I woke up on September 11, 2001 and saw the attacks on the news, though I didnt realize it then I would soon realize that this was a point in history. When got to school at High Tech High in San Diego, the principle called an emergency Community Meeting. He gave the news of the Twin Towers and the Pentagon with despair none of us were terribly shaken by the news we all soon realized that this was the worst thing to happen to the American people in a long time. Seeing the desperation of those who jumped to their deaths from high up on the World Trade Center made me understand how bad it really was. Now hearing the numbers of all that died as a result of the terrorist activity, over five thousand was such a surprise. I think these acts have changed America for the better, all Americans are more patriotic now, instead of someone describing himself or herself as African-American or Asian- American, and people now describe themselves as simply American! I get a lump in my throat when I see how patriotic we all are, and it saddens me that it took such a heinous monstrosity to bring out the best in Americans. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was on my way home to Kansas from my Dad's house in Oklahoma. It was a long drive, so I turned on the radio to find some music. I remember going thru the chanels trying to find music as none was playing. When I finally tuned my ears in I heard a news reporter talking about a child that had been trampled in the street by all of the people running for their lives. I literally reached for the radio screaming, "No!" I then found myself shaking uncontrollably and trying to get my pickup out of the ditch. I raced back to Dad's trying to find answers to how we were all going to survive thru this attack and how far it would go. The months to follow I could not bring myself away from the TV. I was in shock and cried forever. I wouldn't go to work. All I could think of was those families who had lost so much. I prayed for the first time in ages, but to no avail, I could not find comfort, only sorrow. My view on life is one of hatred for the ones who aare responsible for this attrocity. Every time I see a person of Middle Eastern decent in this country with those rediculous rags on their heads, fear sweeps thru me and it takes time to recover. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I live in the state of New Jersey, one hour travel from the city. I walk the mile to the beach to see the skyline of New York whenever I feel the urge. On September 11, 2001 I left for work early and happy trying to get a head start on the work ahead. At about 8:50 the news came on to state that one of the Twin Towers was hit by a plane. "WHAT?" I thought. Someone in traffic control is really in the hot seat now. Even when the second plane hit, I could only imagine still something immense in radar control going radically wrong. Then the horror of the Pentagon. As the news came over the radio, I could feel the hairs on my arms rising. "Dear God, we are being attacked. This MUST be war. Where will I hide.I am so close,yet so far, will I be next? Will my daughter be safe, working in London or has something horrendous happened to her? Then for 24 hours I could not reach her, nor could she reach me. No phone, computer e mails could not go through, television out for everyone here unless on cable. Of course,the antenna on the towers were down! That day I ran to the hospital to help and was sent home after two hours. There would be no one coming. Then the daily requests from the city:send water, send clothes, gloves,flashlights, batteries,shoes,dog food,medical supplies, construction workers, medical workers, etc. etc. With every request, for days on end, I loaded the car, drove to the docks in Highlands,N.J. and put it on the ferry, which ran almost continuously for days. I stood there September ll night and touched as many firefighters and people I could coming off the ferry, or at least welcomed them back from the hell in which they had been. They needed to feel humanity. The looks on their faces was indescribable, their eyes staring out, and then the white ash and dirt covering their entire persons. The firemen at the docks were hosing each other down trying to remove as much of the asbestos, dust,ash, etc. Red Cross was running rescue satellite locations. There was organized hell. People were arriving in New Jersey from Connecticut, New York, other part of New Jersey, not caring where they were. They were away from the abomination they had experienced. And yet the days ran on, as well as the horrors. Nothing I did could ever seem to be enough. I stood on the beach and watched the towers burn, totally hopeless. Each day brought news of another local resident being lost or known dead. When I thought that we couldn't handle another death, we did. Everyone knew someone or someone related to someone who died in that horror. The entire community was in despair and depression. How in the name of God could this have happened? I love those I hold dearly more and do my best to protect them, or at least make them aware of what is around them. I was 11 and in 6th grade. I remember in one of the morning periods a secretary coming into our honors math class and asking our teacher to come out into the hall. We didn't care. Just some time to goof off and talk with friends. Our teacher came back and we dashed back to our seats. Our teacher didn't yell at us, but I think I remember her saying we could have a free period for the remaining 10 minutes. During Opportunity Period (40 min at the end of the day for students to see teachers and do HW) I asked my homeroom teacher if I could go to my social studies teacher to get a homework paper which I had lost. She said yes. I went and came back. My homeroom teacher walked over to me as I was packing up my stuff by my desk and handed me a puke green sheet of paper. She said something very vauge, but I knew this was something big. On the bus ride home I read the green sheet of paper. It was a letter from the main school counselor saying that there was always someone to talk to at our school about "the terroristic acts." I saved that sheet of paper and every once in awhile I look at it and remember how I held it in my 11 year old hands. Also while I was on the bus, I talked with friends. They thought maybe we wouldn't have school tomorrow. When I stepped of the bus I saw my mom's blue Volvo. We talked as the tires hit the gravel and made a scratching sound until we were at the top of our driveway in less than 30 seconds. She told me, yet again vaugly, what had happened. She said my aunt, her sister, had gone on a plane to Mexico with her husband for her Wedding Anniversary. I hardly ever saw the aunt and didn't even know the differnce between her and my mom's other 2 sisters, but still, it scared me to know someone in my family may had died. I suddenly felt guilty for not seeing her more. As my mom and I walked into the house from the garage, I heard the TV on. I walked through the kitchen to the living room and saw my sister, who was then 15, and my dad. My dad was allowed to leave work early, and my sister's high school soccer practive was cancled. The next hours were mayhem. Actually, it may have been just a 1/2 hour, but it times like these everything seems much longer. My mom was continuously calling the Airlines trying to find out what place my aunt was on, as I learned who "Osoma Bin Laden" was. I asked my dad to tell me who this strange and ugly man was. He sushed me and continued to have his eyes glued to the TV. He tried to explain it to me but I didn't understand too much. I also remember going outside with my dad. We live in "the country." We have farms but it's not totally in the sticks. We live in a new neighborhood, and in the town over there is a small airport. My dad showed me how there were no planes in the sky. "It's rare," he said. "You'll probobly never witness this again." There was alot I would never witness again that day. Later, I was laying in the living room whining stupidly that some new hole puncher my mom got me that day wasn't working. My sister yelled at me told me I was selfish. Now, I know I was just stupid. I got mad and ran to my room and turned on my favorite radio staion NJ 101.5. There, they were talking about the event too. I didn't know what I wanted so I just switched the radio off. Silence. At around 7, after we found out my aunt was on a plane that wasn't used as a weapon, my family was still glued to the tube as most people were during the next few weeks. We saw tapes of many things including people jumping out of buildings. My sister began to cry. My mom told me it was ok for me to cry. I didn't understand though. How could this happen? America was safe, buildings didn't crumble just because of some weird guy who had some of his weird buddies help him kill inoccent people. How was I supposed to cry when I didn't understand what was happening? Later on in the night I went to bed. I couldn't sleep. I remember imagining terrorists crawling up the walls of our house like Spiderman. They could be anywhere! My parents told me I could sleep in their bed. I tried but couldn't. So I got some little Barbie radio I got for Christmas many years ago and listened to 101.5. I was still scared. Luckily, my parents came and calmed me down and told me terrorists would never come out to the "country" where they have farms. Still, what could stop them? I finally fell asleep that night in my parent's bed. The next day at school everyone was tired. We told stories in just one class for a small period of time. I wanted more time to know I wasn't the only one feeling scared. I needed to know what this whole thing was going to teach me and why it happened. I don't whine about the little things, and I thank people more often. Who knows who's going to be here tomorrow and who's not? I think much more now too. I even have changed little things like what I wish for when I blow candles out on a cake. I used to wish that my parents could get along and they wouldn't get divorced, but on October 24, 2001, my 12th birthday I wished for something that will help the world. Peace. I was in my second-period class when the pricipal came over the intercom and said, "Teachers, do not turn on your telivisions and go on with your regular schedule." At that moment, my teacher went to the classroom next door to see what was going on. She told us that two airplanes had crashed into the World Trade center. Nobody told her that is was terrorists, and she thought it was an American plane. The next period everybody found out what really happend. They thought because we weren't "Adults" yet we wouldn't understand or didn't need to know, so they told the teachers to not talk about it to thier students about it and that they didn't want us to know what had happend.My mother told me that on the radio they told the parents that thier children had been informed about it, but we weren't. We couldn't say anything about it in class or we would get in trouble. My school is located in southern Virginia. At 11a.m., our principal of the school wanted all students to meet in the lunch hall. Everyone met in the lunch hall, and I could not believe what I heard. Mr. Jacobson explained that terrorists attacked the Pentagon and World Trade Center by flying planes into them. Being in the woods I had nothing to worry about. I worried about my mother because she worked five miles away from the Pentagon. No matter where you lived, there was fear. I had just woked up at 8am and my boyfriend had on the news (as usual). All of a sudden the news was showing a plane going into the WTC. My heart sank I felt a lump in my throat......Rich had been in the Navy prior for 9 years and had just gotten out I asked him what the hell is going on? He said baby it's not an accident! I tried to collect myself and by the time I had the second plane hit, I started screaming and crying that is when the phone started ringing. I could not speak to anyone I had to get in touch with my brother Robert, he worked in that area. I could not get him...I started praying to god that he would be okay and so would our friends in the WTC and people we didn't know. It was to late the building collasped and I could not speak or move I just sobbed. When the news of the pentagon was hit I felt like someone had violated me. I asked Rich the Pentagon? How? I always thought of the Pentagon as being untouchable. I know different now. My sister had paased away at the age of 27 and I prayed so hard that he would spare my brothers life!! I could not loose him.I refused to speak to anyone, not even my mother. 7 hours later the phone rang it was a strange number but for some reason I took the call it was my brother at his boss's house in Jersey City, he said im okay, and I love you! September 11, 2001 has changed my life forever! When I was younger I do a report on WW11 my uncle was at Pearl Harbor when we were attacked, I asked him could that ever happen here? He smiled comforted me and said "NO". He died prior to September 11, 2001. I feel scared to do the normal things I did everyday. I look over my shoulder. Everyday I thank god I have my family togther, but not everyone was lucky and I feel pain for their suffering. Innocence was stolen from all of us in one way or another. We have been violated by people who we don't even know and are not "proud" enough in their "cause" to show their faces... We hear someone say the WTC had been bombed but we didnt believe it so after someone else said that they saw it on TV we also turned our TV on. We turned it on just as the 2nd tower was about yo collapse. No one knew what to do every one in teh streets were going crazy, teh reporters didn't know what to do. My life has changed but not in the way that alot of other peoples has. Alot of people were scared to go out, scared to fly in airplanes, and scared of people or arab descent thinking that they must be terrorists. Over 300 of them voluntarily gave their lives to save others. Even more put themselves in danger to save the lives of others. Another thing that should be remembered about 9/11 is how teh nation came together as a whole to deal with and honor the deaths of the thousands of innocent citizens and the hundreds of dead fire fighters. It was a picture-perfect day in southeast Massachusetts, the sky was a brilliantly blue, nearly cloudless when a roaring, thunderous and now ominous sound came out of the East. The sound was caused by the scrambling of fighter jet planes from Otis Air Force Base racing against the elusive minutes of time on their way to New York City. At this moment, on 9/11, I had only fleeting thoughts of why these fighter planes were so driven to accelerate so rapidly and to fly so low in a southwesterly directions. My questions were soon answered, upon entering my home the NBC news had just broadcasted information of the first tower being struck by a plane and then to my bewildered mind, the second tower was hit by the second plane. Then I heard that another plane had crashed into the other tower. I knew then that this was not accident. I continued onto work and my fellow workers and I watched it on the television. When I saw that the governor had called up all the NY National Guard that I raced home to wake my husband. He had worked the night before and was sleeping. He is in the National Guard. He called his armory just as they were being notified to call everyone. We began to pack his clothing and then before I knew it he was driving away. My whole family was there holding me. I am more alert living so close to a national border, I always am on the look-out for strange behavior and have no problem reporting it. I had a fifty dolloar bill with some Arabic writing on it so I telephoned the FBI. At first I was a little nervous about doing that but they were eager to get a look at it and thanked me for being observant. Thankfully it wasn't anything. But my confidence in the FBI was elevated that day. Now my husband is going off to the war on Terrorism and I am scared, but so proud of him. As I wittnessed the horror of the WTC I wondered weather any of my family escaped for they had a commodity exchange in tower 2, then I wondered if any of the rookies I trained in NYPD were there and why was this happening? I now live in Florida and retired from NYPD (LOD) and a combat vet of the Vietnam War, after the second plane crashed into the the WTC I knew we were at war. But the answer I was looking for was with who, who did we harm so bad that they would do this to us. I watched and my mind automatically switched to a combat mode, no feeling, first call my sister in law and see if everyone got out, yes they did. Second get though to Chris my buddy on the JOB (NYPD) to see if he and the boys were alright it took hours, and they what could I do for them. Several times I turned to the GOD of my understanding and asked why? I prayed for the fireman and cops and EMT workers who never would see another sunset, Vietnam all over, the nightmares came back, like a VCR tape that never ends, the days as a cop in the south bronx, the homicides the killing of cops the funerals all to real yet sleep wouldn't come for seven days. I was completely powerless, then it came, SLEEP, afterwhich I saw my buddy a marine doctor who helped me over this. I've been all over the world, place where normal people do not go in search of American POW's, and a son of an immigrant family always realized that we are the greatest country mankind has ever known. We are always there to help other country's in time of disaster, food, clothes, shelther and money, and why would some country do this to us? Why must I come to understand anothers way of life? My parents were dirt poor immigrants who learned the American way of life and raised seven childen to love this great Repubic. On September 11th my husband and I were on a trip with a group of adults from Pittsburgh at Rocking Horse Ranch in N.Y. about 90 miles from NY City. When we came down for breakfast on that tragic morning the televisions were on and one of the Towers were in smoke. We saw the second plane hit and shortly after all HELL broke loose. We heard that one plane went down in Pittsburgh and tried calling home. There were no phone lines for hours to call home. It was simply terrifying. When I finally did get through to my parents, dad was very shaken but seemed fine. We carried on as best as we could that day. There were no planes in the skies, air traffic had been haulted. No birds or insects dared invade this air space either. Not a single animal was to be seen in the woods. It was very errie, it was like the whole world just STOPPED! Little did I know just how this day would impact my whole family. My father had a heart attack and died on the morning of Sept.14th.we believe from the shock and stress of seeing the planes go down. You see in WWII my father was a Tailgunner and his plane crashed. He was the only member on board to survive. September 11th will be a day that sent a ripple of grief across the globe. The thing I think we should remember is that there is evil in this world but we can't let evil win. I am so very proud of the people on that plane in Pennsylvanil who died in order to save others. Everyone in the waiting room were standing there in a silent horror watching all that was taking place. We were all in such disbelief, I myself wondering "Is this really happening?" After flipping through some channels I saw the news reporting on some building that was on fire. I didn't much care for another building on fire and I assumed it was nothing too big. I continued changing the channels as if nothing was happening. Later that morning my carpool informed me of the attacks, but even they were uncertain of the details which left me wondering how accurate their account could be. We were informed of the attacks at school and sent home for the day. When I got home I was just in time to witness the second tower collapsing. I had seen history as it was unfolding yet I completely looked past it because I thought it wasn't as important as watching sports highlights. I learned to not be in such a hurry with my life and to appreciate things for what they really are. I've also become more aware of my surroundings at all times. The phone rang and it was our shop supervisor's husband. He called and told us that the World Trade Center had been hit. The three of us working that day didn't think too much of it at the moment--the radio was still playing music, it couldn't have been that bad. The radio went to a news announcement and we turned it up. Our supervisor's husband called again to update us on what was going on. Shortly after that, the scene shop supervisor came in and said that the TV was on in the scene shop if we wanted to come down and watch. We all went. It was unreal. The scene shop was silent--no drills or saws were on--nothing. The scene shop crew as well as a few others where all there when we arrived--some sitting, some standing, all eyes on a television set that was no bigger than a postcard. We all stood there in awe, in shock of what we could barely make out going on on the TV set. I will never forget the moments that we all were together in one room--our lives both halted and bound together as we watched the events that were unfolding before our nation on that tiny, fuzzy, black and white television set. When I first heard about the terrorist strike of September 11,2001, I was in my fourth period Algebra 1 class. We took our test as scheduled, and then once the last person had turned theirs in, my teacher broke the news to us. I first thought,"That's horrible, how could anybody do sucha thing." But the information my teacher had given us was old, and then my principal came over the PA and gave us the real news. I remember I looked at the clock when he came on, it was 10:47, I had found out what happened after both towers had collapsed. The really sad thindg was that I wasn't sure what the World Trade Center was. I had heard of the Twin Towers before, but I didn't have a clear picture in my mind of what they were. One of my most vivid memories was how bad I was trembling. I would shiver, but I wasn't cold. My teeth would chatter uncontrolably and I couln't believe the number of presumed dead I was hearing. I think that the only part of my life that has really changed since then is the way I look at people and the way I feel about my country. Sometimes when I look at people, I wonder how 9/11 effected them. I wonder if they lost somebody or if it is just a day to grieve for them. When I went to NYC this summer, it seemed that every person I saw on the streets I found myself wondering if they lost somebody in the attacks, if they had once worked there, or if they were just some ordinary person who had watched the towers fall from their office bulding. Since September 11 I have had a lot more faith and honor in my counrty. I have never in my life felt more proud to be an American. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think that September 11 should always be a day of rememberance for the people that died. I think that on this day every year we should remember the fire fighters, the police officers, the port autority, the people, the military, the families, and the nation. I think we should remember the people that died, not the horrible way that they died. When documentaries and rememberance stories come on, I don't think they should fill the screens with the towers falling over and over, but show the families, the surrviors, and run memoirs of those who died. NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? Yes, the American flag flew outside my house almost everyday since September 11. Since that day my whole perception of the flag has changed. I always knew that our flag stood for freedom and that it was important, but the freedom achieved belonged to stories in history books, and my parent and grandparent's generation. I had never in my life seen out freedom threatened, I had never seen out nation in such disarray and turmoil as I had seen on September 11. When that day happened, when I saw innocent American's die, when I saw hatred of our wonderful country, I knew that our freedom had been invaded. All of a sudden the flag meant more to me. It was asif I knew that it really did stand for freedom. In the months that passed September 11, and I watched on the news our troops defending us and protecting our freedom, that was when I think I realized I knew what freedom meant. The word now actully meant something to my generation, it now a visual, heart breaking meaning, and it was not read in the history books, but was now a present day fight for our American Freedom. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was in 8th grade in Fountain Valley, California. I had woken up early to shower, so I put on my robe and was about to head to the bathroom. My sister came up the stairs and told me what had happened. We went downstairs and watched it all live. I didn't understand what it really meant. I thought it wasn't a big deal. All my dad said was "It's terrorists." But I still had no idea what he meant, so I just went and showered. While I was in the shower the second plane hit. I got out and my family and I watched the buildings slowly burn. The planes hit near the top, hundreds of people had to choose, burn alive or jump? Many of them jumped, everytime you saw it you felt a sick feeling in your stomach. Who would want to do this to something living? I will always know what I was wearing on 9/11 - 2001 because it was picture day. I was late for first period because my family got caught up in watching T.V. I still didn't fully understand what was happening untill I got to 2nd period. My teacher was loud, and hyper and happy. There was no happiness in her that day, or anyone else. She was screaming about it the entire period. She cried real tears up in front of our class. It was after that hour of her explaining (in a way) that it hit me that this was real, those were real people falling to their death that very second. I discovered what those towers meant to us that day. I realized if they were capable of that, then no one is safe. It was in that moment of tragedy that we stood our tallest and strongest. All americans, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, stood hand in hand because we could all make it through this together. Everyone put out their flags, people rushed to the still burning buildings to help however they could. Many people died in their struggle to help another person, but they died noble, they had made a difference. We attended churches, synagogues, anywhere to be together and pray. I don't think any american had dry eyes that day, we all shed tears for the victims. We lit candles, and we all sat in front of our television sets and watched, in horror, but it was impossible to take your eyes away. America came together that day and we will never be the same again. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I've become more aware of our situation and how other countries feel about us. I realize what those towers meant to us. I was not directly effected by what happened, no one I knew died. But I know everyone feels effected. I am more proud of being an american, and I know how special it is. I realize how sick some people are, not everyone is happy as I am, not everyone is as good off. I am more sympathetic for people. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think we need to remember our heros. So many died, in order to save others. As people were rushing out of the buildings that had not even collapsed yet, firemen were rushing up to save whoever they could. They knew death could meet them any minute, but they cared about who they could save. We need to remember to cherish our loved ones because they will not always be here, it shouldn't just be in the sight of tragedy that we pull them close. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I remember when and where I was exactly when I heard the news. It was a little bit after 9'o clock. Since I was only 14 I was in my high school geometry class. We started to do our indvidual work when we heard a knock at the door. My teacher answered it and I remember the look on her face. Right away I could tell that the news was bad, but at that time I thought nothing of it and went back to my work. It wasn't long, about 50 seconds, that the term bad was an extreme understatement. The teacher got our attention and told us that something horrible has happened. She couldnt even tell us. She just turned on the TV and the sight before me was one I will never forgot. The image on the screen was of the first Twin Tower ablaze. I saw the fire, the smoke, and heard the screams of people running for cover. I saw firemen, police officers, and even civilians running into the burning tower to save human life. As I watched I could just feel the energy being drained from my body as I came at a realization that I hoped I would never face, America wasn't invincible. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I don't think my life has changed that much. It has changed my out look on life. I now realize that this could very well happen anywhere at anytime, we never know what the future holds. I think that 9/11 made everyone look at their life and say "I have been thinking that everything is guarenteed." It made the realize that there may not be a tommorow and to live each day to the fullest and always doing whats right. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think that the most important thing to remember is the men and women who were willing to give their lives to save others. We should remember how in the moment of need, everyone all over the country came togther and pitched in. Weither it was giving blood or donating money to Red Cross, everyone and everywhere in the country contributed. NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? The first thing I did when I came home was make sure we had a flag was flying in our frong yard. I wanted to make sure that we showed our love and pride for our country. I always loved seeing our flag. Even before 9/11 I filled with pride every time I saw a flag. The only thing that changed after 9/11 was that pride was even greater knowing that the worst has come but we still stand strong.
