I was in first period at Mansfield High School, and my teacher turned on the T.V. after he heard from one of the other teachers. My life is still the same about, but now I give a lot more respect to my counrty. For a while at school, everyone was nice to everyone, but now it is back to the same. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was in school (in the 8th grade), in my algebra class. We were already into the class. Then the anouncments came on and our Dean of Students told us that the World Trade Center was hit bye a plane. So our Algebra teacher turned on the T.V. to watch the news. We all saw the buildings developing the black smoke. My teacher said, "This is very serious"I remember the news reporter saying,"people on the room are waiting for the helicopter to come" or something like that. When I heard about the attack I was stunned and felt sorry about the people that were on the plane. Then they also showed that pentagon was in flames and said it was bombed. That surprised me. the reporters said people were jumoing out of the building which just shocked me. Then we saw the building fall. I remember the reporter saying,"The building has collapsed." Then another reporter saying, " A side of the building has collapsed?" "No the whole building is gone" I was just frozen then. Then the class was over and I had to go to Language Arts. My teacher said our homework assignment was to "watch the news." My Language Arts teacher didn't let us watch the T.V., but let us express our feelings in writing and we went to class work. Then I had to go to lunch and that was the the talk during lunch. We were extremely surprised that the pentagon was bombed and tried to figure out how. Then I had to go back up to the same teacher that was teaching us Algebra, for science, and he let us watch some more news of the attacks. Before we got to class we knew that the second building had collapsed. There, i think, is where we learned that the pentagon was not bombed but a plane flew into it. We also learned that another plane was missing, and every plane was grounded. After that the news kept on repeating it self. Then I had to go to History and there we discussed about the attacks and security of the pentagon. Eventually I got home and turned on the news. At home was the first time I saw the replay of a plane hitting one of the towers. After the news kept on repeating it self I went outside to talk to my nieghbors. All of them seemed stunned. From one of my nieghbors I learned that they shut down Disney Land. Which surprised me at first but later made sence. Then I went home. And learned that a plane had crashed in Penn. Then later on that night I was watching the news and an bombing was made on, I think it was, Pakistan. Which scared me a little. Then I thought of something very interesting. A few days ago I watched a tape what was made in the 1980's about Nastrodamas (sorry for the spelling). That made the predictions, for example the fall of the Soviet Union. Now remember the tape was made in 1980 and the fall didn't come till 1991 which surprised me. Then there was a prediction of "man made towers" (Skyscrapers) in New York would be in flames with huge black smoke. Which relates to the attack on the towers. But the video thought it might have been a nuclear strike. After that I kept on watching the news for more information about the attacks. Through the school year the attackes came in several discussions, for example vocab words, or in history about the goverment. But I don't think it really had changed my life. Just made an extra thing to be sad about. I never was there when the attack happend and I didn't lose anyone, so i don't think it could have changed my life, but I do feel sad about the people that lost there lives without any clues or a thought of a possible death. I woke up with my dad yelling kids wake up and come down stairs. my brother and I both came down still sleepy but the moment our eyes saw the TV screen we imidetly woke up and just said oh my god. we watched in horror at the TV the sencend tower was being hit. when we got to school that day our teachers had pluged in a tv and were watching it. our teachers were in such shoke we didn't even have a leson that day. I had just finished watching game film with my players when someone came out of the training room and said a plane hit the world trade center. I went to the coaches' office and turned on the news. The second plane had already hit and both buildings were burning. I told someone then that it looked like one of the buildings was leaning. We then heard that a plane crashed in Washington. It seamed like the entire country was under attack. The bell rang and I went to second period and turned on the tv. My class sat in silence as the first building came down. On September 11th 2001 Mr. Sherman (our principal) said over the announcements that the Pentagon and the two towers of the World Trade Center had been hit by a jet plane. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. It was 9:18 am in Math class at Parkview Middle School in Ankeny, Iowa. Our Principle got on the annoucements telling us we need to turn the t.v. on because something terrible had happened in New York City. When the t.v. was turned we saw CNN's coverage of the attacks right away we saw the images of the planes hitting the World Trade Center. At that time I had only heard of the Trade Center a few times and had to think of what it was. Watching the t.v. I heard the news people telling how over 50,000 people worked in that building daily, I thought about how many people must have died. My math teacher then muted the T.V. and got on with class, the whole time my eyes were fixed on the screen as shots of the Petegon came in, it almost was like I was watching a movie. After school I turned on the T.V. and watched it for the rest of the night. The whole evening the news was telling of how big the death toll could be. Seeing the shots of a pile of rubble so large was so different. When I went to bed I layed there thinking about the day and then slowly fell asleep. In April I competed in an area technology fair, my project was a video I made by taking pictures of the planes, the destruction, the grieving and the aftermath and putting them together. My project showed pictures from people grieving all over the world. The project showed that we were not the only country that lost lives but alot of countries did. The project won first place and judges choice. While I made the project it really brought to life how horrible this was. On memorial day weekend I had the chance to see the World Trade Center Site, it was so quiet on the viewing platform I was there just as they were finishing the clean up and to see such a large hole was so odd. Looking at the huge memorial wall that was built up with pictures and candles in front of the church really showed just how many people had died. Before September 11, 2001 we lived in a socity were no one had to worry about terroism. It was almost like we thought that every country liked us. I think that now we all live nowing that people don't like us and that there are people that want to try to kill Americans. I think it is a shame that it took the loss of over 3,000 lives to realize it. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think that the loss of life should be remember. I think that all of those 300 firefighters should be remember for their heroism, and courge they showed. Then it happened,it came on the tv an every body gasped. So every body was talking about it during school that day. Every class I had after that had the tv on the hole period. Being 37 weeks pregnant and unbalanced, I managed to waddle to the opposite side of the suite just as a television was being brought out. What seemed like hours passed as we all watched in horror as the news of the planes that had crashed. As the morning crept on my unborn daughter started to acknowleged the stress of the day by threatening to appear. I managed to break away from the horrific sights and toddle back to my desk. I attempted to call my husband, mother and other members of my family. I felt an overwhelming need to contact with those closest to me. Near my desk was the office of our Client who as of yet was unaware of the tragedy unfolding. I walked into his office and brought him into the circle that was forming around another television that had appeared. We all watched in horror as the first tower came down. A friend who was holding my hand collapsed against me and began to cry. "All those people" was all she could say. Stunned to my core, I could only stand there and feel the now insistent tightening of my large belly as the yet unborn Amelia Rose again protested what was going on. The day was spent calming the fears of others and walking between widely seperated television sets. I madly and pointlessly, attempted to work and bring some normalcy to that day. By 3pm, my contractions were fierce and frequent. I managed to find my boss to tell her that I needed to go home as I did not want to have a baby today of all days. I got home in time to view some of the most horrific footage that was just coming in and stand in awe with my husband. Words were just useless tools that day. Ineffectual and pointless. No language has words that can describe what it is like to witness something like that. My heart broke for the world that day. I cried many days watching and listening to the unfolding horror. Amelia Rose was born 2 weeks to the day after 9/11/01. Her father and I have saved newspapers and magazines from that time so that she can understand the strangeness that surrounded her birth. Amelia Rose is the silver lining for me. She represents an open heart in a troubled world. The chance to heal our world by loving our children,teaching them tolerance and respect for human life. I was in the nurse office when they were "confirming" the second tower was hit and then it was all over tv in each classroom.When I got my mom and I talked aout what happened. It was 8th grade school year that started for me and the mild Californian summer days are no more. As I woke up on this day; I first went to my window and peeked into the beautiful morning sky. It both glistened and gloomed and the sun was not visible like usual on a Californian morning. As I took off to school ecited to see my friends; the bell had just rang for first period. As I walked to my class; a girl sobbing and was full of tears was walking behind me. I was concerned about the girl crying her heart out and wanted to see what the problem was, but i didn't want to scare her even more possibly by asking her. As I entered my second period classroom; I saw the same girl that was crying and we were informed by the teacher that she is a new student in our class. It was then when my teacher received a phone call. She answered it and quickly was in a state of shock. I was curious what the other person on the other line was saying, and all of a sudden she headed to open the T.V. She turned to the news and explained how a plane crashed at the 1st World Trade Center. I was horrified hearing those words come from the mouth of my teacher and was left in utter shock. I was speechless and the first thing that came to my mind was that girl crying her poor heart out. I started crying myself when we were told by the teacher that this was a terrorist attack. For the rest of the day at school i saw sad, shocked and angry faces and everyone was talking about the plane crash into the World Trade Center. When I came home from school I saw my father by the T.V crying and saying "Der Voghormya"; meaning Lord have mercy in the ancient Indo-European Armenian language. He asked how my day at school was and I explained how it could be no worse and sad. When he told me have you heard about the 2nd plane crashing into the 2nd World Trade Center; I was heart broken from there and couldn't believe it. The next day I saw the same girl who cryed walking passed me and I asked her if she was ok. She replyed "Yes I'm fine, but my aunts not. She'd probably be in a better place now and I was left in pain hearing this, because it was then when i found out that her aunt was killed while being in the 1st World Trade Center. As I came home from school the same day; I opened the T.V and saw people jumping from the World Trade Center. My town, Far Rockaway, NY, was only a few miles away from Kennedy Airport, so the sound of jets taking off and landing was commonplace and didnt warrant any particular notice or concern, except when the roar of the engines drowned out a crucial scene during a TV show. I now live in Manhattan and its been many years since I heard a jet flying low enough to catch my attention. But one did on September 11, 2001. I was leaving my house to go to work at Two World Trade Center and just as I turned the key in the lock on my front door a very low flying jet went over my house. I remember thinking that the jet was flying way too low for Manhattan as it rumbled loudly overhead. But, like a true New Yorker, I just shook off the experience and proceeded to go to work exiting through the garden in the back of my building. As I stepped into the garden, my first thought was what a beautiful a day it was. The sky was clear and the air was dry -- very nice for a late summer morning. September 11th is my niece Debbies birthday and I was thinking about the plans we made to celebrate. I was approaching Second Avenue and 11th Street when I noticed a group of people on the corner talking excitedly. One of them was flailing his arms around and pointing to the sky. I wondered what was going on, but again, like a true New Yorker, I decided to mind my own business and continue on to work. As I stood on the corner and waited for the light to change I heard one member of the group mention the World Trade Center. Hearing that, I turned and asked him what happened and he said that a jet just crashed into the World Trade Center. He described how he watched the troubled plane flying over our neighborhood and that it was bobbing up and down and its wings were tipping from side to side. I couldnt believe what I just heard so I started walking south on Second Avenue to see if I could see anything and thats when I saw thick black smoke pouring out of the top of Tower One. For a split second I was torn between going to work or turning around and going home. In the confusion of the moment I didnt know what to do, so I went into a local deli where the radio was on and the reporter confirmed what my eyes saw but my mind did not want to believe. I started walking back home in tears saying Oh, my God over and over again. Back in my apartment, I put the TV on and began to watch the rest of the horrors of that day play out. I watched as Two World Trade Center exploded. My first thought was that it was related to the first crash. It just seemed logical -- what else could it be? But when it was confirmed that a second plane hit Tower Two, I, like everyone else, knew that we were under attack. I saw that the plane hit above the 80th floor and I was praying that everyone in my office got out in time. I was trying to remember all of our early birds - employees who came to work before 9:15 a.m. After that, I remember thinking that I could never go back into that building again, and that I hoped my firm wouldnt go back. We had survived the bombing in 1993 and now this. Thats two more attacks than I could stand. Fifty-three minutes later it was a moot point. The building where I spent 10 years of my life began crumbling into dust. As I watched the dust cloud I remember thinking that what I was seeing wasnt really happening and that when the dust cleared my tower would still be there. The reality of what followed was one of the most traumatic experiences of my life. It was gone. And then the other was gone and it was only 10:30 a.m. What took seven years to build was gone in 1 hour and forty-five minutes. The hours and days afterward were followed by frantic phone calls from worried family, friends and co-workers. I was so relieved to learn that all of my co-workers survived and that other friends who worked in the towers also survived. Even so, I think I cried more tears in the past six months than I cried in my entire life and it took weeks before I could fall asleep before the sun came up. Like so many others, I became hyper-vigilant -- getting up and checking the planes flying overhead even when there werent any. Its taking a long time to get over what happened, but what precedent is there for getting over something like this? There isnt a word to describe that day. There isnt one word that encompasses horror, grief, fear, anxiety and anger. Someone would have to invent a new word to describe the events of September 11th. But, sometimes simplicity says it all. Within a few days after the attack, someone stenciled something on the sidewalks around my neighborhood. One of the spots where the comment was stenciled was the spot where I had been standing that morning when I heard about the plane crashing into Tower One. Its still there, but its slowly fading away with time. In red, white and blue lettering it says: WTC RIP Its a small epitaph for skyscrapers that once seemed so indestructible and for the thousands of lives that were lost in them. Its a simple epitaph - one that says it all - written on the sidewalks of New York because there arent enough words to inscribe in stone, or a grave large enough to hold everything that died that day. Im writing this on the first day of spring, 2002. Everything is starting to bloom again and I usually take great comfort in seeing things come back to life after winter. But we didnt have much of a winter this year and I wish we had. Somehow I feel that a drastic change of season - one with lots of snow and freezing temperatures would have provided a physical and emotional detachment from what happened. But its been relatively mild - deceptively so for winter - like that day that started out so beautifully in September 2001. Of course, it WAS seven-o'-clock in the morning and my brain was half dead. (My right-wing school is packed full of boneheads who have nothing better to do than play football all day, so the school starts early for "athletic purposes" or something.) My friend went on to explain how two airplanes had crashed into the Twin Towers. I thought he was joking, so I laughed it off. Later that day, though, in every class I was forced to attend, teachers had their TVs on, showing the actual crashing of the second plane. I couldn't believe it; it was like a movie of some sort. My family travels a lot over vacations, and we frequently use airplanes to do so. In addition, we should remember that (P)resident Bush actually USED the memory of the people to give himself a better reputation. I've noticed that insecure immigrants (some who are probably illegal) who drive SUVs that get under 15mpg were more likely to own miniature flags after the incident. While people say that the flags help "unite America," people are really using them for their own security. They are basically saying, "Look! I'm an American, too, so please don't attack me." I hate to mention race, because it's only a collection of exterior features, but white people have become more aggressive toward other races since 9/11. Other races use the flag for protection. I hate to see the flag of such a wonderful country being abused like this. As you, the reader, may have guessed, I do not own an American flag. I don't believe in covering myself with a costume of patriotism. Sure, I love my country very much, but we're not doing much to help anything by bashing France (which is trying to help keep our soldiers from dropping dead in Iraq) and being incredible racists against people in our own country. I live at Plummer, ID I just got up early to take a shower for work, I usely watch the news in the morning, when I turned on the T.V. I see these two towers one tower was on fire, I thought the news was showing some new movie that was coming out at the theatres, so I went and took my shower, so I got out of the shower I look at the news again and realized this was actually happening, I was just saying, Oh my God, so when I got to work then I heard that the other tower hand fell also, I just felt sick to my stomach and felt awfull for all the people that was in those towers and weren't able to get out, it was just devistating to me, I thought I was just dreaming and wake up and it never happened, but this lingered on for for quit awhile, my heart goes out to all those families that lost their loved ones, also those planes that crashed also. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I went to work as usaual at a very early hour driving a mixer truck for a local concrete company in Jackson, MS. As the sun came up I thought how nice a day it was going to be. A little after 8:15 CT my wife Pam called me on my cell phone as I was arriving back at the plant for another load of concrete and told me she heard an airplane had hit the World Trade Center in New York City and it may have been terrorists. After hearing this I went up to the plant managers office to listen to the radio. The manager then pulled up something on the internet and we watched in awe as the first tower fell. Having to do my job I had to recieve updates from people out on the job, my wife via cell phone, and the radio and internet between runs at the plant. I had no radio in my mixer truck, however I got information from the plant manager and the end-loader operator,(Randy) in between runs. About 3:00PM Local time I was in the manger office when Randy recieved a telephone from his mother. To this day I will never forget how Randy threw down the telephone, ran over to the wall and beat on it yelling, NO,NO,NO. Watching media coverage intermidately all day long, none of us, even Randy, had any idea that his brother was on the flight that crashed into the Pentagon. Jon Ferguson had lived in Boston and worked with the National Geografic Socitey educating children about Geography around the world. Jon as well as his co-worker and several children on a very special trip perished on that fateful day. Unfortanley, I never had the privlege to meet Jon but I'm sure he must have as caring and loving as his brother. The last year was hard on us as Americans and it affected us as a whole. If so, tell us how. Seeing the affects personably from a family I never realy knew it makes me appreciate what these people go through and how it can happen to any family at anytime. I grew up in a samall Mississippi town where you didn't lock your doors at night. Times have changed. We have to live free but be aware of our surroundings a little more. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? That our free society is vernible and some sectures will destroy it at any cost. That 3,000 lives were lost on 9-11-01 and the majority never knew they were under siege. That we have people that care about thier fellow people at any cost... even if it means our own life for thiers. NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? If it were not for our fore-fathers we would not have a flag to fly and be proud to live in such a wonderful country. We flew old glory before and we will fly it forever. I didn't know what was going on. I thought it was in some other country. Then Frau told us that one of the World Trade Center towers had a plane fly into it. Everyone's jaws dropped. I didn't belive it. Then later that day, I was eating lunch and these kids that I sat with (which I don't like) said they wanted to put a ?Swasticka? over the U.S. Flag hanging in the commens. I wanted to beat all of them to a bloody pulp.
