<text>my real family not my birth family all checked in with messages of
love and concern. My two sister-in-laws, their new mates, and their
kids, my native american friends, and Mike and Roger, and my AA
buddies, the son of my Buffalo friend who I have know growing up from a
fourteen year old. So I am rich in love even when I have a kneejerk
reaction wishing it was the birth family. And among my local people, there
will be people who need us to be wih them as they get the bad news.

I am ok but I wake up very early and I can't sleep again because my mind
start running.

A son of my Indian friend Ronnie, was on a construction job nearby.
They are ironworkers. He told her he and the workers volunteered to
help the rescue the day of the fire. The first day they were asked to
evacuate, but now the
ironworkers are part of the teams helping to clear the debris to try to
find people.

The hospital is still in readiness, still without customers.

Atlantic Avenue is still cordoned off for emergency traffic, but it is
empty of traffic except city buses, not even parked cars. People are
dropping off gifts of food to the cops that man the intersection. The
cop presence is enormous. Never saw so many cops or cop vehicles in my
life. They must have emptied the precincts of every one. Those who
might be in plainclothes are in some sort of uniform, and where they ran
out of cars, they are out on bicycles.

I think Atlatntic Avenue may be cordoned off because it is an Arab
shopping street. Besides being a very upscale Yuppie neighborhood, this
is also the Arab neighborhood of Brooklyn, There were cops outside the
synagogues yesterday.

My real estate friend, went to check on a building of his behind a
department store, and he was told by a cop that they have been told
there may be random car bombings. That's all we need to drive the
frenzy. We can't start doing racial profiling and isolate any Arab from
the streets, or run because an arab has parked a car at a meter.
Arabs are a lot of the store owners and workers around here, newsstands,
grocery stores, food take out places.

People are still milling, out on the streets, eating with friends
instead of going home, but it closes early, probably out of emotional
exhaustion. At least that's how I came home and conked out.

A lot of the normality is starting today, schools, libraries, museums,
etc reopening.

I went last night to a synagogue service on my block. I sort of new
instinctively they would likely be doing a special service. During the
prayer for the sick which is traditional, people called out the names of
people they were worried about, and everyone which is unusual said the
mourner's prayer. we read out loud responsively prayers for just peace,
and for the country, these are standard prayers out of the prayer book
but they had stronger meaning. The service ended with singing first the
star spangled banner, then america the beautiful (all three verses)
which are both in the prayer book and then the israeli natl anthem. I
was glad the cops in front of the synagogue, who were not likely to be
jewish heard a loud singing of america's anthems.

Yesterday's news said Guiliani ordered 6000 body bags, this morning they
say the order is up to 11,000,

But the news gets it wrong a lot. Last night we heard another three
buildings had collapsed, this morning I read they are compromised but
not down.

So the surrealness is a city doing more or less normal life, and then
the entire bottom of Manhattan, about a three mile stretch, totally
closed off. My friends Mike and Roger live more orless on the boundary,
they said no stores were open, they took a subway to the village to eat
and buy groceries.

My bank, and headquarters, are in buildings on wall street, and a block
from the WTC, I cant get thru to find out my checking acct status. the
ATM machine in a brooklyn branch is out of service. I did get cash the
day of the planes, but I want to make a deposit to cover some checks
which may or not get processed. I have a $3000 no bounce credit line on
the account so it is not drop dead necessary, but I may try to get
uptown and make a deposit at an uptown branch. But I'll call first to
see if the system is working anywheres.

You will hear this on the TV but families are going to the crisis center
to try to locate families. and the radio station interviews the
individuals a lot of "hoping for the best, fearing the worst"

the fire dept has a good handle on who they have missing and its 300+

I am going to go out and get the papers, because they are sold out
quickly.

tuesday was Nathan's birthday, the day of the attack. I have some of
the newspapers for Karen and Dennis to put aside for him for when he is
older. They are both news people by profession.

All,

Probably missed a bunch of people, but just wanted to let most of you know that I am ok. I was in the Pentagon, on the side next to the explosion. We felt the explosion rock the building, and people shouting to evacuate shortly after that. That side of the building was the new construction side for those of you familiar with it. It was composed primarily of Army and Navy Staff offices. I have heard from some of the Navy staff personnel and they are ok, but not all. Please think of them.

Thanks so much for your concern. For those of you who don't know I work for J-34, the Joint Staff Combating Terrorism branch of the Armed Services. We have alot of work to do.

Much love,
J</text>

<text>My husband, daughter and I live in Pocatello, Idaho. My husband is in the Army National Guard. The day of 9-11-01 he went on high alert for call up to active duty if necessary. Many of his family members called to see if he was going to have to go to war. At that time, we didn't know anything and could only say that is unit is on high alert. After the attacks you could no longer drive up to the National Guard Armory, or the Reserve offices. They had concrete blockades across the entrance, which I am told by husband, to prevent any terrorist from bashing into the armory. One year later the cement blockades are still up and there is no longer any parking in the front of the armory or reserve unit.

When I got to work that day, 9-11-01, our office was buzzing and we had hooked up a television in the conference room. Everyone would just sit and watch the events in between trying to get some work done.

I work for a non-profit low income advocacy agency and when the donations started pouring in to New York I can honestly say that there was frustration in our Agency that so much money was going into New York which was going to affect other states so much as far as people contributing top their local food banks, etc. We did feel some of the effects because our local United Way had a lower amount of contributions this cycle.

Personally, I have frustration because the survivors or families of the dead in New York are going to basically be millionares out of this when there are still people around the country that have lost family members in tragic events that had to make it on their own. And the US Government is one of the biggest contributors to this 911 Fund. This will only affect other funding that the government is involved with, like my Agency. I think the government should NOT contribute money to this fund and let private donors handle giving whatever money they feel is necessary. The Oklahoma people got nothing - and look at all the children/babies that died.

I just felt like if this was an archive of views and feelings from the 9-11 tragedy that this should be included.

My heart does go out to those that had to pick up their lives after the tragedy of losing someone in that attack.

May 2, 2002

The feeling still lives inside of me. The memories are as vivid as yesterday. The utter shock was like nothing Id ever known. My body was trembling, my heart was throbbing and my knees were knocking. I didnt even realize tears were flowing down my face, which wore a sorrowful anguish.
Screams woke me from a deep sleep. Jumping out of bed and running into the den I found my family surrounded by the television. I made my way around to see what the cause of my awakening was. What was the cause of everyones painful stare? What I saw I didnt believe. I had an urge to pinch myself feeling as if this could only be a dream. A plane hit the World Trade Center. People were jumping out to escape the fires of death. Suddenly another plane emerges and Bam hits the second tower. As the explosions crumbled the buildings dust and smoke filled the air. People were scattering and dodging debris. Originally being a New Yorker my heart dropped at the sight of my city. And being a human being my soul cried at the sight of such tragedy. Within seconds lives were destroyed. Too many people died never getting the chance to even say goodbye.
I thought about the woman who walked into the wrong building. The janitor whos wife and four kids depended on his paycheck. The woman that was getting married to the love of her life. The kids playing with blocks in the daycare center. The man that had plans to work his way up from the mail room. Then I began thinking on a more personal level. I wondered if by chance my aunt or cousin ended up on that side of town. I wondered if my friend who worked blocks away had been that woman who drifted in the wrong building. Because of the lack of communications all I could do was wonder, worry and wait.
Later finding out that they were all alright I realized how Life is so ironic. In such a trance at first it was hard to understand. I have always thought that I would not (or maybe hoped) I wouldnt be around to witness cataclysmic events. I think I wanted to subconsciously buy into the idea that terribly bad things dont happen, that all people are good. Well thats not true. The events of September 11, 2001 brought me quickly back into reality. I have to cherish and forever be grateful for the people in my life. I am thankful for everyday God gives me and I am proud of the way we as Americans and people dealt with this.

Sue there was a plane that took off from PA. The Airforce interecepted it or
shot it down or it crashed The news reports are panicked and sketchy. You are safe.
There has been nothing mentioned yet about a threat to The Base. We did see 20 or 30
Federal Police cars Unmarked Black and white cars vans rushing towards The Base when
I got the boys. Security is very High where you are. Your Mom is bedside
herself. Everything will be ok. I think your mom will feel like she's helping
in some way if you let her get the kids. I did get my kids for two reasons. I
didn't want them hearing about the attacks and thinking Leroy was at his normal
Pentagon meeting and TWO because I know these Terrorists would love to shock with
killing kids. It's up to you... I think your ok but I hope they let you come
home soon.

I don't know what to do. I'm scared. There are alot of fire/police sirens.
Do you know any more than me. We have found a TV and are going to set it
up. Is anything going on around here. Someone just came by and said a
plane has went down in PA.

I don't know if schools are safe. See if you can get JH. I feel like I'm
trapped.

No one is allowed on or off base at the moment. We've been told that they
have confirmed the attacks are terriost attacks. Our phone lines have
been shut down. I can't get any calls out and I've been trying my cell phone and
that doesn't work at the moment. It could be that everyone on base is
trying to use there Cell Phone.

We were told that they have sent everyone out of the important buildings here on
base.

Could you call JH, Mom & Leroy and let them know that I am fine. But I
cant get a call out to them. Everyone is scared!!!! And at the moment we are
not allowed to leave.

We have aircraft flying around our building and others. I hope it is our
people securing our base.

              <text>hey julie,
thanks for the thoughts. everyone here is ok (as far as i know). they evacuated our building as soon as the pentagon was attacked (they evacuated most of downtown), and we had to walk 4-5 miles home since the traffic was gridlocked AND the subway was closed. i sort of freaked out and sara and i drove to Ocean City, MD on the beach about 150 miles away and stayed overnight. I just got back in.

I have a couple friends in new york (both are ok), one worked in the wtc and saw the second plane crash and people jumping from the building. the other worked about two blocks away and said she was "running for her life" when the buildings came down.

It is all so surreal julie. i'm still very shaken. Our office is open today, but people are kinda walking around in a daze. some folks knew people who worked in the pentagon, etc. i dont know how they are. i'm still very frightened. but i figure, this is probably the safest place to be since the president is at the whitehouse. there are jets patrolling the sky, etc.

you know, i was thinking yesterday that fuck it. give israel back to the the fucking palestinians. it's not worth all this. not just here, but in israel and the palestinian victims, etc.

Here is your horoscope for Tuesday, September 11

Yesterday's drive is replaced by the desire to protect yourself. Personal space, either physical or psychic, is at a minimum. Your roots are exposed, and your emotions are naked. Your own good works come back to save you.

              <text>Attention University Community:

Following is the latest information, as of Saturday morning, from Syracuse
University of campus activities in response to Tuesday's terrorist incidents.
This information supplements previous information packets.

U.S. Flag Flies Atop the Carrier Dome

This afternoon, the Carrier Dome staff installed an American flag measuring 6
feet by 10 feet to the center lightning rod of the Dome roof. The flag is flying
at half staff and is illuminated at night by a spotlight that was also installed
today.

Remarkable Response to Call for Clothing Items Destined for NYC Relief
Workers

Under the category of "Wow!": The effort begun Thursday and ending Friday
at 5 p.m. to gather T-shirts and socks to be donated to relief workers in New
York City was nothing short of phenomenal. Close to 200 boxes and bags of
new shirts and socks were collected at the Schine Student Center and
Hendricks Chapel. Physical Plant staff transported the thousands of items to
a tractor trailer at ShoppingTown Mall; Salvation Army drivers will deliver
them to waiting relief workers in Manhattan. Many of the shirts and socks
had messages from the donors such as "We love you," "You are our heroes"
and "How can we ever thank you." Says Pam Kirwin Heintz, director of the
Center for Public and Community Service: "The human spirit is well and
strong at SU and in our community in spite of the pain it is suffering at the
moment." Indeed.

CPCS Provides Shuttle to Regional Transportation Center

Any student needing transportation from campus to the Regional
Transportation Center terminal Saturday or Sunday should call 443-4566,
and the Center for Public and Community Service's on-call van drivers will be
dispatched to pick up and transport the student from his/her residence to the
Regional Transportation Center. Students need to allow enough time
because the drivers need to get to campus to pick up the van. Students
should be prepared to show their SU I.D. in order to access the van.
Beginning Monday, this service will continue, but students should call CPCS
at 443-3051 Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. After 5 p.m. weekdays,
the Saturday-Sunday procedure described above should be followed.

Aid for Students Directly Affected by Tuesday's Terrorist Acts

Any SU student who has lost a supporting parent, custodian or spouse as a
result of the terrorist attacks in New York City, Washington, D.C., or
Pennsylvania will be afforded special financial consideration. Those who
must take an official leave of absence for the current (Fall 2001) semester
will receive a grant for all pending charges for the fall semester and will be
eligible to receive special financial consideration in the Spring 2002
semester.

Students whose supporting parent, custodian or spouse has lost
employment and/or income because of the terrorist attacks in New York City
and Washington, D.C., will be eligible for special grant assistance for the
current academic year. Such responses will be individual in nature and will
be predicated on the particular circumstances of each case.

All students who have been affected by these tragedies should make their
situations known to the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship Programs in
Archbold North as soon as possible.

Opportunity to Reflect Offered on the Web, in the Syracuse Record

A reminder: Members of the University community are invited to offer their
reflections on Tuesday's tragedies in New York City, Washington, D.C., and
Pennsylvania to be shared with others who are affected by what has
happened. Those who would like to share their feelings are invited to send
expressions to the following e-mail address: sunews@syr.edu. Individuals
are asked to provide name and hometown or place of current residence (e.g.:
Fayetteville, Solvay, etc.). Messages will be posted on a special page of the
Syracuse University News site (http://sunews.syr.edu) and will be printed in
an upcoming issue of the Syracuse Record.

Academic Assistance Available to Students

Another reminder: Students who are experiencing emotional stress or who
are having difficulty meeting their academic demands as a result of
Tuesday's terrorist acts may call the Division of Student Support and
Retention for assistance. Academic counselors are available to listen and
make appropriate referrals to other campus support services. They will also
assist students to develop an action plan and follow their issues through to a
suitable resolution. Students seeking assistance can call 443-5045 or email
sustart@syr.edu.

Counselors, Chaplains Available

One more reminder: For those who want to talk about Tuesday's incidents,
counselors for students are available through the Counseling Center at
443-4715 during the day and 443-2666 after 5 p.m.; the chaplains of
Hendricks Chapel are available at 443-2901; and the Employee Assistance
Program is available for faculty and staff at 443-1087.

In today's Washington Post, it lists Dave Scales as one of our fallen comrades. Can anyone confirm if it was our Dave Scales and if so if anyone knows of any services planned for him?

Sharon,

I hope you are doing well. Please see the note [above]. Have you any way of checking if the Dave Scales listed as missing since 11 Sep is the Ltc David Scales from AWC Seminar 85G (graduating Jul 00)?. Is there a hot line or
website with information on the missing (I have the list, but I want to speak with someone who can match a social security number to a name). I left you Dave's SSN on your voice mail.

Thanks,

Dave

Dave,
I'm okay. I have already checked and am very saddened to say that it is indeed our Dave Scales. His home of record is Cleveland.

All,

Attached are funeral arrangements for Dave Scales and address information for his family.

There will be two events next week for Dave. The ceremony on the 10th will be performed by his office (OCAR) in Crystal City. The funeral on the 11th will be at Fort Myer [Arlington Cemetary] and will be done by OSD. Per CPT Carle, we are invited to both services. She says Dave's family will be present at both as well.

Subject: Message From Mrs. Scales

AWC Friends,

I received a hand written thank you letter from Dave Scales' wife, Trisha, yesterday. She asked that I share it with each of you. Recall we assembled packages for both Trisha and Dave's parents. Each package included a sympathy card with all of our names, Dave's Air War College
Paper, some of Dave's E-mail correspondence, Ed Herbert's letter, AWC class dinner photos.
I also enclosed a letter with the photos associating our names with our faces and noting that Nat and Marsha Lee were now overseas. Mike Flores also built and presented the framed class declaration and rememberance to Trisha, which also listed each of our names. The text of the thank
you letter is below.

"Thank you so very much for the cards, photos, and David's e-mails and War College paper. How well I remember his insecurity and struggle with the course and the paper. Even though he excelled at anything he ever
attempted academically, David was always so humble about his abilities!
Without his encouragement, support, and phone help, however, I never would've lived through some of my college courses! He was my biggest cheerleader, and I miss him so much.

Your cards and letter will take on greater significance to Ashton as he grows into manhood. It is so important that he knows how many people genuinely liked and respected his father. He has not far to look for a role model - his father's warmth and good humor are validated in every
card or note we have received. Those traits hold anyone in good stead in life. Thank you, again, and please share this note with all of the "Seminar 85G" class participants. May God be with each of you always!

Sincerely,
Trisha & Ashton Scales"

<text>Glad to hear he's okay. The sheer magnitude of the attack still seems somewhat surreal to me--I don't think I even know 5000 people total. It's hard for me to imagine that so many people are now just gone, just because some people decided that they wanted to either get some publicity or just
plainly because they're nuts. Also, the willingness with which people seem to be willing to give up their civil liberties, and some of the paranoid reactions about closing borders, allowing monitoring of calls, and watching anyone who changes majors to things like piloting and nuclear engineering do make me nervous--the last thing we need is a police state. The way I see it, there are a million ways in which terrorists can wreak havoc, and if they have enough planning and resources, there's pretty much no way to stop that. The only thing you can do is try to make it difficult for terrorists to cause damage without living in paranoia--looking over your shoulder all of the time is no to enjoy life, and as we have seen, life is all too short, so every moment is precious.

Take care.</text>

              <text>Friends,

Like most of you I was stunned, scared, and mystified by the attacks in New York, Washington DC and in Pennsylvania. It was hard to deal with considering I was at the World Trade Center on Sunday, buying tickets to a play, eating lunch at SouthWest NY, shopping at Borders, catching a train, and walking the dog. I was in New York visiting my uncle who lives in Battery Park, in an apartment building 3 blocks from the WTC. (He is safe now -he was evacuated- and in Hobokken, NJ). Knowing he and another friend were in NYC and that Bekah was in DC made this tragedy really strike home with me. I am so grateful to know that at least they are safe. I hope each of you has found a way to function today, though I imagine it was rough for all of us. Elisa, I don't know what it could have been like as a teacher, I hear from the kids I used to babysit that they were scared and didn't quite know what was going on. Davey, once again you are a reporter at an amazing (though tragic) time in history. I guess we will all remember September 11, 2001, for the rest of our lives. My thoughts are with you all and I hope none of you have suffered any personal loss in this tragedy.

Love always, E</text>

Greg Rodriguiz died in the World Trade Center bombing. He worked for
Cantor Fitzgerald. Greg was a NY CISPES activist in 1989 and 1990.
Many of us remember him as the first to volunteer for civil disobedience
for the cause of ending the war in El Salvador. Greg's parents wrote
this letter to the Editor of the New York Times.

Not in our son's name
(letter of parents of son missing at World Trade Center)

Saturday, Sep 15, 2001 8:35pm

[Phyllis and Orlando Rodriguez's son Greg is one of the
Trade Center victims. They have asked that people share
these letters this copy of letter sent to NY Times as
widely as possible.]

Not in Our Son's Name

Our son Greg is among the many missing from the World
Trade Center attack. Since we first heard the news, we
have shared moments of grief, comfort, hope, despair,
fond memories with his wife, the two families, our
friends and neighbors, his loving colleagues at Cantor
Fitzgerald / ESpeed, and all the grieving families that
daily meet at the Pierre Hotel.

We see our hurt and anger reflected among everybody we
meet. We cannot pay attention to the daily flow of news
about this disaster. But we read enough of the news to
sense that our government is heading in the direction
of violent revenge, with the prospect of sons,
daughters, parents, friends in distant lands dying,
suffering, and nursing further grievances against us.
It is not the way to go. It will not avenge our son's
death. Not in our son's name.

Our son died a victim of an inhuman ideology. Our
actions should not serve the same purpose. Let us
grieve. Let us reflect and pray. Let us think about a
rational response that brings real peace and justice to
our world. But let us not as a nation add to the
inhumanity of our times.

Copy of letter to White House:

Dear President Bush:

Our son is one of the victims of Tuesday's attack on
the World Trade Center. We read about your response in
the last few days and about the resolutions from both
Houses, giving you undefined power to respond to the
terror attacks.

Your response to this attack does not make us feel
better about our son's death. It makes us feel worse.
It makes us feel that our government is using our son's
memory as a justification to cause suffering for other
sons and parents in other lands.

It is not the first time that a person in your position
has been given unlimited power and came to regret it.
This is not the time for empty gestures to make us feel
better. It is not the time to act like bullies. We urge
you to think about how our governement can develop
peaceful, rational solutions to terrorism, solutions
that do not sink us to the inhuman level of terrorists.

Sincerely,

Phyllis and Orlando Rodriguez

              <text>> Dear Lynne
>
> Words can not describe the horrror that I have seen on television for
> the
> past 5 hours.
>
> An attack on The United States is an attack on the whole civilized
> world !!
>
> All Australians feel sympathy for you and your countrymen at this
> tragic
> time.
>
> The evil of these terrorists is beyond belief.
>
> My only hope is that the US and all it's allies will now have the
> resolve to
> hunt down
> and eliminate this scourge from the Earth instead of having to make
> excuses.
>
> My heart goes out to the countless people who lost their lives and
> those who
> have lost loved ones.
>
> The world will never be the same, but we will get through it together.
> We depend on you as the leaders of freedom and peace. Long live the
> USA and it's people and way of life.
>
> My sIncere condolences
> John Flynn (Australia)

Sorry to keep emailing you, but I'm a little freaked out right now. My parents are supposed to fly out to LA tomorrow. I called my father's dealership and just talked to him, so they are both safe, thank god. I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't been able to talk to him.

Also, on TV a minute ago, there was a report an unsubstantiated report that there has been an explosion at the actual White House.

Logan airport and most major airports are now closed...the phones here are dead as well as internet...their evacuating the Tower, I don't know about my building though...I was in a meeting in the Observatory across the street on the top floor when it happened, then we heard the news and then sirens outside - people in the meeting started to freak out. Gov. Swift is going to speak on TV in a few minutes.

              <text>Dear Meryl!

It is so good to hear from you! You finally seem to have made it to the real world, including electricity and phone services... Well, I haven't made it there yet, I still enjoy the privileges of lazy student life (occasionally
interrupted by bouts of studying for my finals in four weeks)!

What you wrote in the last part of your mail about the current situation in the United States confirmed some of my fears. Not only in the US the climate has gone weird. Most people I know have been spending the last few days in
front of the TV set or reading the papers. Everywhere in the country, especially in Berlin, life doesn't seem to flow at its normal pace, everything has slowed down. There have been bomb warnings at the Foreign Office, Berlin, and
for some skyscrapers in Frankfurt, everybody is nervous as hell. People hardly speak of anything else all day. Thousands have been assembling in front of the US embassy in Berlin to express their grief.

However, even though everybody is shocked by what happened, there is also a growing sense of apprehension about what might be happening next. Among the people in front of the embassy some were carrying signs reading: "No revenge,
please! No World War III!" - that probably expresses the general feeling over here quite well. Just like you, I am also afraid of what your "infamoulsy idiotic president" (I quote and I totally agree!) might prove capable of doing. Even in Europe, there is talk of war by now which has been increased by NATO's decision to apply clause 5 of the Washington Treaty.

Even though terror will always be unpardonable, I think it is time for the US to rethink some of their foreign-policy. Something clearly has to be wrong there if people in the streets of Beirut and in the West Bank start celebrating at the sight of thousands of innocent people suffering and dying. So much hatred against the United States has been able to build up in this part of the world due to America's colour-blindness in the Middle East conflict.

I don't have the feeling though, that people are willing to think these kind of thoughts, to investigate the causes of terror and hatred. It is easier to call for blood revenge and to drop a few bombs on Afghanistan. The atmosphere is heated up enough to support this way of action.

Meryl, I don't want this to sound so bloody critical of US-politics (the Europeans aren't that much better....they just do not have the kind of weapons the US commands), but I am afraid of your President's next decisions. I already thought it a total disaster when he was elected, but in a situation like this it makes me feel angry and helpless to think that someone like him carries major responsibility about what is going to happen next.

Have you heard anything from either Yoti, Jesse or Anna Piotrowska in NY? I haven't been able to reach them since Tuesday, I really hope that all of them are safe.

Okay, that was my contribution to the public opinion news you were starved for....

Meryl, lots of love and a big hug from

Andrea
