NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. Living on the west coast, I was never very familiar with the Twin Towers. I've always thought of the Statue of Libirty and the Brooklyn bridge as the phenominal landmarks of New York, so when my boyfriend called me on the morning of September 11th I couldn't understand why he sounded so upset. My roommate, who is also from California, and I witnesed the attacks on our country via the morning news. We knew it was a big deal because the broadcasting on every channel was interrupted by the coverage of the now collapsing towers. Even then we did not realize the impact that this event would have on our country and the way we lived. In Los Angeles everything from the O.J. Simpson trial to the breakup of Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake can make wide media coverage. We didn't even know that there were offices and businesses in the towers. To us they were just two solid towers. We never put the connection together that people were in them. In California they'd never put people in buildings so tall, but then again New York does not have earthquakes. All I could think is "I'm going to pray for those people on that plane" and "It's going to take a long time to rebuild those towers". I kind of thouhgt that the people in the plane would be okay. I think the biggest reason that we were so desensitized to this event was that it was just inconceivable that the United States could be hit so hard by an "inferior" country. I have always realized that the United States was not perfect, with all the years of oppression and racism that it was built on, not to mention the 2001 presedential election that denied citizens of their constitutional right to vote. However, I always thought of it as a country that was way ahead of the game when it came to military defense. How could a terrorist get access to kill Americans? I just couldn't see it. As I follwed the news coverage, I watched in horror the testimony of people jumping from a hundred flights up to escape the burning buiding and people running from sharp debris. Shortly after the attacks, I went home to visit my family and realized that two sisters that graduated with me from high school lost their mother on September 11th. She was flying home to California after getting them adjusted in their college dorm in Boston. Those girls were the first faces that I could really connect with the tragedy and it hit home for me. Soon I heard the stories of other grieving mothers, siblings, friends, and children that lost a loved one and I then knew that it wasn't just New York that was affected it was the whole world. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think we need to remember the unity that arised following the attacks. People all over the United States came together to rebuild. If people couldn't actually comb throughg the debris, peopole were waiting in five hour lines to donate blood. I think it had to be the first time that the Red Cross had to turn away donors. If we remember this, we have already won the fight against terrorism. I did not fly the American flag following September 11th. I felt that would be inappropriate because I never flew it before and I knew I would eventually have to make the decision when to stop displaying it, and that would be treating September 11th as some type of trend. My attitude about the flag has always been a little less than patriotic. Although I am greatful to be an American and I love living in America, I live with the American history that once enslaved my people, stole the land of the Native Americans, robbed the Chinese of their labor on our railroad system, and imprisoned Japanese Americans. I apprecitate that the United States is working on making what the flag stands for exist in America, but I am reminded on a daily basis that this is still not "the land of the free" nor "one nation". If so we would all stop racial profiling. I think that this was evident after the attacks when Arab Americans were targeted in hate crimes and discriminated in airports. When did they stop being Americans? After the planes crashed through the towers, or when they continued to carry out their relegious beliefs and traditions? However, I do feel even more inlove with American people. We showed AMAZING unity after the attacks and I hope we never lose that. Share your experience. i was in class that day, my teacher ran in and turned on the t.v. i didnt knwo what was happening all i saw was one of the two towers burning. then we saw the second plane come in and crash into the other tower. people were shocked. some girls cried, guys were speechless. some people were just in so much shock they sat there motonless and emotionless. we saw both towers collpase, many of us just didnt knwo how to feel anger rushed over us when we heard of posible hijackings, sadness was still the most present. school was a wreck the following days. I go to a small school with less than 50 students. I was 13 and in 7th grade on September 11th 2002. At about 8:40 and our class joker entered saying "Hey, Guess what a plane has crashed into to world trade center". Of course no one believed him. He continued to tell us that it was terrorists. There was a haze of confusion. What is a terrorist? What's a world trade center? What is a plane? Other stupid questions followed. One was answered by one of our more knowledgeable class members, he explained: "that a world trade center was a center of world trade". One of the students had hearing problems, she had a receiver head set on and the teacher had a transmitter. The principal called the teacher outside. The teacher came forgetting to take off his transmitter. The principal told him that the towers rely were attacked. The deaf student herd and said "Oh my god". The class crowed around her. The teacher came back in and told us the news. For the rest of the day we looked for news on our laptops and washed TV. Our teacher demonstrated how terrorists would take over an aircraft. I was at school at the time I heard what happened and at first I thought it couldn't be real, but when I got home and turned the TV on it was real enough. The next thing that went through my head then is was my Uncle ok. He Lives in New York and frequently goes in and out of the twin towers of the World Trade Centre. Thankfully though he wasn't involved but a friend of his lost some of his friends in the twin towers. History that day was witnessed by me as a day that will always be remembered in my heart. I was walking down the school hallway when a 7th grade Social Studies teacher came out of his room saying the World Trade Center had been hit. I then went back into my room and turned on the T.V. I couldn't help but be glued to the T.V. I gave my students the oppurtunity to watch it if they wanted. Many did choose to watch the rest of the day and we talked a little about what was happening and how this was going to affect the U.S. A few students showed emotion but many didn't understand what really was going on. Yes, everytime I see a commercial jet go over our school which is in the path of our regional airport I can't shake those thoughts from my memory. Work for me is Fort Drum, 10th Mountain Division Dining Facility. I saw what happened on CNN, and told my co-workers we had just been attacked by terrorrists. I was dismissed. It was at that point that the second plane was seen moving to the second tower. When the second plane struck, I told my co-workers that we needed to pack our gear, because we were going to be deploying somehwere in the Near East. Everyone thought I was crazy. I just knew, while watching the devastation on TV, that we were about to embark into a long, very different war. Here is a passage that evokes the things that are going on: Quran (9:11) -- For it is written that a son of Arabia would awaken a fearsome Eagle. The wrath of the Eagle would be felt throughout the lands of Allah and lo, while some of the people trembled in despair still more rejoiced; for the wrath of the Eagle cleansed the lands of Allah; and there was peace . My job has now been to conduct a lot higher intense training for our entry level troops. While away at a recent Military School, I was tasked with setting up training that would be real world for new soldiers. I also have a very strong mistrust for arabic people. I am also very uncomfortable in places that I cannot see everything. I guess it would be safe to say, everywhere I look, I do a quick threat assessment. Some places, I do a very thorough threat assessment. I have changed my habits to make myself, and those around me a bit more secure, and safe. On September 11 i was in volleyball practice when one of my coaches came in and said that a plane had hit the Twin Towers in New York. After athletics i went to my second period class, leadership, and my teacher had the news turned on and we were watching the t.v. when the second plane hit. The morning of September 11 was bright and pleasant in Cincinnati, and I enjoyed my walk to work downtown. A few minutes after I walked in the door a co-worker's husband called to say a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center and terrorists were believed to be at fault. I felt nothing at first, just an overall numbness. I walked downstairs to my office, where another coworker had the radio tuned to National Public Radio. We heard that the towers were starting to collapse, which seemed unbelievable. As we listened to NPR, and friends and relatives called in with the latest news, the horrific nature of the day's events gradually was revealed. I went through the motions of work but it was very hard to keep my mind on anything but the terrorist attacks. After I got home I had to do some freelance work, and by then it was even harder to concentrate. After the work was done I lay down on the couch with the lights off and the radio on. I woke up and my mom was watching the news and all of a sudden an airplane went right into one of the twin towers. Then I saw people running and screaming it was horrible!!! I think we should all remember all the members of the NYFD and the NYPD. For risking or loosing there lives to help save others lives. They were brave and kept faith in there harts and with everyone who was in danger or dieng. My mom called to tell me about this most terrible act of terrorism. I wanted to run and get my children. I was sick for the families that had lost ther loved ones. I coulnt imagine the sadness they must be feeling. It was incredible the bravery of our fellow citizens. The Firemen and women, the Police to run in to try and save others while knowing they might not come out of this alive. I know I couldn't do the same if I was put in there place. The families of the pasengers on flight 93 I know are saddened also, but they saved our Country from another act of terrorism, who knows how many more of our fellow country men, women, children would have been lost if that plane was allowed to go on. Even the clouds were crying at 8:46 this morning. I was attending the first of two memorial services held today. I stood in the rain, at the Barnstable Municipal Airport, with a large group of residents listening to the names of our fellow Cape Codders who perished one year ago at The World Trade Center in New York City. The brass bell of the ladder truck of the Barnstable's Fire Department rang for each name, followed by a moment of silence...especially long moments it seemed to me. The names were of our husbands, our wives, our brothers, our sisters, and our best friends. As I stood there, my eyes fixed on the huge American flag which snapped in the wind at the end of the elevated ladder of the fire truck, emotions washed over me like rumors. I remembered the last conversation I had with Berry before her fateful trip on flight 11. We sat in a Wellfleet cafe, speaking together over mugs of hot strong coffee, about matters of consequence. Then, a long hug, and the usual "See ya !" were the last words we ever said to one another. I miss my friend. When we all lost her husband, Tony [Perkins], she was the tower of strength that kept family and friends together in spirit. She was charismatic and so full of the joy of life. For one moment today, people all over the world stopped to remember; we were humanity joined by loss and by love. I thought that was a bit much at the time, to close a show? I was 19, and our country was in the throws of the Viet Nam War. Today, at 55 years old, and after 9/11, I was actually was shocked to see a lack of respect for our flag by manufacturers who used the Americxan flag as part of their new logos or the newly designed packaging of their products, all First Ammendment aguements aside. Something about it didn't set well with me. On the 9/11 anniversay, I was again shocked to see that no one, especially those business owners along the major roads on the Cape, who use the American flag to bring attention to their businesses, had not taken the time to lower their flags for a day of national mouring; even many of the municiple flags of the town of Barnstable, MA on the Cape, were at full mast. I was at work in my small office when a co-worker's husband called me and said he had heard on the radio that two planes crashed into the WTC and he wanted me to find out if it was real. I ran into our CEO's office and turned on the TV and immediately saw the footage. I stood in shock and screamed out for my co-workers. At that moment the Pentagon was hit and all I could think or feel was "what is going on here?, what is happening?". I was in shock until the plane crashed in Pennsylvania, then I became terrified. I was truly scared, the most scared I have ever been. When the towers collasped so did my heart and my stomach, I was in pain. I couldn't stop sobbing. I went to pick up my son from his half day of school and when I stepped outside the air felt different to me, just from knowing what terror was happening. I have never shed so many tears in all my life. I have never held my son so tight. For the first time in my life, I new what fear felt like and what it is like to feel completely vulnerable. Twenty-four hours later I found out that all my friends and family exposed to danger were all accounted for. However, some friends of mine were unable to say the same and I mourned so deeply for everyone effected. Even people I didn't know. I cried watching the Olympics during the opening ceremonies and every time an American won the Gold. I cried at the 4th of July celebration, which meant so much for me to be there. I am writing all of this on the one-year anniversary, hoping for some closure. I still can't talk about it, but I am also appreciative over everything in my life. At first I didn't understand what was goin on because I was in school. I got home and my mom and dad were watching the tv. I didn't really care what they were watching because I didn't know what was goin on. I sat down and watched the news and the videos they had on the planes crashing into the buildings, and the buildings collapsing. I was shocked. Why would someone want to do such at thing to the United States? What did we do to them? You'd have to be sick to do such a thing and kill that many people. That next week I watched the news everyday to update myself on what was going on. Still today I can't imagine being there, or being in one of the buildings. As and individual, i taped the news and wrote in a journal about what happened on that day. I plan to share it with my children one day in the future and tell them about it and what had happened during my childhood. I remember feeling one, small tear glide down my face. That's all I could do at that moment as I stood in utter shock and disbelief that this horror could possibly be taking place. After the tragedies at the World Trade Center that took place on September 11th, I had felt so helpless not knowing what to do. I wanted to help, but had little money to donate and was unable to contribute at Ground Zero. As an American I suffered greatly and as a New Yorker I was simply beside myself. What could I do to help? I wanted to capture the moment and inspire at the same time. I wanted to share what was in my heart and hopefully help others in the process. So, I went back to my office and wrote a poem called "Towers of Angels." I sent the poem out to a handful of close friends, then they sent it out, then their friends sent it out and so on a so forth. Suddenly, I was bombarded with emails and people requesting to post or use the poem. I had no idea when I wrote "Towers of Angels," the influence it would have and the tremendous response it would receive from the World. Over the course of this past year, Towers of Angels has received numerous emails, traveled around the World via cyberspace, has been posted at various websites and read at countless memorial services - one of which was a Memorial where it was read by a member of the Guardian Angel Organization and I believe it was aired on MSNBC . Towers of Angels literally grew wings and spread through cyberspace. Flying at warp speed. It began to make its way around the World. An Australian schoolteacher contacted me thanking me for creating something she could read to her grammar school class, a childs Mother replied asking permission for her daughter to use it in a school project, an artist used it within a tribute and even Chicken Soup for the Soul contacted me about possibly including it in an upcoming inspirational book regarding the events. Fire, Police, and EMS offered thanks, as did victims families for allowing something beautiful and bright to overpower their despair and darkness. And then, the most amazing thing happened, I was informed from a Police Captain that Towers of Angels was being passed around by the men and women at Ground Zero . I Had been able to help at Ground Zero after all! I was so happy something so simple, could travel so far. Its so hard for me to keep up with where Towers of Angels has touched. Numerous people have read it publicly, yet I havent had a chance to verbally share it. I hope to one day. Since it has helped so many, my goal is to have Towers of Angels included in the official WTC Memorial. Its comforting to know that the Angels are still flying through cyberspace, hopefully spreading more inspiration with each flap of their wings... NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was a senior in high school, sitting in my first class of the day, Zoology. One of the other students in the class had headphones on and was listening to the radion as the teacher was lecturing. When the teacher noticed the lack of attention the student was paying to the lecture, she asked him why he was listening to the radio. He said that the tallest building in New York was on fire. We all thought nothing of it, really. The teacher laughed and said that if he was lying that he would be in trouble. She walked over to the television and turned it onto a news station. We could see the devestation of the Tower Two, and as we watched, the next plane crashed into Tower One. Then began the allegation that it could be a terrorist attack. My dad was a Government teacher at my high school, so I wrote him a note that said "Dad- I don't know if this would be important to you... but the WTC in New York was hit by two planes and they think that it is terrorists." I took it to him and he turned it on for his class. After that it really hit me... the United States, my country, my home, had been attacked. The rest of the day was a very interesting on. The school was silent... and for a school the size of mine, that never happens. No one did any work in our classes. We just stared transfixed on the events and the tragedy that was on the television. That afternoon, when I got out of school, I went to the store and bought newspapers. The store, as I would guess everywhere in America, was silent. I guess there really are no words to describe what it felt like to witness that... to hear that. I think wveryone was just filled with the knowledge that the nation would never be the same again. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I can't say that my life specifically has changed too drastically. I guess for everyone, life just has to go on. The major change for me was when my best friend joined the Army. He was at the University of GA, on the football team, popular, with good grades, but he felt that he was more needed serving the country. As he would say, he "just wanted to help out." I, like thousands of other people, have had to learn how to deal with life when someone you love is in the military. So, though I didn't lose anyone directly by the attacks on September 11th, I have lost years of time with my best friend. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The myriad things that should be remembered about September 11th are impossible to put into words. In order to understand what needs to be remembered, all one has to do it look through the pictures of that day, and the weeks that followed, or to read the names of all who died due to the attacks. Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? No, I didn't fly a flag after the attacks. I was actually disappointed by the display of patriotism after Sept. 11th. To me, it seems like people should be proud of and support the nation 365 days a year, not just on holidays, and definitely just after a national crisis. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I am a college teacher at the College of William and Mary and I was on my way to work in my vehicle when I heard a talk show radio disc jockey remark that a plane had crashed into the WTC. My first thoughts were remembering the small single engine plane that crashed into a Tampa Fla. skyline and thinking this was another freaky incident. I was to teach a tennis class and my students were filing in with a lot more information about the incident and were saying to me that something very,very bad has happened. They were crying and scared and very confused. I finally realized that I needed to cancel this class and allow everyone to contact their loved ones as a great majority of our student body come from up the eastern seaboard. When I was able to sense the full gravity of this act of cowardly terrriorism I was crying too. I cried for all those who were trapped and those who were fleeing and for the families left with little hope. We resumed classes at College in the next day or two and since that time I have a gut feeling that everyone is more caring and considerate and patient here now as a direct result of this horrendous act. I recently visited NYC and Ground 0 and the hushed talk and reverence around this site was incredible. I think we should just make the site a large park and remember all that died in a special way similiar to the Vietnam Memorial in DC. This is a moment in our time that we should always remember and we need to honor the brave souls that perished. We should also remember that the evil ones would strike again tomorrow if we let our guards down. Let's remember this day and this site and be even stronger as a grand country.
