I lived in Atlanta at the time, and I remember what a beautiful morning it was; cool and clear blue skies. It seemed to be the first break from the heat. On my drive in to work I was running late and had neglected to turn on my usual morning radio show. Traveling up the usually unbearably congested I-85 I remember wondering if I was running much farther behind than I thought. No one seemed to be in a rush and there was a remarkable eerie stillness to everything. Turning on the radio immediately confirmed that something was wrong. I could hear the panic and confusion in the voices even before I heard that the Pentagon had been hit. As I drove up to my office building I heard about the World Trade Center, then the second plane. A shock of disbelief and a wave of panic numbed me. I walked on the central reservation floor of our Company, wanting to see the normal bustle of a mid-morning work day. Dead silence. Everyone sat quietly, listening to news. I joined them and together we tried calling friends in New York: family in the Trade Center, friends working across the street, old roommates in school there. And then we began using our headsets, our planes grounded, passengers stranded, cancellations, inquiries. I think that everything in our lives, for every one of us, is now stained with the permanent sting that everything is temporary and everything is unpredictable. I was working here at Medical Automation Systems in Charlottesville, Virginia, when a co-worker named Wayne came up to me and said that an airliner had hit one of the towers of the World Trade Center. Citing at first that this was a joke, I glanced out the window to see one of our employees frantically grabbing a small television from her truck. I then realized that something really did happen. Bringing it upstairs, she connected the tv and watched the horrors unfold. After seeing the second plane hit we knew then that this was no accident. After watching this for about 15 minutes or so, I went back downstairs, shocked in disbelief. My wife then called me on her cell phone screaming and crying, "Are we at war? The Pentagon just got hit with a bomb or something." I went to the Internet but it wasn't working. I ran out to my car and listened to the radio to hear more of the shocking news. Greg, our company owner, let us go home that day. We were all completely numbed and some were unable to work that day. When I got home I spent the rest of the night and most of the early morning watching the news. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life changed dramatically because I lost 8 friends and co-workers at the Pentagon that day. I didn't find out until my former Senior Chief called me with names. The plane had apparently hit the Navy comm center. I had retired from the Navy 18 months before this happened and worked at the Navy Yard comm center. The Pentagon Comm Center was a sister unit of ours and it came under the same command, NCTS Washington DC. Since then, I have been diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. I was unable to sleep most nights for weeks after the attacks. I have also been diagnosed with a minor heart problem (a murmur) attributed to the emotional shock I went through. Because of the need for something to do to help others, I implemented and organized 8 local unsigned bands, including my own rock band, LoosEndz, to come together in concert at Alston's Pub in Harrisonburg, Virginia, to raise money for the Twin Towers Fund that was set up through Mayor Guliani. We called the concert "WTC-AID." Although we didn't raise a huge sum of money, we came together and had a nice concert and sent the money off in the form of a check that same night to the Twin Towers Fund. The reward to me was witnessing human solidarity, and how a group of people came together as one to pull off this fantastic event. I realize life is now very short and we must live our lives to the fullest. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The fact that innocent people went to work that day to feed and clothe their families, only to meet their tragic ends all because of ignorance and violence from a religious group that is based entirely on hate. Yes, and with that, I also posted a large sign that read "WAKE UP AMERICA! LET'S GIVE THEM THEIR JIHAD!" My feelings on the American Flag: It has become more than an icon to me. Every time I see it, and I mean each and every time, a lump wells up in my throat and I think about 9/11. I served twenty years in the US Navy proudly; my patriotism still remains strong as ever. I was in my first period when i see one of the teachers come in the classroom crying and crying. My teacher asked her what happened and she said that a plane crashed in the twin towers. So my teacher turned the tv on and put it on CNN to see what was happening. When i saw it i thought the plane lost control, but i never thought it was a terrorist. It was second period and I was in Algebra when an anouncment came on over the intercome that twin towers were hit by two planes. When I heard this I thought of the time when I was on vacation there and was standing on top of one of the towers. Then when about 8th period came I talked to a girl that said she watched the towers fall on t.v. and I remember telling her that she was crazy those two buildings could never be brought down. When school ended I went home and turned on the t.v. and I started watching how the planes hit and then everybody started running and I just couldn't believe that what I was watching was real. They should how people were jumping out of the building and all the injured people. The next images were of the buildings collapsing and the cloud of dust covered everything. Later on that night there were pictures of the wrecked fire trucks and police cars and then the pictures of the hospital and all the injured people. Then I realized that all of this was real. On the morning of September 11th, I left home early to vote before getting the No. 7 train into Manhattan to work. It was a gorgeous fall day - beautiful blue sky, no clouds - the kind of day you thank God you're in NYC. I voted and caught the train in; as the train left the Courthouse street station my cell phone rang. A friend who was home from work was calling... I laughingly answered saying "talk quick, we're about to go into the tunnel." She said "Did you see the news?" I answered "No, that I had been voting before getting on the train." She said,"A plane hit one of the towers of the World Trade Center" then my cell phone went dead. I looked out the window of the train car to see smoke pour out of the building. I said "The World Trade Center is on fire" out loud in the train. Everyone in the car turned and looked at the building and then we all turned back to our reading or listening to music as the train went into the tunnel to take us under the East River. I'm sure that everyone else on the car had similar thoughts - simply a small plane had hit the tower and hopefully no one had died. I had no idea as to the true extent of what was happening... I arrived at Times Square, probably about the same time as the second plane hit the South Tower. When I arrived in my office, I found everyone watching the televisions and was told what was really happening. Every few minutes, we would walk out to the balcony for our office at 1440 Broadway - we had a clear view of towers as they smolder and later as they fell. The T-1 lines were still up, so I emailed everyone to let them know that I was all right and to please call those without email. Working for an online media company, I spent the day posting information for our online community members and pointing to places where information could be found on the 'net. The traffic online was so overloaded that most new websites could not handle the bandwidth needed - ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, FoxNews, BBC, SkyNews, CBC, Australia were all inaccessible. The only english news site availble for a few hours was ERT (Ireland News)until CNN stripped it's site of everything except text. The other news services soon followed suit since this would allow more people to access their site at a given point of time. Since the trains weren't running, those who didn't live in Manhattan decided to hunker down for awhile. We still had electricity, water and food - there were much taller buildings around us. However, around 4 pm the No. 7 train was running again. A friend's husband agreed to meet me outside of my building (he worked a block away) to take the train out to Queens. When I stepped outside of my office building, the thing I noticed was the total silence. All traffic had been blocked below 42nd street - there was no honking or squeeling of brakes. You could only hear the faint sound of sirens as fire truckes sped downtown. There were some people just wandering around with large suitcases - tourists looking for a hotel? But no one was talking. They just walked around in somewhat of a daze, glancing up every few minutes. I guess we were all checking for planes. We took the train to 40th street and Queens Blvd. and headed to the Courtyard pub. It's an Irish neighborhood, and everyone was gathered at the local to make sure everyone was ok, share news they'd heard and hear more. Besides, no one wanted to sit in their apartment watching Penny Crone talk to families desperately searching for loved ones - you knew by then that they were probably gone. I had been waiting for it - it was the 6th round of lay-offs that year. With the job market being so bad and family health issues in Washington State I decided that it would be a good time to leave NYC and head home. On Oct. 18 I drove a rented truck with all my belongings across country to Spokane, WA. It was on that trip that I discovered that silence unnerves me - for 18 months, I felt panic whenever it was very quiet and a siren pierced the silence... this never happened in NYC, probably because of the constant level of noise. I still feel unconfortable without having some noise in the background. After seeing all posters of missing people, I thought about how horrible it would be for my family to have to sit down and try to remember where a large mole was - I got a tattoo of a Swedish flag on my ankle. I also decided that I wanted to do something that had an impact on the future - no one is guaranteed time to "do it later." I think that people should remember that life is precious and nothing is guaranteed - you have to make meaning now. I was asleep when the first airplane crashed into the World Trade Center. my mom came in my room and woke me up and as I walked into the living room, I saw the second airplane smack into the World Trade Center. I think I read somewhere that the death toll was smaller the recovered/ got out ok toll. And that dogs helped recover people in the rubble. I received a phone call from my sister telling me that the World Trade Center and the Pentagon was being attacked. I turned on the TV around 8 am CST. I couldn't believe what I was seeing on TV. It was just unreal. Two of my children and I stayed glued to the TV until time for me to go to work at my father's Chevron station and country store. I was so shocked at what was going on and I didn't know what to expect next. Around three o'clock that afternoon the shock had to be set aside for a little while. A rumor circulated that gas prices were going up and there was going to be a shortage. I spent the next three hours continuously pumping gas trying to help the cars get through as quickly as possible. Daddy kept the store open later than usual that night. I went to bed that night physically, emotionally, and mentally exhausted. I could only guess at what tomorrow would bring. It was a very unsettling feeling. Although I was not directly involved in what was happening in New York or Washington, my heart and prayers went out to those directly involved. I am thankful for my family, for my freedom, and for those who have fought to preserve that freedom. I am thankful for our leaders, our firefighters, and our policemen. I am thankful for those who sacrificed to help others during this national crisis. America has so much to be thankful for. God Bless America. I think that September 11th should be a reminder to us that America is vunerable and we should take every precaution to protect America and its citizens. My youngest son attached a flag pole to our front porch and we have proudly flown an American flag since September 11th. I have always been proud to be an American and now I am more proud than ever to be an American. I called my husband to make sure he got up for work and he told me a plan crashed into the WTC, looked like an accident, and said it was on the news. I plugged my TV into the cable and watched. I ran down the hall to another S.S. teacher and asked if she heard and to turn on the TV. I stopped at the English teachers room and mentioned something. As the kids piled into class, I had the TV on, and the lights off, I told them I really didn't know what was going on, then the second plane went in, right before our eyes on live TV. It was dead quiet. The bell rang and the next class came in, I quickly told them to sit quietly and watch, as I tried to gather my emotions, the first Tower fell, my eyes welled up, and I cried. I proceeded to map out for my students where all of this was taking place, being it was geography class afterall. Chaos in D.C., questions from my students, I responded as best as I could at that point. All I could say is "history in the making" and we were in the middle of the nation (Fargo, ND), to calm their fears. All I could think of was how fortunate my husband's aunt and uncle, who live in NYC, were visiting Fargo the night before. Then I thought of an ex-boyfriend whom I dated off an on, who lived in NYC, and knew he worked in the financial sector...it took days to get a hold of him, phone lines were jammed. I never thought that anyone would fly a plane into the Twin Towers. Then in 2nd period World Geography, we watched the news. When the news broadcasters said that there were thoughts of more terrorists attacks at Los Angeles International Airport, I cried. I was so afraid of terrorist attacks at the airport. My dad had designed a new cargo building for Asiana Airlines, which was where he worked. The new building was located on Airport property. I didn't know what to think. I was so scared. LAX was shut down for a couple hours. That made me even more worried. The attacks that were predicted for L.A. never happened, which was relieving, but the events that happened in New York will be remembered forever. Some people wrote touching essays that made people cry. For a lot of people it numbed the anger and confusion. Overall, my pride, not life has changed. I am more prideful in my country. The thing that should be remembered about September 11th is how the United States of America became a stronger country. I had no clue what was going on. I didn't even know what the twin towers were. It was shocking that we had to go to school when I barely even knew what was going on. When I first find out about what had hapen at 8:46 on September 11, I was in school listening to Mrs.Carlton, my 10th grade Spanish teacher lecture the class when all of the sudden another teacher knocks on our door pointing Mrs. Carlton out of the class, it took a couple of minutes for Mrs. Carlton to come back into the class and we where wactching her cry trough the window that was on the door we whondered what was going on but when se came in she told us the tragedy that had happened a couple minutes ago. It started as a usually day at school. I was in 8th grade and in first period at the time it happened My teacher told us that she was going to put the news on for us. We didn't know why she was doing it. She told us that we should all promise not to tell anyone or they might get scared. We all agreed. She turned on the TV and there it was, the first tower englulfed in flames. As I watched people running for theor lives, I thought, "Who would do such a thing?" The smoke from the building was the blackest I have ever seen. Papers and documents were floating down everywhere. Pieces of bot the plane and the building were falling on people down below. We watched this until the period was over. As the bell rang, the class left with a terrifying look on their faces.As I left the room I couldn't help but tell everyone. As he day ended we all got on our bus. All everyone was talking about was the towers and who did it. As I got off the bus, I ran all the way home. When i walked in my family's eyes were stuck on the TV. I witnessed nothing other than the first building falling as I walked in. As I wayched i realized how everyone came together as ONE. People of every background were helping. Although people of every background were dieing. As I watched that first tower fall, A shiver went down my back. I was so scared that something worse would happen. Scared that this might be the end, thinking to myself, "If I should go out ever again?" Once the sencond tower fell, I figured that whoever did this just started a new war. A new kind of society. I was right. People were afraid to come out of their homes. The world changed too. Never in my life have I seen the Air Force have to patroll the skies. In the end, over 30,000 people died. Many family lost friends or even family of their own. Now everyone has come on September 11, 2002, to grieve on which two towers fell just one year ago. This day will never be forgotten. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was taking a much needed vacation on North Carolina's Outer Banks. I was awake unusually early, and turned on the morning news, just as pictures of the first plane were being broadcast. Thinking it an accident, I waited to hear more. To my horror, I saw the 2nd plane slam into the 2nd tower, and new it was the most outrageous act of terrorism imaginable. I woke my best friend, and tried to tell her what I had just seen, but she didn't believe me. I finally turned her TV on, and we just sat stunned. As each event unfolded, I felt more and more helpless. Being from PA, my first instinct was to call my family. My nephew is at Oceana NAS in Virginia, so I called him--he kept telling me things would be okay.. I told him that for the first time in my life, I couldn't honestly believe that. I started crying, and just couldn't stop. My friend of 30 years and I spent the rest of the day, in fact the week, in shock. It's still difficult to believe this all really happened. I had been working at the Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, and had one week left to work before relocating to NOrth Carolina. I was unable to return to that job--every time I thought of one of teh choppers coming in with a new patient, I became physically ill. I felt guilty for not being able to do anything to help, and fear at the vision of the choppers hovering overhead. I come from a family with a strong military backround, and wish I had joined the Navy when I had the opportunity. I feel an even stronger sense of pride in my country than I did in the past. I have a stronger faith in God than I believed possible. And I still experience overwhelming periods of sorrow for the entire nation. But given the chance, I would stand and fight to the death for the land of my birth. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The strenght and courage of the passengers of Flight 93. The unfailing efforts of the military, and of the firefighters and police, not only in NY, DC, and PA, but the entire nation. THAT MORNING ONE OF OUR JAILERS CAME INTO DISPATCH TO ADVISE US TO TURN THE TV ON. SHE ADVISED A PLANE CRASHED INTO THE WORLD TRADE CENTER. I FIGURED IT WAS A SMALL PLANE. WHEN I TURNED THE TV ON TO THE "TODAY" SHOW I COULD NOT BELIEVE THE LARGE HOLE. SOON EVERYONE GATHTERED AROUND THE TV. SOON WE SAW ANOTHER EXPLOSION HAPPEN AT THE OTHER TOWER. WE COULD NOT BELIEVE WE ACTUALLY SAW IT HAPPEN ON TV. WE WERE ALL AMAZED AT WHAT WAS HAPPENING. WORKING IN DISPATCH THAT DAY WE RECEIVED A FEW CALL FROM CITIZENS. SOME THOUGHT IT WAS AN ATTACK. SOME WERE NERVOUS THAT THIS SAME THING THAT WAS TAKING PLACE ON TV MAY HAPPEN CLOSE TO HOME. I REMEMBER A SICK FEELING INSIDE MYSELF. I WAS VERY COLD THAT DAY THINKING ABOUT WHAT TOOK PLACE. SOON WORD GOT OUT THAT GAS PRICES WERE GOING TO SKY ROCKET BECAUSE OF THE ATTACK. WHEN I LEFT WORK I DID FILL MY CAR WITH GAS. IT WAS THE ONLY TIME I EVER PAID CLOSE TO $2 A GALLON FOR GAS.
