Yes - everyone in our office got out - we heard the boom and vibration, but our evacuation siren never went off - I heard commotions and screaming in the hall so I open the door to our suite and looked out, everyone was running and I asked what's going on and no one answered so I screamed it and someone said "it's underneath us - get out" so I went back inside my office a told everyone to get out now! We were there for the collapse of the second tower. Me and a couple buddies volunteered for search and rescue. When we arrived people were running out of clouds of smoke and dust from the first one that collapsed 15min later the second one dropped. I'm sure you saw the footage of the clouds of smoke and shit blowing through the streets, we were caught in that but were luckily far enough from the implosion that we just got covered with dust and shit...my lungs are killin me. When thing calmed down people started to organize again and just blocks from us Tower 7 dropped and we were caught, literally in a fucking stampede of people, hundreds, running north up Hudson being chased by clouds of dust. It was so scary people had no idea what was going on diving under cars. People were yelling that a bomb went off... Then all you could smell was gas and shit. We headed up town about 20 blocks and hung out at a volunteers apartment and waited for things to calm down which is fuckin impossible after what ya just witnessed. When we finally headed out again and we were quickly escorted out of another area where a suspicious suitcase was left in the street. I can't believe the shit that I've seen today. They finally told people to leave the area because at the time the FBI and CIA turned the area into a crime scene because of the number of police that were killed and layin all over the ground dead with there guns still on them. It was so friggin surreal. Tomorrow we are heading back. All they give ya is a mask, gloves and orange vests and I guess they just send ya in.... The stories we've heard from firefighters were unreal... They were warning us that what we are about to see is disturbing as hell.. They told us stories of shoes that were just layin all over the ground empty. My buddy Craig also lost his girlfriend who worked on the 102nd floor of the first tower that was hit. It really helps to know that people are thinking of us and we do feel very connected. My family and I are fine, but this will definitely change all of our lives. I'm back to work after taking off yesterday, and I just cannot seem ot get any work done. Every meeting that I attend today is entirely monopolized by people reflecting on the situation. My boss just told me not to expect to get anything at all done this week. I think we will be ok, but even without directly knowing anyone who may be dead, its still an incredible numbness that has yet to peak. I walked up 5th avenue Tuesday and it was like a parade route. People mobbed the sidewalks in silence, while fire trucks and emergency vehicles rushed by all going the same direction. About a mile away, I could see the builidings burning and mangled steel hanging out of the huge black hole in the North side. Smoke was pouring off of it like a lit cigarrette. As I walked away towards work, people were sitting on the sidewalk crying, and others were franticaly trying to dial their cell phones while running toward it. Tourists were confused and clearly did not understand what was happening. My sister-in-law, Lucy went home from the stock exchage immediately after the first plane hit and made it home before everything was closed up. The exchange has lots of clients and employees that worked in the towers and she has been on an emotional rollercoaster ever since. She knows that many of her friends and associates are dead, but there is no confirmation of anything yet. Not one. It could conceiveably take months to know. She is considering the possibility of not going back to work there at all. On that day, people were wandering away from the building, and many even walked over bridges to get home. It was just like the confusion that you see after an earthquake. Several times I found myself not knowing what to do or how to feel. We were told that all transit was suspended, and that we should sit tight until more information was available. I don't consider my office builiding to be a particular target so I was not worried, but my wife scolded me later for not leaving ritght away. There was nowhwere to go for a while. I considere walking over the George Washington bridge, and then my Brother called. He had been in NY and came to my office when he could not get out. His plan was to walk north until we could get to a commuter railroad that was still operating. It would be a 10 mile walk, but that is what he wanted to do. My office ordered pizza for everyone and when we finished, we heard that some trains were running outbound. We went to Grand Central Terminal where they were packing trains full of people and sending them off. I called Carmela (wife) from my brother's house to tell her that I was safe. That was not good enough and she said that she needed to see me in person to feel like it was over. Carmela suggested that we hang a flag in front of our house. Normally I would think that seem a bit cheezey, but I did it and feel good about it. I spoke with Eduardo yesterday and I got the feeling that people in LosAngeles are very nervous about the whole thing. We have jets and helicopters patroling the area, and we now hear them frequently from our home at night. There are warships in the area and I've never seen so many police, even in my neighborhood. When I rode the bus into Manhattan this morning, I could see the NY skyline very well before going into the tunnel. Today, all that I could see was a group of midtown buildings near the Empire State building. The buildings around where the trade center was are not even tall enought to notice. Just wanted to touch base with all of you and update you on our experiences here today. First of all, we appreciate all of the phone calls and e-mails we have received throughout the day. For those of you who have tried to call and haven't been able to get through--we understand. Our phone lines have been off and on all day and it has been extremely frustrating. It seems like the only reliable phone service we can get right now is with our cell phones-- the opposite of this morning. The smoke that had been headed toward our neighborhood shifted with the wind and we were really in no danger of breathing in any debris. We live, luckily, far enough away and were able to open our windows later in the afternoon. Ehren was home by 3 p.m.--and remarkably it only took him two hours to get home (usually the commute home is a little under an hour). Luckily a few trains were up and running out of Manhattan--just not inbound. He ended up having to walk 60 blocks in Brooklyn since most trains reaching our place were shut down. Having the four of us in one place was the most comforting feeling in the world. As melodramatic as it may sound, one of the only things that is keeping us from totally giving up on humanity today is the reminder that we have such wonderful friends around the world. Those phone calls and messages reaffirm the fact that there are so many people in this world with the same pain and same feelings of loss about the tragedy this morning. Our experiences in Up With People remind us how small of a world this is and how many people in every nation really do have the desire to want to work together and stand on a common ground. Knowing that we are not alone in our loss is a comfort. Trivial as it may be, an aspect of this event that is only now hitting home for us is the complete loss of a major part of our NY life. The World Trade Center is the hub of our leisure time, and Mayah and Luke love visiting it. We were at the top earlier this summer, the mall on the concourse is where we do a lot of our shopping, and a nearby movie theater is "our" theater for watching movies as a family. We always marvel at the size and beauty of the towers, which Mayah instantly identifies as "The Twin Towers!". And the only way we can convey to the kids the magnitude of what has happened is to tell them that all of these things are now gone. And when you break it down into those simple terms--that all of the people and places that we have come to love and enjoy in our brief time here are just gone--it hits home hard. Our subway lines are affected and our jobs are located below 14th street--the area that has been completely cordoned off for at least tomorrow. Little things, like how long can we go without working and making money, are a real concern. Our grocery store was closed today. Our phones don't even work! Of course, in the grand scheme of things these types of things should be the least of our worries. But now that we're safe, we don't know what to do next. The church across the street from our apartment has a huge banner that reads "Open for Prayer"--maybe that's all there is to do next. There are so many different things to mourn about this situation that it is hard to concentrate on one. It sounds ridiculous, but do we mourn for our country? Do we mourn for the families who have lost loved ones? Do we worry about our commute to work and when our kids will go back to school? Do we worry about those companies who have been completely wiped out and what kind of impact that will have on the economy? Even more people are out of jobs now--we should worry about those people who have to live with experiencing this tragedy, losing coworkers and still being left to deal with the fact that they have no job and need to start over emotionally and financially? Or we can worry about the fact that now Ehren's search for another job becomes even more difficult. Do we worry about the safety of our city now that such a huge number of our police officers and fire fighters have lost their lives? Do we worry about what's to come for our country- not just tomorrow, but for months and years to come? So many thoughts keep whirling in and out of our minds. We knew when we tucked our kids into bed tonight that no matter how high to their chins we pulled up their covers and no matter how tightly they were tucked in that we can't keep them safe from harm at all times. There's a feeling that we've let our kids down by bringing them into a world where these types of things happen. There are people out there in the world who are bad and we can't stop them from hurting us. I (Caroline) picked up Luke early from school today and on the way home I showed him the billowing smoke and tried to explain things. Luke said he knew something bad happened in the city today and that everything would be ok. He said "Mom, you saved me." What he doesn't know is that I definitely couldn't feel less heroic right now. He said "It's a good thing those bad guys are goners 'cause they were on the planes, too". When we got home Luke started making planes out of Legos and said he's going back in time to stop the bad guys before they get "our buildings". If only it were that easy to fix. We did make sure to reassure our kids that even though there are "bad guys" out there there are a lot of good guys helping to save the people who got hurt. I only wish I could FEEL as confident as we sounded at the dinner table tonight. Are our good guys going to save us? I feel five years old, too. We grieve at the horrific loss of innocent lives and condemn in the strongest possible terms such attacks on the United States, especially the cowardly use of hijacked civilian passenger aircraft as weapons of terror. Terrorist attacks like this indeed strike at the very heart of civilized society around the globe. We call on physicians and health professionals throughout the nation to do all in their power to assist in the extraordinary efforts needed to provide medical care to the large numbers of injured and traumatized citizens who have suffered from these attacks. Our thoughts and prayers are especially with those families whose loved ones have been killed or whose fates are as yet unknown. PSR also acknowledges with profound gratitude the large number of messages and resolutions of condolence and support that we have received here in Washington from physicians and organizations around the world. We recognize and approve UN Security Council Resolution 1368 of September 12 which calls on all states to work cooperatively to bring the perpetrators of these terrorist attacks to justice under law. PSR is also reminded of the very real need for the our nation to reassess our security priorities in the wake of this heinous attack. We believe that such immense sums would be better spent in improving security within the United States, in reducing and eliminating nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, in helping to rebuild and assist victims in New York and Washington, and in beginning to address the inequities in our society and in the world that help breed hatred, violence, and terrorism. As we weep for our country and take pride in the compassion and heroism that so many of our fellow Americans have shown in this hour, we know that such scenes of human devastation -- whether from war, civil conflict, terrorism, poverty, environmental degradation, starvation, or disease -- are all too frequent around the globe. I watched the second hit on the WTC live, and the first bldg going down. I was out voting this morning, and people were drifting down to the waterfront, to see following the first bldg hit. When I got there, about the top fifth of the north tower was smoking, with flames visible at the base. A black plume of smoke from the bldg came in our direction across the river to our waterfront. Papers that had flown out of the windows off of desks also drifted towards us in Brooklyn, looking like white confetti in the black smoke. As I watched, an explosion sounded and the top half of the south tower was engulfed in a wall of red and gold flames. The flames didn't last long, but black smoke enveloped that bldg and headed our way, and the papers flew out of that building( I picked up a few that came down on the street where I was) I walked up to the Heights Promenade which has an unimpeded view and of course it was crowded and everyody was somber. And after a short while, we watched live as the south world trade center bldg either imploded straight down or toppled, couldn't tell. White clouds rolled down at a low level away from the bldg from west to east across wall street area and to the waterfront, It looked like very thick white fog rolling down. Shortly, all of the skyline was whited out and the debris clouds were rolling our ways. The winds headed right to us. Very shortly, every one was fleeing the Promenade, as the debris and smoke headed our way. People were going home, me too, with a cloth over their mouth and nose. I am now indoors, to get away from the smoke and debris, closed all the windows and the AC air vents. The radio said the second bldg went down. The sky clouded over, then cleared, then probably from the second bldg's demise, it clouded again, it's mixed now, on what is actually a very sunny day. Like every one else, I am listening to the radio, and probably need to be indoors all day because of the debris and the smoke in the air down here. ___________ Later same day, to one of my correspondents ______________ I wish we had tonight a meeting that has room for and gets out the whole neighborhood so we could all be together. They say in a few days, give blood, they say they have too many already today. The unitarian church is supposed to be having an interfaith service tonight at 7pm. I did go out again, people are on the streets with dust masks, most businesses, banks, pharmacies, etc closed down. The police were issued dust masks. On my block, ash dust thick on the cars. Richard; I'm glad you are Ok, and I am sad for what you had to see. My building 115 Broadway, has it's back entrance on Trinity, which becomes Church Street - the street on which the front plazas of the WTC buildings were. I usually would have been making a deposit on Tuesdays in the World Financial Center, adjacent to the Towers, but when I arrived at my office of the 17th floor at 8:30 was given another project. When we heard the first impact, saw the rain of debris and paperwork raining down we were scared. I made several calls to let people know I was ok. The second impact set the Tower closer to us (2 blocks) ablaze. To see 20 or so stories of a building ablaze only a few hundred yards away as debris flies by your window is truly terrifying. When we left, I made my way as quickly as possible East and then North. I was concerned about further explosions, and flying debris, never expecting those towers could actually collapse. The sight of these two building ablaze, that hundreds were dead or dying right above me made me numb. I actually had to stop a policeman to ask how to get north. 15 minutes later - I was at 19th street, the first collapse occurred. I was spared actually seeing the planes crash "live" as well as seeing the buildings fall...I was already uptown. Two hours later I made it to Trinity Church. We have had two services at church...all of NY is numb...I'm glad you're ok, and look forward to seeing you this Sunday. May God help us to get thru this. While events were unfolding that day, I summarized them in a document which went to some colleagues in the UK. This is what I wrote: September 11, 2001: The United States has been attacked for the first time since 1941. About 8:30 a.m. two commercial aircraft were hijacked and crashed in to each of the World Trade Center towers. One was a Boeing 767 with 90 passengers and crew on-board. It left Boston for Los Angeles. The other originated from Dulles in Washington and had 60 passengers and crew. A commuter plane was hijacked and crashed into the base of the Pentagon in Washington, DC. It passed through the outer walls into the inner ring. The Pentagon is burning and part has collapsed. There is word that an explosion of some sort occurred at the Capitol. A car bomb exploded outside the state department in Washington. Here in Iowa, we responded with shock mixed with disbelief, and a little fear. In offices, televisions and radios collected stunned listeners one by one. Locally, a radio station has broken its news coverage to play The National Anthem. It brings tears to the eyes of some in the office. As I write this, the radio is broadcasting that one of the World Trade towers has collapsed under its own weight. The northwest tower began leaning and collapsed two hours later. Thousands of people worked in the Towers, or in the neighboring area. The horrific destruction and loss of life is unimaginable. All aircraft in the skies have been ordered to land immediately. The local airport is closed. Cars in the short-term parking lot are being moved to locations away from the terminal for security reasons. A 747 that was unaccounted for was presumed hijacked. It may be the plane that crashed in western Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh. The crew, one can hope, died courageously to keep others from being killed on the ground. All federal buildings in Washington have been ordered closed or moved to a more secure state. Across the country, other federal offices are being closed.
