While walking to 3rd period I heard a kid yell "The twin towers have been attacked!". I had no idea what he was talking about and I got curious. But, in 3rd period no one knew what had happened. In 4th period, my history teacher told us that 2 planes high-jacked had ran into the Twin Towers and one plane had hit the Pentagon. The one thing that I remember most is my friend Rachel's story. She was supposed to go modeling that day after school in a building right next to the World Trade Center (she would have died). What if the terrorists decided to make thier attack a few hours later I kept thinking? But, then I started to think of all the people who were not as fortunate, and lost family members. As Franklin Roosevelt said about Pearl Harbor, I also believe that 9-11-01 is "A day that will live in infamy". NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. The one way 9-11-01 affected my life most is that it basically brought me to reality. Being brought up, I always heard that the U.S. is untouchable. Everyone considered Pearl Harbor the last suprise attack that would ever happen on America (we are jsut to powerful and no one can pull it off). But, look how easy it was for these men to board a plane, take it over, and crash into some of the most respected buildings in the U.S. I now will always fear terrorism. Since then I have flown once, and I honestly was scared. How couldn't you be? NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The one thing that I believe should be remembered most about this horrible day in American history is those firemen when worked so hard to save anyone they could. That took alot of dedication and courage. Also we obviously should remember that America is not untouchable. Any day something horrible could happen to us again. This date should remind us of what terrorism is, and make us always cautoius of it. We should always fear terrorism, fight to stop it, and most importantly never underestimate. As I was awoken by my crying mother on the morning of September 11th, she told me what had happened to the World Trade Center. Most of my family lives in New York and my mother didn't know what had happened to them because the phone lines weren't working....We were all so worried. My mother took me to school and the whole time at school i couldn't stop thinking about my family and especially my Great-grandmother who lives by herself in Manhattan. As watching the buildings fall and innocent people jumping out of the buildings, so much hate filled my mind, how could somebody do this. Killing innocent people, just because they are jealous of what we have. That day at school was the worst day ever. Everybody was in shock the whole day. I was so in shock that i didn't say anything the whole day. Thank God that my great-grandmother wasn't harmed physically. But she was harmed mentally...she could not stop crying for days, she witnessed the people jumping out of the building. To this day she still is always upset. Another relative was in his second grade class as he witnessed what had happened. So many of my family members were effected from this. This event has affected everybody so much. It has showed me how much we should appreciate our country and not take things for granted. It has also affected me because of my family members and what they had to go through in New York. Also, all the innocent people that were killed will always be remembered and how brave they were. We can never forget all of the fireman and all of the people that helped at ground zero. I turned on the radio like I always do. I was constantly changing the channel because there was talking on every channel, I am not all that fond of talking on the radio, but when I noticed it was on every channel I stopped to listen. I heard something about "terrorism" and "attack". I then went up stairs to notify my parents, where I found them watching TV. I sat down just as the second plane collided with second tower. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. My name is James McMichael, and I am a Deputy Sheriff with Arlington County. On September 11, 2001 I was standing in a courtroom when someone ran in with the news of the first tower being struck in NYC. We all thought it was an accident until the news of the second tower came in. I turned to my partner and said "we're next, we are going to get hit". The loud audible tone over our radio only meant trouble, and the news sent chills up my back, "The Pentagon is on fire", then seconds later, "Negative it was struck by a plane". From the window the grey and black smoke filled the air. I was immediately in a cruiser in route. Within minutes I was on scene and could not believe my eyes. My shock was broken by that loud audible tone again, "there is a plane headed towards the Pentagon, two minutes out". For the first time in my 4 year career I thought I was going to die, thoughts of my wife and family rushed through my head. Im sure everyone there at that moment thought the same thing, but no one showed it, not even for a second. We were determined. That day, I saw the greatest part of the human race. People from all walks came together, companies with food, supplies, etc...all gave a little that day. It was the worst day of my life because of the tragedy, but the greatest in the fact I can say that the country came together that day as a whole, and it was the proudest day of my life as a Law Enforcement Officer. FROM A DISTANCE in Memphis,Tennessee VIA television...It was unbelieveable,a "War of the Worlds" broadcast, then the impact of what IS happening...My neighbor banged on the door in almost a state of fear and shock..."What is Happening?"..."Are we under attack?"...She was crying so I gathered strength to calm her... Got some coffee, stayed glued to the TV. The telephone rang, it was my doctor's office with some lab results. After finishing that coversation, I glanced at the television set, it was still on. GMA was replaying footage of the first plane to hit one of the towers. I watched in disbelief, and horror. It seemed before I could catch my breath, the second plane hit. Then there was word of other missing planes. My telephone began ringing. It was my mother calling. Was I going to go and pick up my daughter from school? Yes, I told her. If something is going to happen to us too, then at least she and I would be together. I called my husband, who works for a large chemical plant; they were put on high alert for an attack. He told me he would try his best to contact me if something happened, what chemicals might be loose, which direction to go to avoid any vapor cloud. The telephone rang again, it was my daughter. She was crying. Her uncle was a airline pilot for Delta. Where was he, she asked. Had we heard from him? I told her, no, and that I was on my way to get her and her cousin from school. Before I could get out of the house, again, another call. This time it was my sister. She asked, "What in the hell is going on?" "We're under attack," I told her. "A plane is down in Pennsylvania. On September 12th, 2001, I drove my daughter to school. Along the way, Lee Greenwoods song "Proud to be an American," came on the radio. My daughter burst into tears and sobbed. So many, many things are horrible about September 11,2001, but I hate that evil stole away the innocense of so many. We were in between classes when the second plane hit. Every class had their tv's on. The rest of the day was filled with angry, shock, and sadness. Our athletic coach Mrs.Peggy McDonald told us that an airplane had hit the world trade center. I will never forget the look on everyone 's faces when we heard the terrible news. We've watch trafedies come and go, but high above, the flag still stands waving boldy, to and fro. My fiance and I witnessed 9-11 on the Tri-Boro Bridge, heading into NYC for what we thought would be a nice vacation. After seeing the second plane hit the WTC Tower, the freeways into Manhattan were closed, and we were dropped off in Queens. The towers colapsed. At this point we decided to head for Connecticut. After getting in touch with our family back home in Seattle, we proceded to walk with our bags for 8 miles to a Church. At 3pm, public transportation was reopened, and we made our way out to Port Jefferson on Long Island, took the ferry to Bridgeport, CT then a train to New Haven, where family met us. We finally made it to bed around 2:30am on the 12th of September. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Our lives have changed greatly. As with most people we experienced the surge in patriotism. Beyond this, I don't let things bother me anymore. If I don't get to work at promptly 8AM, it doesn't matter. I can't say that after 9/11 the American Flag was flown over my home, as it has always flown above my home. The flag symbolizes everything that is good about this country, and it is wonderful for me to see people beaming with pride when the flag is flown. I worked in a waterfront building on Exchange Place in Jersey City, directly across from where the World Trade Center. On the morning of September 11, 2001, a co-worker rushed to the window yelling that the WTC was on fire. I looked out the window directly at the hole where the plane had gone into the first tower and went into shock; I knew without doubt that my sister, who was employed by Cantor Fitzgerald, was trapped somewhere above the hell I was looking into. I immediately and desperately tried to contact her with no success. In between attempting to reach her on her office and cell phones, I called my parents in central NJ, who were unaware at that time of what was happening. I asked my mother if she'd heard from my sister and she asked me why; it was then that I told her to turn on the news. I began to cry and told my mother I'd call her back. After many more unsuccessful attempts to reach my sister, I called my parents back and told my mom to have someone go immediately to get my sister's son from school - my sister was a single parent with a 16 year old in high school - I didn't want him to hear it on the news or from someone else before we could get him home. While still on the phone with my mom, I watched from my window as the second plane crashed and exploded into WTC2, my parents saw it live on the news. I began to cry harder, knowing that many, many lives were lost. My building immediately began to evacuate at the direction of the authorities, and my co-workers attempted to get me to leave. I finally left the building, but went back in, as everything outside in the street was choas. I sat in my office in shock, watching the towers burn while answering telephone calls from crying spouses trying to reach their husbands - who were at the time my co-workers - informing them that everyone was all right and had been evacuated from the building. Upon calling my parents back again, I learned that my my eldest brother's son was in the second tower. He was a construction supervisor who did not work in the WTC, he happened to be there that morning to look at a job his company was doing. He was on the phone with my sister-in-law and brother when the second plane hit and the phone went dead. I eventually collected my belongings and left the building again, searching for my other nephew who worked with me and a co-worker/friend. After finding them a few streets away, we returned to my office building on the river to get my car so that we could go home to be with my family. Upon exiting the building, there was a great rush of people running toward the river; I yelled out my car window to someone and asked what was going on; he told me that the building had collapsed. After driving a few streets and getting on the NJ Turnpike, we could see that one of the buildings had collapsed and was gone. The three of us drove on in shock; eventually the other building came down and added to our hell. I drove the rest of the way home not even remembering going from point A to point B. The following days and weeks became more of a living hell, as we waited for word of my sister and nephew. My nephew's remains were recovered and buried in April 2002, no trace of my sister has ever been found. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Having worked in the financial industry for most of my career, I knew quite a number of the people who died in the WTC. Many of those I didn't know were relatives and friends of others I know. I also have a very close friend who survived from the 99th floor of WTC2; she evacuated when she heard and saw the damage from the 1st plane, and was one street away when the second one hit. She was lucky, over 200 people in her company perished. My life has changed drastically; my family still lives with the devastation of losing our two loved ones in such a horrific way. I now work in a building one street away from where I was in 9/01, my office window still overlooks the site of the WTC disaster. I carry the images of the fires and explosions with me every day, they can never be erased from my memory. The thought of what my sister, nephew and all the others must have gone through, based on what I'd seen, will continue to haunt me throughout my life. I remember how everyone came together, how no one was a stranger; I grew up in New York and we're a notorious breed - for the most part everyone minds their own business - but on this day and in the weeks and months that followed, people went out of their way to be helpful and caring. The outpouring of sympathy from the nation for the victims, not only in NY - but in DC and on the planes - was tremendous. I wish the citizens of our country would continue to act toward each other as they acted then. While I haven't come away from September 11 untouched, I have learned a tremendous lesson - that is to recognize what's important to you in life, and don't ever let a day go by without telling the people who are important to you just how much they mean to you - you may never get a second chance. I had just arrived at my job in an area hospital when I had heard about the first plane, just minutes after it happened. After the second plane crashed, we were all certain that this was no accident and the facility was put on disaster alert standby due to the planes that were still in the air. There was a great concern about the local nuclear power plant being targeted. Many people throughout the hospital were very concerned about loved ones who live in NYC, DC, and even one who had a relative who was called to duty for the US Air Force. Disbelief, sorrow, and helplessness are the best words to describe the mood of everyone surrounding us. Personally, my heart sank as the realization of the heartlessness of the individuals who carried out these actions sank into my consciousness. Eyes were glued to the television as the tragedy unfolded before our eyes; watching the towers collapse live on television was almost too much to comprehend. It was obvious to all that we were witnessing the deaths of thousands of innocent people right before our eyes. The whole world was watching as the world was ending for so many. Whether we are at ground zero or thousands of miles away, the realization that "it can happen here" is now an issue wherever we may live. On a positive note, the patriotism is unbelieveable, and I find myself proudly (and at times, tearfully)acknowledging each act of support for our country. We have come together proudly and strongly, now more cautious, but with our beliefs and our courage still intact. We are now realizing just how precious our freedom really is. Spiritually, the realization of mortality in the blink of an eye makes my appreciation of life my biggest priority. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? Everyday people are all heroes...we watched millions of people come together and embrace their fellow man in a time of need. When i walked into the room i saw one girl who was cring and everyone else just looked very concered so i asked my friend who told me that 2 planes had flew into the trade towers, one into tower one and one into tower two. My jaw immedietly dropped. I did not know anyone who worked in the city but i was very concerd for the people that did..then when i heard that the pentagon was also hit i knew that this was deffinitly not a mistake and i wondered how someone could possibly do this. When i got home from school i was there with my mother, father, brother and all of his friends since we all left school and work early to be home..we put on the news right away and saw the trade towers fall to the ground one right after another it was the most horrible thing that i had ever seen so i started to cry...i looked at everyone in the room as there were just eyes filled with tears...then i looked at my dad and saw how he was cring and seeing my dad cry changed my life forever, i never new such a strong person like my dad could have been so effected but he was and he went to the city to help and he told me that it was the most horrible thing that he ever bare witnessed to in his life! My friend and I live and work in New York City, the Twin Towers are visible from the hospital we work in, I watched in total disbelief and horror as the flames erupted and the Towers collapsed. My friend watched in horror from the roof of our home. Both of us are nurses and we felt totally helpless that day because all we could do was wait. The hospital was mobilized to receive the injured, but none came, as the hours passed we learned that a paramedic that was our co-worker was missing and we waited, but he never returned. It seems unreal that a year has passed, we have made 11 trips to Ground Zero, and it still seems like yesterday. New York is healing and in great thanks to the rest of the country. It had been a very boring morning. i was in my government class listening to the oldest teacher in the school, Mrs. MCcurdy, go on and on in her rambling about herself when she was young and how she use to hitch-hike alll the time with her husband. "I'm in government and this teacher is rambling about herself! Just great!" I said to myself as I placed my head down on the desk in bordem. Then all the sudden, I think coop came busting through the door. "Yo, one of the twin towers have been hit by a plane!" he exclaimed. Coop had been notorious for lieing so none of us believed him. "Coop, please get out of here, you are distrupting an important discussion.", Mrs. MCcurcdy said with a wave of her hand. "Nah I'm serious! The ones in New York! Check it out" he said with sincerity. The teacher knowing Coop left the room to see for herself. They to the library, where, unlike our room , had a working t.v set. She came back and said, "Class... come quickly..to the library..." We sat there not knowing whether this was actually happening... When the second plane hit, there was a series a gasp and curses. Coop said to me, "Damn Jville, are you ready for war?" It's funny how so many will react in those ways when we realize that we can be the target of hate and destruction. Hiroshima was an even worst disaster,yet we were predominately unmoved. Maybe god has punished us for our pompous,close-minded attitudes. Well, then again, I don't believe that our creator would punish us. Our creator gives us the free will to do whatever. I woke up and did my usual routine in getting ready to go to work at Salomon Smith Barney. I took the N train to Cortlandt Street one of several train stations that was located underneath the World Trade Center. As soon as I got into the office one of my colleagues informs me that the World Trade Center has been hit by a plane. We both go to one of the corner offices to get a view of this unbelievable tragedy. My co-workers and I are stunned and puzzled. We cannot believe our eyes at what we are seeing. I am thinking how can this be pilot error on such a beautiful clear day? At that moment, we see the second plane hit the other tower. We are all shocked, crying and scared. We are in disbelief that this has just happened. We all start to run to the nearest staircase that we can find and head down 34 flights of stairs. There are people who are walking down the staircase in silence. There are those who you can see the shock and disbelief on their face as this tragic event is unfolding. We finally reach the lobby and head out of the building. Everyone is waiting in front of the headquarters which is located at Greenwich Street. We stand anxiously awaiting for someone to give us instructions. All you can hear are the sirens from the police cars, ambulances and federal agents driving by our headquarters to this horrific scene. I saw several people who were caught in the Towers in what I would imagine to be a fiery hell make the ultimate choice of perishing by jumping out of the towers. Finally someone makes an announcement that everyone should walk towards Midtown. The authorities are not allowing anyone to walk or go near the World Trade Center area. As my co-workers and I are walking towards Midtown the first tower collapses in front of our eyes like a house of cards. We see the billowy clouds of gray smoke and start to run and cry. The clouds did not reach us since there was plenty of distance from our location to the World Trade Center. I feel numb and feel like I am in a scene of a bad disaster movie. It's all so surreal. I'm going through so many emotions. I am scared, sad, shocked, angry and frustrated. I still keep walking and we stop by a car that is parked on the street with the radio turned on at high volume. Everyone is surrounding the car at attention trying to listen to the news. The radio announcer starts to talk about the Pentagon being hit by a plane. At that moment the second tower collapses. Everyone is suffering their own emotional roller coasters. I saw men crying when those towers collapsed. I heard and saw people showing their anger when those towers collapsed. I saw people crying and worried and in fear that their loved ones, friends, family might be a victim of this horrific and senseless tragedy. We walked to Midtown and waited. Every time I heard a plane I cringed thinking "Oh God please not again" This was my experience. I will never forget this moment for the rest of my life. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life has changed in that as an American I was naive and thought that these horrific tragic events like 9/11 occur in other countries but not in the United States. This horrible event opened my eyes and has awaken me to the realization that Americans can no longer afford the luxury of being naive to the fact that we have become the latest targets to terrorism. After the 9/11 tragedy feelings of being vulnerable and not having any control awakened in me. I have learned to really appreciate life and value every moment of it. I think of the victims of the 9/11 tragedy: the mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, sons, daughters, husbands and wives who woke up on that beautiful sunny day doing their routine to go to work at those two majestic buildings. It is a shame that it takes a tragic event like 9/11 to unite all of us. It takes a tragic event to open up our eyes and appreciate and value life and each other. We are all in this together and should learn to respect and embrace our cultural differences. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The focal point of remembrance from this tragedy should be the victims. Their deaths should not be in vain. Remember their lives, share the victim's life experiences by making the memorial more personal so that everyone who sees it will appreciate, value and understand the tragic circumstances of their passing. This memorial should commemorate the victims and be an instrutment to teach our generation and future generations lessons of preventing cowardly acts like the one of 9/11 from occurring again. NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? I believe that patriotism can be expressed in many different ways. I did not fly an American flag after this tragic event occurred because I am not a believer in jumping on the bandwagon just because everyone else says it has to be so. I viewed it as a source of comfort for those Americans to fly the American Flag as their way of dealing with this senseless tragedy. As a way of expressing to the terrorist that their coward and senseless act did not defeat us. I think this is a good message to send to those cowards who participated in this senseless tragedy. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. On September 11, 2001 a morning none will forget. I woke up that morning the day after I turned 20 for school. It was a sunny beautiful morning in which I felt like skipping school. I decided to go and in psychology class a kid that was late every morning because he watched the news told us that one plane hit. Well after class listening to the radio, I was in shock to hear what I was hearing. It was like a nightmare that I couldn't wake up. That nightmare was reality and it sank in fast. All I could think about was my dad, being from Texas we were in the middle of America. Dad was working at 3 mile island, the nuclear plant that was possibly a target. The thing I remember the most of that day and the following days that hit me very deep was when the National Anthem was played at Buckinghelm Palace during the changing of the gaurds. It was an emotional day for all Americans everywhere.
