Well, I sit here feeling drained after spending a day in London surrounded by a people who share in our grief. At 11 am, a three-minute moment of silence was observed all across Europe. The parking meter maid man outside my window stood, hands clasped and head bowed, the traffic stopped, and all was truly quiet. Then, on the news, I watched the memorial service at St. Pauls Cathedral where the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, and the entire congregation sang the Star Spangled Banner. Hearing these Brits sing this song will forever be etched in my heart and memory. Even my landlord, a Frenchman, hand-wrote Jeff and me a long letter of sympathy for the horror that Americans are experiencing and expressing his support. I feel the unspoken strength of spirit being offered to us everywhere I go. You are probably hearing about this in America, but I wanted to share with you that it is very real. We are not alone. It is heartening. I sit glued to the television set, tuned alternatively to CNN or the BBC, watching for glimmers of hope in a pile of rubble. It is good to see President Bush out and about. It is important to me and every American over here that Ive come to know that we see him. I know tonight that many of you put out your candles and you are hanging your flags. I wish we could too. I want so much to hang a banner screaming, Yeah, Baby, Were Still Standing! Who knows, perhaps I shall. But we are a nation at war, and Im in a foreign country it is frustrating to be suspended like this. My thoughts are with you all. I have not heard from Kovacs yet, but will look forward to it. One of the many ways 9/11 has changed our world is that I have not followed up on many things I was working on before, like an interview with you...I haven't forgotten, though... In more substantial ways, the United States seems much the same, although a bit tenser and, like any country who's soldiers are at war, a bit more patriotic than normal and a bit more willing to curb civil liberties. On the other hand, Americans have learned more positive things about Islam and Muslims in the past four weeks than they have in the past 40 years. One of my most favorite examples is from the University of Michigan, where hundreds of non-Muslim women wore veils for a week to demonstrate solidarity with their fellow students. Here at GMU we have hundreds, if not thousands of students from the Middle East or South Asia...I have three Palestinians in my classes alone. That means that the campus is a more tolerant place than most universities in the US...I'm told that my former employer Texas Tech has had some minor problems...fist fights, etc. I have suffered a great deal of anxiety about my children, especially when at night I see the fighter planes circling over our home. Sometimes I have to bring them to bed to sleep with us just so I feel they are somehow safer. Just last night Susan and I made up our evacuation box...something we could throw in the car at a moment's notice and flee the area in the event of a biological attack...which our government keeps warning us to be ready for. Can you imagine? On the one hand we felt silly, but on the other, we felt as though we had to do it just in case...especially now that the government tells us to beware an attack this weekend. Susan was supposed to go to California this weekend but the trip was postponed because her friend there was ill...now we are happy that it turned out that way. Probably nothing will happen, but we live in this state of constant anticipation that is never far from the surface. As a parent, you know how much I want to just move to the mountains somewhere for a year or two and come back down once this is all over... I hope all is well there with your family. I'm trying to figure out a way to come to CE this summer for a week or two for research, but who knows what will happen at this point? Hi Mom, Dad and Brian, As you know from my phone call and Matthew's e-mail, I'm safe and sound at Matthew's place. For the time being I think we're going to stay put here. There's no way for me to get home other than walking, anyway. This is the most horrendous thing I've ever witnessed. I'm really quite lucky... When I got of the [N] train downtown to go to my office, I was actually IN the World Trade Center on the Mezzanine level. This was just a minute or two after the first plane hit the north tower. People were running out of the building, screaming and crying and I didn't waste any time getting out of there. When I got outside, there was debris everywhere. It was smoky and there was a lot of ash and other stuff raining down. Had I been outside a few minutes earlier, I might have been hit by the large pieces that fell when the plane crashed into the tower... I quickly made my way to my office, dusted all of the soot off of me, called mom, and was talking to mom when the second explosion hit. At that point, I told everyone that we needed to get out of there and we all went downstairs and made our way uptown on foot. We kept glancing over our shoulders and it was unbelieveable to see those to big towers going up in flames. There was a huge, visible gash in the north tower where the first plane hit and I heard people saying that people were jumping from the upper floors. I tried not to look. I walked straight to Matthew's and we actually watched the towers collapse from the windows in his living room. I still really can't believe this has happened. It's so strange to look downtown and see nothing where two huge towers used to be. And there's still a lot of smoke and dust down that way, meanwhile it's a beautiful, dry sunny day in the rest of Manhattan and strangely calm -- with the exception of the fighter planes that keep flying over. People are milling about in the streets and everyone is just in shock... I can't imagine how many innocent people perished in this senseless tragedy, and I'm just really thankful to be alive. From: To: Sent: Monday, September 24, 2001 8:31 AM Subject: New York Trip--Part 3 The strongest set of impressions that I have from the trip to New York made by our group of six Alamogordo citizens, revolves around some very strong and personal reactions to certain sights and scenes. The first of these has to do with two trips to Greenwich Village. The Village is far south on Manhattan. It, along with East Village, SoHo, TriBeCa, Little Italy, Chinatown, the Lower East Side, and the Battery Park area comprise Downtown. This is the area south of 14th Street and contains the World Trade Center, City Hall Park, the Stock Exchange, and the South Street Seaport, among other attractions. Fourteenth Street,Houston (which, by the way, the New Yorkers pronounce HOWSTEN), and Canal Street at various times after the World Trade Center tragedy, served as the boundaries for persons moving south on the island. Any movement south of 14th Street was generally prohibited. The war zone started there. As I noted in an earlier article, our group of six had ventured down to Greenwich Village on Monday evening, September 10, the evening before the attack on the World Trade Center. We had a good time walking the lively and friendly streets of the Village, teeming with people enjoying the after-rain coolness of a dog-day summer evening. We stopped in a local pub on the corner of Houston and Sullivan Street, had a drink or two, and listened to the more-than-mildly obscene lyrics of a singer auditioning for a job or just jamming around. It had been a long travel day so we made our way back to our hotel on 47th Street and called it a day. The next morning literal hell broke loose. What makes this visit to the Village so poignant in my mind is a return trip to the same area that Linnie and I made on Thursday, September 13. We had tickets to see The Fantasticks, which has been playing at the Sullivan Street Playhouse for 42 years. It is due to close for good in January, 2002. New York theatres had been closed on Tuesday and Wednesday but a few planned to open on Thursday. I called the box office and was assured that it would be open and the play was a go. The box office manager also told me we could ride the subway all the way to Houston Street. Linnie and I headed south on the subway. We found cars that were not nearly filled to capacity, an unusual condition. We also found that the farther south we traveled the more the train slowed. Its vibration was considered a danger to some buildings standing near the Trade Center area. We found that we could not go as far south as Houston but had to exit the subway at 14th Street. No big deal, we would catch a bus or taxi and continue the several blocks to Sullivan Street. Wrong! No buses or taxis were allowed south of 14th Street. We walked to Houston and retraced Monday's steps over to Sullivan Street. We went to the box office and picked up our tickets and went back to the bar we had been in on Monday. The difference in the Village was so startling as to stay etched in my brain. It was as if the spirit had gone. The streets and gutters were filled with particulate matter that had settled and continued to settle. The air was acrid with bitter smoke. Most of the people on the street had filters or masks over their nose and mouth. To say that the people were zombie-like would be a bit of exaggeration, but not much. They were hollow-eyed and moved with some sort of stress-induced slowness. I keep coming back to the appearance of Londoners during the blitz; the analogy holds true here. There was an added feature that addressed the most touching of human tragedy. Impromtu bulletin boards had made their appearance in any place that would support them. On these boards were pictures, descriptions, pleas for information concerning the missing. These very human reminders were heartbreaking. The bar we had enjoyed previously was quiet and subdued. The ubiquitous TV played out the latest in the doleful story. The barmaid was eager to tell us her story of where she was and what she saw. We had run into the same thing with the man at the theatre box office. Everybody had a story and seemed to need the catharsis of telling it. We nursed our drinks until time to head the half block to the theatre. When we arrived we were informed that the cast of the play simply could not go on. They could not deal with light comedy in the midst of the misery around the Village. Disappointed but certainly understanding, Linnie and I started our trek back north. We got as far as Washington Square Park which is just off 5th Avenue and generally forms a sort of entry way into the Village. We rested on a park bench and watched a bit of the human drama which is always there in a New York park. As we sat, somewhat in our own thoughts, an attractive, middle-aged, slight, Oriental woman tapped Linnie on the shoulder. She looked up 5th Avenue and nodded toward a building and inquired in very broken English, "Empire State Building?" Linnie, who is in love with the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, answered in the affirmative. The lady then looked south and said, "World Trade Center. So sorry, so sorry." She very politely bowed and turned and walked away. This, I think, was a defining moment for Linnie. She has not had a truly dry eye since then. We returned to the subway prepared to wait for our train only to be informed that it did not matter which train we took, they were just running in one direction: away from the war zone. The difference between Greenwich Village on Monday, September 10, 2001, and Thursday, September 13, 2001, defines in my mind what happened to this great city. It remains my most vivid impression of this week in our history. A strange sort of impression also stays in my mind. It has to do with the group with which I was traveling and a protective device we arrived at without fully realizing what we were doing. Get in mind, this was a bunch of school teachers who had been educated to have some trust in the things that civilized man has developed to mark that civilization; things like poetry, music, art. We seemed to want some assurance that the best ideas of mankind still existed. We found ourselves reciting bits of poetry. All of us had come through small schools in the days when memorizing poetry was required. The poems, or more nearly the bits of poems, we remembered seemed to speak to a time when civility and not incivility prevailed, when good seemed more in command than evil. I got a chance to recite the last verse of William Cullen Bryant's Thanatopsis in Bryant Park. We could not remember the author of Invictus (William Ernest Henley, as we later discovered). We stopped at a street book vendor and found an old volume of poetry that Roger Haley purchased. It was not just poetry; we sought things that demonstrated our culture. Through the days we were in New York, all or some of us visited the Metropolitan Museum, after it reopened, the New York Public Library, one of the four or five great libraries in the world, the Hispanic Society of America Museum, Columbia University, Riverside Church, St. John the Divine Church, or any other place where we could find that cultural spark we were seeking. In a way, I think we all understood the deep and jarring contrast as we sat in Bryant Park and saw the growing column of smoke and debris that marked one of the great acts of inhumanity in our history, and immediately to the east of us just a few feet was the New York Public Library, one of the greatest repositories of the best ideas of humanity. The contrast was jarring, particularly when coupled with the very real possibility that a hijacked plane might be heading for that Library. Roger Haley has tried to isolate some articles that explain what motivated our actions in regard to poetry and art and books during this period. He has sent a couple that seem to speak to the phenomena. Robert McCrum, writing in the London Observer, "Poetry is one thing. Books also give us the reassurance that others have been here before us and have suffered something of what we are suffering. They signal across a black universe of despair, like stars, saying 'You are not alone'." Eric McHenry sent a copy of W.H.Auden's poem, September 1, 1939, to several friends. It was written on the occasion of Hitler's attack on Poland and is amazing in its insights into our condition as we looked at the World Trade Center disaster. McHenry wrote "Tragedy sends people to poetry," and "Poetry does justice to life by describing it,not by reducing it to more reasonable dimensions." Auden's poem ends with this stanza: Defenseless under the night Our world in stupor lies; Yet dotted everywhere, Ironic points of light Flash out wherever the Just Exchange their messages: May I, composed like them Of Eros and of dust, Beleaguered by the same Negation and despair, Show an affirming flame. The despair of our little group was deepened when we received word of the death of Al Marchand. Two of our number, Linnie Townsend and Jimmy Smith, had had Al in classes at the college. We all knew him. The loss of a good man diminishes all of us but it becomes an affirmation that good men lived and labored and good men still live to carry on. Sorry this is so last minute, but when the attack first happened, the last thing I was thinking about was the upcoming booksigning. I think we've all been focusing on the terrible tragedy and little else, so I'm sure you'll forgive me. My apologies for giving those of my Boston area fans such late notice, but when I finally remembered I had a booksigning, I spent a great deal of time then trying to decide whether or not to cancel the event. I thought I might set up a table in the back of the store so I could meet with those of you on this list who'd already told me you were coming, but that way not seem as if I were attempting to "sell" the book to any foot traffic from the mall. I'm hyperaware that the subject matter of this book (terrorists hijack a commercial jet) is something that most people probably won't want to read about right now. And the last thing I want is for people to think I'm trying to "make good" on this terrible national tragedy. But yesterday I got a call from my editor informing me that Waldenbooks and B&N have canceled all events for the next two weeks, so the decision was taken out of my hands. When I spoke to my editor, she told me that if I'd come to her with the events of the past few days as the plot of a book, she would have turned it down -- too unrealistic. I told her that when I did my research for OVER THE EDGE, I had to search to find an airport in Europe in which a terrorist hijacking could believably take place. (It would never happen in London, one of my contacts informed me.) I spoke to a number of people and read countless news articles before deciding on Athens as my point of origin for my hijacked plane. Little did I realize that there was another such airport -- Logan in Boston -- right in my own backyard. My heart is with all of my friends and fans in New York and Washington, D.C., and across the country who have lost loved ones in this attack. My prayers and thoughts are with each and every one of YOU today, too. Not just my American friends and fans, but ALL freedom loving people around the world. Because this attack was on all of us, and this war against terrorism is one that we must all commit to fighting with all of our hearts. The hatred must stop. The evil of terrorism must be cut out of our lives like the cancer that it is, so that innocent people of all races and religions all around the world can lives their lives in peace and harmony. He had managed to leave me a message last night when I was out, getting some air and a change of scenery for a few minutes. On his trip to Oslo from the airport, he was hearing words, "World Trade Center", "Pentagon", "high-jackers". He was so absorbed trying to understand the Norwegian words, that he missed his exit. As he was groping his way to the hotel, he stopped and asked a police officer for directions. By a strange coincidence, he was at the American Embassy, and the officer told him what was happening. He wanted everyone to know that he is OK, over in Oslo and asked me to contact some of you. He has tried to call several people and has had trouble getting through to this area, as phone lines have been unavailable. He was able to reach his Dad in Durham, who helped to calm him down - he was angry and bewildered, of course. He has been keeping up with things, and meeting lots of other travelers, exchanging tidbits of info. He said that every Norwegian that he meets offers condolences. Allen's biggest problem has been that his hotel doesn't have CNN, as they are changing service and the new one, with CNN, is not hooked up yet. I encouraged him to enjoy his trip, that there is really nothing he can do about this, and that it will go on for a long time; he knows he can't come back anyway. People were being told that flights might not return until late next week. He doesn't plan to even try to get back earlier than his scheduled Sept. 20th date (I think). While we were talking, the hotel sent him a message that the PC in the lobby was available, so he wanted to get on the internet and see what he could learn. People were going to bars and restaurants to watch CNN. He knew details about the news that I did not, so he seems to be keeping up. His experience in air traffic control was kicking in and making him curious about the high-jackers process. So, this is just a note to let you all know that he is well, though frustrated, and probably will proceed on at least part of his planned tour. If you want to ask questions of me, call me. It had the largest Jewish Library of Latin America. Records of the first imigration of jews into Argentina. Many, many of those books were recovered from under debris and with patience and volunteers were recovered.
