There were more people on the Metro this morning, but not quite as many as usual. As I rode the escalator up at my stop at this end, I was struck by the lack of human noise. There were cars and the sounds of people walking, but very few were talking. Usually street vendors, kids selling papers and people handing out samples are standing around the top of the escalators calling out, hawking their goods. Today the kids and the sample people were not there. The street vendors were, but they were not even talking, much less shouting. The only noticeable, non-practical human noise that stood out was a homeless woman standing in a doorway singing a hymn. (Really. I'm not making this up for effect. But it does feel like I'm writing a scene for a movie) National Guardsmen were still at the intersection, but they were not directing traffic. Their Humvee was parked on the grass in a corner of the park across the street from my office. They were at such an angle that should action be required, they could have driven into the street quickly. But when I walked by no one was in the drivers seat and the guy in the passenger's seat was reading the Post and drinking coffee. The guy must be terribly bored just hanging around on a streetcorner all day (or maybe not depending on what his regular job is) and I'm taking his relaxed posture as a sign that nothing is expected to happen. But there is a part of me that wanted him to be out of the car, walking around (or at least sitting in the car, looking around) being alert and watchful. It just occurred to me -- with all of the construction and restoration that is going on in downtown DC, I sure hope that someone is watching the coming and going of the trucks and equipment. . . Speaking of trucks, yesterday when I was out for lunch I saw a small convoy of National Guard humvees and trucks (with tires that would make a monster truck fan drool) going through the streets of DC escorted by DC police cars, their sirens going. As much as I hate to echo the cliche that it was like a movie, it really did seem like something out of "The Siege". (For those of you who don't know, The Siege is a movie that came out a few years ago about the aftermath of terrorist attacks in New York.) Hi all - I'm OK in case you are wondering -- Manhattan is closed off as far as I can tell. I may have to stay over in Manhattan tonight. My coworkers and I could see the smoke from the Twin Towers after they were attacked - we could see it all from our office windows. We are on the 22nd floor. We are about fifty blocks away. We can't leave the city. There are armed guards at 34th street not letting anyone go further downtown. One of the towers collapsed!!! I used to work in the building right next to the towers a few months ago. This is all very scary. The subways must be closed as well. As you must know by now, the Pentagon and Capital Hill have also been attacked. It is amazing to be living through this IN MANHATTAN AT THE SAME TIME. I was here in NY when they bombed the Towers back in '93 I think it was. Anyway, this is too surreal. Feels like a movie. The fact that one of the towers collapsed is really freaking me out. From: Rich Kennedy Date: Thu, 13 Sep 2001, 15:50:24 ...A long, long way from NY and Washington, we watched events unfold here in Mongolia on CNN and other international news broadcasts. The first plane crash, which got someone's attention, was followed by calls through the small community of Americans here with the question "Are you watching TV?" I turned the TV on in time for footage of the second crash, then sat, entranced, as the Pentagon was struck and the Twin Towers crashed. The phone calls began at about 2 am and basically didn't stop. At work, while NY city entered its first dust-covered, quiet night and the friends and familities of our colleagues entered their vigil in the dark, we got around to mission one. We set about checking the security arrangements of the Embassy compound, the security around our housing where our families are, the security of the school, security for the 30 Army guys deployed here for an exercise and ensconced in a local hotel, security for the 90 American Peace Corps volunteers spread across the country, most by themselves in small communities with little access to international news and no other Americans. We read the mail and message traffic and responded accordingly to the taskings from all angles. In the back of our minds the anger seethed, but was repressed by the business at hand. Somehow the distance, and the importance of taking care of each other, pushed the sense of grief back far enough that we could go about our work. I returned home, exhausted, and watched more news, concerned that a new day would bring new horrible events. There were, but continuations of the first day's acts and not a new round of barbarism. This relief was dulled however, by the lack of news, especially from the Pentagon, where we could identify the office windows of fellow brothers- and sisters-in-arms. At night, exhausted, I couldn't sleep. There was a cloudy, nagging sensation that wouldn't let my mind rest. In my bed my mind kept turning over the scenes: the plane crash at the South Tower; the Pentagon burning; an airliner spread across the Pennsylvania countryside. Then other scenes blended in: the LaBelle disco in Berlin; Khobar Towers; the Embassies in Dar es Salam and Tanzania; and the USS Cole. I realized then what was keeping me awake. It was a sense of insecurity. Even with the Mongolian SWAT team patrolling our housing area, I flinched at every sound from outside, suspect of a terrorist crawling over the fence. I felt beaten -- as if they had succeeded in instilling that terror right into me, and I was helpless, doomed to be looking over my shoulder and flinching far too often. The next morning at the Embassy, after a fitful night of sleep, I was called upon for a particularly diplomatic duty. One that I had not been involved in yet in my three and a half years working in Embassies. I was to take my turn receiving guests offering their condolences and signing the "condolence book." I thought it odd at first. We had other things to do. We had to track down those responsible. We had to check our security. We had to answer the mail from various headquarters acknowledging Force Protection measures, and so on, and so on. I was on duty for the arrival of the military delegation: the Deputy Minister of Defense, three of the four most senior generals on active duty, and a handful of colonels with whom we have frequent contact. It was the obligatory offers of condolence -- sincere, but to me at the time, somehow stunted. Not false, but I thought I sensed, more out of "diplomatic" duty. Afterwards, the President, Prime Minister and cabinet showed up -- shortly after the press entourage -- for the ten minute signing and hand-shaking ceremony. Kind words, a few photos, then gone. Afterwards, the Russian Ambassador. By this time, I was the senior American Embassy person waiting to receive. The others had gone off to discuss our security. The Ambassador, almost with a fervor, spoke of his country's sympathy. He advised me that President Putin had declared a day of national mourning. Russian flags were being flown at half-staff to honor the victims of this tragic event. Then, with a palpable sense of outrage and anger, he agreed that, although we have some differences, the Russian and American people must work together to combat global terrorism, for the sake of all free people. It was another guest, however, who made me glad I was called upon to receive condolences. A retired Mongolian, perhaps 75 years old, with a Communist-era medal pinned to his chest, had arrived. He had already signed the book and was waiting to speak to an American, and I happened to be there. I listened quietly as he explained why he stopped by. He watched, he said, with horror, as the news of the events was broadcast on Mongolian TV. Stunned, he and his family watched for as long as the news was broadcast. He watched President Bush's address to the nation (broadcast via CNN over a local Mongolia-US TV channel and dubbed into Mongolian). He watched as our newly-elected President spoke with passion and grief about the human suffering and loss of lie. He watched as our newly-elected President spoke with passion and conviction about the coming retribution for those who were involved. With tears in his eyes, he informed me that the Mongolians look to America as a bigger, younger brother. He stated how such an attack on America seemed like an attack on Mongolia. He said that he was sure that America would lead the civilized world in ridding the earth of this scourge of terrorism. Then he stated that if in America, he himself would mount his horse and ride to fight the terrorists beside the American soldiers. With that, he quietly put on his hat and left. At that point, tears welling up in my own eyes, I realized that I was not beaten. Yes, there are people in the world who hate Americans. There are fanatics in the world who will sacrifice their own life to take the lives of Americans solely for symbolic, political and fanatical reasons. But there are more people who think differently. There are others, who have lived with terrorism for years, who know what we are going through. There are others, who live in democracies based on law and logic and not on fanaticism. There are those, who wished they lived so. And there are 75-year-old men, who have spent all but the last 10 years in a communish state, who would rally forth at America's call. I rethought my meetings of earlier. The generals and colonels were sincere, but somber, knowing that, eventually, the US military would be called upon to retaliate. The politicians, too, were sincere and somber, with an understanding that if such events can happen in America, they can happen in smaller states, less prepared to defend against them. The Mongolian workers at the Embassy haven't laughed in two days. They feel the sorrow, shock and anger of the Americans. I'm glad I was called upon for this strange duty. My anger has been replaced. I know that we, the American people, have friends that, if called upon, will help us when the time comes. I know that America still serves as the shining beacon of democracy, despite the efforts of fanatics to tarnish that image. I now also know, that I needn't be afraid. I must be aware. I must be vigilent. But I needn't be afraid. I am an American, who chooses to serve abroad. I have chosen to do a job that helps me help others towards democracy and the American way. If I serve in places where I might be a target, I must serve in a manner representing the American people -- with courage, out front and not skulking behind walls and bulletproof glass. I also know that I must be prepared for whatever role I might play in any response to these events. All Americans will have to be ready for that. We need to proceed and respond, not out of anger or grief, but with a sense of justice. We must all have the conviction to continue this process, no matter how long it takes. We must all have the courage to "get on our horse and ride." There is more at stake in this battle than simple American vengeance. I have many friends that live and work in the City and all but one are ok. A friend of mine was one of the first NYC firemen to the WTC before the second building was hit. He is still among the missing. I think all of us out here are still in shock. Right now our attention is not only on the rescue effort, but to help support anyone we know who lost family members. Almost everyone around here is affected in some way. There is an overwhelming need to help. The Red Cross has told us that they now have an ample blood supply for now, and the rescue workers are overloaded with food and drink. We have also been sending socks, underwear, boots, hard hats, gloves, soap and toothpaste because many rescuers are from out of town and need the basic toiletry items. There has been a tremendous outpouring of support from all over the country as well as from other countries, and it really does help us. Right now we want to just do our jobs and be semi-normal again. All of our spirits are high, and we are trying to have some kind of fun because being down all the time is not good for the soul. For instance, I went to my friends house on Friday night and got totally bombed on mudslides!! It was so good to be silly and have a comic release! Let me know when you want to come out. Sent: Wednesday, September 12, 2001 11:46 AM I'm tucked away in the relative safety of my boyfriend's Queens apartment, still trying to comprehend what happened yesterday while at the same time vainly trying to erase the actual occurence from my memory. I close my eyes, and each time I see the second tower explode in flames from my office window. But it is the sounds that haunt me, the crash and burn of airplanes smashing into buildings that just yesterday seemed solid and true. The sickening groans of buildings crashing into the ground, and the screams of people trying to get the hell out of the way. I can't get rid of the sounds of my head. I'm so paranoid now, a mere shell of what I was yesterday. I feel as if there is a guillotine blade of future terrorist acts hanging over my head. I paused the first time I washed my hands in tap water. Two minutes later I was in the local deli purchasing two jugs of bottled spring water, an amount hopelessly inadequate if a true disaster (as if yesterday wasn't) should happen to come, but it makes me feel better, as if I DID something. Chris, my boyfriend, called me on the phone just as soon as the first plane hit. He begged me to leave the building (I am 8-10 blocks away from the WTC), but I sat at my office window, stunned into stupor by the sight before me. I won't tell you what I saw. You've probably read eyewitness accounts from people much closer to the scene. I went into the training center, which is at another part of the building, and more importantly, doesn't have any windows. I went there to close the center down, but I called my dad to talk to somebody. And that is when the first building collapsed. Imagine this, the building starts to vibrate. You've just seen two buildings explode in front of your very eyes. It sounds like a million souls are screaming all at once. And then the phone line gets cut off. I thought I was going to die. My father thought I did, because the last words he heard from me were "Oh My God!" and the line went dead. And then he turned to the television and all he saw was smoke covering all of lower Manhattan. But I didn't die. The world didn't end, at least for me. But when I exited the center, people were crying. I hugged a co-worker and told her "We're tough New York broads, and nobody can mess with us" even though I didn't believe it myself. And then I went back into the central office and called my dad again. And I could tell he had been crying and sick with grief. I reassured him and then got the hell out of there. I was walking with my co-workers in a northward direction. Anywhere North. And on the corner of West Broadway and Franklin, the second building collapsed. And people screamed. And my co-workers turned around stunned and stopped in their tracks. Like Lot's wife watching Gomorrah burn down. "The scenery's interesting, but let's get the hell out of here!" I yelled at them. I suppose it was my idea of a joke. But I took my umbrella and opened it up and held it up in the air like a tour guide until we got to Houston street. Each step northward was affirmation that I was alive, but I was so afraid. "Something's going to happen at 11 o'clock" It was 10:30. Was it almost two hours ago that I walked into my office and heard the first plane crash? I live in a high rise apartment overlooking the Hudson River. I'm on the 19th floor. I felt like I couldn't go home. How could I when Times Square, the Empire State Building, and the UN blocked any possible "safe" routes? So I hightailed it to Queens. A co-worker and I split from the main group and walked over the Williamsburgh Bridge. A mass exodus over the river. And I kept on thinking, is this bridge safe? Have they rigged this one too? But Suzanne and I made it over to land. It was an odd sight. Maids from the Mariott hotel still in their uniforms. People covered in ash. But we made it to the Brooklyn side. It was a two hour walk to get there. God bless the MTA. This man, with a manner that actually put a smile on my face, herded us into groups and plopped us on a bus. At that moment, all I wanted to do was see Chris, and I was going to do that hell or highwater. Please God, I prayed, please let me see him at least once. We took the bus all the way up to Queens. Suze and I were silent the whole way. We got into her car and she gave me a ride to Chris's apartment. She pointed out apartments along the way, but I wasn't really interested. And then I got to Chris's place. And I had to wait for him. And that was hell. I had to wait three hours for him to get home. I tried to eat but my hands were shaking as they tried to slice the pizza up. But the most beautiful sight I saw that day was when I finally saw Chris running outside the window of the coffee shop where I was waiting for him. He ran into the coffee shop and in the middle of that place, with all those people watching, I collapsed into his arms and sobbed. Was supposed to be on a LA flight that crashed into the WTC. Thanks god not at work and decided not to fly to LA but rather to NY to see his family for an extra day (travels a lot). Thank you so much. Arianna LAND OF THE FREE? Since Sept. 11, we've been told again and again that our failure to act in a certain way would be the moral equivalent of allowing the terrorists to win. As in: "If we don't get back to work, they win"; or "If we don't go ahead and play football this weekend, they win"; or "If this changes the way we think about Arab-Americans, they win." And, in a way, it's true -- few us of are going to be fighting the battle on the ground in Afghanistan, but there are ways in which we can all do our part. Ways that include resolutely defending values that define our country. But just as this new military battleground is going to be complicated and risky, so, too, is the one at home. And in the last few days, there is one front where it appears that our enemies might be winning: the First Amendment. To the extent that we give up our fundamental freedoms of expression and dissent, then, yes, "they" have clearly won. One of those battles is going on right now. It involves Bill Maher, who has been excoriated for what he said on "Politically Incorrect" last week. But excoriation -- a valuable form of free speech -- is not a problem. Censorship is. Aren't "they" winning when three ABC affiliates, including the Washington, D.C., station, cancel the show? Aren't "they" winning when networks cave in to rabble-rousing, self-promoting radio shock jocks like Dan Patrick from Houston who started this tempest in a teapot, and who midweek called the show to suggest himself as a guest? And aren't "they" winning when major sponsors like Federal Express and Sears put a higher price on their corporate image than on the essential democratic ingredient of free speech by pulling their ads? These companies have no problems defending capitalism, but they shrink from defending the values that make it possible. When the country just learned with such penetrating anguish what real terror is, how can the corporate logo polishers fear Bill Maher? Particularly when the point he was making was such an important one. So what, exactly, was his point? In response to guest Dinesh D'Souza's assertion that people who are willing to die in service to their cause, whatever else they may be, are not "cowards," Maher said: "We have been the cowards lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away. That's cowardly." I was sitting next to Bill when he said this. And not only did I not object, I wholeheartedly agreed. In fact, in the past, I've made much the same criticism of a foreign policy that obliges our military to fight at great remove from the theater of battle. It was a mistake when we bombed a pharmaceutical factory in the Sudan, and it was a mistake when we killed the very Albanian refugees we were trying to protect with our indiscriminate carpet-bombing of Kosovo. President Bush, himself, has been making much the same point that Bill Maher did: "It will not look like the air war above Kosovo two years ago, where no ground troops were used and not a single American was lost in combat." Presumably, if Maher had made those same comments on Sept. 10, nobody would have batted an eyelid. But by uttering the same opinion seven days later, he put the very existence of his show at risk. Have we all gone mad? What becomes of a country when opinions considered perfectly legitimate -- and indeed uttered by hundreds of academics, journalists and members of Congress -- suddenly become a crime worthy of the media death penalty? If the attacks on innocent American lives end up making us more like our attackers, don't they most spectacularly win? And don't the corporate sponsors, the affiliates and ABC itself see the inconsistency in the fact that, as a way of showing solidarity against the Taliban, they are using the Taliban's trademark weapon -- the stifling of dissent? Isn't freedom what we're fighting for? And isn't lack of freedom -- including freedom of the press -- the hallmark of our enemies? "Cowardly" was the injurious word uttered by Maher. Well, let me use it now where it really belongs -- to describe ABC if it decides to cancel a show that is, after all, called "Politically Incorrect." The show in question was the first since the attack. At curtain time, the studio was electric with anxiety. "Politically Incorrect," though it deals with serious subjects, is, after all, a satirical program. So we all held our breath as Bill stepped onto the tightrope. Maher's tone-setting opening comments, which took the place of his usual monologue, were nothing short of brilliant and -- in light of the media firestorm that followed -- remarkably prescient. "I do not relinquish," he said, "nor should any of you, the right to criticize, even as we support, our government. This is still a democracy, and they're still politicians ... Political correctness itself is something we can no longer afford. Feelings are gonna get hurt so that actual people won't, and that will be a good thing." At the end of the show, the audience rose in a standing ovation -- something I had never seen before. As well as being the host of the show, Bill is my friend. And, as his friend, I was really proud of him. Proud of how perfect a note he had struck between rallying around the flag, showing grief and expressing dissent. How he had shown that they are not mutually contradictory. And everything that has happened since has only made me prouder of him -- and more disgusted at the politically correct cowards who are trying to stifle him. I know that it must not seem real when you watch it on TV, that it's happening in a foreign country. But let's just put it this way imagine you worked on West 9th and the Terminal Tower was bombed and you had to get home to Lakewood and the closed off all the roads. Tell me how scared you would be when you can smell the smoke and people cry and you have to walk home. And all the time when you walk home all you think about is let me get home, let me call my loved ones, let my friends be alive. That is what 9/11/01 was like. And the fact of the matter is the city is creeping back to normalcy but the words from your president seems to suggest retaliation and a circular flow of violence and you are in the city with the most landmarks in the U.S. Then you aren't allowed to go into work because they will arrest you if you cross the line. There are people in military helmets walking down the street, there are policemen on every corner. Where you work has turned into a war zone. Then they ask you to comeback to work and noone is on the street to protect you and all you see is thousands of flyers copied of people's missing love ones. There is candle wax all over the streets and you try not to cry because you're going to work. When you get to work you are distracted and not really there you keep thinking what's going on what will happen. How can the World Trade Center towers be gone. It just doesn't make sense. So, yeah, I'm scared but I live in New York. I think it is scariest for us and those in Washington. But I wouldn't feel safe in any of the new economy centers like Atlanta or Seattle. So that's how I feel. As far as you flying it's been a risk and it's still a risk. You couldn't pay me to fly into New York or go to an airport right now. It sounds as if it takes three hours to get on a plane at least. So, when I come home for Christmas I'm taking the Amtrak rather than plane. As for your flight it's probably safe....I mean what's in Cleveland? The Rock Hall? Key Plaza? hardly up there with the UN, Carnegie Hall, Times Square or the Statue of Liberty is it? So it's most likely fine to fly out of Cleveland. A friend of a friend flew out of New York to Denmark and he's fine. But they did lose all his luggage. So to tell you honestly and I know you think I'm joking...I'm planning on leaving New York next year. I don't know where I'm going but just some place quiet for a couple of years to draw and relax. You know a place without bomb scares or bosses killing themselves. Someplace to just live. I'm not saying I won't comeback to New York City but I am planning on leaving next year. This is just alittle too much excitement for me.
