause; they should be glad when they are given the opportunity. If I were in the position of a senior statesman or diplomat, I'd be damned if I would ever consider sitting down for peace talks with any of them. I was in Tucson and drove 2,700 miles back to Long Island -- through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and NY. The trip afforded me an opportunity to witness first hand many of the supportive, patriotic, mournful events across the country. Yesterday I left my Alexandria, VA condo and took the bus to the Pentagon metro stop as usual. It was a brand new bus driver and a trainer was with him giving instructions and encouragement as he went through the unfamiliar route and the crowded bus terminal at the Pentagon - busiest bus terminal and Metro stop in the area. Everyone said an extra thanks or word of encouragement to the driver and his trainer as they joked together and wished us all a great day. At 8:35, our biggest problem was that our boss called from the downstairs shuttle area, thinking she'd missed the shuttle from NASA Headquarters (about 2 blocks from the nation's capitol) to NASA Goddard out in Maryland. We were afraid one of us would have to drop everything and drive her. She called from her cell phone at 8:40 and said she hadn't missed it after all. Mayra (my office mate) and I said "Thank God!" and went back to work. Minutes later our secretary, Doreen, screamed after she'd answered the phone. She shouted that a plane had flown into one of the towers of the World Trade Center in New York. We dropped everything and ran to turn on the conference room TV, and spend the next few minutes running back and forth between the conference room TV and the phones, as we tried to call relatives and still tried to do some semblance of work. I was the only one sitting in the conference room watching when the second plane flew by and hit the south tower. It took several seconds to realize what I had just seen - I can't say that I still believe it. Our boss, called in from the road and I had to try to tell her what I'd just seen. She wanted to be told that they were going to be able to rescue people with helicopters from the roof, get the fire under control, etc. It was hard to describe the magnitude of what was happening while she couldn't see it. Nobody wanted to believe it. Mayra went off to a meeting with a colleague and Doreen said she didn't feel safe and started to make preparations to go home. I spoke with John and we were shocked but not worried. I went back to watch the TV. A few moments later, the screen split and they started showing scenes from DC. At first they thought something was happening near the White House - smoke from a lot near the Old Executive Building. But then they switched to the Pentagon and told us another plane had crashed into the building, or possibly just beyond it into the heliopad. We started hearing a number of other rumors, most of which later turned out to be false. But at the time, we were told that another plane had been seen coming toward the city that shouldn't be there, that a bomb had gone off at the State Department, that another suicide bomber had blown himself up on 15th street, etc. There was so much confusion, no one knew what to do. I wanted to wait for Mayra, not only to make sure she was safe but as my only means of transport out of the city. Before she left, Doreen had gotten a call from someone who told her that the Metro had shut down. It seemed likely. I live about 10 miles south west of the city in Alexandria. But, the order came to evacuate the building and I had to get out. In the following street confusion, I knew I had no chance of connecting with Mayra, so I started walking. I got most of the way to Memorial Bridge between the Washington Mall and Arlington, the only bridge across the Potomac that I was sure had sidewalks, but was told that it was closed to all traffic so as not to pose a target for further terrorist attacks. Police were also chasing people off the Mall for the same reason. But I did hear that the Metro was operating, except for a few stretches and, of course, the Pentagon and Airport stations. So, I got on and managed to get near enough to home to walk the rest of the way. I saw the first tower of the World Trade Center collapse before I left work. On the way home, I sat on the metro next to an Army officer who had been at the Pentagon when the plane struck. He was in a briefing near, but not immediately at, where it struck. He said first all military personnel who were nearby had been organized into squads to help evacuate the area and any of the injured they could reach. They when they had done all they could, he and most of the others who weren't required for the emergency response were sent home. He said the building shook like it was a terrible bomb, and then the room immediately filled with smoke. When I finally got home, I heard on the radio that the second tower had collapsed and that the damage at the Pentagon was worse than they had originally thought. It split the building open. I spent the afternoon listening to the radio and cleaning compulsively, and calling others to make sure everyone had gotten home safely. I think the cleaning was because I HAD to do something to make order out of chaos, if only in the little environment I control in my condo. This morning I carried my breakfast out onto the patio at the condo to watch the beginnings of the sunrise. I had to reassure myself that it was really going to rise. It seemed just as likely that it never would again. I started early and walked to the Van Dorn station, since there is no more Pentagon station stop to take the bus to. The buses seemed to be running, but I don't know where they were going. The metro was eerily quiet. Yesterday we had been jammed in to capacity as the city was evacuated, but people were talking to each other, even laughing, trying desperately to connect and reassure. Today everyone looked sad and introspective, even some tears. (I didn't cry myself until this morning at breakfast, yesterday there was just a great emptiness.) But what was unusual besides the quiet was the number of people holding hands or with arms together. In the seat in front of me a man and woman sat close with arms entwined. When she got up to get off at Crystal City, the man rose too, carrying her bag, and handed it to her with a kiss as she stepped out of the car. Then he sat back down and rode with me to L'Enfant Plaza. I know how they felt. I wanted John - just as he had wanted me to drive overnight back to our home in southern Virginia. But the President has said that it's important to the nation for the the Federal government to be open for business as usual today. Since so many will have to stay away for the sake of their children, who are all out of school, I thought it was important that I be here. I wanted my mother too, but am glad she never lived to see this day. My metro train went through the closed Pentagon stop and the closed airport stop. The skies are strangely quiet. When you live as close to a major airport as I do, it's the absence of continual air traffic that makes you very uneasy. And the usually jammed Pentagon stop was both quiet and dark. I only remembered at the last moment that I couldn't change trains there, as I ordinarily would if I'd taken the metro from Van Dorn. It's those little changes in the daily routine that drive home for me how much changed for the world yesterday. Nothing can be taken for granted anymore. The father was at work in his building which is directly across the street from where the plane hit the pentagon. While he was on the phone with his wife the plane hit and shook his building, though he was unhurt. He is still attempting to get home. Mary Louise (the mother) also has a nephew who was on the 51st floor of the first World Trade Center tower when it was struck. He was in a conference at the time, and the leader of the conference had been in the building during the 1993 bombing. He told the group that it felt the same as the 93 bombing and that everyone should leave immediately. Within 5 minutes the nephew was out of the building, and was outside as the second plane hit. I'm okay...I just got from home to Silver Spring (north point of DC) from downtown DC an hour ago...I only found out about everything when I arrived in the office around 10:00. It didn't seem real...so I ran into an office where everyone was watching the television and saw a picture of the Pentagon and the World Trade Center up in smoke. My heart collapsed. Immediatly, I knew I had to contact my mother...I knew she would be upset. To my terror, I couldn't call out on the office phone or on my cell phone....and then there were bad rumors coming in left and right, such as a couple of buildings a few blocks away being bombed such as the Old Executive Office Building and the State Department. To me, it seemed like the whole city was going to be going up in smoke...and who knew who was next. It all seemed surreal, but I settled down and realized that I would get out of the city as soon as was possible. I was almost afraid to look outside, based on all the things I was hearing on TV. Eventually, I was able to get through to my friend Charlie DeLong who works a couple of blocks away. We decided we would start walking home, so I ran to Charlie's office and we walked up 16th street for a few miles. The scene outside was something out a movie....I can only explain it as a quiet nervousness. Most people were like drones, confusion on their face, unsuccessfully trying to get through on cell phones. Eventually, I got a signal on my cell phone and had my roommate Lane pick us up...however traffic out of the city was horrible. To drive 3 miles took 45 minutes. I heard that the beltway around DC was gridlocked. I'm watching the news now and hearing about the celebrations in the streets of Palestine. I'm not sure what is more sickening; the picture of the plane crashing into the Trade Center or these people celebrating something so sickening. This is our fault for ever trying to negotiate peace in the middle east with these savages...These people have no sense to peace and justice. To celebrate the destruction of the modern world's central nervous system, I simply can not conceive of a greater evil. I'm nervous to consider the fallout from this whole affair. Anyway, I'm going to be getting out of this damn city sometime later today...getting away into the country side somewhere. I don't expect to be back into the office until Thursday...until then, I will keep my alert up and ears open. Hi all...I thought I would quickly touch base from down here near "Ground Zero". The horror and profound collective sadness is unrelenting. James and I left town for Wellfleet last Thursday amidst the acrid, unbreathable air, wearing face masks, showing ID's, and wheeling our luggage uptown where he had to park our car the night before. It took us almost three hours to get out of Manhattan. It all seems so insignificant in light of the horrible horrible reality so many others are facing. We came back Sunday night and now spend many many hours sharing first-hand stories with friends and colleagues. It is overwhelming. The Cooper students are back now. It is very hard to see this through the eyes of an 18 year old frightened of war, the draft and Bush. We are encouraging reflection and doing good work as much as possible...but there is little smiling and we observe a truly shocked community bonded in terror. The most heart wrenching aspect is that lower Manhattan is literally plastered with thousands and thousands of xeroxes of photos and "have you seen my Daddy" messages. There are little memorials everywhere with burning candles and flowers and people crying and hugging. We are doing a fair share of this too. The stories of friends of friends go on and on with each new tale more terrible than the last. Many are inconsolable. And remember...we are just neighborhood observers...thank God we did not lose a loved one. I can't even imagine what that would have been like...and is like... for the hundreds of thousands who have. Godspeed to us all. Again...forgive us for not having time to respond to your beautiful messages individually...that will come...we promise. It is so important to know that so many of us care about each other. It is almost the only thing left to count on now. I have attached two photographs taken by a dear friend who teaches photography here. He was standing next to me with a wide angle lens on the roof of Cooper when this all happened. I hope that you can open them. If you look near the left half of the photo you can see a building with a bill board of the Evian girl pouring water down on the world from the clouds. James and my loft is the fourth floor of that building and you can see our windows in the photo...amazing. Back at work this morning, although it was just announced that we have a mass meeting in the conference room in five minutes. Being 60 miles from NYC, and being a publisher (when all of our comrades work in NYC), we feel especially affected by all of this. I haven't spoken to my boss directly yet, but she was on the runway at Newark yesterday when the shit started, and saw the explosions from there. But she got home in one piece and is here now. I had the TV on until I went to bed at 12:00. Ray and I were on the phone for 2 1/2 hours, sometimes just watching CNN together, usually commentating and asking all the rhetorical questions, and ranting and raving in general. Back from the meeting. Just a "rally the troops" sort of thing. I had been thinking about Mike, and he called me at 7:30. More ranting and raving. He was pretty shaken up at the prospect of 200 firefighters missing (didn't seem as concerned about the cops!). He and Gina came back from the Bahamas Monday night and he said he was admiring the skyline from the plane. So much for that. As I was telling Ray, I always get lost in the Village, and in downtown Manhattan in general. Usually the only way I know which direction I'm heading is to look for the twin towers. When you're driving anywhere west or east of Manhattan, they're all you can see. It was amazing how tall they were. I can't imagine them not being there. And I know this is nothing compared to the millions of people who see them every single day. I'm glad I did make it up there to the top once. It will be interesting to see how things change after this. And it will be interesting to see how we retaliate. I can't imagine anyone not being in favor of a (carefully planned, of course) very bloody action. Anyway.... Dear friends and family, I am safe and well, and I hope you are too. After a few days of having trouble getting online and making calls, I thought I'd reconnect en masse by way of writing something of a mood piece from the walk I took today from my apartment on the Upper Westside to as far downtown as I could go and back up again along the water… My neighborhood, snug between Central Park and the Hudson, has resumed to near normalcy - restaurants, businesses, shops all open and people parading with shopping bags, cell phones, the usual accroutrements. Except there is that barely discernable haze in the distance, a slower pace, a New York Times in many hands, snippets of every overheard conversation fixated on the same subject. And kindness. People who inhabit what is usually considered the most anonymous of cities are making eye contact with each other, nodding. A white man places his hand on the forearm of the Arab-looking deli worker, asking, "How are you?" The closer I get to Times Square, the higher the density of American flags, on woman's tee-shirts and rhinestoned belt buckles, sold from every street vendor, inserted in the backpacks of bicycle messengers. Shoppers snap up any remaining postcards with the former skyline intact. Today the usual anxiety induced by too many billboards and tourists' camera bulbs and neon is heightened by the fact that my friend Dana, who is completing her last week at MTV, interrupted our call to say they were evacuating her building on my right and she had to go. False bomb scares at various landmark locations - Grand Central, the Empire State Building, here - demonstrate the nervousness of a city that may be able to put on a strong face but may not yet be ready to return to work. The sensory stimulation in this flashiest of 'hoods is always overwhelming, but today I pause to read the Wall Street Journal ticker and the latest headlines: how many bodies pulled, how many hijackers. Further downtown, the Empire State Building is highly policed, a convoy of Army trucks driving through Herald Square like some eerie war movie. I'd rather not be near the new tallest building in the city, so I quickly keep going. And so many shoppers. At Union Square, last night an NYU student taped blank poster board on the pavement for people to write messages. By Thursday afternoon, the place has become something of a makeshift monument, hundreds of people silenced and reading the endless maze of messages at their feet, art, prayers, quotes from poems, for peace. One woman holds her six-year-old daughter on her lap as she draws an outline of the Twin Towers filled with an elaborate mass of faces. A young woman wears angelic wings strapped to her back, fairy dust glitter on her face as she too peruses the outpouring of expression, on her cell phone. I write: "I am a writer with nothing to write…" Many gather around a central area covered with candles and one giant one, missing persons photographs, flowers, more messages. "We used to be strangers." "I love you more than ever New York." At least one man sitting in the midst of it sobs. Reporters quietly interview. It would be nearly silent if it were not for all the sirens. Below 14th Street, there is no traffic except the steady stream of emergency vehicles, ambulances, Army, dump trucks, police, Con-Ed, and so on and on. Here the streets take on an even eerier quiet, and the air thickens and grays, as if I've stepped through an invisible barricade into the dusty ghost town. Masks become increasingly more common, shirts tied over faces, bandanas colored with the American flag. My teeth ache inside and breathing feels strained. The side streets, locked up businesses with a few people sitting at sidewalk cafes, feel abandoned without the usual car traffic we become so accustomed to until it's gone. One giant church it seems I wander. At Houston Street, I have reached the civilian limits. I cannot go further without proof that I live there or am part of the rescue operation or press. Two people who apparently do live below, toss a ball back and forth on an empty street, wearing masks. A crowd of sometimes-sneezing or coughing onlookers is positioned at the southernmost outpost of grief: from Sixth Avenue, also aptly called Avenue of the Americas, we can look straight down into the hazy place where our compass used to be. That's what the WTC meant to so many of us with no connection in the financial world - when you get out of the subway disoriented, these twin buildings would always show south. Now we are left with the northern marker of the Empire State Building, which of late is glowing red, white and blue by dark. There is a lot of red, white and blue going on. I used to be dubious of patriotic types with the flag on their porches. I used to oppose even the idea of a military and our nation's cocky need to police the world. Now I understand how precious our America is, how "I love you more than ever New York." Yet I'm also extremely wary of that line when this sentiment goes too far: the old man, as I work my way back uptown, who is covered literally head to toe in the flag, waving the standard, firing "USA" slogans like artillery makes me nervous. For this moment, we search these faces for someone we know, thankful that we don't, still equally stunned.    As far west as you can go on 14th Street, before hitting the Hudson, a new slew of onlookers - there are pockets of them at every turn it seems, not voyeurs but people who need to experience this event in person - gather on the sidelines, with posters and flags, waving and cheering each and every emergency vehicle leaving the scene perhaps to return again. In each vehicle so many heroes. Tears come to my eyes as I join the applauders, horns honks in reply, a truck of tired firemen smiles and waves. In this hardest of times, to also find such joy. I wander the waterfront homeward, collecting these thoughts, jotting some of them down on an envelope, feeling the need to return and write for the first time since this happened. At Chelsea Piers, home of the ice rink that has been converted to a chilly morgue, volunteers transport the mountainous bags of donated clothing and food in shopping carts borrowed from grocery stores. Signs apologetically turn any new volunteers away. They divert any arriving bags to other locations, which I suspect will be overstocked also. To my right, lining 12th Avenue, the endless ambulances from New York and beyond, parked and waiting with engines running, probably, tragically to never find a use. The support, just for the sake of it, staggers the mind. I am rerouted around 50th to 57th Street, the walkway along the water blocked off by the familiar yellow police tape and officials at every intersection. This, says the officer at one corner, is the new Command Center now that the other one is rubble. An extremely high density of officers here apparently has to do with President George Bush's anticipated arrival in the city tomorrow. The officer says, "You plan for the worst and hope for the best." Having come full circle - a similar route to the one I took a week ago with my brother when I took a photo of him in front of the Twin Towers - I end my walk on the end of a pier, reaching out into the Hudson, just a swim away from Jersey. The sun shines obliviously on us, as we search the view of our own island below for the spot where those symbols of our city used to stand. We look at nothing, consider everything. A guy about my age cries into his girlfriend's embrace. Yes, this city, the world, will never be the same, but in many ways it has gotten better, was the overriding sense I got today. "We used to be strangers," that note says. We are no more. Many share - in addition to our grief, pride and bewilderment - a sense of almost unspeakable inadequacy because we can't volunteer and be such heroes. But we need not be firefighters to make our contribution. What becomes essential in life, I realize, is doing something true, making it count, communicating, making a connection. I know Lemming is down in the area there somewhere and I know Wolverine worked in the Trade Center as I ran into him several times grabbing a smoke outside the lobby. We were evacuated from the office yesterday, there's a lot of false alams going on, and I can understand the idea of trying to get back on track and working to implement the disaster recovery stuff that we have. I've been asking around about co-workers and friends of mine at our customer sites, nobody knows shit, it's all this horrible waiting game. One friend of mine, a fella by the name of Jack Murray, was a senior VP at the bank where I'm now consulting. When I first started with Hitachi some 17 years ago he befriended me on my first visit to his bank - "Hitachi? We'll it's about friggin time they got some Americans working for them!" is what he said when we first met (I was one of the first "local" staff engineers to be hired). Since then the guy has been lifesaver for me at work. I don't know how many times I'd run into some kind of bullshit or be stranded somewhere at the bank with security giving me a hard time about access and all I ever had to do was drop his name and the doors would open. I like to think that I also made it a little easier for him on my side as well. Many a time he'd call and say we're having some kind of trouble, not sure if it's your stuff or not, and I'd tell him no worry I'll be right over and figure it out. Word I'm getting is that he got out of the building with a co-worker but then turned to go back in, probably to be sure his people we're getting out ok. That was the last anybody saw of him. My father-in-law lost some very old and dear friends. You may have heard about the top FDNY brass that were killed, they were all very good friends of his. He's a retired fireman and former fire safety director for Chase Manhattan Bank. One of the guys that was lost grew up with my father-in-law, they went to grade school together and were friends for 50 years. The feeling I'm getting on the streets, in the subways and on the trains, is that the shock and numbness are beginning to wear off and people are really starting to get pissed off. I know the rest of the country is probably already to the anger stage. Here we've had the horror to delay the anger but I can see and feel it coming. New Yorkers tend to be pissed off people even on a good day, so this could get ugly. If it turns out that any country was directly involved (Iran, Iraq, whatever) we'll they'd be wise to close their UN offices and get the hell outta town before the mob starts scooping them up and hanging em from lampposts. I imagine that soon there'll be lists of the missing posted somewhere... I have to know but I'm already dreading it and afraid to look.
