My office window faces South from midtown and for hours my co-workers & I have been staring at the plumes of smoke still rising from the catastrophe. Several of us have witnessed plane collisions and building collapses. The mood of the city is frantic and distraught. All bridges & tunnels are closed indefinitely. Traffic from downtown is clogging the streets and many are walking away from the area like urban refugees. The WTC towers were prominent features of the skyline. I got back to my hotel room in Warsaw on Tuesday after work and switched on BBC World. The first pictures I saw were of a plane hitting the south tower of the World Trade Centre. Like a million others in the world, seeing those pictures for the first time I assumed (or maybe I was subconsciously hoping) that they were a preview of some new inferno horror film. When the commentator related the ghastly truth I was full of so many emotions: disbelief, horror, fear for so many victims, hatred for the perpetrators, intense sadness for the American people....you know better than me how I felt but believe me we all share your feelings. The terrorist attack was not just an outrage on the American people, but an attack on all the free democratic people of the world; we stand united in our determination to rid the world of these madmen. It seemed that for the rest of the week, BBC World was entirely devoted to the news from America. I was particular pleased to see that the daily changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace - a ceremony that has taken place every day apparaently since 1660 (before Buckingham Palace was even built) - included the playing of the Star Spangled Banner. The American Ambassador was present, along with several hundred - or many thousand - Americans who happened to be in London, and was clearly moved. Yesterday, there was a service at ST. Paul's Cathedral attended by the Queen. She was clearly affected by the occasion. She joined in the singing of our national anthem - another first to have a foreign anthem played in one of our cathedrals and to have our monarch singing it. I apologize for not checking in on you earlier but was preoccupied with my family, who are all safe, if not exactly okay. My mother, who runs a school on 109th St in Manhattan, has been dealing with her kids' fears and questions. My sister Monique and her daughter Sharese are okay in the Bronx, but shaken. My sister Jenifer, who runs a flight school in S. Florida, will have to deal with fears about the new students who will be coming her way and the need to avoid prejudging any of them. I've been having a terrible time getting onto the internet. I found a cafe closer to where I live but everytime I head over there either the connection is down or there are too many people waiting in line. My family is fine. Pasha and Linda were on their way to vote after dropping to kids off at school and saw the first plane hit the WTC. They hurried back to get the kids when the second plane hit. They got home and stayed there until last Thursday (within the zone but they had electricity and phone service unlike many others.) Last Thursday, Linda and the children walked to 14th and then took the subway to Grand Central. Unfortunately, as they were sitting on the train there was a bomb scare and they were evacuated. They walked to Pasha's office (yes, in mid-town) and were waiting there when the skyscraper next door was evacuated because of a bomb scare. Pasha sent them to Westport in a dial car. Linda and the kids were very upset by the time they got to parents. Daniel is scared of planes and Rachel doesn't want to hear any talk about the situation. I think after five days with my parents they were better. Another family also came and stayed at my parents from the neighborhood. Pasha spoke at a service that the firm held about the issue in particular. They are also very concerned about the community and the school. I think having something to do is helpful. Kamala First a report on the state of things in New York. Daniel and Rachel went back to school in P.S. 41, on 11th street, on Thursday. It is squeezing two schools into one building, and all three fifth grades, for instance, at P.S. 234 were squeezed into one room - 96 students, slightly less than that, because not all students were there, but surprisingly, almost all the students in the school were there. But that many students in one room, even with three teachers, is more than a bit of a problem. At the end of the day Daniel said it was chaos. The second day was better. And Rachel came home with a new friend, an Israeli girl... They don't have desks, so Linda and Pasha were working on getting donations of rug remnants so they would have something other than the floor to sit on. Three rugs, says Daniel. Pasha has already talked Compaq, think it was, into giving them computers. And he has called the planetarium - the head went to Harvard with him - to arrange for a trip there. Ditto the Metropolitican Museum of Art. He talked to me about arranging a trip to the UN, but the UN is under tight security. I can't get in, so...So P.S. 234 does have a good many parents who are determined to make the best of this, with contacts that will help. P.S.234 is being used by the police, etc., but the electricity is back. It needs a good cleaning. It is just beyond the zone where people can go. The Parent Association is pushing to get it turned back into being a school quickly. Linda's park is open in the daytime, but not at night. And there is a worry about asbestos pieces in the sand boc. The school is on the other side of Chambers St., so off limits so far. Pasha walked yesterday from the tip of Manhattan to North Moore Street where they live on Broadway. That is the dividing line, running north south, that divides the lower part of Manhattan into east and west. Chambers St. is the northern boundary, for everything west of Chambers, and Rector St. is the southern boundary. So the stock exchange on the eastern side is open and the Wall St. area around it, in fact the whole eastern section. Below Rector stree, on the western side on NY, is also opn. But everything between Chambers and Rector, on the western side of Broadway, remains closed. And a lot of people live there, including one family we housed in Westport. They are now living in a hotel. We were there last night. My brother Witter was visiting. We could take the subway to Franklin St. It is now the last stop on the subway. All the stops below will be out of commission for years. The tunnels for the subway in the area where the World Trade Center have collapsed. So the local that used to go to South Ferry is out, rather Franklin is the last stop. But now it is routed to go to Brooklyn through a subway tunnel on the east side of lower Manhattan. It will take a long time to rebuild. Even last night the debris was burning, and there was a huge black plume of smoke, which when the wind is blowing in your direction brings an acrid smell. And the traffic is fire dept, police dept., Verizon working 24 hours a day to put in lines for electricity, etc. And the removal of debris will go on for weeks or months. On the other hand, Bubby's, the restaurant on the corner of North Moore, was back in operation and we had dinner there. Food Emporium is back in business. And many other stores, etc., are open again. Pasha has been very involved in organizing the lawyers of NY to give legal help to any of the small businesses who need it. Many of them are certainly going to be unable to pay their staff, make payments on loans, etc. And undoubtedly banks will not demand payments... And both he and Linda have been working on the school. There was a meeting of the principal with the parents Friday morning, followed by a meeting with a counselor whom they said was excellent. I, of course, have been thinking of the legal, multilateral options that the US should use, not the use of military power. But that is a huge topic. Most people don't seem to know that both the UN Security Council and the General Assembly have passed resolutions. Read a lousey column in the NY Post yesterday that was blaming the UN, seed bed of terrorists. And CNN. Ugh. A Keyhole View of the WTC September 17, 2001 Subject: FW: [talkling] A keyhole view Immediately upon seeing an orange ball of flame emerging from the WTC, I called my wife, who commutes from NYC to work in Princeton, and left messages on her two phones saying that I was ok and the kids had left for school, hence were in the Bronx and Harlem, quite far from here. A correction to my first letter. My daughter was not eating supper with me when the third building collapsed. Phone service became erratic (overload, etc.) within minutes of the crash. As things progressed subways and busses stopped. Driving was out of the question. The fact that my 16 year old daughter was at the Bronx High School of Science was a comfort. My 11 year old daughter was safely tucked into a classroom at the Center School on 72nd street, a Harlem district school where half of the children qualify for the free milk program, and in my opinion one of the best schools in the country. My wife in Princeton, was far from trouble. The only one to worry about was me, and never having had any serious injury or aliment, I still possess that teenage feeling of invincibility. I examined the hole in the WTC through binoculars, and then set up the telescope to view the wound more closely. The hole on the north side of the WTC (the plane hit the south sides) looked like it was pulled in, not pushed out. Two college professors and I examined the hole with binoculars and we all thought that the plane had hit from the north side since the siding was pushed in. As Bertrand Russell said, when the experts are agreed, the opposite opinion cannot be held to be certain. The aluminum siding seemed to be melting and falling apart. My 11 year old called me frantically crying. She had left the school for lunch and had wandered by herself from 70th Street to 59th Street, and was horrified by the missing-tooth-look presented by the one remaining World Trade Center tower, the smoke, and the dazed people. She said some woman was with her. I talked to the woman (She might have been a high school student.) and asked her to return my daughter to the school. My daughter did not want to go back, she wanted to walk home (Impossible) or me to go get her. Lying through my teeth, I told her that I would immediately drive up and pick her up from school. She brightened and the woman said Tracy wanted to hurry back to the school. I told the woman to tell the teachers - but not Tracy that my wife's cousin (our emergency contact person, lives about 74th Street) would pick her up. I did not hear from her again until quite a bit later. If I left to get her, I would not know where to go. Not inconceivably - she is extraordinarily determined and persuasive - she might convince someone to bring her home. My phones received calls, but could not make outgoing calls. There was no dialtone. Some of the incoming calls were from machines offering me home delivery of the NY Times to keep me abreast of the news. I was hoping for news of my 11 year old. As the first WTC tower was collapsing, I was in the store buying apples, eggs, etc. to make Tracy's favorite food: a sort of an upside down fried apple omelette, heavily laced with ginger, nutmeg, mace, and cinnamon, that is baked in the oven. My daughters and I recently bought six different cinnamons, and we have been experimenting with the spices. At the normal supper time, I set a place for Tracy and cooked the dinner. I ate a little bit of it by myself, but was ready to surprise her with it as soon as she walked in. My daughters and I are bakers. We make bread, pizza, cakes, pies, turnovers. We have studied The Cake Bible till the pages are worn, and we have produced elaborate icings using sundries from the fantastic store on about 21st and 6th that sells only cake decoration supplies. Our latest project, stymied by the WTC disaster, was to make marzipan bottle caps, cleverly painted with food coloring to look like Snapple and Heinekens tops. At my birthday party, we were going to pass out 'real' bottles to guests and keep the marzipan phonies for ourselves. While the boys twisted the Snapple tops, the girls would simply pop them off with their teeth and chew them up. I would do the same with a Heinekens in the presences of Princeton alumni. Many of my thoughts of my children focus on making shortcakes, teddy bear shaped breads, and the apple omelet. My comfort food is not apples and spice, but a blue cheese (very ripe) omelet, like the one at the Café Luxembourg. A friend of mine who just had his second triple bypass operation told me twenty-five years ago that cholesterol does not stay in your body if you drink two or more bottles of burgundy during the consumption. Bordeaux is almost as good, but white wine has no effect, except for Fois Gras, which is only flushed from your system by a good Sauterne. My doctor disagreed with this, but he drinks concord grape wine from New York in bottles with screw off caps, so he clearly has no idea what he is talking about. I have often read that red wine is good for your heart. Having covered the horror and tragedy in the first letter, let us turn to the surreal. The WTC listing at 3 degrees, I decided to go to the Pizza Box on Bleecker Street and get a chocolate Italian ice, something I often do with kids in the building, but have never done on my own. I do not like ice cream only baked goods. A line was building up in the supermarket, so I postponed the Pizza Box, and headed in. I got apples, milk, eggs, and black beans (I make soups also). The store had a grotesquely shaped ball of Societe blue cheese, and I plopped it into my basket. At the checkout counter, debit cards did not work, but credit cards did slowly. Cash talked. Armed with my emergency twenty that we keep in case we have to go by taxi to the hospital, I was ready. Six people ahead of me. Four lines about the same. People pouring into the store. Maybe twenty people in the isle I could look down. Most people had bottled water. I settled into the wait, preparing to jump to another line, and forgot the 3, by now maybe 4, degree tilt. Screams in Spanish from the loading platform outside, then in English from everywhere, then in some African language as the delivery men passed the information. The store emptied in seconds. Everyone left: cashiers, customers, management, the meat and produce folks, and the delivery crew. I was left totally alone, as near as I could see. Lots of human anguish and grief being expressed outside. What to do? I decided that to walk out with the food was stealing. The only thing I really needed was the blue cheese since I could get everything else at a Deli. I left everything. I walked to the door, easily overtaking an elderly woman galloping along with her walker. I had not noticed her. I think she had hunkered down by the coffee machine to avoid the human stampede. She asked, 'What happened?' and I told my second lie for the day, 'I don't know'. A big dust cloud had replaced the WTC. From my ground perspective, I did not know how the cloud had spread out. I only saw that later, when I watched the second tower collapse. Most people were not hysterical or even loud. Most looked stunned and aghast. One extremely overweight woman was shaking and crying hysterically. Apparently her sister was inside one of the towers. I decided not to get the chocolate ice and picked up the apples, etc. at the Korean Deli. I bought a carrot juice and drank it immediately. I returned home, checked the answering machine, but there were no messages, made a pot of chamomile tea and pulled up the chair to watch the second tower collapse. It was here that I made my most systematic observations of the trapped people. My observations were surreal because I have an astronomical telescope and everything is upside down. The people and buildings were upside down. The flames and smoke went down. When widows and aluminum siding melted and fell, the blobs and chunks fell up. When people jumped, they left my field of view by moving upwards in their upside down positions. At all times my feeling was that I was watching a movie running backwards, a cassette rewinding. I wanted to reach for the fast-forward to put the people back on the floor. If I kept both eyes open, one with the inverted 40 power view and the other normal, it sometimes looked like the debris and people were moving upside down up into the sky. Oddly, the fire in this situation always looked like it was going up. I felt that I was not actually here. After I ate my daughter's supper alone by myself, phone calls started to come in and my internet connection restarted. Tracy was secure at a cousin's house and was being hammered by endless loops of violent images on TV. I wrote the first letter in the half hour before I went to bed and sent it off. I did not edit the letter since I have two troubles reading it. One is that the letter is like a concentrated bullion cube of the horror of the human dimension and it turns back into the bubbling reality of the moment if I look at the sentences even to try to correct the spelling. Second, I had a severe fall about two years ago and damaged both of my retinae. After a year of rehabilitation, etc., a blood vessel broke in one eye. As the peepers have healed, I see excellently at long distances, but do not see well up close without very bright lights. Yesterday morning I stepped on Tracy's Magician's Set alongside of her bed because I did not see it. The next day my wife came back from Princeton. Trains were running normally outside of the scene of the tragedy. Tess, the 16 year old, called and I told her to pick up Tracy from the cousin's house on her way home. When Claudia, my wife, arrived, she soon left to go to the cousin's house to get the two girls. I cannot place calls out, but can get them. The daughters called and I told them to wait for their mother. The wind shifted. All smoke blew East or West. Now it started North, and that is where I am. I recognized the smell immediately and packed the car with Gatorade, crackers, and so on. When the family arrived, we packed for five minutes and headed up 6th Avenue in the Volvo Wagon. I expected a 10 hour traffic jam to get over the GW bridge. The smell abated by 23rd street and we opened the car windows. The radio had talked of enormous traffic jams, but we saw no traffic going north. We were over the GW bridge in record time and when we got to Passaic we called people in NY to tell them traffic was a breeze. Going out that is. The West Side Highway was bumper to bumper moving 5 miles per hour North to South. There were convoys of enormous heavy earth moving equipment, much bigger than one normally sees. Gigantic Tri Axel dumps, much bigger than I have seen on normal roads. This was the stuff they probably use when they are building the roads that normal trucks move on. Traffic was packed Southbound from 59th to the bridge. On the other side of the GW Bridge, there was no traffic going out. There was a 10-mile traffic jam going into the city. When we reached our farm (Near the Delaware Water Gap), the New Jersey surreal ecstasy was there in full bloom. The kids wanted pizza, but Claudia and I bought a salmon and barbecued it. Salmon, spuds, and salad. Friends told us via email that breathing was hard in some areas of NYC and that they stayed indoors. The sixteen year old wanted to take a bus back to the city and then travel to West Point to meet a boyfriend that is a student there. She has absolutely no concept of the enormity of the thing and sees it as a lower Manhattan technical problem. She is totally unconcerned with the word's financial markets. She probably does understand the level of human tragedy, but has not yet reacted. Tracy, without being asked or invited, moved her mattress into our bedroom. She does not fully grasp the situation, but she wanted to be with us. When I got up to make a tea in the morning, she took my place in bed. The next day(s) it had some heavy rain. Maybe I will write about the children in NJ later. To me the human dimension, especially the effect on children, is the crucial one. We came back to NYC on Saturday at about 4:30. We were over the GW Bridge and made it to 59th street very quickly. At 59th street, the highway descends from its elevated ramp onto ground level. From 23 or so to 59th is the area of docks and piers for Bahama cruise ships and ocean liners to wherever. The traffic was dense here because the boat piers are being used as a temporary morgue. They bring bodies and body pieces here to sort them out and identify them. The radio requests people with missing relatives to bring any DNA samples available (toothbrush, hairbrush, fingernail clippings, and especially, dirty underwear) of your loved one(s) to the laboratory to be decoded. Then, they will try to match your samples with the remains being delivered to the morgue. Apparently, however, the heat was so intense that in many cases the DNA, such as tooth pulp, disintegrated and does not exist. So you are also asked to try to bring dental records and so on along with the hairbrushes, dirty clothing, and toothbrushes. They also try to unite dissociated body parts back into a single human being's remains. North/South traffic is held up while convoys of perhaps 5-10 medical looking trucks deliver items to the temporary morgues. We passed this section and made it to 23rd street in about 45 minutes. A religious group often mentioned in the newspapers was having a sit in vigil for people persecuted in their homeland. We turned East onto 23rd Street. Both sides of the Street from the West Side highway towards the center of Manhattan (This is a complicated patch of streets.) were lined with tents, beds, cots, chairs, and piles and piles of bottled water and supplies in green duffle bags. People were smiling and laughing here and there, but no one was happy. Signs said: No more donations please. We got home and cleaned up. Claudia and I were invited to a birthday party in Brooklyn in an incredible apartment that is right on the water under the Williamsburg Bridge. I did not want to get caught in traffic and wondered whether to go. Through the binoculars, I saw there were lots of incoming traffic but no outgoing traffic on the Williamsburg. The Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge were packed both directions. I do my own helicopter bridge traffic reports out the window. In less than a party mood, we went. Everything was excellent, but the WTC towers, normally directly out their window, were gone. The host had actually that very afternoon gone into Manhattan and walked up to within one block of the fallen towers. He regretted not having brought goggles and a mask. His eyes burned and felt his eyelids sandpapered his eyeballs when he blinked I thought something still stuck up in the air a few floors. He said no. It is totally flat except the facade still stands. He did not seem happy that he went and said it was devastating to look at. In Berlin in 1964 I took the bus tour of the city two times. Once took it with the tourists, and they described the city in English and French. They stopped at the bombed out church that is a memorial. The guide, bored, recited to us the memorized text trying to interest us. People were babbling and chattering in many languages. Planning lunch, the next trip, and so on. I took the bus tour with all Germans and with a German guide. When we got to the blown up church, people were totally awake. The German guide parroted his descriptions. One person asked, what did this look like after the bombings at the surrender. Were all the other buildings bulldozed down and they left the church? No one was talking. The guide said 'Alles war mit dem Boden gleichgemacht,' everything was flat with the earth. That bus had the stillest silence I had every heard. To look about and see the existing buildings and imagine this was all flat vacant lots filled with scattered debris was difficult. We left that scene and got on to more normal things and life returned to the bus. The WTC space, according to my friend, looks like vacant lots full of debris. The WTC towers seem to have collapsed and fallen into their basements and subbasements. You would not know there had ever been any big structures there. I did not mention to my wife and family the things I described in the first letter. Claudia was so upset about everything and wanted the family to have dinners together and all be home. My family was unaware of my observations. Someone on the radio was talking about the possibility of a gigantic stock market fall. I told my wife that we were positioned in the market to make a fortune. She almost barfed and told me not to joke. On Sunday afternoon Claudia received my letter. Two friends came to visit us in NJ that have read the letter. We did not even mention the letter or its contents. At the party Saturday night, my wife told me that she would have held someone's hand. It would have made it easier. I did not mention it in the first letter, but it seems to me relevant to something. When a person jumped alone, s/he went to the edge, stopped, looked over, and jumped like you would go into a pool. Those that went in pairs simply came out of a smoky nowhere inside of the building and walked over the edge with no pause, hesitation, or last second spring. For those of you who have not managed to get through, yes I am fine. I work about 3 miles from the World Trade Center. I got in around 8:50 this morning and had just made the coffee when a co-worker came in and said, "Have you heard about the plane?" She had noticed a plane flying really low and had then heard that it had crashed into the WTC. The only radio program we could find was some two-host wacky morning show, and we all thought it was a bizarre and horrifying accident until I heard these lunatics report the second plane in the South tower. The phones rang off the hook, and once everyone reported to work, we all headed home. I live on the Upper East Side - 85th and 2nd, and the office is on 5th Ave and 28th Street. So that's about 3 miles as the crow flies. But I didn't want to walk past Times Square, the Empire State Building or the UN because none of us knew what was going to happen. So I walked all the way to the West side and then crossed through the park. Must have been 4-6 miles. By the time I hit 6th Avenue and 30th Street, I stopped to look south. I watched in horror as the North tower crumbled in front of my eyes. There were people screaming and crying in the street. Everyone was crowded round TVs in bars and stores, or around transister radios on the street. The atmosphere is bizarre. Everyone is zombie-like. At the time of writing, there are reports of 20k+ dead. The West Side highway is a temporary morgue. I don't know how to respond to this. Today is a tragedy. If you believe in a god, please pray for the dead and their survivors. Hoping none of you are directly affected by this horrible action. My office windows were blown in by the blast when the southern tower collapsed. Thank God I was already on my way home. Thank God I made it home safely today, without a scratch. I will be bensching gomel in shul on Thursday. Locked in my desk sits my great-grandmother's siddur, published in Vienna in 1878. I had an appointment to meet with a book conservator tomorrow to have it properly preserved. Inside the cover, my GGM, then my GM, listed the births, marriages, and deaths in our family from the death of my GGGM and GGGF in 1893 through the marriage of Uncle Charlie in 1932. The text is below. This siddur survived pogroms in Hungary, the journey to America, and 3 generations. I won't know if it survived today's tragedy until I can get back into my office, and I don't know when that will be. Thank God I have a scan of the writing inside the cover. I am sending this cause many people not here say they feel connected yet disconnected from what is going on. we are trying to help people know what we are feeling here. Good morning. It's about 8 a.m. here in NYC. Thought I'd give you an update on how things are. Honestly, right now, it's just eerily quiet. Normally by this time, there's a hustle and bustle of people heading to work, walking their dogs, kids going to school, etc. Instead, there's just silence. Every once in a while, the silence is broken by a military plane or helicopter flying overhead. I have yet to work up the courage to walk the one block to the river and see what's left of lower Manhattan, now that the smoke has cleared. I'm finally able to re-open my windows this morning, and let some fresh air in. Last night, at times, the smoke was unbearable and our apartment stank. Yesterday afternoon, I walked 5 blocks to my local bloodbank to offer my O- blood. As I headed over there, the wind was blowing the smoke over my neighborhood, and with it were the thousands of pieces of paper that had been floating with the smoke all day. It was such an odd and strangely beautiful sight. The papers were flickering and sparkling in the late afternoon sun. I could only imagine that each one might represent the soul of somebody lost in the destruction on his or her way up to heaven. As I walked a little further, some of the papers were fluttering towards the ground. One landed near me, and a woman went over to pick it up. I could see that it was a page from an annual report, or some similar financial document. Pristine and white, save for one charred edge. Such an important document to somebody, 24 hours ago, now just a useless piece of paper, signifying nothing. The sense of unrest and unprotectedness is strong. All evening long, we jumped at every bump and noise, afraid we were once again hearing the sound of airplanes hitting buildings, or buildings collapsing. My ears strain to hear every airplane overhead, even though I know that they can only be "our guys" right now. As I embark on a walk to the river, I pray for what I will see, and pray that I will see some navy ships in the harbor, a visible symbol that we are, perhaps, protected from any more destruction any time soon. As for yesterday, at this point, it¹s just an unreal dream. The last 24 hours feel like a lifetime. I wouldn¹t be surprised to see a few gray hairs on my head. Seeing one of those towers collapse was an image I will never, ever forget in all my life. The sheer senselessness of it all. The sheer cowardice, too. People who destroy, without even standing up to fight like men and take credit for their actions. Give us a real enemy, and we will fight. Give us a nameless, faceless enemy, and we¹re powerless. Let us all pray ­ for those who are still trapped in the wreckage ­ for those who have perished ­ for those who have lost friends & loved ones ­ and for the safety and security of all our people. Ofcourse it was cancelled but I was already on my way there. It was awful. All the people in droves on the street just walking around with this lost look and a lot of people had no shoes and were covered in soot. This one man told me he just got out of the building but had seen bodies falling past his office window before he escaped. My heart and prayers are with all those families who have friends and loved ones in the building. I used to work at the Citibank in WTC and am thinking about those I worked with there, but I am sure they must be safe because it was the ground floor and they had a great chance to get out. I'm concerned for x's family though. Many of her cousins are firefighters and cops. I called her last night but have not heard back to make sure her family was ok. What a horrendous tragedy, I'm scared about what will be next. They have closed off our area below 14th Street. Yesterday I went to St. Vincent's to volunteer and will try to return today. To walk out on 7th Avenue and see nothing downtown brings such an immediate sense of loss, and I don't think the true impact of this has even set in yet for us all. Dear ones, Almost anything one can say about the terrorism last Tuesday is not adequate. Seeing the plane crashing through one of the World Trade Towers, seeing the buildings fall and the slow disappearing of the rubble beneath--these are events and sights none of will forget. It's like a bad science fiction movie. As someone older than you, as someone of a previous generation, as someone who loves you, as a father and friend, I feel the need to communicate my thoughts about our lives right now. I know you didn't ask, and it's not necessary to respond. I was a wee babe when Pearl Harbor was bombed, a child when the atom bomb was dropped twice on Japan, but I lived through the Cold War days of the Fifties when we feared nuclear war, and I lived through the terrible days of the Sixties and Seventies when a series of assassinations--John Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr., John Lennon--and our well-intentioned misadventure in Vietnam occurred with the loss of forty thousand American lives and who knows how many from other countries, both sides. Here's something I "professed" to my two freshman classes this past week, many of whom were living away from home and family for the first time: On a day like this, when our feelings have been so wrenched, when sadness, fear, and anger take turns in our hearts, it is good to remember that terrorism is not normal, that such evil is not normal, that such acts are cowardly. It is not courageous to commit suicide. Especially when you kill innocent strangers-and when you don't even stick around to live with the consequences of your act. Courage is in those firemen who go into a burning skyscraper to try to save the trapped people. Courage consists of sticking something good out, of staying in it for the long haul, whether it be getting up and going to work every day to contribute your part to the world and to support your family, whether it be staying in a relationship with someone you love and respect through good times and bad, whether it be living with hope and ideals even when such matters are challenged. On days like this, it is good to remember that our civilization, with all its shortcomings and all its marvels, exists on the basis of an almost unimaginable amount of human cooperation and good will. The clothes we wear, the food we eat, the buildings we inhabit, the cars we drive, the roads we drive on, the schools we go to-all these things daily depend upon human courage and cooperation of an almost unimagainable scale. Paul Harvey said it best this morning. He said, Nothing has changed, yet everything has changed. As a nation we mourn the loss of life and the horror of the terrorist attack in New York and Washington. We mourn the deaths on the fourth plane that was hijacked yet did not get to its target. We wonder how many more planes were aimed at targets when they were all grounded. As individuals we wonder how this will change our lives. What is sad is that mankind has been killing and hurting others every since that first man found out that a club could be used to beat someone over the head. Death and destruction are part of the human psyche. In other countries around the world people die nearly every day in terrorist attacks. We shake our heads and mutter about how crazy those people are, then we go about our business. Today we are shaking our heads over the loss of life in our country. The United States is the best country to exist on this planet and other people are jealous of that and want to destroy us. If we let this terrorist attack change us from one of the most freedom loving countries in the world to an armed camp that trusts no one then the terrorists have won. We have to be vigilant. We have to try to insure the safety of our citizens but if we go to the extreme then the cure will be worse than the disease. Already rumors are flying around the country. Everything from all the water being poisoned to gasoline going to five dollars a gallon. If those things happen then drastic action will have to be taken to correct the situation. But we cannot all stay at home, under our beds, drinking bottled water for the rest of our lives. Say a prayer to the God you believe in for the comfort of the injured and the families of those who lost loved ones. Donate blood if you can. Stand tall and fly your flag if you have one. Hug your kids and tell your family you love them. Dont be one of those people who spread unfounded rumors. But do not let these cowards destroy your life and our country. We are still the greatest nation on Earth. By the grace of God we will remain the greatest nation on Earth. I "CLEARLY" Remember September 11, 2001, as if it were yesterday. I was driving south of Houston Street in the Village at 9:30 in the morning. It was a picture perfect sunny day and I took the day off from job because it was the Mayoral Elections (Primary Day). Fernando Ferrer was attempting to become the first Puerto Rican Mayor for the City of New York and I was one of his trusted political operatives working that day. As I was making my way north toward Houston St., I heard an explosion or possibly a tremendous BOOM it must have been about 9:40 am, anyway I made it up to Houston St. then made a left going west on Houston St., when I reach Houston and Broadway, I saw one of the Towers engulfed in flames. As I proceeded to the next block, one can clearly see the Tower and a portion of the plane falling from the sky and people running north. I parked the vehicle and ran up to the campaign office to notify everyone, to my surprise, everyone was on the fire escape watching in horror. There is more to say about that day but I rather stop for the moment, I lost my childhood friend "Fireman Angel Jurabe", known to us as "Little Louie", for me his Friendship and Heroism has redefine HUMANITY!
