This is nuts!
>
I can see the Pentagon on fire and smoking from my window here at work. And it's right by my apartment building.... like right by my apartment. It was a huge explosion.
>
Everybody here is terrified and simply frozen.
>
All of the phones lines are busy or down. So I can't call out. I've tried calling you guys.
>
But I'm here, fine, at work. Just really scared right now.
>
But I'm here.

Latest news: All US planes have been grounded.
It's pretty chaotic right now here in DC right now. Everything is being evacuated.
>
We can leave work. But I'm staying right here for now.
>
You can try calling me, but it's highly unlikely that you'll
get through.

I'm talking to Marcie right now. She was lucky... this is the first day that she was teaching out in New York state. But her mom was in the World Trade Center, but she's fine. But no one can get out of the New York City and no one can get into New York City. Everything is in a lockdown.
>
I'm going to probably be staying with a friend you lives way out in Virginia tonight.
>
I will keep you updated.
>
Again...
I'm safe but just really freaked right. Trying to track down all my friends who work in and around DC and NYC.

I'm definitely staying out in Virginia tonight.
But right now, all major roads are like parking lots right now. So we don't know when we'll be able to get out.
>
So I have no choice but to stay right now. As soon as we can get out the city, I'm leaving and staying out in Vienna tonight. I'll call when I have the number of where I'm staying.
>
I'll also call when I know where Bill's at. Right now, it's impossible to find him and I have no idea if or when I'll hear from him.
>
Right now, all you is sirens outside and people walking across all the bridges out of DC. And all of the Capitol Hill area is closed. So we're re-routing everyone here at work you lives in and around the city.

They're closing our office tomorrow. So I will not be at work tomorrow. Again, I'm staying in Vienna, Virginia tonight with my friend Chrystal from work.

We're all leaving work whenever the traffic eases up. We're trying to stay near phones and TVs, where everyone knows where we're at if people need to get a hold of us.
All public transportation (eg, Metro) is closed. So the only way out of the city is by foot and by car (if you find open roads).

So that's the latest update.
I'll know more soon.

Subject:	I'm getting the hell out of Dodge!!

I'm leaving work momentarily. Traffic is clearing a little.

I'm stopping by my apartment to pick up cloths and other necessities. Then I'm going to be staying at my friend Chrystal's apartment in Vienna, Virginia tonight and tomorrow. My apartment is simply too close to downtown and other important military stuff. I will call everyone tonight when I have Chrystal's phone number.

I will not be at work tomorrow, our office will be officially closed. So I will be nowhere near the city tomorrow as well.

You can still leave me messages at home or at work, as I will be checking my messages from Chrystal's.

It's very freaky and creepy around here right now. It's very surreal watching smoke and flames billowing out of the Pentagon from my windows here at work. There are F-16s, military helicopters and other military air craft all throughout the skies of DC, MD & VA. People are roaming the streets trying to get home, trying to make sense of this whole thing and waiting for the next shoe to drop. The entire city is being evacuated and everyone is just very scared right now. We all have connections to family and friends at the Pentagon and all over New York City, so we're all just crossing our fingers and praying a lot. But please let everyone know I'm fine, really scared, but safe and sound.

So I'm signing off from e-mail and work.

My love to all you guys.</text>

Yes, I am getting emails whenever I have a chance to check it. We are still steaming the ocean with the occasional port stop in some country. Currently, we are just waiting for the "word." If things keep going like this, there is no reason why I won't be home in January. I guess this war on terrorism is going to be a long - drawn out process.
Coming soon here (December 10th), I will be getting promoted to 1st Lieutenant. I am pretty excited about that, since I will loose the "butter bars" and gain a bit more prestige.
I know that keep saying that I am getting out as soon as my contract ends, but I am thinking more and more that Force Recon is where I should be. The spots are competitive, but I will have some pretty good reccomendations coming my way. After working with that community, I sincerely believe that they are the best at what they do. The Seals we work with don't even compare to Force Recon--there are many reasons why, I'll let you know when I get home. I'll talk to you later-- I have a few pics attached too - love Johnny</text>

Thanks for contacting us. Everything is OK here. I left the White House compound as soon as I saw the Pentagon explode out the window. It was an amazing and frightening sight. We were all evacuated and OK. I am worried about dozens and dozens of friends at the Pentagon--I am there at least once
every week and on the phone with them every day.

DC is OK except for the Pentagon. Rumors of car bomb at State Dept. and Mall on fire. NYC is in bad shape. Don't worry. We're going to solve this and do the right thing--as soon as I'm allowed back in my office. I know its tough, but try to relax and enjoy yourself. Life must go on.
Best,
-Dave

<text>Tom: I was late turning on the news this morning but just before 9 AM and saw that one of the twin towers at the World Trade Center was hit by a plane; then a few minutes later, another one hit - apparently hi-jacked planes - later the Pentagon was attacked too. They have been evacuating government buildings here. I don't know how all this security breeches have been made - it's unbelievable. Just heard a car bomb exploded outside the State Dept. I was outside a few minutes ago and heard USAF jets in the sky. It sounds like these movies some people like to watch. I would assume this is on RTE television. I was going to do alot of errands today but I will stay put. We are only 2 miles from the CIA so I hope there is no problem there. The latest I heard was that the two towers just collapsed. I am afraid we will be at war soon. All the airports in the USA are closed too. Is it Hussein getting back at the Bushes? This is a real crisis for Bush and us. He was in Florida and now is on his way back. This is awful. I am about ready to go down to Wintergreen.

I guess you should get the package soon. At the same time I mailed a big box to CA and they just got it last Friday. The US mail is so slow. Talk to you later.

Agnes

Dear Agnes- Yesterday afternoon I entered a bar in the heart of Cork City to meet my Mum & Dad. I was met by silence as the customers were frozen watching TV. I was deeply shocked to learn of the attacks on NY, DC & PA .I still can't believe that this happened in America. Its hard to understand. Such an attack never had life in my imagination. It was frightening to watch the 2nd plane crash into the Tower & disappear inside it. I felt sick in my stomach. How could this happen in the Big Apple? Even more of a surprise was the attack on the Pentagon. When the World Trade Towers collapsed it was similar to the end of the Earth. Reports on RTE tell us that 10,000 people were killed in the Towers out of a total of 50,000 who were inside at the time. (How such a large number can fit into a building is a mystery to me but then I grew up in rural Ireland). I've seen photos of victims jumping from the Towers in todays paper trying to escape the fire, smoke & approaching death. One lady who was trapped towards the top of the WTC Towers said in a phone message: "We're f***ing dying up here". These words keep repeating in my mind as I guess its a motto of those who went through Hell & were tortured out of life. Titanic was nothing compared to this. Last night there were reports that the U.S. was bombing Kabul which I thought was way too shortly after the East Coast terror. Before America strikes back (at Who?) they obviously need to investigate every little detail & to think before shooting. Then they can get revenge. The evil terrorists had planned carefully & one wonders what have the FBI & CIA been doing? Some are talking about WW3 but I don't think this will happen. Maybe I'm wrong! Also in my opinion it'll be nearly impossible to identify the majority of the dead in NY (except I guess from dental records). Then I believe many will never be found as they've been blown to pieces. All that remains is ashes & dust. In Ireland most TV coverage has focused on the Towers. I saw the security on the roof of the White House & have heard of the warships & aircraft in the Atlantic (but the horse has already left the stable). After 6:10 Mass this evening I signed a book of condolences & next Friday is a national day of mourning on this island. All shops, schools & bars will be closed. We were delighted & relieved to hear from Noreen that you & all the family in the DC area are safe & well. Thank God. I suppose the U.S. will take years to heal the scars of this most evil of nightmares but life goes on just as it did after WW2, Vietnam & JFK. However this time its hard to describe & realize how deep the wounds are. No terrorism will ever defeat the power of the U.S.A. together with the EU. I hope there won't be a global war. I recieved an email from Robert Kyle whose daughter moved to NY last Sunday & is just across the river from the former WTC. She can clearly seen the disaster. Meaghan was in the WTC on Monday & her boyfriend just got a a new job 1 block away! They are very fortunate not to have been among the injured & dead victims. So lucky T.G.. I must finish now as I want to send an email to Robert, read todays paper & watch the latest on TV. I didn't recieve the package yet but as you said any day now. We'll have to wait & see the coming events unfold. President Bush has the responsibility of the World on his shoulders. Love Thomas XXX. </text>

              <text>Hi everyone,

Just a quick note to let y'all know that I'm OK. I've gotten emails from some
of you this morning and thought I should email everyone else at once. So,
here it is, and apologies to those of you who have already heard from me:

I'm OK. I'm in DC, in my condo. I opened my bedroom window for fresh air
when I got up this morning, and also so I could hear stuff going on. I can
hear the occasional helicopter and siren outside. Foggy Bottom, my
neighborhood, is safe so far. They have evacuated the White House, the State
Department, Treasury, and of course the Hill. People have been on the roof of
my building and the building next door, looking outside. I went up this
morning, and could see the smoke from the Pentagon fire. So far, my building
has been pretty calm, and people in general have been as well. Thank God I
did not have to report to IDA today, as it was my day off. I go to the
Pentagon to catch the IDA shuttle every time I go to work. As far as I know,
the East Side was hit and not South Side, which faces South Parking and the
bus bays.

I didn't know till I loggged in at about 9:30 that the WTC towers had been
hit. I had barely been dressed when my phone rang and my dad called. When I
put my CI on, I heard this really loud, awful grating noise outside, and
looked up to see people standing on the neighboring building's roof.

I cannot get through to anyone on either the Maryland or DC relay. Voice
calls are still very rudimentary for me at this point in CI hearing. Email is
the best way to get in touch with me. Please, New Yorkers, please write in
and let me know you're OK.

GW is closed. I had two classes tonight, but they're now cancelled. I have
been glued to the TV all morning and now early afternoon. To the Goucher
folks, have they closed campus? What's the situation like in Baltimore and
Towson?

I love you all. I will continue to stay in DC for the time being, but may
return to Baltimore this evening, depending on what the situation is like and
what traffic is like (Dad driving). Will keep you all posted.

Please pray for us and for the people who died at the Pentagon, in NYC, and in
Pittsburgh.

Love,
Rachel</text>

<text>This morning there have been confirmed terrorist attacks against
the United States of immense proportion, including incidents in
New York City and Washington D.C. As many of you may have
discovered already, telephone lines are almost completely inaccessible
due to the heavy volume of calls. Internet connections are also being
affected, and ALL airline travel across the country has been
grounded.

Many of us have family and friends in the cities where these tragic
events are unfolding, and there is a feeling of helplessness when
communication to and from those areas is impossible. At the same time,
for your safety, we urge you NOT to attempt to leave campus -- we
are working to identify the most reliable means of communication
possible to help keep you informed as the day progresses.

Counselors are available in the Chesapeake Rooms of the
University Center for students who would like to gather and talk
throughout the day. Know that we will continue to update you
with information as soon as we receive it. As together we
experience a national crisis of unprecedented proportion, each of
us will be relying more than ever on the sense of support and
community that characterizes our campus.

<text>I didn't have to spend the night in the city last night. The Metro opened again and I went home a few hours later, in order to avoid the rush of people. I left the office just after 2:00 and I have never experienced downtown DC so quiet and unpopulated. There were people around, but not many, and cars were quite sparse. Everyone I saw was subdued - if they were talking at all, it was in low voices. There were few street vendors or even homeless people around.

DC is still quiet today, but business is carrying on. The Federal government is open, but is allowing liberal leave, meaning that people who want to take the day off and use a vacation day can do so without being penalized. That seems to be the route most of the businesses downtown are taking. Many of the schools in the area are closed.

I could see the smoke from the Pentagon from our office yesterday. (We are on the uppermost floors of the building about 5 blocks from the White House). It made me think of the eruption of Mt St Helens. On a smaller scale of course. Sirens were going off for most of the day. The city set up a staging area for the Fire Department a block away from the office. They were there to take care of any calls not related to the Pentagon. The engines were parked in rows in the street, just waiting.

I don't know anyone that was hurt yesterday, but I do know two women that happened to be driving by the Pentagon when the airplane hit. One of then ended up with a piece of the plane embedded in her sunroof. She is fine, but understandably shook up - and very glad she had the sunroof closed. She does have quite the souvenir though. . .

This morning National Guard MPs were directing traffic at major intersections. (Part of me kept expecting them to whip out the mirrors on long poles and start checking underneath cars for bombs.) I didn't see any Guardsmen when I went out a little while ago, but I imagine they are not too far away.

I have not been over there yet, but apparently many of the stores along Connecticut Ave have flags hanging in their windows.

I am well, if distracted, and hope you all are too.

<text>... but where I worked, 7 World Trade Center,
collapsed at about 5 yesterday afternoon. I still
can't believe what happened, but am very thankful
that I was able to make it home to my family safely.
My prayers go out to those who didn't.

For those on this list who know people from the
Park Slope UMC, it appears so far that everyone
is ok-- and so far, also the families of Learning
Community Charter School students.

We evacuated our building after we heard the
second explosion, not knowing at the time it
was the second plane. We walked down from
the 22nd floor. I had called Michael after the
first crash when we weren't sure what
had happened. We were well away by
the time the first building collapsed. I was driven
by an inner voice to get home, to keep walking.
Fortunately, I made it to the Christopher Street
PATH station before it stopped running (even
getting a seat in an air-conditioned car) & took
it to Hoboken where the train station was shut
down. I started walking home (about a mile, but
a steep climb up the Palisades) because the buses
weren't running -- they were just waiting for
further instructions. After a few blocks, I was
able to catch a bus.

I gave 2 people I'd never met before a ride to
Newark after running up to tell Michael I was
OK. My return trip to Jersey City was
complicated because the Skyway which I'd
taken & the Turnpike were closed -- but I
was able to get over to Rt. 280 & get back
to JC and pick up Philip (although the traffic
was horrendous with lots of streets closed off
around the hospitals & lots of emergency
vehicles going by).

By the time I got to his school, most of the
children had been evacuated (I think it started
informally with parents just coming to get their
kids & evolved into a formal evacuation). I
took home 2 kids who live around the corner,
because no one could get their dad's cell number
or their emergency contacts. He eventually took
a ferry to Weehawken.

The computer people from my company were in
our back office located in Jersey City (which also
was evacuated yesterday), posted a notice on our
website (fhlbny.com) and are implementing our
disaster recovery plan to get the bank back to
business. Since I give away the money, I most
likely will not be going back as quickly. Obviously
our files are history (as are my drawer full of shoes),
but we have a lot of electronic information backed-up
& all that stuff.

Hugs to all of you,

Beth

Sounds like another terrorist attack

              <text>Tracey,

It makes me sad to know that Molly saw it happen. She is probably old enough to retain some kind of memory, no? (Visual?) How have you talked to her about it? What has she said? Is this her JFK assassination or is she too young?

Lou's cousin Horace died in the building; they grew up together but had not been in touch in a couple of years. To add to the sadness, Lou's mother is entering hospice tomorrow -- her cancer is no longer treatable. She has weeks without a miracle.

Sept. 11 was a school day for me. I was xeroxing articles in Kinko's on Lex. and 78th Street and heard some people talking about a "movie" where a plane flew into the twin towers. I left Kinkos and saw huge plumes of smoke down Lexington, but still had no idea what it was. I entered Hunter and heard some people in the elevator talking about the same movie. Then I went into the classroom and my fellow students were dazed and confused over the events -- by now the second plane had hit. The head of the program came in and gave us the details and announced that all the other classes had been cancelled but, since we are DSW, we have the option of continuing (more capable? more sturdy?). No one wanted to continue -- a few people were in tears and terror since family members worked in or near the building -- but the professor insisted on at least reviewing the reading list for the next week! It was a very bad move. (Clearly, he was never a clinician.)

Thank God no one in the class lost anyone in their immediate families. I am sorry for your student.

<text>Thank you to everyone who has e-mailed/called me/my
parents asking if I am ok. I am, and I will keep this
short as I don't have anything much to contribute to
what you already know.

Yesterday I saw the smoke billowing from the Pentagon
and the streets suddenly gridlocked for hours then
empty, the skies over DC unusually quiet except for
F-16s circling high above. At one point a lone
airliner, probably the last to land, came in on an
unusual flight track, headed right towards the office
balcony on which we stood. Some people jumped back
into the offices. It came closer and closer, then
pulled up and away. Yesterday, as today, people can
be seen studying the skies as they walk, and the sound
of an airplane is enough to stop traffic.

Today, walking to work, I passed a few HUMWVEEs,
manned by soldiers, stationed at each major
intersection. Perhaps an overreaction, but this is
still a nation in shock.

I spoke to some friends in New York, two of whom live
within five blocks of where the World Trade Center
was. One slept through everything. The other saw
both buildings collapse and was covered in dust and
soot.

Perhaps the most disturbing conversation I had was
with a friend who is still in college. She was
sitting, eating breakfast with a dozen friends
yesterday morning, when one of their cell phones rang.
It was their parents, onboard one of the planes,
telling them that a hostess had been stabbed and
wishing them goodbye.

Being me, I have to end with a touch of editorial.
People have been calling this the cowardly act of
madmen. Neither description is constructive or true.
To do what these people did took enormous courage,
created by enormous passion. In the long term the
only solution to the terrorist problem will be to
remove the reason behind their passion by ending
Western support for the thuggish oil regimes, and
supporting third world development.

In the short term, however, bring them to justice.
And if they can't be brought, kill 'em all and let God
sort 'em out.

Josh.

I WISH WE COULD BE THERE TO HELP. US IS ALMOST OUR 2ED HOME. HOW SICK CAN A HUMAN MIND BE TO JUST DESTROY SO MANY LIVES? WE'RE HAPPY BOTH OF YOU ARE OK. OLD GOOD FRIENDS OF OURS IN HARLEMHAVE ONLY AN ANSWERING MACHINE ON,. IT WOULD BE GREAT IF YOU COULD REACH THEM . THE PICTURES OF SOUTH MANHATTAN LOOK LIKE APOCOLYPSE LIKE THE DAY AFTER MOVIE. ALMOST LIKE A HOLLYWOOD... MORE THAN ANYBODY CAN IMAGINE, MORE THAN ANYBODY COULD STAND. WE ARE WITH YOU IN OUR THOUGHTS AND WE'RE MOURNING FOR THE LIVES LOST IN OUR "SECOND HOME COUNTRY"
