NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. It started as every typical morning did. Alarm going off, getting up and getting ready for work. I was at work by 8:00 a.m. I first heard of the tragedies from a coworker as she watched it on the television in the waiting room at Somerset Hospital, where I work. Immediately the emotions took over. I feared for myself, my family, my friends and coworkers. I just wanted to be home all in one place with all of my family if anything were going to bring this world to an end. Instantanously I thought of my husband being he works for local news station. Sobbing, I tracked down my husband to find out where he was, where he was going, and where he was going to be. He said he and Jon Meyer were heading to the impact site in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. You see, we only live less than 5 miles from that site and I was terrified. Because no one knew what else was going to happen or what was yet to come over this world. Code yellow was called at the hospital and all the immediate personnel able to assist any living injured stayed at work and the rest of us went home early to be with our families. Schools everywhere were left out early once parents started picking up all their children to take them home so they too could be home with families. My husband finally came home after two days of continous news coverage. Coming and going, taking items from the house for some of the news anchors that were not prepared for the grueling work. How to prepare for site they came upon. Simply a gigantic crater in the earth with millions of tiny scraps of the victims and plane. My husband and his grandpa Flamm found debris from the plane a few miles away and return it to the proper place. Let us not forget New York and D.C. Even though they were in another state, I believe that is what affected me the most. Just to see thousands of people and rescuers innocently die for no reason. I was working in Switzerland and my colleagute told me, that he has just been called by his wife, telling him that a plane hit the wtc. We tried to get informations out of the internet and we managed to come to the cnn page close before it collabsed. I call my boyfriend - he was watching cnn. He called again to tell me that the second plane crashed and to tell me that the buildings collapsed. I was shocked - remembering how much time I spent in and around the wtc. Pictures came into my minde on what I did during the 6 month I spent in NYC in connection with the wtc - how many times I was sitting and chatting in the "windows of the world restaurant", how I went to school at murry street, how I used to have lunch at the river... I also tried to imagine, where I would have been considering that I was still at this school... That afternoon, I was not able to work again. I can't remember doing anything beside writing an meeting invitation which my boss had to check a few times as I was not able to concentrate anymore. At home, I watched TV and saw what I only have heared by then. Seeing it was much worse than only the thoughts about it. I was shocked the most after I saw people jumping out of the building. I have not been back to new york and I am still not able to really believe that the towers are not there anymore. If so, tell us how. I think it hasn't. I am lucky that none of my friends had to leave their life on September 11. I reached all of them within pretty short time to hear that they are ok. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. Overnight on September 10, I traveled to London on the first leg of a trip to Nigeria. On the 11th, I was walking around London enjoying the sights. I didn't learn what had happened in the U.S. until about 6:30 P.M. London time, so several hours after the event. When I finally reached my husband in Washington, D.C., where we live, he told me about the way the day was unfolding in the wake of the Pentagon attack. My son had blessedly been kept at school to await his afternoon bus (which normally passes right by the Pentagon), allowing my husband to remain at the office. As for me, I asked if I should return home, and he told me I couldn't: transatlantic flights were cancelled. So the next morning, September 12, I continued on to Abuja, Nigeria as scheduled, and spent the next week there on business. Once I got there, I wrote to my family saying it was the first time I felt safer in Africa than at homee. During the period of my stay in Nigeria, there was serious ethnic strife in the town of Jos, which left thousands of Nigerians dead. So the Nigerians I met, while expressing their condolences to me, also received mine. I remember one night at the hotel restaurant, when the waiter stood solemnly beside me and told me how very sad he was at my loss. I just started to cry right then and there. It was strange, for me and other American colleagues overseas, to experience the whole thing via CNN. When I got home, I knew I had missed an experience which had visibly marked everyone who had lived through it, including my family. Yes, in the sense that it is more evident than before that the U.S. is not a "safe haven" from the troubles of the world. Since my career involves assistance to developing countries, I am more aware than most Americans of the problems most of the world faces. Having it "come home" was different, though. I can also see how shaken my son still is - on a recent visit to New York, we went to Ground Zero and he just fell apart. He thought a plane was going to land on us, and he kept saying he didn't want all those people to die. It was heart-rending. I also watched Ken Burns' Civil War series all the way through again. It seems to me we badly need to re-connect to our values as a nation. I am concerned about the direction our foreign policy has been taking during 2002, however; I do not feel certain that we are learning the lessons of this event. We were all goofing off because it was the end of class, when our principal, Mr. Healey came on the intercom with the horrible news. he said that there had been a terrorist attack in Washington D.C. and in New York City. That's all he told us. we were all in both a state of shock and fear. what was happening? one of my good friend's dad was in the pentagon, and another of my friend's dad's office was in the section of the pentagon that was hit, but he went to the bathroom. and my brother lives in Arlington. he saw it happen from his office window. he saw the plane go right into the pentagon. so many of my friends and family were affected by this. it was a day i'll never forget. I wouldn't necessarilly say that my life has changed a whole lot. it has certainly made me much more aware of the news, and the goings on in the world, but it has not affected my actions in any way. i made a national choir in NYC in february 2003. the week i was to go into the city, the terror alert was raised to code red. my parents were petrified. they didn't want to go, plus my dad's health wasn't too great at the time, so i went in with my aunt and uncle. i had tried way too hard to make this choir. i wasn't going to let any terrorists take me down. if i was meant to die, i would've. my NYC trip was one of the greatest experiences of my life. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? i think the most important thing to be remembered after september 11th, was that even though our nation was nearly crippled, we all came together as 1. we put aside our differences (race, sex, etc.) and united together in the moments of despair. i think all nations should let that be an example to them. we didn't let it get us down. we moved on a stronger nation. i remember going on a bridge that was being built by my house, and the construction workers hung a flag in pride. it made everyone feel "warm and fuzzy inside." then one day the flag was gone. everyone was very upset, for that meant that someone had stolen it. we responded by buying more flags, not just one, and hanging them on the bridge, to show the culprits that we were moving on. i think unity i what should be remembered about september 11th. We didn't get to see pthe news, as it happened, and we had limited information because our school is very close to the Pentagon and many of us had loved ones there.When the principal announced that the Pentagon had been hit too I prayed because I knew people that worked there. Everyone I knew was okay. They allowed limited amounts of phone calls that day so I was very thankful I had acell phone and could call my parents to make sure everyone was okay. The school day went by kinda blurry and the bus ride home was shocking. There were no cars on the road and thats when it hit me. I cried all the way home. My parents were home when I arrived adn we all just sat glued to the television for the rest of the week. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life changed because I don't take everything for granted anymore. Alot of my friends from church were in the Marines and the Navy, so they were deployed. Every single one has made it back unharmed.I think I'm more cautious about what I say and do around people because I don't want to build up any hatred between races and cultures. I think we should remember the armed forces, firefighters, and police officers who risked their lives, and some lost them, to protect our Country. On September 11, I was teaching a water exercise class at the YMCA. I stopped in the office and said Hi to a colleague. She looked white in the face. I asked"Are You alright". "I was till a minute ago, she replied then went on to say a plane hit the WTT." We both went out to the Giant TV to watch the second plane go into the South Tower. Now I too was in shock. My cousin, Richard Appenzeller, is a NYFirefighter and he was there. Fortunately, he didn't enter the towers but saw them fall and helped people escape. Other friends, worked in the buildings but on lower floors and they were safe as well. The scares of that day still haunt us all. This summer I went to Ground Zero and really couldn't believe the towers that I worked near, that I enjoyed lunch in, that I gave speaches from Windows on the World were gone forever. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I had gone to Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, Virginia, to pick up x-rays. In the waiting area a t.v. was showing a picture of the first tower in flames. I left with my x-rays and when I got in the car, I turned the radio to all stations. I was bringing a Greek salad for lunch with my friend. We just kept the television on and really couldn't eat the salad. It was heartwrenching to watch. I really thought that the fatalities would be much higher. The one thought I can't get out of my mind is a picture of this woman sitting on a curb with people running all around her. Her clothes are burned off and her bare back is showing. She was holding her arms out. I can't get her out of my mind and would love to know that she is o.k. I try to live my life with more awareness of events around the world. I listen/read about events in other countries. But most of all, I try to be with my family and to help them in anyway I can. My husband is a lieutenant in the Newport News Police Department, my daughter is a corporal in the Hampton Police Department, and my son-in-law is a fireman/EMT in the Hampton Fire Department. The firemen, police officers, and medical technicians that rushed to help others should always be remembered and not just this first anniversary of September 11th (9-11). I am thankful that my family was not called upon to make such sacrifices as occurred in New York on that day in September. The attacks had a surreal quality to them until I went out to the parking lot of Northern Virginia Community College. The college is about ten miles from the Pentagon, and even from that distance, I could see the clouds of smoke rising from the fires at the Pentagon above the trees. What I had seen on television reports became real to me, and at the same time I became scared and horrified at what had happened. Also, I live under the flight path to Washington National Airport. Right after the attacks I was awed by just how quiet things were, except for the occasional military jet flying over head. The change was so dramatic and at the same time so unnerving. I was on my 2nd day of orientation for a new job, & the group of us waiting wondered why no one had come to take us to the orientation class...one girl left to find out & came running back saying"a plane has just hit one of the World Trade Center Towers".We all followed her to the lobby television, & were just in time to see the second plane hit LIVE,which was horrifying. Everyone in the nursing home who could be was gathered around the television for awhile. We went to class, & while we were in there, an announcement came over the loud speaker announcing an imminent prayer service"for our country" & the girl announcing it was weeping. We didn't know why until we took a break, & saw a replay of the collapsing of the towers,which gave me a chill to my bones that I will never forget. On my way home, I heard a man who had witnessed the crash of Flight 93, & HE was weeping, saying over & over"It was just obliterated".I looked at all the cars around me, & realized that all of us driving were listening to all the accounts, & I thought"I should just go home."My daughter & I were staying with my parents, & when my daughter got home from school, she came running into the house terrified, saying"Planes are crashing all over!" & she was afraid to go to the 2nd floor of the house. She was in 4th grade, & the school had let them watch the television coverage.I remeber us being glued to the TV for the next several days.Although we knew no one personally, Tom Burnett had gone to my brother & sisters' high school & was a "local" boy(Bloomington MN). My daughter & I had moved to MN to live with my parents. My 2 sons lived with their father in West Virginia. September 11 played a large part in my decision to move back to Virginia, to remain closer to my sons. I was sitting there in class during second period, just waiting for the morning anouncments when Mrs.Emmons, my teacher, turned on the t.v. We all were watching. It was so sad just imaginging that right at that exact moment people were dying and i was just sitting there watching it all happen. So i guess i witnessed it at about 9:00 during second period. I think one thing that should be remembered is how awful the terrorists were to us and what Afganistan and Osomabinladen wanted to see. So I don't think we should let them get off easy at all! Another big thing to be definately remembered is all the helpers and the life savers of September 11th. Like the fire fighters, police men, and even the blood donators or red cross. I was at work that morning when my boss called from home and told me to turn on the little TV we keep in the office. I couldn't believe it. I remember thinking that maybe this was like Orsen Well's "War of the World", that maybe it wasn't real. But you knew that it was. A short time later, my boss's father called and told me to tell him that his brother was ok. His brother works at the Pentagon. My boss is an attorney and I had to go up to the court room and let him know the Pentagon had gotten hit, too, but that his brother was ok. Horror struck me so deep, it was hard to feel anything but a kind of numbness that day. My husband is a fireman here in North Carolina, so I could, in a way, relate to those firemen in the WTC. For days and days, there was fear and sorrow and horror everywhere you went. Life, we were certain, would never really be the same. We live an hour or so from Charlotte, so we feel a little safer here than some who may live in the big cities. But I have developed an overwhelming desire to be of help. I didn't have an opportunity to help on 9-11-01, but when the space shuttle crashed in February and they asked for volunteers to go to Texas and look for the shuttle debris, I went. It was the first time I had ever done anything like that and it made me feel good that I was in some small way helping the families of the 7 lost astronauts. Now, I too, am joining our local volunteer fire department and I am currently enrolled in the EMT-B class. I pray for all those who lost loved ones, and hope that I may be able to do something for someone when I become an EMT-B. I don't take my loved ones for granted anymore and I always, always make sure I tell them I love them very much, as often as I can. The sacrifices made by the Firemen, Policemen and the people on the planes are what I think should be remembered most. The policemen and firemen knew there was a chance they could lose their lives, but they went in anyway. The people on the plane in PA must have most certainly knew they were going to die, but they did what they could to try to change the situation. And one of the students that I have in one of my classes came up to me and said "A plane just hit the World Trade Center in New York!" at first I didn't believe him because he had always been a joker in the classes that I had with him. So naturally I shrugged it off. But, he continued to pester me into turning on the T.V. in the resource center's presentation room. So to humor him I did so. And to my shock he wasn't lying! The World Trade Center had really been hit. In reaction I drew silent and fear came over me. I couldn't speak. I just watched as the moments of time had begun to stand still around me. Nothing could have prepaired me for what I was seeing on the screen. It felt so surreal, false, as if this was some cruel joke played by some network producer to make a quick rating hike. The room which I was in filled with students, faculty, staff and anyone who was walking by and had yet to hear the news was standing around me. The room was silent no words were spoken, no questions had been asked from all those who were standing in that room. The school soon calapsed. Classes were haulted, students were glued to the T.V., radio, internet, whatever they could get more information of the event that changed so many lives that day. Those who could not stand to watch or hear or think about the event left school. Students were dismissed left and right in fear that something was going to happen to them and their families. Students asked "why?", "Is that real?". I couldn't answer the first question but I could answer the latter. YES! It was real. Yes, it was happening. Yes, it was something to fear! How can you explain something like this to your family, friends, and students who's only thoughts where of why? I couldn't. I still can't answer that question. I could feel my inner most soul being ripped from the core of my heart. As I fight tears to support my family, my friends and my students who's lives had been turned upside down. Nothing and I mean nothing can ever take that feeling away. I still feel it. I still know that when I hear or see something about it I still have to fight the tears that flow from my soul. Because of these events, these feelings that are inside me have made it so I can no longer stand aside and watch as the world around us falturs. I stand strong with grace and dignity that makes me who I am. I am an AMERICAN. I am a part of this country, this land, this government and it's pledge of liberty, justice, and peace. Because September 11, 2001 has caused a scar apon my heart which is a reminder to what has happened and to what will not and can not happen again. On the morning of September 11, I was waking up to the sound of my dad's voice saying, " Wake Up The Twin Towers In New York City Have been hit!" Within the hour I was sitting in an akward silenced Social Studies classroom waiting for my vice principal to get on the intercom and tell us everything is going to be ok and no one was hurt. But I was wrong, he got on and said that, "the pentigon was crashed into and a plane crashed in Pensilvania and there were no servivors!" Everyone just stared at a wall or blacked out for a little while, wishing that school would just get out so that we could all just be with our families and cry together, but insted we made it through the day together. I was working the front desk and the xray tech walked through and said "You won't believe this, a plane just hit one of the twin towers in NY." I work in Washington, DC and on September 11, 2001, I was in a training class about five blocks away from my building. Around 10am a cellphone rang and the student answered it, said outloud "What did you say?" and then she turned to the class and said "The World Trade Towers have been blown up!" We were like, "what, how?" So we took a break and when I walked outside, the busyness of people walking and running down the street, heading towards the metro clearly told me something was terribly wrong. I tried, along with everyone else on the street, to use my cellphone to call my office but the lines were tied up. I finally got through to a friend some 40 miles away who said to "get the hell out of DC now. Terrorists have blown up the World Trade Towers and a plane has slammed into the Pentagon, get home now!" So I quickly ran upstairs to the training class and we were all dismissed; I grabbed my bag and ran out of the building, heading to my office which took about five minutes and was not allowed in the building. I walked (quickly) around to the parking garage and found my carpool; we got out of the garage but it took hours to get home. As we rounded one building, I could clearly see the black smoke pouring out of the Pentagon. I knew life as we had known it had changed forever. By the time I got home and my girls got off the bus from school, we hugged and were glued to the TV for the entire night. The next day, upon the advice of President Bush, I went back to work and to the training class; it was a very different day and we were on a heightened alert for months. We had just switched classes from first to second block at Mansfield High School, when my students came streaming in saying, "Mrs. DeLotto, we need to turn on the television." Of course, I resisted, but they seemed sincere, so I turned the television on. It was just before 9:00 CST. We watched in horror, and I spent most of the time stunned, putting my hand over my mouth to keep from screaming. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The most memorable part to me is the valor of everyday citizens. We were at our best that day. I hate that it takes something so drastic to wake us up from slumber and complacency. NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? No, I didn't fly a flag, as I felt it was a type of "jump on the bandwagon" movement. I remember her television was on, and she was looking up at the screen with tears in her eyes. I remember thinking that the report was a prompt for an essay. I thought the whole thing was fake at first, but then I realized it was real, and the whole class just sat there in shock while Mrs. Durrence regained her composer. We had a class discussion about it, and we did wind up writing an essay about what we felt about the whole situation. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. In all honesty, my life hasn't changed at all. The way I view certain things about our world and the way it works has altered somewhat, but the way I live my life has not changed. I don't beleive that tradgedy or fear should dictate our lives or the way that we live them. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The fear and after affects should be remembered. We should always know that someone else has the power to hurt us, and that is something to fear, but we must also believe that by coming together, we are stronger than any threat. My grandparents flew an American Flag after the attack on September 11. I remember watching them put it up, and I saw my Pepaw's eyes tear as he looked up at it, and my Devane took his arm, and they went back inside. My Pepaw was in Vietnam, and knowing the way he feels about our flag makes me feels strongly about it as well. Seeing him so close to tears tore me apart. I know that at the end of this war, that flag will fly high because we will be victorious. I can't wait for that day.
