<text>I will never forget, Tuesday, September 11, 2001. What a day, I remember I was running late to work that morning, and was just driving along, when all of the sudden, they interupted my the music that was playing on the radio to say that something had just crashed into one the of World Trade Centers. I was in total shock, wondering what really happened. I arrived to work, and was getting to start my daily routine, when my friend instant messaged me to ask me if I had heard what happened, she then said, "oh my gosh, another one hit the other tower." I immediately turned on my office radio and tried to go onto any news website possible. I guess everyone was trying to do that as well, becuase I kept getting "page cannot be displayed." Finally, I got into msnbc.com and was reading. Not too much longer, I heard that another plane hit the pentagon-chills went up my spine and I remember everyone in our office telling each other all the stories they had heard on the different radio stations. I tried calling my parents who work for the US Government in Washington DC to see what was going on, but all circuits were busy. I tried over and over to call them, but still was not able to get in touch. I remember feeling very scared, for me, my parents, and everyone else in the United States. My boss informed us that he was letting everyone leave early due to what happened. You see, I work in Clinton, MD and Andrews AFB is not too far away, only a mile or two down the road, we were all afraid we might be next. We all got in our cars and drove home. I remember right as I was stopping at a traffic light, an announcer on the radio station said that one of the towers had collapsed. I arrived home later that morning, and just stared at the tv all day long, I recorded a whole day of news from different stations. I remember all day long my grandmother, other family relatives, and my friends calling me to make sure me and my family were okay.</text>

<text>I was on Braddock Road, heading to George Mason University, when the first plane hit. On the radio station, it sounded like a small (propellor) plane had hit, so I went over to WTOP to listen to more info. By the time I had reached Mason, they were saying that another plane had hit. I chalked it up to confusion over the events and parked.

I went to the West Building to type up my Spanish homework for my 10:30 class and was on AOL IM, chatting with a good friend who lives in southern Virginia, who told me that the Monument and Pentagon were hit. Again, I chalked it up to
confusion, because no one was saying a thing about the Monument.

Right after clicking on print, I opened my email account and discovered an email from my uncle. The subject line scared me, as it was then that I knew the Pentagon had been hit:

From : Uncle Bill
To : Erin
Subject : Is John ok?
Date : Tue, 11 Sep 2001 10:03:08 EDT

Erin, Was your father working at the Pentagon today? We are all very concerned. Please contact Grandma or me ASAP to let us know if John is OK. Love, Uncle Bill

I ran out of the West Building and tried to make a call on the payphone there, but the lines were busy. It was now 10:25 and I needed to get to class.

When I arrived upstairs, people were crying and drawing pictures on the board, outlining what had happened. "We'll be hit next," they were saying, "because of our location."

The students in my class were wives of government employees, members of the military, and all of us were scared. Our teacher said she couldn't cancel class
but if we wanted to try to make a phonecall, we were more than welcome to go in and out of the classroom to do so.

After a dozen attempts, I was able to reach my Dad. And it was only then, after he assured me that he was fine, that the irony of it struck me -- my Dad, the structural engineer with government contracts, had just finished that section of the Pentagon 2 weeks prior to the attacks. 2 weeks earlier and he might have been there the day the plane struck.

I remember trying to send an email from home later, b/c our answering machine was full of questions from family and friends from around the country, but I couldn't access the Internet from home, as all phone lines were busy. So I went
to a local library and used their Internet to do so. And I wished I had saved that email, as well, as it was the only communication we had with our family and friends in the time immediately following the attacks.</text>

As I turned on the television, I was confused as to the fictional movie I was watching. Only after seeing the second plane hit, did I realize that I was watching a life altering event happening. As I watched the news coverage of all the attack sites, I was deeply, I don't know if affected is the right word, about the losses being suffered and the bravery being displayed. One of the things that I remember most was the CEO of Canter-Fitzgerald realizing that 90% of his company had ceased to exist.</text>

            <elementText elementTextId="528543">
<text>My parents rarely spend the night at my house. It's almost as if someone of a higher power wanted them to stay over on the night of September 10th. We were all together the next morning enjoying our coffee, sending the kids off to school, my Dad watching CNN as he does first thing every morning, and then the unimaginable happened. As we watched in horror the burning of Tower 1 we sat in disbelief knowing that people were in there and on the ground surrounding the area. Before we could even speak, the second plane hit Tower 2 right in front of our eyes. My Dad let out a horrible deep groan that I'd never heard before. I was very nervous and felt the adrenaline come over me because I knew deep in my heart that my cousin was in there and was probably trying with all his might to get out of Tower 1. My Mom didn't know that he worked on the 105th floor and I didn't want to tell her right at that time that her brother's son was in there. The first thing I did was call my brother's wife to see if he called her to say he was okay. She said that he was safe at his Wall Street office but that he was on his way to the towers to check on my cousin. Knowing that my brother was alive, I then called my cousin's wife to see if she had heard from him, she hadn't heard anything yet but would call me back as soon as she did. I knew I wouldn't get that call. At that moment something in my heart just died and that's when I knew it was time to tell my Mom that her nephew worked at Cantor Fitzgerald. The look on her face was the saddest look I'd ever seen. She couldn't speak or cry, it was a look of total shock and disbelief. Thank God were were all together that morning. I don't think the outcome of my parent's health would have been the same had they been alone. She always loved her nephew like a son even more so after his parents passed away. The first thing she did say that morning was that she was thankful that her brother didn't have to see what was happening. The tower then collapsed. A wave of nausea came over me thinking that my brtother was now at the towers trying frantically to look for my cousin. So many people in there, so many people down below. This was no accident. We know that New York is somebody's target. The panic that was setting in was overwhelming. I called my brother's wife again to see if she heard from him. No word. Nothing. All we could do is wait and call hotlines and hospitals. The second tower falls. I couldn't take it anymore. I got in the car and pulled my kids out of school. I wanted them home with me. I wanted us all to be together. My head was spinning, no tears, telling my 7 and 8 year old that everything was fine and I just wanted them home with me. It was hours later that my brother returned to his home completely covered in toxic ash from head to toe, splintered pieces of glass in his face, eyes so red and coughing his insides up. He could not speak, he could not hear. He had a blank stare. He threw out his suit and his shoes, closed the bedroom door and did not come out for days. By the time he did come out, he learned that along with his cousin, 62 friends had been murdered. Many were the guys we grew up with in Staten Island, so many were the firefighters he played football with that told him to turn around and go home when they saw him trying to get closer. Many were his old co-workers and his Thursday night drinking buddies. Thinking back and telling my story is bringing that same nausea back again. It was the saddest day of a lot of people's lives, not just mine.

<text>My day started the same. I work in a Miltary Entrance Processing Station and reported for work at 0515 -central time. I was sick that day and left work at 0730. I drove the gate at Little Rock AFB at about 0755. Nothing seemed out of place. I got to my home on the base about 5 minutes later. My husband got me something to drink, some cold medicine and turned on the TV. I said "Oh my the World Trade Center is on fire!" Then we started hearing what the commentary was saying about the planes hitting both towers and then the replay....I had planned to spend the day lying in bed sleeping, instead I was glued to the events that unfolded before me on my 55 inch television. I couldn't tear myself away. I cried, I got angry. I was confused. I was frightened. I answered phone calls from loved ones concerned that I may have to go to war. I told my children, made them watch the horror. The horror. </text>

I have an overwhelming feeling that this is far from over. I also feel that for all our military strength and heightened awareness that we are not going to be able to stop that other shoe from dropping....</text>

I was sitting in study hall at school when one of my teachers came into the room crying . They then told the class what had happened . There where very few of us i think who actually grasped the consept of what was going on. To me it felt like a thousand knives being shoved into my chest and i did not know how to express myself so i just sat silent for the rest of the day. Until i got home and I just sat down on my chair in the living room and watch the T.v. and watched what was going on until early morning.</text>

<text>This is a day that will live in my thoughts and heart forever. I received a call from a friend, waking me up that morning. She was asking me what I though.. scared as every American. Turning on CNN I was in total shock. Just a few minutes before the second plane hit the WTC, I saw it all unfold. While I live in Atlanta, GA I was distanced from the events.. Still I felt like it was in my own back yard. Living in the city of the busiest airport I normaly see 20-30 planes on their final aproach, 24 hours a day. It was so surreal for two days not only seeing the lack of planes in the air but not hearing that noise that has become such a normal part of life that I never usually even notice. Well, that is till that day. I will never forget that when the planes began to take to the sky again.. everyone just stoped what they were doing. Stood still, staring at the sky. A little fearful yes, but more than anything proud that Americia was getting back on her feet. We might have been shaken but we stand with our face to the wind and say " you might shake us, you might make us loose our footing for a short moment in time but YOU WILL NOT BLOW US DOWN!!!!!!!!" May God forever bless America and may we forever be proud of the country we are so fortunate to live in, and never fail to protect our freedom!

<text>i've always respected the flag but i think that 9-11 gave it a new meaning.. a new importance after the attacks. the same night of the attack i put an Amreican flag on my car. my dad had one on his and my mom on hers. we wore red white and blue all week. the flag represents freedom and it always has, but i think now more than ever i see the flag as a sign of unity. it's similar to our own "American gang". no one messes with us and we all proudly wear our colors. America is closer together now more than ever.</text>

<text>I was at home with my two children (then ages 1 & 3) and we were watching Barney on PBS. My phone rang and it was my friend Lisa telling me that I needed to turn on the news. I was a little annoyed as I hadn't completely woken up yet and told her I couldn't that the kids were engrossed with Barney but she insisted. Something in her voice told me to do it and to hell with Barney. I turned to NBC just in time to see the replay of the 1st tower being hit. I was completely mortified - it was so surreal. Approximately 3 minutes after I turned on the news, they came on and said that the 2nd tower had been hit. At that point, nobody knew exactly what was going on. I remember listening to the news on the tv in the living room and the bedroom on two different stations and they were saying there were possibly two more airplanes that had been hijacked. I remember calling my husband at work (he works at Love Field in Dallas) and telling him he needed to leave and come home right then. I was concerned with his safety due to his work place. They had closed down the airport but he couldn't leave. I have never been so terrified as I was that day. I didn't want to take my son to preschool. I didn't want my family out of my sight. I remember watching as the towers collapsed and thinking "surely everyone got out" not knowing the magnitude of the situation.</text>

<text>I work several blocks from the World Trade Center. I remenber the morning was crystal clear and very comfortable. Because I work several floors under ground I rely on others for reports such as weather and events. That morning my wife called from the New Jersey Turnpike to tell me that she could see that a plane had crashed into the WTC. I went to the internet to check out the information. At that point a fellow who worked for me arrived and said that he had seen a second plane hit the center. I indicated that they were probably just small aircraft. He ssemed to be in shock....no thay weren't he said. They were large planes. At this point members of my staff ( approx 75 ) started getting telephone calls from concerned relatives. Semi -panic set in. I told everyone that it would be better to remain below rather then exit to the street. Some didn't listen. Later in the morning people from the street started to make their way down to our location because thay had heard that we had emergency kits. I had them settle in an empty conference room and had water and soda brought to them. Needless to sya, the day proved to be very confusing. I didn't exit the building until approximately 3:00p.m . I was amazed at the smell and soot covering everything. Normally I wouldn't use any aids, but this time a put on my mask. It was that bad. I can remenber standing on the back of the Staten Island ferry and looking a the WTC location. I couldn't believe that it was no longer there. For days after everything was rather surreal. Troops guarding the buildings and streets. </text>

<text>I remember that morning so clearly... I was on the drive into work from downtown Cleveland, OH, to Independence. For some strange reason, I was listening to the Howard Stern Show. I normally am offended by his show, so am not quite certain why I happened to be on that station. Anyway, all of the sudden, I heard brief profanity, and heard Howard Stern screaming that a bomb had gone off in one of the towers, and that he could feel it. He had someone immediately on the air that lived in Battery Park, who had a direct view of the towers. That person was screaming that the 'towel-heads' had set off a bomb. I was immediately confused, and turned to NPR to see if this was a joke, or if it was real. Each station in Cleveland that had NPR was simply playing classical music - no one was reporting on any bombings.

I continued flipping back and forth between the chaos on the Howard Stern show, and the classical music on NPR, convinced that this was one of Stern's jokes. Then, at last, NPR caught wind of the news, and I was immediately aware that it was true - We all thought a bomb went off in one of the Trade Center towers.

I immediately tried to call everyone I could to wake them up or get them in front of a TV. I had much difficulty getting through as all of the cellular lines were clogged and making a phone call was nearly impossible. I woke my parents up in Destin, FL, and told them to quickly turn on the TV. As I listened to CNN through the phone, I heard them report that they thought it was an airplane, not a bomb.

I reached the office to find all of our employees glued to the television in the conference room. One of our top salesmen was in tears - his sister and brother-in-law just got back from their honeymoon, and they both worked in the first tower to get hit. As I set my attache down and watched the screen, the second tower burst into flames. I ran to my desk, grabbed my phone book and all the work I needed, and headed back to the conference room to excuse myself for the day. As I stood there talking to everyone, making sure everyone was in touch with their loved ones and giving everyone the option to go home for the day, The Pentagon was hit.

At this point, I went back home and glued myself to the television to watch the rest of the day unveil, horrifyingly, in front of my eyes. My brother and nephew came over, as well as a number of friends, and we all huddled together in the family room for the entire day. Without saying much to each other, we made meals and watched the news. Our biggest fear was that the airlines crashing was only the beginning. As we watched the towers fall over and over again, we each were anticipating the breaking news of another catastrophe, another attack. The fact that it didn't come gave us minimal hope that some semblance of the life we once knew could indeed come back. We were wrong. Life has changed forever.</text>

<text>Since that day, I have a constant awareness now that I never used to have - one that states that I am not safe. Just this past summer (2003), we had the largest black-out in the history of the United States. 1/4 of the country was without power for a number of hours - some cities, like mine, for days. And, as I drove to the office initially thinking it was a local outage due to air conditioners, something was telling me that just wasn't right. As I learned through NPR that it was a better portion of the northeastern United States, my first thought was another terror attack. I turned around and went home to wait for more information. I wonder - if 9/11 had not happened, how would I have reacted differently? Would I have continued driving to work at 4:35pm that day, assuming it was just a technical glitch? I wonder...</text>

Showing the image over and over again, it shock me. Tons of questions went over my mind and I was scared to fly back to the US in October. When I came back there were on every house a flag of the United States and people were only mentioning the attack. </text>

<text>On Sept 10th I had turned 36. My wife was just entering her 9th month of pregnency with our second child. Everything was going as planned and then came Sept 11th. I work about 100 yards from the twin towers in the World Financial center and it sits between the two towers on West St. That morning was a clear and beautiful day as I started my treck to work from Jersey City, which is directly across the water from downtown NY. I jumped on the train to the WTC at 6:30am and little did I know it would be my last time in the World Trade Center. As I was having my coffee I heard this huge explosion and I went to the window to see what had happened. I was on the 17th floor in the world financial center and the view from the window of the WTC is unbelieveable. When I went to the window i was not prepared for what I was about to see. I think it took me all of ten seconds to get to the window after the explosion to see what was happening. No fire engines had arrived yet and the fire was really raging. The television behind me was saying a small plane had hit the north tower but they were not seeing what I was seeing. All of a sudden I started to see faces in the windows that the people had broken. These people were trying to get some clean air to breath until they could be rescued. Then to my horror I watched as a body came tumbling out of the sky. It was a young man and his body was singed from head to toe. At that moment is when fear set in. I was stunned. I could'nt move for a couple of seconds. I coild not believe what I was seeing. Then after that it was just body after body falling out of the sky. An announcement came over in our building for us not to leave the building just yet because of falling debris. I picked up the nearest phone to call my wife to tell her that i was okay and that it was not effecting our building just yet. She pleaded with me to get out of the building and to get out of there. I told her we were not allowed to leave yet because of the debris falling. She became histerical and thats when I started to worry about our unborne baby. I told her i would call her back before I left but I never got the chance. I went back to the window to see what was going on when we heard this loud rour. Little did I know it was another plane coming in to the south tower. I watched the plane coming in and it looked it was going to turn right intn our building. I hit the floor and the explosion of second plane rocked our building. I could feel the ripple of the explosion right through my stomach. It was powerful. Now the announcement came over to evacuate the building. I was the fire warden for the floor I was on , so I went cube to cube making sure everyone was out. Now we had to walk down 17 flights not knowing what we would see when we got to the street. Our building exited on to the west side highway and I knew I was going to see carnage. What I saw blew my mind. There were bodies strewn all over the west side highway as well as body parts. People were laying on sidewalks critcally injured. I ran to the back of the building towards the Hudson river to our staging point for my co-workers. I told them I was going home to call about our work status. I got on the ferry to Jersey City and we had about a dozen injured people on the boat. As we got half way across the river the building started coming down. Thank God I left when I did. The area where I was standing was completly covered in a big cloud. This was history that we had just witnessed. I still to this day cannot get thed images from that day out of my head. </text>

<text>I know it'll sound cliche' but 9/11/01 started like anyother day for me. I went to work for my now brother-in-law, watching his twins who were at the time 8 months old. After putting them down for a nap, I was watching a movie on some movie channel, I went to the bathroom and the phone rang I ran to get it thinking "who could possibably be calling at this moment". It was my now husband telling me to turn the news, he never watches the news so it seemed rathar wierd that he was telling me to turn the news. He told me "The World Trade Center has been destroyed and a plane has hit the pentagon" I didn't believe him and he told me to turn on the news. I asked him which station he told me any station. So I found the remote and turned it to my local news station to see before my eyes a single tower on the screen. It was like someone had pulled the veil over the perfect summer day and twisted it into a horrible nightmare. I was in tears thinking about the people that were injured, dead, and trapped. Hoping with all hope that the fire department of New York could do something to stop the fire. I got off the phone after my now husband said that we should keep the lines clear incase of any calls that needed to come in. So we got off the phone, I called my mom and made sure that my cousin's husband was ok since he works a half a mile from the Pentagon at the Paten Office. She said that he was ok and was heading home right a way. I made two other phone calls then just watched the TV perplexed and astounded by what I was watching. Thankfully I was taking care of my niece and nephew that helped take my mind off what was going on. I ended up coming home to my husband and cried in his arms knowing yet still hoping that there were survivors but preparing for the fact that there wasn't going to be any cheers of joy.
