I want to thank everyone for the wonderful calls and prayers yesterday. I was glad to see that none of you were hurt in the horror of yesterday's events. While I find it difficult to deal with the things I saw just 20 blocks away from me with my own eyes I count myself as extraordinarily lucky. I am blessed with the fact that I was not in either building with an event or in a meeting. I am blessed that my friend Gail who works 200 yards away from the towers in the financial center is alive and unhurt. And I thank God, for transferring my special friend Matt out of firehouse in Brooklyn last Saturday (he was promoted in a strange timing twist of fate). His old crew from Brooklyn did not do as well. The group he would have been in charge of yesterday responded within 5 minutes of the first plane impact. 3 of the 4 crew were inside the building when it collapsed. The are presumed dead. The last, Tommy was blown back and suffered a concussion. As I am sure you have heard there are so many more firefighters who heroically rushed into the building are missing and or dead. Please pray for my fire fighting friend, pray for those who called them brothers and mostly pray for the families they left behind. It startles me to think of all the people that I knew in those two buildings. All the business that I have worked with through the years and the people I know that are still unaccounted for. I can only hope died quickly in such an awful event. Strange sights and an eerie silence is in the city. The rink I play hockey on is now a temporary morgue. How can life return to normalcy. The city seems numb and those who have been touched simply walk in a daze. To look at the skyline and no longer see the towers is to try and imagine looking west in Colorado and no longer seeing the mountains. It just doesn't make sense and it certainly doesn't feel real. So once again, I am unharmed but not untouched. I love you all for your thoughts and prayers. Please continue to pray for us all. My office is -- or was -- in 1 World Financial Center, about 11 yards accross the West Side Highway from the South Tower. In fact, every morning between 8:15 and 9am I walk through the Trade Center, cross the connecting bridge, and enter the safe sanctuary that is the ultimate bastion of civilization -- Dow Jones. I was not however in my office yesterday and haven't been in a few months. I am on an extended maternity leave and using the extra time off to finish a novel that will be published by Haper Collins this winter. From: To: Sent: Saturday, September 22, 2001 9:52 AM Subject: New York Trip I have followed with some interest the stories that the Daily News has published concerning some of our local citizens who happened to be in New York during the recent horrific events in that great city. I was there, along with my wife and four other locals, from September 10 to September 16. I have some very strong impressions of my visit and of the events that I witnessed. Interestingly enough, those impressions do not totally line up with some things that others have reported. This does not make my impressions more valid than theirs--just different. Thomas Carlyle, in describing his great masterpiece, The French Revolution, to a friend said it was a series of fire pictures strung on a line. We all have our fire pictures and only time will give us the line of understanding that will clarify these pictures for us. I have some strong impressions that I hope to share with your readership and maybe the simple act of writing will help me to understand. My first and strongest impression revolves around the immediate response of the city and its people to what had happened. The six of us in our party had flown into New York late in the evening of Monday, September 10. We are all experienced in trips to the city and we all have some facility in moving around Manhattan. We checked into our hotel on west 47th Street, and decided to celebrate our arrival by catching the subway south to the area of the island we all love, Greenwich Village. We made our way through some of the Village by walking Houston Street from Varick Avenue to Sullivan Street and having a friendly drink in a local bar on the corner of Houston and Sullivan. The Village was at its Bohemian best: friendly, tolerant, frivolous, comfortable in the knowledge that it was the center of the universe. We left the Village late and decided that Tuesday might be a good day to sleep a bit later than usual. The general plan was that we would get in motion around 9:00 am on Tuesday and probably head south on our wanderings. About nine the next morning we decided to stroll over to the Visitor's Center on Broadway and 47th Street, then we planned to catch a subway to the World Trade Center and see Battery Park, the Stock Exchange on Wall Street, and the South Street Seaport. While we were in the Visitor's Center we heard this weird announcement, garbled as only a public address system can garble, that an airplane had crashed into one of the towers at the World Trade Center. The first thought, of course, was that some stupid jerk had crashed his Piper Cub or some such. The announcements started becoming more and more insistent and we made our way over toward Grand Central Station. By the time we had reached Bryant Park, which occupies the area between Fifth and Sixth Avenues and between 40th and 42nd Streets (immediately west of the New York Public Library), we knew something strange and traumatic had occurred. Bryant Park, which that morning was supposed to be hosting a fashion-model TV show, was instead occupied by many people clustered around radios that had appeared from a myriad of sources. I was overwhelmed with flash backs to my boyhood during World War II, those pre-TV days, when we huddled around the radio to hear Edward R. Murrow and others tell us about the war. One of our number crossed the street to Radio Shack to buy a small, battery-powered, radio. We sat in the park, drank coffee, listened to the unfolding drama, saw the ugly column of smoke and debris push heavenward, and saw New York swing into action. The attitude of the people in the park was one of disbelief and anger. Then a remarkable thing started to happen for New York: the streets began to clear of traffic. What was moving were emergency vehicles of all types, fire trucks, police vehicles, ambulances, emergency rescue equipment, police vehicles pulling horse trailers, everything one could imagine would be of use in the direst of situations. Again, this is one of my strongest impressions: New York was as ready as any city could be in something of this magnitude and it was ready quickly. The sounds of sirens became the constant of our week in Manhattan. The whole world has seen the magnificent work done by the police and fire departments in the city. The men and women who rushed to that scene were able to prove the value of their training as well as their courage. For someone like me, their readiness to move into this inferno was awe inspiring and will stay in my mind for a long time. A concomitant feeling that accompanies this impression is the help that the people of New York lent to the effort. Not only did an army of volunteers appear, but New Yorkers did not take advantage. As we walked the diamond district around 47th Street we saw barred windows with all the jewelry normally displayed gone into store vaults. All this preparatory to looting, but no looting occurred. New Yorkers did not give themselves over to riot as so often occurs in like situations. No cars were burned in the streets, no rioting, no looting, just a stunned city responding to a situation undreamed of. The question that insists itself on my mind as I explore this strong impression is, "Could my city respond as readily as did New York?" If something of a like nature occurred involving Alamogordo and Holloman, would we rally the way New York did on that September morning? We hear often of Mike Riley holding emergency exercises involving local emergency response agencies. This is to be applauded and, I hope, extended. Holloman has, I am sure, stringent measures in place for dealing with emergencies. But the thought is always there: when it comes to catastrophe, how will we respond? Will our plans work? Most haunting of these questions is, How will I, personally, respond?" The one thing that marked the response in New York was the cooperation that developed between all agencies. No time for turf battles here. What bothers me some is the feeling that has been expressed in the past by some of our county officials and some of our citizens that the real enemy we face is the federal government. In a situation like New York, the federal government becomes the lead agency in criminal investigation, in providing financial relief, in providing manpower in the form of the National Guard, and in getting military aircraft in the air to protect the situation. Federal government leadership cannot be questioned if we are to survive the terrorist threat. We need to make our peace with the fact that we are all in this boat together. Sorry I haven't called anybody but I don't really want to talk about anything. The past day things are really startin to process as far as what happened and whats gona happen. Part of me wants to get the hell out of NY for even just a couple days but I think if I was any place other than here all I would want to do is get back. I have been on bucket bergade a couple times. When your there in the mess you don't want to leave but they allow 11hr shifts. Then when you get home you don't want to go back, but you can't sleep and all you do is watch it on TV. Then you feel guilty and thats the only place that you feel you should be. Especially once you've been there and witnessed it. I know you guys see the shit on TV but like say on the news it really doesn't do it justice. People here feel pretty helpless because you feel like at anytime somethin else is gona happen. In one day we had over 90 bomb threats. Grand Central, Penn Station and Macy's were all evacuated around the same time. A big fear people have now is once we do go after these fuckers that chemical warfare could become a reality any day, which is a fucked up feelin, especially when your in the subway. The smell is starting to get pretty unbearable even if your 80 blocks away you can still smell it. Even with your windows shut. Two nights ago a bunch of us got together at Jake's, a bar we hang out at and at around midnight the manhole covers started exploding all the way up Amsterdam Ave. right outside the bar with blue flames shootin out of the street... I guess a gas main blew. Everybody was evacuated. Its like we can't even sit in our fucking bar, chill out and have a drink, and thats the only place your gona get any type of comfort. You go fucking crazy sittin home which is where I have been since yesterday. But its impossible right now to go back to a normal life. There is also a serious back lash towards anybody who resembles a Muslim... My buddy Rich lives in Queens, a block from Little Arabia, and they are on the brink of rioting against these people. Two days ago a cab driver was chased down the street... he hopped back in his cab and blew through a red light to get away and went head on into a service truck. I hate to say it, I know its wrong and I don't agree with it but I can understand the hate people are feeling. Aside from that people are really pullin together just like they are there. In order to volunteer you have to wait in a line that has to be at least a quarter of a mile, and there are volunteer stations all over the place. Whats so amazing to me is all the types and ages of people in these lines who have been down there already or on there way for the first time knowing, or not knowing that what they are about to see and do is gona change them for the rest of there life. As we know shit is gona get a hell of a lot worse, this is nothing compared to whats commin. I'm not tryin to be dramatic but when I hear people sayin we have to stop this vengeful type of thinking it makes me sick. Thats why we are in this mess now. I think people should watch every image on TV as gruesome as it gets and take it all in because when the shit goes down and we go after these fuckers I hope it will make people understand a little better that we had no other choice. I'm home now, and I just wanted to let everyone know I'm OK. Please forward this on to anyone I missed who might be curious regarding my whereabouts. Here's what happened to me today.... I was in my office 4 blocks from the world trade center this morning, when I heard the explosion from the first plane impact. As it so happens I was listening to the radio, but the station I listen to used a transmitter on top of the twin towers, and so was immediately knocked off the air. A few coworkers and I stared out the window at the burning tower, and listened for news. We were watching when the second plane hit, and I saw the explosion. At this point, the building we were in was evacuated, and the general order given the police was to evacuate all of lower Manhattan. It was 9:45 AM. As I walked northward with coworkers, we heard a huge crunching sound. I turned around, and one of the twin towers simply wasn't there. In place of the tower was a large cloud of white dust and debris, covering the entirety of lower Manhattan. The cloud missed us by about 2 blocks. As we walked farther on, the second tower fell. All transportation, subways, trains, bridges, and tunnels in Manhattan and to New Jersey were closed, so I walked 6 miles north to my sister's office. She works at Sloan-Kettering Hospital. Needless to say they were busy. I hung out in my sister's office until they started running ferries to NJ. I walked another 4 miles to the ferry station, and waited in line with about 1,000+ others for two hours. Upon arriving in NJ, a haz-mat team greeted the ferry. All those who had been within 10 blocks of the trade center (including me) were separated from the crowd, and brought to a decontamination area. We were given a plastic bag to place our electronic equipment into, and then made to walk into a series of tents, where a fireman hosed us off with a fire hose. Management did not want to appear biased and felt that our nations flag might give the appearance that "they lean one way or another". Berkeley, California bans U.S. Flags from being displayed on city fire trucks because they didn't want to offend anyone in the community. In an "act of tolerance" the head of the public library at Florida Gulf Coast University ordered all "Proud To Be An American" signs removed so as to not offend international students. I, for one, am quite disturbed by these actions of so-called American citizens, and I am tired of this nation worrying about whether or not we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on September 11, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Americans. However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled in New York and Washington D.C. when the "politically correct" crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others. I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to America. In fact, our country's population is almost entirely comprised of descendants of immigrants; however, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some native Americans, need to understand. First of all, it is not our responsibility to continually try not to offend you in any way. This idea of America being a multi-cultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Americans, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language, and our own lifestyle. This culture, called the "American Way" has been developed over centuries of struggles, trials, and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom. Our forefathers fought, bled, and died at places such as Bunker Hill, Antietam, San Juan, Iwo Jima, Normandy, Korea, and Vietnam. We speak English,--not Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society - learn our language! "In God We Trust" is our national motto. This is not some off-the-wall, Christian, Right Wing, political slogan - it is our national motto. It is engraved in stone in the House of Representatives in our Capitol and it is printed on our currency. We adopted this motto because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation; and this is clearly documented throughout our history. If it is appropriate for our motto to be inscribed in the halls of our highest level of Government, then it is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. God is in our pledge, our National Anthem, nearly every patriotic song, and in our founding documents. We honor His birth, death, and resurrection as holidays, and we turn to Him in prayer in times of crisis. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture and we are proud to have Him. We are proud of our heritage and those who have so honorably defended our freedoms. We celebrate Independence Day, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Flag Day. We have parades, picnics, and barbecues where we proudly wave our flag. As an American, I have the right to wave my flag, sing my national anthem, quote my national motto, and cite my pledge whenever and wherever I choose. If the Stars and Stripes offend you, or you don't like Uncle Sam, then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet. The American culture is our way of life, our heritage, and we are proud of it. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. We are Americans, like it or not, this is our country, our land, and our lifestyle. Our First Amendment gives every citizen the right to express his opinion about our government, culture, or society, and we will allow you every opportunity to do so. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about our flag, our pledge, our national motto, or our way of life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great American freedom--the right to leave. Traffic - both pedestrian and vehicular - was back to normal this morning. Guardsmen are still positioned at some intersections, but they have moved. Instead of being positioned at 13th & K (right outside my office) there was a group at 13 & I and another at 13th & New York - the next two blocks down. Don't know the rationale for that move, but it somehow seems hopeful. And they were actually out of the humvees, looking far more alert than the guys I told you about yesterday. I'm afraid this is all you're getting today. I wrote that paragraph when I got in this morning at 9:15 and have not had a chance to return to it until now - 5:40. Judging by the pace of the research requests coming in to me today, the attorneys at least are recovering well. I will probably send more on Monday - provided the attorneys have settled down.
