<text>September 11, 2001
8:09 p.m.

>To all concerned friends and family members:

Yes, I'm OK

I can't even begin to describe what I saw and
experienced today, it is beyond words.

I was sleeping on the seventh floor of my apartment,
just two blocks from the WTC when the first plane
struck. I jumped out of bed to see what was going on.
I thought it was a building fire at first, there was
alot of smoke in the sky and tons of office paper was
falling from the sky. Rather than watch safely from my
window, I grabbed my camera and headed to the street
to take some photos of what I thought might have been
building fire.

The scene on Greenwich St. outside my door was quickly
beginning to resemble chaos. There was debris raining
down on to the street and as I turned the corner onto Liberty St., I could not believe my eyes. There was a
gaping hole in the side of one of the towers. I was
clicking away and ran down a ramp of a parking garage
on Church St., directly across from the WTC to get a
safe vantage point. A few others had gathered to seek
shelter and scores of people were running out of the
WTC in all directions. Dozens and dozens of people
were jumping out of the upper floors of the tower. It
was horrific sight sight to see, and I was beginning
to realize how serious this was. It's hard to describe
what I was feeling, it was like watching the end of
the world, but it was nowhere near over.

I was focusing my lense up on the towers when I heard
a godawful thunderous sound that was approaching
rapidly closer. It was the second jet, and it sounded
as if the sky was being torn open. It struck the
second tower with such unbelievable speed and force,
ripping right through the building and exploding
through the other side. A huge ball of flames and
black smoke rolled up the side of the second tower and
tons of debris flew outward towards the street.
Hundreds of horrified people began running down the
parking garage ramp towards me to try and get away
from the debris. Only one problem: The metal garage
door was down. They began pounding on the door
frantically yelling for the door to be opened. It was
becoming obvious to me that I needed to get out of
there, fast. I will never forget the look of sheer
terror on these peoples faces.

I wasn't about to stay there at the parking garage and
face even more danger. I decided to make a run for it
to my apartment, a block and a half away. I never knew
what it felt like to "run for your life," now i do. I
ran south on Church St. with everything I had and
managed to escape the falling debris by running
between buildings. Again, the sounds; it seemed like
the end of the world. Sirens, car alarms, screams, and
pieces of the building crashing into the ground with
such force that the ground shook. Flaming debris was
falling far off to my left and right. Small pieces of
puverized concrete made it seem like a hailstorm.
Police were in the street screaming at people to "get
inside." I was in total shock, my mouth was completely
dry, and I've never known such fear in all of my life.
My heart was pounding through my chest and I was
frantically thinking of what to do next.

I ran into my apartment builing to get my three
friends out. At this point I thought we were under a
missle attack, and that there were more on the way. So
we all grabbed a few things, and made for the street.
Two of the girls, my friends Barbara and Natasha had
small dogs with them. We had to leave my friend
chani's cat behind, because it had hidden. We started
walking south on Greenwich and had planned to go to a
friend's apartment in Tribeca. I decided to stop in
the deli and get a few bottles of water for me and the
girls, just in case. Chani followed me into the store,
Barbara and Natasha stayed outside with their dogs.

As I paid for the waters, we heard another loud,
terrible roaring sound. There was a bar at the back of
the deli, and Chani and I made our way back into the
bar were about thirty other frightened people had come
to get off of the street. The ground shook and the
roaring sound seemed to get louder and louder. I
really thought we were in serious trouble. Next, the
shockwave from the collapsing tower came down the
street in the form of ash, smoke and debris, leaving
the street completely dark with ash.

Pete

Part II
Once in the bar, people became increasingly
hysterical as we endured the collapse of both towers
just two and a half blocks away. The ground shook as
though it were an earthquake, and the immense roar of
the buildings crashing to the ground is a sound I will
never forget. All those people, the loss of life that
occured at that moment is incomprehensible.

We were asked to evacuate the building by several ash
covered firemen, who gave us dust masks and instructed
us to head towards the Brooklyn Bridge. The ground and
everything outside was covered in two to three inches
of ash. The sky all around was as black as coal in
stark contrast to the light colored ash that almost
looked like freshly fallen snow. There was an eerie
silence except for the faint sound of sirens in the
distance. As Chani and I passed Trinity Church, an old
gothic looking church, the bells began tolling. It was
an eerie, ominous feeling. We marched on, passed the
Stock Exchanged and eventually made our out of the
smoke and ash,to safety.

Our friends, Barbara and Natasha, for whom we had
feared the worst, turned out to be okay. Apparently,
they were taken to a hospital in Newark and were doing
fine, which was great to hear. I was lucky enough to
catch an Amtrak train out of Penn Station and was
crossing my fingers until we got to the Jersey side.
As I looked back towards Manhattan, there was a plume
of smoke that stretched upward and outwards for miles
from were the WTC once stood.

I'm thankful to be alive.

Dear Friends...

We are desperately concerned over the terrorist attacks
unfolding today.

We still cannot comprehend the horror of this attack
against our fellow human beings... and indeed, quite
possibly many of our subscribers. We will attempt to locate
internet resources to help make sense of this insanity and
provide pertinent information in the days ahead.

We offer our deepest sympathies to those suffering loss of
friends or family. With so many subscribers to our
newsletter, it's certain that many were hurt in some form
today, or personally knew victims.

If we may help in any way, please let us know. We're still
trying to figure out what we can do.

We will not be publishing our regular newsletter today.
Please gather with your family members and loved ones, and
take stock of what is important in your life, and do
whatever is necessary to protect it.

Our era of bliss in the United States may be over, and we
must ALL patriotically grip our neighbor's hand firmly and

united force can make certain...

Not here. Not again.

Take care of yourself, and your family.

It was not until around 14th street that i could see the clouds of smoke and dust. I walked out onto the West Side highway and south on the bike/walkway that is part of the new park that runs from 59th down to the Battery. Straight ahead was the visible evidence of the attack--a gigantic column of smoke, constantly shifting in shape and shade of gray, roiling. There was little wind and the tower of smoke just stood there. TV commentators remarked during the evening about the absence of the towers from the skyline, but that was rhetoric, I think. In fact, the hole left by the collapse of the towers was filled by the column of smoke all day. When you looked south there was no more of an open vista than there had been the day before. The aftermath of the attack more than adequately filled the hole in the world.

Ten blocks south I turned into the West Village and went home. Nan and I came out a half hour later and walked south down Hudson toward the WTC. There was no traffic not related to the attack. Thousands of people were walking there --like us to see, to help if possible, to give blood. Cameras were everywhere. Media people were spread throught lower Manhattan and the crowds of civilians, workers, and media folks grew denser as we got closer. By the time we got "there" the limits of the perimeter had been pushed north by the police to Duane Street about 6 blocks north of the WTC. We joined everyone else watching the smoke and dust rise and change; we took pictures and gaped at the exhuasted fire fighters and patient police. These were almost all men at Hudson and Duane, but we saw many women officers on Greenwich and on the cross streets.

We could not see the devastation, so our imagination turned to the implications of what we could see, mostly the faces and bodies of men and a few women in one kind of uniform or another struggling north out of the WTC obviously at the end of hours of rescue and recovery work. Unlike us in the crowd, in shorts and t-shirts, Lakers ball caps and ban-rays against the afternoon sun, they were uniformly gray with dust, helmets in one hand, goggles and respirators in another. Fire fighters wore the same almost antique fashions of fire service over the last 50 years--heavy twill shirts and pants, thick jackets, big gloves, huge boots. We also tried to guess what the big trucks were bringing in, besides fresh workers. We wandered around but saw nothing we could do but gape. We walked over to the river and there saw the great concentraion of equipment that even by then had poured into the lower half of the city; fire trucks, earth movers, back-hoes, bull dozers, flat bed trailers, busses, emergency trucks, portable generators, ambulances; it was like a grotesquely grown up version of a Richard Scarry book.

We bought some arab food for dinner, deciding to preserve our own larder in case the city stayed shut down, and went home.

Security issues are different. Your first obligation, as a citizen in a democracy republic, as one who believes that a citizen still does have something to say in National Security Policy; I mean thats the tradition, fellas.

Just what did your ancestors do out there on the Taos Trail,… well they circled the wagons, sent out scouts.

What were those city walls all about, but let us decide which ones, those fecund holy, joined together by Rablais, opening to the universal were still trying to pin down.

The walls were for the whole nation to go inside and pour hot oil on the enemies of the state, because if you didnt your enemy would chop off your head and fuck your neighbour every which way. Yah, you sure as hell had something to say.

Rablais said ´Make love and war… at the same time, the holy and the humble,… now thats innovative democratic National Security Policy…

Gee, opens a whole range of possibilities, may be universality, reversibility; I am not, remember?

Its all there, blood in the desert in winter, same political geographies, chronotopes, ´the lacework of time, as they say.´

(…) whats written plain that isnt much, its transparency that counts… the lacework of time as they say…

P.S. Does anyone know how to reach Bill Hawkins these days? Is he back in Reno?

<text>To everyone who I have not yet spoken to, thank-you for your calls and
e-mails. I have lost my voice, so I am unable to call y'all back. I am
o.k. and a little shaken up, even after a couple of days.

unfortunately, i was right outside of the wtc when it happened. i was on a
subway with my girlfriend heading downtown when the planes hit the towers,
and had no idea what had happened. the subway operator broadcast over the
loudspeaker that the train was being re-routed due to police activity at one
of the downtown stations. we changed trains to get closer to her new
apartment which is on nassau street, which is 2 blocks from the wtc. when
we got out of the subway, we saw a bunch of people milling around and
thought that there was a bomb threat at one of the downtown government
buildings. then we looked up and saw that one of the wtc towers was on
fire. i didn't think much of it, since i was in la when the first
interstate tower caught fire and it looked the same. then as we continued
to walk south, we noticed that the other tower was on fire and wondered how
the fire had jumpted from one to the other. then we saw the gaping holes in
the sides of the buildings and were shocked. we figured that that they had
been bombed or hit by rockets or something like that. we continued to walk
south, while the police started to clear the area. at this time we were one
block from her apartment. the police wouldn't let us go any further, so we
started argueing with them that we lived only a block away. instead we
ducked down an alley that runs parallel to broadway, thinking that we
outwitted the police and continued on our way to her apartment. thats when
we heard a high pitched sound that started getting louder and closer, the
ground started to tremble and the noise became much deeper. we thought that
it was a rocket/scud missile and that we were being bombed. at this point
we still didn't know about the planes. it was very scary, people were
running everywhere, it was the worse panick situation that i have ever
experienced, far worse than earthquakes or the la riots. at this time we
looked behind us and saw a huge cloud of ash and smoke coming at us in 2
directions. we weren't sure whether we should run or duck and cover. so we
started to run, but the cloud was coming very fast and we didn't know what
had happened. if it was a bomb, where did it come from, where did it hit.
we continued to run up one street and could see the cloud in front of us and
so we turned a different direction and the cloud was both behind us and to
the side. then as we turned again, there was a patch of blue sky so we ran
towards it, hoping and thinking that it was towards the east river. we kept
running till we reached the brooklyn bridge. fortunately, we managed to
outrun the cloud but had no idea what had happened. we walked up the fdr
and occasionally looked back. you could only see one of the towers. as we
kept walking i turned around again and only saw a cloud of smoke. cell
phones weren't working and rumors were rampant. no one really knew what was
happening. we walked up the fdr to my office to use the bathrooms, phones
and watch the news. after that we walked to my girlfriends old apartment at
100 st and cpw, she hadn't fully moved out of it yet. it was basically an 8
mile walk to get home. when we finally turned on the news at 4:00pm and
watched the replay of the towers coming down, it dawned on us that the cloud
we outran was full of glass. if we had ducked and covered instead of
running, we could of been cut to shreds. wow! the next day, we went back
downtown, to survey the damage and get a couple of things from her
apartment. she has asthma, so we needed to get her respirator. we had a
very difficult time getting into the area, since my girlfriend is in the
process of moving downtown, she has no i.d. with that address on it. she
works in tribeca, so we managed to get past the first 2 checkpoints by
showing her business card and saying that it was a work/live loft. after
that we walked made it past a couple of other checkpoints by saying that we
were heading to the downtown hospital to get her a new inhaler, which was
true. once we reached the national guard checkpoint, they informed us that
this was a federal bio-hazard quarantine area and that no one was allowed to
go any further. since we needed to get to the hospital, the national guard
said that nypd may be able to escort us there. while we were speaking to
the nypd a convoy of construction equipment, bulldozers, steam shovels and
dump trucks drove past us, kicking up huge clouds of dust. even breathing
through filtering masks we started coughing, my girlfriend had an ashtma
attack and her inhaler was virtually empty. the nypd officer got his
personal car and drove us to the hospital. she was given an ashtma
treatment and is fine. from the hospital, we were escorted by national
guardsmen the last two blocks to her new apartment. the whole area is
covered with 3-4 inches of ash, windows are broken and rubble is everywhere.
all of the fire hydrants were open to try to keep the dust down. it felt
like a twilight zone episode, very surreal and unbelievable. when we were
downtown, we met a couple of people who live in the area and their building
has a roofdeck. we went up to the deck and could see right into the area
where the wtc use to be. we saw the corner of the north tower that is still
standing, very eery and 7 wtc completely flat and laying on its side across
the street. there were countless firemen and trucks spraying water all over
the place trying to get the fires under control. the smoke and dust was
very thick, you really needed the filtering masks. yesterday, i could only
take the subway to 42nd street, unfortunately with the office at 24th, it
wasn't close enough. i had finally had enough, instead of going to work i
called the gym and scheduled a massage. it made a huge difference and i
feel alot better. today i'm in the office, and it's not quite business as
usual, but there are a lot of people here. i hope that you are well and
that everyone you know in ny is accounted for.
Thank-you,
andy

I'm having a lot of trouble agreeing with anything on this subject. If the
US doesn't respond, I think we can expect subsequent terrorist attacks here.
If the US does respond, I think we can expect subsequent terrorist attacks
here. We must get on with our lives, but I'm pretty damn frightened by
what's going on.

Part of me wants to just take off for the mid-west for awhile and rent a
cabin in the middle of nowhere. All of our friends would, of course, be
welcome to seek refuge with us. :-)

Here's an article written by an Afghani-American writer. I think you'll
find it interesting, if you don't agree with its contents. Personally, I
find it terrifying, because most of what he says seems to be grounded in
some very painful facts.

Much love,

-----------------------------

I've been hearing a lot of talk about "bombing Afghanistan back to the Stone
Age." Ronn Owens, on KGO Talk Radio today, allowed that this would mean
killing innocent people, people who had nothing to do with this atrocity,
but "we're at war, we have to accept collateral damage. What else can we
do?" Minutes later I heard some TV pundit discussing whether we "have the
belly to do what must be done."

And I thought about the issues being raised especially hard because I am
from Afghanistan, and even though I've lived here for 35 years I've never
lost track of what's going on there. So I want to tell anyone who will
listen how it all looks from where I'm standing.

I speak as one who hates the Taliban and Osama Bin Laden. There is no doubt
in my mind that these people were responsible for the atrocity in New York.
I agree that something must be done about those monsters. But the Taliban and
Ben Laden are not Afghanistan. They're not even the government of
Afghanistan. The Taliban are a cult of ignorant psychotics who took over
Afghanistan in 1997. Bin Laden is a political criminal with| a plan. When
you think Taliban, think Nazis. When you think Bin Laden, think Hitler. And
when you think "the people of Afghanistan" think "the Jews in the
concentration camps."

It's not only that the Afghan people had nothing to do with this atrocity.
They were the first victims of the perpetrators. They would exult if someone
would come in there, take out the Taliban and clear out the rats nest of
international thugs holed up in their country.

Some say, why don't the Afghans rise up and overthrow the Taliban? The
answer is, they're starved, exhausted, hurt, incapacitated, suffering. A few
years ago, the United Nations estimated that there are 500,000 disabled
orphans in Afghanistan--a country with no economy, no food. There are
millions of widows. And the Taliban has been burying these widows alive in
mass graves. The soil is littered with land mines, the farms were all
destroyed by the Soviets. These are a few of the reasons why the Afghan
people have not overthrown the Taliban.

We come now to the question of bombing Afghanistan back to the Stone Age.
Trouble is, that's been done. The Soviets took care of it already. Make the
Afghans suffer? They're already suffering. Level their houses? Done. Turn
their schools into piles of rubble? Done. Eradicate their hospitals? Done.
Destroy their infrastructure? Cut them off from medicine and health care?
Too late. Someone already did all that. New bombs would only stir the rubble
of earlier bombs. Would they at least get the Taliban? Not likely.

In today's Afghanistan, only the Taliban eat, only they have the means to
move around. They'd slip away and hide. Maybe the bombs would get some of
those disabled orphans, they don't move too fast, they don't even have
wheelchairs. But flying over Kabul and dropping bombs wouldn't really be a
strike against the criminals who did this horrific thing. Actually it would
only be making common cause with the Taliban--by raping once again the
people they've been raping all this time.

So what else is there? What can be done, then?

Let me now speak with true fear and trembling. The only way to get Bin Laden
is to go in there with ground troops. When people speak of "having the belly
to do what needs to be done" they're thinking in terms of having the belly
to kill as many as needed. Having the belly to overcome any moral qualms
about killing innocent people. Let's pull our heads out of the sand. What's
actually on the table is Americans dying. And not just because some
Americans would die fighting their way through Afghanistan to Bin Laden's
hideout. It's much bigger than that folks. Because to get any troops to
Afghanistan, we'd have to go through Pakistan. Would they let us? Not
likely. The conquest of Pakistan would have to be first. Will other Muslim
nations just stand by?

You see where I'm going. We're flirting with a world war between Islam and
the West. And guess what: that's Bin Laden's program. That's exactly what he
wants. That's why he did this. Read his speeches and statements. It's all
right there. He really believes Islam would beat the west. It might seem
ridiculous, but he figures if he can polarize the world into Islam and the
West, he's got a billion soldiers. If the west wreaks a holocaust in those
lands, that's a billion people with nothing left to lose, that's even better
from Bin Laden's point of view. He's probably wrong, in the end the west
would win, whatever that would mean, but the war would last for years and
millions would die, not just theirs but ours. Who has the belly for that?

Bin Laden does. Anyone else?

They showed the footage of the 2nd plane crashing into the building.

HORRIBLE. All our IM people are accounted for but there must be tons of

loss especially with the collapse of the building. They said a plane

crashed at Camp DAvid right now...

All planes were ordered to land.

<text>I'm going crazy. I can't believe all of this. It's been sitting in me all day, festering and I've been listening to the radio and watching the smoke and wondering what this means for me. I feel like it's normal, too. Normal in that I've seen these images before. But then I was on Ave A in a big group of people at 9:30 this morning, staring and a big hole in the side of one tower, and flames leaping out of the other, wondering with one man why we saw flashes of lights (emergency lights? electrical fires?). I felt like crying. And then I went to the roof with my roommate with all our neighbors and we saw the first one collapse. Everyone was screaming "Oh my god!" from all the rooftops. And I'm realizing that I've just been numb all day. I not comprehending. And now I'm beginning to realize what's going on. Every time I begin to feel better, I go on the roof or outside and I see that cloud hanging overhead. I went up at sunset and it was beautiful in a cruel way. The sun was making it pink. Everything was pink. And there was another guy on the roof, just sitting in silence, watching the pink cloud moving over the river to Brooklyn. If you didn't know what it was, it would be very pretty. Like the cloud coming from the incinerators at Auschwitz. I need to cry and sob and drink heavily. It's all so surreal. The city is shut down completely. I need an ID to get onto my block since they don't want people walking down here. They want to keep the Williamsburg Bridge clear for emergency vehicles. The city is horribly silent, except for sirens. People walking, people standing in groups on the sidewalk talking, glancing at the cloud. The only cloud in the sky on a beautiful fall day. We all talk in whispers. Businesses south of 14th St are closed tomorrow so I doubt we'll have classes. I'm going to try to give blood tomorrow, go over to St. Vincent's. They say they only want type O- tonight, which I'm not. I hear the wait to give blood is several hours. I need to do SOMETHING. But I'm unskilled. School and theater and art seem so inconsequential. How can I even think about Tosca? Dumb Tosca. Tosca must be now set in some war torn World Trade Center to have any meaning. Why did I pick this self-centered business? Or is art therapeutic? can I use it to help me understand? to help someone recover? Needless to say, I am not getting any work done. But no one is. Concentration levels are nil.
I also wish I could turn to religion or some other higher power for comfort. If only I believed in something. One of my friends emailed that we were in his prayers. If it works for him, that's fine.
Jojo has been emailing me all day. She sounds worse than me. I called Al and made sure that Nana was alive for Jojo. Al couldn't really understand the concern but I made him tell me that she was fine so I could tell Jojo that.
Michael and I are going to make some cookies. Comfort time. And I've turned off the radio and tv. Billie Holiday is going to be my friend now. I'd like to go out to a bar or go dancing.
Thanks for writing. I'm sure your friend is fine. I'd only be concerned if he worked at the World Trade Center or is a policeman or firefighter. (Apparently whole fire units are missing, over 200 people.) Ok. We have to go buy some butter. Keep in touch; it's good to hear from those outside New York (you especially).

Are you listening to the news?
They're talking about a plane that crashed into the World Trade Center,
then another plane crashed into a building next to it.
Messed up, huh?!!!

Yeah..I heard that on the radio too.
Also, I saw a picture on the MSNBC website that showed both buildings at the point that the 2nd plane hit the tower.

Todd:

They're now saying that it's a terrorist attack...
BOTH towers were hit and one of the planes, they're certain, was hijacked.
They (FBI) are thinking this was a planned event...
especially since this is the busiest time of the day for the WTC,
so terrorists would be able to take out a whole bunch of people at once.

The WTC is on fire!

I just told you this, Mandy, but Becky, Todd, they said that the first
plane that crashed into the World Trade Center they believe was hijacked
from BOSTON. It could have been anybody on that plane, you guys, some
random people totally unaware, just getting on their plane home - it could
have even happened yesterday.

I can't stop shaking. I feel like I am babbling.

I just heard something about that, and I was thinking the same thing. I
imagine you're feeling pretty shaken by this.
FLASH!! I just heard that there was an explosion at the Capital.

Are you guys able to get any work done?
I just wanna listen to what's going on.
Our phone queue has dropped drastically in number!!
I guess people are
glued to their radios and TVs.

The second tower hit in New York collapsed.
They were still evacuating, I'm sure, and that means also rescue workers and anyone in the surrounding
area have been killed/seriously injured.
The smoke cloud spread out throughout so much of the city in that area....

Also, TWO of the 3 planes that have caused the tragedy were hijacked from
Boston.

I just saw footage of the towers falling. It was so surreal.
I heard something about another hijacked plane from Pittsburgh that is heading for
Washington. I don't know if this is true or not.

Well, I think this means war.....

Subject: Volunteer Information: Cheer on WTC Rescue Workers (ongoing)

I'm planning on going down to Christopher Street and the Westside Highway to cheer on the WTC rescue workers 2-3 nights a week after work, every week. Anyone who wants to join me is welcome. My plan is to leave from here at 5:30pm to go down there on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights, weather permitting.

I've been down there twice so far, and it's really amazing. While there are some real emotional moments (more about that below), on the whole, it is a very encouraging, and inspiring experience. I don't know if anyone saw the Today Show yesterday morning, but they taped a segment about us on Sunday. I've yet to see it, but from what I heard, and from what I've seen first-hand, the rescue workers really appreciate all of the cheering and moral support. Words can't describe the feeling you get when you're out there in the middle of the West Side Highway holding up a "thank you" sign, and rescue workers going to/from the World Trade Center honk their horns, sound their sirens, wave at you and smile. I've met some pretty incredible folks in the short time that I've been down there.

If you're hesitant to go there because you're worried that it will be very emotional, at times, it is. On Sunday, ambulance convoys bearing recovered victims passed by us twice. Many of us cried, but there were also lots of hugs to go around for those who needed them. There are also great moments, like when one of the rescue workers stopped to drop off a batch of letters and some stuffed animals that had been given to them by schoolchildren, and hug a few of us. Or the debris truck driver who stopped to tell us how he could not believe that there were people down there to cheer them on every day, 24 hours a day. There are the thumbs-up that you get from NYPD, State Troopers, debris truck drivers and Verizon workers, and the knowledge that what you're doing down there really does make a difference.

If you're concerned that you'll see something that is visually upsetting, rest assured that you will not see anything worse than trucks carting off concrete and steel debris. You will not see anything worse - any ambulances that pass by with remains are accompanied by a police escort, so you have advance "warning" and you cannot see inside the ambulances. Some days it smells smoky, but not any more than it does outside the Chase building.

There's no minimum time commitment - even if all you have is a few free minutes, it makes a difference. There are plenty of signs available, so you don't even need to bring one. There's always someone down there, and the people are very friendly. To get there from the Chase Plaza office, all you have to do is take the Uptown 1 or 2 train to Christopher Street, and then walk about 5 blocks west to the West Side Highway. You can't miss it - there are "thank you" signs all over the place.

Personally, I've found that being down there has improved my overall outlook on this whole thing, and that it's a very healing experience that I'd like to share with anyone who's interested.

Carol

<text>Hi everyone. I can't write much because words are too restricting. I am safe, at least physically. My dad was in the Trade Center getting off the PATH train as the first one hit. He got out immediately and though the morning was full of the most uneasy confusion (I nearly fainted and was hysterical for a time) My dad and my mom are safe at home. Campus is weird (can't think of any words). People here lost families and friends. No one can fully comprehend anything. I'm not going to be in my room tonight. After a candlelight vigil at midnight, I'll be sleeping in a friends room. I hope you and yours are not directly affected by this even though I know we all are. I'm leaving my room now. I don't know what else to say. I love you all.

Steve

Michael just was able to get through to me by cell phone. He and David Frank are together and are being evacuated even further from the area. Both are a bit dirty and tired but OK. Both got out just before our tower collapsed. Needless to say we lost everything else but that seems of little consequence now that we now that all of our employees (friends) made it out of the building safely. Mike confirmed that the Ingram Micro folks got out ahead of him and he is of the belief that all of our customers are safe as well.

Karen, Mike's wife, is obviously very shaken but says she is doing OK. We really thought we lost both Mike and David as we watched our tower crash to the ground. I am sure both got a little winded running down 78 flights of stairs but thank goodness the report from here is good and that all are safe. Mike pressed me for a quota reduction so this event has not changed his sense of humor at least.

Will keep you posted.

Thank you Rich for the update.

Further:

I have been in blackberry contact with Joe Santoro, he and David Frank were there to have a meeting at 9 am. in our office. Joe is safe, currently 10 blocks away from the building. We do not yet know how David and Mike are since the building has collapsed. We will keep updating as we received information.

I have received so many calls I thought it important to update all of you on what we know so far. Our building was the tower that was hit by the first plane and it hit above our office which is on the 78th floor. The plane hit from the North side and we face south. We had a sales training meeting in progress or about to start (9:00) with one of our VARs, AMC. Mike Hingson was in the building early which we have confirmed. Kevin Washington was one train stop away and Tony Comito and Steve Poaletti are OK and were also not yet in the building.

Michael called his wife Karen just minutes after the first plane struck to say he was not hurt and was being evacuated. This will obviously take a long time and we pray that he is OK. Karen and I will reamin in close contact until we hear from Mike that he is safe. As soon as I get an update on Michael and our customers I will let you know immediatley. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mike (and Rosell) and everyone in both buildings.

              <text>Hello,

Thanks so much for getting in touch with me and
offering me support, well wishes, and deep concern. I
would like to express my deep gratitude at your
consideration. Please rest assured that I am fine -
save your prayers and attention and thoughts for the
injured and for the relatives of rescue workers,
civilians, and government officials who are injured or
who might have perished. I personally do not know of
any injured or missing people, but many people I have
spoken with do, and it is heart-wrenching to hear
their tales.

I have not returned to Lower Manhattan since my
evacuation around 9:35am on Tuesday morning, but I
have a doctor friend who has assisted some people near
'ground zero', and another friend who was near the
towers when they collapsed, and I understand that it
is a horrific sight. Our usually intrusive,
propagandistic media is sparing (at least Americans)
the worst scenes.

Secondly, I apologize if I was unable to write back a
personal e-mail to you. I have received several
hundred e-mails and several dozen phone calls from
wellwishers and spent much of Tuesday and Wednesday on
the phone and on e-mail with supporters. It is very
inspiring to receive support not just from my
immediate friends and family. At the same time, it is
hard to write a unique, detailed response to everyone
at an appropriate level of detail. I hope you
understand.

Along with everybody else in my firm, an Internet
software company called TripleHop Technologies, I
survived without injury. Much of that was due to luck
and an organized evacuation effort. I was in my office
on the south side of the 53rd floor of WTC 1 (the
first tower to be hit and the second tower to
collapse) when the first plane hit. I was the only
one in my office when the plane hit around 8:50am -
many of my co-workers usually arrive around 9-9:15am,
thank God.

I was checking my e-mail when the first explosion hit
my building, although I was unsure whether it was my
building or the other tower at the time. There was
swaying for about ten seconds - during the first
couple of sways I was convinced we'd topple in the
Hudson River far below - and then I looked out the
window and saw documents and papers floating down from
the sky. I collected my wallet and Sharp organizer and
keys and went outside. Some other people in the
corridor initially thought there was a bomb in a
freight elevator so we all took the stairwell located
away from the freight elevator doors.

It took about 30-35 minutes to walk down the 53
flights of stairs in that stairwell. There were a lot
of people walking down with me but noone was
panicking. The Port Authority did a superb job of
organizing a well-executed evacuation that saved
thousands of lives, mine included.

Some people were making cell phone calls to people
outside the building and found out that a plane had
crashed into our building, but then other people said
a plane had crashed into the other building, so we
were confused which building had been hit - only after
exiting the towers did I look up and see that both
towers had been hit. In the stairwell, we assumed it
was a small plane, perhaps a Cessna. You could see
that everyone was frightened and wanted to get out but
noone lost control of themselves. A couple of times in
the stairwell, we had to move to the right to let burn
victims walk down quicker for treatment, or let
firefighters with their heavy equipment trudge up.

The mood definitely improved as we descended - on the
53rd floor, there was a strong smell of what seemed
like kerosene as well as some smoke, but as we
descended the smell and the smoke disappeared. The
sight of the three or four groups of firefighters
around the 30th or 40th floors certainly reassured
everybody as well. It was a bit hot so I took off my
dress shirt and was in a T-shirt and khakis. The woman
behind me, whom I recognized as an employee from the
Bank of China (their office is next to ours on the
53rd floor) - was clutching pictures of her kids and
her husband, I guess it crossed my mind at that point
that she had thought ahead of me to remove valuables
but I still figured I could return later and pick up
some important office equipment and documents, as well
as my favorite CDs and some concert tickets for a
group called Coldplay who will be in New York this
Sunday. Of course I don't care about retrieving that
stuff now.

People passed paper napkins around to help prevent
smoke inhalation, although the smoke was not that bad
especially in the lower floors. I helped a couple of
ladies down the stairs. One was a woman whose 30th
birthday is tomorrow (Friday) and she was worried she
wouldn't be able to celebrate her birthday. I helped
her calm down by hugging her and holding her as we
walked down the final 13 stories. The lights were on
in the stairwell the entire way until the final 5
stories. The sprinkler system was on the last five
stories, creating a waterfall down the stairs and a
river in the concourse level of the WTC and in the
shopping mall underneath that was the final leg of the
evacuation. It was strange to see the Gap, Banana
Republic, and America's Best Coffee dark and locked.

I saw several shocking scenes, but nothing comparable
to the current horror, since I left the scene before
either tower collapsed. The three or four burn victims
whom I saw descending the stairwell had bad burns to
their faces and arms, one or two of them had clothing
burned off, but they were able to walk down
unassisted. I pray that they are doing fine right now.
I caught a brief glimpse of the courtyard / fountain
area between the two towers and I was shocked at the
significant amount of burning wreckage I saw. I was
also aghast at the number of windows that had been
shattered or punctured with debris, leaving
bullet-like marks. I did not see any body parts or
people jumping. If we had known that was happening
while we were trapped in the stairwell, I don't know
what we evacuees' moods' would have been like.

We were evacuated onto Church Street near the Borders
bookstore. I left the woman about to celebrate her
30th birthday with some of her co-workers whom she
joyously found on the corner of Church and Fulton. I
walked one block up Fulton to Broadway and there was
greeted with an incredibly unexpected hug - from
Jason, my younger brother. Can you believe this? Out
of all the people being evacuated, he had somehow
found me. He told me later that he had seen the first
plane hit my tower while exiting his subway station on
the way to work. His work is 30 minutes walk away from
the Towers. He ran/walked all the way to the towers,
noting as he neared that some people's pants and shoes
were damp. He surmised correctly that the sprinkler
systems were automatically turned on and these people
were evacuees. he followed this train of evacuees to
the point where we all exited, and waited until I came
out. We hugged each other and couldn't believe we were
both OK. At that point I turned around and for the
first time saw those two awful burning holes in the
twin towers.

We decided to leave quickly, back to Jason's office to
make phone calls to my parents and e-mails/calls to
friends. I noticed several people who worked on my
floor milling around as we passed the Brooklyn Bridge
and nodded in sympathy.

It was impossible to use a cellular phone in the
vicinity of the towers since lines were jammed, and
pay phones had a very long wait as well. So we walked
through Chinatown and as we neared Jason's office 30
minutes after we left the evacuation scene, we turned
around in response to passers-by increased excitement
and chatter and witnessed the collapse of Tower 2.
Couldn't believe it. My first thought was of the
firefighters and rescue personnel who had been inside.
We got to his office and after a couple of jammed
lines, I got through to my mother and was on the phone
with her when the second tower (my tower) fell. I
spent the rest of the morning and most of the
afternoon sending e-mails / calling family and
friends, before returning to my apartment in Brooklyn.

I'm writing this e-mail not for my own personal
glorification, but so that everybody, especially those
located outside of New York, can get a sense that
there were a lot of people, possibly thousands of
people, who were succesfully evacuated before either
tower fell. There is hope for relatives and friends
who have not found their loved ones yet.

Today article that was written by New York-based AP
reporter and my college roommate Mike Luo. Mike did a
wonderful job interviewing me and writing an
optimistic story that perhaps can restore some sort of
hope and inspiration for those following the latest
developments in this tragic chain of incidents. I'd
paste the Web link and the story in this e-mail
directly, except that my home computer does not
support the "cut and paste" command - apologies to
all.

Unexpectedly to me, Mike's article was almost
instantaneously picked up by many large newspapers -
snippets of my interview are evidently featured on
news sources from the L.A. Times and theWire.org to
the A.P., USA Today, the BBC, and AOL. Starting
Tuesday night, other media outlets started bombarding
my home phone, my two roommates, and my answering
machine with messages. It's quite interesting and
disturbing and disorienting all at once.

At last count, I have been in touch with ten media
sources about my story - in rough chronological order:

1) the AP (two reporters, Mike Luo and Chris
Sullivan);
2) the New York Times;
3) Good Morning America on ABC;
4) CNN;
5) MSNBC with Brian Williams;
6) the Ananda Lewis Show;
7) 48 hours on CBS;
8) Court TV;
9) ITN from the UK;
10)USA Today.

I rejected appearances on the Ananda Lewis Show
because I was wary of the talk show circuit, Good
Morning America because of timing (they wanted me to
appear Wed morning at 5am and I was exhausted from
Tuesday's ordeal) and on MSNBC Wed night because I was
frightened of a bomb scare in the Empire State
Building (near the NBC studio) around the time they
wanted me to speak with Mr. Williams. I taped a live
segment with Catherine Crier on Court TV this
(Thursday) afternoon, and at this moment have
scheduled tapings with both 48 Hours and ITN for
tomorrow (Friday). This afternoon, I had a long phone
interview with a USA Today reporter for a story to
appear in Monday's edition. My meeting times with CNN
and the New York Times are still unresolved.

Well, that's my story not quite in a nutshell. Thanks
so much again for all your support and concern through
these tough times. It's great to know that you are a
friend in need (indeed!) Please feel free to e-mail me
back or call me at XXX-XXX-XXXX, but if you would like
to contribute more fully to the ongoing rescue and
clean-up efforts, you might want to donate blood (O-
or O+ are the most in demand) or donate supplies to
those who are truly in need.

Love and regards and speak soon, Kenton

<text>Hi Rach. I have had trouble getting through on email, but I just wanted to reassure you that I am ok, as are Judy and Erin and
all of our friends in the city. It has been very traumatic for us all, but thank the universe, we are all safe and unharmed. It was
all too close to home, as Judes and I saw the second plane hit the second WTC tower while crossing a bridge on the F-train -- a
man screamed and we all rushed to the window -- it was unreal and unimaginable what events would follow. I made it into
work, where I am 15 blocks directly north of the WTC and had a clear view of both towers. What broke my heart was seeing
the towers crumble to the ground. I have never been so shocked in my life. But has been extraordinarily comforting to be here
in New York, where strangers suddenly seem like long lost friends, and the collective experience is one of unity and support.
As I walked across the Williamsburg Brigde on Tuesday morning, like a r fugee among thousands of New Yorkers -- of all
shapes, colors and sizes -- I felt the most pride I have ever felt to be an American and to now be a New Yorker. And that's
the one thing that I think is keeping me going.

I hope you are well and that all your friends and family are safe.

Love, Em

> From: "Mike Daisey"

> Sent: Tuesday, September 11, 2001 3:25 PM
> Subject: 9/11/01, pt 2
>
>
>
> I am writing this from my home in Brooklyn after
> leaving Manhattan. I have
> signed up for a time slot to give blood later this
> evening and have a few
> hours available before then.
>
> After my last posting I made my way east through an
> urban
> moonscape--everywhere there is ash, abandoned bags
> in the street, people
> looking lost. I managed to get a cell line out to
> Jean-Michele, who is still
> in Seattle, and she helped me navigate with online
> maps as I plotted my exit
> strategy.
>
> Bizarrely, I caught a taxi crosstown. I was standing
> at a corner, I©m not
> even certain where, and a taxi was sitting there. A
> very pushy woman, whom I
> will always be thankful for, barged her way into the
> cab. In a moment,
> without thinking, I climbed in too. The driver, a
> Pakistani guy who had an
> improbable smile, immediately took off.
>
> The ash blocks out the sun downtown--it©s like
> driving in an impossible
> midnight, and even more impossible that I©m in a
> cab, with this woman who
> won©t stop trying her cell phone and another man, my
> age, who looks like
> he©s been crying. Maybe he just has ash in his eyes.
> I know I do--I feel
> like I will never see properly again, though that©s
> probably just trauma. I
> don©t even know where the driver is going. The
> crying man got someone on
> *his* cell phone, starts explaining what he©s seeing
> out the window. It©s
> like having a narrator traveling with us--I only
> notice the things that he
> is describing as he describes them.
>
> God bless that taxi driver--we never paid him. He
> let us all off, and I
> think he got out as well, near the Brooklyn Bridge.
> There are cops
> everywhere, people are herding themselves quite
> calmly, mutely, onto the
> bridge. We all walk across the Brooklyn Bridge,
> which is unbelievably
> beautiful, the wires and stone of the bridge
> surrounding us and the bright
> sun ahead, passing out of darkness.
>
> No one is talking to each other, but there is a
> sense of warmth. Everyone
> has their cell phones out, fishing for a clear
> signal. Those who catch them
> talk hurriedly to families, friends, people in other
> cities, children in
> their homes. It is comforting to hear their voices,
> telling how they are
> okay, shhh, it's okay, I©m okay. As we walk out into
> the sunlight, I am so
> happy to be in this company, the company of people
> who are alright, those
> who walked out.
>
> I was in the city today to turn in some of my book,
> I had stayed up all
> night writing and I was so worried--is it ready,
> have I done my work? Those
> questions seem small today--not unimportant, but
> smaller, in a new
> proportion. I kept thinking of how much I have left
> to do in my life, so
> many things that are undone, people I haven©t spoken
> to in years. It's
> overwhelming to feel everyone around me thinking the
> same thing, the
> restless thoughts trickling over this bridge as we
> come back to Brooklyn.
>
> From the Promenade I stand with hundreds of others,
> listening to radios,
> watching the plumes of smoke and the empty holes in
> the skyline. People
> stand there for a long time, talk to one another in
> hushed tones. Someone
> hands out a flier for a vigil this evening, which I
> will go to after I give
> blood.
>
> What can be said? Just this: we will emphasize the
> horror and the evil, and
> that is all true. It is not the entire story. I saw
> an old man with
> breathing problems and two black kids in baggy pants
> and ghetto gear rubbing
> his back, talking to him. No one was rioting or
> looting. People helped each
> other in small and tremendous ways all day longSa
> family was giving away
> sandwiches at the Promenade. Everyone I talked to
> agreed to go give blood.
> If a draft had been held to train people to be
> firefighters there would have
> been fights to see who got to volunteer.
>
> No matter how wide and intricate this act of evil
> may be it pales in
> comparison to the quiet dignity and strength of
> regular people. I have never
> been more proud of my country.

She is still in shock, but is relaxing at home after this horrible ordeal. Thank you all for your concern.

Good morning - and it's got to be a better morning than yesterday at this time.

Megan's mother was at work in the disaster area and Denise's sister, in the WTC -- both are safe. The three of us trudged up 8th Aves w/ laptops, not stopping to rest until we had passed the Post Office, Penn Station, Port Authority -- at the time, there was still uncertainty about how many unidentified planes were in the air. Phila closed down -- two of my sons were at work there, and reported much consternation about their being the next target. Jean Aspen, having worked on the 27th flr of the WTC, was concerned about friends -- nearly everyone had someone in their prayers. Hope your friends/family escaped harm.
