You would not believe what this has done to the city. Have been glued to the tv for 2 days, unable to do anything. Attached is a shot I took from the Westside Highway and Christopher, as close as I could get. A makeshift parade formed as people cheered on workers leaving the scene and trucks filled with rubble. Mind blowing. No one I knew died, but there were some close calls. Many I knew saw the second plane hit and the people jumping out. I feel like the city will never be the same. I would go to the scene in a second to help if I could. Ciao, Jennifer, Thank you for writing, it was very thoughtful of you. Fortunately, my friends and family are all ok. We are among the lucky ones. As you know, Tuesday was indeed horrific. I was walking toward my office at a few minutes before nine, shortly after the first plane hit. We had a beautiful view of the Trade Center from 5th Ave, they stood larger than life. And after they survived the bombing in '93, to me they always symbolized strength and invincibility, for want of a better word. I used to think that the horror that the bombers intended - to topple one tower onto the other - was so unfathomable that it simply could never happen. I used to think that no God could ever allow it to happen. How wrong I was. I saw the smoke from the first plane crash, which everyone thought was a terrible accident. And no one realized how bad it was. We watched in horror and disbelief at the hideous explosion in the south tower. In an instant it was a fireball. I will never forget the sick feeling that came over me. Thinking of those people trapped inside. It was the worst thing I have ever seen in my life. Yet even then, as bad as it was, I don't think anyone expected the towers to fall. Upstairs in the office we heard on the radio about the Pentagon, then we heard that the south tower had collapsed, which was just too unbelievable. We went back downstairs and saw the sky filled with smoke. It was so strange to see the north tower standing by itself, it reminded me somehow of a wounded animal, I was so filled with a weird sadness. And when I saw the antenna start to tilt, I just covered my eyes because I knew what was happening, and it was too horrible to watch. And the next two days just got worse, with additional buildings falling, and others in danger of falling, and hundreds of police and firemen killed, and then bomb scares in the subways and Grand Central and other places. It's like we're living the unimaginable. I volunteered at a relief center yesterday and wound up collecting money and supplies with two other women near Bloomingdale's. It was the best thing I could have done, because the outpouring of support and caring and generosity was unbelievable. We collected almost $10,000 in four hours, and dozens of boxes of supplies for the rescue workers. People just couldn't do enough, all ages, colors, all walks of life, they all gave what they could. One man wrote a $2000 check on the spot, others gave wads of 20's, tens, whatever they could. Some high school kids apologized for not having more than a few quarters, and one boy gave me a poem he had written for the firemen, an old man who could barely walk leaned on his cane while he pulled a dollar out of his pocket. Few people passed by without stopping. And people were thanking and blessing us for the small thing we were doing! It was unreal. The owners of Felidia, a well known restaurant nearby, invited us in for lunch, another restaurant owner asked how he could get food down to the rescue workers, some women from a nearby office photocopied flyers for us, the manager of a convenience store donated cases of water and juice, and gave us boxes for the supplies. People were asking how they could help and where they could volunteer. It was all so touching and I felt good for the first time since this happened. I was so proud of my city and my fellow New Yorkers. I'm going to volunteer again over the weekend. Today I attended the noon service at St. Patrick's, and the crowds overflowed onto the street. The final hymn was "America the Beautiful" and there were not many dry eyes in the cathedral. Things are starting to get back to normal, at least on the surface, and away from downtown, but it will take a very long time to recover, and there is a general feeling that life will never be quite the same. What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record: "This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States. When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it. When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped. The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars! into discouraged countries. Now papers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans. I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes? Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles. ou talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon -! not once, but several times - and safely home again. You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here. When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke. I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake. Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. It was a typical rainy/drizzly "London" kind of day as we touched the ground at Heathrow on September 11. As a Flight Attendant for United Airlines, this was my second trip to London in 5 days, I was tired, jet-lagged,a bit grumpy, and just numb. Getting to the hotel and into a hot bath, and a comfy bed were the main objectives of my day. Before I left my house in Arlington Va.,on September 10, I had a nagging feeling, I did not want to take this trip, then I said to myself,"Snap out of it, you are getting paid to go to London! Again!" So, I went, unwillingly.,unaware of course that all hell was about to break loose, not only where I reside,(1 mile from the Pentagon)but also in beloved N.Y., where some of my dearest family and friends live and work. I awoke sometime around 4 p.m.(11:00 a.m. eastern time),I decided to go and check my return assignment for the next day, via the computers provided for us at the hotel. When I entered the computer room, another Flight Attendant was there, and he was obviously distraught."Ok, I'll bite" I thought, he told me of the planes going into the twin towers, and the Pentagon, I couldn't believe it! I immediately thought of my family, they did not know what trip I was assigned, they knew I was flying internationally, but occasionally we would be assigned to a domestic trip. Translation= she could be anywhere! I knew they must be worried sick. It took a couple of minutes for me to digest all this horrible information, I e-mailed one of my friends in D.C. whom I knew did not have a television, gambling that she would be on-line, and she was. She contacted my family to let them know I was in England, safe, and that I would try to contact them soon. The friend e-mailed again to say our families in N.Y. were ok, Thanks be to God. Then, I thought of my friends who were flying that day, were they ok? Were they flying? Were they stuck in Canada? Where were they? The feelings, events, behavior I witnessed for the following days, and weeks since, I liken to experiencing a death in the family, that of a close family member, anyway. I prayed a lot, cried in spurts, and mostly thanked God for my life, all of it, the good, the bad, and the in-between. I may not be perfect, but I am here, and I was spared that day. My friends were spared that day, my family was spared that day, their friends were spared that day. I am truly blessed. Due to the evil acts of those on September 11, many of us at United and other companies as well were "laid off", "furloughed", "canned", whatever you want to call it. It was a nice break. I needed it, maybe we all did. On March 18th, I climbed back on the horse, came back from being off for six months, and took my first flight as a United Flight Attendant. Was I scared? Truth? Yeah, A little. Am I still scared? Truth? Yeah, a little. This week I again was assigned two London trips in one week. I have a new perspective on things now, not just the job, life. I thought I knew what was important before September 11. Now I am certain I know what is important in life.I don't think it's how fast, or how many times you can circle the globe, it's not how much money you have, or don't have. It's not what school(s) you went to, or who you know, or the car(s) you drive, or how big your house is, or the neighborhood it's in. It's how you treat people, and the caliber of the human being you are while you are here.In the end, all that other crap doesn't matter. As I travel from state to state, country to country,I find myself falling into the "what if" mode. What if that guy is a terrorist bastard? What if this family is "scouting" this flight? Do we even know who these people are? I pray that the people in the area where I live, in the most powerful city in the United States of America make the right decisions when it comes to fighting these terrorists, and Do Not relent and become complaceant in how we deal with visas and visitors to our country, and that homeland security is improved as well as it can possibly be. Every day, there are people who wake up without their sons, daughters, husbands, brothers, sisters, cousins,friends, and most importantly moms and dads. These people will forever be affected by the events on 9/11 because our government could not prevent this "mess".When you think you have it bad, think again, you could be them. Life is short people, enjoy each minute with those you love, and those you know love you. Don't sweat the small stuff, and stop being so self-absorbed, if you have a little too much time or money on your hands, there are a lot of folks who can use your help. Friends and family, 'just thought I'd let you know how things are going today from a DC perspective. It's been terrible, but with so far a veil of unreality. As we were getting started with the day's work, our secretary screamed and told us she'd just heard that a plane had hit the world trade center in NY. We rushed to the conference room where we are lucky enough to have a TV. We were walking back and forth making phone calls and trying to do some semblance of regular work, but spending most of the time watching the news. I was sitting in the conference room watching the TV when the second plane flew into the south tower. It was one of those things where I just couldn't believe what my eyes had seen, I guess the news people couldn't either, since it took them a few seconds to realize what had happened. Before, we'd been trying to convince ourselves that it must have been some horrible accident, but at that moment we knew that it wasn't an accident at all. Even though nothing in DC had happened yet and we didn't have any premonitions that it would, Doreen was already making plans to go home. But Mayra had a meeting across town. She didn't want to go but another colleague told her we shouldn't react to terrorism like that, but should keep on doing our jobs. So, they left by metro for Dupont Circle and their meeting. Only a few minutes later, we were watching the TV and they switched to footage of black smoke billowing from near the White House (by the Old Exec. Office Building). Before I could even react from that, Doreen got a call that the Pentagon had been struck. It was maybe another 30 seconds before we heard confirmation of that on the TV. I was still watching when the south tower of the world trade center collapsed - again, it was impossible to believe what I saw. Right after that, I was ordered out of the building and informed that all Federal buildings were being evacuated. Our boss was out at Goddard in Maryland, and she called back frantic when she heard about the world trade center. I haven't heard from her since, but assume that she wasn't able to get back in the city, since everything entering is closed down. I hope she went home. Doreen left shortly after we heard about the Pentagon. She went home, or tried to. I haven't heard if she made it out yet. I stayed put waiting for Mayra until our building was evacuated and we were forced to leave. We had been told that the metro was closed, so I started to walk home. (even though it's about 10 miles) As I was walking I heard on someone's radio (all the cars were in the streets but nobody was going anywhere - too many out at once and a lot of the streets and bridges closed, so in effect nowhere for lots of people to go) that a bomb had gone off in front of the State Department. When I got near the memorial bridge, we were told the bridges were closed into Virginia. But the metro was running after all, so I got on and headed home. I had to walk from the metro, since there were no taxis running and no traffic moving even if they wanted to, and I had no idea whether there would be a bus anytime worth waiting for. On the metro on the way home I sat next to a military person (Army? green uniform anyway) who had been in the Pentagon when the plane hit it. Actually, he had been pretty close. They were in a briefing and felt the shock. The room filled with smoke in a matter of 1 or 2 minutes, he said. They were quickly organized into teams to make/bear litters and get the wounded out - since the people where he had been were right there but not injured. When they had done what they could and had to evacuate, he was among the ones sent home. Most of what I've heard on the national news is about the 4 planes. In DC, it's been reported that there was a car bombing in front of the State Department, a man blew himself up on 15th street, and we still don't know what the big fire near the White House was from. Congressman Moran was interviewed from where some of the Congress are sequestered near the Capitol and confirmed the first two - but I haven't heard anything else on the news about it. I guess we will get the details in the next day or two - some of these could be just rumors, but I saw the smoke from near the White House myself. You could see if from our office. I found out that shortly after I went home on the metro (which goes right under the Pentagon) that they closed that leg and started busing people between Pentagon City and Arlington Cemetery. We did stop for awhile near the Pentagon, but the train continued through. I was really nervous about being possibly trapped on the Metro, but it was the only way out of the city. Now I'm safe in Alexandria and am in shock listening to the news. I hope my neighbors understand, but I've been cleaning frantically to keep doing SOMETHING. I heard from Mayra, she got home ok. 'still haven't heard from Kathie and Doreen, but I assume they are ok because Doreen got out before either Mayra or I did and Kathie was outside of the city headed back when things started happening in DC. No idea what tomorrow will bring. 'take care.
