I'm a sheet metal worker and was working at a doctor's office close to downtown Springfield, Illinois, finishing up the job by putting registers in the ceiling. I went out to the truck to get some material, and when I came back in, one of the ceiling guys asked me, "Did you hear what just happened in New York and Washington, DC?" When he filled me in, I knew immediately that the United States was under some kind of attack. We all stopped what we were doing and huddled around a radio a nurse had brought in, still not believing the horror of what we were hearing. How could this be happening, and where would it occur next? It was then that it dawned on us that state capitals might possibly be on someone's list somewhere and perhaps the entire country was in danger. The irony of this situation is that my husband and I were scheduled to fly to San Diego early on the morning of September 12 to witness his son (my stepson of course) graduate from United States Marine Corps boot camp. I was supposed to take off from work early to go and get some traveler's checks. Needless to say, I took off early that day anyway, but it wasn't to get on any planes. Instead a bunch of our friends met at one of our watering holes and we watched the whole thing unfold on big screen tvs that normally show sports programs. Would that that was what was on them that day! After trying unsuccessfully to deaden the pain at the bar, we went home and turned on the television there, hoping that in the time it took us to get home, we'd wake up and find it was all a horrible nightmare. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. It has changed for me emotionally and to a great extent. September 11th has even been in my dreams. I have been more aware of the people and events around me and also fight depression on a daily basis. On the other hand, my priorities have changed, too, and I try to live every day as if it were my last. I also give thanks for every day, and sometimes go out at night and look at the stars and say it out loud. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The only thing that the people who were killed did wrong was to show up for work and go about their daily routines. We need to remember them and those they left behind. The mail box is adorned with three American flags, and we have several in our yard. I also put in a red, white and blue flower garden this year and two flags in it. I put an American flag on my work truck and my personal vehicle. The one on my personal vehicle is a little ragged (I have a new one ready to put in its place), but it reminds me of the flag they found in the World Trade Center ruins, and IT IS STILL FLYING! NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. As a high school teacher, I was at work when the first plane hit the World Trade Center. I was sitting at my desk grading my student's summer reading assignments when a fellow teacher told me to turn on my TV because something terrible had just occurred. We had to teach our students for the remainder of the day and were asked not to have the television on in front of the students. It was especially hard because many, many of our students and staff members have family working at the Pentagon. We are located near several military bases outside of Washington, DC, so many of our students knew immediately that when they went home, their parent would be gone. I have paid more attention to prioritizing my life--really deciding what is important, like 'finishing this last bit of work' or 'spending a few extra minutes with my family'. We must remember the amazing bond so many Americans felt after the attacks--we were all just simply Americans and it did not matter what color any of us were or what religion we practiced. Thinking it was a beautiful morning, i grabbed my cereal and sat down to watch tv. i wanted i see what the wheather would be like. I tuned into channel four, and to my horror, i learnt that a plane hit one of the towers of the world trade center. i was dumbfounded i had no clue what was happening. I was listening to a news caster when all of a sudden a second plane hits the south tower. I was absolutely terrified. i thought maybe this was a joke. i knew this would never happen as an accident. Then my mind started to work and i realized this was a terrorist group. I then recalled that in 1993 there was also a previous bombing in the basement of the world trade center, and it was caused by the radical group known as AL Qaeda, whose leader was Bin Laden. This was just a theory i didn't realize this man would try again after not succeding the first time. I was furious no one has the right to take life into their own hands. I wanted this man dead. I was shocked at the nuber of lives that were going to be lost, there's no way this inccident could be justified. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life has changed in the sense that i am more sympathetic to the people aroud me, wondering if they will die tomorrow and if i won't see them again. I also realized that this country was truly blessed in the sense that everyone had the ability and strength to reach t6o the families that have lost their loved ones. People became friends through this tragedy. We as a country took more this tragedy than one can imagine. We found friendship and love in death. We found patrioticism, in a time need, and we found unity in time of division. I feel priviliged that i am in a country that cares for me. John F. Kennedy once said "Ask not what you're country can do for you but what you can do for your country." these words hit me hard after 9/11. Took J.F.K 's advice, and mi helpeed my country buy giving a shoulder to cry on, buy lending my ears to listen, and buy using my mouth for comfort. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The true heroes should be remembered, and i am not talking about just firefighters and police officers. I am talking about the common man, and the people that died for their country. Not many people recognize the common man as hero, but they are. By holding signs, attending vigils, and feeling another man's pain. I was thirteen when this disaster struck and i will always remember this age, because i was mature enough to fee for my country. In a way this tragedy was blessing in disguise because eventhough the whole world hates this country, I know i will always love my adopted country. It's ironic that i love a country that i have immigrated to rather then then country that i was born in. I will always be an Indian, but my love for America exceeds the love for India. My family and i did fly an American flag. The flag changed my point of view, because it showed that people where still full of courage and bravado even after the consequences of 9/11. I was sleeping in my bed when we recieved a phone call that a bomb had gone off in the world trade center... My exhusband and I turned on the television only to learn that it a plane had flown into the side of it. We watched in horror as the other tower was hit and then heard of the pentagon and then another plane.... All I could think of was Oh my God, Oh my God.... I didn't want my husband to leave me that day.. I was terrified to be alone. I kept saying to myself, where next and praying that it was over.. I never thought I would see the world trade center fall. My aunt had a godson that made it out... Then we found out that two friends were killed... I hate Osama, I wish him death, a slow painful death. May he feel the pain of the American people who loss so much on that day. New York will never be the same for me. I have gone there since a little girl to watch musicals and enjoy the sites and to perform. I went to see ground zero..... I morned the loss of not only my friends but for all those other innocent people. I feel like my world will never be the same and that we will never actually be safe from the wrath of another country that hates us so much. If I were wll enough I would be in some branch of the service...I'd lvoe to be the one who put the bullet through Osama head!!! Instead of saying Have a good day, I find people and myself saying have a safe day. I am afraid to fly now and I never was before. I hate almost no one... I thank my lucky stars that my aunts godson made it out and that no other places in the US were bombed... And I cry, I shed tears for all those who will never come home again... I also feel that as American's, many of us are now closer, more friendly and more caring and compassionate. The USA has changed, we will never be the same. Septemeber 11 should be a day of rememberance for all those lives lost, the heros who searched for hours, those who rushed in, those who donated time, food, money, etc and those who had the horrible job of having to clean up. I flew flags, lit candles, said prayers..... One of my fellow classmates came back from the rest room and told every one that the World Trade Center had been hit by an air plane. We were in school when the planes hit and none of the teachers would tell us exactly what had happened. We were all scared because we had only knowledge that something had happened at the Pentagon and the World Trade Center. When I got home, I watched the news and saw the planes strike the Twin Towers. My mom had been home and was saying that she couldn't get a hold of my dad because the phone lines were tied up. My aunt from Texas called to ask if we were alright and my grandparents from West Virginia did the same. I was in disbelieve as I was watching the news reports. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. My name is Kim Roberson, and I was part of 9/11. On the morning of September 11, 2001, I was working in my office on the 7th floor of the Arlington County Police Department. When I arrived at work just after 9 a.m., there were already 8 people in my office, watching my television. I was the public Information Officer for the ACPD, and had the only TV working on the 7th floor. I had seen the incidents at the WTC on the TV in my apartment as I was dressing for work, and had called ahead to my co-workers, who were not aware of what was happening. As I joined my coworkers in my office, we watched in horror as people fled from NYC. A friend and co-worker who had the morning off paged me just before 9:30 a.m. with the words "Are you watching this?!?!" Little did we know that we were about to become a part of "this". Then, at 9:40 a.m., a fellow co-worker came running to my door. "A plane just hit the Pentagon". He says we looked at him like he was speaking some foreign tongue. He repeated his comment again, and we all got up and fled to the closest window. You see, the ACPD overlooks Ft. Myer and Arlington National Cemetery, which are the only things separating us from the Pentagon. I distinctly remember 2 things from that moment: seeing the cloud of black smoke, and hearing the police radio in the next cubicle going crazy. The dispatcher was calling units to the crash site as we watched the incident unfold. As a civilian, I was not allowed to respond to the Pentagon, but I watched my friends and co-workers go, without a thought to their own safety. They went to do their job...to protect the people who lived and worked in Arlington County. And, as I watched everything on TV, I was terrified for them. Phones didn't work. Cell phones didn't work. Our two-way pagers were the only way to talk to one another. And that was how I found out what was going on at the scene, and that my friends and co-workers were safe as the day progressed. Luckilly, not one of them suffered an injury during their two week rescue effort at the Pentagon. On September 12, I got my first, up close look at the Pentagon. I'll never forget the smell of standing infront of the impact point, or the sight of the rescue workers searching high and low for victims. We were the lucky target. I remember thinking "I cant even imaging, seeing what I'm seeing and feeling what I'm feeling, what the people in New York must be going through." As I look at the rebuilt Pentagon today, I can close my eyes and see what it looked like almost one year ago. And I'm amazed at how far we have come in such a relatively short time. As we approach the one year anniversary, I find it hard to believe a year has passed. And yet it seems so long ago. I remember where I was when the Space Shuttle blew up. I lived through Hurricane Andrew. But nothing has changed the way I look at life as much as one hour on a sunny September morning in 2001 has. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think the sacrifices of all of the men and women who died trying to save strangers should be remembered. The firefighters and police in New York...the men and women on flight 93 in Pennsylvania. And the men and women in Arlington County, Virginia, who did their best to save the people in the Pentagon. When I moved into my new house, I hung a flag outside. When Arlington County Police created a specially designed commemorative sticker in the shape of a Pentagon, I put it on my back window. befroe that day, I had never put a bumper sticker on my car. And when I was given another Pentagon shaped sticker that labeled me as a Pentagon rescuer, I also put that on my car. I am proud of my part in 9/11, and very proud to be an American. We were doing our normal thing, well, somewhat normal we had only been in school for about a week. My teacher turned on the t.v. to witness this startling incident. It was funny how, less than a year ago, I had no idea what the World Trade Centers were, or what they were there for. Now, I've heard about them so much, and so often that sometimes I just want to plug my ears and escape the reality of it all. The rest of the day, we watched the news. When I got home, my family was watching the news. You couldn't escape this and live your norml life. I thought it was very scary, and it gave me a big reality check. I just dropped of my 3-month old girl at the babysitter and I was driving on my way to work listening to a sports radio station. The D.J. said, "Hey, somebody just flew into one of the Twin Towers. What idiot would fly that close to them?" I thought that it must have been a private plane causing minimal damage. When I got to work, I heard that the second tower was hit. Suddenly, I knew this was no private plane. We turned the TV on at work and unfortunately, what I heard was true. I immediately called my wife and said, "Leave work, get the baby, go get your kids out of school and go home!" She was worried about her boss and I said, "I don't care if you get fired, JUST GO!" She did just that and found that other moms were waiting at the school to get their kids, too. In the mean time, the TV at work had a bad reception so an associate of mine and I left work to go to my house and check out the news. We turned on CNN and couldnt believe our eyes. I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone or something. It looked like a movie. It just didnt seem real. We also heard about the other planes at the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania. We watched for a while and then he went back to the office. I waited around at home for my wife just to see that she got home OK with the kids. When she arrived, we all embraced and I went back to the office as well. I work only 5 minutes away, or else I probably would have stayed home also. I changed from my normal routine of sports and rock radio and I followed nothing other than the news channels, the Internet, and the news radio stations over the next two weeks. I had to know what was going on at all times. I was addicted to all of this. We went out on that Friday night (3 days later) and sang "God Bless America" and other songs as we lit candles. Our living room is now decorated in "War Time events, more specifically, 9/11. We were going to go with some other art but 9/11 changed all of that as we decided that it was time to honor our country. Needless to say, I had a hard time sleeping in the months that followed and woke up during the night every time a plane flew over our house on the way to Newark Airport. I had to cancel a flight to Chicago just 10 days after 9/11 because I didnt want to leave my baby and family. I still havent flown but plan to this November. The most startling thing was that I had just brought a newborn into this world and I was beginning to wonder why I would do that to her. At the same time, I realized that this is America and we will be vigilant. Madison (my baby girl) couldn't have begun her life in a better place. Secondly, the heroes such as the NYPD, NYFD, EMS, other Police and Firemen who came from other areas to help, and Todd Beamer and his team of heroes should be remembered. What also should be remembered is the fact that while evildoers were trying to tear us apart, our Great Country came together as one. Flags, candles, donations, and physical labor at Ground Zero were a sign that we will not "survive" but we will "thrive". USA stands for UNITED States for a reason. I was at work in Reston, VA (just outside of Washington, DC) when I overheard several co-workers saying that the WTC had just been hit by a plane. At first I couldnt believe it. I got on a news site on my computer and was just absorbing it when the second plane hit. At that point I knew it wasnt an accident. We all knew something huge was happening to our nation. I had dropped my wife off earlier at Dulles International Airport and she was enroute to Chicago on a layover flight to the west coast. I tryed to call her cell phone but all circuits were down and she was probably still in the air. Meanwhile reports were coming in about one plane unaccounted for and another plane had just hit the Pentagon. My baby was staying with my parents (while my wife was traveling) who live about 1 mile from the Pentagon. I finaly got through to them. They didnt know what had just occured but had heard a loud noise and my father was seeing fighter aircraft flying over his home. My brother called me. He works about 3 miles from the Pentagon and saw the jet fly very low and very fast over his building. He and his co-workers were trying to figure out what was happening with the aircraft when his building was rocked by the explosion of the plane hitting the Pentagon. By now I was becoming almost frantic in trying to contact my wife. We then heard about the plane that went down in PA. It seemed as though as soon as one piece of bad news came in another one would come in. My wife finally called fron Chicago. She had seen some of the news on a T.V. in the airport. All flights were grounded and then they turned off all the T.V.s in the airport. She was able to stay with friends and came home via train 4 days later. The luggage came home in 6 days. The scary thing is that she was going to take the flight that hit the Pentagon but changed it to the layover flight via Chicago. I always turn on the t.v. in the kitchen while I drink my orange juice to see the latest news. When the t.v. came on the first of the two towers was on fire and smoking. I could not believe what I was watching. The first thought was it was an accident simular to the B17 bomber hitting the Empire State building during WWII. I couldn't understand how it could happen because the sky was clear blue. Then...the second attack happen right in front of me. I yelled for my sister to come right away. I became weak and my body was covered with goose bumps. I started to cry inside and it took all my strength to keep it from showing. I wanted to be there to help and I felt the pain of those which I knew were not likely to escape. I could not move as the event played out. I became so angry. I wanted to fight back but against who? At that moment I decided that I would not be passive. I will do something, somehow but didn't know what. As I drove to school I had tears in my eyes. Powerless to repel those who hate us. Fearful of another attack. Regretful towards those Americans whom had been targets in the past. My focus on life turned from all me, my work, and personal goals to "us", Americans. I thought of everyone as my brother and sister. It made no difference who you were, what color or race, we are related. Your city became my city and your problems became mine. No matter who or what is yet to confront us we will be confronted together. I learned what a real hero was and I decided to contribute no matter what the cost or how long it would take. Yes, my sister attached an American flag on the her mail box. My feelings about the flag didn't change so much as expanded. Post September I would leave work at 2:00 am and things would be so quite and calm. I would pass a car sales lot which has always flew a huge American flag. My eyes would tear from sadness every night as I passed. When I would go to work each day and saw so many flags on houses and cars my eyes would tear from being so proud of those who displayed the flags. Experiencing these feelings inspired me to contribute by designing a "911 Memorial Victory Flag" and another version called a "911 Battle Victory Flag". I want to preserve the emotions and memories we all had experienced on September 11,2001 and I want to express our support to those directly fighting our enemies in the war on terrorism. I present these flags to recognize organizations for their contributions to our daily lives and to our defense. I was told that one might even be displayed in your "911 display" at the Smithsonian. It was one that I presented to the Association of Flight Attendents. I am so proud of our Flight Attendents and wish them the best during these times. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I am one in a family whose members experienced September 11th very differently. Some experienced the events from as far away as the island of Hawaii while another was as close as four blocks from the World Trade Center site. We are more than a dozen siblings and spouses whose religious beliefs span the spectrum. Not only do we practice under different faiths, but the extent of our beliefs range from dedicated religious observance to unconvinced atheism. Despite our differences, we are a close family. Like all other Americans, we have shared our thoughts with each other and tried to make sense of what happened in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania and what we should do next. Our discussions have been at times contentious, sometimes sorrowful and at other times our talks have left us in a state of despondency. As the one-year anniversary approaches, I sense our fears and feelings of confusion are becoming acute. I am reminded of the emotions that we have expressed these past 12 months: hatred, a need for retribution, anger, fear, confusion, and a lack of control. In our email messages to one another in the days following the attack, I expressed the thought that we should not let our feelings of retribution and anger diminish our humanity. I still believe that today. We did not have a choice when the terrorists decided to attack us, but only we can choose how to respond. I do not mean a response with weapons and greater security measures, but the way in which we respond with our hearts and our souls. We need to deploy weapons, military services and security forces to help prevent another act like this from occurring again. However, if we prosecute a war against terrorism yet fail to fight the concomitant attack on our hearts and souls, we will have lost the battle that really matters. We cannot let any people or nation threaten an America where people live under democratic principles that celebrate freedom, liberty and tolerance. Bringing arms to bear against terrorism is only part of our response. We must also address the spiritual and the emotional. We must summon all our courage and bravery and not harden our hearts to those who are the natural targets of our anger. We must accept the challenge that has been laid before us and, in picking up the gauntlet, remember that what makes us great as Americans is our compassion and love. Although we mourn the almost 3,000 lives who were taken from us on September 11th, the tragic events of a year ago will not diminish us. We have and will continue to reach for our courage and our faith knowing that our optimism, our hope and our spirit can never be extinguished. There has been an American flag flying from my house ever since September 11, 2001. I haven't had the heart to take it down. What is remarkable to me is not that I flew an American flag after I became aware of the terrible attacks, but how I came to display the flag on that day. I cannot really recall when in the day I decided to get my flag out of storage and place it into the mounting that is attached to my house. I have flown the flag on the usual holidays, but on that particular day I raised it less intentionally. As I watched the day's events unfurl, I just put the flag up. And so did many other people on my street only hours later. This little act said a great deal to me about my relationship with my neighbors and community and the spirit of hope among Americans for the future of American ideals and a better world for tomorrow. It was about 5:30 am when i woke up to the news about the World Trade Center. I went to say "Good Morning" to my mom and she told me that an airplane had crashed into the World Trade Center. I remeber asking her what the World Trade Center was. When I first heard about it, I remeber thinking that the airplane crash was a navigational system mess up. But I soon found out that I was wrong. When I got to school, I heard that the planes delibratly aiming for the World Trade Center. Later I heard that another plane had hit the pentagon.Now I already knew what the Pentagon was so I started to get a little worried. I was in 4th period when my teacher Mr. Dunn put on the radio to KIIS FM and Rick Dees and Ellen K were covering the updates for the day. About mid way into class, a lady called the station and told that she was really worried for she had her mother and sister that she needed to contact and as I was sitting there thinking of all the people in the center and how many family memebers died in the plane crashes, I started to cry but I didnt want anyone to see me. Later that day, I found out that the Trade Centers fell. About 1 year later, my school held a memorial service for all those who died they showed clips of the Trade Center. It showed men knowing that they were gonna die just jump from the Twin Towers. This will be the day that I know I will always remember!!! They kept us in classes the whole day before finaly telling us! I was in 8th grade. A lot of kids were pulled out of school and I had no idea why. When the day finally was over and announments came on they had told us what happened. I didnt think much of it at the moment because they were very brief on details. I started my day off at work across the river from NYC in Jersey City, NJ. My office had a big picture window where you can see two trees on each side of the window and in the cener of the trees were the upper floors of the Twin Towers. The morning going as usual, until our receptionist called to me and said that a plane just hit the Twin Towers - she found out from her son in Georgia who'd called to tell her. Well we all thought that it was a helicpoter or a small sesna - an accident. Well, it was time for a cigarette break anyway and went outside to the front of my building and saw the smoke and fire. I was joined by another co-worker as we were talking - I kind of nudged her arm and said " What the hell is that?" Too my horror I witnessed the second plane. I screamed as loud as possible and grabbed my head in fear! I remember thinking - "Oh My God, all those people." Then it set in - we've been hit - those Bastards! As I stood there watching the flames the unthinkable happened - the first tower crumbled to the ground - we felt the shaking of the ground all the way across the river - Shear grief took over my body - completely uncontrollable - the tears flowing from my body - I could not imagine that in my life time - I would expereince something so devastating.Then the second tower fell - day turned into night right before my eyes. I have no tolorence - an eye for an eye - I don't want to be like this and I am trying not to be. I am very aware of my surroundings, I try to pay attention to who, what, when where! - We are vulnerable! America's way of life has changed. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The people that did this horrific act - in my opinion - tried to break us a whole - DIDN'T HAPPEN! The thing that is most memorable is how we all came together as one - not just America - the World! The human spirit can not be broken - it is amazing the resilience that we as a nation has. Absolutely, I had a flag on everything - My feelings towards the American flag - probably the most beautiful piece of art that I have ever seen - I can't look at it without reflecting and sometimes shedding a tear - Just the same with the Star Spangled Banner - the most poigniant song ever written! I walked into my lunch period around 10:15 and saw a plane crash into the World Trade Center on the television. I wasnt sure what happened because they shut off the television and didn't tell us what was going on. They, the teachers, were told not to talk about the event just incase the students parents or friends were working there. I was in suspense until my 9th period class when we talked about it and watched it ont he news. I was shocked and couldn't believe someone could do such a thing. Whenever I see a plane I get nervous. My mothere and I went to the airport to drop her friends off, and when I walked into the airport there is more security around. I was afraid that something might happen to my mom's friend, but nothing happened. Also since then I have learned not ot take life into granted. You never know hwat the next day is going to bring. You have to live each day to the fulliest, because the next day you might not be here. One more way that my life has changed, is that i take more pride in my country. Everyday when i stand up to say the Pledge of Alligance, I think of all the people who were killed or were at the WTC on the day that the attack happened. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think that the innocent people that were killed in the September 11 tragedy should be remembered. They just went to a normal days work and they never came home. Also I think that the brave firefighters, EMTs, and the police that risked their lives to save others, should be remembered. Some of them went into the falllin building to other people's lives and and some lost their lives too. They should be remembered for thier heroism and bravey.
