<text>> That's what the Big Apple has become.
>
> I am writing this email to let those who I have yet to
> verbally contact: I am alive, and well (other than a
> slight cough). As for the others in my midst:
>
> Those who are definitely safe:
> Allen Luu
> Chuck Nwoke
> Minna Kao
> Robert McKeithen
> Carolyn Quintana and Jon (her beau)
>
> Those that I'm not yet sure of:
> Erik Hsu
> Lisa Lin
> **If anyone has heard from these two, please let me
> know.
>
> My cellular phone was barely of use before the one
> decent cell tower toppled to the Manhattan street-top
> (it sat upon the World Trade Center Tower 1, the first
> to be hit, second to fall), now it has become a
> paperweight. So, many of you have yet to speak with
> me. I'm writing an email instead.
>
> I was nowhere near the towers as they were attacked.
> I just finished up my packing, preparing to catch my
> noon flight out of La Guardia Airport. I was making
> myself a nice, health-free egg, cheese, and raspberry
> jam sandwich as the news was announced.
>
> For those of you unfamiliar with where I've been
> staying: Greenpoint, Brooklyn (Northern Brooklyn).
> Greenpoint is too far from the Financial District of
> Manhattan for me to hear any of the explosions. I
> watched the live film of the first hit: Tower 1 was
> on fire, when another plane appeared out of the corner
> of the screen. The newscasters became hysteric, and I
> had the misfortune of viewing the second hit on live
> TV. "Surreal" is a useless word to describe how it
> felt to watch that. Confused, shocked, confused,
> distressed, confused, angry, confused, doubting,
> confused as hell. While "WHAT THE FUCK??!!!" is not a
> proper, or acceptable way to describe a feeling, it
> fits best.
>
> >From there I ran outside to the Pulaski Bridge (a
> bridge between Northern Brooklyn and Queens, just
> across the east river from midtown Manhattan) to see
> if this was really happening.
>
> The view was fabulous. What I was viewing was not.
>
> The smoke from the fires stretched for miles. The
> bridge was packed with honking cars, and cursing or
> crying people. Strangers were hugging and praying, if
> they weren't too busy listening to radios.
>
> After a few minutes, the mood of the crowd seemed to
> be turning a bit nasty. The traffic was thick,
> cellular phones weren't working, news was coming in
> that other strategic locations were under siege... it
> was an emotional pressure cooker. On top of all that,
> there were very few police on the bridge. It felt
> like the beginning of Bedlam. I left out of
> discomfort.
>
> As soon as I returned to the house, reports came in
> that a third plane was in route for another Manhattan
> landing. I ran like hell back to the bridge to see if
> this was true. I don't know if another plane was
> indeed on its way, but upon reaching my viewing spot,
> there was a muffled BOOM and Tower 2 crumbled to the
> ground like a kicked sand castle. People began
> crying, praying, screaming, grabbing the chain-link
> fence that lined the bridge, and running around like
> lunatics. Cars were flying down the only open lane on
> the three lane bridge, honking and careening as if
> suicidal. The sound of sirens, in every direction.
>
> About 15 minutes after that, Tower 1 dropped in much
> the same manner as its "twin". Most of us just sat
> there, staring at rising clouds of dust which
> ruthlessly pushed north from ground zero. The
> insanity ended. Everyone tried to comprehend that the
> World Trade Center had instantly become nothing but a
> memory, right in front of our eyes. The only noise
> was the continued sound of sirens. Everyone slowly
> dispersed. I walked home, looking only at the ground.
> I didn't want to cry. I didn't want to see anyone
> else cry.
>
> We don't have cable, so we only watch the local CBS
> station. They constantly talk about how well the city
> is pulling together to get through this. They aren't
> kidding. Based on my previous experiences here, that
> bridge should have erupted in raw violence. Instead,
> everyone prayed for each other's loved ones, asked
> where they could go to donate blood, and discussed the
> ramifications this event will have on US relations,
> worldwide. For once, I was impressed with the
> intellectual side, and capacity for compassion shown
> by New Yorkers.
>
> The Polish inhabitants of my neighborhood are in "WAR
> MODE". The neighborhood is pitch-black. Not a single
> light was on after 9:30pm. Quiet... Our neighborhood
> is playing nightime hide-and-go-seek with terrorists,
> holding our breath and remaining perfectly still, so
> as to not give away our position. I suppose they are
> worried about another air attack. I don't blame them.
> But I'm more worried about the potential for certain
> elements in this city to take advantage of the fact
> that most authorities have their attentions on
> Manhattan, leaving the outer borroughs vulnerable.
> This city was built, maintained, and will proceed
> through the acts of opportunists.
>
> If Brooklyn survives itself the next two nights, along
> with the possibility of subsequent attacks, I'll be
> thoroughly impressed by the strength of those living
> in New York on September 11, 2001.
>
> The only memories of this that I would like to purge
> are those of the desperate souls who found it more
> fitting to plummet 100 stories to the pavement rather
> than succumb to the inferno. It was reported that
> some were jumping in pairs, man and woman, holding
> hands, all the way down. I hope CNN chose to leave
> that footage out of their reports. It will visit me
> in my dreams, to be sure.
>
> I'll be back in Austin, soon. I'm just glad I booked
> a flight for noon out of La Guardia today, instead of
> earlier out of Newark.

              <text>

"I don't want to alarm anyone, but I just heard a, a boom here at the Pentagon."

<text>Hi, I am so glad you guys are ok!!! I have been not too good during the last
days. I turned on my tv by chance short after the second plane crashed into the
tower, and I couldn´t believe it!! I was really worried cause my best friend,
Jesse Smith, I don´t know if you know her, is at college in NYC. We just went
down there three weeks ago to get her settled in her room, so I just saw the
twin towers!! She goes to school on Long Island so I hoped she was there when it
happened. I called her and her roommate told me she was at her classes, so I was
really happy. But then I suddenly thought about my host sister, cause she is in
NYC, too and she is doing street ministry and feeding the homeless and all that
kind of stuff from her bible school. I knew she could be anywhere, cause they are
always all over the city, so I started to panic!! I called my mom(hostmom) and
she was panicking, too cause she had just heard what happened. I hung up with
her, so that she could try and get a hold of Kelly (my sis), and I called my
best friend here, and watched the news. It was so horrible, we saw the two
towers crash down, life on tv. I was totally beside myself, and so I called my
dad at work, cause I was home alone and I couldn´t stand that. He was in a
really important meeting, and he didn´t know what happened yet. He tried to calm
me down and was glad that I called. My two best friends in Germany came over
later on to keep me company and we watched the news all the time. After a few
hours I finally got a hold of my mom again, and she told me that Kelly was ok,
but very scared. She was supposed to work at a church that day, but luckily they
canceled it the day before, cause that church was totally destroyed when the
towers came down!! I know that was God who made them change the schedule the day
before!!!!
So I was a lot better after I heard from mom!! I stayed up until 2:30am(your
time 8:30pm), to see Bush´s speech. Then I finally went to bed. I was really
tired in school the next morning!!! But now I will tell you what people are
saying here in Germany. EVERYBODY is totally shocked and scared, no one ever
thought of that!!!Everyone was watching the news all the time. They only showed
news on tv and no commercial at all. They had huge extra services at churches in
all parts of the country and it was packed everywhere. People layed down flowers
in front of the American Embassy, and all flags were hanging on half( I dont
know how to say that). In our school we had the American flag up with a black
banner on the side, and yesterday at 10 am all Germany ahd a moment (2-5minutes)
of silence to honor the people in America. they had it all over the country. The
cars stopped in the streets, the factories stopped their machines, the radio was
silent, it was awesome!!!I was in school, so I didnt realize that all the cars
stopped and the people were stopping everything they were doing. I saw it in the
news at night and it was really moving, so I cried, again!! I talked to mom and
Jesse again two days ago, for like two hours, and they were doing ok.
Today we had a moment of silence in all Europe at noon. Everybody here is
thinking of America, and no one can understand how someone can do such a
horrible thing!!
Right now I am a little scared about a possible war, but I am praying that they
will find a way to solve this with no more deaths of innocent people!!
I thank you so much that you wrote!!!!!
Are you still flying to Dallas??
Congratulations to your baby by the way, I am so glad that you guys are happy
with her!! My host sister has a baby, too, she is 6 1/2 months and the cutest
kid, I loved babysitting her a few times while I was there for the summer!! I
was there when she siad her first words : MAMA!!! and now she says even more,
like: BABA,DADA,GHHH,..... Babies are so fun!!
oh, here is my address by the way:

<text>Well, everyone has their own story about today's tragic events. My story
isn't personally horrifying, but I thought I'd share it anyway.

For starters, thanks to those who have called or emailed inquiring as to
Cathleen and my safety. We are fine. As for those who haven't called or
emailed, we have long questioned your love for us and are now cutting you
from our holiday card list. Shucks, not really.

So, today started innocently enough. Woke up. Voted in the primary
election. Took the subway up to the Bronx to work. When I arrived at my
office, the security guard outside my office asked me if I had heard about
the plane that had crashed into the World Trade Center. I had not, and
quickly went upstairs to find out more information. But we don't have
televisions at Bronx AIDS Services, our phones were down for the day
(coincidence), and our pathetically slow internet server wasn't allowing me
to access any websites. We listened to the radio and heard the terrible
facts trickle in.

My brother emailed me, and through him I was able to get out info to
Cathleen and my mom that I was, indeed, in the Bronx and miles from danger.
As luck would have it, the one place you want to be when terrorists strike
is in the middle of urban blight, cause there's nothing there to strike.

Sitting around in my office, hearing about each new attack, I became
concerned that Cathleen might be at risk. We live a stone's throw from the
Empire State Building, which seemed like another likely target. Given my
limited access to news and my lack of phone contact, I permitted my mind to
wander this way for a couple of minutes before relaxing. But then after
listening to our not-so-quick legal secretary ask questions like "what's the
pentagon?" and "why would they attack us? We're not at war with Iraq," I
decided that it was time for me to go home. I knew that Manhattan had been
sealed off, but I figured that if I could get close enough to a bridge, it
was likely that I could walk across it and hoof it the rest of the way home.

I walked a few blocks over to Bronx AIDS Services' other office and picked
up my coworkers, Jen and Avalena, for the trip. At the other office, I
managed to call Cathleen. She and her brother Sam were planning on heading
up to the Citicorp building to give blood. Jen, Avalena and I tried for
about 20 minutes to catch a bus, but they were few and far between, and
those that came by were packed. So we finally hailed a livery cab and asked
him to take us as close as possible to the Third Avenue Bridge.

As we drove downtown through the Bronx, we passed by the Cross Bronx
Expressway which, although never known for its free-flow, was at a complete
standstill. Eighteen-wheelers had pulled off of the expressway and were
lining the nearby streets with no place to go. We finally made it to 138th
Street and Willis Avenue, at which point the streets were sealed off. We
got out of the car and walked about four or five blocks to the Willis Avenue
Bridge. By now, we could clearly see the pillar of smoke that was billowing
up into the otherwise pristinely-clear sky.

A steady stream of people were crossing the bridge, but in the opposite
direction. They were all leaving Manhattan, and we were heading in. It
felt weird, and stupid, to be walking against the flow of the mob.

We entered Manhattan at 125th Street and walked down 1st Avenue. All of the
sidewalks were crowded with people -- everywhere it seemed like 5th Avenue
during Christmas. At the same time, the streets themselves were almost
empty, save for the occasional emergency vehicle that would drive by. Every
once in a while an air force jet fighter would fly by overhead, a sight
we're not used to seeing in the big city. At 118th street I heard an
elderly man exclaim to another, "you know whose fault this is? The Jews!"

I was not really dressed for the long walk home. I chose the wrong day to
wear black cotton pants, and I was trekking in my dress shoes. My feet were
already a little tired and sore from a weekend of playing ultimate, and from
my having spent two hours last night campaigning in Harlem for my friend
Mark Levine (HC '91) who is running for City Council.

Given the state of my feet, I was excited to see an operational bus at 97th
Street and 2nd Avenue. We boarded the bus, but it was packed and Jen and I
had to stand in the stairwell in the front (Avalena departed to head to the
west side). We traveled in the bus for 30 blocks, but at each stop new
people were cramming on and I literally felt that my physical well-being was
being compromised, so we got off at 67th Street. Jen departed at 60th to
cross the Queensborough Bridge, hoping to catch a bus in Queens home into
Brooklyn, while I kept hiking downtown.

After a more than three and a half mile walk, I finally made it home and
began watching the horrifying images on television. We can lean out of our
living room and see the pillar of smoke where the twin towers once stood.
It is surreal.

Cathleen was unable to give blood, as the lines were (to New York's credit)
incredibly long. They were only taking blood from universal donors (O-neg),
and they could only do 20 people in an hour. She was walking the dogs when
disaster struck. She thought she heard an airplane roaring overhead,
remarkably close by, but didn't think much more of it. When she returned to
the apartment building, our doorman informed her that the World Trade Center
had been hit.

So we're hanging out now, watching the news with the rest of the world.
Sirens continue to wail, at intervals, in the background. As I write this,
7 World Trade Center collapsed. It is no easier to relate to the tragedy
here than it is to wherever you are now. Cathleen and I are pretty sure
that we don't know anyone who works in the World Trade Center, except for
our former landlord, Nori Ishikawa, and I am hoping that he is safe.

until later,

Rob,

Wow...this has been an absolutely devastating week. I
appreciate your e-mail. Fortunately, I was in Kosovo.
It's amazing and ironic -- I was safer in the Balkans
than in Washington, DC.

The U.S. compound here is on full alert. Soldiers
with huge guns are patrolling. We're locked down and
cannot go anywhere. It's been so upsetting.

Rob, I've been a wreck. These events have devastated
me. I have so many friends and colleagues who work at
the Pentagon. I have so many close friends --
including you! -- who live in NYC. The last 48 hours
have been unbearable.

I'm glad to hear you are well. I'm very interested in
hearing your story. Where were you yesterday? What
did you seee?

You were one of the first people I thought of when I
saw the disaster unfolding. You're in my thoughts.

Lots of love,
Joshua

Can't remember if I sent you the following:
I've just talked to people on the streets, that have just walked from lower Manhattan.
The're in shock, of course, the're crying, the're angry and they want revenge.. They talk of thousands of dead and injured. The hospitals are running out of blood.
War ships have entered the harbour.
It' a beautiful sunny day.
Were all stunned.
More when it happens.
Love,
r.
ps- I'll keep you updated with any personal reports.
I've just come from the roof, where shocked people can't believe the new skyline.
My eyes are stinging and everyone here is hoping that the terrorists didn't have chemical or biological weapons

At the time I e-mailed you yesterday I knew nothing of the horror that was
unfolding in the US. I got Ronda back to my place at 08.30am your time and
she was asleep before the first explosion at 08.58. I was in a meeting all
afternoon and the first I knew about it was on my car radio at 12 noon
your time/5pm here.

I had said that I would let Ronda sleep off her jetlag until dinnertime,
but I felt I had to waken her when I got home. You can imagine how shocked
she was and there were several phone calls from her to her family ( in fact
we couldn't even get a transatlantic phone line until 5pm/10pm ). Her mom
was so happy and relieved that Ronda had gotten away from the country
before all air traffic ceased.

Ronda asks me to tell you and Christine that she is well, but obviously
shaken. She and my girlfriend and myself just sat last night in silence and
watched all the news channels until the wee small hours.

May I take this opportunity on behalf of all my academic colleagues to
express to you all our revulsion and our heartfelt sympathies for the
collective trauma that you must all be experiencing at this time. We in
Northern Ireland have known our own sorrows but not on the scale you have
just endured.

We are thinking about all of you

We were evacuated 2x from our building, 2nd time they said we won't be able
to get back in until tommorrow morning. (some jerk called in a threat to our
building) many buildings in Newark were closed

Waited in Newark for a few hours to let traffic ease up, was backed up for a
while.

              <text>Hi All,

The past 4 days have felt like weeks. It is friday, and normally I would be celebrating the weekend, but today I sit and wonder what the weekend will bring for new york and america.

I got to work at 8:30 Tuesday morning, and started to turn on my computer when someone screamed out, "oh my god, a plane just hit the world trade center!" At first I thought it was an accident. The phones just started ringing off the hook. Now I look back and think how selfish that was because we were tying up the air ways for anyone who was trying to get out of the wtc and call their loved ones to say goodbye. After we heard that the second one hit, we all piled around a window in disbelief. There were 2 huge holes with smoke piling out. I really felt like I was watching a really bad movie. We watched the rest of the events happen out the window. One woman I work with had a sister working there, she couldn't get ahold of her. She couldn't even speak, just frantically crying. Another woman's husband works for the FBI and he was there right after the first plane hit. He luckily made it out alive, but she has not been able to see him. A few other people couldn't even walk. Virtually everyone I know knew someone that at least worked in the area.

I work on 34th St, midtown. If you see pictures of the city I am right down the block from the empire state building. The city basically shut down. All tunnels, bridges, trains, etc, all closed. Macy's told us that if we wanted to leave we could but we would not be allowed back in. I had no where to go, so we just stayed put because I did not want to leave alone. I finally got ahold of my boyfriend patrick, which was not easy because all phone lines were tied. he was at someone's apt uptown, so I treked up there to meet him. We heard they were running the ferry to hoboken, so we left to try to get home and out of the city.

Normally there are mass people fighting and pushing their way to get home, but here it was a calm, somber crowd. the ferry line was 15 blocks long, but no one complained. as we rode the ferry, no one spoke, and everyone just stared in disbelief at the sight. Smoke was just billowing out. When we got across to hoboken, it looked like a war camp had been set up. everyone going anywhere in new jersey had to go to hoboken first, then take a bus or train. they made an announcement that everyone within a 10 block raidius of the WTC had to go thru detox, and everyone else had to wait. Then they made an announcement that everyone had to go thru detox. No one questioned why. We got off the ferry and then had to be sprayd by fire hoses to get any and all asbestos or other materials off of us. Work clothes, bags, purses, brief cases, every single person was sprayed. Then I had to walk 14 blocks home, soaking wet. But I had nothing to complain about.

The next morning, I woke up hoping everything would have just been a bad dream. I walked down to the park in which there was still a very black cloud over the city. I did not go to work. Everyone was quiet and you knew there was no one out that day that was not thinking about it. Most of the day yesterday was spent glued to the TV. It's weird because other tragedies happen in our country, but we are able to go on with our lives. How do you do that when it is right here in your backyard. And as time goes on, you hear in person more and more stories of what happened. And people also find out that people they know worked there and are missing. Patrick has found out that 2 friends of his and one of his cliets are gone.
I went to work yesterday with much trepidation. The tunnels were reopened, but very empty. Every truck going thru the tunnel was stopped and searched. Once, the tunnel stopped, and everyone begins to wonder why....even though stops in the tunnel are so normal. Walking down the street in new york, you could have walked in the middle of the road, for no one was driving. So I go to work, and try to get something done. Entirely impossible. Macy's was ordered by the mayor to please stay open, for some place for stranded tourists and others to go. Security was everywhere in our building, including bomb dogs. About 11am, I got a call from a coworker who had gone down to the sales floor. He said, "Steph I don't know what's going on, but everyone's evacuating down here." I started to tell people and then 2 men came running around, "GET OUT GET OUT GET OUT RIGHT NOW!" I didn't even question it, I was out the door. i ran down 18 flights of stairs, and I'm telling you, that was HARD. I was pannicked and shaking. I cannot imagine 100 or more flights. It turned out it was a bomb scare, which apparently happened over 90 times over the city yesterday. It truly is a sick world if people are thinking about doing something like that.

Today, I tried to go back to work again. Not easy at all. So many people are angry, or sad or solemn. I'm still in shock, and I'm very sad, but I'm also very scared. I don't know if its over. Who knows how they'd strike next. Last night I woke up to a booming, first thought is oh my god there's a bomb. It turned out to be thunder. Patrick left his cell phone at my aparmtnet, I hunted him down this morning to give it to him because if anything happened I wouldn't want him to be unable to call someone. i hear a siren go off and I jump. anyone says in my office," oh my god." i jump.

But i'm sad too. The woman who couldn't get ahold of her sister had to search hospital after hospital in new york to find her. she's okay. patrick lost 3 people he knows, possibly more. my best friend jen's dad was in that building, but got out safely. now he's out of a job for now. at jen's work, 2 co workers were on that flight. today we went through sample closets at work and pulled out pillows and blankets and comforters to give to the rescuemen who might need them to rest at the site. It made me feel good but so sad at the same time. I see people walking down the street crying. I hear people tell their accounts. I thank god that I didn't get hurt nor did anyone I know directly. And I do. But I also see how sad and scared everyone is here in new york.

But I also see the spirit and hope that people have here. People are so wonderful and nice. I was at the dock and watched a complete stranger hug another because one was crying. I continue to see how many people are getting involved. Patrick tryed to volunteer, but was turned away because they had too many people. Everyone here is just banning together.

Tonight I am going to a prayer vigil at 7. Please everyone, keep saying prayers. For those that have lost their lives, for those that may still be alive. For those men and women who are so dedicated to the cause, that they have not rested since tuesday. for those that are alone stranded unable to hug someone they love. for those children who've lost a parent, for those who've lost a husband, wive, daughter, son, brother, sister, friend, or coworker. If you've ever imagined your worst nightmare, the worst movie you've ever seen, its here in new york. Its an awful scene to see. I can only thank god that I'm okay and so is everyone I personally know.

Thank you for everyone who had thought of me during this time. I appreciate all your emails and attempts to get in touch. I wanted you all to know i'm okay. Just like all of you are, I'm attempting to make sense of it all.

Love and peace to all of you.

Stephanie

Sad, but true.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

> This is very interesting, very enlightening.
>
> letter by Tamim Ansary, an Afghan-American woman
>
> Dear Friends,
>
> Yesterday I heard a lot of talk about "bombing
> Afghanistan back to the Stone Age." Ronn Owens, on
> KGO Talk Radio allowed that this would mean killing
> innocent people, people who had nothing to do with
> this atrocity, but "we're at war, we have to accept
> collateral damage," and he asked, "What else can we
> do? What is your suggestion?" Minutes later I heard
> a TV pundit discussing whether we "have the belly to
> do what must be done." And I thought about these issues
> especially hard because I am from Afghanistan, and
> even though I've lived here for 35 years I've never
> lost track of what's been going on over there. So I
> want to share a few thoughts with anyone who will
> listen.
>
> I speak as one who hates the Taliban and Osama Bin
> Laden. There is no doubt in my mind that these
> people were responsible for the atrocity in New York. I
> fervently wish to see those monsters punished. But
> the Taliban and Bin Laden are not Afghanistan. They're
> not even the government of Afghanistan. The Taliban are
> a cult of ignorant psychotics who captured Afghanistan
> in 1997 and have been holding the country in bondage
> ever since. Bin Laden is a political criminal with a
> master plan. When you think Taliban, think Nazis.
> When you think Bin Laden, think Hitler. And when you
> think "the people of Afghanistan" think "the Jews in the
> concentration camps." It's not only that the Afghan
> people had nothing to do with this atrocity. They
> were the first victims of the perpetrators. They would
> love for someone to eliminate the Taliban and clear out
> the rats nest of international thugs holed up in their
> country. I guarantee it. Some say, if that's the
> case, why don't the Afghans rise up and overthrow the
> Taliban themselves? The answer is, they're starved,
> exhausted, damaged, and incapacitated. A few years
> ago, the United Nations estimated that there are
> 500,000 disabled orphans in Afghanistan--a country
> with no economy, no food.
>
> Millions of Afghans are widows of the approximately
> two million men killed during the war with the
> Soviets. And the Taliban has been executing these
> women for being women and have buried some of their
> opponents alive in mass graves. The soil of
> Afghanistan is littered with land mines and almost
> all the farms have been destroyed. The Afghan people
> have tried to overthrow the Taliban. They haven't been
> able to.
>
> We come now to the question of bombing Afghanistan
> back to the Stone Age. Trouble with that scheme is,
> it's already been done. The Soviets took care of it
> .
> Make the Afghans suffer? They're already suffering.
> Level their houses? Done. Turn their schools into
> piles of rubble? Done. Eradicate their hospitals?
> Done. Destroy their infrastructure? There is no
> infrastructure. Cut them off from medicine and
> health care? Too late. Someone already did all that.
>
> New bombs would only land in the rubble of earlier
> bombs. Would they at least get the Taliban? Not
> likely. In today's Afghanistan, only the Taliban
> eat, only they have the means to move around. They'd slip
> away and hide. (They have already, I hear.) Maybe
> the bombs would get some of those disabled orphans, they
> don't move too fast, they don't even have
> wheelchairs. But flying over Kabul and dropping bombs wouldn't
> really be a strike against the criminals who did
> this horrific thing. Actually it would be making common
> cause with the Taliban--by raping once again the
> people they've been raping all this time.
>
> So what else can be done, then? Let me now speak
> with true fear and trembling. The only way to get Bin
> Laden is to go in there with ground troops. I think that
> when people speak of "having the belly to do what
> needs to be done" many of them are thinking in terms
> of having the belly to kill as many as needed. They
> are thinking about overcoming moral qualms about
> killing innocent people. But it's the belly to die
> not kill that's actually on the table. Americans will
> die in a land war to get Bin Laden. And not just because
> some Americans would die fighting their way through
> Afghanistan to Bin Laden's hideout. It's much bigger
> than that, folks. To get any troops to Afghanistan,
> we'd have to go through Pakistan. Would they let us?
> Not likely. The conquest of Pakistan would have to
> be first. Will other Muslim nations just stand by? You
> see where I'm going. The invasion approach is a
> flirtation with global war between Islam and the
> West.
>
> And that is Bin Laden's program. That's exactly what
> he wants and why he did this thing. Read his
> speeches and statements. It's all right there. At the moment,
> of course, "Islam" as such does not exist. There are
> Muslims and there are Muslim countries, but no such
> political entity as Islam. Bin Laden believes that
> if he can get a war started, he can constitute this
> entity and he'd be running it. He really believes
> Islam would beat the west. It might seem ridiculous,
> but he figures if he can polarize the world into
> Islam and the West, he's got a billion soldiers. If the
> West wreaks a holocaust in Muslim lands, that's a billion
> people with nothing left to lose, even better from
> Bin Laden's point of view. He's probably wrong about
> winning, in the end the west would probably
> overcome--whatever that would mean in such a war;
> but the war would last for years and millions would die,
> not just theirs but ours. Who has the belly for
> that? Bin Laden yes, but anyone else?
>
> I don't have a solution. But I do believe that
> suffering and poverty are the soil in which
> terrorism grows. Bin Laden and his cohorts want to bait us
> into creating more such soil, so they and their kind can
> flourish. We can't let him do that. That's my humble
> opinion.

I don't have today's Court Calendar. Since this was fairly early in the morning, I'm not sure who would have been in the office. Stu Flamen has a long commute so chances are he was not in the office. I still haven't hear from Robert Fumo but he usually would come in later even if he had an office assignment. Brian McCaffrey will occasionally come in early, I know he had to catch up on some work. I'm most concerned about Delores Forbes as she may
have had difficulty walking down 28 floors and the stairways may have been blocked. I really don't know but just pray she's OK. This is so unbelievable
the office is just gone. Patricia and MaryAnn also sometimes come in early,I really don't know.

Joe had a trial in Brooklyn, he may have come in early to work on the trial I have no idea but the trial was in Brooklyn so hopefully he was not in the building. If I hear from anyone I will let you know. Its really so sad just can't stop from getting choked up. Please let me know if you hear from anyone as well.

>
> I am so glad to hear you are ok. Thanks for writing me. We've tried to
> call numerous time. Do you know what Attorney's would've been in the
> office today? Thanks.

> Tomiko,
>
> I'm OK. Not sure who would have been in our office but Dolores Forbes comes in early usually around 8:00 a.m. Patricia Gopaul also comes in early. I'm not sure of anyone else's schedule. Apparently our tower collapsed. Our office was on the 28th floor. Just wanted to let you know
> that I'm OK. Phone lines are down tried to call earlier.
>
> Please pray for anyone who might have been in our building.

              <text>Dear friends:
Sue is okay. I am okay. Oscar the cat is okay. Thank you for the pouring out of well wishes. For those not pouring out, I love you all. For those of you who did not realize, we lived? one block from the building formerly known as the World Trade Center, AKA Ground Zero.
	DAY 1
And the story begins like this-I left for work at 0745-I drive to work-the car was parked approximately 100 feet from the base of the South Tower where I typically park it on the street-All cars left in that location were blown up-I often go to my gym b/4 work but I was being a lazy shit that morning-the gym is in the World Trade Center Marriott Hotel-the same hotel Bergen and his posse stayed at for the 1999 Ohio State Go Bucs Kickoff Classic-that hotel is no more-Had I gone to the gym I would have been at that a/o until 0815-0825.
I did not learn of the tragedy until I got to work. I immediately called my wife to make sure she was okay. We all thought it was an accident at first. Sue was doing her hair at the time oblivious to the blast. After I got off the phone with her the second blast occurred and I did not speak to Sue for nearly two hours but it seemed like eternity. They evacuated our building. Sue tried to get OScar the fat cat but he would not come out from behind the couch so she was forced to leave the meow for himself.
Sue began walking north away from the towers before the collapse-thank god. A number of people we know stayed to watch and were injured (they are okay). Sue's friend Tammy from the wedding party worked on the 40th floor of the first tower but she was able to get out safely. Sue was forced to walk over 100 blocks to her friend on E. 74th Street. She of course stopped at her favorite store Kmart to purchase her favorite Kmart clothes sneakers and sweats to continue her million woman march (She was wearing a business suit).
I was trapped in the Bronx until night time because no subways were working and all bridges were closed to even foot traffic. Finally, I was able to subway down to where Sue was. I picked her up and we then went back to the Bronx and got my car and drove out of the city to Sue's parents in Rockland County.
	Day 2-Operation Oscar commences
I was on the move early morning. No unauthorized personnel was allowed below 14th Street so I attempted to contact some NYPD friends to see if I could get a ride into Ground Zero. They told me the area was too hazardous and that I should wait until tomorrow. I of course did not listen. I drove to the Bronx DA's office where I biked into Manhattan for the 15 mile trip downtown-I crossed the 155th Street Bridge and biked down the Henry Hudson Parkway (mostly because I thought it as a nice bike trail and I always wanted to do it)-I finally made it to the freeze zone at 14th Street where the police were not letting any unauthorized personnel through. Of course I tell them my name is CPT Smith and my reserve unit has just been activated and I must get to my apartment to get out my military gear. I flashed my ID and I was allowed behind the police barricades. I traveled several more minutes and I reached the area where the media could not go past still a 1/4 mile from the apartment. A swat team of police surrounded me I told them again I was trying to get my military. (Mind you I am wearing shorts and a tee-shirt). Some police Captain told me he basically did not give a sh__ who I was and that he had to have authorization from the command center. His mistake was to walk away from me b/c when he was not looking I went past the police barricade.
At this point I am 2-3 blocks from Ground Zero-I picked up a mask I found b/c the air was hard to breathe. The only people in this area were police and firefighters. I felt like Richard Dreyfus in Close Encounters. I got to an area one block from Ground Zero.
Words can not describe it. I actually began to cry thinking about all the bodies. It was like a nuclear winter. There was soot and debris strewn everywhere. I made it to my apt complex. There is a traffic circle in my complex which once had a beautiful garden. No more. Destroyed with smoke soot, garbage. I went to my building where I was stopped by the NAtl Guard but I explained my situation and I was in. I tried to go up the service stairs but there was no power and I foolishly forgot my flashlight. It was darkness like I have never seen before (an oxymoron). I went back down and got a flashlight from a man that happened to also be sneaking into the building.
I ran up the steps in to the apartment and yelled for the cat who had now been in the apartment for about 36 hours. I heard him behind the couch he would not come out. He clearly had not eaten at all or drank anything but I was happy he was okay-I fed him and calmed him down for about 10 minutes-At this point I put on my BDU's so I would not have any problem getting out of the area.
I put the cat in a mesh knapsack and left the apartment which has a significant amount of debris and damage. The cat was screaming for his life. I got outside and all of the NAtl guard troops started saluting me b/c I outranked them in my uniform and all the police that were giving me a hard time were now on my side. I made it back to where i left the bike and now for my favorite part of the story.
There was a crowed of people at the entrance to the freeze zone cheering for all the police and firefighters and NAtl Guard. The crowd was waving the American Flag and screaming. And here comes CPT Smith on his mother in laws bike ( no banana seat or basket) carrying the cat in my left arm and steering the bike with the other-And the crowd starts going nuts for me cheering and waving the flag. I continued the ride to 34th St. Penn Station where me the cat and the bike rode the subway back to the Bronx where we lived happily ever after. Operation Oscar complete.</text>

<text>It started off as any other day. I woke up and went to the gym. I then went over to my parents house and was watching the morning news with my mother when the 'breaking news' of the first plain crash came on. They had some footage of the first tower that had been hit and my mother and I watched in horror that such an awful accident could have occurred. We talked about how many people could have been hurt. Shortly after, I watched the second plain hit on national TV, and thats when we both realized that this wasnt an accident and someone had purposely hit those two buildings. I was in a state of shock right off the bat, because I couldnt believe that anyone could have committed such a grotesque act of evil. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I still was thinking that maybe it still was an accident, because no one could have been so sick as to do this.
I called my boyfriend at work to find out if he had heard what was going on yet. He said that he had, and was currently (like everyone else at his job) stopped everything and both eyes fixed unmovable on the television news broadcast. When first news of the possibility of terrorist was raised, I felt an overwhelming sense of devastation. How could anyone have done this? What have we done so bad to some other country that terrorist feel the need to threaten so many lives, so unmercifully.
My boyfriend got home from work as I set on the couch, still my eyes not leaving the screen. I updated my boyfriend on the latest news, of the estimated death toll, and we watched as people jumped from hundreds of feet in the air, figuring it a better idea to commit suicide by jumping than to burn to death in the blazing building. So many people were stuck in the top floors, I remember praying for them, and begging God not to make so many people suffer.
The entire day, I didnt leave my apartment, I just watched TV. That night, I didnt go to bed until late, I couldnt, I felt sick to my stomach. I just kept the news on and kept hoping that the emergency personnel saved more lives than were lost. I had no idea how serious the event was until I woke up the next day to flames still coming out of the towers. The fires still werent out. I felt an overwhelming sense of loss for all the people who may have lost loved ones in the tragedy.
The magnitude of the event didnt hit me until a couple of days later, when the fires still werent out and the death toll count began. It started off so small, a couple of hundred. Days later it began going into the thousands. I began getting depressed for all of the people who had been touched. My family even knew one person who died. The more I shared my grievances with my friends, the more I realized that almost everyone I knew had been personally affected somehow. Everyone knew someone who knew someone that had been killed. The magnitude of this event superceded any news that I had lived through in my lifetime.
Almost eight months later, it still hurts. And I didnt even get truly personally affected. I pray for the people who are still in such pain because they lost their father or wife or sister or child. Its a void that will never be filled, a senseless waste of so many professional lives and so many innocent souls. Those people got up for work and kissed their familys good-bye and went to do their job, not knowing that September 11, 2001 was the last day of their lives.
No one could say that anything good came out of these tragedies, but I believe that it brought me closer to my loved ones, and made me realize how quickly life can be taken away.

              <text>This is a Black Day.

Today, our freedom of life and freedom from fear were taken from us. Taken, as a result of hatred.

I am 37 years old and I've never faced these fears before. Oh, I certainly remember the Brezhnev/Nixon cold war days of the early 1970s, when we had practice drills in elementary school to prepare for nuclear attacks by crouching beneath our desks. "Duck and cover," remember? As I recall, though, it was fun. It was a drill. It would always be a drill. As far as I know, those drills have been abandoned from U.S. elementary schools for the last 25 years. After all, they were nothing but drills.... I wonder if Bobby and Billy will think that they're fun, too. And dear Trevor...on your 4th birthday...will you ever know the freedoms that I've known?

This was a Black Day.

Today, our confidence, pride, and sense of what will never be were indelibly changed. Changed, because of hatred.

Think about those words: "what will never be..."

now, think about these: "The World Trade Center is Gone."
                                                "The Pentagon has been attacked."
                                                "50,000 Americans are dead."

Our paradigms regarding free-world existence, as well as words that should never be spoken are forever changed.

This will always be a Black Day.

Freedom and paradigms; words and drills. So many things are different today. Different, because of hatred.

Did you notice the difference today, as I did? Did the sky feel a bit different? Were the flowers less fragrant? Was the wine a little less sweet? And did the tears burn more than usual?
      If so, you weren't alone.

I'm not giving up, and I'm certainly not giving in. I love and believe in God and my country. Whomever is responsible for this has not won. And regardless of how strong my spirit is, I'll sure miss the way I used to live. Because of hatred.

            God Bless. Don't hate.

I thought I would try to tell you what it's like from mid-Manhattan.

I used to be able to see the World Trade Towers from my window. As a
matter of fact, I saw the plane hit the second tower and the Tower
implode. I happened to be home that morning, something I don't ever do.
But I began working at home at 6 a.m. and sent my daughter off to school at
7:30. Just before 9 a.m. I received a phone call from a co-worker so I
put on the television and realized that I could see the Towers out of my
window. What you saw on television is what I saw from my window.

I saw the plane flying so low and I thought that maybe it had been
blinded by the smoke except that there didn't seem to be smoke on that
side of the Towers. But I also dismissed the idea of terrorism. And
then, it looked as if the building opened up to swallow the plane and
then the Tower burst into flames.I saw the Tower fall. It just got
swallowed by smoke. Like a grade B movie there were sirens constantly.
A---- tells of black smoke over all of City Hall Park with silver shards
shining throughout. What were they? Metal? Paper shreds? The sun was
shining through the smoke, making these things look shiny. Dust was
everywhere. People were walking without shoes having taken them off to
run down stairs as fast as they could. Glass was everywhere.

The smoke is less now. It looks as if there never were Towers. The
skyline looks normal. There isn't a shred of the buildings to be seen
from my viewpoint. The smoke was going towards Brooklyn yesterday and
people as far away as Coney Island report dust and those right over the
bridge had pieces of charred paper falling everywhere. The smoke was
black and blanketed everything to the east. By the end of the day, the
smoke has become almost all white until another building (#7) fell and
then the smoke became black again. This morning, the smoke was whiter
and moving towards New Jersey. Tonight, in the hole that was once the
World Trade Center, there is white smoke. This time it is lit up from
lights workers have put up in order to search for bodies and clean up
the rubble which is two-stories high. The problem is that the wind has
changed and the smoke is going north, and everyone up to 100th Street on
the West Side smells as if something is burning down the street. People
are wearing masks. My daughter can't sleep in her bedroom.

The hospital was obviously on alert the whole day yesterday, ready at
any moment for the ER to be overrun with the injured. The ER was
practically empty. Doctors weren't needed at all ERs. Very few
impromptu blood banks were erected. I know you have heard all sorts of
things about how many injured there were, but the injured were few. The
death toll is enormous. They are just beginning to say how many
tonight. There must be a blackout for news journalists but I have to
tell you that the stories of carnage, of body parts, is unbelievable.
Today, people are beginning to come in to the ER with dust in their
eyes.

The streets have been relatively empty of cars, and filled -- teaming
with -- people as they walk from place to place. Certain areas, such as
our hospital and the Red Cross are cordoned off by yellow policy tape.
The hospital ER street is blocked by sanitation trucks. Volunteers are
everywhere. So much clothing has been collected that it is going to the
homeless. People have offered their apartments. People are manning the
phones. Yesterday there was an unreal feeling, almost an excitement
from the activity and the togetherness. Today, nobody talks. Reality
is setting in. The air is thick with burning smells. It is a war
zone. It is unbelievably sad. The one thing that gives people heart is
the generousity of strangers banding together to help in any way they
can. People are hugging each other. Any problems that existed before
are so minute, that all of us are happy to be alive. We are so lucky.
Even Alan and I are getting along. We have a common horror, a new
perspective of what's important.

Nobody can get into the hospital without an ID. I saw a child of a
nurse. The child walked from Battery Park, right next door to the
Towers where his school is. He couldn't get into the hospital to tell
his mother he was okay. I went up to her floor to tell her. When I got
there, the entire staff collapsed in tears to find that he was okay. And
the child's father was walking down there to find him (he came back
safely). I do not know when these
children will be able to go back to school.

The firehouses are covered with flowers, and letters of love, and food.
The firefighters are old fashioned heroes, raising American flags on
their trucks, getting applause as they pass by.

The smoke is much less now. It seems to be going east again. The smell
of burning isn't so strong. Schools open tomorrow above 14th Street.
The hospital goes back to normal patient hours. Some subways are still
not working but buses are back in business. Some life goes on.

<text>The difference started to grip me with my first steps onto the NJ Transit. Like a boa suffocating its prey, slowly, systematically, terminally. Will I die today? Will someone I love die? How many times did I ask myself that in Hawaii? Zero, to be exact.
And you can see it weave its infected fabric into everyone's clouded head. And I mean every single one. If I go into Staples, will I die? If I take a subway to Penn Station, will I die? Will I die in Penn Station? If I drink tap water, will I die? Will I die if I run in Central Park? Or take a taxi or car home?
There are those that justify or rationalize this by empathizing with the every day fears rampant in the Middle East and other places. Twisted. Now we know how they feel? So what! We did not invite this guest into our lives, he barged in. We have nothing to gain from this but preservation. Why? For land? No. Money. Probably, but the hypocrits would not admit it. For power? Unclear how that would transpire. For fame? He had it. To kill just for the sake of killing? Apparently.
Make no mistake nor qualms, certain freedoms evaporated with those buildings. US liberty has been devirginized by a rapist so vile that he will happily repeat the act for his audience. But where, when, how? And will I die?
It is time to defend. And defend violently. We Americans must be willing to pursue victory at all costs, and to expend every possible resource in this pursuit. No mission has ever been more critical, nor, I believe, will prove to be more demanding. I am ready to board that train tomorrow, are you? I hope we all are so that we may provide for our children the blessing of unblemished freedom we all once bathed in...

We are all fine here. I spoke with Paula at her office and she had already spoken with Marissa. Patrick is in school and he called me using his cell phone, so he's OK. Marcus called from school (2 1/2 hours away) worried about us...so everyone is accounted for and safe.

I work underground in a secure facility on Fort Belvoir (was not in the Pentagon today), so there is very little threat to my safety. Still not sure at this time about the status of many of my friends who work in the Pentagon... but let's assume that all is well until we hear otherwise. From the TV video and still photos, it looks like they hit the "wedge" of the Pentagon that was recently renovated and where people were just moving back in... that would minimize the tragedy somewhat. The folks in NYC will not fare as well; that will be a tremendous loss of life.

The details of these terrorist attacks will take some time before all the details come out; there may be several entities responsible. The USA is so vulnerable to terrorism... this is a long-standing problem that we have not addressed in the past. My guess is that this president will take action once we know who is responsible... but I'm not sure if that will really matter to those families who lost a loved one today.

Just wanted you to know that we are all safe.

George

              <text>Hello all,

I was very glad I was able to e-mail you. They turned off the e-mail initially, but higher headquarters told them to turn it back on when tons of families back home called HQ Marine Corps and HQ Navy. We are under strict guidelines of what we can say though. I can tell you that I know no more than you do right now. Please tell everyone that I really appreciate the prayers. I am very glad to hear everyone there is okay. I will not take any unnecessary risks, so don't worry about it. I really think we're safer out here than back in the states. I am worried about your safety right now. I am praying this all ends soon. I will continue to update you as much as possible. I will able to e-mail you without standing in line very soon. I will let you know when that happens. It is scary but comforting at the same
time to see the coasts are being protected by Navy ships and Air Force jets. It is so unbelievable. It certainly does not seem real. I would have thought it would see more real being out here and all, but I think it has had the opposite effect. The videos they keep showing on TV (the on of the planes crashing and Manhattan looking like Beirut) seem like their trailers from a movie or something. I hear gas prices have skyrocketed too. Does it seem any more real to you there? I certainly know it is real, and it has hit me, but I'm just saying it is too crazy to fully comprehend. I was in a club/bar when the music stopped and it was announced that all Marines and sailors were directed to go back to the ships immediately. I initially thought one
of the service members did something really bad and the city was kicking us out, but them someone said the WTC and Pentagon were bombed. I felt like throwing up. There was chaos in the street at first. Too many were drunk. After a few minutes I along with several other NCOs calmed people down and we headed toward the piers in huge groups. Public busses stopped and drove us all down there for free. They searched every bag and carefully checked all ID cards when we got back on the ship. The ships left port shortly after. We saw the "act of war" on TV then, and people were stunned. We just as there all night watching. I don't know if anyone here slept that night. I shot a little video, but none of the melee in the streets. I will include that on the tape I'm preparing. The attitude of the crew and Marines here is indescribable. There are a lot of people from NYC here, and they are obviously very worried. Some haven't heard from their families yet. Everyone seems very, very mad. We got a special video from the Sec of Defense today telling us that all steps are being taken to protect us and our loved ones back home. I believe him. This message is getting very long, so I'm going to sign off now. We're all being very careful here. Please, do the same. I will e-mail you again soon. I love and miss all of you.

Love,
Joe</text>

> My god. Is everyone else in your circle okay?
> I can't believe you were going to go to the
> observation deck tonight! That's unbelievable.
> I can't tell you how awful it was to watch on tv. I
> guess I don't need to tell you. I'm so glad you're
> both okay. this is just insane.
>

> >
> > Hi Robert -
> >
> > We're both ok. I'm sixty blocks away & Jeffrey
> was
> > at home (closer but far
> > enough away). We're both in a bit of a shock.
> Its
> > hard to describe how
> > things are - insane is the best word. All
> > transportation is at a
> > standstill - subways closed, bridges and tunnels
> > closed, busses stopped
> > running & so people are walking everywhere & most
> of
> > them are in a daze.
> > It happened right at 9am (the first plane) and
> then
> > at 9:18 (the second
> > plane) & then the buldings crumbled about an hour
> > later.
> >
> > Ironic (total truth!!!) - Jeffrey and I were going
> > to go up to the
> > observation deck TONITE!!!! Anyway, there's a
> > serious sense of loss in the
> > air. I have to stay overnight here at the hotel.
> > Jeffrey is at Maddie's
> > apartment.
