Back in the '93 or so I was heading out the door with a co-worker, on my way down to 92nd floor of 2 WTC when the phone rang. I still remember standing in the doorway, one foot out, and then stepping back in to take the call. I was needed elsewhere and the other guy continued down to the Trade Center alone. He was there when they bombed the basement parking garage and wound up walking a smoke filled stairwell from 92 down to 78 back up to 92 and then down again to the street. On the 9/11 attack I was up here in midtown, just a few days away from moving full time into the 50th floor of 1 WTC. Working for IBJ on the merger of IBJ, DKB, and FBK into Mizuho Bank, most of my job involved getting people from IBJ into the offices of DKB on floors 48 ~ 50 in 1WTC. The third bank, FBK, had their offices up in 2 WTC (this was where my co-worker was during the first bombing). The first plane hit above our folks in 1 WTC. Everybody got out. The one loss for IBJ was my buddy Jack. He happened to have a meeting that day at the FBK offices in 2 WTC. From what I've heard he headed out of the building when the first tower was burning but, like many others, heeded the announcement that the fire was contained to 1 WTC and that everybody should return to their offices. A few minutes later the second plane hit tower 2. (You know that Homey don't play that, no way sucker, if I'm in tower two and tower one is burning you best believe I'm halfway home before they even think about telling me all clear). FBK lost around 19 folks, most were senior Japanese management, including the president of the bank, at their desks early and reluctant to leave. (Homey ain't playin that neither). So on the 12th I head to work, get to my office and find that we're closed for the day. Nice of em to wait until after I make the absurdly delayed and jumbled 2 hour commute to tell me about it, but wtf, a day off is a day off so I head back home. Next paycheck arrives and I'm a little light in the wallet, 7 hours worth. I call the numbskulls out in Brisbane and they tell me it's because I didn't work on the 12th. I politely remind them that the office was closed and isn't it a little bit of a bad time to be fucking with people about their hours. They tell me they'll "check into it" and get back to me, I tell them I'll gladly hop on a plane out there to "KICK- THEM-IN-THEIR-FUCKING-ASSES into it" if it will help. My missing pay showed up in the next check. In another stellar employee-employer relations example, the airports open again and they stick me on a flight to Chicago. I make two trips in one week, the job - unscrew a cable and hand it to some dude, hang out and standby for about 8 hours til about 1 AM. I'm not too keen on the flying part, nor having to work in the shadow of the Sears Tower, especially not for some useless bullshit work, but I do what I gotta do, yuh-know, and take consolation in the fact that I'm sticking 41 hours of overtime up their flat asses. I land at LaGuardia to the news that some looney tried to force his way into the cockpit of a CHI bound jet, screaming something about smashing into the Sears Tower. Isn't that special? With my desk/office/workplace at the WTC destroyed I wonder where they'll have me work. Midtown is best for me, my LIRR train comes and goes into Penn Station. Staten Island or Jersey City (two possible sites) are really bad commute-wise. I don't even want to think about trying to do it, I figure that if I'm asked to work from either of those locations I'd best just get a new job. Luckily they decide to keep me in midtown and work from Rockafeller Center. So of course I'm heading into the building when I notice a crowd gathering, looks like a press conference. I'm not too keen on the idea of gathering in a crowd, near some VIP's, in front of a landmark building (just paint a target on yer friggin head ferchrissakes) so I ease away and ask some foreign looking teevee guy whazzup. He tells me there's anthrax here, I say, ah great, let's all crowd up and get closer. Turns out some of ol' Tom Brokenjaw's peeps got the shit... right over there in fact [pointing]. Naturally it would happen when I'm a week into a nasty chest cold and busy hacking up chunks of lung. Anthrax, schmanthrax, just like a bad case of the clap... not any worse than the aftereffects of a night with the working "ladies" round the docks in Naples, Italy... or so I hear. Since then several media outlets have been thrax'd, over there, there, there, and there [pointing out the window to various sites]. Hi everyone -- Pardon the big group email, but I'm just sending one out to everyone who's inquired about the last few days in NYC. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Obviously, we have suffered a national tragedy in New York. I think everyone's prayers and hopes go out to all of the people who were senselessly killed in this absolutely evil act of stupidity. I've recently received a bunch of phone calls and emails, and since the story is too long to explain to everyone separately, I thought I would send out this group mail to answer some of the more commonly asked questions, especially for those of you who are out of the state, or out of the country. Before I continue, let me just say that I've seen and done things in the last 48 hours that I never ever dreamed even remotely possible, and it probably won't even sound real. (It freaks me out because I can't believe it myself when I say it.) 1) How are you Dirk? I'm fine. Tired, but fine. 2) Is everyone OK? Everyone in my immediate circle of friends is OK, but I have several friends in the Fire and EMS world whose loved ones are still unaccounted for. 3) What did you do when the World Trade Center got bombed? I was working at Brooklyn Hospital, which is right on the other side of the Manhattan bridge, not far from lower Manhattan. I left the hospital and responded to the incident about an hour after the second tower collapsed. I went with a group of four (me, a PA, a PA student, and a Radiologist MD) and went to go look for victims. Before crossing the bridge, we dealt with a pregnant woman stuck in a municiple building in Brooklyn who couldn't get an ambulance, and whose contractions were a minute apart. After seeing to it that she was OK, we put together a makeshift first aid kit, walked across the bridge (now closed to all but essential traffic), and walked down to the site of the building to look for victims or other doctors / EMS who needed help. 4) How did it look down there? Very grim. The pictures in the news tell the story pretty well, except the dust and ashes were so thick I thought it was nighttime. The mask I had helped, but I still ended up tasting the stuff. The details I'll leave to the news reports. 5) What happened next? I can't even begin to explain this part, but to make a long story short, there was a lack of early leadership in organizing the medical effort. I took it upon myself to assume a leadership position and organized the triage and treatment areas, and (with the help of the FDNY and a large dedicated group of doctors, nurses, EMTs, and paramedics) set up a MASH-style unit on the corner of Greenwich and Moore. By 2:00 in the afternoon we had a full triage area (critical care, subcritical care, non-critical trauma, and the "no-problem-but-need-counseling" areas), we had a MERV (a surgical bus), a team of surgeons, a morgue, a food area, bathrooms, and a complete record-tracking system. Not bad if I don't say so myself. We had doctors from every specialty you can imagine, including trauma surgery, orthopedic surgery, general surgery, radiology (but no equipment), urology, pulmonology, ER, family practice, internal medicine, general surgery, psychiatry, and neurology. We also had teams of critical care and ER nurses, and also an entire team of paramedics and EMTs for codes and transport. And lastly, our counseling group included everything from priests and ministers (of every denomination) to psychotherapists, counselors, and social workers. 6) How many patients did you see? Despite having set up almost a full MASH-style unit, and having been designated the "primary recieving area" for about two hours, we only saw 16 patients. About half were rescue workers themselves. We only saw one victim from the actual building, I believe, and they did not have a serious injury. The remaining patients were all people who were injured while walking from the site, or were having respiratory difficulty, or other injuries. We did have one firefighter who had cardiac problems while fighting the blazes - The patient was treated and transported to a hospital for observation. (Since the hospitals were not full on Tuesday night.) 7) Why did you have so few patients? There were a few reasons : a) We were not the only trauma center in the city -- FDNY had set up several similar efforts, in case the city had lots of patients. b) Severely injured patients were brought directly to hospitals, as long as they would accept them. Our unit would have responded to either patients who would not survive the trip, or in case the hospitals would not be able to handle the capacity. c) Sadly, there were almost no survivors. 8) What happened then? At about 11:00 FDNY realized there were almost no survivors walking around, so they consolidated the triage centers and closed ours. 9) Did I really hear you on NPR radio? Yes. I was interviewed by a reporter on NPR radio. I'm shocked to find out how many people heard the interview. 10) What happened at the end? We cleaned up, people traded telephone numbers, and several doctors who were surprised that so much of this was being coordinated by a third-year medical student gave me their cards. By 12:00 midnight the site was clear, and all of the surgical and medical equipment was donated to one of the local ERs. 11) What is the mood like in NYC right now? Surprisingly, it's probably not *as* horrible as it seems on the news, but it's also changed. That's not to say it's not completely mind-blowingly devastating, but the city has not come to a complete standstill either. I think people recognize it as some sort of event of enormous magnitude, since the NY times sold out almost everywhere by 9:00am. Everything below 14th street is off-limits now, but above that people returned to work today, and many subways were running. Everyone is talking about it. I have get to meet anyone who knows they lost someone, but it seems everyone has a friend-of-a-friend who lost someone. Sitting on the subway, I found there were actually some conversations NOT related to the attack, and some kids were still playing out in the street. There is definitely a mood change, though. Broadway has been closed -- It doesn't seem right to have fun when you have that many people die senselessly. The airports are still closed right now. Some people are very angry and talk about quick retaliation. Others don't seem to care at all. It's a little hard to determine what the consensus is for That's about all I can say. Unfortunately, it only really describes a part of what the day was like. The whole story is much more complicated and needs a good hour or two to explain, but I hope you guys will accept this for now. Thanks for all of your email and phone calls, and keep your mind on those who lost friends and family in this terrorist attack. I rather like them. They don't entirely wipe out my fears, but cut down on ambient panic by a TON. first, and most important, close your browser. really. cnn is trying as hard as it can to scare you so you'll stay tuned in. if you must get news, get it from salon.com. they are as quick as CNN--and much smarter-- but there are no big red banners, pcitures of guys in gas masks, or pictures of villains. they simply list the headlines and you can click if you would like to read. second, do not turn on then nightly news--or if you must, give yourself a strict 60 second time limit. all you really need to know is, am i in imminent danger. if you turn on the TV and don't see flames or other hysteria, turn it off. you will never look back on your life and wish you had watched more network news. third, keep away from the NY Times. if you crave a newspaper experience, keep only the travel, arts, style, science, and dining out sections. throw the rest straight into the recycling bin without even glancing at it. in the place of all of this news input, buy travel magazines. Its almost 1:30 a.m. here and I should be getting to bed... I just haven't been able to sleep real well lately and I can't seem to ever turn off the news. I am just scared that if I stop watching something else is going to happen and I won't know about it... Just like this disaster... After I handed in my test that morning, I walked outside to such a beautiful, sunny, clear morning; I remember looking up into the blue sky thinking how perfect everything seemed at that moment (almost scary how gorgeous of a day it was)... I can almost still feel the sun on my back as I was walking across campus to work... I walked into the computer lab and sat down at the front desk computer feeling totally relaxed that my test was over. I opened my Internet browser to catch up on some news, and all I saw on CNN was the error message... I proceeded to try to open MSNBC and received the same message. I started to wonder what was wrong with the Internet connection. Then I saw it it was on the third news Web site I tried. Both of the towers of the World Trade Center had been hit by hijacked airplanes. News was breaking that the Pentagon had been hit by a third plane. My stomach dropped, but I kept reading. As if all of that wasnt horrible enough, I had an even worse sinking feeling because I remembered that you were in NYC for business meetings... I picked up my cell phone and dialed as fast as I could, but I couldnt get ahold of anyone... That evening when I got off work I received the call. You were okay; mom said that you were on Long Island when all this occurred... I have been thanking God over and over that you werent hurt during this horrid attack. We have all been trying to cope with what has happened though... ISU had a huge rally on the quad today... The President of the University called off all of our classes from 12-1pm so we could attend and show our support for the tragedy. It was sad, but it was also awesome to see everyone (almost 20,000 students and faculty) come together to share their thoughts and feelings about what happened. There was a lot of crying and hugging and praying together because there were quite a few people here who knew someone they still haven't heard from... Even though I am far away from NY, it seems like this event has affected me so much... I cant even begin to imagine how I would have felt if I was physically there... My heart goes out to everyone there... I wish there was something I could do besides sitting here and crying and worrying and feeling so badly for everyone who has been affected and wasn't as lucky as I was to learn you were safe... Sometimes I feel silly for getting so upset about it and just crying randomly while sitting in class or driving in the car, but then I sit back and realize that if I didn't get through this now, it will just build up inside me and who knows what would happen then... It just amazes me that this happened on U.S. soil though... In my lifetime I have never had to be faced with the threat of war, horrible acts of terrorism, or anything hitting so close to home, or maybe things have happened, but I was never at an age that I totally comprehended the seriousness of it... I have read in history books what wars were like in the past, and I read the news about wars going on in the Middle East, but nothing ever seemed as real as what happened on Tuesday morning... It scares me. I know I shouldn't let it take over because then the terrorists have won - they have instilled fear into my mind and they want me to be scared... And until Tuesday, I never thought I would EVER have to even think of something this horrid in my country... Anyway, I should probably be going... I guess I just needed to get all of that out, and you were the lucky one that I vented to (*half smile*)... If you made it this far through the email, thanks for listening. Dear Mike, it´s good (very good) to hear, that you´re alive ... btw I can´t imagine that you´re OK, having witnessed all that. But again it´s good to read that you make the best of it. I hope it will be most supportive to you (and your friends and family) if I tell you how we feel back in Germany. Sandra and myself, we are both very sad and shocked. Partly due to the excellent broadcasting and communication systems, that deliver real-time and very real and shocking news and pictures. At worked we interupted a quiete important meeting, because we were in the only meeting room with TV and nobody could hesitate to watch the incredible news. I am shocked not because I have lived in NYC but we have friends and relatives there. But most of all I think we are shocked because terrorism of that kind is new - even for us Germans. As you know, during the 70s and 80s Germany has seen brutal /left wing terrorism. However in most of the cases the terrorist targets were symbolic persons in politics and the economy. Dear CPL net, I thought you all might be interested in how important your email service was to me and my family yesterday and today. My daughter works at Salomon Smith Barney in New York City some ten blocks from the World Trade Center. My son goes to college in New York City and his dorm is 2 blocks from the WTC, across the part. Both were very close to the disaster yesterday. Both saw it all from their windows. Both were evacuated. Both are alive, thank you. Though considerably shaken. They were able to walk to Brooklyn where my daughter has her apartment. Anyway, our AT&T telephone service did not work yesterday or today (until a few minutes ago), giving us the "All circuits busy" message all the time. However, I was able to communicate with my daughter via email. She left SSB with her lap top and emailed me from cafes and her home. We were able to help my son get out of Manhattan--he was able to call out collect to me. All are safe. Dear Friends, It was with shock and a mounting horror that I witnessed the wanton destruction of lives and property in Lower Manhattan last night, our time. (Aust EST) I went to work this morning feeling absolutely numb. I work in the CBD (downtown) in Melbourne, Australia. I have never seen this city so quiet on a weekday. Please remember that the "delete" button is as easy to press. James' brother Tom and his trusty German Shepherd Tango have been involved in Search and Rescue operations for several years now. Tom lives just the other side of the Hudson in New Jersey and was walking Tango when he saw the second plane hit the WTC. His resolve to help has been steadfast, and I thought would send you his latest news from what is now being called "Ground Hero" XB Tango and I are are officially on the job, having just spent two days in the recovery (sadly) phase of the response to the attack. We are off today but will return tommorrow to Staten Island, site of the formerly-closed landfill (aka dump) where hundreds upon hundreds of trucks dump the wreckage from lower Manhattan. I will spare you the gruesome details. They are settling in for the long haul. It has the makings of a small city up there already. Mobile offices were brought in yesterday, the National Guard is laying concrete, and there are probably 20 tents there already. National Guard, NYPD, FBI, Secret Service, FAA. Trucks the size of a 3-story building move the wreckage into piles where law enforcement agents armed with rakes and shovels pull out the large pieces of metal. Then a dog checks the piles. All the while, these huge trucks and bulldozers are milling about and the FAA "sharpshooters" fire noisemakers at the seagulls to keep them away. Armagedon Junior we call it. We all wear white "bodysuits", safety glasses, hardhats and respirators. We also are provided free clothing including brand-new boots (donated by Nike) that we are encouraged to discard. This setting, with the noise, machinery and sheer number of people, really impairs the ability of the dogs so we work them for only 20-30 minutes before resting them again. Tango probably had 5-6 "shifts" each day. I won't work Tango more than two days in a row. Tuesday night we spent at a Red Cross shelter where out-of-town firefighters are also staying. Every need is met there - beds, showers, towels, underwear. Donations for the dogs include tons of food (not my brand, though), vitamins, eye and ear ointment and thousands of pairs of booties. I am going to take care of myself (and Tango) throughout this. I'll back off when I need to. I am unclear, as we all are, how long a period of time before the dogs' impact will lessen. However, with a view of the World Trade Center right down Sixth Avenue, it was emotionally frustrating to see some of these events take place right before my very eyes while knowing that there were so many people trapped inside. My best friend works in 2 World Trade Center, and without knowing until about 4:00 pm Tuesday that he had made it out safely, I was an emotional wreck. Many other close friends of mine also made it out safely. There are still a few unaccounted for, however, and it is this uncertainty that is the most painful. Today, while watching CBS, I noticed a pretty Indian girl on television holding up a photo to the camera. At first, I didnt really acknowledge who this person was. Then after taking a closer and more detailed look at the photo she was holding, I almost dropped my remote control. I realized that this girl was the daughter of some very dear family friends. The photo she was holding was an image of her and her brother. He worked for Carr Futures. He was in his mid to late twenties and was rising fast within the firm. Had I not been watching television at that specific moment, I would never have realized that, he too, was unaccounted for, and most likely dead. The fact is, there are too many people involved, and that makes it very difficult to actually comprehend who we have actually lost. There is an eerie silence in Manhattan. In a city that lives as if its on a constant adrenaline high, everything is numb. The people look different, the air smells strange and then, of course, there is that eerie silence. I find that the New York attitude is gone. People are actually letting the other person go first, whether its at the ATM or at the local Starbucks. In fact, instead of rushing to their destinations, people are calmly walking. Whats the rush? Why have we ever been in a rush?? Even traffic looks and sounds different. Cab drivers are even driving in an orderly fashion. In fact, Im almost certain that I actually saw one of them use his blinkers today. I wish I could say that this level of stillness is soothing, but it most certainly is not. And as I write to you, I hear thunder slowly rumbling in the distance. Its supposed to rain tonight. On one end, that may be a good thing by helping calm down some of the fires that continue to persist. On the other end, the rain may also hamper the ongoing rescue efforts. Tonight, I have also received numerous e-mails from various people all across the United States. I have been asked to forward this on to as many people as possible. Sept 11, 11:30 am Sophie et al, I was to meet with Mayor Giuliani this morning and give a presentation for a commission at 10:00. They told me to come an hour early because of security so I was riding in a cab down Broadway at 8:45 when the first plane flew over. I couldn't believe it, I heard the engines and looked up, it was just above the buildings, a small jet I thought, and a moment later, a boom. Tons of beautiful white paper drifted down on Manhattan. Our Democratic primary is today and my first thought was that a candidate had dropped political leaflets. Or at worst a small jet had hit the World Trade Center and blown out the office stock, an accident possibly because of a heart attack; a lone pilot is enough to fly small jets here. I directed the cab a few blocks further and saw an amazing sight, a beautiful day and the North Tower on fire. I got out of the cab and watched as one person after another jumped to their deaths 90 stories up as the flames hit them. Behind me was the cavalry, a river of sirens and lights careening down the avenues ambulances, Harleys, ladder trucks, black & white weaving through traffic, all throttle and brake, honking, cursing, firemen craning their heads out the windows to look upwards, gaping at the damage, radio to the ear. It was the last thing they would never remember. I turned away and was staring at the South Tower when the second plane hit. The concussion took my courage. It was an explosion beyond description, I felt that it was 1945 and I was in Berlin, or maybe Pearl Harbor in '41. I could feel the heat three hundred yards away; everything on four or five floors, people and office equipment, came raining down on the crowd. We all ran north while it fell and got away before it hit because it was high up. As I glanced back I saw the contents of the floors on fire, people killed without a second to reconsider their lives. As I was running by City Hall I heard my name called. A woman, a Mayor's aide, recognized me and pulled me past the gauntlet that had surrounded City Hall. I figured that I would be safe in there. Giuliani has turned City Hall into a fortress over the past two years. We didn't know what was happening and where the other "bombs" were so no one wanted to move. We sat calmly on the steps of City Hall inside these iron gates and rings of well dressed and heavily armed mayor security detail and felt safe, all the while watching thousands of bewildered people run up the street. While sitting there speculating as to the future, the South Tower leaned over and fell onto Wall Street, and onto the emergency workers who had assembled there. It came down to the screams and wails of those watching, including mine. Never in history has anyone seen such a sight: A 110-story occupied building crashing onto other occupied buildings. I am sure that many people we know are dead. Suddenly there was this 30 foot cloud that looked like the sea coming at us. Solid, roiling and white, we didn't know what it was or if it was a biological weapon or even if one could breath in it if it wasn't. The size and force of the cloud told me it would blow out the windows at City Hall and that I should run for my life. I have never seen a New Yorker panic before, but we knew that something had happened way beyond our sassy world. We all scrambled behind city hall and jumped over the barricades and fences and got into the street and ran north. I threw one man's crutches over the final iron gate and then him. I never looked back. It was pandemonium. Periodically while I was running I would pause at crowds of people assembled around cars with loud radios so we could get news. No one knew what else would happen. After the second explosion everyone knew it was so coordinated so maybe the tunnels would go up next. All of New York stayed in the middle of the streets. Millions of people walking, and no one would go near a building or tunnel or subway. The subways were all shut down. Everywhere people were crying. One man saw me trying to use my cell (not working) and asked to call his wife in the World Trade Center. She was in the South Tower and certainly dead. I had to explain to him what I saw, but he was stilted emotionally and couldn't comprehend it. I would have waited longer with him but the cloud was still coming up Sixth Avenue so I kept going. There were long lines at the pay phones, which were mostly still working, desperate people trying to locate their families. I saw many cabs commandeered by Hasidim, they were yelling at other Jews on the street in Hebrew offering assistance to get them out of the area. I finally got home, all sense of safety in my beloved New York City gone. We have fighter jets flying about our heads now, F 14's and F 16's at impossible speeds circling Manhattan as if in an air race. Now when I hear a jet motor, I wait for the explosion. It is a pretty sick scene up here. The site of the towers burning and collapsing is just absolutely surreal. I'm doing cv at Tisch (our private hospital) but they sent all of us over to bellevue. It was pretty amazing. They had every big attending and all residents ready and waiting. One of the sick things was that there really weren't many true trauma patients. The er got a lot of smoke inhalation, asthma, chest pain stuff, but I was in the trauma slot all day and night, and we really only had about 8 or 9 true traumas. No one is making it out alive. All of our patients were cops and fireman. People in the building won't be found for days. All of the cops and fireman are saying they lost all their partners and squad members and that there are dead rescue workers all over. I think most of the fire chiefs and police officials are all dead. We had one fireman who came in early after having someone jump about 30 stories and land on his head. He was in arrest when he was brought in - and his buddies were the ones who brought him in. It's probably the toughest thing I've ever scene, partly because of my admiration for firefighters. My best friend sean lost his brother in law it looks like. I was worried for a while because my ex, lives one block from there, but she left her apartment about 10 minutes before it all happened. I think her apartment is gone. The whole scene up hear is just sickening. To see the national guard driving down the FDR and lexington avenue and to see all the fbi agents outside the medical examiner's office is just crazy. I wish I was a few years ahead in my training and could have done a little more, but there wasn't really much for people to do. I'll try to give you a ring when I can.
