I got in ok this morning went to bed late watching the news. Train was totally empty and so is the city. Train came in on a regular schedule. Every one is dazed and the towers are still smoking. The wind is shifting and all the smoke and smell is coming up here. Cops fire sirens jet fighters everywhere. My boss is totally upset. Things look real bad for us for the next few months. All the airlines are cutting there schedules when they resume. Continental doesnt even have flights on the schedule for the next few days. So its not that people arent going to be traveling its that there is nothing to travel on! I think my worries are going to happen sooner than i thought. Ethan ----- Hi Ethan Dana forwarded me your email. Thank you for your thoughts. I was moved By what you wrote about breathing. I hadn1t thought of paying attention in that context. It feels like what you are saying about breathing is also about letting feelings go on, and also go through you (as opposed to holding them). Breathe them in and out. Am I in right? I guess this is a good way to deal with instability and uncertainty/change, which are very uncomfortable places for humans to be in. A few individuals have trained themselves to be able to live with the awareness of smaller or lesser degrees of uncertainty and flourish... Though in most Western hero stories even the hero settles down in the end. Eastern hero myths don1t seem to always resolve with a banishment of uncertainty/evil, but a transformation of it instead. Sort of the difference between slaying the dragon and going home, and transforming the dragon into a newt and going on. I think I1m having fun digressing here because this point is pretty far out from what you were talking about. Discomfort with a new context will drive people to do very extreme things. One extreme thing is to watch the TV news all day long, hoping that discomfort will pass. If you think about it, it1s pretty extreme. Another is to go to war. Another (rarer) is to wake up and realize that the conditions of the discomfort already exist and that we can rise to hold it. That1s hard to do. It makes me feel like we make a difference. You are absolutely right about what you wrote about breathing. It is The best way to deal with every type of feeling and emotion. As an actor Who has studied and worked in theatre extensively around the world I have Been lucky to have met some of the most wonderful thouroughists (?should be a word!) on breathing. Just when I think I know a lot, I work with someone else who brings me to a realization that we will always hold on to our breath in some way. TV is in my opinion over rated and cumbersome. I agree watching TV mostly doesn't accomplish any change other than to either give information to update with or to overload with because it quickly becomes rather stagnant. I much rather like listening to the BBC or NPR. Still not any real replacement for human contact. But we need images around the world when you are not there in person. We want so much to be a part of that tangible quality that you as New Yorkers have to identify with. It must seem bizarre to say. You can really breathe it in. It is exemplified on how Rudy moves forward. He is a strong man. Wow. The hell with Bush, Rudy deserves a hug! That man knows how to change. Your transformation of evil ideas started me rolling: I loved your digression about changing the dragon into a newt. I am happy to slay the dragon or change it into a newt but I think that there is more benefit to changing it, for then we at least have made a difference for the better, rather than making a void for which yet another dragon can take it's place. I don't know. It's hard to know what outcome our actions will bring. Did we ever think Hiroshima would turn ancient Japan into a financial superpower with constitutional restrictions on acts of War? I wonder. What is so apparent right now is that which does not destroy us only makes us stronger. It will do the same to the Dragons. Only, in what way? So how do we destroy them? In what way do we depend on these dragons and in what way we never destroy them as long as we are hostages to their supply of petroleum? Should we let the Dragon live alone? That doesn't seem to be human nature, the dragon has too much treasure. We are too proud as men. Pierre -- It was so good to talk to you, and so good of you to call. I thought afterwards that I didn;t do very well at giving you a sense of what the city is like, and it's perhaps of some interest to you and Nina, and perhaps others, since you're so far away. Here's a try at an idiosyncratic rendering: This is Saturday, and the first day there's been anything close to normal traffic on the streets, which are still terribly quiet. All the better to hear sirens constantly, day and night. All of lower Manhattan is sealed off, although they're opening some subway stops down there Monday, so that the stock market can open. Except for one day, it has been heartbreakingly beautiful weather, deep blue clear skies, except that when you look south, there is a gorgeous tall puffy white cloud which is a funeral pyre of steam and dust. It has blown toward Brooklyn until today, and a friend in Brooklyn Heights with a huge terrace sprays it down every few hours because of the dust and paper, which blanketed lower Manhattan and Brooklyn after the collapse, much of it intact, some of it burned around the edges, and some shredded into something like confetti. The little firehouse around the corner, which you walked past on your way from the playground to the hotel last summer, lost seven men. The rest of the crew is down there digging, and a skeleton crew has been sent from the Bronx to keep the station open. I asked them if anyone had brought food so they wouldn't have to cook, and they said if I knew anyone who would like to come and eat with them, they were drowning in food people had brought. The front of the station is a wall of flowers and notes, as is every other firehouse in the city -- 300 firemen are missing, because 10 alarms had been pulled and most of them were in the two towers evacuating people when they collapsed. Most subways have been opened up, but some still can't run at all, or into downtown Manhattan. Broken water mains and water from the fire houses has flooded several subway stations. Several bridges and tunnels are closed so that they can be used by emergency vehicles. There was no train or bus service into the city until Thursday, and most tourist sites or theaters -- Lincoln Center, all the museums, all Broadway shows, etc. -- were closed until Friday, all to avoid providing another target. Most of lower Manhattan is still without power, and a major telephone interchange station was next to the WTC, so most of lower Manhattan also is without phone service, and other phones have been affected. There are panic closings all the time -- bomb threats (90 on Thursday alone), spotting of suspicious cars (all of Staten Island has been sealed off several times), airports opening up and then shutting down because someone with an Arabic name tried to board a plane. There is an aircraft carrier permanently stationed in the harbor so that the airspace can be continually patrolled by helicopter gunships and fighter jets. (The likelihood that an innocent passenger plane will be shot down because of miscommunication is really high.) A hospital ship has been brought in to provide living space and medical treatment for the hundreds of federal rescue personnel who've been shipped in. All TV stations have been broadcasting news without commercials 24 hours a day. As of Friday, 700,000 people had volunteered for anything they're needed for. Of course, there's not nearly enough for that many to do. Whenever they send out a call that something is needed -- say, clean socks for the searchers -- thousands of pairs of socks materialize instantly. They're now appealing for people to stop giving anything but money, because getting rid of the excess food and clothes and everything else is a huge problem. It all comes from this urgent need to do something, anything, both because events have made everyone feel helpless, and because the rescue effort, constantly televised, is so truly heroic. (Only in New York would people think it's perfectly reasonable to remove 220 stories of skyscraper piece by piece to reach a survivor or two, and only New Yorkers are tough enough to actually go and do it, largely BY HAND.) There have been many cases of construction crews walking off the job and showing up at the site with their tools, demanding to help. In most cases, the boss is right behind them with the company's heavy equipment. Ironworkers have come in, unasked, from around the country, and have apparently done an incredible job cutting up the beams so they can be carted off. I gave blood on Wednesday and only got in the door because I'm O neg. Even being that picky, they had to close the doors at noon with 800, and it took until midnight to process that many. (I must say, the Red Cross was fabulous.) When all these waiting donors had to eat, one of them paid for 15 pizzas from a nearby place, which promptly spread the word and boxes and boxes of fruit, sandwiches, soft drinks, noodles, and god knows what else started arriving from neighboring stores. Of course, there's also been some looting and other unpleasantness. But it is so out of character with the predominant tone, which is very quiet and kind. Strangers look at each other and talk to each other -- unheard of for NYC! There's an apprehensive air in the subway or in elevators -- most people feel very vulnerable. But there's also an exquisite sensitivity to the fact that most people have been affected in some way. I was in the drug store the other day, and there were four other customers. One was a neighbor buying stuff to treat his eyes and lungs, because he'd been down shovelling debris from side streets. One was someone who walked out of the Trade Center. Another's brother had gotten out. The fourth, who had obviously been crying, couldn't reach four different friends or neighbors who worked for Merrill Lynch. Love, X Death, Downtown Dear friends, I was supposed to fly today on the 4:30 PM American Airlines flight from LAX to JFK. But tonight I find myself stuck in L.A. with an incredible range of emotions over what has happened on the island where I work and live in New York City. My wife and I spent the first hours of the day -- after being awakened by phone calls from our parents at 6:40am PT -- trying to contact our daughter at school in New York and our friend JoAnn who works near the World Trade Center. I called JoAnn at her office. As someone picked up, the first tower imploded, and the person answering the phone screamed and ran out, leaving me no clue as to whether or not she or JoAnn would live. It was a sick, horrible, frightening day. On December 27, 1985 I found myself caught in the middle of a terrorist incident at the Vienna airport -- which left 30 people dead, both there and at the Rome airport. (The machine-gunning of passengers in each city was timed to occur at the same moment.) I do not feel like discussing that event tonight because it still brings up too much despair and confusion as to how and why I got to live... a fluke, a mistake, a few feet on the tarmac, and I am still here, there but for the grace of... Safe. Secure. I'm an American, living in America. I like my illusions. I walk through a metal detector, I put my carry-ons through an x-ray machine, and I know all will be well. Here's a short list of my experiences lately with airport security: * At the Newark Airport, the plane is late at boarding everyone. The counter can't find my seat. So I am told to just "go ahead and get on" -- without a ticket! * At Detroit Metro Airport, I don't want to put the lunch I just bought at the deli through the x-ray machine so, as I pass through the metal detector, I hand the sack to the guard through the space between the detector and the x-ray machine. I tell him "It's just a sandwich." He believes me and doesn't bother to check. The sack has gone through neither security device. * At LaGuardia in New York, I check a piece of luggage, but decide to catch a later plane. The first plane leaves without me, but with my bag -- no one knowing what is in it. * Back in Detroit, I take my time getting off the commuter plane. By the time I have come down its stairs, the bus that takes the passengers to the terminal has left -- without me. I am alone on the tarmac, free to wander wherever I want. So I do. Eventually, I flag down a pick-up truck and an airplane mechanic gives me a ride the rest of the way to the terminal. * I have brought knives, razors; and once, my traveling companion brought a hammer and chisel. No one stopped us. Of course, I have gotten away with all of this because the airlines consider my safety SO important, they pay rent-a-cops $5.75 an hour to make sure the bad guys don't get on my plane. That is what my life is worth -- less than the cost of an oil change. Too harsh, you say? Well, chew on this: a first-year pilot on American Eagle (the commuter arm of American Airlines) receives around $15,000 a year in annual pay. That's right -- $15,000 for the person who has your life in his hands. Until recently, Continental Express paid a little over $13,000 a year. There was one guy, an American Eagle pilot, who had four kids so he went down to the welfare office and applied for food stamps -- and he was eligible! Someone on welfare is flying my plane? Is this for real? Yes, it is. So spare me the talk about all the precautions the airlines and the FAA is taking. They, like all businesses, are concerned about one thing -- the bottom line and the profit margin. Four teams of 3-5 people were all able to penetrate airport security on the same morning at 3 different airports and pull off this heinous act? My only response is -- that's all? Well, the pundits are in full diarrhea mode, gushing on about the "terrorist threat" and today's scariest dude on planet earth -- Osama bin Laden. Hey, who knows, maybe he did it. But, something just doesn't add up. Am I being asked to believe that this guy who sleeps in a tent in a desert has been training pilots to fly our most modern, sophisticated jumbo jets with such pinpoint accuracy that they are able to hit these three targets without anyone wondering why these planes were so far off path? Or am I being asked to believe that there were four religious/political fanatics who JUST HAPPENED to be skilled airline pilots who JUST HAPPENED to want to kill themselves today? Maybe you can find one jumbo jet pilot willing to die for the cause -- but FOUR? Ok, maybe you can -- I don't know. What I do know is that all day long I have heard everything about this bin Laden guy except this one fact -- WE created the monster known as Osama bin Laden! Where did he go to terrorist school? At the CIA! Don't take my word for it -- I saw a piece on MSNBC last year that laid it all out. When the Soviet Union occupied Afghanistan, the CIA trained him and his buddies in how to commits acts of terrorism against the Soviet forces. It worked! The Soviets turned and ran. Bin Laden was grateful for what we taught him and thought it might be fun to use those same techniques against us. We abhor terrorism -- unless we're the ones doing the terrorizing. We paid and trained and armed a group of terrorists in Nicaragua in the 1980s who killed over 30,000 civilians. That was OUR work. You and me. Thirty thousand murdered civilians and who the hell even remembers! We fund a lot of oppressive regimes that have killed a lot of innocent people, and we never let the human suffering THAT causes to interrupt our day one single bit. We have orphaned so many children, tens of thousands around the world, with our taxpayer-funded terrorism (in Chile, in Vietnam, in Gaza, in Salvador) that I suppose we shouldn't be too surprised when those orphans grow up and are a little whacked in the head from the horror we have helped cause. Yet, our recent domestic terrorism bombings have not been conducted by a guy from the desert but rather by our own citizens: a couple of ex-military guys who hated the federal government. From the first minutes of today's events, I never heard that possibility suggested. Why is that? Maybe it's because the A-rabs are much better foils. A key ingredient in getting Americans whipped into a frenzy against a new enemy is the all-important race card. It's much easier to get us to hate when the object of our hatred doesn't look like us. Congressmen and Senators spent the day calling for more money for the military; one Senator on CNN even said he didn't want to hear any more talk about more money for education or health care -- we should have only one priority: our self-defense. Will we ever get to the point that we realize we will be more secure when the rest of the world isn't living in poverty so we can have nice running shoes? In just 8 months, Bush gets the whole world back to hating us again. He withdraws from the Kyoto agreement, walks us out of the Durban conference on racism, insists on restarting the arms race -- you name it, and Baby Bush has blown it all. The Senators and Congressmen tonight broke out in a spontaneous version of "God Bless America." They're not a bad group of singers! Yes, God, please do bless us. Many families have been devastated tonight. This just is not right. They did not deserve to die. If someone did this to get back at Bush, then they did so by killing thousands of people who DID NOT VOTE for him! Boston, New York, DC, and the planes' destination of California -- these were places that voted AGAINST Bush! Why kill them? Why kill anyone? Such insanity... Let's mourn, let's grieve, and when it's appropriate let's examine our contribution to the unsafe world we live in. It doesn't have to be like this... I just wanted to give you a sense of what it was like to be an American today...maybe you can share these thoughts for me with your dad as well... This morning, when the news was still breaking, and we were watching that second plane hit the world trade center, when we were seeing images of our nation's capital being guarded by fighter jets as the symbol of our nation's defensive power sat in flames, there was such an overwhelming fear of our way of life disappearing before our eyes. I don't even know how to express it, but so many I have talked to felt as if the world was falling to pieces. To drive through downtown Los Angeles this morning, looking up, wondering where the next plane would hit, while everyone cried and talked to each other through car windows, while buildings downtown were being evacuated, while the airport was closed along with ports and freeway off-ramps, was more than surreal. It was sickening and shocking and numbing. To worry about my best friend in Washington D.C. who works at the State Department, to frantically try to reach her on the phone, to worry about our co-workers in New York and wonder of their fate, was horrifying. To discover they were safe was such a relief, followed by the guilt of knowing how many hundreds of thousands were still worried about their loved ones, still without answers. To feel such anger, to hear and to know that this is a horrible act of war, an act of evil committed by some group, to want to exact vicious retribution on those who could do this to all of these innocents, to wonder how to fight a group of faceless cowards was supremely frustrating. To watch Palestinians and others dancing on the street as they gave news interviews expressing hopes for more American deaths was absolutely infuriating. To hold hands with those in my office as we stood in a circle and prayed and cried and said the Lord's prayer, to hug each other as we yelled and cried at the TVs was such an amazing time of knowing what it is to be an American, to feel patriotism coursing through our veins. To watch our Congressmen and women singing "God Bless America" on the steps of our capitol building brought me to tears. We think how would I have been affected? What would I have done? What difference could I have made? I am certainly among this group. Through a "lucky break" of my son's leg, I was still at home when the plane struck. I was the one who answered the phone when my best friend's wife called to alert my wife of the first crash. You see Stu worked for Cantor Fitzgerald in the north tower. I worked in the south tower for Morgan Stanley. Had I been there, I would have called him. Whenever anything happened there, we watched out for each other, like the subway fire which forced people out of the concourse. I called him to get out of the building. Instead, I like so many others just watched events unfold. Then, I started calling vendors to prepare for business continuity because having been through the '93 WTC bombing, I know that business continues to go on. Or maybe it was I wanted not to think about what was happening to my friend and my work friends. Yes, some heroically marched into the buildings. But most heroically went through the events of 9/11 because they were doing their jobs. They get little glory. They get almost no fanfare because we can't document how they conducted themselves. Hi Michael, I think most of us are still reeling from the devastating loss of life and destruction in your country yesterday. My heartfelt sympathies and that of my family go to every American citizen no matter where in the world they are. OK- 8:45 this morning I am in my own world crossing w26th street here in Manhattan, worried about bills, boyfriends etc.. I look up and see a big 747, as far as I was concerned, flying really really low. I think WOW he's flying really, really low. Now on 8th ave and 26th street we have a view of the towers, but I don't look up, I am a new yorker and I need a cab. Couldn't get one so I take the subway. I get up the stairs at 8th and 14th street and walk down Greenwich ave. As I get to 7th ave people are standing around looking south. I look up Tower One, the north tower, is FLAMING, but only abot 20 floors. I thought the fire started in the middle of the night and they couldn't get in under control but everyone was alright. I open my store and go back to the corner and by that time Tower 2 was on fire. I thought it caught fire from the other one. I go back to my store in a PANIC. Bear in mind, I am at the corner by St Vincent Hospital, where later the victums were taken. People are taken pictures and we had NO IDEA WHAT WAS GOING ON!!!!!! I go back to my store turned on the radio and they report a commercial flight has crashed into tower 1. My family is calling, my old boyfriend is calling, people start running.... tower 2 collaspes. The Fix will return to its former state at a later date. -- mm MARK'S NOTES & ERRATA *********************************************** **Grab Hands, Hold On** Of course the most instinctive reaction is to reach out to loved ones, just to hear those voices and get those precious reassurances that everyone is all right, even though they might live just across the street or across town or in a western state nowhere near downtown Manhattan. And even though you know thousands of others aren't all right, that the suffering elsewhere is unfathomable and much closer to your world that you want to realize, still you're compelled to draw your personal circle close and reach out to family and friends, lovers and neighbors and even pets, sort of hunker down and get a little quiet and breathe, try to absorb, feel the ground beneath your feet. Because otherwise you can too easily become overwhelmed, too easily get swept up in the epic tragedy of the World Trade Center attacks and succumb to the massive reeling pain of it all. Where you become suddenly, terribly aware of our ability to build massive technological wonders, glorious architectural achievements and advanced aircraft and enormous, incredibly complex infrastructures to further the progression of our species, only to be reminded in the most horrible way possible how those very same advancements can be the tools and modes of our devastation, can be, in a very literal way, used against us. And like many others across the country, I had a small group of New York friends reporting in all day Tuesday, emailing their status and telling me they we OK, more or less, that they had accounted for their families and friends, that their apartments and neighborhoods were covered in soot and debris and tragedy, that they were in shock but fine, mostly, considering. And I also had messages from friends locally, everyone just checking in on everyone else, putting feelers out seeking gentle proof that those most important human connections were still intact, the frail and essential emotional links that have nothing to do with money or work or cars or portfolios or political affiliations or who has the coolest job or haircut or SUV. And they respond and you share a moment and you are reassured, the circle keeping you warm. But then there comes that point after hours and hours of coverage, after countless images and replays of jetliners smashing into towers and people running in horror down dust-blasted streets, of buildings collapsing and rescue efforts thwarted, of bodies and fires and impenetrable horror, the human mind automatically hits a barrier of tolerance, a tragedy threshold whereby no more can be taken in for awhile, no further devastation can be digested, you just go a little numb and you have to look away, for a short while. There is a small amount of guilt attached to this feeling. But it is unavoidable, and it is largely necessary and important and ultimately healthy. The mind knows its limits. You have no choice. The alternative is, well, something akin to breakdown. And no one needs that. And hopefully you do what you can when you're geographically distant from -- but emotionally bound to -- such horror, maybe give blood or donate money or voice your opinion where it counts, reassure those who need it most. But after all that something else happens, some essential shift in the heart and the mind, you hit that threshold and turn away for a little while to take a deep breath and for a brief period life suddenly becomes weirdly lucid and simple and clear, and you find yourself seeking out something different. For myself and many people I've talked to, what comes next is this need, this almost automatic instinct to seek out the small and the beautiful and the safe, to put on classical music or paint a picture, something clean and pure, to delve into those things which seem to be relatively free of death and destruction and human meddling, things that don't have any outward potential for pain and devastation and which remind you how the world is still capable of creating beauty and joy and solace. Or maybe it's a personal craving, something intimate, like the need to snuggle up in bed with a loved one and turn off the TV and just forget for a few moments, just be, as you quietly notice how everything but the essential human connections is instantly drained of all relevance and weight, it just falls away, rent and work hassles and stress and your in-laws coming to visit, all light and easy, and you're glad for what you have and where you are and that you can grieve and feel and care. Or maybe it's as simple as stepping outside into the daylight to look around and take it all in, really look at the trees and the houses and the people and reassure yourself it's all still there and still functional and the world is still spinning, more or less, though sadly hobbled, somehow that much more ethereal and strange, that much more fragile than before. From what we're hearing on the news, it sounds like things are pretty disrupted. Even here, things are weird. I'm hardly getting anything done, as I'm finding it is difficult to concentrate. I think the same must be true for others, as it seems like everything has slowed to a crawl. For instance, I'm getting almost no e-mail, and usually I get tons. I think many people are just shell-shocked. This is affecting everyone in one way or another. If nothing else, everyone knows someone who has been directly affected by the air transportation shut-down. It's especially weird for Chris, with the airports and air space all shut down. He's in a holding pattern to see if the FAA will lift any flight restrictions today (doesn't look like they will). As you can imagine, his boss (Wright's owner) is in quite a quandary with tons of hunters out in the field who were supposed to be picked up yesterday and today, and other hunters in town who were supposed to go out as well. Things are getting quite backed up. I'm a little concerned about how long people can get stranded in the field before getting picked up. I'm sure many of them are wondering why in the world their charter flights aren't coming to get them, especially when the weather is so beautiful right now. I wonder if they have noticed the complete absence of contrails in the sky? The ramifications of yesterday's events are indeed far-reaching in so many ways that people can't even conceive of. What a sad, sad time. I had an awful realization this afternoon when I heard that they think the White House may have originally been on the terrorists' target list. As a result of the events of the last few weeks, I've been thinking about friends. And how bad I have been about keeping in contact with people. So I'm just saying hello, and hoping that we can catch up. So... how are you? What are things like in your part of the world? I've been hearing that the British press are probably doing a better job of covering what's really going on than most of the outlets in the States. Being in Seattle is really odd. In a lot of ways, we feel quite distant from anything on the east coast. But now, with more bad news every hour, I am feeling more than ever how closely connected everyone is.
