On the morning of September 11, 2001, I was enroute to my daughter's home to visit with my grandchildren for the day. As I pulled off the road into the driveway, a bulletin came over the car radio advising that a plane had crashed into one of the towers of the WTC. Details were still sketchy. I immediately entered the house and yelled to my daughter to put on CNN, and preceeded to watch the unfolding horror with my Mother, daughter and grandchildren. One of our first thoughts was to immediately try calling my sister, who works ten blocks from the WTC. We were unable to reach her, and spent many hours on pins and needles, waiting to hear some word of her. She finally was able to contact us at 4:30 PM. She advised that she arrived in Manhattan late due to the subway delays, and was unaware of what was going on until she surfaced at street level. From her office building facing the WTC they were able to watch as scenes unfolded. She finally decided that she needed to leave her office, and walked to the nearest hospital to donate blood. The need to contact my husband and five grown children, along with my siblings in New York and Missouri was instant. The tears began to flow early that morning, and continued for many, many weeks. The heaviness in my heart was felt for many months. As a native New Yorker, growing up in the greatest city in the world was awesome. I spent quite a few years after high school working in both lower Manhattan, on both Rector St and Broad St, and in midtown Manhattan at NBC. No matter where I live, my heart will always be in my hometown, NEW YORK. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I have come to grips with my life. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in Dec 2001, spending the next 7 months going through surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatments. During that time, I made contact with many old friends from New York, and from my high school. We felt an urgency to get in touch with one another. We renewed old friendships, got caught up on each other's lives, and made promises to all meet at our 40th reunion in 2004 without fail. I have also felt an inner peace, and an awakening within my own mind. I need to live each day to the fullest. I try not to become agitated with anyone. I am more tolerant of other people. I am enjoying life. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? Apart from always remembering the lost lives, of the innocent, the rescue workers, the heroes, we should always remember how the city, the country, and the world joined together in our time of need and sorrow. We should always remember the renewed patriotism shown by our citizens, and try always to keep it as strong as it was that day, and the days immediately following the attacks. Yes, my flag has flown daily since September 11th, however, my father (a naturalized citizen, originally from Germany) instilled in his children the ideals of this great land. So to fly the flag after 9/11 was automatic, as it was each and every day preceeding the attacks. My feelings about the American Flag have never changed from the time I was a young chld. It is a beautiful flag, and it makes my heart flutter each time I see it waving in the breeze. The red, white and blue has been a part of my life from the beginning. Since 9/11, I have become known as the Flag Lady, since I have not wavered in my decision to wear my country's colors and always have with me a small American flag every day since 9/11. A coworker came in and told me someone had phoned to say that a small plane had hit the World Trade Center - a terrible accident. Soon afterwards, we heard about the second plane and like everyone, knew at once that it was a terrorist attack. But who? Middle Eastern terrorists? Homegrown American maniacs? Something else? Nobody knew. What else was going to happen? Nobody knew. I remember sitting at my desk trying to pray the Lord's Prayer, and getting stuck for about five minutes on "forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us". I had never realized before what an enormous demand that is... As it turned out, I am only another bystander...nobody closer than a friend of a friend was killed. But for a long time afterward, I was haunted by the thought of all those people who got up that Tuesday slapping their alarm clocks just like me, took a shower and got dressed just like me, grabbed some coffee just like me, went to work just like me. Oh, yes...I wore a small flag pin for several months, and as soon as I could get one had a flag on my car antenna until late June, when it began to fray. My immediate feeling about the sudden proliferation of flags was that this was a combination of national mourning and defiance...remember that back in September and October of 2001, especially as the anthrax cases continued, we had no idea how many more terrorists might be hiding among us. By early 2002, and continuing to the present, the flag became more of a symbol of the fragility and preciousness of civilization. No, I am not being some sort of stereotype of "USA perfect! Furriners no good!" jingoist...there are many other civilized countries in the world, and none are perfect...certainly we are not. But we were the ones attacked, and the people who attacked us stand for the death of civilization. My name is Matt Owens and i was in Mrs. Penhale's classroom last year when the first plane hit. we had heard of something about the twin towers so we got online to look and see. when we turned on the t.v. i saw the second plane hit the world trade center. chill bumps ran down my spine and everyone gasped we didnt know what was going to happen next. the news corresseponder that was on the television set said there was one more plane in the air somewhere over pennslyvania. i was tottaly horrified. i didnt know what was going to happen. then over the intercom i heard my name being called to check out. i went to the office where i saw my mom in tears she said the pentagon had been hit too, and as we went home we listened to the president over the radio about all the chaos going on in the united states that day. i actually thought we were going into world war 3 i was scared to death. i thought i was going to die. and i defintly thought the end of the world was near... Our freshman English teacher's television was not working, therefore we went across the hall to the sophmore English class. As we watched the replays of the first crash over again and again, unknowingly we witnessed the second crash for the first time. When we watched it we thought it was just another replay of the first crash... but we found out it was a second plane in the second tower. We watched the devastation proceed on and on for another hour or so. We continued going to classes the rest of the day, but as you can imagine we didn't get much work done. We found out about the the plane at the Pentagon. At this time a classmate of mine and her mom (the art teacher) were frantically trying to call her aunt and uncle who work at the pentagon. Thankfully it wasn't in God's plan for them to end their lives that day. It was their day off, and they didn't even go to work! No matter what anyone says, or why they say the events on September 11 happened, or what will happen next, they happened and that's that. There is no reason to be scared, God is in control! On September 11 I called him to discuss where we were going to meet for lunch - I had to come into the city for an appointment with a doctor at NYU and he was coming with me. I really didn't want to go though the security hassel in his building so we were discussing where else we could meet. Suddenly I heard him yell "Oh my God!" as the phone dropped to the desk (or floor) and this was followed by a loud sound and things falling and people screaming. My first thought was that Ray had a heart attack. He picked the phone back up and told me, "I just saw a plane hit our building. I'm O.K. but I have to go". I don't know what I said or if we even talked any more. I did try to call back a few minutes later after what he said sunk in but no one answered. I was frantic. I called my dad in Michigan - thank goodness my mom had flown in the night before to watch my 23 month old son because Ray and I were scheduled to leave for a short trip on the 12th. I don't know how I would have dealt with keeping it "together" in front of him by myself. I then called ABC news to see if they knew what had happened but got no information. Finally, the news stations began to show live pictures. This is when I thought Ray must be dead. It looked as though the plane hit right near his floor - I knew if it hit below him he wouldn't be able to get out. I can't even describe the next 3-4 hours. I just "lost it". At one point I drove to the ferry station in Atlantic Highlands (New Jersey), to try to get into the city to find Ray - the police stopped me and told me the city was closed down. I was driven home by EMS where I watched 2 WTC collapse. I really didn't think Ray could have gotten out. I think it was just over three hours before I heard from him. He called me from a Banana Republic in Seaport - they were letting people use the phones to call home. I couldn't believe he was alive! I told him the ferry was evacuating people and to get on one quick. I really didn't believe he was alive until I saw him in the Highlands and was able to put my arms around him. I can't hear the sound of an airplane without looking up to see if it is O.K. I worry about my husband every day he goes to work. Since September 11 he has been evacuated from the ferry and his place of business due to bomb threats and his place of business (The New York Mercantile Exchange) is on heightened alert for attack. I used to take my son into the city to surprise his dad for lunch - I wont think of doing that again any time soon. I can't imagine what my husband has had to deal with walking past that site every day since they went back to work on the 17th. I now have an emergency kit in the basement in case we need to evacuate quickly and I never let the gas tank in the car get low. I take notice of my surroundings more now and discuss possible senarios with my husband. He has now been though two terrorist attacks (both WTC attacks) and he's only 36. The senseless act that took so many lives - so many people with a future now gone. We don't know what we lost in all those lives. The men and women that lost their lives trying to help others. The way communities pulled together to help eachother. I have never felt so close to complete strangers in my life. The feeling that our nation pulled together as one - suddenly all the differences that we seem to fight about on a daily basis didn't matter. I received a phone call from my sister telling me that the World Trade Center and the Pentagon was being attacked. I turned on the TV around 8 am CST. I couldn't believe what I was seeing on TV. It was just unreal. Two of my children and I stayed glued to the TV until time for me to go to work at my father's Chevron station and country store. I was so shocked at what was going on and I didn't know what to expect next. Around three o'clock that afternoon the shock had to be set aside for a little while. A rumor circulated that gas prices were going up and there was going to be a shortage. I spent the next three hours continuously pumping gas trying to help the cars get through as quickly as possible. Daddy kept the store open later than usual that night. I went to bed that night physically, emotionally, and mentally exhausted. I could only guess at what tomorrow would bring. It was a very unsettling feeling. Although I was not directly involved in what was happening in New York or Washington, my heart and prayers went out to those directly involved. I am thankful for my family, for my freedom, and for those who have fought to preserve that freedom. I am thankful for our leaders, our firefighters, and our policemen. I am thankful for those who sacrificed to help others during this national crisis. America has so much to be thankful for. God Bless America. I think that September 11th should be a reminder to us that America is vunerable and we should take every precaution to protect America and its citizens. I think we should remember all those innocent lives that were lost. I think we should remember all the heroes. My youngest son attached a flag pole to our front porch and we have proudly flown an American flag since September 11th. I have always been proud to be an American and now I am more proud than ever to be an American. I was in the middle of Biology class and a kid from my class came in, saying his mother was picking him up because he was sick, but while he was on the phone he heard that a plane crashed into the WTC. I figured it was probably a suicidal person in one of those tiny propeller planes. After Biology I went to lunch and it seemed that all hell broke loose. Rumors spread like wildfire. Saying both towers of the WTC were hit by big 767 Jets and the upper halves of both towers were demolished. I heard the Sears Tower was destroyed. The mall of Washington DC was on fire, and the Pentagon was hit. I thought the pentagon story was totally rediculous. But the class after lunch the principal came onto the PA system and announced to the whole school that the Pentagon was indeed hit and both towers of the WTC were completely gone. I was horrified, angered, saddened, shocked, and a whole bunch of other feelings that I couldn't describe. I'm very patriotic and this hit me very deeply. Upon returning home from school, I watched the many hours of news coverage. September 11th, 2001 was the worst day I've ever had. I will never forget it. And my feelings toward that flag are no different than it was before, I have and will always love my country. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I had just returned home from taking my children to school. I had the morning off from my job as the Patent Assistant at the Providence Public Library. I turned on the TV to check the local weather, as it was a gorgeous late summer day and I wanted to see how much longer we could expect such weather. Instead, I was horrified to see one of the towers of the World Trade Center billowing smoke...shortly thereafter, as the world watched on our TVs, another jet smashed into the second tower. I was riveted to the TV, almost like I could not move if I had wanted. Tears were streaming unnoticed down my cheeks as I watched the devastation and the terrible loss of life unfold in living color. I prayed for those poor people as they jumped to their deaths rather than face being burned alive, and for the firemen and the police who were running as fast as they could into those buildings as the terrified people struggled to get out. In the midst of this, the reports of Washington and Pennsylvania came on. I thought of my kids, and of the kids whose parents would never again come home, and the sadness was nearly overwhelming. There were conflicting reports of what was happening, and everyone was on alert. I went to work, walking in the clear air through the beautiful downtown of Providence, and imagined the office workers and clerks, waiters and maintainence staff and financiers and tourists who had gone to their place of employee most likely very much as I was doing now, never suspecting that in a few scant hours their lives would be over or forever scarred by an act of war on a nation at peace. At work they allowed us to watch TV and make personal calls to check on our families. Staff and patrons were glued to the sets and everyone was crying. Homeless and business people, librarians and teachers and students and clerks...we were all Americans, all stricken by the insane acts against our civilians by a group who hated us for who and what we are. I believe my life has changed, mostly for the better, since September 11. I learned that being smug and secure in our far away, powerful country was not enough. That all of us must remember that we have enemies who would rejoice at our downfall. I also try to treasure every minute I'm alive, especially those spent with my precious children, my family and my friends. September 11 proved powerfully that we are not guarenteed any particular life span. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? We need to remember all those who died, the heroes among the police and fireman, but also the average joe who disappeared into the rubble. We need to remember that we are all Americans, and that our great industrial wealth, our prosperity and our power, does not make us invulnerable nor invincible. We need to teach our children to learn to be tolerant, yes...but, not to hesitate when those who hate us try to take us down and put their agendas before ours. I have always flown an American Flag on holidays. On September 11, I put up the flag and kept it, with a light on it at night, til it got stormy and icy in December. Our flag is beautiful, and it is a symbol to the world of liberty and our country. We were shaken and sad on September 11, but we will have justice against our enemies, and we will not let them break our spirit nor cause our flag to stop flying, ever. I remember sitting in 3rd period, doing class work. I belive there was a full class that day. One of the counslers came over the loud speark and said these words "Attention, Students and Staff, the north tower of the World Trate Centers has just been hit by a plane, do not be alarmed we ask that you pray for the familys of the people in there as-well for he people in the tower." That is when a big class discustion came up and we're all statarted talking. A few minutes later the same Counsler came over the loud speaker and said "Ladys and Gentalman the second World Trate Center tower has just been hit, this is terfiying and we ask that you remain calm, as school will continue." A few minutes later the loud speaker came up and said that The Pentagon has been hit, I was begining to wonder what was next as well was everyone else in the class, the teachers where in structed to remain teaching the class, but it was hard for the kids not to have a discution on it. Not to much later we where told it was a terorist attack and the whole day was terfing wondering what was going to happen next wondering if it was the Sears Tower that was next, as soon as I got home I went on the computer and I tried to find out the whole story, as to who did it or what was next. I remember finding out that it was the afgainistains that did it and thats when everyone began showing patritism. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Yes and No, I've always cared about America and I was always patriotic, but when that happened I became more patriotic, I heared a unch of stories. This has brought us closer together. Its a shame that it took something as bad as 9-11 to bring us closer together. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? That we where closer together after that, I belive that we should remember everyone that lost they're life and everyone who was friends or related to someone who lost they're lives we should remember the Firefighters, the NYPD, the Paramedics, the people in the towers, the inocent people in the plane. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was a senior in college at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, an IS major. My classes started about 10:30am but I decided the night before to get up early to hang out with my friends before class. I forgot what exact time I woke up but it was after the first tower was hit but before the second. My TV is my alarm it automatically turns on so I wake up to that. I was half asleep so I was hearing bits and pieces like terrorist, airplane, WTC so I immediately woke up. I just sat in bed staring in shock. I remember the HBO movie about the first world trade center bombing and how in the last scene of the movie the terrorist said, next time we will take them both down. That scene from the movie kept playing in my head. Then the second plane came, I could not believe I was seeing an airplane crash into the WTC! I was screaming no no no and once it hit I just started crying. I ran upstairs and my grandpa was in Chicago on a job and grandma was in the kitchen. We were just shocked and watching tv. She didn't want me to go to school but for once I wanted to go really bad, I had to be with people. Grandma drove me to school and at that time nobody knew where the president was, that was the scariest feeling ever! Plus there were rumors of more planes and nothing was clear yet. I got to school and there were still classes because it was still early but in class we talked about what happened. I just started crying again because I have friends that live in NY and had nooo idea if they were safe or not. Someone else stated how a girl in her class got a call on her cell from her mom, her mom told her her aunt was in the WTC and didn't get out. After that class I skipped my next one and went to the Union. The university was awesome, they put TV's in every hallway of the union and 6 in the big part all tuned into different stations. I wish I would have had my camera to take pictures of the other students reactions, I know what a thought hey? But remember a student union is never dead quiet like it was that day. By that time fliers were going around school saying the university was shutting down for the rest of the day. That was about noon. I went home and didn't know what to do. Our radio stations didn't play any music just the news. The rest of the day was a complete blur but that morning I will never forget. It's funny, earlier that year the movie Pearl Harbor came out and I loved the movie. I asked my grandma what it was like to live through that, I could not imagine. It has effected me because I was an International Studies major. Terrorism was more a hypothetical we studied in class, it was something that happened in other countries so we could not really understand the emotion. Class was in session for only a week and our poly sci class was discussing how pres. Bush's administration would be defined. Also my area of study was the Middle East and I had friends who were Muslim. I was trying to learn all I could and to teach my fam that they were not the stereotypes. I was in a YMCA swimming excercise class when someone came in and told the instructor that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. My first thought was that a small craft had accidentaly hit the tower. When I was leaving, a friend at the desk said that the second tower was hit by a large plane. I wanted to get sick, then and there, but rushed home to watch the television. I was numb with shock and fear and sorrow for all those whose lives seemed to be lost. I then had to retell what information I knew to two school age children, trying to to frighten them. I cried whenever I could go into another room and wanted to scream but could not because of my children. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I am often sad and depressed over the events of 9/11 even though I did not loose anyone personally. Relatives and friends managed to escape the area. At memorials and masses I find myself barely holding back tears over such a loss of life, those in the Towers and those who tried to rescue them. As much as I believe in God, I want temporal justice for those who were involved in these attacks and I mean capital punishment. The God that I believe in would never approve of such acts in His name. I've one child who will not get on an airplane again - ever. I don't blame her. Our lives will never be the same again. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? That men, in their twisted view of religion and righteousness, used the name of God to do such unspeakable acts. They must be brought to justice. The families of all who died will have no rest, no peace until justice is meted out. We should all of the victims families in our hearts and prayers, on 9/11 and beyond. We shoudl also remember that we came together in a time of extreme crisis and stood as one. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. As I look back now, September 11, 2001 was just like any ordinary day. I woke up, got ready for school, and took the bus ride to my high school. Two periods into the day I had biology. I was doing my usual classroom work when the phone rang. My substitute teacher picked it up as we all listened to her curiously. She sounded worried , but no one knew why. Immediatly, she made a short phone call and sounded relieved to put the phone down. Still, we had not found out what was going on. It was then that my teacher turned on the TV to CNN. On the bottom of the screen scrolled a message stating that the World Trade Center had been hit by an airplane. I stared up at the TV in disbelief. I couldn't handle what I was seeing. The tower was flaming and the downtown area of New York City was in total chaos. People were jumping out of the windows, running for their lives and barely escaping the falling debris tumbling down from above. Before I could take in the shock of the hit, I saw another plane hit the second tower. Now, both towers had huge flames emerging from them. I sat there in complete denial wondering how this could possibly happen. It couldn't, i thought, it was too unreal, too much like a dream or a movie. The entire day was spent watching the TV and hearing of the attack made on the Pentagon and a plane crashing in PA. Even when I believed nothing worse could happen , the two towers collapsed , one right after the first, leaving thousands dead. I was shocked, scared, and filled with fear. I felt fear for my myslf, my family and friends , and most of all, my country. It puzzled me to think why someone would want to do such a horrible thing to America and to our people. I was lucky enough to not have known anyone in the towers, on the planes, or in the Pentagon. I can imagine it being extremely difficult to cope with a loved one lost in the attacks. I think that September 11th has changed my values more than anything else. I have learned to appeciate my family, friends, and mu surroundings more than ever before. Because now I realize that all of them could be taken away from me at any moment. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think that the firefighters, policeman, and victims of 9/11 should be remembered about the attacks. These are the people that deserve the attention and remembrance of September 11th. The firefighters and policeman risked their lives to save others in need of help. Whether they survived or not, if they are dedicated to their work that much they definately deserve to be remembered and rewarded. When I first saw the plane hit the Twin Towers I had just come downstairs and saw my mom watching the news. I just stood there in awe as I watched the second plane hit. It didn't seem real, just like another action movie on TV, until the reporter came on the air and started talking about what was happening. Even when I went to school I didn't know what to think. I wasn't scared, or sad, or upset, or mad. I was just amazed at the fact that at the very moment that I was sitting in school, millions of people were fleeing for their lives in fear from the collapsing Twin Towers. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. The events of September 11 have changed my life in quite a few ways. I now have a lot more respect for people in our government, airforce, navy, marine core, police force, fire fighting system, and all other forms of protection of America. I am now aware as well of a much greater unitedness of our country. It also has made me more aware of what's going on in the world around us because I watch the news more often to see if anything new has happened. I get a bit nervous sometimes too because every once in a while fighter jets or army helicopters fly over my house and remind me that there is still a war going on. This makes me feel very lucky too though, because, while so many people were killed and/or had family and friends killed, my family, friends, and I are still alive, healthy, and together. I think we should remember the couraage of those firefighters who risked their lives in order to save people from in the Twin Towers. I flew a flag in front of my house after September 11 and put a red ribbon on the antenna of my mom's car. After September 11, my feelings about our flag are that it is not just another symbol for America, but a symbol of unity, freedom, and power within our country. I was at work (at MIT)just heading to a staff meeting, and was sending off a Birthday message to a friend (we share the birthday of 9/11). I hit send and went to my meeting, it was at that time that we heard of the acts which had occurred. We sat in the meeting, but I don't think many of us were able to concentrate after hearing the news. After the meeting I had several voice mail messages from my husband and some of my co-workers had relatives or friends that had left on the same flight the as the plane that hit the world trade center but luckily had gone the day before. I remember feeling numb and in disbelief that the events had occurred. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life has changed in many ways, I feel as if I should not be celebrating my birthday, but should be mourning for those who lost their lives as well as praying for the loved ones that are dealing with the tragic way they lost people. I know life does go on, and I try to make sure that the last words I say to my family are I LOVE YOU. I try not to go to sleep at night without resolving issues as I don't want my last thoughts or words to be said or thought in anger. It really has taught me that I need to cherish each and every day. I try not to sweat the small stuff even to the point, I will let cleaning or dishes go just to spend extra time with my husband and son...the dust and dishes will still be there tomorrow, they may not be. I think the things we need to remember most about September 11th is that many people gave their lives for their country, not even knowing they were going to do so and for some knowing they were. I also think we need to remember that the whole musilum race is not to blame. My son (who was in the third grade)got a new student a week after Sept. 11th from Pakistan and his name was Osama...many people said he should change his name..we need to stop thinking like this..this is a common name in the Muslium countries and others should not be judged or blamed for a name or any other reason..This is a time we all need to remain as one..as the new Bon Jovi song says "where we were once divided, now we stand united we stand as one Undivided"... I fly the American Flag all the time..I have one on my car and I have always valued our flag as something that was very inspirational...after Sept 11th it just made me stop and not take it as for granted as I used too. I am proud to be an American and am proud to stand as a unity for one...I also think we do need to remember that we are "One Nation Under God"...and not take that for granted either..in the end we will not be the ones to judge, but will each be judged ourselves... That tattered but sturdy clothe that I swaddled my shivering self in. I search all day for those frayed remnants of magically impenetrable protection.
