<text>Hello all,

I made it to work this morning, although it was a journey just to get downtown. The local train to South Ferry will be closed for the indefinite future because two stations were crushed in the fall of the WTC. The last stop on the 1 and 9 trains was South Ferry, my stop, so I will be taking another train for the next several months (or years). Even though the Express train was running to Wall Street, the trains were stopped at Canal (almost 2 miles north) and I had to walk to work from there. I had to pass through 2 police and U.S. Army checkpoints to prove that I worked downtown, one at Canal and one at Pine Street, just north of the Stock Exchange. The streets were eerily deserted of private cars, and roadblocks were all over the place, dividing the downtown into sectors that were alternately accessible or off limits. The few cars remaining were still covered with dust; one had its back window blown out and haphazardly taped over. The people were very docile, following directions, including bright blue signs leading the traders down to the Stock Exchange.

Walking down Nassau and passing Fulton and Liberty, I saw the burned out hulk of 5 WTC, a black building to begin with but now lacking any windows, and then the skeleton of 2 WTC, a twisted charred piece of metal rising up 50 feet where the tower once rose. There were such strange views in that direction; where once you'd see the towers rising, there is now an open space, surrounded by the much lower-scale World Financial Center. A few times I felt I should have found a face mask for all the smoke that was lingering -- all the soldiers and police men were wearing them -- but I figured they'd be outside a lot longer than I would.

The Stock Exchange had the biggest U.S. flag I've seen this week, stretched across its portico, with thousands of people milling around in front of it, presumably being checked before going in. I passed around the back of the building on New Street, usually filled this time of day with delivery trucks bringing in the traders' breakfasts (all of which had to pass through a metal detector, which I had always thought an unnecessary precaution, but the importance of which I now can understand). Today the street was empty except for mobile power generators. Walking up to Broadway, I turned south and passed through another checkpoint unquestioned (it was directed toward people arriving from the ferry terminal and the Bowling Green subway station walking north) and found my building as I had left it last Tuesday, but with heightened security at the base.

Now at work and looking out my window, I no longer see the Twin Towers, their bulk having been replaced by plumes of white smoke, as if they have floated away as dust. An Army HumVee sits like a sentinel in the middle of Broadway, guarding the Bronze Bull that stares up the avenue at Bowling Green. The pavement and sidewalks are all covered in a fine white dust -- there's no distinguishing black-top from concrete. U.S. flags of all sizes, which I have always enjoyed fluttering on the many flagpoles I can see outside my window, are all at half staff. Broadway is like a wall -- the work week is starting on the east side, which has electricity, water and telephone (but no internet) service -- the west side of Broadway to the Hudson, all part of the clean-up scene, is deserted. And above all this, a completely cloudless, gorgeous day.</text>

              <text>Shana Tova, Rach!

I am going home to be with my mother for the holiday tonight, which is probably the best thing anyone could do for me. I really
need her right now, as I'm sure you can understand. I hope that you are doing well and that we can talk soon. Judy and I tried
very hard to call you, but relay was down.

I have to get to work now -- first day back since Tues morning, and I am relieved to be able to go back to something close to
normalcy!

Love you,

Em

Hi Em,
In the spirit of today's National Day of Prayer and Remembrance, here are some
passages from the good old Gates of Prayer I found this morning that I felt
were very appropriate. See below and enjoy.
Somehow, the old Song of the Partisans--you know, Zog Nit Keynmol--takes on a
whole new meaning now. Indeed..."Never say that there is only death for you,
because leaden clouds hide skies of blue/The time we've longed for will at
last draw near/And our steps, as drums will sound, WE ARE HERE/ From land all
green with palms to lands all white with snow/We arrive with our pain, our
anguish and our woe/And where our blood sprayed out and came to touch the
land/There our courage and our faith will rise and stand..."
Stay safe and let me know how you're doing, and let me know what else I can do
to help you and Judes.
Love,
Rach
from GOP pp. 80-81
Eternal Source of knowledge, You have endowed us with reason and
understanding. We pray now for the light of Your truth, for insight into Your
ways, and for the strength to banish from our hearts every desire and thought
of evil.
> Forgive our sins, pardon our failings, and help us to remove suffering
and sorrow from our midst.
May those who have lost their way come again to know Your love, and turn to
You in newness of heart; and let those who love goodness and do justly rejoice
in the knowledge of Your favor.
> Bless our land with plenty and our nation with peace. May righteousness
abide with us, and virtue bring us happiness. Blessed is the Holy One,
who hearkens to prayer.
ADONAI our God, Creator of all the world, You have blessed us with noble
powers: teach us to make wise use of them. You have called us to be Your
partners in the work of creation, and we thank You for the power to choose a
life devoted to Your service, dedicated to the well-being of those around us.
May all that we do bring nearer the coming of Your dominion on earth.
> May all peoples find their way to establish peace on earth. Let them
cultivate that good will which alone can bring enduring peace.
Let the nations realize that the triumphs of war turn to ashes, that justice
and right are better than conquest and dominion.
> May they come to see that it is not by might nor by power, but by Your
spirit that life prevails.
from GOP p. 89
The Gevurot litany
Your might, O God, is everlasting;
> Help us to use our strength for good and not for evil.
You are the Source of life and blessing;
> Help us to choose life for ourselves and our children.
You are the Support of the falling;
> Help us to lift up the fallen.
You are the Author of freedom;
> Help us to set free the captive.
You are our Hope in death as in life;
> Help us to keep faith with those who sleep in the dust.
Your might, O God, is everlasting;
> Help us to use our strength for good.
from GOP p. 193
A Litany of Peace (or, the SPORK's creed)
O God, You have called us to peace, for You are Peace itself. May we have the
vision see that each of us, in some measure, can help to realize these aims:
Where there are ignorance and superstition,
> Let there be enlightenment and knowledge.
Where there are prejudice and hatred,
> Let there be acceptance and love.
Where there are fear and suspicion,
> Let there be confidence and trust.
Where there are tyranny and oppression,
> Let there be freedom and justice.
Where there are poverty and disease,
> Let there be prosperity and health.
Where there are strife and discord,
> Let there be harmony and peace.
And, finally, from our NFTY days,

But by spirit alone (--RUACH!)
Shall all people live in peace
The childrem dream,
The children sing,
And though their tears may fall,
We'll hear them call,
And another song will rise

Today Pakistan attempted to catch the West off guard by launching a
preemptive strike. Fortunately the ICBM's (Inter Continental Ballistic Man)
gyro (made in Iraq) was defective and the weapon went up, veered off course
and came down in a rural marketplace. As you can see in this photograph,
the Pakistani built projectile, which supports a five megaturban warhead
(made by a Palestinian weapons manufacturer), embedded itself in the ground
but failed to explode. A bum disposal squad that was dispatched to defuse
the weapon was unable to get to the bottom of why it failed to explode.</text>

Statement of Steven J. Diner, Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences-Newark

We have all been deeply hurt by the events of September 11. Our nation was viciously attacked by people who revile the civil liberties, religious freedom and pluralism that we so cherish as Americans. To the terrorists, the race, nationality, religion and social class of the Americans they killed matters not at all. I want to express my deep appreciation to our faculty, staff and students, who have come together to provide help to each other and to assist the victims of this terrible tragedy. The spirit of unity and common purpose on this campus has been truly inspiring. I want to encourage members of the campus community to continue organizing public forums, drawing upon our facultys expertise, to examine the unfolding events calmly and analytically.

In this difficult time, and in the trying days that lie ahead, we must avoid venting our anger at the members of any religious, national, racial or ethnic group. To do so, as many have said, would play into the hands of those who hate us for our freedom and our diversity. Of all the institutions in our society, universities have a special obligation to reject bigotry. To fulfill our mission, we must treat every member of our community as an individual, and provide a safe space in which individuals can explore ideas and learn from each other. This obligation falls especially on Rutgers-Newark, ranked for five consecutive years as the nations most diverse national university. Every member of our faculty and staff must be sensitive to the diversity of our community. I will take appropriate action against any Arts & Sciences instructor, staff member or student who engages in harassment of individuals on the basis of their religion, nationality, race or ethnicity, or who incites hatred.

We are all proud of our designation as the most diverse national university. It is now time to give that title real meaning. This is a defining moment for Rutgers-Newark. I have every confidence that we will rise to the occasion.

              <text>Chas:

This morning the medical school had a special grand rounds to commemorate the anniversary of 9/11. At this assembly, two international experts lectured about weapons of mass destruction and bioterrorism. After grand rounds, I headed into the operating rooms to do what I've been trained to do, that is to "save lives and stamp out disease" as Dad would say. At the same time I realized how ill equipped and poorly trained I am to care for victims of the disease known as terrorism.

Perhaps the training you are receiving and the work that someday you do will be more effective against terrorism. Understanding cultures, language and communication are more important here than management of airway, breathing and circulation. In the fight against terrorism, human communication has the potential to save more lives than all the surgeons and anesthesiologists in all the operating rooms in the world.

It's time for me to go back to airway, breathing and circulation. You - go read some Greek.

Good questions, XXX I don't know either. I have been both deeply moved by the emotions elicited by other nations (see photo link below) and sadly skeptical of what they mean. Why don't we grieve like this when Kosovars, Rwandans, or Colombians burn? They suffer in incomprehensible ways EVERY DAY. Is it because of money or is it because ultimately an attack on Rwanda really cannot be labeled an "attack on the world" or an "attack on freedom" as this has? The world will be implicated in our response; maybe they just want to be sure that they're on the good guys side. But are we the good guys...?

I question everything as you do these days, Kev. I too hear talk of biological warfare on this city and my flight instinct kicks in. But I know that I'm not going anywhere.

Is that stupid? I don't know. What can we know right now? I don't know.

Conversation is healthy. Fear is normal. Confusion is frustrating but, sadly, with us for a while.

I have been taking a lot of time to reevaluate my work in the context of this crisis and feel that, now more than ever, public health is another notch in that interminable pitch for social justice. I will continue to fight the war for equal access to quality health care, the right to choose when and if to have children, and for sexual freedom. I will continue to question political systems, including our own, that deny these things to the people that they claim to (do?) care about. I heard that TomPaine.com recently called Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson the Taliban of the US. We all have our evils.

I'm tired too, Kev...and scared. Really fucking scared.

Love, XXX

We're now discussing Canada and upstate NY. Probably more doable. :-)

I read the (Michael) Moore piece. I agreed with what he said, but I think he
should've waited a couple of days. His timing was brutal and, I think,
somewhat insensitive.

I don't know what's right and wrong. The US' socio-political engineering in
the Middle East has been largely ineffective. Will it continue? Are we now
going to get the Iranians to help us against the Iraqis? Are we now going
to get the Russians to help us against the Afghanis? Didn't we put the
Iraqis and Afghanis right where they are now intentionally to give us a
strategic military advantage against Iran and Russia, respectively? Ugh!

I don't want any more strikes to happen. I think they will. I'm scared.
In the simplest of terms, as a US citizen, my taxes go towards the military
so that it will PROTECT US. Not only does it seem wholly incapable of
protecting us, but it may take actions that will put us in greater danger.

Do I want Bin Laden's team of terrorists disbanded and imprisoned? Yes.

Do I care if the terrorists are killed in the process? No.

Do I care if innocent Afghanis are killed? Yes, it's no better than killing
innocent Americans.

Unfortunately, it's during times like these that lives have different
values. The Taliban leaders have gone into hiding, leaving the citizens of
Afghanistan to fend for themselves. What does this say for them? For the
value of their people to them? How does it compare with the value of
American citizens?

It seems different to me.

It seems that our government at least cares enough about us that they make
sure that we still matter to the rest of the world. All around the world,
there are vigils for the NY victims. That doesn't happen when Afghanis and
Nicaraguans and Kosovians are blown to bits. Why? Is it just money, or is
it more? Is it that the US stands for freedom, something the rest of the
world is aspiring to? Does the US stand for freedom anywhere but here? I

I'm tired, XXX, tired of all of this. Now everyone's discussing biological
weaponry. If I understand it correctly, I don't want to be within 50 miles
of New York City. But I live here, and you live here, and we all live here,
and it's not as simple as driving off into the sunset to let everyone else
fend for themselves. I don't know what to do, but the meaningless work I do
all day certainly isn't helping anyone.

Here's to hoping things improve. At least the Israelis and Palestinians
have temporarily stopped beating the shit out of each other.

Love,

From: "Pauline Harris" <eleni368@yahoo.com>

To: "Pat Forbes" <paforbes@sprynet.com>

Hi, Pat...

I will write about this. It is still too close, and I
am too nervous and jittery...I jump at all loud
noises, and Drew has not shaved because his hands are
not steady (and, to help him out some, I reminded him
that not shaving is a sign of being in mourning).

We are determined to survive this. Drew sheltered me
from seeing some horrific things, but in the process,
he saw them. I fear for his sense of peace. We are
working out the usual feelings of guilt for surviving,
for wanting to leave, for being alive but not
volunteering or helping in some way.

Here's an example: He told people,"I was selfish, I
just wanted to protect Pauline and me. She was so
selfless, worrying about the people who were not able
to get out. I just wanted to get us out."

I had to remind a friend who is a neighbor (on our
floor, no less) who was feeling guilty that he didn't
go help people out of the building that, had any of us
tried to help at the time, we most likely would have
died, given the falling debris and the staggering
force of the collapsing towers.

I don't know what to say about it yet. I noticed a
beautiful pair of black pumps left on the sidewalk,
hopefully, so the woman who left them could run
faster. I saw one black woman berate another black
woman who was wearing the veil, down the street from
the flames of Tower 2. I saw another woman in the veil
pushing a baby carriage, walking with two other small
children in the East Village where we finally emerged
from the dust, seeking refuge for ourselves, and I
wanted her to seek refuge for herself and her
children. I screamed in my head, Get home, get your
children home before someone takes revenge on you!

There are flattened emergency vehicles, smiling
National Guardsmen and women who hand out water and
cookies to those of us waiting for an escort to our
homes that may or may not happen. There are the armies
of exhausted firefighters from all over the country.
There are tacky t-shirts that proclaim, "I can't
believe I got out!" There are flags, oh, there are so
many beautiful flags.

I don't want to be here at work, but at least I can be
in a quiet place and have access to email and such. My
office building has an awesome view of the smouldering
pit where the World Trade Center used to be. My
colleagues made me sit with my back to the windows of
our cafeteria today, where I usually sit facing them,
looking out over the Hudson at the building where Drew
used to work.

I don't know what else to say right now.

Take care, love, Pauline

a London-based Arab journalist said followers of bin Laden warned three weeks
ago that they would carry out a ``huge and unprecedented attack'' on U.S.
interests.

Abdel-Bari Atwan, editor of the Al-Quds al-Arabi newspaper, said he received
a warning from Islamic fundamentalists close to bin Laden, but did not take
the threat seriously.

``They said it would be a huge and unprecedented attack but they did not
specify,'' Atwan said in a telephone interview in London.

``We usually receive this kind of thing. At the time we did not take the
warnings seriously as they had happened several times in the past and nothing
happened. ``This time it seems his people were accurate and meant every word
they said.''

Dear All,

1.
My colleagues and I in Asia are shocked at the devastation that New York
City has suffered, and the lost of love ones that many parents, brothers,
sisters, children, husbands, wives, and friends have to endure.

2.
We condemn the cowardly action of the terrorists, and call that they are
eventually brought to justice.

3.
We offer our condolences and wants you to know that we grieve with you for
the lost of innocent lives in this evil incident.

4.
May God calm the souls of all who have suffered, and may the USA emerge from
this stronger.

We have all listened and watched throughout the day and last evening to the tragedy of the terrorist attack on our Country. Our prayers and any assistance we can provide are for those who grieve. Here in the New York area the impact has been devastating as we begin to learn who we lost. Fortunately, I am not aware of any [in our company] that were injured in the attack.

Our President said "the government and American economy will be open for business today". So shall [our company].

May God bless us.

What to do if you fall into a conversation with someone about the
terrorist attacks who doesn't believe in retaliation:

  1. Engage in conversation, and ask if military force is appropriate.
  2. When he says "No," ask, "Why not?"
  3. Wait until he says something to the effect of - "Because that would just cause more innocent deaths, which would be awful and we should not cause more violence."
  4. When he's in mid sentence, punch him in the face as hard as you can.
  5. When he gets back up to punch you, point out that it would be a
mistake and contrary to his values to strike you, because that would be
awful and he should not cause more violence.
  6. Wait until he agrees, and has pledged not to commit additional violence.
  7. Punch him in the face again, harder this time. Repeat steps 5 through 7 until he understands that sometimes it is necessary to punch back.

Sue (8:05:02 PM): hey girl
Anna (8:05:02 PM): I tried calling you
Anna (8:05:06 PM): how are you
Anna (8:05:12 PM): where are you
Sue (8:05:37 PM): still in nyc, unfortunately. i'm ok. thanks
Sue (8:06:14 PM): yeah, it's virtually impossible to get through on the phone long distance
Sue (8:06:22 PM): thanks for trying to call though
Anna (8:06:32 PM): I e-mailed you at work, thinking you might be there
Sue (8:06:40 PM): i went there this morning, but they had closed the office
Anna (8:06:50 PM): where were you when it all happened yesterday
Sue (8:07:19 PM): when it happened i was in my apartment
Sue (8:07:42 PM): isaw everything happen from right after the first crash
Sue (8:07:49 PM): it was horrifying
Anna (8:08:04 PM): oh my god you saw the plane hit the 2nd tower??
Sue (8:08:13 PM): yeah
Anna (8:08:18 PM): oh my god
Anna (8:08:23 PM): I'm sorry you had to see that
Anna (8:08:25 PM): how awful
Sue (8:08:25 PM): i didn't know it was a plane at first...
Sue (8:08:39 PM): the shot on cnn was close up
Sue (8:08:53 PM): so i thought it was residual from the first crash
Sue (8:09:09 PM): when i found out it was a second plane i knew it was no accident
Sue (8:09:35 PM): i had to fight hard to keep it together
Sue (8:10:24 PM): there was a horrifying three hour period before noon where our roommate, ingrid, had gone down there to find her blind aunt
Anna (8:10:32 PM): oh my god that's awful
Sue (8:10:32 PM): right before they fell down
Anna (8:10:35 PM): her aunt worked down there?
Sue (8:10:41 PM): yeah
Anna (8:10:51 PM): oh my god
Anna (8:10:53 PM): was she ok?
Sue (8:10:53 PM): she is blind and called ingrid frightened
Sue (8:11:00 PM): asking her to come get her
Sue (8:11:13 PM): she ended up ok, someone assisted her out of the bulding
Sue (8:11:34 PM): my friend paula's cousin is missing though
Sue (8:12:17 PM): and it's real weird here too... people walking around on 23rd and above with hospital masks on because the smoke is so thick
Sue (8:12:33 PM): asbestos smoke, nontheless
Sue (8:12:57 PM): it's real quite too. its eerie.
Anna (8:13:01 PM): yeah I've been watching the news for about 48 hours now
Sue (8:13:21 PM): me too. but i practically lost it tonight so i had to stop watching
Anna (8:13:24 PM): part of me wishes I was there with you guys because I feel so helpless
Sue (8:13:31 PM): no you don't!!
Sue (8:13:36 PM): believe me
Anna (8:13:38 PM): I have no one to mourn with except a bunch of people who have no personal connection to NYC
Anna (8:13:43 PM): no I'm sure it's horrible there
Anna (8:13:53 PM): but I feel completely useless and depressed
Sue (8:14:00 PM): me too
Sue (8:14:13 PM): i tried to donate blood but there was a 7 hour long wait
Anna (8:14:21 PM): I tried to give blood but the blood banks here were full
Sue (8:14:23 PM): i got turned away from 3 different hosptials
Anna (8:14:38 PM): they told us to come back next week to replenish the supply that will be sent to NY
Sue (8:14:57 PM): that's so awesome that the whole country is helping out
Anna (8:15:26 PM): yes we are all really scared out of our wits
Sue (8:15:48 PM): yeah, it was really freaky how it all happened within an hour pretty much
Sue (8:15:57 PM): i kept expecting more to happen
Sue (8:16:04 PM): elsewhere in the country
Sue (8:16:10 PM): still do, sort of
Sue signed off at 8:16:32 PM.
Sue signed on at 8:17:30 PM.
Sue (8:17:56 PM): still trying to hold it together
Sue (8:18:20 PM): its not easy when everywhere i walk its a constant reminder
Sue (8:18:46 PM): not that i could forget anyhow
Anna (8:18:48 PM): I went out to run errands today, just so I could get away from the TV, and I was surprised to find that the entire world hadn't stopped functioning
Anna (8:18:59 PM): but when I think about it, a lot of it has stopped functioning
Sue (8:19:19 PM): yeah, people are trying to function i think
Sue (8:19:26 PM): but its surreal
Anna (8:20:20 PM): I wont' believe it until I go back to NYC and the twin towers are really gone
Sue (8:21:13 PM): yeah.... it's hard to believe. i went on the roof as they went up in smoke, i could see it perfectly from my building
Anna (8:21:35 PM): when I saw it on tv I wanted to convince myself that it was just a movie
Sue (8:21:53 PM): it was weird cause we hadn't realized yet that the first one had collapsed and erin and i were asking each other, how come we can't see it?
Sue (8:22:14 PM): and then there were all these planes flying over our heads and we felt unsafe
Sue (8:22:20 PM): so we went back inside
Sue (8:23:11 PM): only to run into this guy on our floor who ran into his apartment, shut the door and immediately burst into tears
Sue (8:23:29 PM): we found out later that he had been down there
Sue (8:23:40 PM): and had seen people jumping off the towers
Anna (8:23:59 PM): they're not showing that on the news -- the people jumping
Anna (8:24:05 PM): you saw the fighter jets?
Sue (8:24:10 PM): they showed it on cnn
Sue (8:24:22 PM): it looked almost like falling debris
Sue (8:24:43 PM): but you could tell it wasn't if you thought about it
Sue (8:26:13 PM): today the 3rd building at the trade center was smoldering asbestos smoke all day.
Sue (8:26:33 PM): it was really hard to breathe, even way up town around 60th
Sue (8:26:56 PM): people were walking around in hospital/face masks all day
Anna (8:27:02 PM): have you thought about going to your parents'?
Sue (8:27:33 PM): well, i figured that i would have to work so i didn't think going home wold be the best solution
Sue (8:27:39 PM): but now.....
Sue (8:27:52 PM): i dont know.
Anna (8:28:01 PM): I don't think anyone would hold it against you if you went back to Jersey... it's probably best for your health at this point
Sue (8:29:06 PM): i agree. but i'm afraid that i would feel more isolated there and be even more depressed
Sue (8:29:13 PM): which is the last thing i need now
Anna (8:30:50 PM): is the city offering any sort of free counseling?
Anna (8:30:56 PM): or any way for the city to mourn together?
Sue (8:31:14 PM): i'm not sure.... i would think so for victims and their families
Anna (8:32:32 PM): I don't think anyone knows what to do, city officials included.
Sue (8:32:41 PM): i'm not sure. there might be soon. at least i would hope so.
Sue (8:32:54 PM): but you know how new york is...
Sue (8:33:10 PM): and since a lot of people haven't found out good or bad yet
Sue (8:33:16 PM): it might be premature
Anna (8:33:23 PM): right
Sue (8:33:30 PM): though not for those who already know
Sue (8:33:34 PM): i don't know
Sue (8:33:45 PM): everyone is just in shock. plain and simple
Sue (8:34:09 PM): i don't think anyone's figured anything out yet
Anna (8:34:10 PM): the whole country is in shock
Anna (8:34:19 PM): we're all in disbelief that this could happen to our country
Sue (8:34:40 PM): i know
Sue (8:34:53 PM): it's truly unbelievable
Sue (8:35:56 PM): i guess i'm not surprised though, considering how much europe is affected by terrorism
Sue (8:36:04 PM): our time was coming
Sue (8:36:09 PM): as grim as that is
Anna (8:36:45 PM): right
Sue (8:37:23 PM): i heard that americans have been defacing arab americans businesses and property
Sue (8:37:32 PM): that's a real shame
Anna (8:37:57 PM): yeah the Arab Education Council in Chicago had a molotov cocktail thrown at it this morning
Sue (8:38:08 PM): christ
Sue (8:43:56 PM): you going to work tomorrow?
Anna (8:44:08 PM): yes
Anna (8:44:14 PM): and tomorrow morning I start my new yoga class
Anna (8:44:22 PM): I don't want to move on with my life but what else can I do?
Sue (8:45:07 PM): that's how i feel.
Sue (8:45:22 PM): yoga would be so amazing right now!
Anna (8:45:37 PM): I'm looking forward to it, even though it starts at 6AM!
Anna (8:45:59 PM): today I went and bought new plants. it made me feel good to buy living things to put in my home today.
Sue (8:46:35 PM): erin bought some flowers. it's rejuvenating to surround yourself with life. i hear you on that one.
Anna (8:47:06 PM): I like, want to have a baby now.
Sue (8:47:40 PM): i hear that too
Anna (8:47:45 PM): don't worry I'm not going to get knocked up though
Anna (8:47:50 PM): hey is your man stranded in Europe now?
Sue (8:48:05 PM): well, i guess that remains to be seen...
Sue (8:48:16 PM): he's supposed to come back sunday
Anna (8:49:40 PM): at least he's safe
Sue (8:49:48 PM): i know
Anna (8:49:52 PM): I'm reading the e-mail you sent me the other day and I dont' want to depress you...
Anna (8:50:06 PM): but I thought I would point out how ironic it is that you said
Anna (8:50:10 PM): "makes me realize that i'm lucky to live where there are few hurricanes and no tornadoes (i think)."
Sue (8:50:20 PM): oh man
Sue (8:50:25 PM): that's creepy
Anna (8:50:39 PM): you wrote that to me on Monday night!
Sue (8:50:56 PM): that's so fucking weird
Anna (8:51:36 PM): I'll respond to that e-mail later so when you go back to work you'll have something to read that doesn't have anything to do with what happened to you yesterday
Sue (8:51:49 PM): thanks man:-)
Anna (8:52:14 PM): I'm going to go to bed... gotta be doing yoga in 9 hours
Anna (8:52:18 PM): I'm SO glad you're okay
Sue (8:52:37 PM): thanks. i'm glad you are too, sweetie
Anna (8:53:04 PM): goodnight
Sue (8:53:12 PM): night, dude

Subject: reflections - reality sinking in

Here is the note I posted to my Lutheran chat list this morning...

This morning the reality sunk in. I am a pastor in Queens, and my
colleague Bob Fritch and I have been ministering to our parishioners, so
far all of whom have been spared - we have heard their stories of
getting out of the World Trade Center, of seeing the second plane go in
with their own eyes, of people jumping from the towers, of running for
their lives. And yet, still, the whole thing has had an air of unreality
to it. Even in Queens, we have still been watching it on t.v. like the
rest of the country.

But then the wind shifted last night. Today, in my far northeastern
corner of Queens, the smell is pouring in my south facing windows. I
awoke to an unmistakable reality - a smell like a car fire, burning
electrical wires, burning paper, and another element that I do not want
to think about too much. It is absolutely overwhelming to realize that I
am breathing in the smell of two 110 story buildings being smashed,
burnt, and crushed to the ground filled with people.

May the Lord have mercy on us all.

              <text>We're all fine (thank G-d).

I had a Dr's appointment w/Max & heard about it on tv when we first walked in (8:45 am) then soon heard about the 2nd crash into the 2nd tower.

Max's sitter met us at the Dr - at about 9:30 am. I phoned Christian from her cell phone & he was fine. He convinced me not to go into work. (Not that I could have - I soon found out the subways were all shut down & the school closed as of 10:00 am. Columbia university/Teachers College will also be closed tomorrow.)

My Dad was about 10 min outside the city (he works 4 blocks from the trade center) when he saw the smoke. He turned on the radio - then my mom got through to him on the cell - screaming & crying she told him to come home.
He's at home with my mom.

Christian is still at work - but he's out in the boonies of Long Island - so we are not too concerned. It may be difficult for him to get home, though. I guess he could stay at my parents' house.

There are constant sounds of sirens & people are just glued to their tvs & radios. We are all kind of dazed, teary, spacey... It's surreal. We were supposed to have a primary election today - but it's been postponed.

I 've never been to the top of those towers - always figured I'd have a chance....

Our phone has been sporadic - circuits are all busy.

But, like I said - we are all fine.

Amy

<text>Thanks for the check in. I was thinking of you a few
weeks ago when I visited Florida for the first time
since I left in 1995. Only caight the Fox newscast,
didn't recognize anybody. Clematis St has tripled its
size and there's this outragouges shopping plaza where
there used to be shacks. Always been curious to your whereabouts and if
the dot com collpase hasn't hit you
too hard. Anyway...

It was fucking unbelievable. As I got up in the
morning all I heard was sirens-I live in Gramercy Park
which is like 50 blocks from the WTC. That I'm used
to because I live across from a Police Station. I
turned on the TV just when the second plane hit. I
was stunned. I didn't know what to do so I walked
uptown to go to work. Yes, it was horrible, but after
the bombing of the Trade Center in '93 I assumed that
nothing to could destroy them. My path led me to a
spectacular view of the wreckage on 23rd and 5th.
Both towers were up in smoke. A camera crew asked to
bother my headsets which I forgot were on my head.
They couldn't get the mike to work and they wanted to
check audio. That was when the first one collapsed.
People starting screaming. It was truly stunning
because it didn't seem real. "You sure it fell?" It
seemed to just vanish, as if it was standing then
decided to take a seat. People were screaming,
crying. Even though I saw it, the only way I knew it
truly happened was that you could hear the radio
reports from all the cars that stopped. It was truly
a hopeless feeling. People were crying all around me.

I took out a couple hundred dollars, got some people
out of work-these are "industry" people-so they think
there indestrutable. I told them I was heading back
home and that Gramercy Park was a whole lot safer than
Times Square(which is where I work lgging in tapes for
a few cable networks-truly a sucky job). The long
walk home with a few people that followed me was
surreal. The scarriest thing was seeing this guy,
totally covered in dust, just walking down the street
like a zombie. Everyone was scarred. No one's phone
was working. We kept hearing that there was more
planes headed to New York. Everyone time you heard a
plane you prayed for the best. Luckily they were
always military jets.

I fortunately know no one personally who's been
affected and I hope you're in the same boat. We do
have this couple staying with us now who lived down
there, but they're okay, it's mainly that the city is
shut down from below 14th street.

Well, the look of New York City is forever changed.
This is worse than Pearl Harbor-being that was a
military installation and that there was an easily
discernable enemy. What scares me most was those who
were on those hijacked planes and what will stop it
from happening again.

It was hard sleeping. Everytime I woke up I would
hear sirens. The emotion of it all hits me in waves.
Now, I'm seeing if there's anywhere around I can
donate blood but the problem is that they really don't
need it. The injured have slow down to a trickle.
The only thing that's next is to start counting the
dead and hopefully the few remaining survivors.

The streets were very orderly, total gridlock for cars, but orderly enough. Walking across the 14th street bridge was surreal as a nice breeze kicked up on a sunny day, and jet fighters flew low cover overhead and the black clouds of smoke were visible over the Pentagon and fanned out south.

We are back at work today.
