We were doing exercises when someone from a different class came running in and said,"two commercial airliers just smashed into the World Trade Centers in New York City." I, personally, didn't beleive them, and if it was true i thought it was probably an accident. When i got home and relized it was all true I was astonished. I couldn't believe it really happen. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. My remembrance of Sept. 11 begins the evening before. I was working as a traveling nurse and living in Alexandria, Virginia--just 8 miles from the Pentagon. The evening before, some co-workers and I went to get a bite to eat after work. On the way to the restaurant, I remember driving and looking out towards the Shenandoah mountains and seeing an absolutely beautiful sunset. I wished I had a camera to take a picture of it. The next morning, I had off from work so I slept in until around 8:30. Then around 9:45, a maintanance worker came to my apartment to fix something and asked if I was watching the news. I said, "No, should I? He told me a plane hit the Pentagon, so I turned on the local news which had a live picture of the scene. A couple of minutes later, I found out about New York when they went to the national news. I just kept watching the tv and praying. At one point, I looked at the clock. The time was 10:08 am and I felt my apartment shake and the windows rattled, the news had said the plane had further exploded at the Pentagon and there was more smoke billowing up. I was so scared and I kept praying thinking that the end of the world was coming. Later that morning I went onto my balcony and I could see the smoke rising up into the sky and I could see the military helicopters flying around the DC Metro area. During the afternoon, my thoughts returned to the evening before, the innocence of myself and my co-workers enjoying some ice cream. Looking back, that beautiful sunset seems almost metaphoric now, as if GOD was saying the sun is setting on the peace and innocence of the world. I remember on the morning of September 11th I was in the high school nurse's office when another faculty member came in and turned on the tv to show us what was happening. It was like watching something that came from a movie-surreal and unimaginable. It didn't seem like it was acutally happening until I came home that day to see the Pentagon burning and the towers collapsing on the news. Then the plane crashed in Pennsylvania. I wasn't sure when it was going to end...and I guess in a way it hasn't stopped since there is still the threat of terrorism. My life has changed because I am now caught in a generation that will always be on the lookout, guarding the safety of themselves and their families. For me, the plane crash in Pennsylvania came too close to home. I only live a few minutes from there, so I was pretty shaken. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think that the lives that were lost should be remembered most importantly. Sure, the towers and the Pentagon are still symbols of America, but I think that the citizens of this country are more important than any building. We should also remember the heroes as well. Not only have they helped us rescue the victims, but they give us hope that if we were the ones trapped in such a situation that we would be rescued. The day of September 11, 2001 started like every other day, but ended like no other day in the history of our country. I was in school, sitting down talking to my friends in the gym, when I one of my friends told me that a plane had just hit one of the twin towers. I started to laugh. I told him that such a thing was impossible. He told me that he was serious, however I still did not believe him. A few minutes later, my teacher came in with a radio. The whole class listened as the radio clarified that a plane had struck one of the towers. I was completely filled with surprise. I tried to make sense of the crash. Maybe the plane had a problem and just crashed, I thought. Later that period I was proved wrong when I heard that another plane had hit the second tower. At that point I was in shock. Who would do such a horrible thing? Other students became very upset and some started to cry. I still could not get over the fact that it happened. On my way to next period I saw many students crying and worrying about someone they know who worked in the buildings. When I arrived at my next class, my teacher was in panic. His daughter went to the NYU and her dormatory was right across from the World Trade Centers. The class was very worried and throughtout the whole period everyone just sat in shock. The next period was the worst of all. We were sitting in the class talking about the tragedy, when my teacher says that there has been a bomb threat on the school. The whole class went crazy. Everyone rushed out of the room and headed to the parking lot where we stood for about 45 minutes. In fear for my life, my parents came to school and picked my brother and me up. We headed straight home and watched the news. I watched in horror as the first building fell. I could not comprehend what had just happened. The fall of the second tower proved that this was not a dream. The events of September 11th have changed the way all Americans live. I will never forget that day or the heros who saved so many lives. The events of September 11 fell during the holidays following my A-level exams, just before I went off to university. I remember getting a phone call from my dad as I was eating my lunch, ringing to tell me that a light aircraft had hit the World Trade Centre in New York. One of the twin towers was onfire but it looked merely like a dreadful accident. I turned on the television to be confronted by the scene of smoke and flame belching from one of the twin towers. The rest of the BBC news had been halted to make way for full coverage of this epicentre of world events. Within seconds though, all thoughts of a tragic accident evaporated as, captured live, the dark and fleeting shape of a 767 banked in a dive and raked into the second twin tower. I remember exclaiming to myself as a gout of smoke, flame and twisted metal showered over the area around the Trade Centre as the jet impacted. From then on, I was gripped by the coverage which went on well into the evening. A short while after the second tower had been hit, news filtered through that there had also been an incident in Washington. A pall of smoke was shown rising from the area near to the Pentagon and I remember there being garbled reports that a car bomb had gone off at the state department. Soon, however, pictures were being relayed of helicopters and jets circling the area and it was soon evident that another aircraft, a 757 of American Airlines had hit the Pentagon and inflicted heavy damage. By this time, reporters were announcing that both American and United Airlines were 'growing concerned' about a number of their flights. American mentioned flights 11 and 77, while United voiced worries about flights 175 and 93. Then came the horrific denouement to a tragedy. The moment of the implosions of the twin towers. I speak as if they occurred at the same time because that is what it felt like. The shock of seeing one of the towers collapse was such that when the other fell later on, it was hard to register that anything else could happen on this day to compound the tragedy. As if by a sickening afterthought, news came of United flight 93's fate: the 757 had ended its journey when it crashed into a field in Chambers County, Pensylvannia. The rest of the day was a time of great depression, the like of which I have never known after having seen a tragic news story. My parents arrived home and were instantly glued to the television, having heard snatched stories from colleagues and friends about what had unfolded that day in the USA. I recall that we didn't eat dinner until 9.00 that evening, such was our focus to learn everything we could of the days events. One of the most important things that I have learned from September 11 was that life is there to be cherished. Most of us have the chance to live life as fully and wholesomely as is possible. We must learn to hold friends and family high in esteem and cherish the experiences that we have with them, for we can never be certain of our own mortality or that of others. Since September 11 I have found myself taking a camera with me whenever I socialise, whether it be a party with friends or a meal with my family. This provides me with tangible evidence of the experiences I have shared with those closest to me. Once a person is gone from this earth, it is only our memories that we have to keep them alive. Ultimately, September 11 joins the great litany of man's inhumanity to man. It is hard for me to think of those who died that day merely as figures, due to the number of obituaries and memoriams I have seen in newspapers and on the internet. We realise that death is an all encompassing leveller, but we must remember that people who died on September 11 and indeed in other atrocities are all individuals. They have experienced the same thoughts and feelings as all of us. The fact that we can identify with these people as decent human beings trying to earn an honest living makes it all the more important that we remember their passing on September 11. Being British, I did not myself fly an American flag but I must admit to pangs of admiration concerning the American people. Being a history student, I have always had an intense interest in worldwide terrorism. Like all UK residents, I have vivid memories of news reports when I was younger that detailed the latest terrorist attack by the IRA on a British target. In a way, I felt that America had been relatively lucky in terms of terrorism on their own soil. Aside from atrocities such as Oklahoma, the Trade Centre bombing of 1993 and the Atlanta Olympics in 1996, terrorist attacks against American targets have been consigned to foreign countries, specifically the Middle East. However, I thought it abhorrent when some columnists in the national newspapers here in Britain put forward the idea that America almost deserved September 11, having got off scot free for so many years. In my opinion, no one country deserves to have a landmark destroyed and over 3,000 people killed on it's soil in one day. When America asked "Why us"? in the days following September 11, the world could indeed empathise with this question. The world also knew that the redoubtable American spirit, embodied by the national flag, would soon gear up to find those responsible for the worst terrorist outrage in history. My mom turned on the TV and there it was a large smoke in the sky. At first I thought that it was just another fire in a building. When I got to school the 1st bell rung we have 5 minutes to get to class it was 1st period then I heard the intercom and Mr. Dolen our principal said please excuse this interruption I would like to inform you that America is under attack it was then that I remembered the TV and the huge smoke in the sky and I felt mad but at the same time I felt shocked. Around 9:20, my assistant manager came in and began spilling out what was happening and vague detail. To be honest, I really had no idea what the severity of the incident was till i came home that night and witnessed it on t.v. However, it did make me call home and check on everyone and surprisingly, my sister was supposed to be on a plane to Las Vegas from Missouri but cancelled. Whether or not that plane could have be hi-jacked, i'll never know but i am truly grateful. Upon seeing the explosions and the towers crumbling in a cloud of endless smoke, i began to cry. I could just not even fathom such a thing. I couldnt really tell why, but I knew something just wasnt right .I really didnt think twice about it ,so I continued getting dreesed and went on about my morning. I was driving to work and listening the the BBC World Service news report on my local public radio station, KGNU. Just before I turned into the drive at around 7:00 AM MDT, the announcer stated that they had report just in that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center in New York. "Well, probably just a small plane," I thought, "some poor idiot just learning to fly." As I settled into my cube and slapped on the headphones to listen to some music, I checked the news websites--there was very little information. Then I noticed people around me beginning to take off their headphones and speak to each other, while others gathered around cubes and stared at computer monitors. I felt unease in the air--it was actually palpable. I switched my radio station to a AM news channel, and the horrible news began to filter in slowly--it was a passenger jet, the building was in flames, ANOTHER plane hit...after that it became a blur of news and rumors. Our CEO announced via email that they had set up TV's in our events center, and anyone who wanted to go watch was welcome. I walked over, joining dozens of my colleauges, and we watched in horror and disbelief as first one, then another of the WTC towers fell. Lotts Elementary in Knoxville, TN. I started teaching at 8:00 a.m. and did not find out what was going on until a teacher whispered it to me as she dropped off her class for music. Not knowing what was to happen that day, I had chosen to teach a song called "Harmony." Here are the words: Verse 1: The time has come, let us begin, with all our voices joining in, to sing of love and brotherhood, and people doing what they should to help their fellow man be free and fill this land with harmony; the young, the old, the rich, the poor, making sounds never heard before. Chorus: Harmony, harmony, let's all join in harmony and sing away the hurt and fear. A great new day will soon be here. Verse 2: Like the shepherd guards his sheep, watch your children as they sleep, and like the potter turns his clay, help us shape a better day. Let us sing a song of love, for there's one thing I'm certain of: love will fill the hearts of men, and peace will come on earth once again. After I found out about the planes hitting the World Trade Center, it was all I could do to continue teaching the song without bursting into tears, but I had no choice. These were young children who in some cases did not yet know what had happened or at least did not know the grave importance of these events. I'm sure they saw the fear on my face, though. I will always be glad that we were singing that song on September 11, and I hope that those words will resonate loudly among their memories of that horrible day in their young lives. I was about to leave when my grandma told my mom and I to come into her room and look at the t.v. .What i saw was like a scene from a movie. My mind was still half asleep so i didn't think much about it. I thought it was an accident with few or zero deaths. After 1 minute of watching it, i headed for school. In every one of my classes, my teachers talked about it and even had the t.v. on to the news so we can watch it. I found out it was terrorists who crashed into the building on purpose and into the second tower a few minutes later. Learning was especially hard that day, the somber feeling was everywhere i went. I was planning on spending a lazy Tuesday reading and cleaning up my apartment because I did not have to be back at work until Wednesday. I woke at about 9:00 CST and turned on CNN, as I normally would. Aaron Brown was standing on the roof of a CNN office facing the now smoldering WTC, when right behind him, live, the South Tower collapsed. My stomach knotted up the way it does when you're expecting to get bad news. I felt sick. My grandfather had been one of the first Port Authority employees to have an office in 1WTC, up on the 84th floor. I had heard stories of how he had been shown his office which was located toward the outside of the building, before the glass had been put in place on his floor. Like me, he was terrified of heights and clung to a wall, asking to be relocated away from any windows. "Thank God he's not around to see this," I thought to myself. It seemed like a hollywood action movie horribly and ironically come to life. I spent the rest of the day staring up at the eerily calm blue sky. Iowa is "fly-over" country for many transcontinental routes, and on a normal day, the sky is laced with contrails. If so, tell us how. I used to like to go take photos of the birds catching fish out of the Mississippi at lock and dam 16 near Muscatine. It was relaxing, and you could spend hours there seeing nature and watching cargo barges get locked up and down the river. Because of anthrax or other scares, the dam is now closed to civilians. The horror of watching people who had no other option thrust themselves out of 90th story windows and float to the ground. That that should be something no one should ever have to see again. I was only in 6th grade, but I remember that day well. It seemed like an ordinary day. Except, boys were going around telling us we were going to war. I did not understand what they were saying. My principal came in with a somber look on her face. I knew something was wrong. She told us what happened and who attacked us. It was all sort of strange, but it did not really sink in until the day I got home. I watched it on every news channel over and over again. The picture had gotten imprinted in my mind. At that moment, I felt really selfish enough to thank my lucky stars that I was in Kansas, and far away from NYC or Washington D.C. However, that did not take away me shock and saddness. It all became overwhelming. I was only 12, but I still understood what was going on and how the world was feeling. I'm only but a year older, but it has impacted my life greatly. I am a thirteen year old girl living in Houston. However, I was living in Overland Park, Kansas at the time of the attack. A few months after Sept. 11th, my school created a banner for the workers at Ground Zero. The banner said, "Oak Park Warms Your Hearts With Our Mittens". I helped create that banner. I'm displayed in the photo with the kids holding up the mitten-filled banner. I'm the Asian girl with glasses. Yep. thats me. Its one thing to make a cute, warm holiday message. The phones slowed to a crawl and everyone was gathering in our large break room, there was atleast a hundred of us gathered and gasping in front of the TV as they were talking about the first tower. Then as I started to go back to my desk I saw the other plane hit right there in front of my eyes. It was devistating, I thought what town is next? Could it be us? What about my kids. I called the school to see that they were safe. I called my ex husband and he was already on his way to pick them up. He said he wanted them to be with one of us on this day of horror to ensure their feeling of safety. I tried to call my family in Atlanta and the phones were becoming impossible to get thru. I called my boyfriend and we cried together as he was listening to the radio on his job site. As I went back to the break room. Our company shut down the phones to give us time to deal with what was going on. As I saw the TV, the first tower come crashing down and although you could have dropped a pin on the floor and heard it all over our building at that moment. We were all as scared as one another. I spend a lot of time worrying about family, kids and people I feel close to, people I didn't worry about before this day. Now I felt I should forgive and forget all past grovels and start over fresh and loving everyone and cherishing every moment. I spent weeks engulfed in the news, radio, everything that had to do with that dredful day. I stopped watching regular TV shows or going out anywhere and my friends told me to escape from all of it and stop worrying that it wasn't healthy. I did but I remember that day every day. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. It started like most any other morning. I had finished my 11-7 work shift at our local nursing home and was reading the paper--savoring a cup of strong, black coffee with the tv mumbling softly in the background. My consciousness was redirected to a breaking news story--a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center---and I watched the activity unfold trying to imagine the panic, fear, and tragedy of the event those immediately involved must be experiencing---and, then, a second plane----------?????? My mind started to race---TWO planes hitting the Towers??? This COULDN'T be merely an unfortunate "accident"----I watched as Firemen, Policemen and regular "Joes" raced to help and was horrified when the first, then the second Tower, fell as rescuers tried to help--Then the Pentagon and Pa---Disbelief, fear, confusion and horror replaced my usual complacent demeanor. Of course, the horror of it all probably is, initially, most striking but, a year later, I recall the stories of those who helped, the incredible courage of the firemen, policemen, municipal employees, the public outpouring of national grief, support and pride. NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? I have routinely flown the Flag, but, certainly, after September 11th, seeing it waving proudly from my porch is comforting in a new way.
