NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was at work. I work for the Internal Revenue Service in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. The first I heard of the attacks was from my wife who had not yet left for work when the 1st plane hit the World Trade Center. She called me to let me know what was happening at about the same time the 2nd plane hit the other Tower. We both were stunned !! Immediately upon hearing this I talked to some co-workers to find out if they had heard about the tragedy. We were then informed by our Supervisor to please stand by for breaking news, do not leave our building. At approximately 10:45 AM we were told to leave the buildingeveryone had the rest of the day to go home and be with and comfort their family members. I left about 35 minutes later as we had two people who are handicapped that also car-pooled to work and their rides had not as yet been notified to go home. I ended up taking these two people about 20 miles out of my way to get them home that morning (now afternoon when I got them home). Right after the tragedy security was very careful to search all employees and guests bags and person, causing delays of up to 1 1/4 hours getting into our building as they would only allow you to enter through one entrance. By the end of the 2nd week this had been relaxed and all employees were allowed to enter, after showing credentials, without a search of their bags. We are growing accustomed to the daily routine of new security procedures as time goes by. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? We must remember those people, not just Firemen and Police that performed heroic deeds on that day. We must be sure never to give up ANY of our freedoms and Rights. About a week before I started my sophomore year of college, I was driving to work at a construction sight, listening to Howard Stern. I heard of attack on the WTC, and thought, wow, he has got to be low to mention such things. I changed the radio station, only to find that they were talking about the same scenario on each radio station in my area (Janesville, WI). Could it be true? Was this really happening? I called my mother whom was already at work to talk with her, and she was just as shocked as I. As I went to work, I listened to the radio until lunch, and then I returned home, watching the terrible destruction that had fell upon lower Manhattan on that fateful morning... I am currently studying abroad in Australia, and find it hard to understand why people not from American do not understand what happened on that day. It was a day that opened my eyes, and made me realize that what I have in America is not a given, it is a privledge. Thousands have people have given thier lives so that I can live a happy and free life, and I would do the same to ensure that others could after me. It is a shame that not everyone around the world realizes how great American is, but all that matters, is that as a nation, WE realize how fortunate we are. I was at work on September 11th when I first heard someone mention that a plane had crashed into the world trade center building. I thought to myself that it was a horrible thing to happen, however, I did not even really know where or what the world trade center was. It did not cross my mind that it had anything to do with terrorism either. I continued with my work for a while as a supervisor for a customer support call center for an ISP. It did not take long until the entire building was buzzing with talk about a second building being hit, later the pentagon and the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania. After that alot of people were sure that it was related to terrorism. I was shocked to find out that the world trade center had two towers and that they were both on fire. I knew what the pentagon was and I knew how important it was to our government. I thought that America might be getting invaded on a large scale. We got a TV and turned it on in our break room to try and find out what was happening. The number of calls that we had coming in slowed down and eventually stopped because phone lines around the country were tied up from every type of traffic. I went home early this day to be with my girl friend and to await what was next. My original plans for the night were cancelled ofcourse. After seeing the footage of what happened that day it has had a lasting effect on me. The images of people leaping from the buildings was terrible. I know longer think that our country should allow its borders to be so easily infiltrated. I am also worried for the future of America and our next generations. By the same token I am determined to fight or do whatever it takes to keep America safe. I hope that Americans don't quickly forget and move on from this. I couldn't believe it, I was so scared. For the rest of that day none of our teachers could teach because they were to depressed and I don't blame it for them being depressed and worried. There is no reason for being worried at a time like that. We were all scared to see when the towers fell, I could even see it in there eyes. When the first tower fell I thought it was over, I felt miserdable and sad to see what was going on. From California: I fisrt came to know what was happening in New York when watching CNN as part of my daily routine when getting ready for work each morning.. I turned CNN on at about 5:30am (West Coast Time) and happened to be sitting down when CNN tuned to the horrific events that was just unfolding at the WTC in NY.. First it was thoguht a small plan had just hit the WTC, but from what I observed - the size of the gapping hole was to large to be a small plane.. As I sat watching the news on TV, then the second Jet hit the second tower.. I sat there confused/shocked, at first didn't understand what I was seeing.. You see horrific events happened around the World, but in the United States.? It just leaves you knumb in disbelief - this doesn't happen in our Country.. I live in the Philippines, on that evening i was watching Tv after i came home from work i happened to pass by CNN and the first thing that i saw was a live coverage of what appeared to be a fire on one of the towers of the WTC. The reporter said that there had been an accident and a plane crashed into the building. I was shocked with what I saw, I would have never imagined that airplane could ever crash in to a building. As moments passed and the reporters countinued talking about the event, the screen was showing a long shot of WTC taken from an elevated area and as they were taking a second plane appeared into view and fast approaching the second building and surely enough it crashed into it. My body felt cold. I could hardly breathe. "That was not an accident", I said to myself "Something is terribly wrong here..." It was numbing, i was facing the television and I could hardly process what was going on....two planes crashing...I asked myself "why?" tears just fell. During those moments i somehow just felt defeated. I forgot the distance all I felt the loss of human lives how could those left behind be able to face the next day? She told us that a plane had just crashed into the first of the WTC towers. The class response was disbelief but it soon passed and class continued. When the teacher found out about the second tower and the pentagon, the whole class was confused and in need of answers to questions that were on all of our minds. For the rest of the day, every classroom had a tv tuned into a news station and we all stared at it waiting for anything new that would help us understand what happened and why and who and all the questions that raced through all of our heads. When I got home, I immediately turned on the tv and watched the news all night, in disbelief of the events of the day. I know I will never forget it. I think it is very respectful that there is now a holiday to remember them and let them have their respect. Those people need to be remembered and respected for being the first casulties for the war on terrorism. The other is the way we, as a nation, responded to the attack by grouping together to become a community that doesn't pay attention to gender and race but instead nationality and we are all AMERICAN. My feelings have always been that of respect and since I was little I have understood that. It is the symbol of America and has been since we were a country. When I was in school, I learned about Betsy Ross and the maturity of the stars on the flag as new states were added. I also learned that it was important enough that you aren't allowed to touch it to the ground and if this happens, it needs to be burned. After September 11th, the flag has been the symbol to me and all people that we are one nation, under God, indivisible and we will always win. It was all over on T.V, on the radio, in the newspapers. It seemed almost like the whole world was mouring, watching helplessly as the attacks continued. People fell apart in greef and worry. There were two things that particularly stuck to me. One is how the people in the planes must have felt, and what was going on up there, bravery and heroics certainly needs to be accounted as one thing that hppened. The second thing that stuck was that all over, the best way to tell something terrible had happened was the look on peoples faces, that was probably the most terrifing of all. One thing that I have noticed is that there seems to be so much more coverage on the bad things that happen in America. It is so much harder to realize that really bad things happen every day. But one good thing about all this is that it has opened our eyes and made us realize so many things we wouldn't have. Of people volunteering to pull dead or alive bodys from the tumbled buildings, and ash. And mostly the panic and the hurry to try and reach the people still stuck in the tumble ashes of The World Trade Towers. I witnessed the September 11, 2002 Tragedy via radio enroute to a business meeting in Downtown Chicago. The first Air Craft had exploded in the World Trade Tower and few details were available. Approximately thirty minutes later, I arrived at the Aon Building and witnessed the second crash via television monitor. The buidling was evacuated. I immediately phoned my Husband, Mother, Daughter and Uncle to pray and share thoughts about our grief. As I walked toward Michigan Avenue, I was moved by the kind words expresssed by our citizens and offers to share cell phones with complete strangers. I we did not have a large American Flag at the time. I purchased a stone Cross and placed it on my front porch. It remains there as a remembrance and source of strength. I live on Staten Island, and don't go to the city that much, but on this day I had to go to the VA Hospital in Manhattan for a check up. I took the Staten Island Ferry at 8:00 in the morning. So around 8:25am I'm on the other side, that means Manhattan, and because I'm early I don't ruch into the subway station. So I smo0ke a cigarette and walk up towards the subway station at City Hall. I remember drinking my cup off coffee, looking up and telling myself, man this plane is fluing low. The next thing I saw was the plane hitting the first tower. And if this wasn't bad enough, the other plane hid. I made my way out of this area, running for the clouds of dust and debris. I made my way up town, towards 9th Ave and 45th Street, I use to live in this area, and I thought it will be save, for watever is going on. Till today, what is almost 11 monthts after 9-11, I still don't know how I got there, it is a complete blackout for me. I lost good friends ofmine in this attack, and there is not one day in my life that I don't think about them, or all the other people that diede in this attack. Our last stop before returning home was New York City. We were debating on whether or not to stay for another night. This was Monday, September 10, 2001. Something kept telling me not to stay so I finally decided that we had to go because of school in the morning. So after a few more hours of walking through the city we started our trip home. The next morning I made it to school. After my first class I walked over to the bookstore. I was talking to friends in line when we heard on television that there was some sort of explosion at the trade center in New York. I was glued to the television. Then, while watching the broadcast, we seen the second plane hit. We were all silent. All that raced through my mind is that my entire family and I had just returned home from there. What would have happened if we would have stayed? Then, we heard of the pentagon and then the plane going down in our very own state not far away at all. I called home to see if everyone knew what was happening. Not to long after school was released for the day. I listened to the radio on the ride home. I was in shock. During the drive they mentioned the Millennium Hotel being destroyed. Tears filled my eyes, because this is where we would have stayed. My decision may have saved my families lives and my own. I am very thankful that I had school the next morning. My emotions were so mixed up. The next morning I called the help line in NYC. I wanted to see if there was anything that I could do to help. They took my contact information and said that they would get back to me. I found out that they needed my help the next day in school. I notified my instructors that I would be absent for a while. Yes and No... I used to take stuff for granted all the time. Since 9-11, I have learned to appreciate more. I have become more sensitive and emotional. On Spetember 13th I arrived in New York City to volunteer. I will be affected forever but I will never regret what I did for that short period of time volunteering. I came to realize that our country is full of loving, supporting, caring individuals from all walks of life. the people that I met while volunteering will never be forgotten by me. I woke up on tuesday September 11, 2001 to a crystal clear day. The conditions were perfect and the ocean was blessing us with a "September Session". I grabbed my board and jumped in the water. At 8:30 I took my last wave in, I was already late. It was a heavy sand barrel and I remember a loud thump as the wave closed out. My adrenalin was rushing and I had a perfect morning surf buz going. While ironing my suit I turned on the morning news to watch the first plane hit the World Trade Center in disbelief. Then the second plane and then the third plane. In my mind, all I could think was "what the hell is going on?" I didn't know what to do. Growing up in Connecticut, I knew a lot of people that worked in New York including my dad. Was he in New York today? I truly felt sick. The day was the most unnerving and unsettling day of my life. It is so sad to remember all of the people who have suffered. Everyone in my family is safe and I am grateful for this. Many surfers from New York and New Jersey were late for work on September 11th because of the surf. I am also thankful for this. I live in Nashville, Tennessee, so I witnessed the events of September 11, 2001 from a distance, via TV and other media, like most Americans. This is what I remember most vividly from that day and the few days that followed: It was a brilliant late-summer day; the unrelenting heat that marks a Nashville summer had begun to die off, and the morning was crisp and clear. My wife was away on a business trip, and I remember standing in our driveway at 7:30 Central time, and saying to no one in particular, "Man, what a nice day it's going to be," and then feeling somewhat silly for talking to myself about the weather. I listen to NPR news every morning on the way in to work, and I can recall the exact spot along my route where I was sitting in my car as I heard the first news report of a plane crashing into the World Trade Center. The reports were sketchy at first, and my first thought was of the crash of a B-25 into the Empire State Building decades earlier. I can still remember some of the events that featured prominently in the news that day, before everything shifted into disaster-coverage mode--the President was in Florida at a school, in an appearance designed to highlight his education policy. The announcers continued gamely to present the news they had scripted for that morning, but by the time I got to work, a little after 8:00 Central, their focus had shifted completely to the crash, and I seem to remember that there were already reports of other planes unaccounted for. (I could look up the chronology of the other three crashes, but I am trying to recount what I experienced.) I turned on the radio in my office, and heard the reports of a fire at the Pentagon, a second crash at the WTC, and then what was initally mentioned as possibly a "normal" plane crash in Pennsylvania. Someone hauled a TV into my wife's office and we gathered around to watch the news coverage--permanently set to CBS, because this was the only station we could get. The news web sites stayed clogged with traffic much of the day. I remember seeing the live shot of both towers burning, and commenting that the towers were engineered to stand a thousand years, and that this would probably render them unusable, but that they would stand. Seconds later, the south tower collapsed, and I initially refused to believe it, thinking it was the facade of the building. I went back to my desk and tried to reach my wife, who was not in any danger on her trip; she was at a business meeting in a large auditorium, and when I reached her cell phone, the organizers had scrapped their video presentation and put a network news feed on their big screen onstage. The attendees, some of whom were from the New York area, watched the collapse of the towers live in the auditorium, on a screen perhaps 12 feet high. The opening presentation was abandoned, and many of the attendees left immediately to try to find a way home--most using their rental cars, since air traffic had been grounded. I remember driving home in a stupor that afternoon; traffic seemed more sedate and solemn, with everyone intent on getting home but too depressed to drive with their usual aggression. There were no contrails in the sky, but I remember looking up and seeing a solitary plane, flying very high and very fast in an eastward direction--almost certainly a military aircraft. The next few days, before my wife and her colleagues returned home on a chartered bus, are a blur. I slept about three hours a night, spending most of my time in front of the TV, right next to my computer, when I was at home, trying not to miss any piece of information. I went to work, but not much got done. We had moved back to Nashville from Winthrop, Massachusetts, about a year before. If you have flown into Boston's Logan airport, you have seen Winthrop--it is a small town just north of Boston, on a peninsula between Boston Harbor and the ocean. One side of Winthrop, the street I lived on, in fact, faces directly across a narrow stretch of water to one of Logan's runways. In the time I lived there, I had becone accustomed to the noise and activity of the airport; in fact, when I moved, it had to get used to sleeping in a quiet room without jet engines nearby. When I heard that the two planes that hit the WTC had come from Boston, several thoughts raced through my mind: 1) Had I not moved, I would have been standing at my kitchen window, drinking coffee, getting prepared for work, and watched the two planes take off. 2) I would have had the eerie experience of living right across from the airport and seeing the rows of silent airplanes sitting there for days on end, the first non-weather-related shutdown of Logan in its history, probably. 3) The passengers were mostly ordinary Bostonians, much like I had been a year earlier. I woke up, pretty refreshed and in good spirits ready to go to class. I had a pretty full schedule so I knew the morning would be my only time to relax and catch my breathe. I caught the early bus going into the city, which meant not only would I have a comfortable ride in, I'd be able to have breakfast, a rarity for most New Yorkers. The normal people were on the private bus service that ran along 65th Street in Bensonhurst. It was more expensive than the public bus service, but it was worth it. Everyone on the bus worked downtown, mostly women who didn't like taking the train. The ride was quite uneventful and rather quick that morning, so when the bus stopped in front of Century 21 on Church St., and I saw I still had 25 mins. until my first class I got off the bus. I figured I would treat myself. I crossed the street and entered what was the World Trade Center complex. I looked at the Krispy Kreme store and opted for something a little less sweet. So I took the escalated downstairs to The Mall. The Mall at the WTC was fabulous. Great high-end stores, fast-paced well-dressed business people speed walking to their offices with coffee in hand. At the entrance of one of the Towers sat a little coffee shop with windows full of stuffed animals and incredible muffins. Now anyone who knows me knows the stuffed animals were enough for me to want to eat there, but throw in a good blueberry muffin and wild horses couldn't hold me back. I got my coffee and muffin, sat down and went in my bag. I realized I forgot my PDA at home, which as you'll see later on, was my own personal miracle. I sat there reading over my notes for my Political Science class and internally debated whether I actually wanted to attend the session that day. Boom! I stopped for a second and heard what I thought was a car backfiring. I was close enough to West St. to assume that's all it was. Then I stopped and thought maybe something bad happened in the train station. The WTC was the meeting ground of the New Jersey Transit PATH train system, as well as numerous MTA trains. With that people started to say there was a fire in one of the tower and then what I would dispute and later find out I was wrong - a plane hit the building. With in minutes the mall was being evacuated. When I got to street level, I looked up and to my dismay, a tower was indeed on fire; papers and debris was falling; and you could here loud banging on the ground (what I would much later realize were people). I crossed Church St. and stood in front of Century 21 with numerous others watching the fire blaze and questioning the origin. And with that, I stood in fear watching a plane fly directly into the second tower, creating a huge fire ball and instinctively making me run the few blocks to my school. People were crying and speculating about the events happening a few seconds away from us. We looked over to our neighbor, the Brooklyn Bridge, and saw cars stopped and people getting out and starring at history in the making. I stood directly outside my school. Numerous students and professors all stood there watching in horror as our Twin Towers were in flames. We watched debris falling and even from where we were, we could see people hanging white cloths out their windows. We stood there, some speechless, others like me, running through our heads everyone and anyone we knew who could or would be in those two buildings or the neighboring buildings. I prayed my boyfriend, who would be driving home at that time, was okay. I hoped he didn't change his schedule and go get a haircut, across the street in the World Financial Center. I wondered if many of the women of my bus, most of which got off with me in front of Century 21 and walked into the WTC complex, were okay. However, what happened next was nothing I could have ever imagined and unfortunately re-live every single day - the first tower came down. Instantly everyone, who up to that moment were just fellow Pace students, became shoulders to cry on and took the temporary place of the family I wanted to be with. For the next hour or so, Tuesday morning, felt like the end of the world. You couldn't see in front of your face because the smoke was so thick. We ran inside. The guards refusing to let the students leave the building let anyone and everyone who came to our doors in. We just stood there in horror. One woman came in and passed out right in front of a few of us. We were told not to stand near the glass or the doors, because we didn't know what was going on. The dorms were evacuated and the faculty and staff tried to herd the student body into the gym. I was covered in dust and couldn't breathe very well. A few girls took me into the bathroom and helped me clean up and got me water to help clean my throat. I was, for lack of a better word, hysterical. I was already on the verge of depression, due to the endometriosis, so witnessing those towers coming down, didn't help much. I couldn't help but cry - thinking about all the people in those buildings and the fear I might know them; the fear that my boyfriend was somewhere in the area. Just scared, because at that point we still didn't know what was happening. The bathroom became my home base for the next 2 hours. Occasionally, the group of girls who also decided the bathroom was where they wanted to stay, would go outside to get more news. One girl had a radio and gave us whatever information that came over the airwaves. In the first few hours, a lot of misinformation was being spread - we heard planes hit the Statue of Liberty; the Sears Tower; the White House and then the one that made me go into a shock - The Empire State Building. For those of you who didn't know, at that time my sister worked on the 24th floor of the Empire State building. I left the bathroom in search of a working phone, since my cell phone wasn't working. I stood on line for about 25 mins. and called my mom, who else? She was definitely happy to hear from me. I assured her I was okay and in one piece. I then started to ask about how everyone was and if by chance she heard from Eddie? She let me know he spoke with a few times and he was home - safe and sound. She said that there were only two other planes (not the 8 we had originally heard), one hit the Pentagon and the other went down in Pennsylvania. She also told me my dad's uncle was in the building and his wife hasn't heard from him. (His remains were found and buried in early 2002.) I felt the same feeling I felt before, the fear and pain. I let her know that as soon as I could leave I would, but I didn't know where I'd be going because I didn't know the getting to Brooklyn situation, but she told me her friend said I could stay with him if I can't get home. For next few hours are a blur. I remember going outside for a little while and smoking a cigarette. I also remember getting something to eat. I sat in the cafeteria, watching T.V. and ran into others students I knew, asking how they were and catching up. I also wanted to make sure they all had places to go, because the school was evacuating the dorms. While I was in the cafe we met up with others who came into the school, police officers, injured individuals (NYU Downtown is directly across the street from Pace and it was used as temporary triage center) and then the most beautiful family came in. They looked like tourists but I wasn't interested in where they were from, I was interested in the little girl. She had a cut on her head, a minor surface wound but it was bleeding. The father was taking care of the other 2 children with them and the mother was trying to distract the daughter from the blood, but it wasn't working. I asked the mom if she needed anything, and she told me the daughter freaks out at the slight of blood and she didn't want the daughter anymore upset. So I started to talk to the little girl. At first she didn't talk to me, practicing "the stranger rule" her parents taught her, but her mom said it was okay and she let me know she was Carol Ann and she was 5 years old. I had her attention, because she thought I had nice hair. =) Her mom started to clean the wound when Carol asked, "Whats my mom doing?" I said the first thing I could think of, "Well, since it's so hot out there she's trying to cool you off. That's all. No biggie." And like all children, she moved on to a different subject. At around 3pm a few of us had enough and just wanted to go home. We heard they were letting people cross the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Pace guards were letting people leave the building. I wasn't thrilled about having to cross the bridge; I had never walked across the bridge before and I didn't want that day to be my first time. So I was relieved when we saw that the city had buses going back and forth on the bridge so that people didn't have to walk. When we got to Brooklyn, we were greeted by hundreds of people handing out water and asking if we were ok. We saw first hand how this horrible day brought the absolute best out of New Yorkers. We walked to Court St. and President St. where I called Eddie and asked if he could pick us up and he agreed. We went into a little restaurant, ate lunch and waited. By the time we were done, Eddie was outside. He dropped the other two girls off, and took me to my mom's. As soon as I walked in I went into my brother's room and was greeted with a huge hug and kiss from Robert. I proceeded to the deck where I noticed the dust from the city had traveled all the way there, and I lost it. I started to cry and was thankfully interrupted by my dad. We went inside and watched the T.V., where we all sat and saw tower 7, which was empty, collapse. A few people called while I was there asking how everyone was. Only one phone call really upset me, but that's a whole other story. After a couple hours there, I went home and didn't leave for the next week. My school didn't open for a few weeks, but when it did, I just couldn't handle being downtown. Oh, what about the PDA I forgot that day... My boyfriend and I shared our first kiss at the Top of the World - Observation Deck of Twin Towers. So for our anniversary, I had made reservations at Windows on the World. I wanted an exact table and the woman I spoke with said it could be done. My PDA read for Sept. 11th, 2001 - "WOTW pick out table." My forgetting might have very well saved my life. In one year the world has changed and it will never be the same again. Lives were lost. Hearts were broken. Futures were stolen. Hatred caused babies to lost parents, and parents to lose their babies. An unforgettable mixture of sadness and resolve filled the air, and we were put to the greatest test of our generation. We stood in the face of those who hate this country, shoulder to shoulder with an unwavering feeling of unity. Through the fire and the dust our United States of immigrants became a family of Americans. We brought water to those who were thirsty. Food to those who were hungry. Faith to those who felt alone. We became familiar with thousands of victims and their personal journeys. We each hold a special place in our hearts for those who simply did their job and those who became heros in the sky. That day, when millions of us left our homes, we never fathomed such a tradegy, and that night when thousands didn't return home, we still couldn't understand. And for many of us, myself included, we may never fully understand the events of September 11th, 2001. However, like everyone else who witnessed the day unfolding, whether in person or on television, the memories of that day will live on. The memories of the victims will live on. The memories of the oneness felt across this land will live on. The unsung heros will live on. In our hearts for years to come, we will wake up every morning and take time to reflect and say a prayer. We need to look back at all we've lost and look forward to all we still have to achieve. We need to take stock in what we have been blessed with and remember that tomorrow is not a guarantee. We need to tell those we love, that we love them. We need to make our dreams come true and follow in the brave footsteps of the men and women who have come before us. We need to look at our neighbor as a sister or brother, and not as a stranger. We need to wake up each morning and continue with our lives, because anything less is accepting defeat. We are a strong and courageous generation. We were put to an extraordinary test, and we will pass it. We owe to those who unwillingly lost their lives on 09.11.01 but most of all we owe it to ourselves. As a result of 9/11, I started to experience panic attacks. I was put on Paxil and Xanex for four months. I didn't go back to school in the fall because of the panic attacks. I also started to experience increased pain due to the endometriosis, which I was told because of stress. I went through 2 periods after that faithful Tuesday. The first was that I watched everything I could about Sept. 11th, all the footage, interviews and documentaries. The second was I couldn't see anything regarding 9/11 without losing control of my breath and crying. That day didn't only affect me physically and mentally it helped me get my affairs in order. It made me stop worrying so much about the little things and focus more on the big picture. It helped me realize life is insanely precious and I don't let petty people bother me as much. I try not to take my family and I let them know I love them whenever I can. I try to be the bigger person is arguments, and I take the higher ground. It helped me take stock, you know? I think a lot of people had the same realizations, it's just sad such a horrible event had to wake us up. Here I am now, August 2002, and I'm going through the 3rd period I guess you could say. I try to watch anything on it, but I don't get as upset. I get understandably sad, but don't always cry. This past March, one of the major television networks showed a video of the events by two journalists who were documenting firemen. My friend Kristy and I sat and watched the whole thing, both us of tearing up every now and then, but not balling... which was a great improvement. Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? Yes. It was a small flag, but it was a flag none the less. My feelings haven't changed about the flag though. I always looked at the flag as a victory. It symbolized the courage and strength of those who came before us. It always shined through as a symbol of freedom. Showed the individuality of each state, but the unity as well. It shows what we came from - 13 colonies to who we are now, 50 states, and it continues to grow. What did change, in regards to the flag was it just took on another symbol - resolve! And the memoriable photo of the three firemen at Ground Zero, is a perfect example. Just a few minutes after I woke up, but before I got out of bed, my mom came into my room and told me a plane had flew into the World Trade Center. Not knowing anything about the twin towers and what they were used for, I got up and watched the news in my parents' room. I saw everything (involving the WTC's) live from just after the first plane hit, to the collapse of the south tower. At my school bus stop, I learned of the attack on the Pentagon. Because my school said nothing about what was happening that day, I only heard of the second collapse and the crash in Pennsylvania when I returned home. Because of September 11th, I have learned so much more about our country and the freedom we are guaranteed. I found out how brave our nation's heroes are. The real heroes who will sacrifice their own life in an attempt to save another's are the people are help keep our country together. I think what should be remembered about 9/11 is that terrorists who tried to change America forever... succeeded. Now we, as a nation, are stronger, more patriotic, and unified than before. Although I myself did not fly an American flag, I do see it differently now. The flag, to me, once symbolized America as an independent country, but now means so much more. A teacher came and told me what happened at the WTC.I just couldn't believe it.We watched it on the television and then we heard where this plane crashed in Shanksville. Which is just a few miles from our school. This was so hard to believe.Parents.children,teachers just couldn't believe this happened so close to home. We prayed for the people that were involved at the WTC and for their families. And for Flight 93 these people were true heroes.God Bless them and their families.
