NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I work out of my home office in Mississauga, Ontario Canada. I was on the phone on hold with a customer in New Jersey when I heard (on their radio)about a plane crashing into the World Trade Center. I hung up and turned on the TV and was witness to the second plane crashing into the Tower. As soon as that happened, the first words out of my mouth were Osama Bin Laden ! I follow world events very closely and knew that he was the only one how could have done this ! The next few hours were spent calling family and friends just to talk about these incomprehensible events ! I spent many of the next hours crying and enraged at the same time. My niece from the Boston area travels extensively from Logan airport, I called my sister to ask her daughters wereabouts and was relieved to hear she was at home for the day. Our son, who worked in a tower in downtown Toronto was sent home when most businesses here closed for the day. We live near Toronto Airport, the erie silence of no planes landing or taking off was very noticible. My wife and I went to our daughter and son-in-laws home to spend time with them and our new grangaughter, born on September 7th. Its hard to believe a year has passed since that horrible day. I wasn't really sure what the twin towers were or anything. The next day I watched the news and saw the whole incident; It is really sad people did that to the buildings, but what is really bad is all the people who died with it. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I awoke to my alarm clock on the morning of 11 September. It was tuned to KNX, a Los Angeles news station. In a state of being half awake I hear something about a fire in the WTC. Then several minutes later there was a report about a possible plane crashing into the building. My first thoughts were that they were broadcasting a modern version of the "War between the Worlds" at a strange hour. Several minutes later there was another report about the WTC. Then, my thoughts were that there must be something to this story, it is time to get out of bed and go to the family room to check any TV reports. As soon as the TV came on there was an image of the smoke and fire billowing out of one of the TWC tower. The report was true! Then they showed the odd, angled slice through the side of the building. I was glued to watching the story unfold. Then the reports continued about the plane hitting the building, and then the video showing the hit! How were the people inside coping? How many people were killed and injured? Who was in the airliner? How could a pilot hit a building in the city? Were the people in the building escaping? Was there any way to put out the fire? Then the pictures showing the second hit! This has had to be done on purpose. Why? Who? What is going on? Then the reports of the planes being hijacked! What is going on? What madness is causing this destruction? Then the first tower collapes! Then the second! Then the Pentagon!How many thousands have died - ten, twenty - how many? This is WAR! Someone, somewhere will pay for this barbarity! I had to watch every minute of what was taking place on TV. I watched all day. It was the most incredible, inconceivable day of my adult life. This one day has changed our way of life drastically. We have for the first time in our history been severely attacked by an outside force! It must not happen again! I must and will be more aware of my surroundings, the people in it, and be prepared to take any action needed to defend myself, my family, and other innocent people. The needless deaths of the innocent victims killed in the WTC, the Pentagon, and the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania. This was my first terrorist attack that I could remember because I was old enough to remember it. When the first attack happened I was sitting in science and my school principal interupted our class with the news. He let the kids with parents working call them and tell them what was going on. After that we just sat at our tables and watched the television. We went on with our normal day after lunch. Once i got home i stayed inside and watched the television for at least two ours listening to the latest news. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life has changed not very much but it has changed. Now when I am walking down the street or riding in a car and I see an airplane i wonder how the people who had to go through knowing that they were going to die felt. I see a person of that decent and wonder if they could be terrorist too but then i realize that everyone deserves a chance in life just because a few of them did it doesnt mean all of them did. One thing is that opur country went down in turmoil and just got that much stronger. We increased security, we stepped up the amount of police power, and the country grew that much closer together. After September 11th we should remember the people who fought down the terrorist in the plane that didn't make it to its destination. We should remember the people trapped in the World Trade Center that just went on a normal day to work and didn't come home to their families. All the fire fighters who lost their lives just doing their job. We should also remember the ones who survived the tragedy and praise them as well because they are going to have a permanet scar of what happened. Being almost fully asleep I had no idea what the building was. As I watched I saw it was the Twin Towers and that terrorists had run a plane into one of them, then I saw them jam a second plane into the remaining tower. My reaction was blunt because I was tired, I knew they did it for some kind of reason, but with sleep on my mind I would have to find out what the reason was later. The media makes it sound like America is 100 percent innocent. However, we were the ones that wanted to run a gas line through Afghanistan and not share any of the gas. And just like America, Afghanistan has terrorists too, they were bound to unleash their plans sooner or later, what better time than now? I think we should remember that there is evil out in our world, in every country, and we should do what we can to stop it. The people need to know that by leaveing it up to the people in the N.Y.P.D the problems wont be fixed. E.g. officers in the N.Y.P.D are trying to get people like Alex Sanchez deported for belonging to an organization called Homies Unidos because they help to get drugs off the streets, kids out of gangs, and settle gang rivalries. Officers don't like this because without gangs and criminals they have no one to frame for their illegal doings, no one to harass, and nothing to do. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I witnessed it on the campus TV and later at the dorms of George Mason University. I witnessed with hundreds of other students some of whom had family there some of whom didn't have a clue what was going on. I remember sitting down for breakfast at around 9:30 and a friend of mine comes running to me saying that a plane hit the World Trade Center. With this news I immediately ran to the TV's and looked as the footage was shown over and over of the second plane hitting the second tower. Every now and then they would say something sketchy abou tthe Pentagon but nothing realy definitive on what happened. I looked around me several times to see the crowd had amassed to enormous proportions for such a small space; everyone wanted to knwo what happened. Unfortuantely I had class at 10:30, a test, all I had seen so far was the fall of both towers and the crash at the pentagon. Immediately beofre my class I called home to tell my parents, if they didn't already know, I found that the line was busy so I emailed them to watch the news. I went to my class and took the test that everyone was dreading, but there was a different kind of fear in the classroom, not of failing but of terror. As soon as I got out of class, I went to my best friend, me and her decided to go to a friend's dorm room and watch the news, I wasn't planning on goign to any of my other classes, this was importnat, I had to know what was going on. We sat down in the dorm room, flipping between CNN, ABC, FOX and every other channel to try and get every side of the story. I failed to mention the fact that I am an Arab and Muslim and American. We sat there hoping that it wasn't Arabs who had done it, we prayed for the people in the buildings and got goosebumps everytime we saw another bloody face. It was horrible watching the destruction and death, the terror and anger in people's faces. We left the dorm room and went home immediately, my mom kept calling me to make sure I was ok and to make me come home. School was canceled for the evening and I went home with my best friend, we sat there watching the news and thinking and discussing. It puzzled all of us and it still does. Yes and no, it did in that immediately after the attacks I was afraid as a Muslim woman wearing a scarf to leave my house. The fear wore off and I decided that it wasn't my ignorance or my fault. In every race and every culture, in every religion and in every country you have people who are just plain evil; their intentions are evil and they have no great reason for what they do, whatever they may claim, September 11th just reaffirmed this notion. I think what should be remembered is the bravery of all who witnessed it, not just those at Ground Zero but those at home who saw the horror. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I teach second grade at an Arlinton,VA elemantary school. We are located in south Arlington about 5 or 6 miles from the Pentagon. When the attacks ocurred in NY, we, at the school, were teaching so we were unaware of the tragedy. An itinerant teacher came into my classroom and said" we have been bombed" I thought that this was the end because I thought 'WW3'immediately. As teachers,it is very important that when something happens that will upset the students, teachers try to maintain a feeling of calm and normalcy so that children will not get upset. So, of course, I kept right on teaching. Then outside my classroom window I saw parents rushing to the front door of the building. Many of our parents are here from the Middle East and have not been here very long. Most are not yet citizens of the US. By this time we were made aware of the situation. My first thought was that those poor parents having come from so much chaos in their own countries must be much more fearful than I could ever fathom. All of the teachers stayed until all of the students were picked up or taken home on the school bus.There was no school the next day but on the eleventh when the children returned we were urged to have discussions with the children about what they wanted to talk about. With the second graders we were also urged to let them draw pictures about what they knew about the tragedy. Students drew very realistic pictures of the Twin Towers, the Pentagon. and the airplanes. Children tried, in their innocence, to make sense of the tragedy. One of the questions asked was"why are they mad at us"? One child asked "did we do that to them first"? And,ofcourse, the question I dreaded, "will they fly a plane into this school"? We had lots of discussion that first day back and I felt so helpless because I could not make it all better for them. I was heading to my international relations class at Indiana University-Purdue University in Fort Wayne, Indiana when a classmate told me about 2 planes colliding into the World Trade Center. I didn't believe him at first until I saw the video of the planes slamming into the WTC. I was in a state of shock. I couldn't believe what was happening before my eyes. After work that day, I went home and watched the coverage on television. I remained in a state of shock through the rest of the week, then I became angry at the terrorists for what they did to my country and I wanted revenge. I became Catholic and embarked on a new direction in my life. Instead of becoming a lawyer, I went to grad school for my masters and doctorate in history. I feel that my job is to educate college students about the world we live in, about other nations's histories, help them to understand the world and the people of the world around them. Maybe by educating future generations, maybe we can put an end to terrorism forever. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think 9/11 should be remembered for what hate does to people and what drives them to commit acts of mass murder of innocent populations. It should also be remembered as a time of unity in our country, when no one was conservative, liberal, we were all Americans united. We should always remember those who were murdered on that day, but they would want us to go on with living our lives, which is the best way to honor those that were murdered on that day. I flew the flag for an entire year after the attacks. Since then I fly it on Memorial Day, 4th of July, Flag Day, Labor Day and on 9/11. I was working for Rural Metro Ambulance in Knoxville TN on that beautiful morning.We had heard on a local radio station that a small plane had hit the WTC.My partner and I joked that we were glad not to have to be working that call.Awhile later, my now husband, called to tell me that the second tower and the Pentagon had been hit.I went totally numb.I asked what I already knew in my heart."Is this a terrorist attack?" My husband said "Yes,we're under attack." I knew that I couldn't go in & watch tv anywhere or I wouldn't be able to finish out my shift.I would only allow my husband to tell me very litle.When I finally got home I was able to see the total devestation for myself.It is still impossibly hard to believe that this has happened. I didn't believe him at first but when i walked into the classroom the teacher had he TV on and was watching what had happened and what was happening. I was in 8th grade on September 11th, and that morning I was feeling the usual grouchiness about being back in school (it was only the second week.) My math class that morning was twice as long as usual, and when my teacher first left us to go down to the office, I remember she looked very worried, but at the time I was actually grateful for the break in class (something I have felt horrible about ever since). We found out later her son worked in the World Trade Center (he was ok, thank God). No one knew what was going on, really- at first we didn't even realize something was going on. My math teacher, was, of course, distracted for the rest of class, but it wasn't until one or two classes later that anyone really knew how big this really was. I heard a rumor about the Twin Towers being blown up, which I dismissed as completely impossible. Then the principal came on the PA an announced that there was some kind of attack going on in New York City, that he didn't know more, and he'd tell us when he did. My town is a suburb of the city- about 45 minutes north. Half the kids in school had parents who commuted there. Slowly we all found out more- my health teacher let us spend class trying to find out what we could on the internet- and by lunch we all knew what was going on. I remember kids walking around the hallways crying, trying to reach people on cell phones (service was down all around the city)- and wondering how many kids I knew had lost a parent, how many of my friends' lives had been terribly, irrevocably changed on what had started as just a dreary, innocuous tuesday morning. School was surreal- some kids were in a panic, others were acting as if nothing was happening- I think it was too crazy to process, yet- but a lot of parents came and picked up their children. I called my mom and she drove my friend and I home. My friend's mother had had one of so many close calls I heard about in the next weeks- she had planned on going to a breakfast meeting in the towers, but decided at the last minute not to. My friend finally managed to get through to her mother, and found out that she was ok- I remember her crying. I remember sitting in front of the TV with a box of Oreos, watching the images of the planes hitting on the news, hearing crazy theories, casualty projections. I remember nothing more until the next morning, waking up to hear the radio station, which had previously broadcasted from the world trade center, assuring their listeners that they were all ok, and it hitting me that yes, it really did all happen. I think that what should be remembered is first, all those who died, and all those who tried to save people. Next, I think, is all those who lost someone- to me, part of the tragedy was how unexpected and unlikely yet how devastating it was. I think what should also be remembered is the tremendous spirit of giving and kindness that swept across the nation and the world- people standing in line to give blood, the benefit concerts, small towns in kansas sending trucks loaded with blankets and clothes and dry socks for relief workers. She kept calling for me. So, I finally came into the room. She look shocked. I remember her saying "I have no idea what's going on, but something either hit or blew up one of the world trade centers", I sat down and watched with her. When the newscaster finally anounced what had actually happened, my mom was very worried. She sent me to school and told me to keep my cell phone on and with me at all times, just incase something were to happen to me or her throughout the day. When I do attend these events however, security is extremely tight. But, other than that, I haven't really been affected. I also think that people should remember the way that our country came together after that day, and the national pride that we all had. One of my patients were watching the tv when the news broke in with the first attack on the WTC. From that moment on we were all glued to the tvs while still trying to care for our patients. All the tvs were tuned into this horrible event. I, at first, wanted to rush home to get my daughter out of school as some others had done. But I also had a responsibility to care for my critically ill patients. So I stayed, with my coworkers, and watched in shock and horror while the events unfolded. It was a beautiful morning and I was in my kitchen watching Good Morning America as I do every morning. I can remember taking a drink of my coffee and passing in front of the television and seeing a picture that I could not believe. I sat down in front of the TV and cried. How dare someone come into my country and kill so many innocent people. The pictures coming into my home via the TV were horrific. I also remember thinking where is my government. Is'nt someone supposed to be protecting us from this sort of thing. My children and husband were off at work, my grandson was at daycare, is there going to be and attack near us, do I go and try to get everyone home. The feeling to helplessness was overwhelming. I left my apartment, which was in Bensonhurst, at, I am going to say, a little after 8am on the morning on 09/11/01. I had a conference at The NYPL Donnell location which is located on W53rd Street at 9:30am. My train - the N train - passed under the World Trade Center, stopping at Cortlandt Street. That morning the train stopped at Cortlandt Street at usual, except we got delayed at the station. People were getting annoyed and they got off the train to get another train so they weren't late to work. Meanwhile people who were getting on the train were talking in excited tones - I knew something was going on but I couldn't quite make out what they were talking about. Then a girl got on and she sat next to me. She was rubbing her hands through her hair and she asked me, "is there anything in my hair" and I said, "no, what's the matter?" (I normally wouldn't inquire like that, but it seemed like she was distressed about something). She told me there was a fire in the World Trade Center and there was paper everywhere, to which I replied - "That's not good," which is like the understatement of the year, but I had figured it was like a garbage can fire or something small. In retrospect, I wonder what happened to the people who got off my train. So the train finally took off from Cortlandt Street. I got off at 49th Street/7th Avenue. Everyone was looking down the street toward downtown, toward the World Trade Center, and talking about terrorism and smoke. I was like, uhhh what's going on??? I looked, but I probably wasn't wearing my glasses and I couldn't see any smoke. So, at this point I knew there was a fire in the World Trade Center and people were talking about terrorism. I took out my cell phone to call my sister to see if she knew anything, but my phone wouldn't work. I thought it was because I had dropped it that morning. I figured I would go to my conference and try to call her later on during the break. Of course, the conference never happened.... I got there and I asked some people in the elevator if they knew anything about a fire at the World Trade Center, and nobody really knew anything. It wasn't until I got to the conference room that I found out what had happened - two planes hit the World Trade Center and another plane hit the Pentagon in DC. At that time people were saying all sorts of crazy things like there were 5 more planes in the air and the White House was hit, etc. The conference actually went on as scheduled for about an hour when someone came in and told us the World Trade Center had collapsed and we could leave. I was in a daze as I walked out of the conference room and went down in the elevator to street level. I tried calling my family on my cell phone, which wasn't working, and on a payphone at the library, but that wasn't working either. Finally, someone let me use a landline and I got through to my mother who told me everything was fine, I was going to be OK. Honestly, I thought I was going to die, I was really ready to. After hanging around the library for a while, trying to figure out how to get home, these girls came up to me and told me I could walk to the Bronx with them. So that is what I did. It was so surreal - all these people walking, talking about what was going on..... So we got to the Bronx and I went to the house of one of the girls. Her and her boyfriend drove me home later that evening - it took over 2 hours to get me back to Brooklyn. I don't think I have the ability to convey how I felt on 09/11/01 in writing, it was just an unbelievable surreal experience. I know I am more aware now, I am not as naive as I used to be in thinking that nothing bad will ever happen. But there are ways I have changed that I probably won't notice for years to come. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was a seventh grader in Junior High. I woke up like normal. I live on the west coast, in California, so when I was just waking up, the attack was already in full swing. My mom told me planes had hit the WTC. And then, the one thing I will always remember- where I was that tragic day, just as my parents had told me about the tragic day of J.F.K.'s assassination. I stared at terror. Two huge building, which size I couldn't even comprehend, with huge gaping holes in them and smoke billowing out. It was horrific. Even as a kid, it stuck me in a way that is indescribable. I sat there, feeling so helpless, eating my breakfast. I felt like I had to tell someone, but I couldn't. I felt so small. Then as I took another bite, "Apparently there has been an explosion of some type at the Pentagon." said the news anchor. Then I see our central military building with, just as at the WTC, billowing smoke coming out of it. As I walked back to get dressed, just before I went into the bathroom, 2 WTC began to fall away. As I switch to NBC, ABC, and CBS news, I saw it was true. Right before my eyes, so many people lost their lives. Slowly I began to realize just how many lives had been lost. Firefighters, rescue workers, police, WTC workers, the list is endless. Then, in the bathroom, my mom yelled, "Another plane crashed!" I ran out. The news anchor said it crashed in a Pennsylvania field. It didn't hit a target, but still had cost lives. I went to school feeling a little on edge. The school was already buzzing with information. Our teacher turned on our closed circuit TV. A blurred picture came up of a news man on a tall building in NY with military jets whizzing by overhead. Immediately after school, the first thing I asked my mom was "Did the second building collapse?" "Yes." she replied. I went home and looked all over the internet for information as the TV went on with the day's tragic event. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. On the west coast we, of course, feel a difference, I'm sure not as much as those in New York, but everybody changed with the world. Of course we've felt the security measures taken and the sharp change in TV, movies, sports, and basic entertainment. That year was not measured by 2001 or 2002, it was measured by the one haunting date... 9/11. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? We of course need to remember the heroes and every last person who lost their lives, but I also think we need to remember the massive scale that this disaster was. This is a huge mark in America's history. NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? We of course flew a flag. My feeling for it did change too. I already had so much respect for it, but I gained something. Now every time I see a flag, the colors- red, white, and blue, look so incredibly strong to me. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. September 11th was one of the most tragic days I can remember. It started as a usually day at school. I was in 8th grade and in first period at the time it happened My teacher told us that she was going to put the news on for us. We didn't know why she was doing it. She told us that we should all promise not to tell anyone or they might get scared. We all agreed. She turned on the TV and there it was, the first tower englulfed in flames. As I watched people running for theor lives, I thought, "Who would do such a thing?" The smoke from the building was the blackest I have ever seen. Papers and documents were floating down everywhere. Pieces of bot the plane and the building were falling on people down below. We watched this until the period was over. As the bell rang, the class left with a terrifying look on their faces.As I left the room I couldn't help but tell everyone. As he day ended we all got on our bus. All everyone was talking about was the towers and who did it. As I got off the bus, I ran all the way home. When i walked in my family's eyes were stuck on the TV. I witnessed nothing other than the first building falling as I walked in. As I wayched i realized how everyone came together as ONE. People of every background were helping. Although people of every background were dieing. As I watched that first tower fall, A shiver went down my back. I was so scared that something worse would happen. Scared that this might be the end, thinking to myself, "If I should go out ever again?" Once the sencond tower fell, I figured that whoever did this just started a new war. A new kind of society. I was right. People were afraid to come out of their homes. The world changed too. Never in my life have I seen the Air Force have to patroll the skies. In the end, over 30,000 people died. Many family lost friends or even family of their own. Now everyone has come on September 11, 2002, to grieve on which two towers fell just one year ago. This day will never be forgotten.
