Then some kids started saying something about there's a plane flying into the World Trade Center. I thought it was a joke or something until I finally got to the library. There, they had a TV on showing the news. In each of the classes it was much the same until after lunch, I think. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. No, I don't really think so. Sure at first, it's a shock. I mean, you never think anything could happen like this to the U.S. But now I htink it was a while ago, and even then, it was across the country. And what can you really do after something like that? Is some change in your lifestyle or attitude going to change anything? I don't think so. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? September 11 will always be remembered as the day that planes flew into the twin towers. And it should be remembered as such. But it should also be rememebred as the day that we learned that the United States is not invulnerable. It was the day that someone actually challenged the U.S. And the years following September 11 will be how the world will find out if we are actually what we say we are. Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? We would have, if we had a flag. A friend of ours who flew a mission involving the response after 9/11 gave us a little flag that each member that flew that mission had in their plane. We have that framed and on the wall. My feelings about the flag haven't really changed since 9/11. All I know is that I've seen it more since then. I've always had respect for our flag, and what it represented. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was on my way to work that early tuesday morning, and I had just turned on the radio in my car. When the announcer, on a station famous for practical jokes and lies, said that the towers had been hit, I couldn't believe it. I immediately change the radio station and heard nothing but reports of NY. My heart dropped. I could not believe that something like this tragic event could ever occur on US soil. I immediately turned on the tv at work and watched the two smoke filled towers stand awaiting an imminate fall. I could not help but cry when I saw the people frantically running from the buildings, firefighters going in, and desperate people jumping extreme heights to avoid a fiery deaths. Eventhough I was in Chicago and the events were in NY, I could not help but feel a tremendous sense of loss. Then, the Pentagon was hit--our own countries defense system! And then, the flight that crashed when heroic passengers took on their own fate. ALL tragic, tragic, tragic losses!!!! I could not help but think that whom ever committed such terrorizing attacks would certainly end up paying for them! NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I was not directly related to anyone effected by the attacks; however, my life, like all other Americans, will be forever changed. I now have heightened sense of patriotism. I only regret that it took such an event to make me appreciate my own country. For that, I am sorry!!! I now also live with a slightly heightened sense of fear. Fear that my son, and all other future generations of Americans, will have to live with the constant thoughts of when another attack can possibly occur and whether or not America will be at a constant war with other Terrorist groups. Yes, we put up any flags we could find, but none were true staff flags. The problem was that all stores were running out and there was soon a shortage. But despite the stores being out, I, as well as anyone else who did not already own a flag should, felt ashamed. I did not own a flag!!! It is sad that there was such a high number of people who did not own a flag, or they had a flag that was old, faded, or had holes. I have learned from my mistake. I now have the highest appreciation for our countries flag, and I will always be a proud American and fly OLD GLORY out side of my home. I thought we were at war with Cuba or Saddam. I didn't know what was going to happen next. I remember being in commercial art, we were listening to music on the radio. In the middle of Welcome to the Jungle someone came on the air, and said that a plane has crashed into the World Trade Center. My teacher immediately wheeled a t.v. into the room,and we were able to see the second plane hit the other tower live. What bothered me the most about the whole thing is my good friend Kristen's uncle was in town. The night before he told Kristen's dad that they were going to save the bottle of Hennesy that he had brought for Christmas. The next morning he went to take a flight back home to Los Angelos. When Kristen's dad found out he had his kids dismissed from school. A few nights ago, (9/10/02) Kristen and her family planted a tree in memory of their lost uncle. I woke to the sound of my phone ringing....before I could answer it, the answering machine did, and I heard my sister saying something about bombs hitting the Trade Towers and the Pentagon. I picked up the phone and began talking to her, and turned on the news just in time to watch the 2nd tower fall. I was devastated. I couldn't do anything that day except stay home and watch tv. We have friends in Queens, and I tried to call them right away, and got the "all circuits busy, try later" message. I sent an email, which thankfully they responded to by the next morning--they were all safe. It took me several weeks before I felt "normal" again. Sometime during the week of Sept. 11th, I called the local chapter of the American Red Cross and asked how I could help. They told me to register to take upcoming disaster classes. I took the first available classes (held in Oct.), and a week after I was finished with my training, I was on a plane to New York City. I spent 3 weeks working in a Service Center in China Town, helping clients affected by the disaster. It was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. Being able to provide some financial relief, but most importanly, hope to these people was awesome. And the reason I could do that was because of the generosity of the American people who opened their hearts and wallets to people of New York City. I have stayed active in the Red Cross since Sept. 11th, and now volunteer on local house fires, floods, etc. I am hopefully a better, more involved citizen because of the tragedy of Sept. 11th. There were many heroes on that day, and many who became heroes afterward, by contributing their time and energy, and resources to help our country recover. The principle came on the announcements to tell everyone about the shocking events. I will never forget the tone of his voice as he gave us the news that somthing terrible had happened just a few miles away at the Pentagon and in New York City. Share your experience. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As long as you are of sound mind you will always remember this day as long as you live! At the time it happened it was a normal sunny day and I was working along with everyone else that day. Normal thoughts and aspirations were going through my mind, How am I going to get this done or that done? What am I going to accomplish next? Then I heard the news "World Trade Center, Pentagon, Pennsylvania." What was going to be next? We all gathered to watch the tragic events unfold, then the realization: I have family working in New York City, Panic Hit! My bother in-law is a subway engineer and my sister works in the city and I did not know how close they were to it until several hours later, when the phone lines were clear and my brother in-law was finally able to contact my sister. He was bringing people out of the city and bringing rescue people into the city all night. I went to ground zero and saw the destruction, messages of hope and despair with my own eyes. I smelled the indescribable putrid concrete dust odor in the air. I went to the NYS museum and saw the fire engine that was destroyed and read the entire time line of the events of that day moment by moment. I read about the men from that fire company that lost their lives that day. About their family they left behind, of their hopes and dreams for their own future. And to know that there are thousands hurt, lost, dead, and all their family, their friends, and their hopes and dreams that were lost forever. Now in afterthought: when everything has calmed down and you have gone through every emotion possible. And still you have not reached the end of the roller coaster. The reason for everyone dying for an absurd reason by people who should have been committed to a psychiatric ward somewhere. They did not succeed in getting any point across. They killed themselves along with thousands of innocent people in the name of What? Japan said they "Awoke a Sleeping Giant" after they bombed Pearl Harbor. What did Osama do? He went after innocent, unarmed, people who were just doing their jobs as they did every day. They killed mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, and friends. They succeeded in getting Americans closer together and working toward a common goal. Not the goal Osama intended. They rallied governments to stand together against this type of aggression. The National Anthem means more to the majority of people today then ever. We know as Americans we can survive. Thank you to the fire, police, port authority departments, and the normal everyday people who helped in the unfortunate event. We will never forget and my thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends that were left behind and those who still need to endure and go on. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. My name is Christine Rank, I live in the southern suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. On September 11th 2001 I was home sick from work. I awoke relatively early and began to read a book in front of the muted television. I happened to glance up and I did a double take when I saw what was on the screen. I immediatly turned the volume up to hear what I could'nt belive I was witnessing. I quickly ran to the bedroom to awaken my husband and tell him to come watch with me. Shortly thereafter we watched Flight # 175 strike the 2nd tower. I didnt know how to feel. I dont think anyone did at the time. Disbelief, horror, disgust, sadness, anger, every feeling swept over me at once. We stayed glued to the television and radio, for the next several weeks. To this day, I get sick when I see pictures, hear songs, or even see pictures of the towers or the Pentagon...I fly regularly, it is a requirement of my profession...but there is still fear in my heart, and that fear turns to anger and disdain when i remember that fateful day. I cant imagine the absolute fright those thousands of people felt, to be there, in the midst of their own deaths. My heart and prayers go out to everyone who lost their lives, and everyone who lost someone to that terror. Remember.....always Remember. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I began my day with an 8am class. It was Critical Reasoning at the Art Institute of Dallas. We were scheduled for a break in the class (which was four hours long), but instead of a break, we finished up early and left at 10 or 10:30. When we left class, the entire break area/lobby was crowded with students who had all been there for at least an hour chattering about it all. There were two televisions in opposing corners of the room, and half of us were glued to them, watching the ongoing coverage. I remember coming downstairs and not knowing what was going on. Someone explained it to me, as I rarely pay attention to those televisions. As I watched, and listened to the news, I began to get upset. They were talking about mobilizing units. My dad is high on the list of mobilization when it comes to security. He's in the Air Force, a Senior Master Sergeant in Explosive Disposal. He and my family were stationed at Holloman AFB, in New Mexico. The school closed for the day after reports of the possility of one of the missing planes may be heading to the downtown Dallas area. Most of the students left immediately, some stayed and watched, waiting for rides. I made arrangements to ride with a friend, who also volunteered to give another classmate a ride home. So, as I awaited his return (he had a Honda motorcycle), I attempted to contact my family. Unfortunately, and unknown to me at the time, they were on-base doing some shopping that morning. The base was locked down, and no-one was allowed on or off without clearance. I was unable to reach them for most of that day. When I finally made it home that morning, it was probably 11 o'clock. We turned on the television, and my friend sat there watching the coverage all day. I was unable to watch, I just couldn't. I'm a very peaceful person, and it just shocked me too much. I ended up in bed and slept almost the entire day away. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Since then, I have lost some hope for the human race. I know that, deep down, everyone is capable of great things. I know that we can all find a non-violent solution to every problem. But, I also know that it is easier for humans to resort to primitive, violent, activities to get their message across. I just wish they wouldn't. I even created a website dedicated to discussions about ways to obtain a world peace, although its traffic has not been as high as I had hoped. I think I only had fifteen people even visit it in the past year. I have always thought of myself as an optimist, but the way it was handled, not only by these 'terrorists', but also by our own government, media and even the people, just doesn't seem right. The media played it every way they could. You couldn't walk ten steps without seeing a sign commemorating it, or using it in an advertisement. You couldn't watch television without some coverage at least every 15 minutes. They even took the twin towers out of some movies due to release that year. The government used it to push forth a 'war on terrorism'. Just a reason to attack an already dessemated country. My building is the World Financial Center and I usually walk through the World Trade Center to get to my building. As I got off the train at 9:00 AM people were telling everyone to get back on the train and go home as a plane hit the World Trade Center. A coworker and I went to the next station where we went above ground. That is when I saw the black smoke coming from the World Trade Center. We tried to get back home. Only two stops later the trains were stopped and everyone was told to get out. I walked to the Brooklyn Bridge and started to walk over the bridge to get to Brooklyn. A third of the way up I say the World Trade Center building starting to fall. After the building fell there was a huge cloud of dust that was going out in all directions. I covered my face with my shirt so I would not breath in the dust. People coming from behind me were covered with soot from the dust. They had the dust in their hair, on their clothes and all over their faces. We were told that they were not letting people off the bridge but we kept walking. I am sure like everyone else in the country that I will never forget the moment I first witnessed the events of Sept. 11. At that time I was arising every morning early to walk on a treadmill we have in the office in the basement of our home. I had a little TV on and was watching the Today show when suddenly it cut away for a special story. There on the TV screen were the world trade center towers...one of them was on fire. The announcer was saying that apparently a small airplane had accidently flown into it. No one seemed exactly sure what had happened. It looked like helicopters were flying around it to get a better look when suddenly as the announcer continued to wonder what the problem was another craft hit the second building. It was as if the announcer had no idea the second tower was hit. I turned off the treadmill knowing instantly that something was wrong....and thinking in the back of my mind that we were under some sort of attack. I have a brother in law who is a flight attendant and my own husband travels every week. He was out of town in Oregon. I remember saying to myself..."the second tower is hit". Suddenly the announcer realized what had happened. It was clear that even he knew something was terribly wrong. I ran upstairs to get my family up. My son watched with me on TV for several minutes. I called my husband and said "I think we are under attack" He wasn't so sure but said he would turn on the TV. We hung up. My son and daughter and I sat staring in disbelief as reports came in about the Pentagon. Many minutes later I said to my children..."those towers are not going to stand." They thought I was wrong...I went into the bathroom and my son shouted to me that the first tower was indeed falling. I ran out and stared in disbelief as it fell. Minutes later the second tower came down. Every day for two weeks I had to watch the news...I don't think I have watched the news as much as I did for many weeks after that. Until the war in Iraq... I remember worrying about every noise....every boom in my neighborhood...every airplane that flew a little too close. I believe that we need to focus on the positive aspect of the American reaction. We took care of each other we bounced back we became more united. I still think we live under the assumption that we are not vulnerable. Took what seemed like forever to get to work, and hearing what was going on in New York on the radio had me in tears. We worked at the Pantagon City Mall, just across I-395 from the Pentagon. My partner, David, mentioned something about the Pentagon being next, but I wasn't paying attention. It must have been about a half hour or so after getting there that it happened. I remember hearing a WOOSH then BOOM and the building shook. I remember telling myself that it was just a fighter jet breaking the sound barrier. I worked in the men's store of Macy's, which faced the Pentagon, and from the doors going outside, we could see just a wall of black smoke on the other side of the interstate. A few minutes later, the crowd came. People who had been in the Pentagon came looking for a phone to call whoever they needed to call. Being the floor manager, everyone looked to me as to whether or not to let them use the phones. I told my staff to let them use the phones without hesitation. Military personel flashed ID at me telling me they had priority due to national security. It was crazy. We must have had 50 or more people in the store using phones before we got the doors secured. Then the evacuation. We sat in traffic for hours. Not moving more than a few feet. People asked for rides to Springfield, and we told them they were welcomed to join us, but that we needed to get gas first. They opted for another ride. It took 6+ hours to get home, when it would take 1 without traffic jams. A friend of mine who worked at Macy's in NH lost a daughter. Her name was Amy, and she was a flight attendant on one of the planes that struck the towers. I didn't know her very well, but her mother was a sweet, kind woman. It seemd like just another ordinary day morning, and I had the TV on as I was getting ready for school. Then all of a sudden the local news went to a breking story that an airplane had crashed into one of the towers of the World Trade Center. At first the news anchors seemed to have no real sense of urgency,and gave no real details on the matter, so I figured it was just some small Cessna or commuter jet of that sort. Then about a short while after the local stations swicth to the national news, and the horrible sight of a second plane hitting the other tower unfolded before me. Then it all seemed so real, after they showed the actual footed of the plane crashing. The whole morning I stay glued to the one television the was showing news coverage at our school, as the newscasters speculated in disbeief at what had just occured. However, the most horrid point of the coverage came as the mighty towers collasped in that plume of concete and ash, that sight I will never forget. The rest of the day at school I was alert, hoping to hear of any further news, as we all tried to cope with the madness of what had unfolded. It think that we should keep in mind that fact that we can no longer living in the dream that just because we are in America does not make us invonerable. We should also remember those who lost their lives that day, as well as the families that they left behind. The innocent people who were trapped in the collapsing towers and the emergcy crews who lost their lives to save so many others should never be forgotten. I was not there witnessing this terrible tragedy, live in New York, because I live in Texas but I watched it on tv and had the worst feelings of helplessness towards this evil and injust attack of so many innocent people, I think that it is something that we can still not understand. Yes, my life changed so much after this day because I now believe more in this country, and am very proud of all those americans that chose to give their lives to help others and that only shows those who wanted to destroy us that instead of hurting us they only made us stronger, because in good and in bad together we stand, and that is something that no terrorist can take away from us. I think what should be remembered more than anything is the people that died that day, and all those heroes that gave their lives for others and how America has stood up and never put their guard down. I always had a special place for the US flag but I feel that this terrible tragedy has given me more motivation to stand up for our rights, I became a U.S. citizen after living here all my life, to show that I feel for this country even though I was not born here, this is how I realized that I really feel that I belong, because I am angry and hurt at what they did to our country.
